Abstract
The benefits of using biopolymers for the development of films and coatings are well known. The enrichment of these material properties through various natural additions has led to their applicability in various fields. Essential oils, which are well-known for their beneficial properties, are widely used as encapsulating agents in films based on biopolymers. In this study, we developed biopolymer-based films and tested their properties following the addition of 7.5% and 15% (w/v) essential oils of lemon, orange, grapefruit, cinnamon, clove, chamomile, ginger, eucalyptus or mint. The samples were tested immediately after development and after one year of storage in order to examine possible long-term property changes. All films showed reductions in mass, thickness and microstructure, as well as mechanical properties. The most considerable variations in physical properties were observed in the 7.5% lemon oil sample and the 15% grapefruit oil sample, with the largest reductions in mass (23.13%), thickness (from 109.67 µm to 81.67 µm) and density (from 0.75 g/cm3 to 0.43 g/cm3). However, the microstructure of the sample was considerably improved. Although the addition of lemon essential oil prevented the reduction in mass during the storage period, it favored the degradation of the microstructure and the loss of elasticity (from 16.7% to 1.51% for the sample with 7.5% lemon EO and from 18.28% to 1.91% for the sample with 15% lemon EO). Although the addition of essential oils of mint and ginger resulted in films with a more homogeneous microstructure, the increase in concentration favored the appearance of pores and modifications of color parameters. With the exception of films with added orange, cinnamon and clove EOs, the antioxidant capacity of the films decreased during storage. The most obvious variations were identified in the samples with lemon, mint and clove EOs. The most unstable samples were those with added ginger (95.01%), lemon (92%) and mint (90.22%).

Abstract
The ultimate goal of new food packaging technologies, in addition to maintaining the quality and safety of food for the consumer, is to consider environmental concerns and reduce its impacts. In this regard, one of the solutions is to use eco-friendly biopolymers instead of conventional petroleum-based polymers. However, the challenges of using biopolymers in the food packaging industry should be carefully evaluated, and techniques to eliminate or minimize their disadvantages should be investigated. Many studies have been conducted to improve the properties of biopolymer-based packaging materials to produce a favorable product for the food industry. This article reviews the structure of biopolymer-based materials and discusses the trends and challenges of using these materials in food packaging technologies with the focus on nanotechnology and based on recent studies.

The Structure and Mechanical Properties of Hemp Fibers-Reinforced Poly(ε-Caprolactone) Composites Modified by Electron Beam Irradiation. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2021. Abstract
The need for the development of new biodegradable materials and modification of the properties the current ones possess has essentially increased in recent years. The aim of this study was the comparison of changes occurring in poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) due to its modification by high-energy electron beam derived from a linear electron accelerator, as well as the addition of natural fibers in the form of cut hemp fibers. Changes to the fibers structure in the obtained composites and the geometrical surface structure of sample fractures with the use of scanning electron microscopy were investigated. Moreover, the mechanical properties were examined, including tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural modulus and impact strength of the modified PCL. It was found that PCL, modified with hemp fibers and/or electron radiation, exhibited enhanced flexural modulus but the elongation at break and impact strength decreased. Depending on the electron radiation dose and the hemp fibers content, tensile strength decreased or increased. It was also found that hemp fibers caused greater changes to the mechanical properties of PCL than electron radiation. The prepared composites exhibited uniform distribution of the dispersed phase in the polymer matrix and adequate adhesion at the interface between the two components.

Abstract
Abstract
Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester that has advantages over other biopolymers, making it an extensively researched polymer. PCL is a hydrophobic, slow-degrading, synthetic polymer making it particularly interesting for the preparation of long-term implantable devices and a variety of drug delivery systems. Recently, PCL has been used for additional applications including food packaging and tissue engineering. In this chapter, the processing methods and characterization of PCL will be discussed. The chapter will summarize the synthesis of poly(α-hydroxy acid) and the ring-opening polymerization of PCL. Discussion on the biodegradability of PCL will be reviewed. The biomedical applications of PCL, such as, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, and tissue engineering will be also summarized. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a characterization section outlining recent studies focusing on PCL based composites and films.

Abstract
Coconut neera is a nutritious natural drink that is rich in amino acids, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Nevertheless, the inherent presence of yeast activates natural fermentation. To prevent the fermentation process, it is necessary to reduce the yeast load in fresh neera, at the earliest possible. In this research, an electrospun polycaprolactone nanofibrous membrane was used for the removal of yeast from coconut neera. Randomly oriented non-woven nanofibers were fabricated using the electrospinning process. The process conditions were optimized at 15 kV applied voltage, 8 cm distance between the spinneret needle and the collector plate, and 1.6 ml/h feed flow rate for the best nanofiber characteristics and high filtration efficiency. The optimized nanofibrous membrane for neera filtration had an average fiber diameter of 942 nm, average porosity of 73.26%, and a mean thickness of 150 µm. Results confirmed that the porosity of the membrane had a significant effect on the flow rate of permeate. The biochemical characteristics of neera filtrate were investigated. In comparison with fresh neera, the filtered counterpart had significant changes in titratable acidity, pH, and color. While no significant changes were observed in total soluble solids content, slight reductions were noted in the total polyphenolic content and minerals. Importantly, the neera filtrate obtained through the optimized nanofibrous membrane showed a 2 log-reduction in yeast load. The effective reusability of the membrane and stability of the nanofiber morphology at repeated usage was confirmed. This approach shows prospects for neera filtration while retaining nutrient content and can be extended to other natural extract applications.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis (AS) as the leading cause of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events has been paid much attention all the time. With the continuous development of modern medical drug treatment, surgical treatment, interventional treatment and other methods, the mortality rate of AS has shown a downward trend, while the morbidity rate is still increasing. Oral lipid-lowering or anti-inflammatory drugs are generally used for early AS, but the relatively low accumulation efficiency in lesions and the unavoidable side effects required researchers to develop more effective drug delivery approaches for the therapy of AS. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles as nanocarrier for drug delivery have received extensive attentions due to their flexible size, high specific surface area, controlled pore volume, high drug loading capacity and excellent biocompatibility. Series of good reviews about the mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded drugs for cancer therapy have been well documented. However, their roles as nanocarrier for drug delivery to treat AS have few reports. In this review, the applications and challenges of mesoporous silica nanomaterials in the field of the diagnosis and therapy of AS have been summarized. The classification, synthesis, formation mechanism, surface modification and functionalization of mesoporous silica nanomaterials which were closely related to the theranostic effect of AS have also been included. Last but not the least, the future prospects’ suggestions of mesoporous silica nanomaterial-based drug delivery system for AS are also provided.

Abstract
Antioxidant films based on poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) containing almond skin extract (ASE) were developed for food packaging applications. The effect of ASE incorporation on the morphological, structural, colour, mechanical, thermal, barrier and antioxidant properties of the prepared films were evaluated. The structural, tensile and thermal properties of the films were not altered due to ASE addition. Although no significant differences were observed for the oxygen permeability of samples, some increase in water absorption and water vapour permeability was observed for active films due to the hydrophilic character of ASE phenolic compounds, suggesting the suitability of this novel packaging for fatty foods conservation. ASE conferred antioxidant properties to PCL films as determined by the DPPH radical scavenging activity. The efficiency of the developed films was evaluated by the real packaging application of fried almonds at different ASE contents (0, 3, 6 wt.%) up to 56 days at 40 °C. The evolution of peroxide and p-anisidine values, hexanal content, fatty acid profile and characteristic spectroscopy bands showed that active films improved fried almonds stability. The results suggested the potential of PCL/ASE films as sustainable and antioxidant food packaging systems to offer protection against lipid oxidation in foods.
