Surface Plasmon Enhanced Fluorescence Temperature Mapping of Aluminum Nanoparticle Heated by Laser

Spallation of Isolated Aluminum Nanoparticles by Rapid Photothermal Heating

The spallation of isolated aluminum (Al) nanoparticles (NPs) is initiated using rapid photothermal heating. The Al NPs exhibited a nominal diameter of 120 nm, with an average oxide shell thickness of 3.8 nm. Photothermal heating was achieved by coupling a focused laser (446 nm wavelength) to an optical grating substrate and to the plasmonic resonance of the Al NPs themselves. These factors enhanced the absorption cross section by a factor of 8-18 compared to no substrate and generated an Al NP heating rate on the order of 10⁷-10⁸ K/s. Observations indicate that molten Al is ejected from the heated NP, indicating that melting of the Al core is required for spallation. A graphene layer atop the grating substrate encouraged the formation of discrete particles of ejected Al, while irregular elongated filament products were observed without the graphene layer. Numerical simulations indicate that laser-heated Al NPs reach temperatures between approximately 1000 and 1500 K. These observations and experimental conditions are consistent with those anticipated for the melt dispersion mechanism, a thermomechanical reaction mechanism that has not previously been clearly demonstrated. Activating and controlling this mechanism is anticipated to enhance applications ranging from biological phototherapy to energetic materials.

Large-area fluorescence enhancement of R6G based on a uniform PVA-Au plasmonic substrate

With the development of surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) spectroscopy technology, uniform and low-cost SEF substrate is urgently needed. In this paper, the nanocomposite films of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) embedded with in-situ Au particles, their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands locate at different wavelengths from 525 nm to 569 nm, were used as substrates to enhance the fluorescence of rhodamine 6 G (R6G). The results shows that the uniform light emission in large area can be measured, and the maximum enhancement factor (EF) is about 13 folds. With increasing concentration of R6G films, the EF first increases and then slowly decreases. It is demonstrated that the EF greatly depends on the matching degree of the emission/excitation of R6G and the LSPR band of PVA-Au substrate. All the results further suggests that the PVA-Au substrate not only realize the fluorescence enhancement but also attenuates the fluorescence quenching at higher concentration. In addition, the local electric distribution of the substrate is simulated by using three-dimensional finite different time-domain (FDTD) to further demonstrate the mechanism of the SEF. This substrate has good development prospects in the fields of fluorescent probes and fluorescence imaging, which can be beneficial to the development of uniform and low-cost SEF substrate.

Spatially Resolved Temperature Distribution in a Rare-Earth-Doped Transparent Glass-Ceramic

Knowing the temperature distribution within the conducting walls of various multilayer-type materials is crucial for a better understanding of heat-transfer processes. This applies to many engineering fields, good examples being photovoltaics and microelectronics. In this work we present a novel fluorescence technique that makes possible the non-invasive imaging of local temperature distributions within a transparent, temperature-sensitive, co-doped Er:GPF1Yb0.5Er glass-ceramic with micrometer spatial resolution. The thermal imaging was performed with a high-resolution fluorescence microscopy system, measuring different focal planes along the z-axis. This ultimately enabled a precise axial reconstruction of the temperature distribution across a 500-µm-thick glass-ceramic sample. The experimental measurements showed good agreement with computer-modeled heat simulations and suggest that the technique could be adopted for the spatial analyses of local thermal processes within optically transparent materials. For instance, the technique could be used to measure the temperature distribution of intermediate, transparent layers of novel ultra-high-efficiency solar cells at the micron and sub-micron levels.
