A Qualitative Evaluation of Young People's, Parents' and Carers' Experiences of a National and Specialist CAMHS Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Outpatient Service

Feasibility and acceptability of an online group dialectical behavioural therapy skills training in a Transdiagnostic group with Anxiety and Depression

Transdiagnostic approaches offers a paradigm shift in managing psychiatric disorders. Emotion regulation difficulties are a transdiagnostic prevalent across various mood and personality disorders. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST), initially designed as part of treatment for borderline personality disorder, targets emotion regulation and has shown promise in diverse psychiatric conditions. In lower middle-income countries with resource-constrained settings, online delivery of evidence-based interventions holds potential to bridge treatment gaps. This study assesses the feasibility and acceptability of online group DBT skills training for individuals with depression or anxiety disorders in India. Mental health professionals practising in India referred twenty-four eligible participants currently not engaged in psychotherapy. Of these, 18 initiated the 8-week virtual group DBT-ST program, with 12 completing it (66 % female, 18-35 years of age, 5 on concurrent medication). They provided feedback on therapy content's usefulness. Baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up assessments measured changes in emotion regulation difficulties, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Treatment retained 66.7 % of participants, all participants found the intervention beneficial. Repeated measures ANOVA indicates significant reductions in self-reported difficulties in emotion regulation, depression, and anxiety symptoms post-intervention. These findings highlight the promise of transdiagnostic interventions like DBT-ST that merit further evaluations using RCTs with larger sample sizes.

Psychometric evaluation of the Trust in Science and Scientists Scale

Reliable and valid measurement of trust in science and scientists is important. Assessing levels of such trust is important in determining attitudes and predicting behaviours in response to medical and scientific interventions targeted at managing public crises. However, trust is a complex phenomenon that has to be understood in relation to both distrust and mistrust. The Trust in Science and Scientists Scale has been adopted with increasing frequency in large-scale public health research. Detailed psychometric evaluation of the scale is overdue and makes meaningful comparisons between studies that use the scale difficult. Here, we examine the scale's dimensionality across five separate samples. We find that two factors emerge that are divided by their item polarity. Implications for scale use and trust in science measurement are discussed.

The experiences of parents in an early-intervention program for young people with borderline personality disorder features

Previous research demonstrates that parents' communication skills may contribute to the development and maintenance of their young person's borderline personality disorder (BPD). Carers of people with BPD also experience their own psychosocial stressors and feel unsupported. Consequently, Dialectical Behavior Therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) invites parents to partake in group therapy alongside their young person. Despite this involvement, little research exists examining parents' perspective of engaging in a DBT-A program, and specifically whether they experience their own benefits and changes from being part of the program. To examine this, the current study interviews 34 parents who engaged in an early intervention DBT-A program. Thematic analysis resulted in seven key themes and 16 subthemes beginning with parents' expectations of the program, followed by the key elements of the program that facilitated change, and the actual changes and benefits attributed to these elements. Overall, parents were surprised by their own gains from the program, and how the skills they learned facilitated personal development that improved family communication and functioning with their young person and more broadly. This study addresses the gap in understanding the parent perspective with clinical implications for the benefits of involving parents in therapy more generally.

A clinical follow-up study of dialectical behavior therapy skills groups among female adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorder

Our aim was to evaluate longitudinal data for adolescents who were treated with Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT) skills groups having been previously diagnosed with depressive disorder. Intervention with an observational cross-sectional design was implemented to evaluate the treatment outcome of a 10-week DBT skills groups with female adolescents with depression. After the patients were identified for enrollment, parents and adolescents were evaluated with psychometric measurements pre-, post-intervention, and at one-year follow-up. Repeated measures analysis was undertaken with the Child Depression Inventory (CDI), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) for participants. Statistical significance was detected for self-report CDI scores and both self-report and parent SDQ and PedsQL scores. This study is the first DBT intervention in Turkish children, shows that a group DBT skills groups training can be adapted and put into practice successfully with depressed Turkish adolescents.

This editorial to the Special Issue on Qualitative Inquiry in Mental Health Research with Young People provides an overview of the importance of qualitative inquiry to the field of child and youth mental health. The issue highlights research using qualitative methods to depict the lived experiences and contribution of young people in areas that reflect important mental health concerns, ranging from anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, positive resilience in young people in times of crisis, and drug and alcohol treatment.
