Revealing the Exciton Fine Structure in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Unraveling the excitonics of light emission from metal-halide perovskite quantum dots

Metal halide semicondictor perovskites have been under intense investigation for their promise in light absorptive applications like photovoltaics. They have more recently experienced interest for their promise in light emissive applications. A key aspect of perovskites is their glassy, ionic lattice that exhibits dynamical disorder. One possible result of this dynamical disorder is their strong coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom which may confer remarkable properties for light emission such as defect tolerance. How does the system, comprised of excitons, couple to the bath, comprised of lattice modes? How does this system-bath interaction give rise to novel light emissive properties and how do these properties give insight into the nature of these materials? We review recent work from this group in which time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy is used to reveal such insights. Based upon a fast time resolution of 3 ps, energy resolution, and temperature dependence, a wide variety of insights are gleaned. These insights include: lattice contributions to the emission linewidths, multiexciton formation, hot carrier cooling, excitonic fine structure, single dot superradiance, and a breakdown of the Condon approximation, all due to complex structural dynamics in these materials.

Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

A-Site Cation Influence on the Structural and Optical Evolution of Ultrathin Lead Halide Perovskite Nanoplatelets

Imposing quantum confinement has the potential to significantly modulate both the structural and optical parameters of interest in many material systems. In this work, we investigate strongly confined ultrathin perovskite nanoplatelets APbBr3. We compare the all-inorganic and hybrid compositions with the A-sites cesium and formamidinium, respectively. Compared to each other and their bulk counterparts, the materials show significant differences in variable-temperature structural and optical evolution. We quantify and correlate structural asymmetry with the excitonic transition energy, spectral purity, and emission rate. Negative thermal expansion, structural and photoluminescence asymmetry, photoluminescence full width at half-maximum, and splitting between bright and dark excitonic levels are found to be reduced in the hybrid composition. This work provides composition- and structure-based mechanisms for engineering of the excitons in these materials.

Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy Reveals Dynamics within the Bright Fine Structure of CdSe Quantum Dots

Semiconductor quantum dots are characterized by a discrete excitonic structure featuring coarse as well as fine structure. The lowest fine structure states have splittings into bright-dark states which are now well confirmed by single dot spectroscopy. In contrast, the splitting of the lowest coarse exciton into bright-bright fine structure states has not been observed nor the dynamics between these states. Here, we use the unique combination of time and energy resolution of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to directly observe the fine structure splittings into a bright-bright doublet. These splittings are strongly size dependent, with population relaxation on the <100 fs time scale.

Exciton-polaron interactions in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals revealed via two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals have been under intense investigation for their promise in optoelectronic devices due to their remarkable physics, such as liquid/solid duality. This liquid/solid duality may give rise to their defect tolerance and other such useful properties. This duality means that the electronic states are fluctuating in time, on a distribution of timescales from femtoseconds to picoseconds. Hence, these lattice induced energy fluctuations that are connected to polaron formation are also connected to exciton formation and dynamics. We observe these correlations and dynamics in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals of CsPbI3 and CsPbBr3 using two-dimensional electronic (2DE) spectroscopy, with its unique ability to resolve dynamics in heterogeneously broadened systems. The 2DE spectra immediately reveal a previously unobserved excitonic splitting in these 15 nm NCs that may have a coarse excitonic structure. 2D lineshape dynamics reveal a glassy response on the 300 fs timescale due to polaron formation. The lighter Br system shows larger amplitude and faster timescale fluctuations that give rise to dynamic line broadening. The 2DE signals enable 1D transient absorption analysis of exciton cooling dynamics. Exciton cooling within this doublet is shown to take place on a slower timescale than within the excitonic continuum. The energy dissipation rates are the same for the I and Br systems for incoherent exciton cooling but are very different for the coherent dynamics that give rise to line broadening. Exciton cooling is shown to take place on the same timescale as polaron formation, revealing both as coupled many-body excitation.

Size-Dependent Lattice Symmetry Breaking Determines the Exciton Fine Structure of Perovskite Nanocrystals

The order of bright and dark excitonic states in lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals is debated. It has been proposed that the Rashba effect, driven by lattice-induced symmetry breaking, causes a bright excitonic ground state. Direct measurements of excitonic spectra, however, show the signatures of a dark ground state, bringing the role of the Rashba effect into question. We use an atomistic theory to model the exciton fine structure of perovskite nanocrystals, accounting for realistic lattice distortions. We calculate optical gaps and excitonic features that compare favorably with experimental works. The exciton fine structure splittings show a nonmonotonic size dependence due to a structural transition between cubic and orthorhombic phases. Additionally, the excitonic ground state is found to be dark with spin triplet character, exhibiting a small Rashba coupling. We additionally explore the effects of nanocrystal shape on the fine structure, clarifying observations on polydisperse nanocrystals.

Many-Body Correlations and Exciton Complexes in CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots

All-inorganic lead-halide perovskite (LHP) (CsPbX₃ , X = Cl, Br, I) quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a competitive platform for classical light-emitting devices (in the weak light-matter interaction regime, e.g., LEDs and laser), as well as for devices exploiting strong light-matter interaction at room temperature. Many-body interactions and quantum correlations among photogenerated exciton complexes play an essential role, for example, by determining the laser threshold, the overall brightness of LEDs, and the single-photon purity in quantum light sources. Here, by combining cryogenic single-QD photoluminescence spectroscopy with configuration-interaction (CI) calculations, the size-dependent trion and biexciton binding energies are addressed. Trion binding energies increase from 7 to 17 meV for QD sizes decreasing from 30 to 9 nm, while the biexciton binding energies increase from 15 to 30 meV, respectively. CI calculations quantitatively corroborate the experimental results and suggest that the effective dielectric constant for biexcitons slightly deviates from the one of the single excitons, potentially as a result of coupling to the lattice in the multiexciton regime. The findings here provide a deep insight into the multiexciton properties in all-inorganic LHP QDs, essential for classical and quantum optoelectronic devices.

Narrow Intrinsic Line Widths and Electron-Phonon Coupling of InP Colloidal Quantum Dots

InP quantum dots (QDs) are the material of choice for QD display applications and have been used as active layers in QD light-emitting diodes (QDLEDs) with high efficiency and color purity. Optimizing the color purity of QDs requires understanding mechanisms of spectral broadening. While ensemble-level broadening can be minimized by synthetic tuning to yield monodisperse QD sizes, single QD line widths are broadened by exciton-phonon scattering and fine-structure splitting. Here, using photon-correlation Fourier spectroscopy, we extract average single QD line widths of 50 meV at 293 K for red-emitting InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs, among the narrowest for colloidal QDs. We measure InP/ZnSe/ZnS single QD emission line shapes at temperatures between 4 and 293 K and model the spectra using a modified independent boson model. We find that inelastic acoustic phonon scattering and fine-structure splitting are the most prominent broadening mechanisms at low temperatures, whereas pure dephasing from elastic acoustic phonon scattering is the primary broadening mechanism at elevated temperatures, and optical phonon scattering contributes minimally across all temperatures. Conversely for CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs, we find that optical phonon scattering is a larger contributor to the line shape at elevated temperatures, leading to intrinsically broader single-dot line widths than for InP/ZnSe/ZnS. We are able to reconcile narrow low-temperature line widths and broad room-temperature line widths within a self-consistent model that enables parametrization of line width broadening, for different material classes. This can be used for the rational design of more spectrally narrow materials. Our findings reveal that red-emitting InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs have intrinsically narrower line widths than typically synthesized CdSe QDs, suggesting that these materials could be used to realize QDLEDs with high color purity.

A spectroscopic overview of the differences between the absorbing states and the emitting states in semiconductor perovskite nanocrystals

Semiconductor perovskites have been under intense investigation for their promise in optoelectronic applications and their novel and unique physical properties. There have been a variety of material implementations of perovskites from thin films to single crystals to nanocrystals. The nanocrystal form, in particular, is attractive as it enables solution processing and also spectroscopically probes both absorptive and emissive transitions. Broadly, the literature is comprised of experiments of either form, but the experiments are rarely performed in concert and are not discussed in a unified picture. For example, absorptive experiments are typically transient absorption measurements, which aim to measure carrier kinetics and dynamics. In contrast, the emissive experiments largely focus on excitonic fine structures and coupling to phonons. The time resolved emission experiments report on excited state lifetimes and their dependence on temperature. There are broad differences in the spectroscopy techniques and the questions asked in both classes of experiments. Yet there is one measure in common that suggests there are mysteries in our understanding of how the absorbing and emitting states are connected. The linewidth of emission spectra is always larger than the linewidth of absorption spectra. The question of the physics underlying linewidths is complex and is one of the central issues in perovskite nanocrystals. So why are the absorptive and emissive linewidths different? At present even this simple question has no clear answer. The more complex questions of the structure and dynamics of absorptive and emissive states are even more ambiguous. Hence there is a need to connect these experiments and the relevant states. Here, we provide an overview of the salient absorptive and emissive spectroscopy techniques in an effort to begin connecting these two disparate areas of inquiry.

Tiny spots to light the future: advances in synthesis, properties, and application of perovskite nanocrystals in solar cells

Perovskites are in the hotspot of material science and technology. Outstanding properties have been discovered, fundamental mechanisms of defect formation and degradation elucidated, and applications in a wide variety of optoelectronic devices demonstrated. Advances through adjusting the bulk-perovskite composition, as well as the integration of layered and nanostructured perovskites in the devices, allowed improvement in performance and stability. Recently, efforts have been devoted to investigating the effects of quantum confinement in perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) aiming to fabricate optoelectronic devices based solely on these nanoparticles. In general, the applications are focused on light-emitting diodes, especially because of the high color purity and high fluorescence quantum yield obtained in PNCs. Likewise, they present important characteristics featured for photovoltaic applications, highlighting the possibility of stabilizing photoactive phases that are unstable in their bulk analog, the fine control of the bandgap through size change, low defect density, and compatibility with large-scale deposition techniques. Despite the progress made in the last years towards the improvement in the performance and stability of PNCs-based solar cells, their efficiency is still much lower than that obtained with bulk perovskite, and discussions about upscaling of this technology are scarce. In light of this, we address in this review recent routes towards efficiency improvement and the up-scaling of PNC solar cells, emphasizing synthesis management and strategies for solar cell fabrication.

Universal scaling laws for charge-carrier interactions with quantum confinement in lead-halide perovskites

Lead halide perovskites open great prospects for optoelectronics and a wealth of potential applications in quantum optical and spin-based technologies. Precise knowledge of the fundamental optical and spin properties of charge-carrier complexes at the origin of their luminescence is crucial in view of the development of these applications. On nearly bulk Cesium-Lead-Bromide single perovskite nanocrystals, which are the test bench materials for next-generation devices as well as theoretical modeling, we perform low temperature magneto-optical spectroscopy to reveal their entire band-edge exciton fine structure and charge-complex binding energies. We demonstrate that the ground exciton state is dark and lays several millielectronvolts below the lowest bright exciton sublevels, which settles the debate on the bright-dark exciton level ordering in these materials. More importantly, combining these results with spectroscopic measurements on various perovskite nanocrystal compounds, we show evidence for universal scaling laws relating the exciton fine structure splitting, the trion and biexciton binding energies to the band-edge exciton energy in lead-halide perovskite nanostructures, regardless of their chemical composition. These scaling laws solely based on quantum confinement effects and dimensionless energies offer a general predictive picture for the interaction energies within charge-carrier complexes photo-generated in these emerging semiconductor nanostructures.

Exciton linewidth broadening induced by exciton-phonon interactions in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals

Quantum dephasing of excitonic transitions in CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals has been studied using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. The exciton-phonon interactions for acoustic and optical modes exhibit different effects on the coherent dynamics of excitonic transitions. The homogeneous linewidth shows a proportional dependence on the temperature, suggesting the primary dephasing channel of the elastic scattering between exciton and acoustic modes. The exciton-optical mode interaction is manifested as the beatings of off-diagonal signals in the population time domain at the frequencies of 29 and 51 cm^-1, indicating phonon replicas of excitonic transitions arising from coherent exciton-phonon interaction. The insight information of exciton homogeneous broadening in perovskite nanocrystals is essential for the potential application of quantum light sources.
