Evaluating the Eco-Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants: Comparison of Optimistic and Pessimistic Approaches

Wastewater treatment, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions: An operational approach to comparing Barcelona and Mexico City

This study delves into the critical nexus between wastewater treatment, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Wastewater treatment is a linchpin of sustainable development, yet its energy-intensive processes contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The research focuses on wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Mexico City (CDMX) and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), exploring the disparities between a developed country and a developing country. The study examines how factors such as water treatment technologies and electricity sources influence carbon emissions. The AMB exhibits superior performance by treating all wastewater, cogenerating energy from the biomass contained in the wastewater and generating 10% fewer emissions, in stark contrast to CDMX, which does not capture the CH4 produced during water treatment, on top of only treating the water of 14% of the city's agglomeration. It underscores the critical implications of WWTP efficiency on climate change and progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goals. Given the limited attention to the Global South, this research serves as a vital contribution to the discourse on sustainability and development.

Understanding water-energy nexus in drinking water provision: An eco-efficiency assessment of water companies

Understanding water-energy nexus in the provision of drinking water services is a challenge which has outstanding relevance in the current climatic emergency. Environmental efficiency and eco-efficiency assessment of water companies are two useful tools to address this challenge. In this study, we estimated hyperbolic and enhanced hyperbolic distance functions to compute the potential reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy costs in the provision of drinking water. The empirical application focused on the English and Welsh water companies over 2011-2019. Average environmental efficiency and eco-efficiency scores were 0.920 and 0.962, respectively which indicates that water companies performed well but there is room for improvement. Moreover, due to the economies of scale, the cost of reducing GHG emissions was higher for water and sewerage companies than for water only companies. The results and conclusions of this study allow better understanding of the relationship between the provision of drinking water, energy costs and GHG emissions.

Financial and Economic Investment Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Plant

Improved Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) analysis requires a broader analytical framework, in order to perceive each project individually from the perspective of potentially measurable and significant effects on the environment and society as a whole. The main goal of our paper is to assess the financial and economic justification for variant V3 (as the most technically optimal) of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) construction project in Nov Dojran, North Macedonia, with the purpose of advancing municipal infrastructure and environmental benefits from improved water treatment. Based on the economic analysis conducted, we conclude that the investment in the WWTP project is justified, because the economic internal rate of return is higher than the opportunity cost of capital (EIRR = 16.38%), the economic net present value is higher than 0, and EBCR (benefit-cost ratio) is greater than 1 (EBCR = 2.11). The highest environmental benefit of 49.2% in total environmental benefits is associated with nitrogen, while phosphorus is the next pollutant in the structure of environmental benefits at 46.1%. The environmental benefits of removing biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) are significantly less important, despite the removal of significant amounts of these pollutants during treatment. The situation is similar with suspended particles.

Wastewater Refinery: Producing Multiple Valuable Outputs from Wastewater

A wastewater refinery is a multifunctional solution that combines different technologies and processing schemes to recover a spectrum of valuable materials from municipal or industrial wastewater. The concept of wastewater refinery introduces a new perspective on wastewater treatment and management. It aims at making the most of wastewater constituents by co-producing different worthful outputs, such as water, energy, nitrogen, sulfide, and phosphorous. This can turn the treatment of wastewater from a major cost into a source of profit. The wastewater refinery approach is well aligned with the concept of the circular economy. A case study on Qatar’s wastewater revealed the potential recovery of significant quantities of valuable resources embodied in the country’s wastewater. Valorization of organic constituents and the recovery of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfide should be given priority. To facilitate the adoption of the wastewater refinery concept, research is required to explore technical and economic bottlenecks.
