Abstract
Background: Canine otitis externa is a common presentation in small animal practice. The clinical signs vary individually from patient to patient. Regardless of the expression, they all decrease the quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors that showed reduced odds for otitis externa. Methods: Clinical case records were searched for key terms regarding canine otitis. Statistical analyses were applied to evaluate associations with otitis externa. p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Rhodesian Ridgeback and dogs with underlying infectious diseases had a reduced risk for otitis externa, while Retrievers and dogs with allergies had an increased risk. Furthermore, in the group of dogs with endocrinopathies, those with normal weight showed a reduced risk of developing canine otitis in comparison to those which were overweight. Conclusions: These results show a new point of view to reduce the prevalence of canine otitis by reducing the animals' weight due to an additional risk of otitis in obese or overweight dogs. Furthermore, for the first time, Rhodesian Ridgebacks were identified in our study population to have a lower risk of developing otitis externa. Thus, breeders should reflect-within other responsibilities for the quality of life in their offspring-on breed-specifics about otitis when planning ahead.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests an association between atopic dermatitis, the most chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, and autism spectrum disorders, which are a group of neurodevelopmental diseases. Inflammation and immune dysregulation associated with genetic and environmental factors seem to characterize the pathophysiological mechanisms of both conditions. We conducted a literature review of the PubMed database aimed at identifying the clinical features and alleged risk factors that could be used in clinical practice to predict the onset of ASD and/or AD or worsen their prognosis in the context of comorbidities.

Abstract
The skin microbiota, with its millions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, plays a key role in balancing the health of the skin and scalp. Its continuous exposure to potentially harmful stressors can lead to abnormalities such as local dysbiosis, altered barrier function, pathobiont overabundance, and infections often sustained by multidrug-resistant bacteria. These factors contribute to skin impairment, deregulation of immune response, and chronic inflammation, with local and systemic consequences. In this scenario, according to the needs of the bio-circular-green economy model, novel harmless strategies, both for regulating the diverse epidermal infectious and inflammatory processes and for preserving or restoring the host skin eubiosis and barrier selectivity, are requested. Vitis vinifera L. leaves and their derived extracts are rich in plant secondary metabolites, such as polyphenols, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties that can be further exploited through microbe-driven fermentation processes. On this premise, this literature review aims to provide an informative summary of the most updated evidence on their interactions with skin commensals and pathogens and on their ability to manage inflammatory conditions and restore microbial biodiversity. The emerging research showcases the potential novel beneficial ingredients for addressing various skincare concerns and advancing the cosmeceutics field as well.

Abstract
Objectives: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and relapsing dermatologic disease that can affect individuals of all ages, including children and adults. The prevalence of AD has increased dramatically over the past few decades. AD may affect children's daily activities, increase their parents' stress, and increase health expenditure. Constipation is a worldwide issue and may affect the gut microbiome. Some research has indicated that constipation might be associated with risk of atopic disease. The primary objective of this retrospective cohort study was to extend and to explore the link between maternal constipation and risk of atopic dermatitis in offspring. Methods: Using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, a subset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 138,553 mothers with constipation and 138,553 matched controls between 2005 and 2016. Propensity score analysis was used matching birth year, child's sex, birth weight, gestational weeks, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and antibiotics usage, with a ratio of 1:1. Multiple Cox regression and subgroup analyses were used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of child AD. Results: The incidence of childhood AD was 66.17 per 1,000 person-years in constipated mothers. By adjusting child's sex, birth weight, gestational weeks, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and received antibiotics, it was found that in children whose mother had constipation, there was a 1.26-fold risk of AD compared to the children of mothers without constipation (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.26; 95% CI, 1.25-1.28). According to subgroup analyses, children in the maternal constipation group had a higher likelihood of AD irrespective of child's sex, birth weight, gestational weeks, mode of delivery, and with or without comorbidities, as well as usage of antibiotics during pregnancy. Compared to the non-constipated mothers, the aHR for the constipated mothers with laxative prescriptions <12 and ≥12 times within one year before the index date were 1.26; 95% CI, 1.24 -1.28 and 1.40; 95% CI, 1.29-1.52, respectively. Conclusion: Maternal constipation was associated with an elevated risk of AD in offspring. Clinicians should be aware of the potential link to atopic dermatitis in the children of constipation in pregnant women and should treat gut patency issues during pregnancy. More study is needed to investigate the mechanisms of maternal constipation and atopic diseases in offspring.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prior research has explored the relationship between inflammatory skin disorders and breast cancer (BC), yet the causality of this association remains uncertain. METHODS Utilizing a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, this study aimed to elucidate the causal dynamics between various inflammatory skin conditions-namely acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, urticaria, and rosacea-and BC. Genetic variants implicated in these disorders were sourced from comprehensive genome-wide association studies representative of European ancestry. In the forward MR, BC was posited as the exposure, while the reverse MR treated each inflammatory skin disease as the exposure. A suite of analytical methodologies, including random effects inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median (WME), and MR-Egger, were employed to probe the causative links between inflammatory skin diseases and BC. Sensitivity analyses, alongside evaluations for heterogeneity and pleiotropy, were conducted to substantiate the findings. RESULTS The MR analysis revealed an increased risk of acne associated with BC (IVW: OR = 1.063, 95% CI = 1.011-1.117, p = 0.016), while noting a decreased risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in BC patients (IVW: OR = 0.941, 95% CI = 0.886-0.999, p = 0.047). No significant associations were observed between BC and psoriasis vulgaris, urticaria, or rosacea. Conversely, reverse MR analyses detected no effect of BC on the incidence of inflammatory skin diseases. The absence of pleiotropy and the consistency of these outcomes strengthen the study's conclusions. CONCLUSION Findings indicate an elevated incidence of acne and a reduced incidence of AD in individuals with BC within the European population.

Abstract
Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common inflammatory dermatoses in adults. Women are disproportionately impacted by AD and report significant impacts on quality of life compared to men. Objective Given the absence of formal guidelines for the treatment of AD in women of childbearing age, we will review special considerations for treating women of childbearing age with AD to ensure consistent care and optimal outcomes for these patients. Methods PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant articles from database inception through May of 2023. Results There are several treatments including topical therapies, systemic therapies, and phototherapy that are considered safe during preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Given the negative consequences of uncontrolled AD for both the mother and the unborn baby, the risks and benefits of potential therapies should be reviewed with all women of childbearing age suffering from AD. Limitations The gold standard in recommending therapies is randomized controlled trials; however, pregnant and lactating women are often excluded from these trials. Conclusion Through shared decision-making between the dermatologist, obstetrician, and patient, the risks and benefits of any therapy should be thoroughly discussed and considered with all women of childbearing age, to optimize care and outcomes for this unique population.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 20% of children globally. While studies have been conducted elsewhere, air pollution and weather variability is not well studied in the tropics. This time-series study examines the association between air pollution and meteorological factors with the incidence of outpatient visits for AD obtained from the National Skin Centre (NSC) in Singapore. The total number of 1,440,844 consultation visits from the NSC from 2009 to 2019 was analysed. Using the distributed lag non-linear model and assuming a negative binomial distribution, the short-term temporal association between outpatient visits for AD and air quality and meteorological variability on a weekly time-scale were examined, while adjusting for long-term trends, seasonality and autocorrelation. The analysis was also stratified by gender and age to assess potential effect modification. The risk of AD consultation visits was 14% lower (RR10th percentile: 0.86, 95% CI 0.78-0.96) at the 10th percentile (11.9 µg/m3) of PM2.5 and 10% higher (RR90th percentile: 1.10, 95% CI 1.01-1.19) at the 90th percentile (24.4 µg/m3) compared to the median value (16.1 µg/m3). Similar results were observed for PM10 with lower risk at the 10th percentile and higher risk at the 90th percentile (RR10th percentile: 0.86, 95% CI 0.78-0.95, RR90th percentile: 1.10, 95% CI 1.01-1.19). For rainfall for values above the median, the risk of consultation visits was higher up to 7.4 mm in the PM2.5 model (RR74th percentile: 1.07, 95% CI 1.00-1.14) and up to 9 mm in the PM10 model (RR80th percentile: 1.12, 95% CI 1.00-1.25). This study found a close association between outpatient visits for AD with ambient particulate matter concentrations and rainfall. Seasonal variations in particulate matter and rainfall may be used to alert healthcare providers on the anticipated rise in AD cases and to time preventive measures to reduce the associated health burden.

Abstract
Vesicular hand eczema (VHE), a clinical subtype of hand eczema (HE), showed limited responsiveness to alitretinoin, the only approved systemic treatment for severe chronic HE. This emphasizes the need for alternative treatment approaches. Therefore, our study aimed to identify drug repurposing opportunities for VHE using transcriptomics and genomics data. We constructed a gene network by combining 52 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from a VHE transcriptomics study with 3 quantitative trait locus (QTL) genes associated with HE. Through network analysis, clustering, and functional enrichment analyses, we investigated the underlying biological mechanisms of this network. Next, we leveraged drug-gene interactions and retrieved pharmaco-transcriptomics data from the DrugBank database to identify drug repurposing opportunities for (V)HE. We developed a drug ranking system, primarily based on efficacy, safety, and practical and pricing factors, to select the most promising drug repurposing candidates. Our results revealed that the (V)HE network comprised 78 genes that yielded several biological pathways underlying the disease. The drug-gene interaction search together with pharmaco-transcriptomics lookups revealed 123 unique drug repurposing opportunities. Based on our drug ranking system, our study identified the most promising drug repurposing opportunities (e.g., vitamin D analogues, retinoids, and immunomodulating drugs) that might be effective in treating (V)HE.

Abstract
Environmental dermatology is the study of how environmental factors affect the integumentary system. The environment includes natural and built habitats, encompassing ambient exposure, occupational exposures, and lifestyle exposures secondary to dietary and personal care choices. This review explores common toxins found in personal care products and packaging, such as bisphenols, parabens, phthalates, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, p-phenylenediamine, and formaldehyde. Exposure to these toxins has been associated with carcinogenic, obesogenic, or proinflammatory effects that can potentiate disease. In addition, these compounds have been implicated as endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can worsen dermatological conditions such as acne vulgaris, or dermatitis. Certain pollutants found in personal care products are not biodegradable and have the potential to bioaccumulate in humans. Therefore, even short-term exposure can cause long-lasting issues for communities. The skin is often the first point of contact for environmental exposures and serves as the conduit between environmental toxins and the human body. Therefore, it is important for dermatologists to understand common pollutants and their acute, subacute, and chronic impact on dermatological conditions to better diagnose and manage disease.

Abstract
AIMS Itch is an unpleasant sensation that severely impacts the patient's quality of life. Recent studies revealed that the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) may play a crucial role in the regulation of pain and itch perception. However, the contribution of the GPER in primary sensory neurons to the regulation of itch perception remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate whether and how the GPER participates in the regulation of itch perception in the trigeminal ganglion (TG). METHODS AND RESULTS Immunofluorescence staining results showed that GPER-positive (GPER+ ) neurons of the TG were activated in both acute and chronic itch. Behavioral data indicated that the chemogenetic activation of GPER+ neurons of the TG of Gper-Cre mice abrogated scratching behaviors evoked by acute and chronic itch. Conversely, the chemogenetic inhibition of GPER+ neurons resulted in increased itch responses. Furthermore, the GPER expression and function were both upregulated in the TG of the dry skin-induced chronic itch mouse model. Pharmacological inhibition of GPER (or Gper deficiency) markedly increased acute and chronic itch-related scratching behaviors in mouse. Calcium imaging assays further revealed that Gper deficiency in TG neurons led to a marked increase in the calcium responses evoked by agonists of the transient receptor potential ankyrin A1 (TRPA1) and transient receptor potential vanilloid V1 (TRPV1). CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrated that the GPER of TG neurons is involved in the regulation of acute and chronic itch perception, by modulating the function of TRPA1 and TRPV1. This study provides new insights into peripheral itch sensory signal processing mechanisms and offers new targets for future clinical antipruritic therapy.

Abstract
Objectives: Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis is a dominant bacterium in infant gut, which plays a critical role in maintaining the health and development of infants. This study investigated the abilities of eight different strains of B. longum subsp. infantis to regulate the T helper (Th)1/Th2 balance. Methods: Eight B. longum subsp. infantis strains, including I2MI (FJSWXI2MIM1), I4MI [FJSWXI4MI (CCFM1270)], I4MNI (FJSWXI4MNIM1), I5TI (FJSWXI5TIM1), I6TI (FJSWXI6TIM1), I8TI [FJSWXI8TI (CCFM1271)], I10TI [FJSWXI10TI (CCFM1272)], and B6MNI [BJSWXB6MNIM1 (CCFM1269)], were gavaged to BALB/C pups in both female (n = 8) and male (n = 8) mice starting from 1 to 3 weeks old (1 × 109 CFU/day/mice). Selected immune cells were assessed by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Cytokines and immunoglobulins were determined by ELISA. Bacterial and bifidobacterial communities were determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bifidobacterial groEL sequencing. Results: B. longum subsp. infantis I4MI and I8TI were shown to increase the ration of colonic IgG2a/IgE in male mice (P < 0.05). B6MNI was demonstrated to significantly increase the levels of colonic IFN-γ and IgG2a, as well as the ratio of IgG2a/IgE in female mice (P < 0.05). It was also shown to significantly increase the ratio of colonic IgG2a/IgE (P < 0.05) and reduce the level of colonic IL-4 in male mice (P < 0.05). Furthermore, B6MNI was demonstrated to regulate colonic JAK/STAT pathway in both male and female mice. I4MI, I5TI, and B6MNI were shown to increase the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and B. longum subsp. infantis in both male and female mice, whereas I8TI was only shown to increase the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and B. longum subsp. infantis in male mice (P < 0.05). Conclusion: These results indicated supplementation with B. longum subsp. infantis in early infancy may regulate the Th1/Th2 immune balance, which may prevent the development of related diseases.

Abstract
Although previous studies have suggested potential adverse effects of mercury on a child's immune system, the associations have been inconsistent. We aimed to determine the association between urinary mercury levels and allergic diseases in Korean children with high mercury exposure. Data from 853 and 710 children aged 6-11 years in the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) cycle 3 (2015-2017) and cycle 4 (2018-2020) were analyzed. We examined the association between mercury exposure and the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD), asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), and allergic multimorbidity. After adjusting for all covariates, the urinary mercury level was positively associated with AD in the 2015-2017 study (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.79) and AR in 2018-2020 study (OR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.01, 2.10). Pooled effects showed OR of 1.34 (95% CI = 1.01, 1.79) for AD and 1.47 (95% CI = 1.01, 2.12) for allergic multimorbidity. The association with allergic multimorbidity was greater in boys (OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.01, 3.49) than in girls (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.73, 2.14). These results suggest that environmental mercury exposure may exacerbate symptoms of atopic dermatitis and allergic multimorbidity in children.

Abstract
Hormonal and immunologic changes during pregnancy can contribute to the development of different dermatoses, the most common of which is atopic eruption of pregnancy (AEP). Of atopic dermatitis (AD) cases during pregnancy, 80% are new-onset presentations, while 20% represent recurrences or exacerbations of preexisting disease. Evidence on the effects of previous AD on fertility is limited. Different factors influence women's desire to conceive in this setting, and it has been hypothesized that barrier defects and systemic inflammation could contribute to biologic infertility, although more data are needed. Clinical practice suggests a tendency toward undertreatment in pregnant woman due to concerns about potential effects on obstetric and fetal outcomes. However, pregnant women should be offered adequate and safe treatments, preferably on an individual basis. The aim of this review was to summarize the evidence on disease course in pregnant women with AD and the challenges associated with its diagnosis and management. We also review the current evidence on the use of conventional and novel systemic therapies for AD in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pruritus gravidarum is characterized by general pruritus in the absence of primary skin lesions. In this study, we sought to evaluate whether the offspring (≤ 18 years) of mothers diagnosed with pruritus gravidarum, are at increased risk of long-term dermatology-related hospitalization. METHODS A population-based, retrospective cohort study of all singleton deliveries between 1991 and 2021 was conducted at a tertiary medical center. Offspring of mothers diagnosed with pruritus gravidarum were compared to offspring of non-exposed mothers. First admission involving dermatological morbidity of the offspring were analyzed using ICD-9 codes. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to compare the cumulative hospitalization incidence between the groups and Cox regression models were utilized to adjust for confounding variables. RESULTS A total of 849 women out of 356,356 deliveries that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were diagnosed with pruritus gravidarum during pregnancy (0.23%). Among offspring to mothers with pruritus gravidarum versus non-pruritus gravidarum mothers, hospitalization rates involving dermatological morbidity, were higher (7.1% vs. 4.6%, p < .001) a finding that was consistent with the Kaplan-Meier survival curve (Log rank p = .002). In the Cox regression model, pruritus gravidarum was found to be a significant independent risk factor for dermatological-related hospitalizations in the offspring after controlling for gestational age, hypertensive disorders, diabetic disorders, meconium-stained amniotic fluid exposure and fertility treatments (adjusted HR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.12-1.85, p = .004). CONCLUSIONS Maternal pruritus gravidarum is an independent risk factor for long-term dermatology-related hospitalization in the offspring up to the age of 18 years.

Abstract
Endogenous sex hormones and DNA methylation both play important roles in various diseases. However, their interplay is largely unknown. A deeper understanding of their interrelationships could provide new insights into the pathology of disease development. We, therefore, investigated associations between circulating sex hormones, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and DNA methylation in blood, using samples from 77 men (65 with repeated samples), from the population-based Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study (NSHDS). DNA methylation was measured in buffy coat using the Infinium Methylation EPIC BeadChip (Illumina). Sex hormone (oestradiol, oestrone, testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, and progesterone) and SHBG concentrations were measured in plasma using a high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) method and an enzyme-linked immunoassay, respectively. Associations between sex hormones, SHBG, and DNA methylation were estimated using both linear regression and mixed-effects models. Additionally, we used the comb-p method to identify differentially methylated regions based on nearby P values. We identified one novel CpG site (cg14319657), at which DNA methylation was associated with dehydroepiandrosterone, surpassing a genome-wide significance level. In addition, more than 40 differentially methylated regions were associated with levels of sex hormones and SHBG and several of these mapped to genes involved in hormone-related diseases. Our findings support a relationship between circulating sex hormones and DNA methylation and suggest that further investigation is warranted, both for validation, further exploration and to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and potential consequences for health and disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aquagenic wrinkling of palms (AWP) is emerging as a screening test for cystic fibrosis (CF). There is lack of normative data for the same in our population. OBJECTIVES To generate normative data for AWP in children 1-15 years of age and to describe the factors associated with it. METHODS Children aged 1-15 years were enrolled after obtaining informed consent and assent of the parent and child based on age. Information regarding age, gender, anthropometry, indications for visiting hospital and drug intake were noted down. Wrinkling test was done using distilled water maintained in room temperature. Sweat chloride analysis was done using Nano duct sweat analysis system for children having AWP within 3 min. The mean/median time to wrinkle was noted and presented as centile curves after smoothing. RESULTS The mean (SD) and median (interquartile range [IQR]) aquagenic wrinkling time in children 1-15 years of age was 4.88 (1.066) and 5 (4-5.75) minutes respectively. The mean (SD) and median (IQR) time for AWP was 4.78 (1.076) and 5 (4-5) minutes respectively for boys and 4.98 (1.048) and 5 (4-6) minutes, respectively for girls. The time taken to wrinkle was observed to increase with age. Males have earlier AWP than females. There was no association between AWP and anthropometry or sweat chloride levels. CONCLUSION We have estimated the normative data for AWP in children 1-15 years of age which can be used for CF screening in children with typical clinical features from resource limited settings.

Abstract
It has been observed that plasmatic concentrations of estrogens, progesterone, or both correlate with symptoms in asthmatic women. Fluctuations in female sex steroid concentrations during menstrual periods are closely related to asthma symptoms, while menopause induces severe physiological changes that might require hormonal replacement therapy (HRT), that could influence asthma symptoms in these women. Late-onset asthma (LOA) has been categorized as a specific asthmatic phenotype that includes menopausal women and novel research regarding therapeutic alternatives that might provide relief to asthmatic women suffering LOA warrants more thorough and comprehensive analysis. Therefore, the present review proposes phytoestrogens as a promising HRT that might provide these females with relief for both their menopause and asthma symptoms. Besides their well-recognized anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacities, phytoestrogens activate estrogen receptors and promote mild hormone-like responses that benefit postmenopausal women, particularly asthmatics, constituting therefore a very attractive potential therapy largely due to their low toxicity and scarce side effects.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disorder induced by dysfunction of immune suppression sharing similar pathogenesis to autoimmune diseases. To explore the association between autoimmune diseases and AD in children, we linked the birth data from National Birth Registry with National Health Insurance Research Database. There were 1,174,941 children obtained from 2006 to 2012 birth cohort. A total of 312,329 children diagnosed with AD before 5 years old were compared to 862,612 children without AD in the control group. Conditional logistic regression was utilized to calculate adjusted odds ratio (OR) and Bonferroni-corrected confidence interval (CI) for overall significance level of 0.05. In 2006-2012 birth cohort, the prevalence rate of AD was 26.6% (95% CI 26.5, 26.7) before 5 years of age. Having parental autoimmune disease (including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriasis) was associated with a significant higher risk of children AD development. The other associated factors were maternal obstetric complications (including gestational diabetes mellitus and cervical incompetence), parental systemic diseases (including anemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hyperthyroidism, and obstructive sleep apnea), and parental allergic disease (including asthma and AD). The subgroup analysis showed similar results between children's sexes. Moreover, maternal autoimmune disease had higher impact on the risk of developing AD in the child compared with paternal autoimmune disease. In conclusion, parental autoimmune diseases were found to be related to their children's AD before 5 years old.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in human milk are essential in immune system maturation and might play a role in the development of allergic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants. Immune system responses are modulated by sex, but data on the sex-specific associations with PUFAs are limited. We therefore explored sex-specific differences in human milk PUFAs and their association with AD up to 2 years. METHODS PUFAs were measured in human milk samples from the Ulm SPATZ Health Study at 6 weeks (n = 512) and 6 months (n = 367). Associations with AD up to 2 years were evaluated using crude and multivariable logistic regression. Interactions between infant sex and PUFAs were explored by including the product term. RESULTS No significant associations were observed with 6-week data. At 6 months, the median relative proportion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was significantly higher in milk for female than male infants (p = .001). Female infants whose milk was lower in quintile proportions of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) at 6 months had lower odds of AD compared to males [first vs. fifth quintile OR (95% confidence interval): 0.13 (0.02, 0.66), p = .02]. This interaction was not significant when correcting for multiple testing (α threshold: p = .004). No other statistically significant associations were observed. CONCLUSION Individual quintile PUFA proportions in human milk were not associated with AD, overall and in a sex-specific manner. More comprehensive and statistically powered longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether potential sex differences in human milk, if any, could be of clinical relevance for infants including the investigation of mediating factors.

Abstract
Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an important global health problem affecting children and adolescents and detailed national information of disease burden in China is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the national disease burden of AD in Chinese children and adolescent, to provide the temporal trends over the past 30 years and to predict the burden for the next 10 years. Methods The data of AD in China, including incidence, prevalence, and DALY, and population data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD study 2019), which were estimated using the DisMod-MR 2.1. We analyzed the three measures by age and sex; the age groups were <5 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years, and 15-19 years. The joinpoint regression analyses was conducted to assess the temporal trends from 1990 to 2019. The Bayesian age-period cohort (BAPC) model was used to predict measures from 2020 to 2030. Results In 2019, the highest incidence case and rate were observed in <5 years group; for prevalence and disability adjusted life year (DALY), the groups of <5 years and 5-9 years showed similar higher levels and the groups of 10-14 years and 15-19 years had similar relatively lower levels. Overall, the male-to-female ratios were >1 in <5 years group and <1 in 10-14 and 15-19 age groups. The trend analyses found an overall trend of decrease in cases of the three measures; in recent about 3 years, slight increase trends were shown in cases and rates of the three measures in <5 years group. The prediction analyses found a slight decreasing trend for cases of these measures and a slight increasing trend for rates of these measures in the <5 years group in the next 10 years; the 5-9 years group was predicted to increase slightly in rates of the three measures. Conclusion In conclusion, the groups of <5 years and 5-9 years are two important populations that need targeted measures to reduce disease burden of AD in China. Regarding sex disparity, we should pay more attention to males in <5 years group and to females in 10-19 years group.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) or atopic eczema is an increasingly manifested inflammatory skin disorder of complex etiology which is modulated by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. The exposome includes a person's lifetime exposures and their effects. We recently reviewed the extrinsic exposome's environmental risk factors that contribute to AD. The periods of pregnancy, infancy, and teenage years are recognized as crucial stages in the formation of AD, where the exposome leads to enduring impacts on the immune system. However, research is now focusing on the interactions between intrinsic pathways that are modulated by the extrinsic exposome, including genetic variation, epigenetic modifications, and signals, such as diet, stress, and microbiome interactions. As a result, immune dysregulation, barrier dysfunction, hormonal fluctuations, and skin microbiome dysbiosis are important factors contributing to AD development, and their in-depth understanding is crucial not only for AD treatment but also for similar inflammatory disorders.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder affecting women, which can lead to infertility. Infertility, obesity, hirsutism, acne, and irregular menstruation are just a few of the issues that PCOS can be linked to. PCOS has a complicated pathophysiology and a range of clinical symptoms. Chronic low-grade inflammation is one of the features of PCOS. The inflammatory environment involves immune and metabolic disturbances. Numerous organ systems across the body, in addition to the female reproductive system, have been affected by the pathogenic role of immunological dysregulation in PCOS in recent years. Insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism are associated with immune cell dysfunction and cytokine imbalance. More importantly, obesity is also involved in immune dysfunction in PCOS, leading to an inflammatory environment in women with PCOS. Hormone, obesity, and metabolic interactions contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS. Hormone imbalance may also contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases. The aim of this review is to summarize the pathophysiological role of immune dysregulation in various organ systems of PCOS patients and provide new ideas for systemic treatment of PCOS in the future.

Abstract
Background Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease with multiple and complex pathogenic mechanisms. Currently, renal biopsy is considered the gold standard for diagnosing membranous nephropathy. However, there were limitations to the renal puncture biopsy, such as the relatively high cost, longer time consuming, and the risk of invasive procedures. We investigated the profile of serum metabolites in IMN patients based on the UHPLC-QE-MS metabolomics technique for exploring the potential disease biomarkers and clinical implementation. Methods In our research, we collected serum samples from healthy control (n = 15) and IMN patients (n = 25) to perform metabolomics analysis based on the UHPLC-QE-MS technique. Result We identified 215 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) between the IMN and healthy control (HC) groups. Furthermore, these DEMs were significantly identified in histidine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, purine metabolism, and steroid hormone biosynthesis. Several key DEMs were significantly correlated with the level of clinical parameters, such as serum albumin, IgG, UTP, and cholesterol. Among them, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) was considered the reliable diagnostic biomarker in the IMN group. There was an increased abundance of actinobacteria, phylum proteobacteria, and class gammaproteobacterial in IMN patients for host-microbiome origin analysis. Conclusion Our study revealed the profiles of DEMs from the IMN and HC groups. The result demonstrated that there were disorders of amino acids, nucleotides, and steroids hormones metabolism in IMN patients. The down-regulation of DHEAS may be associated with the imbalance of the immune environment in IMN patients. In host-microbiome origin analysis, the gut microbiota and metabolite disturbances were present in IMN patients.

Abstract
For decades research has centered on identifying the ideal balanced skin microbiome that prevents disease and on developing therapeutics to foster this balance. However, this single idealized balance may not exist. The skin microbiome changes across the lifespan. This is reflected in the dynamic shifts of the skin microbiome's diverse, inter-connected community of microorganisms with age. While there are core skin microbial taxa, the precise community composition for any individual person is determined by local skin physiology, genetics, microbe-host interactions, and microbe-microbe interactions. As a key interface with the environment, the skin surface and its appendages are also constantly exchanging microbes with close personal contacts and the environment. Hormone fluctuations and immune system maturation also drive age-dependent changes in skin physiology that support different microbial community structures over time. Here, we review recent insights into the factors that shape the skin microbiome throughout life. Collectively, the works summarized within this review highlight how, depending on where we are in lifespan, our skin supports robust microbial communities, while still maintaining microbial features unique to us. This review will also highlight how disruptions to this dynamic microbial balance can influence risk for dermatological diseases as well as impact lifelong health.

Abstract
P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is a common component of hair dye, which can cause skin contact allergy and asthma with impaired pulmonary function. However, the adverse effects of occupational exposure to different dose PPD was rarely mentioned. We recruited 124 workers from a hair dye factory to explore the association of occupational PPD exposure on pulmonary function, pruritus and health related quality of life (HRQL). We categorized exposure to PPD into 3 levels: lower exposure group (< 0.00001 mg/m3); middle exposure group (0.00001-0.00033 mg/m3); higher exposure group (0.00033-0.047 mg/m3). The HRQL and subjective pruritus of the workers were assessed by the short form 36 health survey (SF-36) and Visual analogue scale (VAS) of pruritus, respectively. In the high PPD-exposed group, the percentage of FEV1 (FEV1%) was lower in higher exposure group compared with lower exposure group. The FEV1/FVC was also lower in comparison to the higher exposure and middle exposure groups (p < 0.05). PPD levels were negatively correlated with vitality and mental health (p < 0.01). The structural equation model showed the positive effects of PPD on VAS level (β = 0.213, p < 0.001), and indicated partly negtive effects of PPD on total score of SF-36 (β = - 0.465, p = 0.002), respectively. Our results indicate that occupational exposure to PPD might be associated with pulmonary function impairment, poor HRQL, and subjective pruritus of the workers.

Abstract
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit resulting from androgen-induced increased sebum production, altered keratinization, inflammation, and bacterial colonization of the hair follicles of the face, neck, chest and back by Propionibacterium acnes. Overall, inflammation and immune responses are strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of acne. Although early colonization with Propionibacterium acnes and family history may play an important role in the disease, it remains unclear exactly what triggers acne and how treatment affects disease progression. The influence of diet on acne disease is a growing research topic, yet few studies have examined the effects of diet on the development and clinical severity of acne disease, and the results have often been contradictory. Interestingly, very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) has been associated with both significant reductions in body weight and inflammatory status through the production of ketone bodies and thus it has been expected to reduce the exacerbation of clinical manifestations or even block the trigger of acne disease. Given the paucity of studies regarding the implementation of VLCKD in the management of acne, this review aims to provide evidence from the available scientific literature to support the speculative use of VLCKD in the treatment of acne.

Abstract
The safe management of allergic skin disorders during pregnancy is essential to maternal and fetal health. Poorly controlled allergic skin disease affects the health of mother and child. This article reviews the disease course and treatment of atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, and allergic contact dermatitis in pregnancy. It focuses on topical and systemic therapies in the context of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Because disease activity may vary in pregnancy, prescription stewardship is imperative; a balance among disease control, minimum effective dosing, and medication safety profiles should be maintained. Secondary complications and risks to maternal or infant health should also be avoided.

Abstract
Sex hormones influence the development and natural course of psoriasis. Here, we examined the effects of female sex hormones, particularly oestrogen, on psoriasis-like dermatitis induced using topical imiquimod in mice that underwent either sham operation (Sham) or ovariectomy (OVX), with (hormone replacement treatment: HRT) or without 17β-oestradiol targeting the maximum physiological levels. The number of neutrophils in the skin was higher in the order of OVX-, Sham-, and HRT-treated mice. However, no significant difference was detected in the clinical scores among the three groups due to severe erythema and scale in a few mice out of HRT-treated mice in a set of experiments. OVX- and HRT-treated mice showed increased mRNA levels of interleukin (IL)-22 and IL-23 compared with Sham-treated mice; increased IL-10 mRNA levels were found in HRT-treated mice, possibly due to an increased proportion of forkhead box P3 (Foxp3)- and IL-10 positive large cells (possibly macrophages). In addition, HRT-treated mice had a more compact stratum corneum with higher expression of loricrin and involucrin than OVX- and Sham-treated mice. This study suggests that oestrogen has a dual potential in the pathogenesis of psoriasis: suppression of inflammation by enhancing IL-10 production and enhancement of inflammation by induction of IL-22 and IL-23 expression.

Abstract
Background Despite increasing public concerns about the widespread health effects of climate change, the impacts of ambient temperature on atopic dermatitis (AD) remain poorly understood. Objectives We aimed to explore the effect of ambient temperature on AD and to estimate the burdens of AD attributed to extreme temperature. Methods Data on outpatients with AD and climate conditions in Chengdu, China were collected. A distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was adopted to explore the association between daily mean temperature and AD outpatient visits. Subgroup analysis was used to identify vulnerable populations. Attributable burden was estimated by the epidemiological attributable method. Results We analyzed 10,747 outpatient visits from AD patients at West China Hospital in Chengdu between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2020. Both low (<19.6 °C) and high temperatures (>25.3 °C) were associated with increased AD outpatient visits, with the increase being more pronounced at low temperature, as evidenced by a 160% increase in visits when the temperature dropped below zero from the minimum mortality temperature (22.8 °C). Children and males were the most susceptible populations. Approximately 25.4% of AD outpatient visits were associated with temperatures, causing an excessive 137161.5 US dollars of health care expenditures during this 6-year period. Conclusions Both high and low temperatures, particularly low temperatures, were significantly associated with an increased risk of AD, with children and males showing the strongest associations. Extreme environmental temperature has been identified as one of the major factors promoting the development of AD. However, individual patient-level exposures still needed to be investigated in future studies to confirm the causality between temperature and AD.

Abstract
Background Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a common inflammatory skin disease that is more prevalent in children and adolescents than adults. In Kuwait, there is a lack of empirical knowledge on eczema epidemiology among adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of eczema symptoms and severity, assess the frequency of eczema-related nocturnal sleep disturbance and its relation to antihistamine use, and determine factors that are associated with eczema prevalence and eczema-related nocturnal sleep disturbance. Methods A school-based cross-sectional study enrolled adolescents (n = 3864) aged 11-14 years across Kuwait. Information on eczema symptoms and clinical history, use of antihistamines, parental history of eczema, mode of delivery, and childhood life-style factors and exposures were reported by parents. Current eczema was defined as chronic or chronically relapsing itchy dermatitis with characteristic morphology and distribution in the past 12 months. Among subjects reporting current itchy rash, frequency of nocturnal sleep disturbance due to itchy rash in the past 12 months was reported as: never, <1 night per week, and ≥1 nights per week. Associations were assessed by applying a modified Poisson regression to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results The prevalence estimate of current (past 12 months) itchy rash was 20.5% (735/3593) and current eczema was 10.2% (388/3791), with 19.5% (736/3775) reporting history of ever doctor-diagnosed eczema. Among subjects with current itchy rash, nocturnal sleep disturbance due to itchy rash affected 21.7% (157/724) of participants for <1 night per week and affected 12.7% (92/724) of participants for ≥1 nights per week. Antihistamine use at least once per month increased as the frequency of nocturnal sleep disturbance due to itchy rash increased (Ptrend <0.001). Factors that demonstrated association with current eczema prevalence included underweight body mass index (aPR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.16-2.53), Cesarean section delivery (1.29, 1.01-1.65), and maternal (1.72, 1.35-2.19) and paternal (1.83, 1.44-2.32) history of eczema. Frequent (≥1 nights per week) nocturnal sleep disturbance was associated with Cesarean section delivery (1.98, 1.37-2.85), exposure to household tobacco smoke (1.70, 1.18-2.47), and dog-keeping (1.93, 1.06-3.52). Conclusions Eczema symptoms are common among adolescents in Kuwait, with similar epidemiological patterns as those observed in western countries. A large proportion of affected adolescents reported nocturnal sleep disturbance due to itchy rash. Modifiable risk factors were associated increased prevalence of eczema and night awakenings.

The first section reviews the effects of sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The second concerns insulin production in the context of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The third concludes with a discussion of thyroid and adrenal pathology in relationship to asthma, rhinitis, and eczema.

Abstract
Background: It has been suggested that cortisol levels are abnormal in chronic urticaria and atopic dermatitis, but other steroids, such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and testosterone, are still unknown, and whether these hormones affect the maintenance of skin homeostasis or the pathogenesis of skin diseases is not fully understood. Limited data are available on steroid levels in prurigo nodularis (PN)-related research, and no study has examined the association between pruritus severity and steroid levels in PN patients. Aims: This pilot study aimed to investigate the differences in the levels of five steroids combined with their ratios in plasma between PN patients and controls and to examine the associations between the biomarkers and pruritus severity. Methods: Plasma concentrations of five steroids, including cortisol, cortisone, testosterone, progesterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), in 36 patients with PN were compared with concentrations in thirty-six and matched healthy controls. The concentrations of steroids were quantitated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The PN symptoms, including pruritus severity, pain, and life quality, were assessed with the use of the visual analog scale, prurigo score index, numerical rating scale, and verbal rating scale and dermatology life quality index scores. Results: In comparison with controls, PN patients had lower levels of plasma cortisol and cortisone, which negatively correlated with PN symptoms. PN patients had higher levels of cortisone and testosterone to cortisol, which positively correlated with pruritus severity. Additionally, there were no significant differences in plasma concentrations of DHEA and testosterone between the two groups. We found no correlation between plasma concentrations of DHEA and testosterone and pruritus severity. Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that there may be abnormalities in peripheral blood levels of cortisol, and cortisone and the ratios of cortisone and testosterone to cortisol in patients with PN, and they are related to pruritus severity. The plasma concentrations of testosterone and DHEA may be not abnormal in PN patients and may not be associated with pruritus severity.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic pruritic skin disease with a complex pathogenesis underlying its heterogeneous clinical phenotypes and endotypes. The skin manifestation of AD reflects the cytokine milieu of a type-2-dominant immunity axis induced by genetic predisposition, innate immunity dysregulation, epidermal barrier defects, and allergic inflammation. However, the detailed pathomechanism of eczematous dermatitis, which is the principal characteristic of AD, remains unclear. This review examines previous studies demonstrating research progress in this area and considers the immunological pathomechanism of “spongiotic dermatitis”, which is the histopathological hallmark of eczematous dermatitis. Studies in this field have revealed the importance of IgE-mediated delayed-type hypersensitivity, the Fas/Fas-ligand system, and cell-mediated cytotoxicity in inducing the apoptosis of keratinocytes in spongiotic dermatitis. Recent studies have demonstrated that, together with infiltrating CD4 T cells, IgE-expressing dendritic cells (i.e., inflammatory dendritic epidermal cells and Langerhans cells) that capture specific allergens (i.e., house dust mites) are present in the spongiotic epidermis of lichenified eczema in patients with IgE-allergic AD. These findings suggest that IgE-mediated delayed-type hypersensitivity plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of spongiotic dermatitis in the skin lesions of AD.

Abstract
BackgroundDermatitis is an important global health problem that not only affects social interaction and physical and mental health but also causes economic burden. Health problems or distress caused by dermatitis may be easily overlooked, and relevant epidemiological data are limited. Therefore, a better understanding of the burden of dermatitis is necessary for developing global intervention strategies.MethodsAll data on dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis (AD), contact dermatitis (CD) and seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD), were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD2019) database. The extracted age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) rates (ASDR) data were analysed by stratification, including by sex, country or region, and sociodemographic index (SDI) indicators. Finally, we analysed the correlation between the global burden of dermatitis and socioeconomic development status.ResultsAccording to the GBD 2019 estimate, the ASIR and ASDR for the three major types of dermatitis in 2019 were 5244.3988 (95% CI 4551.7244–5979.3176) per 100,000 person-years and 131.6711 (95% CI 77.5876–206.8796) per 100,000 person-years. The ASIR and ASDR of atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis are: Incidence (95%CI,per 100,000 person-years), 327.91 (312.76-343.67), 3066.04 (2405.38-3755.38), 1850.44 (1706.25- 1993.74); DALYs (95%CI, per 100,000 person-years), 99.69 (53.09-167.43), 28.06 (17.62-41.78), 3.93 (2.24-6.25). In addition, among the three dermatitis types, the greatest burden was associated with AD. According to the ASDR from 1990 to 2019, the burden of dermatitis has exhibited a slow downward trend in recent years. In 2019, the ASIR showed that the USA had the greatest burden, while the ASDR showed that Asian countries (such as Japan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan) and some European countries (France, Estonia) had the greatest burden. According to SDI stratification and the three major dermatitis types, high ASIR and ASDR corresponded to high SDI areas (especially for AD).ConclusionThe burden of dermatitis is related to socioeconomic development status, especially for AD, which is positively correlated with the SDI. The results based on GBD2019 data are valuable for formulating policy, preventing and treating dermatitis and reducing the global burden of dermatitis.

Abstract
Purpose
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues reduce testosterone levels to castration levels in patients with prostate cancer. However, the role of testosterone in atopic diseases has remained undefined. We aimed to investigate this role.
Materials and methods
This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Patients with prostate cancer were categorized into two groups according to whether they received GnRH analogue treatment (study group I) or not (study group II), and men without prostate cancer and with no GnRH analogue use were defined to comprise the comparison group after their ages and index years were matched with group II. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the hazard ratio (HR) of atopic diseases.
Results
Group I, group II, and the comparison group comprised 663, 2,172, and 8,688 individuals, respectively. Group I had a significantly lower risk of atopic diseases (adjusted HR: 0.66, 95% CI, 0.49–0.89, p < 0.01) than did group II. A reduced risk of atopic diseases was found when GnRH analogues were prescribed for 2 months (adjusted HR 0.53, 95% CI, 0.29–0.97, p = 0.04) and 2–14 months (adjusted HR 0.66, 95% CI, 0.49–0.89, p = 0.007). No significant difference in the risk of atopic diseases between group II and the comparison group was observed.
Conclusions
A decreased risk of atopic diseases was observed in patients with prostate cancer treated with GnRH analogues. Further studies are warranted to verify the association between testosterone levels and atopic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dupilumab, an antibody against interleukin-4 receptor α, has demonstrated elegant efficacy and safety profiles in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the efficacy of dupilumab varies among AD patients, and compared with the Caucasian population, the data of dupilumab for Asian people, especially Chinese AD patients, is very limited. OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and safety of dupilumab for AD in a real-world Chinese single-centre prospective cohort. METHODS We enrolled 138 moderate-to-severe AD patients receiving dupilumab treatment at Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China in this 16-week, single-centre, prospective, open-label study. The patients were evaluated at baseline, 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks after first dupilumab administration for multiple physician- and patient-reported outcome measures. Blood eosinophil counts and total serum IgE were measured. RESULTS There were early and sustained improvement in all the efficacy measures evaluated after dupilumab administration. 64.5% AD patients achieved an improvement of ≥75% in the Eczema Area and Severity Index from baseline, and 60.9% patients achieved the Investigator's Global Assessment 0/1(or a reduction of ≥ 2 points from baseline) at week 16. The trunk demonstrated the most significantly decreased efficacy score (median decreased 96.24% [interquartile range, 89.04 to 100.00%]) compared with other body sites. Female [adjusted OR:2.12, 95% CI: 0.79 - 5.74] and BMI < 24 [3.03; 1.19 - 7.68] were identified as potential predictive factors of good response; while age > 60 [0.57; 0.10 - 3.28] predicted poor response. Adverse events were reported by 34.1% patients, and facial erythema (13.0%) and ocular symptoms (10.9%) were the most common. CONCLUSIONS Dupilumab demonstrated favorable efficacy and well-tolerated safety in Chinese AD patients in real-world practice.

Abstract
The skin exerts several fundamental functions that are the first physical, chemical and immune barriers to the human body. Keratinocytes, the main cell type of the epidermis, provide mechanical defense, support skin integrity and actively endorse cutaneous immune responses. Not surprisingly, considering these crucial activities, alterations in keratinocyte functions are associated with different inflammatory skin diseases. Recent findings indicate that the skin should not only be regarded as a target for hormones but that it should also be considered as an endocrine peripheral organ that is directly involved in the synthesis and metabolism of these chemical messengers. Sex hormones have multiple effects on the skin, attributed to the binding with intracellular receptors expressed by different skin cell populations, including keratinocytes, that activate downstream signaling routes that modulate specific cellular functions and activities. This review is aimed at reorganizing the current knowledge on the role exerted by sex hormones on keratinocyte function in five different inflammatory skin diseases: Hidradenitis suppurativa; Acne vulgaris; Atopic dermatitis; progesterone hypersensitivity; psoriasis. The results of our work aim to provide a deeper insight into common cellular mechanisms and molecular effectors that might constitute putative targets to address for the development of specific therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that can be associated with psychiatric disorders. Picrasma quassioides (D.Don) Benn (Gomokpi, GMP), a traditional medicinal herb, has been used to treat skin diseases, including AD. The current study examined the effects of an ethanolic extract of GMP on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD mice. The severity of skin symptoms and behavioral changes in AD mice were evaluated. GMP alleviated the AD-like skin inflammation and hyperlocomotion activity in DNCB-treated BALB/c mice. The effects of GMP behavioral abnormalities might occur by inhibiting TNF-α production in the PFC. GMP suppressed the production of TARC (Th2 chemokine) in TI-stimulated HaCaT keratinocytes. Moreover, GMP also exerted immunosuppressive effects by reducing TNF-α production in LPS-stimulated Raw264.7 macrophages, IL-17 expression in PI-stimulated EL4 cells, and VEGF secretion in SP-stimulated HMC-1 cells. These findings suggest that GMP could be useful for treating AD by modulating inflammatory responses and comorbid behavioral changes.

Abstract
Aims There have been no worldwide standardised surveys of prevalence and severity of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in school children for 15 years. The present study aims to provide this information. Methods Following the exact International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) methodology (cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey), Global Asthma Network (GAN) Phase I was carried out between 2015 and 2020 in many centres worldwide. Results The study included 157 784 adolescents (13–14 years of age) in 63 centres in 25 countries and 101 777 children (6–7 years of age) in 44 centres in 16 countries. The current prevalence of symptoms, respectively, was 11.0% and 9.1% for asthma, 13.3% and 7.7% for rhinoconjunctivitis and 6.4% and 5.9% for eczema. The prevalence of asthma ever was 10.5% and 7.6%, hay fever ever was 15.2% and 11.1% and eczema ever was 10.6% and 13.4%, respectively. Centres in low or lower middle gross national income countries (LICs or LMICs) had significantly lower prevalence of the three disease symptoms and diagnoses (except for hay fever). In children, the prevalence of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms was higher in boys, while the reverse occurred among adolescents. For eczema, while the prevalence among female adolescents was double that of males, there was no sex difference among children. Centre accounted for non-negligible variability in all disease symptoms (10–20%). Conclusion The burdens of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema vary widely among the limited number of countries studied. Although symptom prevalence is lower in LICs and LMICs, it represents a considerable burden everywhere studied. There is a substantial global burden of asthma, hay fever and eczema in adolescents and children, representing a major global public health problem. Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited knowledge regarding prevalence and characteristics of Atopic Dermatitis (AD) among young adults in the general population. OBJECTIVES To study AD among young adults in a Swedish population-based birth cohort, with a particular focus on prevalence, sex differences including risk for AD at different ages, disease course and characteristics of AD at 24 years. METHODS The BAMSE cohort includes 4,089 individuals who have been followed regularly from birth to age 24 years regarding AD and atopic diseases. For this study 3,055 individuals who answered questions regarding AD at the 24-year follow-up were included. All were invited to a clinical examination including skin examination, evaluation by Williams criteria and collection of blood for analysis of specific IgE and 2,264 individuals chose to participate. RESULTS At 24 years the 12-month prevalence of AD was 17.8% and more females than males had AD (20.5% versus 14.8%), p<0.0001. The point-prevalence of ongoing AD at clinical examination was 8.0%. AD severity as assessed by Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM) did not differ between sexes. The proportion of adult onset of AD was 16.9% (92 of 543), females 17.3% versus males 16.4%. More females than males with AD at 24 years reported disturbed sleep due to itch (26.1% versus 15.5%, p<0.003). IgE-sensitization was less common among females with AD than males with AD (61.3% versus 79.6%, p<0.0001). In addition, male sex (female sex being the reference) was associated with increased odds for AD the first year of life (OR 1.31, 95% CI; 1.10-1.56), and decreased odds of AD in adolescence and young adulthood (OR 0.66, 95% CI; 0.55-0.80). CONCLUSIONS AD is a common disease among young adults and even though more females than males have AD at 24 years, adult onset of AD seems to be equally prevalent among both sexes in young adulthood.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease with a significant global disease burden. Several mechanisms underlie AD, such as epidermal barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation, which have led to innovative systemic treatment options. Other inflammatory disorders, as well as innate and adaptive immune responses, have noted sex differences, but our article highlights a paucity of data on the impact of sex, gender, and gender identity on the pathophysiology and systemic treatments of AD.

Abstract
Many studies have explored the association between temperature and atopic dermatitis (AD); however, the results are inconsistent. We used a quasi-Poisson function fitted to a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to evaluate the association between daily average temperature and AD outpatient visits from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2019, in Lanzhou, China. We found that the exposure-response association curve was inversely "s-shaped," low-temperature effects occurred at a lag of 11 days and then lasted for 10 days, and high-temperature effects occurred on the current day and then significantly decreased. Both low and high ambient temperatures can increase the risk of outpatient visits. Compared with median temperature (12.89°C), the cumulative relative risk (RR) of extreme high temperature and moderate-high temperature were 1.847 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.613, 2.114) and 1.447 (95% CI: 1.298, 1.614), respectively, at lag0-7 days, and the cumulative RRs of extremely low temperature and moderate-low temperature were 1.004 (95% CI: 0.904, 1.115) and 1.056 (95% CI: 0.925, 1.205), respectively, at lag0-21 days. Females were more sensitive to high temperatures than males, and high or low temperatures had significant effects on children ≤14 years of age. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease with growing prevalence and has become a global public health problem. However, little is known about the burden caused by AD in China. Objective To access the prevalence and burden of AD in China. Methods We estimated the prevalence and year lived with disability (YLD) of AD in China, by different age and sex groups. We also compared the burden of AD in China with other countries in the Group of Twenty (G20). We analyzed the changes in the number of AD patients and their YLDs by cause decomposition from 1990 to 2019. Results AD was the twenty-fourth leading cause of the burden of 369 diseases in China in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized prevalence and YLD rate of AD in China increased by 1.04% and 1.43% respectively, which were the second and the largest increase among the G20 and both higher than the global average (-4.29% and -4.14%). The number of patients with AD increased by 25.65%, of which 20.16% was due to population growth, 3.85% due to population aging, and 1.64% due to age-specific prevalence. Both the prevalence and YLD rate of AD were higher in 1 to 4 year-olds and 95+ years age group. Before the age of 10, the prevalence and YLD rate of AD in males were higher than those in females, while there was a marked sex shift at the ages of 10 to 14. Conclusion AD is a serious public health problem in China. Substantial variations exist in burden due to AD between male and female, and in age groups. Considering these findings will be important for developing preventive strategies and treatments to reduce the burden of AD.

Abstract
Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common health problem found in children. Understanding of the determinants of AD-related factors includes gender, family history, childbirth history, and exclusive breastfeeding. Objective Analyzing gender, family history, childbirth history, and exclusive breastfeeding on recurrence of AD symptoms in children. Methods This study employed a cross-sectional design with a purposive sampling method. The procedure for collecting data in this study included data on participant recurrence, gender, family history of atopy disease, childbirth history, and exclusive breastfeeding. The analysis used Chi-square and eta correlation test with p < 0.05. Results The results showed that 56.0% of male participants experienced recurrent atopic dermatitis symptoms and 56.7% of female participants did not experience recurrence (OR = 1.664; p = 0.349). It was reported that 61.3% of participants did not experience recurrent atopic symptoms with a family history of 1 atopic person and 71.4% of participants experienced recurrence with 2 atopic families (F = 2114; p = 0.349). Most participants who were delivered through cesarean delivery did not experience recurrent atopic dermatitis symptoms as much as 56.0%, while participants who had a history of spontaneous delivery mostly experienced recurrent atopic dermatitis symptoms as much as 52.9% (OR = 1.500; p = 0.467). There was a significant association between participants who received exclusive breastfeeding and recurrent atopic dermatitis symptoms (OR = 4.444; p = 0.032). Conclusion Recurrent of AD is influenced by exclusive breastfeeding and not influenced by gender, family history of atopy disease, and history of childbirth. No significant association of gender, family history, and childbirth on recurrence of atopic dermatitis symptoms. There is a significant association between exclusive breastfeeding and recurrent atopic dermatitis. Participants who experience atopic dermatitis as much as 57.1% consume exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract
Objectives Deciphering the genetic relationships between major depressive disorder (MDD) and atopic diseases (asthma, hay fever, and eczema) may facilitate understanding of their biological mechanisms as well as the development of novel treatment regimens. Here we tested the genetic correlation between MDD and atopic diseases by linkage disequilibrium score regression. Methods A polygenic overlap analysis was performed to estimate shared genetic variations between the two diseases. Causal relationships between MDD and atopic diseases were investigated using two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis. Genomic loci shared between MDD and atopic diseases were identified using cross-trait meta-analysis. Putative functional genes were evaluated by fine-mapping of transcriptome-wide associations. Results The polygenic analysis revealed approximately 15.8 thousand variants causally influencing MDD and 0.9 thousand variants influencing atopic diseases. Among these variants, approximately 0.8 thousand were shared between the two diseases. Mendelian randomization analysis indicates that genetic liability to MDD has a causal effect on atopic diseases (b = 0.22, p = 1.76 × 10-6), while genetic liability to atopic diseases confers a weak causal effect on MDD (b = 0.05, p = 7.57 × 10-3). Cross-trait meta-analyses of MDD and atopic diseases identified 18 shared genomic loci. Both fine-mapping of transcriptome-wide associations and analysis of existing literature suggest the estrogen receptor β-encoding gene ESR2 as one of the potential risk factors for both MDD and atopic diseases. Conclusion Our findings reveal shared genetic liability and causal links between MDD and atopic diseases, which shed light on the phenotypic relationship between MDD and atopic diseases.
