How to Promote Gerotranscendence in Older Adults? A Scoping Review of Interventions

Gerotranscendence is a psychosocial theory that proposes older adults experience a mindset shift in multiple dimensions (cosmic, coherence, solitude), associated with different constructs, such as life satisfaction and well-being. Increasing studies are employing gerotranscendence, but the practical aspects of how gerotranscendence can be developed are still underexplored. This review involved an assessment of the size and scope of the existing literature on interventions related to gerotranscendence and their effect on participants' well-being. Six databases were searched, and eight studies were selected: five were observational, while three were randomized control trials. Findings showed that gerotranscendence can be developed through weekly thematic encounters. Moreover, the interventions examined in the selected studies were described as having positively impacted participants' mental health and life satisfaction. Future studies should explore gerotranscendence interventions using a rigorous methodology and long-term follow-up data to add consistency to these findings.

Facing double jeopardy: Experiences of driving cessation in older adults during COVID-19 pandemic

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 pandemic is a multidimensional phenomenon whose consequences can be detected in various economic, social, cultural, and political areas. Driving cessation in older adults is one of the areas affected by the social consequences of this crisis. This study aimed to explain the concept of facing the double jeopardy of the COVID-19 pandemic and driving cessation in older adults.

METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted using a thematic analysis approach. Fifteen older adults aged 60 years and above who lived in a community-based setting of Shiraz, Iran were selected based on purposive sampling. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews.

RESULTS

The findings indicated two themes, namely dualization of common challenges and fitness with limitations, and nine sub-themes, which showed the experiences of older adults regarding the main theme of facing the double jeopardy of the COVID-19 pandemic and driving cessation.

DISCUSSION

Facing the double jeopardy created unique challenges for older adults, as the combined adverse effects of the two sources simultaneously put them at a greater risk. This double jeopardy endangered the health of older adults in various dimensions. This can be the beginning of a new era in older adults' life and care. In this context, application of telecommunication technology and home-based applications increases the flexibility of older adults as well as their ability to cope with stress to meet their mental, social, and physical health needs.

Oxidative stress, antioxidants, hormesis and calorie restriction: The current perspective in the biology of aging

Aging, in a large measure, has long been defined as the resultant of oxidative stress acting on the cells. The cellular machinery eventually malfunctions at the basic level by the damage from the processes of oxidation and the system starts slowing down because of intrinsic eroding. To understand the initial destruction at the cellular level spreading outward to affect tissues, organs and the organism, the relationship between molecular damage and oxidative stress is required to understand. Retarding the aging process is a matter of cumulatively decreasing the rate of oxidative damage to the cellular machinery. Along with the genetic reasons, the decrease of oxidative stress is somehow a matter of lifestyle and importantly of diet. In the current review, the theories of aging and the understanding of various levels of molecular damage by oxidative stress have been emphasized. A broader understanding of mechanisms of aging have been elaborated in terms of effects of oxidative at molecular, mitochondrial, cellular and organ levels. The antioxidants supplementation, hormesis and calorie restriction as the prominent anti-aging strategies have also been discussed. The relevance and the efficacy of the antiaging strategies at system level have also been presented.

Schizophrenia Mortality: Barriers to Progress

Individuals with schizophrenia die, on average, 20 years before their peers, with 'natural causes' accounting for 80% of premature deaths. The aim of this narrative review is to address this phenomenon from the perspective of known factors that contribute to long life. The relevant literature from the last decade was searched in PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Four factors have been shown to be common to centarians, people who live to be a hundred: genes, life style behaviors that favor a healthy heart, social support, and a subjective purpose in life. The latter three factors are potentially modifiable but, in the context of schizophrenia, there are barriers to change, namely poverty, illness symptoms, stress, stigma, and side effects of antipsychotic medication. Barriers to change need to be addressed before substantial progress can be made in increasing the health and mortality risk of people with schizophrenia.
