Changes in the Electrical Activity of the Brain in the Alpha and Theta Bands during Prayer and Meditation

Prefrontal, Frontal, and Temporal Theta EEG Asymmetries and Self-Reports of Emotional Regulation

Previous studies have shown that right-sided frontal alpha asymmetry (fAA) is an electroencephalography (EEG) marker for negatively valenced emotions and a marker for negative self-perceptions of a person's psychosocial interactions. Alpha activity is affected by the changes in visual stimulation associated with eye-opening and eye-closing; theta activity is not so affected. Therefore, this analysis investigates the relationship between an individual's theta asymmetry and self-perceptions of their psychosocial interactions. We used quantitative electroencephalographic (qEEG) data from eight right-handed male medical students aged between 19 and 38 years, recorded under eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions. Significant correlations were found between self-reported measures of psychosocial interactions via the Interactive Self-Report Inventory (ISI). The main finding was that greater left-sided frontal temporal asymmetry (fTA) under both EO and EC conditions was associated with lower "regulated" ISI scores and lower "dependent" ISI scores. Greater left-sided temporal theta asymmetry (tTA), under EC conditions, was associated with higher "anxious" ISI scores. Greater left-sided prefrontal theta symmetry (pfTA), under EO conditions, was associated with lower "relaxed" ISI scores. These findings suggest that theta asymmetries in the frontal, prefrontal, and temporal cortices may be indicative of negative emotional states. The results of this study underscore the potential of pfTA, fTA, and tTA to be used as biomarkers for cognitive-emotional balance. The implications for mental health interventions, particularly personalized therapeutic approaches, are significant.

Brain wave modulation and EEG power changes during auditory beats stimulation

Auditory beats stimulation (ABS) has received increased attention for its potential to modulate neural oscillations through a phenomenon described as brain entrainment (i.e synchronization of brain's electrocortical activity to external stimuli at a specific frequency). Recently, a new form of ABS has emerged, inspired by isochronic tones stimulation (ITd). This study investigated neural oscillatory responses induced by ITd in comparison with formerly well-established ABS protocols, such as gamma-binaural beats (BB) and white noise (WN). We recorded the electroencephalographic brain activity in 28 participants during 4 min of BB, ITd, and WN presentation. Data demonstrated that while both BB and WN enhanced oscillatory power on the EEG gamma band, consistently with the expected brain entrainment effect, ITd yielded greater changes in EEG power (p < 0.001). This was confirmed by time-based analysis, which showed a progressive increase in normalized EEG power within the ITd window compared to BB (p < 0.05). Findings also revealed that ITd elicited acute changes in the alpha band of EEG oscillations, through a progressive decrease in power over time, which was distinctly different from the pattern observed while listening BB and WN. Such dual alpha-gamma effects underline the promising and unique potential of ITd to modulate neural oscillations which selectively differ from BB and WN. This study contributes to the evolution of ABS research, highlighting the promise of ITd for cognitive enhancement and clinical applications.

Exploring the Connections between Medical Rehabilitation, Faith and Spirituality

(1) Background: Patients who undergo a medical rehabilitation treatment are often facing a physical, emotional and spiritual crisis, mostly due to pain, loss of limb functionality, the memory of the pre-disease days or questions about their role and value in life. Most of the time, the physician does not have the ability to deal with these issues or to provide the expected responses. The aim of this study was to analyze the patient's perception on spirituality and faith while going through a medical rehabilitation program. (2) Methods: The current study included 173 patients treated in the Rehabilitation Department of the Clinical Rehabilitation Hospital in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Of them, 91 comprised the study group and were assessed in 2023, while 82 comprised the control group and were assessed in 2007. All patients answered a 34-item questionnaire designed by the authors regarding the role of religion, spirituality and prayer in their post-disease life. (3) Results: The results show that 99% of the patients assessed believe in God, 80% pray every day, 50% have less pain after praying and 44% trust their priest the same as they trust their doctor. When comparing groups, results from 2023 show that more patients pray every day, while fewer are afraid of dying, think their disease is serious or wish for the medical team to pray with them, compared to 2007. (4) Conclusions: The physician should not neglect the faith of the patient and should use it to achieve a better rehabilitation outcome.

Focused-Attention Meditation Improves Flow, Communication Skills, and Safety Attitudes of Surgeons

OBJECTIVE

Patient safety is a worldwide problem and a focus of academic research. Human factors and ergonomics (HFE) is an approach to improving healthcare work systems and processes. From the perspective of the cognitive ergonomics of HFE, the aim of this study is to improve the flow level, communication skills, and safety attitudes of surgeons through focused-attention meditation (FAM) training, thus helping to reduce adverse clinical events.

METHODS

In total, 140 surgeons were recruited from three hospitals in China and randomly divided into two groups (FAM group and control group). The FAM group received 8 weeks of FAM training, while the control group was on the waiting list and did not receive any interventions. Three scales (WOLF, LCSAS, and SAQ-C) were used to measure the data of three variables (flow, communication skills, and safety attitude), respectively, at two times, before and after the intervention (pre-test and post-test). The incidence of adverse events during the intervention was also collected for both groups.

RESULTS

The ANOVA results showed that all three variables had a significant main effect of time and significant interactions between time and group. The independent-sample T-test results showed that the incidence of adverse events during the intervention was significantly lower in the FAM group than in the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

The intervention of FAM could significantly improve surgeons' flow levels, communication skills, and safety attitudes, potentially helping to reduce adverse clinical events.
