DFT Investigations of the Magnetic Properties of Actinide Complexes

Extension of the D3 and D4 London dispersion corrections to the full actinides series

Efficient dispersion corrections are an indispensable component of modern density functional theory, semi-empirical quantum mechanical, and even force field methods. In this work, we extend the well established D3 and D4 London dispersion corrections to the full actinides series, francium, and radium. To keep consistency with the existing versions, the original parameterization strategy of the D4 model was only slightly modified. This includes improved reference Hirshfeld atomic partial charges at the ωB97M-V/ma-def-TZVP level to fit the required electronegativity equilibration charge (EEQ) model. In this context, we developed a new actinide data set called AcQM, which covers the most common molecular actinide compound space. Furthermore, the efficient calculation of dynamic polarizabilities that are needed to construct CAB6 dispersion coefficients was implemented into the ORCA program package. The extended models are assessed for the computation of dissociation curves of actinide atoms and ions, geometry optimizations of crystal structure cutouts, gas-phase structures of small uranium compounds, and an example extracted from a small actinide complex protein assembly. We found that the novel parameterizations perform on par with the computationally more demanding density-dependent VV10 dispersion correction. With the presented extension, the excellent cost-accuracy ratio of the D3 and D4 models can now be utilized in various fields of computational actinide chemistry and, e.g., in efficient composite DFT methods such as r2SCAN-3c. They are implemented in our freely available standalone codes (dftd4, s-dftd3) and the D4 version will be also available in the upcoming ORCA 6.0 program package.

The resolution of the weak-exchange limit made rigorous, simple and general in binuclear complexes

The correct interpretation of magnetic properties in the weak-exchange regime has remained a challenging task for several decades. In this regime, the effective exchange interaction between local spins is quite weak, of the same order of magnitude or smaller than the various anisotropic terms, which generates a complex set of levels characterized by spin mixing. Although the model multispin Hamiltonian in the absence of local orbital momentum, , is considered good enough to map the experimental energies at zero field and in the strong-exchange limit, theoretical works pointed out limitations of this simple model. This work revives the use of ĤMS from a new theoretical perspective, detailing point-by-point a strategy to correctly map the computational energies and wave functions onto ĤMS, thus validating it regardless of the exchange limit. We will distinguish two cases, based on experimentally characterized dicobalt(II) complexes from the literature. If centrosymmetry imposes alignment of the various rank-2 tensors constitutive of ĤMS in the first case, the absence of any symmetry element prevents such alignment in the second case. In such a context, the strategy provided herein becomes a powerful tool to rationalize the experimental magnetic data, since it is capable of fully and rigorously extracting the multispin model without any assumption on the orientation of its constitutive tensors. Furthermore, the strategy allows to question the use of the spin Hamiltonian approach by explicitly controlling the projection norms on the model space, which is showcased in the second complex where local orbital momentum could have occurred (distorted octahedra). Finally, previous theoretical data related to a known dinickel(II) complex is reinterpreted, clarifying initial wanderings regarding the weak exchange limit.

Electronic Structure and Magneto-Structural Correlations Study of Cu2UL Trinuclear Schiff Base Complexes: A 3d-5f-3d Case

The magnetic properties of trinuclear Schiff base complexes M₂AnLⁱ (M^II = Zn, Cu; An^IV = Th, U; Lⁱ = Schiff base; i = 1-4, 6, 7, 9), exhibiting the [M(μ-O)₂]₂U core structure with adjacent M1···U and M2···U and next-adjacent M1···M2 interactions, featuring 3d-5f-3d subsystems, have been investigated theoretically using relativistic ZORA/B3LYP computations combined with the broken symmetry (BS) approach. Bond order and natural population analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the Cu-O-U coordination is important thus favoring superexchange coupling between the transition metal and the uranium magnetic centers. The calculated coupling constants J_CuU between the Cu and U atoms, agree with the observed shift from the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of the L^1,2,3,4 complexes to the ferromagnetic (ferro) of the L^6,7,9 ones. The structural parameters, i.e., the Cu···U distances and the Cu-O-U angles, as well as the electronic factors driving the magnetic couplings are discussed. The analyses are supported by the study of the mixed ZnCuULⁱ and Cu₂ThLⁱ systems, where in the first complex the Cu^II (3d⁹) ion is replaced by the diamagnetic Zn^II (3d¹⁰) one, whereas in the second complex the U^IV (5f²) paramagnetic center is replaced by the diamagnetic Th^IV (5f⁰) one.

Assessment of Various Density Functional Theory Methods for Finding Accurate Structures of Actinide Complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used computational method for predicting the physical and chemical properties of metals and organometals. As the number of electrons and orbitals in an atom increases, DFT calculations for actinide complexes become more demanding due to increased complexity. Moreover, reasonable levels of theory for calculating the structures of actinide complexes are not extensively studied. In this study, 38 calculations, based on various combinations, were performed on molecules containing two representative actinides to determine the optimal combination for predicting the geometries of actinide complexes. Among the 38 calculations, four optimal combinations were identified and compared with experimental data. The optimal combinations were applied to a more complicated and practical actinide compound, the uranyl complex (UO₂(2,2′-(1E,1′E)-(2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-dyl)bis(azanylylidene)(CH₃OH)), for further confirmation. The corresponding optimal calculation combination provides a reasonable level of theory for accurately optimizing the structure of actinide complexes using DFT.

Covalency of Trivalent Actinide Ions with Different Donor Ligands: Do Density Functional and Multiconfigurational Wavefunction Calculations Corroborate the Observed "Breaks"?

A comprehensive ab initio study of periodic actinide-ligand bonding trends for trivalent actinides is performed. Relativistic density functional theory (DFT) and complete active-space (CAS) self-consistent field wavefunction calculations are used to dissect the chemical bonding in the [AnCl₆]^3-, [An(CN)₆]^3-, [An(NCS)₆]^3-, [An(S₂PMe₂)₃], [An(DPA)₃]^3-, and [An(HOPO)]^- series of actinide (An = U-Es) complexes. Except for some differences for the early actinide complexes with DPA, bond orders and excess 5f-shell populations from donation bonding show qualitatively similar trends in 5f ⁿ active-space CAS vs DFT calculations. The influence of spin-orbit coupling on donation bonding is small for the tested systems. Along the actinide series, chemically soft vs chemically harder ligands exhibit clear differences in bonding trends. There are pronounced changes in the 5f populations when moving from Pu to Am or Cm, which correlate with previously noted "breaks" in chemical trends. Bonding involving 5f becomes very weak beyond Cm/Bk. We propose that Cm(III) is a borderline case among the trivalent actinides that can be meaningfully considered to be involved in ground-state 5f covalent bonding.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.
