An Overview on the Formation and Processing of Nitrogen-Vacancy Photonic Centers in Diamond by Ion Implantation

Photonic-Cavity-Enhanced Laser Writing of Color Centers in Diamond

Color centers in diamond have widespread utility in quantum technologies, but their creation process remains stochastic in nature. Deterministic creation of color centers in device-ready diamond platforms can improve the yield, scalability, and integration. Recent work using pulsed laser excitation has shown impressive progress in deterministically creating defects in bulk diamond. Here, we extend this laser-writing process into nanophotonic devices etched into diamond membranes, including nanopillars and photonic resonators with writing and subsequent readout occurring in situ at cryogenic temperatures. We demonstrate the optically driven creation of carbon vacancy (GR1) and nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond nanopillars and observe enhanced photoluminescence collection from them. We also fabricate bullseye resonators and leverage their cavity modes to locally amplify the laser-writing field, yielding defect creation with picojoule write-pulse energies 100 times lower than those typically used in bulk diamond demonstrations.

Diamond for High-Power, High-Frequency, and Terahertz Plasma Wave Electronics

High thermal conductivity and a high breakdown field make diamond a promising candidate for high-power and high-temperature semiconductor devices. Diamond also has a higher radiation hardness than silicon. Recent studies show that diamond has exceptionally large electron and hole momentum relaxation times, facilitating compact THz and sub-THz plasmonic sources and detectors working at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The plasmonic resonance quality factor in diamond TeraFETs could be larger than unity for the 240-600 GHz atmospheric window, which could make them viable for 6G communications applications. This paper reviews the potential and challenges of diamond technology, showing that diamond might augment silicon for high-power and high-frequency compact devices with special advantages for extreme environments and high-frequency applications.

A Review of the Current State of Magnetic Force Microscopy to Unravel the Magnetic Properties of Nanomaterials Applied in Biological Systems and Future Directions for Quantum Technologies

Magnetism plays a pivotal role in many biological systems. However, the intensity of the magnetic forces exerted between magnetic bodies is usually low, which demands the development of ultra-sensitivity tools for proper sensing. In this framework, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) offers excellent lateral resolution and the possibility of conducting single-molecule studies like other single-probe microscopy (SPM) techniques. This comprehensive review attempts to describe the paramount importance of magnetic forces for biological applications by highlighting MFM's main advantages but also intrinsic limitations. While the working principles are described in depth, the article also focuses on novel micro- and nanofabrication procedures for MFM tips, which enhance the magnetic response signal of tested biomaterials compared to commercial nanoprobes. This work also depicts some relevant examples where MFM can quantitatively assess the magnetic performance of nanomaterials involved in biological systems, including magnetotactic bacteria, cryptochrome flavoproteins, and magnetic nanoparticles that can interact with animal tissues. Additionally, the most promising perspectives in this field are highlighted to make the reader aware of upcoming challenges when aiming toward quantum technologies.

Color Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as an essential material for the encapsulation layer in van der Waals heterostructures and efficient deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. This is primarily due to its remarkable physical properties and ultrawide bandgap (close to 6 eV, and even larger in some cases) properties. Color centers in hBN refer to intrinsic vacancies and extrinsic impurities within the 2D crystal lattice, which result in distinct optical properties in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) range. Furthermore, each color center in hBN exhibits a unique emission spectrum and possesses various spin properties. These characteristics open up possibilities for the development of next-generation optoelectronics and quantum information applications, including room-temperature single-photon sources and quantum sensors. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the atomic configuration, optical and quantum properties, and different techniques employed for the formation of color centers in hBN. A deep understanding of color centers in hBN allows for advances in the development of next-generation UV optoelectronic applications, solid-state quantum technologies, and nanophotonics by harnessing the exceptional capabilities offered by hBN color centers.

Nanodiamonds Doped with Manganese for Applications in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Nanodiamonds (NDs) are emerging with great potential in biomedical applications like biomarking through fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), targeted drug delivery, and cancer therapy. The magnetic and optical properties of NDs could be tuned by selective doping. Therefore, we report multifunctional manganese-incorporated NDs (Mn-NDs) fabricated by Mn ion implantation. The fluorescent properties of Mn-NDs were tuned by inducing the defects by ion implantation and enhancing the residual nitrogen vacancy density achieved by a two-step annealing process. The cytotoxicity of Mn-NDs was investigated using NCTC clone 929 cells, and the results revealed no cytotoxicity effect. Mn-NDs have demonstrated dual mode contrast enhancement for both T 1- and T 2-weighted in vitro MR imaging. Furthermore, Mn-NDs have illustrated a significant increase in longitudinal relaxivity (fivefold) and transversal relaxivity (17-fold) compared to the as-received NDs. Mn-NDs are employed to investigate their ability for in vivo MR imaging by intraperitoneal (ip) injection of Mn-NDs into mice with liver tumors. After 2.5 h of ip injection, the enhancement of contrast in T 1- and T 2-weighted images has been observed via the accumulation of Mn-NDs in liver tumors of mice. Therefore, Mn-NDs have great potential for in vivo imaging by MR imaging in cancer therapy.

Formation of NV centers in diamond by a femtosecond laser single pulse

The NV centers in a diamond were successfully created by the femtosecond laser single pulse. We also investigated the effect on the diamond lattice induced by the different laser pulse widths from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. Interestingly, in spite of the high thermal conductivity of a diamond, we found that there is a suitable pulse repetition rate of several tens kHz for the formation of NV center ensembles by the femtosecond laser pulse irradiation.

Hybridized Defects in Solid-State Materials as Artificial Molecules

Two-dimensional materials can be crafted with structural precision approaching the atomic scale, enabling quantum defects-by-design. These defects are frequently described as "artificial atoms" and are emerging optically addressable spin qubits. However, interactions and coupling of such artificial atoms with each other, in the presence of the lattice, warrants further investigation. Here we present the formation of "artificial molecules" in solids, introducing a chemical degree of freedom in control of quantum optoelectronic materials. Specifically, in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride as our model system, we observe configuration- and distance-dependent dissociation curves and hybridization of defect orbitals within the bandgap into bonding and antibonding orbitals, with splitting energies ranging from ∼10 meV to nearly 1 eV. We calculate the energetics of cis and trans out-of-plane defect pairs CH_B-CH_B against an in-plane defect pair C_B-C_B and find that in-plane defect pair interacts more strongly than out-of-plane pairs. We demonstrate an application of this chemical degree of freedom by varying the distance between C_B and V_N of C_BV_N and observe changes in the predicted peak absorption wavelength from the visible to the near-infrared spectral band. We envision leveraging this chemical degree of freedom of defect complexes to precisely control and tune defect properties toward engineering robust quantum memories and quantum emitters for quantum information science.

Laser-Induced Phosphorus-Doped Conductive Layer Formation on Single-Crystal Diamond Surfaces

A laser-induced doping method was employed to incorporate phosphorus into an insulating monocrystalline diamond at ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Pulsed laser beams with nanosecond duration (20 ns) were irradiated on the diamond substrate immersed in a phosphoric acid liquid, in turns, and a thin conductive layer was formed on its surface. Phosphorus incorporation in the depth range of 40-50 nm below the irradiated surface was confirmed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Electrically, the irradiated areas exhibited ohmic contacts even with tungsten prober heads at room temperature, where the electrical resistivity of irradiated areas was greatly decreased compared to the original surface. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity implies that the surface layer is semiconducting with activation energies ranging between 0.2 eV and 54 meV depending on irradiation conditions. Since after laser treatment no carbon or graphitic phases other than diamond is found (the D and G Raman peaks are barely observed), the incorporation of phosphorus is the main origin of the enhanced conductivity. It was demonstrated that the proposed technique is applicable to diamond as a new ex situ doping method for introducing impurities into a solid in a precise and well-controlled manner, especially with electronic technology targeting of smaller devices and shallower junctions.

Orientation Dependence of Cathodoluminescence and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy of Defects in Chemical-Vapor-Deposited Diamond Microcrystal

Point defects, impurities, and defect–impurity complexes in diamond microcrystals were studied with the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy in the scanning electron microscope, photoluminescence (PL), and Raman spectroscopy (RS). Such defects can influence the directions that microcrystals are grown. Micro-diamonds were obtained by a hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HF CVD) technique from the methane–hydrogen gas mixture. The CL spectra of diamond microcrystals taken from (100) and (111) crystallographic planes were compared to the CL spectrum of a (100) oriented Element Six diamond monocrystal. The following color centers were identified: 2.52, 2.156, 2.055 eV attributed to a nitrogen–vacancy complex and a violet-emitting center (A-band) observed at 2.82 eV associated with dislocation line defects, whose atomic structure is still under discussion. The Raman studies showed that the planes (111) are more defective in comparison to (100) planes. What is reflected in the CL spectra as (111) shows a strong band in the UV region (2.815 eV) which is not observed in the case of the (100) plane.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Optimization of Magnetoelectric BaTiO3-Iron Oxide Core-Shell Nanoparticles

Improvement of magnetic, electronic, optical, and catalytic properties in cutting-edge technologies including drug delivery, energy storage, magnetic transistor, and spintronics requires novel nanomaterials. This article discusses the unique, clean, and homogeneous physiochemical synthesis of BaTiO₃/iron oxide core–shell nanoparticles with interfaces between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy displayed the distinguished disparity between the core and shell of the synthesized nanoparticles. Elemental mapping and line scan confirmed the formation of the core–shell structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy detected the surface iron oxide phase as maghemite. Rietveld analysis of the X-ray diffraction data labeled the crystallinity and phase purity. This study provides a promising platform for the desirable property development of the futuristic multifunctional nanodevices.

Significant Reduction of Defect States and Surface Tailoring in ZnO Nanoparticles via Nano-Bio Interaction With Glucose for Bio-Applications

In this study, we have investigated the structural and optical properties of nanoconjugates (NJs) consisting of phase pure zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) with glucose biomolecules. All NJs were fabricated using a standard biochemical synthesis process. Structural, optical, vibrational, and biochemical interface properties of nano-bio composites are probed by different complementary characterization techniques. The XRD patterns of the NPs and NJs illustrate a highly phase pure ZnO structure. A visible green emission in the photoluminescence spectrum, mainly associated with the oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZnO nanostructure, is significantly reduced by the incorporation of glucose biomolecules. The strong binding interaction of glucose biomolecule on the surface of ZnO NPs results in the reduction in green-yellow-orange emission intensities. The interaction of glucose molecules modifies oxygen vacancies by capturing free electrons from the ZnO surface region. Significant changes in the peak intensity and relative peak position of some of the glucose and ZnO NPs in Raman spectra refer to the direct binding between these two nano- and bio-components. In the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the binding energy of O 1s core level in NJs increases from 531 eV (O 1s core level position for ZnO) and the increment is more with higher initial glucose concentration in the solution during synthesis. This study serves as a promising platform for the development of new kinds of NJs and investigation of their interfacial properties which can take the frontier forward for integration and multifunctionality.

Engineering of Shallow Layers of Nitrogen Vacancy Colour Centres in Diamond Using Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation

Sensing nano-scale magnetic field sources is at the heart of many applications in nano-science and biology. Given its very small size and high magnetic sensitivity, the nitrogen vacancy (NV) colour centre in diamond is one of the leading candidates for such applications. However, issues regarding the stability and performance of the NV centre near the diamond’s surface are the major obstacle in the practical realization of theses sensors. So far, conventional implantation and growth techniques did not produce practical and/or repeatable solutions to this problem. In this report, we show first results of shallow layers of NVs created using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). We show, using Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), that most NVs are within 3.6 nm from the diamond’s surface. Despite the relatively low quality of the diamond substrates used and the simplicity of our PIII system, we have an estimated magnetic sensitivity of around 2.29 μT/\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\sqrt{Hz\cdot \mu {m}^{-2}}$$\end{document}Hz⋅μm−2.

Fluorescent Fe Embedded Magnetic Nanodiamonds Made by Ion Implantation

We demonstrate fluorescent Fe embedded magnetic nanodiamonds by ion implantation and two-step annealing. The diamond characteristics with a highly ordered core and a graphite surface layer are maintained after the implantation process. After the two-step annealing process, a bright red fluorescence associated with nitrogen-vacancy centers is observed. These new fluorescent magnetic nanodiamonds can be used as a dual-function in vivo tracer with both optical visibility and magnetic resonance imaging capabilities. They are potentially useful for the more advanced in vivo biological and medical applications.
