Applications of cerium-based materials in food monitoring

With the rapid development of society, food safety to public health has been a topic that cannot be ignored. In recent years, lanthanide-based materials are studied to be potential candidates in the detection of food samples. Cerium (Ce)-based materials (such as Ce ions, CeO2, Ce-metal organic framework (Ce-MOF), etc.) have also attracted more attention in food detection by virtue of colorimetric, fluorescence, sensing, and other methods. This is because the mixed valence of Ce (Ce3+ and Ce4+), the formation of oxygen vacancies, and their optical and electrochemical properties. In this review, Ce-based materials will be introduced and discussed in the field of food detection, including biogenesis, construction, catalytic mechanisms, combination, and applications. In addition, the current challenges and future development trend of these Ce-based materials in food safety detection are also proposed and discussed. Therefore, it is meaningful to explore the Ce-based materials for detection of biomarkers in food samples.

Selective Detection of CO Using Proton-Conducting Graphene Oxide Membranes with Pt-Doped SnO2 Electrocatalysts: Mechanistic Study by Operando DRIFTS

To reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, there is a strong need for small, compact gas sensors to detect and monitor CO at ppm concentrations. In this study, we focused on detecting CO with electrochemical sensors based on proton-conducting graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets at room temperature. We found that a Ce-doped GO nanosheet membrane fitted with the sensing electrode composed of Pt (10 wt %)-doped SnO2 nanocrystals exhibits an excellent sensor response to CO at 25 °C. Pt doping of SnO2 nanocrystals has made it possible to detect CO more selectively than H2 and ethanol. The CO detection mechanism is analyzed by operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), Fourier transform infrared gas cell measurements, and comprehensive density functional theory-based calculations. The results revealed that adsorption of CO occurs predominantly on Pt sites, and the adsorbed CO is anodically oxidized at the interface between the sensing electrode and proton-conducting membrane, generating the selective sensor response. The strong adsorption of CO was realized with Pt (10 wt %)-doped SnO2 nanocrystals, as revealed by the DRIFTS analysis and temperature-programed desorption technique.

Low Overpotential Amperometric Sensor Using Yb2O3.CuO@rGO Nanocomposite for Sensitive Detection of Ascorbic Acid in Real Samples

The ultimate objective of this research work is to design a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for the efficient detection of ascorbic acid (AA), a vital antioxidant found in blood serum that may serve as a biomarker for oxidative stress. To achieve this, we utilized a novel Yb₂O₃.CuO@rGO nanocomposite (NC) as the active material to modify the glassy carbon working electrode (GCE). The structural properties and morphological characteristics of the Yb₂O₃.CuO@rGO NC were investigated using various techniques to ensure their suitability for the sensor. The resulting sensor electrode was able to detect a broad range of AA concentrations (0.5-1571 µM) in neutral phosphate buffer solution, with a high sensitivity of 0.4341 µAµM^-1cm^-2 and a reasonable detection limit of 0.062 µM. The sensor's great sensitivity and selectivity allowed it to accurately determine the levels of AA in human blood serum and commercial vitamin C tablets. It demonstrated high levels of reproducibility, repeatability, and stability, making it a reliable and robust sensor for the measurement of AA at low overpotential. Overall, the Yb₂O₃.CuO@rGO/GCE sensor showed great potential in detecting AA from real samples.
