Expanding the Scope of the Bicycle Level-of-Service Concept: A Review of the Literature

A GIS-Based Method of the Assessment of Spatial Integration of Bike-Sharing Stations

The paper presents a method of the assessment of spatial integration of bike-sharing stations in urban agglomerations based on GIS tools for analyses. The method uses four sub-models: system of bike-sharing stations, road and street network, demand for bike-sharing ridership, bike-sharing ridership routing, and value matrix of spatial integration measures. The presented method allows the identification of different categories of segments of the road and street network used for bike travels and enables the identification of the set of segments that should be upgraded into bike-friendly infrastructure offering bike lanes or cycle paths in order to ensure the appropriate level of spatial integration of bike-sharing stations. The possibility of the application of the method has been studied on the example of the existing bike-sharing system in Katowice, a city in southern Poland. The research presented in the paper has been conducted based on data on bike rentals and bike trips from eight months of 2018. Selected results of the spatial integration assessment of bike-sharing stations, which may be useful for making investment decisions in the bike-sharing system development, are presented.

Electric bike (non)users' health and comfort concerns pre and peri a world pandemic (COVID-19): A qualitative study

INTRODUCTION

The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic affects different domains of society, including the transport system. Due to the impacts of social distancing, research concerning electric bike (e-bike) applications and non(user) health and comfort concerns is needed. This research aims to understand the health and comfort concerns of e-bike (non)users in both pre (PR) and peri (PE) pandemic situations and explore how the PE situation triggers (non)users to use e-bikes.

METHODS

An interpretive description qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews was used to gather the empirical material for this research.

RESULTS

Twenty-three (non)user participants were interviewed in the PR situation, and 12 of these participants were interviewed again in the PE situation. The comfort provided by the e-bike did not outweigh its cost as a factor for nonusers considering investing in the e-bikes in the PR situation. However, nonusers acknowledged that e-bikes can serve as substitutes for public transport by eliminating social interactions and consequently potential health concerns, in addition to providing comfortable mobility. E-bike users were in agreement concerning physical activity and the health benefits of using e-bikes in the PR situation. Their opinions differed slightly, as women placed less emphasis on the physical activity provided by e-bike use. However, gender opinions converged regarding health concerns about using public transport in PE situations. Infrastructure facilities and e-bike performance are evident as users' comfort concerns in the PE situation.

CONCLUSION

The results highlight the role of the e-bike in PE situations as a reliable transport mode and suggest that there is considerable potential for e-bikes as substitutes for public transport in the post-pandemic situation. The findings are applicable to e-bike level-of-service studies in order to provide an overview of the user's experience of comfort.

The Munich Bikeability Index: A Practical Approach for Measuring Urban Bikeability

This research addresses the phenomenon of varying bicycle friendliness in urban areas and considers which elements are necessary to design a city in a bike-friendly manner. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of the term bikeability, in relation to the established term walkability, and methods to create models that measure the degree of bikeability in urban areas. We explain different established models and compare their computational bases. The focus of this paper is to define a computational methodology built within a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a subsequent evaluation based on an investigation area in Munich, Germany. We introduce a bikeability index for specific investigation areas and geovisualize four selected factors of this index. The resulting map views show the road segments of the traffic network where the conditions for biking are adequate, but also those segments which need to be improved.

Pedestrians-Cyclists Shared Spaces Level of Service: Comparison of Methodologies and Critical Discussion

Pedestrians–cyclists shared spaces, sidewalks and streets are now a commonly implemented urban design solution in many cities, due to the willingness to promote sustainable mobility and the non-availability of public space. The proper design and management of these infrastructures requires an accurate evaluation of their performance. The most dominant evaluation metric is the level of service (LOS) and various methodologies have been proposed in the literature for its assessment in infrastructures that are being used by pedestrians, cyclists or by both of these two types of users. The present paper gathers and presents various methodologies, and it applies some of them on two pedestrians-cyclists shared spaces in a medium-sized city in Greece. The outcomes of the methodologies are being compared both among themselves and in relation to the opinions of the users, who participated in a questionnaire survey. The review of the literature, along with the application of some of the methodologies, leads to a fruitful discussion, which sets the groundwork for future research in the field of LOS and it also assists practitioners in selecting the appropriate methodologies for the assessment of pedestrian–cyclists shared spaces.

Evaluation Model for the Level of Service of Shared-Use Paths Based on Traffic Conflicts

As a product of urban motorized traffic, sharing roads between pedestrians and non-motor vehicles has been widely used in the world. In order to improve the service quality of slow traffic, it is necessary to evaluate the service level of the shared-use path to determine whether the road is suitable for setting up shared forms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide an analytical framework to quantify and accurately express the service level of shared-use paths. Considering the direct impact of traffic conflicts on service quality, fuzzy clustering analysis is used to analyze traffic conflicts. Then, the corresponding relationship between traffic conflict events and service levels is established, and the classification criteria of the service levels at all levels and the corresponding range of conflict events are determined. By judging the interval in which the number of conflict events belongs, we can determine the service level of the shared-use path, and then determine whether the slow-moving road is suitable for sharing between pedestrians and non-motor vehicles. The research results can provide a reference for traffic management departments to determine the service level and applicability of shared roads.
