A Comprehensive Review of Stimuli-Responsive Smart Polymer Materials-Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Today, smart materials are commonly used in various fields of science and technology, such as medicine, electronics, soft robotics, the chemical industry, the automotive field, and many others. Smart polymeric materials hold good promise for the future due to their endless possibilities. This group of advanced materials can be sensitive to changes or the presence of various chemical, physical, and biological stimuli, e.g., light, temperature, pH, magnetic/electric field, pressure, microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, toxic substances, and many others. This review concerns the newest achievements in the area of smart polymeric materials. The recent advances in the designing of stimuli-responsive polymers are described in this paper.

On the Development of Polylactic Acid/Polycaprolactone Blended Films with High Retention Capacity

The retention capacity of polymers is related to the development of systems that combine high surface-to-volume ratio with good handling and specific functionality. Biodegradability and biocompatibility are also key features for extending the field of applications to areas such as biomedicine. With this in mind, the aim of this work is to develop biodegradable, biocompatible, and highly functionalized porous films, that ensure suitable handling and a good surface-to-volume ratio. Polylactic acid (PLA) is applied as a polymer matrix to which a polycaprolactone with a star-shaped architecture (PCL-COOH) to ensure a high concentration of carboxylic end functionalities is added. The porous films are prepared using the phase inversion technique, which, as shown by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, promotes good dispersion of the PCL-COOH domains. Absorption and release measurements performed with a positively charged model molecule show that the retention capacity and release rate can be tuned by changing the PCL-COOH concentration in the systems. Moreover, the adsorption properties for the formulation with the highest PCL-COOH content are also demonstrated with a real and widely used drug, namely doxorubicin. Finally, the bio- and hemocompatibility of the films, which are enzymatically degradable, are evaluated by using human keratinocytes and red blood cells, respectively.

Photo-responsive nanoporous liquid crystal polymer films for selective dye adsorption

Photo-responsive nanoporous polymer films (AZOF-R(NC6)) have been developed by a template method based on a hydrogen-bonding supramolecular liquid crystal (LC) and a light-sensitive azobenzene LC crosslinker in this work. Anionic nanopores were obtained after the removal of template NC6 using KOH solution. The AZOF-R(NC6) demonstrates charge-selective dye adsorption and the maximum adsorption capacity for Rh6G is 504.6 mg g-1. The AZOF-R(NC6) film without UV light treatment shows a 32% higher adsorption capacity for Rh6G than the AZOF-R(NC6) film treated with UV light within the initial 10 min. In addition, UV light can trigger the release of the adsorbed dye from the polymer film due to the pore size change arising from the trans-cis isomerization. Besides, the used polymer film can be effectively regenerated using a HCl solution. Such functional polymer films with highly ordered nanopores and photo-responsive properties hold great promise in selective adsorption and mass separations.

Thorium Removal, Recovery and Recycling: A Membrane Challenge for Urban Mining

Although only a slightly radioactive element, thorium is considered extremely toxic because its various species, which reach the environment, can constitute an important problem for the health of the population. The present paper aims to expand the possibilities of using membrane processes in the removal, recovery and recycling of thorium from industrial residues reaching municipal waste-processing platforms. The paper includes a short introduction on the interest shown in this element, a weak radioactive metal, followed by highlighting some common (domestic) uses. In a distinct but concise section, the bio-medical impact of thorium is presented. The classic technologies for obtaining thorium are concentrated in a single schema, and the speciation of thorium is presented with an emphasis on the formation of hydroxo-complexes and complexes with common organic reagents. The determination of thorium is highlighted on the basis of its radioactivity, but especially through methods that call for extraction followed by an established electrochemical, spectral or chromatographic method. Membrane processes are presented based on the electrochemical potential difference, including barro-membrane processes, electrodialysis, liquid membranes and hybrid processes. A separate sub-chapter is devoted to proposals and recommendations for the use of membranes in order to achieve some progress in urban mining for the valorization of thorium.

Kinetics of UV Radiation-Induced Fast Collapse and Recovery in Thermally Cycled and Rehydrated Light- and Thermo- Double-Responsive Copolymer Films Probed by In Situ Neutron Reflectivity

The kinetics of UV radiation-induced fast collapse and recovery in thermally cycled and rehydrated light- and thermo- double-responsive copolymer films of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-6-(4-phenylazophenoxy)hexyl acrylate), abbreviated as P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA), are probed by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR). The copolymer film is exposed to a thermal treatment starting at a temperature of 60 °C, which is well above its transition temperature (TT = 53 °C) before the temperature is rapidly decreased from 60 to 23 °C. Based on the applied protocol, the initially collapsed P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) film is rehydrated due to the switching of polymer chains from a more hydrophobic to a more hydrophilic state when the temperature falls below its TT. The whole rehydration process can be divided into 3 stages: D2O absorption, chain rearrangement, and film reswelling. After rehydration, the thermally cycled P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) film is switched by UV irradiation via setting the UV radiation on and off. Considering the UV-induced collapse and recovery, both processes are slower than those observed in freshly hydrated films without any thermal stimulus history. Therefore, the experienced thermal history of the film should be considered in the design of sensors and detectors based on double-responsive copolymer films.

Polymeric Membranes for Biomedical Applications

Polymeric membranes are selective materials used in a wide range of applications that require separation processes, from water filtration and purification to industrial separations. Because of these materials' remarkable properties, namely, selectivity, membranes are also used in a wide range of biomedical applications that require separations. Considering the fact that most organs (apart from the heart and brain) have separation processes associated with the physiological function (kidneys, lungs, intestines, stomach, etc.), technological solutions have been developed to replace the function of these organs with the help of polymer membranes. This review presents the main biomedical applications of polymer membranes, such as hemodialysis (for chronic kidney disease), membrane-based artificial oxygenators (for artificial lung), artificial liver, artificial pancreas, and membranes for osseointegration and drug delivery systems based on membranes.

Novel ABA block copolymers: preparation, temperature sensitivity, and drug release

A new PEGylated macroiniferter was prepared based on the polycondensation reaction of polyethylene oxide (PEO), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-ethanediol (TPED). The macroiniferter consists of PEO end groups and readily reacts with acrylamides (such as N-isopropylacrylamide, NIPAM) and forms ABA block copolymers (PEO-PNIPAM-PEO). This approach of making amphiphilic ABA block copolymers is robust, versatile, and useful, particularly for the development of polymers for biomedical applications. The resulting amphiphilic PEO-PNIPAM-PEO block copolymers are also temperature sensitive, and their phase transition temperatures are close to human body temperature and therefore they have been applied as drug carriers for cancer treatment. Two PEO-PNIPAM-PEO polymers with different molecular weights were prepared and selected to make temperature-sensitive micelles. As a result of the biocompatibility of these micelles, cell viability tests proved that these micelles have low toxicity toward cancer cells. The resultant polymer micelles were then used as drug carriers to deliver the hydrophobic anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), and the results showed that they exhibit significantly higher cumulative drug release efficiency at higher temperatures. Moreover, after loading DOX into the micelles, cellular uptake experiments showed easy uptake and cell viability tests showed that DOX-loaded micelles possess a better therapeutic effect than free DOX at the same dose.

Fast light-switchable polymeric carbon nitride membranes for tunable gas separation

Switchable gas separation membranes are intriguing systems for regulating the transport properties of gases. However, existing stimuli-responsive gas separation membranes suffer from either very slow response times or require high energy input for switching to occur. Accordingly, herein, we introduced light-switchable polymeric carbon nitride (pCN) gas separation membranes with fast response times prepared from melamine precursor through in-situ formation and deposition of pCN onto a porous support using chemical vapor deposition. Our systematic analysis revealed that the gas transport behavior upon light irradiation is fully governed by the polarizability of the permeating gas and its interaction with the charged pCN surface, and can be easily tuned either by controlling the power of the light and/or the duration of irradiation. We also demonstrated that gases with higher polarizabilities such as CO2 can be separated from gases with lower polarizability like H2 and He effectively with more than 22% increase in the gas/CO2 selectivity upon light irradiation. The membranes also exhibited fast response times (<1 s) and can be turned “on” and “off” using a single light source at 550 nm.

Plasmonic nanomaterials with responsive polymer hydrogels for sensing and actuation

Plasmonic nanomaterials have become an integral part of numerous technologies, where they provide important functionalities spanning from extraction and harvesting of light in thin film optical devices to probing of molecular species and their interactions on biochip surfaces. More recently, we witness increasing research efforts devoted to a new class of plasmonic nanomaterials that allow for on-demand tuning of their properties by combining metallic nanostructures and responsive hydrogels. This review addresses this recently emerged vibrant field, which holds potential to expand the spectrum of possible applications and deliver functions that cannot be achieved by separate research in each of the respective fields. It aims at providing an overview of key principles, design rules, and current implementations of both responsive hydrogels and metallic nanostructures. We discuss important aspects that capitalize on the combination of responsive polymer networks with plasmonic nanostructures to perform rapid mechanical actuation and actively controlled nanoscale confinement of light associated with resonant amplification of its intensity. The latest advances towards the implementation of such responsive plasmonic nanomaterials are presented, particularly covering the field of plasmonic biosensing that utilizes refractometric measurements as well as plasmon-enhanced optical spectroscopy readout, optically driven miniature soft actuators, and light-fueled micromachines operating in an environment resembling biological systems.

Bidirectional Actuation of Silk Fibroin Films: Role of Water and Alcohol Vapors

Three-dimensional (3D) shape morphism observed in nature inspires the development of stimuli-responsive soft actuators. Vapor-responsive actuators are promising among the different stimuli-responsive materials due to their capability to produce macroscale movements in response to a minuscule amount of specific chemical vapor. Here, we report unusual multiple vapor-responsive bidirectional macroscale actuation behaviors of single-layer regenerated silk fibroin films. The vapor-responsive silk fibroin actuator exhibits antagonistic actuation characteristics in a reversible manner to both water and ethanol vapors. For instance, it produces an upward bending in the presence of water vapor and downward bending in ethanol vapor, which demonstrates the chemical vapor-specific actuation. However, the actuation characteristics remain largely invariant upon changing the polarity of alcohol molecules. The silk fibroin actuators effectively utilize the vapor-induced minuscule expansion and contraction of the film surface to produce large-scale actuation, which is fully reversible. The intrinsic water content of the films and the vapor pressure of the stimulants are exploited to control the actuation performance. Further, we demonstrated the 3D shape morphing ability of the actuator by generating an undulating wavelike motion via preprogrammed water and ethanol vapor exposure conditions. The change in the actuation direction is instantaneous, which ensures the sensitivity and rapid response of the fabricated actuators.

Polymer-based thermoresponsive hydrogels for controlled drug delivery

controlled drug delivery through hydrogels is generally limited by the poor barrier that polymeric network can create to diffusion mechanism. Stimuli responsive polymers can help in this way guaranteeing that delivery can be sustained and finely controlled using an external stimulus.

this review provides an overview of recent studies about the use of temperature as an external stimulus able to work as an efficient new route of drug's administration. Thermoresponsive hydrogels are discussed and compared in terms of physical properties and mechanism of drug release considering their classification in intrinsically (formed by thermosensitive polymers) and non-intrinsically (polymers with thermosensitive moieties) hydrogels.

thermoresponsive hydrogels can be developed by using different polymers added or not with micro/nanoparticles of organic or inorganic origin. In both cases the final system represents an innovative way for the local and sustained drug delivery in a specific site of the body. In particular, it is possible to obtain an on-demand release of drug by applying a local increase of temperature to the system.

Fabrication of a light-responsive polymer nanocomposite containing spiropyran as a sensor for reversible recognition of metal ions

Poly(spiropyran ethylacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) grafted onto the surface of modified TiO2 (TiO2-g-P(SPEA-co-GMA)) as a novel stimuli-responsive polymer was fabricated and employed as sensor for reversible recognition of metal ions.

Planning of smart gating membranes for water treatment

The use of membranes in desalination and water treatment has been intensively studied in recent years. The conventional membranes however have various problems such as uncontrollable pore size and membrane properties, which prevents membranes from quickly responding to alteration of operating and environmental conditions. As a result the membranes are fouled, and their separation performance is lowered. The preparation of smart gating membranes inspired by cell membranes is a new method to face these challenges. Introducing stimuli-responsive functional materials into traditional porous membranes and use of hydrogels and microgels can change surface properties and membrane pore sizes under different conditions. This review shows potential of smart gating membranes in water treatment. Various types of stimuli-response such as those of thermo-, pH-, ion-, molecule-, UV light-, magnetic-, redox- and electro-responsive gating membranes along with various gel types such as those of polyelectrolyte, PNIPAM-based, self-healing hydrogels and microgel based-smart gating membranes are discussed. Design strategies, separation mechanisms and challenges in fabrication of smart gating membranes in water treatment are also presented. It is demonstrated that experimental and modeling and simulation results have to be utilized effectively to produce smart gating membranes.

Hydration and Thermal Response Kinetics of a Cross-Linked Thermoresponsive Copolymer Film on a Hydrophobic PAN Substrate Coating Probed by In Situ Neutron Reflectivity

The hydration and thermal response kinetics of the cross-linked thermoresponsive copolymer poly((diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate), abbreviated as P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA₃₀₀), thin film on a hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate coating, which resembles a synthetic fabric, is probed by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR). The PAN and monomer (MEO₂MA and OEGMA₃₀₀) solutions are sequentially spin-coated onto a silicon (Si) substrate. Afterward, plasma treatment is applied to realize the cross-linking of PAN and monomers. The as-prepared cross-linked P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA₃₀₀) film on the hydrophobic PAN substrate coating presents a two-layer structure: a substrate-near layer, which is a mixture of PAN and P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA₃₀₀), and a main layer, which is composed of pure hydrophilic P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA₃₀₀). During hydration in D₂O vapor atmosphere, the hydrophobic PAN component prevents the formation of D₂O enrichment in the substrate-near layer. However, an additional vapor-near layer is observed on top of the main layer, which is enriched with D₂O. The hydration process is constrained by the cross-linking points in the film, inducing the relaxation time to be longer than that in a spin-coated P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA₃₀₀) film. Because the as-prepared cross-linked film presents a transition temperature (TT) at 38 °C, the hydrated film switches to the collapsed state when the temperature is increased from 23 to 50 °C. The response to a thermal stimulus is also slower due to the existence of the internal cross-linking points as compared to the spin-coated film. Interestingly, no reswelling is observed at the end of the thermal stimulus, which can be also attributed to the presence of internal cross-linking points.

Efficient scattering model of multilayer systems with anisotropic films

We present an intuitive and efficient method for modeling light propagation in layered isotropic and anisotropic media, which we call the Iterated Ray Method. Considering a single layer sandwiched between semi-infinite layers, the infinite reflected and transmitted rays are summed to obtain effective Fresnel coefficients for the center layer. Thus, the system can be represented as two semi-infinite layers with an effective boundary. The model is coupled to a recursive algorithm to describe an arbitrarily large layered system in the same way. It is numerically stable in the presence of evanescent waves and computationally efficient, both in terms of operation counts and vectorization. We demonstrate its importance for the optical analysis and optimization of layered media, such as those used in photo-addressable liquid crystal cells, thin-film coatings, and Bragg gratings, by measuring the refractive index and thickness of a thin azobenzene dye photo-alignment layer, PAAD-22E, on an indium tin oxide coated glass slide.

WO3/Buckypaper Membranes for Advanced Oxidation Processes

Photocatalytic materials, such as WO₃, TiO₂, and ZnO nanoparticles, are commonly linked onto porous polymer membranes for wastewater treatment, fouling mitigation and permeation enhancement. Buckypapers (BPs) are entanglements of carbon nanotubes, which have been recently proposed as innovative filtration systems thanks to their mechanical, electronic, and thermal properties. In this work, flexible membranes of single wall carbon nanotubes are prepared and characterized as efficient substrates to deposit by chemical vapor deposition thin layers of WO₃ and obtain, in such a way, WO₃/BP composite membranes for application in advanced oxidation processes. The photocatalytic efficiency of WO₃/BP composite membranes is tested against model pollutants in a small continuous flow reactor and compared with the performance of an equivalent homogeneous WO₃-based reactor.

Dynamic Interfacial Regulation by Photodeformable Azobenzene-Containing Liquid Crystal Polymer Micro/Nanostructures

Photoresponsive materials offer local, temporal, and remote control over their chemical or physical properties under external stimuli, giving new tools for interfacial regulation. Among all, photodeformable azobenzene-containing liquid crystal polymers (azo-LCPs) have received increasing attention because they can be processed into various micro/nanostructures and have the potential to reversibly tune the interfacial properties through chemical and/or morphological variation by light, providing effective dynamic interface regulation. In this feature article, we highlight the milestones in the dynamic regulation of different interfacial properties through micro/nanostructures made of photodeformable azobenzene-containing liquid crystal polymers (azo-LCPs). We describe the preparation of different azo-LCP micro/nanostructures from the aspects of materials and processing techniques and reveal the importance of mesogen orientation toward dynamic interfacial regulation. By introducing our recently developed linear azo-LCP (azo-LLCP) with good mechanical and photoresponsive performances, we discuss the challenge and opportunity with respect to the dynamic light regulation of two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) micro/nanostructures to tune their related interfacial properties. We have also given our expectation toward exploring photodeformable micro/nanostructures for advanced applications such as in microfluidics, biosensors, and nanotherapeutics.

Photo-initiated rupture of azobenzene micelles to enable the spectroscopic analysis of antimicrobial peptide dynamics

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) show promise for the treatment of bacterial infections, but many have undesired hemolytic activities. The AMP MP1 not only has broad spectrum bactericidal activity, but has been shown to have antitumor activity. The interaction between AMPs and cellular membranes gives rise to a peptide's cell-specificity and activity. However, direct analysis of the biophysical interactions between peptides and membrane is complex, in part due to the nature of membrane environments as well as structural changes in the peptide that occurs upon binding to the membrane. In order to investigate the interplay between cell selectivity, activity, and secondary structural changes involved in antimicrobial peptide activity, we sought to implement photolizable membrane mimics to assess the types of information available from infrared spectroscopic measurements that follow from photoinitiated peptide dynamics. Azo-surfactants (APEG) form micelles containing a photolizable azobenzene core, which upon irradiation can induce membrane deformation resulting in breakdown of micelles. Spectroscopic analysis of membrane deformation may provide insights into the physical behavior associated with unfolding and dissociation of antimicrobial peptides within a membrane environment. Herein, we synthesized and characterized two new azo-surfactants, APEGTMG and APEGNEt2MeI. Furthermore, we demonstrate the viability of azosurfactants as membrane mimics by examining both the membrane binding and dissociation induced secondary structural changes of the antimicrobial peptide, MP1.

Tailoring Nanohole Plasmonic Resonance with Light-Responsive Azobenzene Compound

Metal-based nanohole structures, featuring a continuous matrix and discrete voids, have seen a wide spectrum of practical applications, ranging from plasmonic sensing to extraordinary optical transmission. It would not be uncommon to pursue further enhancement of their optical tunability, and incorporation with other functional materials offers an intriguing lead. In this study, the first step involves colloidal lithography fabrication of gold-based, short-range ordered nanohole structures on a glass substrate with varying geometrical parameters. Plasmonic resonance in optical waveband is readily achieved from the coupling between bonding surface plasmons and nanohole lattices. Resonant features observed in transmission measurements could also be well reproduced both from numerical simulations as well as theoretical calculations based on the grating coupling mechanism. With the introduction of a thin layer of azobenzene compound by spin-coating comes the critical transformation that not only alters optical performances by impacting the surface environment but also bestows the structures with light responsiveness. After 488 nm of laser irradiation, it is observed that the structures underwent cross polarization conversion, which could be attributed to the photoalignment behavior from trans-cis isomerization within the azobenzene layer, yielding further optical tunability with the linearly polarized probe light compared to that in the preirradiated state. The tuning of plasmonic resonances through light stimuli paves a noncontacting path for achieving desired optical responses with potentially high spatial and temporal resolution. This work may serve as a fountainhead for future efforts on optically tailorable photonic devices associated with nanohole plasmonics.

Automated adherent cell elimination by a high-speed laser mediated by a light-responsive polymer

Conventional cell handling and sorting methods require manual labor, which decreases both cell quality and quantity. To purify adherent cultured cells, cell purification technologies that are high throughput without dissociation and can be utilized in an on-demand manner are expected. Here, we developed a Laser-induced, Light-responsive-polymer-Activated, Cell Killing (LiLACK) system that enables high-speed and on-demand adherent cell sectioning and purification. This system employs a visible laser beam, which does not kill cells directly, but induces local heat production through the trans-cis-trans photo-isomerization of azobenzene moieties. Using this system in each passage for sectioning, human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) maintained their pluripotency and self-renewal during long-term culture. Furthermore, combined with deep machine-learning analysis on fluorescent and phase contrast images, a label-free and automatic cell processing system has been developed by eliminating unwanted spontaneously differentiated cells in undifferentiated hiPSC culture conditions.

Yohei Hayashi et al. present a method for high-speed adherent cell sectioning and purification, along with a label-free and automatic cell processing system. They show that this method is able to section human induced pluripotent stem cells without losing pluripotency and viability.

Fast IR-Actuated Shape-Memory Polymers Using in Situ Silver Nanoparticle-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystals

In recent years, shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have gained a key position in the realm of actuating applications from daily life products to biomedical and aeronautic devices. Most of these SMPs rely mainly on shape changes upon direct heat exposure or after stimulus conversion (e.g., magnetic field and light) to heat, but this concept remains significantly limited when both remote control and fine actuation are demanded. In the present study, we propose to design plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grafted onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as an efficient plasmonic system for fast and remote actuation. Such CNC- g-AgNPs "nanorod-like" structures thereby allowed for a long-distance and strong coupling plasmonic effect between the AgNPs along the CNC axis, thus ensuring a fast photothermal shape-recovery effect upon IR light illumination. To demonstrate the fast and remote actuation promoted by these structures, we incorporated them at low loading (1 wt %) into poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based networks with shape-memory properties. These polymer matrix networks were practically designed from biocompatible PCL oligomers end-functionalized with maleimide and furan moieties in the melt on the basis of thermoreversible Diels-Alder reactions. The as-produced materials could find application in the realm of soft robotics for remote object transportation or as smart biomaterials such as self-tightening knots with antibacterial properties related to the presence of the AgNPs.

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Photocatalyst Nanoparticles on PVDF Membranes for Advanced Oxidation Processes

The chemical binding of photocatalytic materials, such as TiO₂ and ZnO nanoparticles, onto porous polymer membranes requires a series of chemical reactions and long purification processes, which often result in small amounts of trapped nanoparticles with reduced photocatalytic activity. In this work, a chemical vapor deposition technique was investigated in order to allow the nucleation and growth of ZnO and TiO₂ nanoparticles onto polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) porous membranes for application in advanced oxidation processes. The thickness of obtained surface coatings by sputtered nanoparticles was found to depend on process conditions. The photocatalytic efficiency of sputtered membranes was tested against both a model drug and a model organic pollutant in a small continuous flow reactor.

Functionalizable Stereocontrolled Cyclopolyethers by Ring-Closing Metathesis as Natural Polymer Mimics

Whereas complex stereoregular cyclic architectures are commonplace in biomacromolecules, they remain rare in synthetic polymer chemistry, thus limiting the potential to develop synthetic mimics or advanced materials for biomedical applications. Herein we disclose the formation of a stereocontrolled 1,4‐linked six‐membered cyclopolyether prepared by ring‐closing metathesis (RCM). Ru‐mediated RCM, with careful control of the catalyst, concentration, and temperature, selectively affords the six‐membered‐ring cyclopolymer. Under optimized reaction conditions, no metathetical degradation, macrocycle formation, or cross‐linking was observed. Post‐polymerization modification by dihydroxylation afforded a novel polymer family encompassing a poly(ethylene glycol) backbone and sugar‐like functionalities (“PEGose”). This strategy also paves the way for using RCM as an efficient method to synthesize other stereocontrolled cyclopolymers.

Photoswitchable Layer-by-Layer Coatings Based on Photochromic Polynorbornenes Bearing Spiropyran Side Groups

Herein, we present the synthesis of linear photochromic norbornene polymers bearing spiropyran side groups (poly(SP-R)) and their assembly into layer-by-layer (LbL) films on glass substrates when converted to poly(MC-R) under UV irradiation. The LbL films were composed of bilayers of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(MC-R), forming (PAH/poly(MC-R)) _n coatings. The merocyanine (MC) form presents a significant absorption band in the visible spectral region, which allowed tracking of the LbL deposition process by UV-vis spectroscopy, which showed a linear increase of the characteristic MC absorbance band with increasing number of bilayers. The thickness and morphology of the (PAH/poly(MC-R)) _n films were characterized by ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively, with a height of ∼27.5 nm for the first bilayer and an overall height of ∼165 nm for the (PAH/poly(MC-R))₅ multilayer film. Prolonged white light irradiation (22 h) resulted in a gradual decrease of the MC band by 90.4 ± 2.9% relative to the baseline, indicating the potential application of these films as coatings for photocontrolled delivery systems.

Functionalization of single solid state nanopores to mimic biological ion channels: A review

In nature, ion channels are highly selective pores and act as gate to ensure selective ion transport, allowing ions to cross the membrane. By mimicking them, single solid state nanopore devices emerge as a new, powerful class of molecule sensors that allow for the label-free detection of biomolecules (DNA, RNA, and proteins), non-biological polymers, as well as small molecules. In this review, we exhaustively describe the fabrication and functionalization techniques to design highly robust and selective solid state nanopores. First we outline the different materials and methods to design nanopores, we explain the ionic conduction in nanopores, and finally we summarize some techniques to modify and functionalize the surface in order to obtain biomimetic nanopores, responding to different external stimuli.

Electro-Conductive Membranes for Permeation Enhancement and Fouling Mitigation: A Short Review

The research on electro-conductive membranes has expanded in recent years. These membranes have strong prospective as key components in next generation water treatment plants because they are engineered in order to enhance their performance in terms of separation, flux, fouling potential, and permselectivity. The present review summarizes recent developments in the preparation of electro-conductive membranes and the mechanisms of their response to external electric voltages in order to obtain an improvement in permeation and mitigation in the fouling growth. In particular, this paper deals with the properties of electro-conductive polymers and the preparation of electro-conductive polymer membranes with a focus on responsive membranes based on polyaniline, polypyrrole and carbon nanotubes. Then, some examples of electro-conductive membranes for permeation enhancement and fouling mitigation by electrostatic repulsion, hydrogen peroxide generation and electrochemical oxidation will be presented.

Self-Cleaning Membranes from Comb-Shaped Copolymers with Photoresponsive Side Groups

In this study, we present a novel self-cleaning, photoresponsive membrane that is capable of removing predeposited foulant layers upon changes in surface morphology in response to UV or visible light irradiation while maintaining stable pore size and water permeance. These membranes were prepared by creating thin film composite (TFC) membranes by coating a porous support membrane with a thin layer of novel comb-shaped graft copolymers at two side-chain lengths featuring polyacrylonitrile (PAN) backbones and photoreactive side chains, synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Photoregulated control over membrane properties is attained through a light-induced transition, where the side chains switch between a hydrophobic spiropyran (SP) state and a zwitterionic, hydrophilic merocyanine (MC) state. The light-induced switch between the SP and MC forms changes surface hydrophilicity and causes morphological changes on the membrane surface as evidenced by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Before any phototreatment, the as-coated membrane surface comprises mostly hydrophobic SP groups that allow the adsorption of organic solutes such as proteins the membrane surface, reducing flow rate. Once exposed to UV light, conversion of the SP groups to hydrophilic MC groups leads to the release of adsorbed molecules and the full recovery of the initial water flux. A fouled membrane in the more hydrophilic MC form is also capable of self-cleaning upon conversion to the less hydrophilic SP form by visible light irradiation. The self-cleaning behavior observed for this system, where the surface became less hydrophilic but also experienced a morphological change, demonstrates a novel mechanism that has a mechanical component in addition to the changes in hydrophilicity. It is also the first report, to our knowledge, of self-cleaning performance accompanied by a decrease in hydrophilicity.

From pH- to Light-Response: Postpolymerization Modification of Polymer Brushes Grafted onto Microporous Polymeric Membranes

A microporous pH- and light-responsive membrane that enables remote control over its interfacial properties has been fabricated. pH-Responsiveness was imparted to a porous polypropylene film via grafting of poly(methacrylic acid) brushes from the substrate using argon-plasma-induced free-radical graft polymerization. Morphological changes as a function of grafting level were analyzed using atomic force microscopy. Conversion into a light-responsive membrane was performed via postpolymerization modification to covalently attach photochromic spiropyran moieties to the grafted polymer brushes. Reversible switches in wettability and permeability were determined upon changing from acidic to basic pH or upon alternating UV- and visible-light irradiation. Additionally, light-responsive membranes show a switch in color upon UV exposure.

Reversibly Actuating Solid Janus Polymeric Fibers

It is commonly assumed that the substantial element of reversibly actuating soft polymeric materials is chemical cross-linking, which is needed to provide elasticity required for the reversible actuation. On the example of melt spun and three-dimensional printed Janus fibers, we demonstrate here for the first time that cross-linking is not an obligatory prerequisite for reversible actuation of solid entangled polymers, since the entanglement network itself can build elasticity during crystallization. Indeed, we show that not-cross-linked polymers, which typically demonstrate plastic deformation in melt, possess enough elastic behavior to actuate reversibly. The Janus polymeric structure bends because of contraction of the polymer and due to entanglements and formation of nanocrystallites upon cooling. Actuation upon melting is simply due to relaxation of the stressed nonfusible component. This approach opens perspectives for design of solid active materials and actuator for robotics, biotechnology, and smart textile applications. The great advantage of our principle is that it allows design of non-cross-linked self-moving materials, which are able to actuate in both water and air, which are not cross-linked. We demonstrate application of actuating fibers for design of walkers, structures with switchable length, width, and thickness, which can be used for smart textile applications.

Actuating Fibers: Design and Applications

Actuators are devices capable of moving or controlling objects and systems by applying mechanical force on them. Among all kinds of actuators with different shapes, fibrous ones deserve particular attention. In spite of their apparent simplicity, actuating fibers allow for very complex actuation behavior. This review discusses different approaches for the design of actuating fibers, and their advantages and disadvantages. We also discuss the prospects for the design of fibers with advanced architectures and complex actuation behavior.

Photothermal Effects and Applications of Polydimethylsiloxane Membranes with Carbon Nanoparticles

The advent of nanotechnology has triggered novel developments and applications for polymer-based membranes with embedded or coated nanoparticles. As an example, interaction of laser radiation with metallic and carbon nanoparticles has shown to provide optically triggered responses in otherwise transparent media. Incorporation of these materials inside polymers has led to generation of plasmonic and photothermal effects through the enhanced optical absorption of these polymer composites. In this work, we focus on the photothermal effects produced in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes with embedded carbon nanoparticles via light absorption. Relevant physical parameters of these composites, such as nanoparticle concentration, density, geometry and dimensions, are used to analyze the photothermal features of the membranes. In particular, we analyze the heat generation and conduction in the membranes, showing that different effects can be achieved and controlled depending on the physical and thermal properties of the composite material. Several novel applications of these light responsive membranes are also demonstrated, including low-power laser-assisted micro-patterning and optomechanical deformation. Furthermore, we show that these polymer-nanoparticle composites can also be used as coatings in photonic and microfluidic applications, thereby offering an attractive platform for developing light-activated photonic and optofluidic devices.
