Polypyrrole-Assisted Ag Doping Strategy to Boost Co(OH)2 Nanosheets on Ni Foam as a Novel Electrode for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Multiplicative rGO/Cu-BDC MOF for 4-nitrophenol reduction and supercapacitor applications

Two-dimensional nanosheets, with their distinct characteristics, are widely used in various applications such as water splitting, supercapacitors, catalysis etc. In this research, we produced Cu-BDC MOF nanosheets by using Cu2O nanotubes for metal ions and H2BDC as the organic linker. We combined these Cu-BDC MOF nanosheets with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form a nanocomposite. The collaboration between Cu-BDC MOF and rGO boosts both the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and the electrochemical capabilities. The conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol is achieved using sodium borohydride as both a reducing agent and a catalyst. The study explores the impact of different concentrations of 4-nitrophenol and sodium borohydride on catalytic efficiency. The increase in sodium borohydride concentration enhances catalytic efficiency by providing more BH4- ions and electrons for the reduction process. The catalytic reduction process adheres to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism with apparent pseudo-first-order kinetics. Specifically, Cu-BDC MOF and rGO/Cu-BDC MOF exhibit specific capacities of 468.4 mA h/g and 656.4 mA h/g at a current density of 2 A/g, respectively, while also enhancing the operating voltage window. Therefore, electrodes based on rGO/Cu-BDC MOF nanosheets present a novel approach for environmental remediation and energy storage applications across various fields.

Improvement of Electrical Conductivity of In Situ Iodine-Doped Polypyrrole Film Using Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Reactor with Capillary Electrodes

To improve the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole (PPy) nanostructure film through in situ iodine (I2) doping, this study proposes an atmospheric pressure plasma reactor (APPR) where heated I2 dopant vapor is fed through capillary electrodes that serve as electrodes for discharge ignition. A large amount of the heated I2 vapor introduced into the reactor separately from a monomer gas can be effectively activated by an intense plasma via capillary electrodes. In particular, intensive plasma is obtained by properly adjusting the bluff body position in the APPR. Based on the ICCD and OES results, the I2 vapor injected through the capillary nozzle electrode is observed to form I2 charge species. The formed I2 species could directly participate in growing in situ I2-doped PPy films. Thus, in situ I2-doped PPy nanostructure films grown using the proposed APPR exhibit higher thicknesses of 15.3 μm and good electrical conductivities, compared to the corresponding non-doped films.

Hierarchical Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 Nanosheet Arrays-Modified Copper Mesh: A Dual-Functional Material for Enhancing Oil/Water Separation and Supercapacitors

The pursuit of superhydrophilic materials with hierarchical structures has garnered significant attention across diverse application domains. In this study, we have successfully crafted Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 nanosheet arrays on a copper mesh (CM) through a synergistic process involving chemical oxidation and hydrothermal deposition. Initially, CuC2O4 nanosheets were synthesized on the copper mesh, closely followed by the growth of Ni-Mn LDHs nanosheets, culminating in the establishment of a multi-tiered surface architecture with exceptional superhydrophilicity and remarkable underwater superoleophobicity. The resultant Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 CM membrane showcased an unparalleled amalgamation of traits, including superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and the ability to harness photocatalytic forces for self-cleaning actions, making it an advanced oil-water separation membrane. The membrane's performance was impressive, manifesting in a remarkable water flux range (70 kL·m-2·h-1) and an efficient oil separation capability for both oil/water mixture and surfactant-stabilized emulsions (below 60 ppm). Moreover, the innate superhydrophilic characteristics of the membrane rendered it a prime candidate for deployment as a supercapacitor cathode material. Evidenced by a capacitance of 5080 mF·cm-2 at a current density of 6 mA cm-2 in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, the membrane's potential extended beyond oil-water separation. This work not only introduces a cutting-edge oil-water separation membrane and supercapacitor electrode but also offers a promising blueprint for the deliberate engineering of hierarchical structure arrays to cater to a spectrum of related applications.

A Facile Two-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Co(OH)2@NiCo2O4 Nanosheet Nanocomposites for Supercapacitor Electrodes

The composites of NiCo₂O₄ with unique structures were substantially investigated as promising electrodes. In this study, the unique structured nanosheets anchored on nickel foam (Ni foam) were prepared under the hydrothermal technique of NiCo₂O₄ and subsequent preparation of Co(OH)₂. The Co(OH)₂@NiCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite has demonstrated higher specific capacitances owing to its excellent specific surface region, enhanced rate properties, and outstanding electrical conductivities. Moreover, the electrochemical properties were analyzed in a three-electrode configuration to study the sample material. The as-designed Co(OH)₂@NiCo₂O₄ nanosheet achieves higher specific capacitances of 1308 F·g^-1 at 0.5 A·g^-1 and notable long cycles with 92.83% capacity retention over 6000 cycles. The Co(OH)₂@NiCo₂O₄ nanosheet electrode exhibits a long life span and high capacitances compared with the NiCo₂O₄ and Co(OH)₂ electrodes, respectively. These outstanding electrochemical properties are mainly because of their porous construction and the synergistic effects between NiCo₂O₄ and Co(OH)₂. Such unique Co(OH)₂@NiCo₂O₄ nanosheets not only display promising applications in renewable storage but also reiterate to scientists of the unlimited potential of high-performance materials.

N, S, O Self-Doped Carbon Derived from Grapefruit Peel for High-Performance Supercapacitors

The development of high-capacity carbon for supercapacitors is highly desirable but challenging. In this work, we design a N, S, O self-doped carbon electrode (NSOC-800) with high capacitance and good stability via the carbonization of grapefruit peel via a one-step KOH activation method without extra dopants. The existence of heteroatoms enables the NSOC-800 to have a high specific capacitance of 280 F/g and a great cycling performance, with 90.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the symmetric supercapacitor with NSOC-800 electrodes delivers a maximum energy density of 5 Wh/kg with a power density of 473 W/kg. Such a promising method to achieve carbon materials with self-doping heteroatwoms is of great significance for developing highly efficient electrodes for energy storage devices.

Hierarchically Developed Ni(OH)2@MgCo2O4 Nanosheet Composites for Boosting Supercapacitor Performance

MgCo₂O₄ nanomaterial is thought to be a promising candidate for renewable energy storage and conversions. Nevertheless, the poor stability performances and small specific areas of transition-metal oxides remain a challenge for supercapacitor (SC) device applications. In this study, sheet-like Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ composites were hierarchically developed on nickel foam (NF) using the facile hydrothermal process with calcination technology, under carbonization reactions. The combination of the carbon-amorphous layer and porous Ni(OH)₂ nanoparticles was anticipated to enhance the stability performances and energy kinetics. The Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite achieved a superior specific capacitance of 1287 F g^-1 at a current value of 1 A g^-1, which is higher than that of pure Ni(OH)₂ nanoparticles and MgCo₂O₄ nanoflake samples. At a current density of 5 A g^-1, the Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite delivered an outstanding cycling stability of 85.6%, which it retained over 3500 long cycles with an excellent rate of capacity of 74.5% at 20 A g^-1. These outcomes indicate that such a Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite is a good contender as a novel battery-type electrode material for high-performance SCs.

MOF-Derived Ultrathin NiCo-S Nanosheet Hybrid Array Electrodes Prepared on Nickel Foam for High-Performance Supercapacitors

At present, binary bimetallic sulfides are widely studied in supercapacitors due to their high conductivity and excellent specific capacitance (SC). In this article, NiCo-S nanostructured hybrid electrode materials were prepared on nickel foam (NF) by using a binary metal-organic skeleton as the sacrificial template via a two-step hydrothermal method. Comparative analysis was carried out with Ni-S and Co-S in situ on NF to verify the excellent electrochemical performance of bimetallic sulfide as an electrode material for supercapacitors. NiCo-S/NF exhibited an SC of 2081 F∙g^-1 at 1 A∙g^-1, significantly superior to Ni-S/NF (1520.8 F∙g^-1 at 1 A∙g^-1) and Co-S/NF (1427 F∙g^-1 at 1 A∙g^-1). In addition, the material demonstrated better rate performance and cycle stability, with a specific capacity retention rate of 58% at 10 A∙g^-1 than at 1 A∙g^-1, and 75.7% of capacity was retained after 5000 cycles. The hybrid supercapacitor assembled by NiCo-S//AC exhibited a high energy density of 25.58 Wh∙kg^-1 at a power density of 400 W∙kg^-1.

Fabrication of SiC Porous Ceramics by Foaming Method

In this work, hierarchically porous SiC ceramics were prepared via the foaming method. Porous ceramics with tunable, uniform, and bimodal pore structures were successfully fabricated in a facile way. The formation mechanisms of the 1st and 2nd modal macropores are the H₂O₂ foaming process and SiC particle overlap, respectively. The effect of pore-foaming agent amount, foaming temperature, and surfactant was investigated. According to the results, with increasing H₂O₂ amount, the porosity, pore size, and interconnectivity of the 1st modal pores increased, whereas bulk density and strength decreased. The porosity increased while the strength decreased as the foaming temperature increased. Surfactants increased pore interconnectivity and porosity. When the foaming temperature was 85 °C, and the addition of H₂O₂ was 5 wt.%, the porosity, bulk density, flexural strength, and compressive strength were 56.32%, 2.8301 g/cm³, 11.94 MPa, and 24.32 MPa, respectively. Moreover, SiC porous ceramics exhibited excellent corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis.

Novel Synthesis of Nano Mg(OH)2 by Means of Hydrothermal Method with Different Surfactants

Magnesium hydroxide (MOH) is a widely used inorganic chemical owing to its various properties. Hence, researchers have long studied its synthesis and its unique features. However, the morphological consequences have rarely been studied. Despite having several benefits for synthesizing nanoparticles, the hydrothermal method's main drawbacks are its lengthy processing time and the high cost of raw materials. This research aimed to use more easily obtainable raw materials in a reasonably short time to synthesize MOH in various morphologies. For this purpose, we prepared different samples using the same hydrothermal method to investigate the effects of the precursor and surfactant on the structure, morphology, and size of MOH particles. The results of XRD and FTIR analysis demonstrated that a temperature of 180 °C and a duration of 18 h is not sufficient for MgO as a precursor to obtaining MOH in the hydrothermal method. However, in the presence of different surfactants, MgCl2 resulted in nanoparticles with hexagonal structure and plate, flake, spherical, and disc morphologies.

In Situ Grown Mesoporous Structure of Fe-Dopant@NiCoOX@NF Nanoneedles as an Efficient Supercapacitor Electrode Material

In this study, we designed mixed metal oxides with doping compound nano-constructions as efficient electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). We successfully prepared the Fe-dopant with NiCoOx grown on nickel foam (Fe-dopant@NiCoOx@NF) through a simple hydrothermal route with annealing procedures. This method provides an easy route for the preparation of high activity SCs for energy storage. Obtained results revealed that the Fe dopant has successfully assisted NiCoOx lattices. The electrochemical properties were investigated in a three-electrode configuration. As a composite electrode for SC characteristics, the Fe-dopant@NiCoOx@NF exhibits notable electrochemical performances with very high specific capacitances of 1965 F g−1 at the current density of 0.5 A g−1, and even higher at 1296 F g−1 and 30 A g−1, respectively, which indicate eminent and greater potential for SCs. Moreover, the Fe-dopant@NiCoOx@NF nanoneedle composite obtains outstanding cycling performances of 95.9% retention over 4500 long cycles. The improved SC activities of Fe-dopant@NiCoOx@NF nanoneedles might be ascribed to the synergistic reactions of the ternary mixed metals, Fe-dopant, and the ordered nanosheets grown on NF. Thus, the Fe-dopant@NiCoOx@NF nanoneedle composite with unique properties could lead to promising SC performance.

A Novel High Temperature Fuel Cell Proton Exchange Membrane with Nanoscale Phase Separation Structure Based on Crosslinked Polybenzimidazole with Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride)

A semi-aromatic polybenzimidazole (DPBI) is synthesized via polycondensation of decanedioic acid (DCDA) and 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) in a mixed phosphorus pentoxide/methanesulfonic acid (PPMA) solvent. Ascribing to in-situ macromolecular crosslinker of ploly((vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC), a robust crosslinked DPBI membrane (DPBI-xPVBC, x refers to the weight percentage of PVBC in the membrane) can be obtained. Comprehensive properties of the DPBI and DPBI-xPVBC membranes are investigated, including chemical structure, antioxidant stability, mechanical strength, PA uptake and electrochemical performances. Compared with pristine DPBI membrane, the PA doped DPBI-xPVBC membranes exhibit excellent antioxidative stability, high proton conductivity and enhanced mechanical strength. The PA doped DPBI-10PVBC membrane shows a proton conductivity of 49 mS cm^-1 at 160 °C without humidification. Particularly, it reveals an enhanced H₂/O₂ single cell performance with the maximum peak power density of 405 mW cm^-2, which is 29% higher than that of pristine DPBI membrane (314 mW cm^-2). In addition, the cell is very stable in 50 h, indicating the in-situ crosslinked DPBI with a macromolecular crosslinker of PVBC is an efficient way to improve the overall performance of HT-PEMs for high performance HT-PEMFCs.

Polypyrrole-Coated Low-Crystallinity Iron Oxide Grown on Carbon Cloth Enabling Enhanced Electrochemical Supercapacitor Performance

It is highly attractive to design pseudocapacitive metal oxides as anodes for supercapacitors (SCs). However, as they have poor conductivity and lack active sites, they generally exhibit an unsatisfied capacitance under high current density. Herein, polypyrrole-coated low-crystallinity Fe₂O₃ supported on carbon cloth (D-Fe₂O₃@PPy/CC) was prepared by chemical reduction and electrodeposition methods. The low-crystallinity Fe₂O₃ nanorod achieved using a NaBH₄ treatment offered more active sites and enhanced the Faradaic reaction in surface or near-surface regions. The construction of a PPy layer gave more charge storage at the Fe₂O₃/PPy interface, favoring the limitation of the volume effect derived from Na⁺ transfer in the bulk phase. Consequently, D-Fe₂O₃@PPy/CC displayed enhanced capacitance and stability. In 1 M Na₂SO₄, it showed a specific capacitance of 615 mF cm^-2 (640 F g^-1) at 1 mA cm^-2 and still retained 79.3% of its initial capacitance at 10 mA cm^-2 after 5000 cycles. The design of low-crystallinity metal oxides and polymer nanocomposites is expected to be widely applicable for the development of state-of-the-art electrodes, thus opening new avenues for energy storage.

Combined Gold Recovery and Nanoparticle Synthesis in Microbial Systems Using Fractional Factorial Design

Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using microorganisms has been generally studied aiming for high-yield production and morphologies appropriated for various applications, such as bioremediation, (bio)sensors, and (bio)catalysis. Numerous approaches showed the individual effect of factors influencing the synthesis of AuNPs with limited analysis of the governing factors enhancing the production and desired quality of the precipitates. This study proposes a fractional-factorial design to investigate the simultaneous influence of seven environmental factors (cell concentration, temperature, anoxic/oxic conditions, pH, gold concentration, electron donor type, and bacterial species) on the recovery yield and synthesis of targeted AuNPs. Various sizes and morphologies of the AuNPs were obtained by varying the environmental factors studied. The factors with significant effects (i.e., 0.2 mM Au and pH 5) were selected according to statistical analysis for optimal removal of 88.2 ± 3.5% of gold and with the production of valuable 50 nm AuNPs, which are known for their enhanced sensitivity. Implications of the cytochrome-C on the bacterial mechanisms and the provision of electron donors via an electrochemical system are further discussed. This study helps develop gold recovery and nanoparticle synthesis methods, focusing on the determining factor(s) for efficient, low-cost, green synthesis of valuable materials.

Mechanical and Recyclable Properties of Polyimine Enhanced by Biomimetic Modification of Graphene Oxide Sheets/Silicon Carbide Nano-Whiskers

Inspired by the mineral bridge between hard phase layers of natural nacre, the biomimetic modified silicon carbide nano-whiskers (MSiCw)/graphene oxide sheets (MGO) reinforced polyimine (PI) composites (MSiCw-MGO-PI) were successfully prepared by heat-pressing at room temperature, which confirmed by FTIR, XPS, and XRD tests. According to the results of mechanical tests, the composites with filling weights of MSiCw and MGO, which were found to be 1% and 0.3%, presented tensile strength of 94.27 MPa, which was 32% higher than the matrix. With the additional weights amount of 1%MSiCw and 0.2%MGO, the impact strength of the composites reached 17.46 KJ/m², which was increased by 81% compared with the matrix. In addition, the reinforcing mechanisms, such as the bridging principle and mechanism of whiskers pulling out, were investigated by analyzing the fracture surface of MSiCw-MGO-PI composites. The results showed that MSiCw and MGO can synergistically improve the mechanical properties of the composites. In addition, the recyclability of the composites valued by the mechanical properties of the composites from regrinding and heat pressing showed that three generations of MSiCw-MGO-PI composites can still maintain high mechanical properties on account of the better dispersion of the reinforcing phases in the matrix from regrinding.

Superhydrophobic and Electrochemical Performance of CF2-Modified g-C3N4/Graphene Composite Film Deposited by PECVD

The physicochemical properties of functional graphene are regulated by compositing with other nano-carbon materials or modifying functional groups on the surface through plasma processes. The functional graphene films with g-C₃N₄ and F-doped groups were produced by controlling the deposition steps and plasma gases via radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD). The first principles calculation and electrochemistry characteristic of the functional graphene films were performed on Materials Studio software and an electrochemical workstation, respectively. It is found that the nanostructures of functional graphene films with g-C₃N₄ and F-doped groups were significantly transformed. The introduction of fluorine atoms led to severe deformation of the g-C₃N₄ nanostructure, which created gaps in the electrostatic potential of the graphene surface and provided channels for electron transport. The surface of the roving fabric substrate covered by pure graphene is hydrophilic with a static contact angle of 79.4°, but the surface is transformed to a hydrophobic state for the g-C₃N₄/graphene film with an increased static contact angle of 131.3° which is further improved to 156.2° for CF₂-modified g-C₃N₄/graphene film exhibiting the stable superhydrophobic property. The resistance of the electron movement of CF₂-modified g-C₃N₄/graphene film was reduced by 2% and 76.7%, respectively, compared with graphene and g-C₃N₄/graphene.
