Residential greenspace and major depression among older adults living in urban and suburban areas with different climates across the United States

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Residential greenspace could alleviate depression - a leading cause of disability. Fewer studies of depression and greenspace have considered major depression, and, to our knowledge, none have considered how climate, which determines vegetation abundance and type, may change the impacts of greenspace. Our aim was to investigate whether residential greenspace is associated with major depression among older adults and explore effect modification by climate.

METHODS

We used biennial interviews between 2008 and 2016 from the Health and Retirement Study. We calculated greenness within walking distance of home addresses as the maximum NDVI for the year of each participant interview averaged within a 1 km buffer. Reflecting clinical criteria, a score of ≥5 on the CIDI-SF indicated major depression in the preceding 12-months. We characterized climate using Köppen-Geiger classifications. To estimate prevalence ratios, we used Poisson regression. Our models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, geography, annual sunshine, and bluespace.

RESULTS

The 21,611 eligible participants were 65 ± 10 years old on average, 55% female, 81% White, 12% Black, 10% Hispanic/Latino, and 31% had at least a 4-year college degree. The 12-month prevalence of a major depression was 8%. In adjusted models, more residential greenspace was associated with a lower prevalence of major depression (prevalence ratio per IQR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.84 to 0.98). There was evidence of effect modification by climate (P forinteraction, 0.062). We observed stronger associations in tropical (prevalence ratio per IQR 0.69; 95% CI, 0.47 to 1.01) and cold (prevalence ratio per IQR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.74 to 0.93) climates compared to arid (prevalence ratio per IQR 0.99; 95% CI, 0.90 to 1.09) and temperate (prevalence ratio per IQR 0.98; 95% CI, 0.86 to 1.11) climates.

CONCLUSIONS

Residential greenspace may help reduce major depression. However, climate may influence how people benefit from greenspace.

Greener residential environment is associated with increased bacterial diversity in outdoor ambient air

In urban areas, exposure to greenspace has been found to be beneficial to human health. The biodiversity hypothesis proposed that exposure to diverse ambient microbes in greener areas may be one pathway leading to health benefits such as improved immune system functioning, reduced systemic inflammation, and ultimately reduced morbidity and mortality. Previous studies observed differences in ambient outdoor bacterial diversity between areas of high and low vegetated land cover but didn't focus on residential environments which are important to human health. This research examined the relationship between vegetated land and tree cover near residence and outdoor ambient air bacterial diversity and composition. We used a filter and pump system to collect ambient bacteria samples outside residences in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan area and identified bacteria by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Geospatial quantification of total vegetated land or tree cover was conducted within 500 m of each residence. Shannon's diversity index and weighted UniFrac distances were calculated to measure α (within-sample) and β (between-sample) diversity, respectively. Linear regression for α-diversity and permutational analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) for β-diversity were used to model relationships between vegetated land and tree cover and bacterial diversity. Data analysis included 73 ambient air samples collected near 69 residences. Analysis of β-diversity demonstrated differences in ambient air microbiome composition between areas of high and low vegetated land (p = 0.03) and tree cover (p = 0.07). These relationships remained consistent among quintiles of vegetated land (p = 0.03) and tree cover (p = 0.008) and continuous measures of vegetated land (p = 0.03) and tree cover (p = 0.03). Increased vegetated land and tree cover were also associated with increased ambient microbiome α-diversity (p = 0.06 and p = 0.03, respectively). To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate associations between vegetated land and tree cover and the ambient air microbiome's diversity and composition in the residential ecosystem.

Types and spatial contexts of neighborhood greenery matter in associations with weight status in women across 28 U.S. communities

Excess body weight is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. Studies have identified neighborhood greenery as supportive of healthy weight. However, few have considered plausible effect pathways for ecosystem services (e.g., heat mitigation, landscape aesthetics, and venues for physical activities) or potential variations by climate. This study examined associations between weight status and neighborhood greenery that capture ecosystem services most relevant to weight status across 28 U.S. communities. Weight status was defined by body mass index (BMI) reported for 6591 women from the U.S. Sister Study cohort. Measures of greenery within street and circular areas at 500 m and 2000 m buffer distances from homes were derived for each participant using 1 m land cover data. Street area was defined as a 25 m-wide zone on both sides of street centerlines multiplied by the buffer distances, and circular area was the area of the circle centered on a home within each of the buffer distances. Measures of street greenery characterized the pedestrian environment to capture physically and visually accessible greenery for shade and aesthetics. Circular greenery was generated for comparison. Greenery types of tree and herbaceous cover were quantified separately, and a combined measure of tree and herbaceous cover (i.e., aggregate greenery) was also included. Mixed models accounting for the clustering at the community level were applied to evaluate the associations between neighborhood greenery and the odds of being overweight or obese (BMI > 25) with adjustment for covariates selected using gradient boosted regression trees. Analyses were stratified by climate zone (arid, continental, and temperate). Tree cover was consistently associated with decreased odds of being overweight or obese. For example, the adjusted odds ratio [AOR] was 0.92, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 0.88-0.96, given a 10% increase in street tree cover at the 2000 m buffer across the 28 U.S. communities. These associations held across climate zones, with the lowest AOR in the arid climate (AOR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.54-1.01). In contrast, associations with herbaceous cover varied by climate zone. For the arid climate, a 10% increase in street herbaceous cover at the 2000 m buffer was associated with lower odds of being overweight or obese (AOR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.55-1.03), whereas the association was reversed for the temperate climate, the odds increased (AOR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05-1.35). Associations between greenery and overweight/obesity varied by type and spatial context of greenery, and climate. Our findings add to a growing body of evidence that greenery design in urban planning can support public health. These findings also justify further defining the mechanism that underlies the observed associations.

Monitoring Spatiotemporal Changes of Impervious Surfaces in Beijing City Using Random Forest Algorithm and Textural Features

As the capital city of China, Beijing has experienced unprecedented economic and population growth and dramatic impervious surface changes during the last few decades. An application of the classification method combining the spectral and textural features based on Random Forest was conducted to monitor the spatial and temporal changes of Beijing’s impervious surfaces. This classification strategy achieved excellent performance in the impervious surface extraction in complex urban areas, as the Kappa coefficient reached 0.850. Based on this strategy, the impervious surfaces inside Beijing’s sixth ring road in 1997, 2002, 2007, 2013, and 2017 were extracted. As the development of Beijing has a special regional feature, the changes of impervious surfaces within the sixth ring road were assessed. The findings are as follows: (1) the textural features can significantly improve the classification accuracy of land cover in urban areas, especially for the impervious surface with high albedo. (2) Impervious surfaces within the sixth ring road expanded dramatically from 1997 to 2017, had three expanding periods: 1997–2002, 2002–2007, and 2013–2017, and only shrank in 2007–2013. There are different possible major driving factors for each period. (3) The region between the fifth and sixth ring roads in Beijing underwent the most significant changes in the two decades. (4) The inner three regions are relatively highly urbanized areas compared to the outer two regions. Urbanization processes in the interior regions tend to be completed compared to the exterior regions.
