Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA Dental Composite Resins Enriched with Quaternary Ammonium Polyethylenimine Nanoparticles

Enhancing the Antimicrobial Properties of Experimental Resin-Based Dental Composites through the Addition of Quaternary Ammonium Salts

Secondary caries is one of the main reasons for dental filling replacement. There is a need to obtain dental restorative material that is able to act against caries-inducing microorganisms. This study explores the antimicrobial properties of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB)-modified photo-cured experimental dental composites against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans was assessed by using an Accuri C6 flow cytofluorimeter, and then analyzed using BD CSampler software (1.0.264). Bacterial/yeast surface colonization was carried out by using an GX71 inverted-optics fluorescence microscope equipped with a DP 73 digital camera. For bactericidal surface analysis of each sample type, simultaneous standardization was performed using a positive control (live cells) and a negative control (dead cells). A positive correlation between the increasing concentration of CTAB or DODAB and the dead cell ratio of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans was revealed. In particular, CTAB at a 2.0 wt% concentration exhibits superior efficiency against pathogens (65.0% dead cells of Escherichia coli, 73.9% dead cells of Streptococcus mutans, and 23.9% dead cells of Candida albicans after 60 min). However, Candida albicans is more resistant to used salts than bacteria. A CTAB- or DODAB-modified experimental dental composite exhibits antimicrobial potential against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans after 10 and 60 min of incubation, and the antimicrobial efficiency increases with the wt% of QAS in the tested material.

Antibacterial Agents for Composite Resin Restorative Materials: Current Knowledge and Future Prospects

Resin composites became the material of choice for direct restorations in anterior and posterior teeth. Despite the revolutionary improvement in the material, restoration failure is still a major drawback due to the material's inherent negative properties, including a lack of antibacterial effects. Therefore, many attempts have been made to incorporate antibacterial agents into resin composite materials to improve their antimicrobial properties and prevent secondary caries formation. Multiple laboratory studies have been conducted using different antibacterial agents, such as quaternary ammonium compounds, methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide, magnesium oxide nanoparticles, chlorhexidine, and chitosan. This review provides a glance at the current status of these materials and the research directions needed in the future.

The effect of quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles on bacterial adherence, cytotoxicity, and physical and mechanical properties of experimental dental composites

A significant problem related to the functioning of resin-based composites for dental fillings is secondary or recurrent caries, which is the reason for the need for repeated treatment. The cross-linked quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles (QA-PEI-NPs) have been shown to be a promising antibacterial agent against different bacteria, including cariogenic ones. However, little is known about the properties of dental dimethacrylate polymer-based composites enriched with QA-PEI-NPs. This research was carried out on experimental composites based on bis-GMA/UDMA/TEGDMA matrix enriched with 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 (wt%) QA-PEI-NPs and reinforced with two glass fillers. The cured composites were tested for their adherence of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria, cell viability (MTT assay) with 48 h and 10-days extracts , degree of conversion (DC), water sorption (WSO), and solubility (WSL), water contact angle (CA), flexural modulus (E), flexural strength (FS), compressive strength (CS), and Vickers microhardness (HV). The investigated materials have shown a complete reduction in bacteria adherence and satisfactory biocompatibility. The QA-PEI-NPs additive has no effect on the DC, VH, and E values. QA-PEI-NPs increased the CA (a favorable change), the WSO and WSL (unfavorable changes) and decreased flexural strength, and compressive strength (unfavorable changes). The changes mentioned were insignificant and acceptable for most composites, excluding the highest antibacterial filler content. Probably the reason for the deterioration of some properties was low compatibility between filler particles and the matrix; therefore, it is worth extending the research by surface modification of QA-PEI-NPs to achieve the optimum performance characteristics.

Glass-Ceramic Fillers Based on Zinc Oxide-Silica Systems for Dental Composite Resins: Effect on Mechanical Properties

The potential of glass ceramics as applicable materials in various fields including fillers for dental restorations is our guide to present a new procedure for improvements of the mechanical properties of dental composites. This work aims to use Zn2SiO4 and SiO2-ZnO nano-materials as fillers to improve the mechanical properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed dental resins. Zn2SiO4 and SiO2-ZnO samples were prepared and characterized by using XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and FT-IR techniques. The XRD pattern of the SiO2-ZnO sample shows that ZnO crystallized in a hexagonal phase, while the SiO2 phase was amorphous. Similarly, the Zn2SiO4 sample crystallized in a rhombohedral crystal system. The prepared samples were used as fillers for the improvement of the mechanical properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed dental resins. Five samples of dental composites composed of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed resins were filled with 2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 wt% of SiO2-ZnO, and similarly, five samples were filled with Zn2SiO4 samples (2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 wt%). All of the 10 samples (A1-A10) were characterized by using different techniques including FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, and TGA analyses. According to the TGA analysis, all samples were thermally stable up to 200 °C, and the thermal stability increased with the filler percent. Next, the mechanical properties of the samples including the flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), diameter tensile strength (DTS), and compressive strength (CS) were investigated. The obtained results revealed that the samples filled with 8 wt% of SiO2-ZnO and 10 wt% of Zn2SiO4 had higher FS values of 123.4 and 136.6 MPa, respectively. Moreover, 8 wt% of both fillers displayed higher values of the FM, DTS, and CS parameters. These values were 8.6 GPa, 34.2 MPa, and 183.8 MPa for SiO2-ZnO and 11.3 GPa, 41.2 MPa, and 190.5 MPa for the Zn2SiO4 filler. Inexpensive silica-based materials enhance polymeric mechanics. Silica-metal oxide nanocomposites improve dental composite properties effectively.

Monomer Release from Dental Resins: The Current Status on Study Setup, Detection and Quantification for In Vitro Testing

Improvements in mechanical properties and a shift of focus towards esthetic dentistry led to the application of dental resins in various areas of dentistry. However, dental resins are not inert in the oral environment and may release monomers and other substances such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) due to incomplete polymerization and intraoral degradation. Current research shows that various monomers present cytotoxic, genotoxic, proinflammatory, and even mutagenic effects. Of these eluting substances, the elution of BPA in the oral environment is of particular interest due to its role as an endocrine disruptor. For this reason, the release of residual monomers and especially BPA from dental resins has been a cause for public concern. The assessment of patient exposure and potential health risks of dental monomers require a reliable experimental and analytical setup. However, the heterogeneous study design applied in current research hinders biocompatibility testing by impeding comparative analysis of different studies and transfer to the clinical situation. Therefore, this review aims to provide information on each step of a robust experimental and analytical in vitro setup that allows the collection of clinically relevant data and future meta-analytical evaluations.

Surface Modification to Modulate Microbial Biofilms-Applications in Dental Medicine

Recent progress in materials science and nanotechnology has led to the development of advanced materials with multifunctional properties. Dental medicine has benefited from the design of such materials and coatings in providing patients with tailored implants and improved materials for restorative and functional use. Such materials and coatings allow for better acceptance by the host body, promote successful implantation and determine a reduced inflammatory response after contact with the materials. Since numerous dental pathologies are influenced by the presence and activity of some pathogenic microorganisms, novel materials are needed to overcome this challenge as well. This paper aimed to reveal and discuss the most recent and innovative progress made in the field of materials surface modification in terms of microbial attachment inhibition and biofilm formation, with a direct impact on dental medicine.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Quaternary Ammonium Urethane-Dimethacrylate Monomers-A Pilot Study

Six novel urethane-dimethacrylate analogues (QAUDMAs) were synthesized and characterized. They consisted of the 2,4,4,-trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate (TMDI) core and two methacrylate-terminated wings containing quaternary ammonium groups substituted with alkyl chains of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, or 18 carbon atoms. QAUDMAs, due to the presence of quaternary ammonium groups, may have possible antibacterial effects. Since they showed satisfactory physicochemical properties, they will be subjected to further research towards the development of dental composites with a capacity to reduce secondary caries. The synthesis of QAUDMAs included three stages: (i) transesterification of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), (ii) N-alkylation of the tertiary amino group with alkyl bromide, and (iii) addition of TMDI to the intermediate achieved in the second stage. The formation of QAUDMAs was confirmed by ¹H and ¹³C NMR. They were characterized for density (d_m), viscosity (η), refractive index (RI), glass transition temperature (T_g), polymerization shrinkage (S), and degree of conversion (DC). QAUDMAs were yellow, viscous resins (the η values ranged from 1.28 × 10³ to 1.39 × 10⁴ Pa·s, at 50 °C). Their RI ranged from 1.50 to 1.52, T_g from −31 to −15 °C, DC from 53 to 78%, and S from 1.24 to 2.99%, which is appropriate for dental applications.
