Thermal Properties of Hemp Shives Used as Insulation Material in Construction Industry

The article presents the results of studies concerning raw hemp shives obtained from the Polish crop of industrial hemp as a loose-fill thermal insulation material. The study focuses mainly on the measurements of the pore size distribution, thermal conductivity and air permeability of material. An increase in the value of the thermal conductivity coefficient (0.049–0.052 W/(m∙K)) was demonstrated with an increase in the bulk density. The porosity of the individual pieces of shives is 78.7% and the predominant number of pores is in the diameter range of 0.9–3 μm. The paper also presents an example of the use of the tested material as thermal insulation of the wooden frame wall. The heat flow analysis was performed in various wall variants (insulation thickness: 100, 200 and 300 mm and pressure difference 0, 5, 10 and 15 Pa). A clear influence of the variables on the temperature distribution was observed.

Thermal Insulation Mattresses Based on Textile Waste and Recycled Plastic Waste Fibres, Integrating Natural Fibres of Vegetable or Animal Origin

The current context provides, worldwide, the need to identify solutions for the thermal efficiency of constructions, through sustainable and innovative methods and products. A viable solution is to produce thermal insulating products by carding-folding technology, using natural fibres and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and polyester (rPES) waste, converted to fibres. This paper presents experimental results obtained after testing several thermal insulation composite products produced using a mix of sheep wool, cellulose, rPET and rPES fibres. The results of the research demonstrate the thermal insulation properties but, at the same time, identify the benefits of using such materials on the quality of the air in the interior space (the ability to adjust humidity and reduce the concentration of harmful substances). At the same time, the advantages of using sheep wool composite mattresses concerning their resistance to insect attack is demonstrated when compared with ordinary thermal insulation materials. Finally, sensitivity elements of these composites are observed in terms of sensitivity to mould, and to contact with water or soil, drawing future research directions in the development of this type of materials.

Estimation of Thermal Properties of Straw-Based Insulating Panels

Cereal straw is an environmentally friendly, rapidly renewable, and sustainable raw material for manufacturing insulating panels for building engineering. Credible data on thermal properties of insulating panels are crucial for appropriate and accurate design of building envelopes. The objective of the study was to determine and validate thermal properties of the panels made of cereal straw. Specific heat was measured with the calorimetric method. Thermal conductivity was determined with the inverse method and Isomet 2114 instrument, respectively. Both approaches accounted for the temperature influence. The specific heat of the panels was as high as 1600 J/(kg·K), while the thermal conductivity varied in the range from 0.025 to 0.075 W/(m·K) depending on the applied experimental method. The studied properties were validated and their credibility was assessed. High accuracy of heat transfer modeling was obtained for the properties measured with the calorimetric method and identified with inverse modeling.

Production of Particleboard Using Various Particle Size Hemp Shives as Filler

Research was performed into the use of hemp shive as a fast-growing and carbon-storing agricultural waste material in the production of particleboard for the construction industry. Hemp shives were acquired and prepared for board production with the use of milling and sieving to reach two target groups with 0.5 mm to 2 mm and 2 mm to 5.6 mm particle size ranges. The cold pressing method was used to produce hemp boards with Kleiberit urea formaldehyde resin as a binder. The boards were made as 19 mm thick single-layer parts with a density range of 300 ± 30 kg/m³, which qualifies them as low-density boards. Exploratory samples were made using milled hemp fibers with higher density. Additional components such as color pigments and wood finishes were added to test improved features over raw board samples. Tests were performed to determine moisture contents, density range, structural properties, and water absorption amounts. Produced board bending strength reached 2.4 MPa for the coarser particle group and thermal conductivity of 0.057 ± 0.002 W/(mK). The results were compared with existing materials used in the industry or in the development stage to indicate options of developed board applications as indoor insulation material in the construction industry.
