Abstract
The quality of underwater bridge piers significantly impacts bridge safety and long-term usability. To address limitations in conventional inspection methods, this paper presents a sonar-based technique for the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and visualization of underwater bridge piers. Advanced MS1000 scanning sonar is employed to detect and image bridge piers. Automated image preprocessing, including filtering, denoising, binarization, filling, and morphological operations, introduces an enhanced wavelet denoising method to accurately extract the foundation contour coordinates of bridge piers from sonar images. Using these coordinates, along with undamaged pier dimensions and sonar distances, a model-driven approach for a 3D pier reconstruction algorithm is developed. This algorithm leverages multiple sonar data points to reconstruct damaged piers through multiplication. The Visualization Toolkit (VTK) and surface contour methodology are utilized for 3D visualization, enabling interactive manipulation for enhanced observation and analysis. Experimental results indicate a relative error of 13.56% for the hole volume and 10.65% for the spalling volume, demonstrating accurate replication of bridge pier defect volumes by the reconstructed models. Experimental validation confirms the method's accuracy and effectiveness in reconstructing underwater bridge piers in three dimensions, providing robust support for safety assessments and contributing significantly to bridge stability and long-term safety assurance.

Abstract
The design, fabrication and characterization of a cost-efficient oceanographic instrument with microfabricated sensors for measuring conductivity, temperature and depth of seawater are presented. Conductivity and temperature sensors were fabricated using MEMS technology, which allows for customized small footprints and low production costs. Dedicated electronics for reading, processing and storing acquired sensor data are described. The developed instrument enables the measurement of seawater conductivity in a range from 4 mS/cm to 70 mS/cm. The conductivity measurement is temperature-compensated in the range from 2 °C to 40 °C, with an accuracy of ±0.1 mS/cm. The temperature sensor's stability is 0.025 °C. The depth/pressure measurement range is up to 2000 m/200 bar, with a resolution of 0.1 bar. Temperature and conductivity sensor performance was assessed using laboratory equipment and designed electronics. The conductivity sensor was temperature-compensated to 0.01 mS/cm. The conductivity sensor electrode corrosion effect is presented below and was eliminated through adaptation of a signal acquisition circuit. Custom software was developed for monitoring critical conductivity sensor parameters (currents, voltages). A variation of 0.4% between cell conductance currents and voltages was established as a criterion for stable conductivity sensor operation.

Abstract
Recent advancements in marine technology have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced underwater acoustic applications, from sonar detection to communication and noise cancellation, driving the pursuit of innovative transducer technologies. In this paper, a new underwater thermoacoustic (TA) transducer made from carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge is designed to achieve wide bandwidth, high energy conversion efficiency, simple structure, good transient response, and stable sound response, utilizing the TA effect through electro-thermal modulation. The transducer has potential application in underwater acoustic communication. An electro-thermal-acoustic coupled simulation for the open model, sandwich model, and encapsulated model is presented to analyze the transient behaviors of CNT sponge TA transducers in liquid environments. The effects of key design parameters on the acoustic performances of both systems are revealed. The results demonstrate that a short pulse excitation with a low duty cycle could greatly improve the heat dissipation of the encapsulated transducer, especially when the thermoacoustic response time becomes comparable to thermal relaxation time.

Abstract
Calibration-free sensors are generally understood as analytical tools with no need for calibration apart from the initial one (i.e., after its fabrication). However, an "ideal" and therefore "more restricted" definition of the concept considers that no calibration is necessary at all, with the sensor being capable of directly providing the analyte concentration in the sample. In the electroanalysis field, investigations have been directed to charge-based readouts (i.e., coulometry) that allow for concentration calculation via the Faraday Law: The sample volume must be precisely defined and the absoluteness of the electrochemical process in which the analyte is involved must be ensured (i.e., the analyte in the sample is ∼100% converted/transported). Herein, we report on the realization of calibration-free coulometric ISEs based on ultrathin ion-selective membranes, which is demonstrated for the detection of potassium ions (K+). In essence, the K+ transfer at the membrane-sample interface is modulated by the oxidation state of the conducting polymer underlying the membrane. The accumulation/release of K+ to/from the membrane is an absolute process owing to the confinement of the sample to a thin-layer domain (thickness of <100 μm). The capacity of the membrane expressed in charge is fixed to ca. 18 μC, and this dictates the detection of micromolar levels of K+ present in ca. 5 μL sample volume. The system is interrogated with cyclic voltammetry to obtain peaks related to the K+ transfer that can be treated charge-wise. The conceptual and technical innovative steps developed here made the calibration-free detection of K+ possible in artificial and real samples with acceptable accuracy (<10% difference compared with the results obtained from a current-based calibration and ion chromatography). The charge-based analysis does not depend on temperature and appeared to be repetitive, reproducible, and reversible in the concentration range from 1 to 37.5 μM, with an average coulometry efficiency of 96%.

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, underwater monitoring system that incorporates Raman spectroscopy based on a flash lidar. We have visualized underwater oil at a 5 m distance by illuminating the area of around 15 cm diameter with an expanding laser beam at 532 nm and detecting the oil and water Raman images. By calibrating the oil Raman image with the water Raman image, the detection limit of liquid oil thickness has been estimated to be about 0.27 mm. Thus, the proposed technique provides the capability of effectively detecting oil leaks in underwater sea areas.

Abstract
3D laser imaging technology could allow visualizing objects hidden in turbid water. Such a technology mainly works at short distances (<50 m) because of the high attenuation of light in water. Therefore, a significant part of the scattering events from the water column is located out of the optical depth of field (DoF), which could induce optical blur on images. In this study, a model is proposed to represent such an optical blur, based on geometric optics. The model is then implemented in a Monte-Carlo scheme. Blur significantly affects the scattered signal from water before the DoF in monostatic conditions, but has less impact in bi-static conditions. Furthermore, it is shown that blur enables a very large variance reduction of 2D images of objects situated within the DoF. Such an effect increases with the extinction coefficient.

Abstract
Underwater imaging has been present for many decades due to its relevance in vision and navigation systems. In recent years, advances in robotics have led to the availability of autonomous or unmanned underwater vehicles (AUVs, UUVs). Despite the rapid development of new studies and promising algorithms in this field, there is currently a lack of research toward standardized, general-approach proposals. This issue has been stated in the literature as a limiting factor to be addressed in the future. The key starting point of this work is to identify a synergistic effect between professional photography and scientific fields by analyzing image acquisition issues. Subsequently, we discuss underwater image enhancement and quality assessment, image mosaicking and algorithmic concerns as the last processing step. In this line, statistics about 120 AUV articles fro recent decades have been analyzed, with a special focus on state-of-the-art papers from recent years. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify critical issues in autonomous underwater vehicles encompassing the entire process, starting from optical issues in image sensing and ending with some issues related to algorithmic processing. In addition, a global underwater workflow is proposed, extracting future requirements, outcome effects and new perspectives in this context.

Abstract
High-frequency water quality measurements in streams and rivers have expanded in scope and sophistication during the last two decades. Existing technology allows in situ automated measurements of water quality constituents, including both solutes and particulates, at unprecedented frequencies from seconds to subdaily sampling intervals. This detailed chemical information can be combined with measurements of hydrological and biogeochemical processes, bringing new insights into the sources, transport pathways, and transformation processes of solutes and particulates in complex catchments and along the aquatic continuum. Here, we summarize established and emerging high-frequency water quality technologies, outline key high-frequency hydrochemical data sets, and review scientific advances in key focus areas enabled by the rapid development of high-frequency water quality measurements in streams and rivers. Finally, we discuss future directions and challenges for using high-frequency water quality measurements to bridge scientific and management gaps by promoting a holistic understanding of freshwater systems and catchment status, health, and function.

Abstract
Vehicles operating in a water medium sometimes encounter harsh conditions with high turbidity and low scene illumination, making it challenging to obtain reliable target information through optical devices. Although many post-processing solutions were proposed, they are not applicable to continuous vehicle operations. Inspired by the advanced polarimetric hardware technology, a joint fast algorithm was developed in this study to address the above problems. Backscatter attenuation and direct signal attenuation were solved separately by utilizing the revised underwater polarimetric image formation model. A fast local adaptive Wiener filtering method was used to improve the backscatter estimation by reducing the additive noise. Further, the image was recovered using the fast local space average color method. By using a low-pass filter guided by the color constancy theory, the problems of nonuniform illumination caused by artificial light and direct signal attenuation were both addressed. The results of testing on images from laboratory experiments showed improved visibility and realistic chromatic rendition.

Abstract
Underwater object detection is a key technology in the development of intelligent underwater vehicles. Object detection faces unique challenges in underwater applications: blurry underwater images; small and dense targets; and limited computational capacity available on the deployed platforms. To improve the performance of underwater object detection, we proposed a new object detection approach that combines a new detection neural network called TC-YOLO, an image enhancement technique using an adaptive histogram equalization algorithm, and the optimal transport scheme for label assignment. The proposed TC-YOLO network was developed based on YOLOv5s. Transformer self-attention and coordinate attention were adopted in the backbone and neck of the new network, respectively, to enhance feature extraction for underwater objects. The application of optimal transport label assignment enables a significant reduction in the number of fuzzy boxes and improves the utilization of training data. Our tests using the RUIE2020 dataset and ablation experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach performs better than the original YOLOv5s and other similar networks for underwater object detection tasks; moreover, the size and computational cost of the proposed model remain small for underwater mobile applications.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for estimating the beam aperture of the acoustic transducers by using the geometric backscattering model for side-scan sonar systems. The geometric backscattering model is developed to describe the propagation paths of the signal transmitted from the transducers towards the seabed and backscatters to the hydrophones. To evaluate our proposed algorithm, we have developed a side-scan sonar system. The side-scan sonar system uses two transducers, operating on two different frequencies and focusing on two different wave beams, to scan the images of the seabed. The proposed algorithm provides the estimated beam apertures of each transducer. Our obtained results agree quite well with the parameters provided by the manufacturers. Moreover, these results are used to calibrate the scanned images. We provide the scanned sonar 3D images of the Dong Do lakebed, Vietnam, to justify our proposal.

Abstract
The marine environment presents a unique set of challenges for human-robot interaction. Communicating with gestures is a common way for interacting between the diver and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, underwater gesture recognition is a challenging visual task for AUVs due to light refraction and wavelength color attenuation issues. Current gesture recognition methods classify the whole image directly or locate the hand position first and then classify the hand features. Among these purely visual approaches, textual information is largely ignored. This paper proposes a visual-textual model for underwater hand gesture recognition (VT-UHGR). The VT-UHGR model encodes the underwater diver's image as visual features, the category text as textual features, and generates visual-textual features through multimodal interactions. We guide AUVs to use image-text matching for learning and inference. The proposed method achieves better performance than most existing purely visual methods on the dataset CADDY, demonstrating the effectiveness of using textual patterns for underwater gesture recognition.

Abstract
Transparent and robust titanium dioxide (TiO2) coatings were prepared by the facile aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method. The effects of deposition temperature and precursor concentration on the crystal growth and optical properties of TiO2 coating were investigated. It is found that the obtained TiO2 coating has strong adhesion to the substrate, which can effectively avoid mechanical scratches and wear by sharp objects, adhesive tape and steel wool. Besides, in the marine corrosion protection test, both the open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance of TiO2 coating immersed in artificial seawater for different times are greater than those of the bare S420 steel substrate. Particularly, the high-frequency phase angle of the TiO2 coating increases, and the impedance value at low frequency of 0.10 Hz is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the bare S420 substrate. In addition, the significant decrease of corrosion products on the surface further proves that the deposited TiO2 coating exhibits better corrosion inhibition and excellent anticorrosion properties, which is expected in application of the surface coating protection of the marine exploration lens.

Abstract
Recent research on robotic fish mainly focused on the bionic structure design and realizing the movement with smart materials. Although many robotic fish have been proposed, most of these works were oriented toward shallow water environments and are mostly built with purely rigid structures, limiting the mobility and practical usability of robotic fish. Inspired by the stability of the real manta ray, a manta ray robot design is proposed with soft material made flapping wing based on an open-source ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). The flapping wing structure with three different materials mimics the wide pectoral fins of real manta rays, which have bones, muscles, and skin. Furthermore, its modular design makes it easy to install and disassemble. The kinematic and hydrodynamic analysis of the manta ray robot are simulated in this paper. The actual manta ray robot is fabricated and several sets of test are performed in the pool. The robot can swim forward continually and stably with a simple rolling and pitching pattern.

Abstract
Compared with traditional underwater vehicles, bio-inspired fish robots have the advantages of high efficiency, high maneuverability, low noise, and minor fluid disturbance. Therefore, they have gained an increasing research interest, which has led to a great deal of remarkable progress theoretically and practically in recent years. In this review, we first highlight our enhanced scientific understanding of bio-inspired propulsion and sensing underwater and then present the research progress and performance characteristics of different bio-inspired robot fish, classified by the propulsion method. Like the natural fish species they imitate, different types of bionic fish have different morphological structures and distinctive hydrodynamic properties. In addition, we select two pioneering directions about soft robotic control and multi-phase robotics. The hybrid dynamic control of soft robotic systems combines the accuracy of model-based control and the efficiency of model-free control, and is considered the proper way to optimize the classical control model with the intersection of multiple machine learning algorithms. Multi-phase robots provide a broader scope of application compared to ordinary bionic robot fish, with the ability of operating in air or on land outside the fluid. By introducing recent progress in related fields, we summarize the advantages and challenges of soft robotic control and multi-phase robotics, guiding the further development of bionic aquatic robots.
