Removal of Antimony(V) from Drinking Water Using nZVI/AC: Optimization of Batch and Fix Bed Conditions

Arsenic and antimony desorption in water treatment processes: Scaling up challenges with emerging adsorbents

The metalloids arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) belong to the pnictogen group of the periodic table; they share many characteristics, including their toxic and carcinogenic properties; and rank as high-priority pollutants in the United States and the European Union. Adsorption is one of the most effective techniques for removing both elements and desorption, for further reuse, is a part of the process to make adsorption more sustainable and feasible. This review presents the current state of knowledge on arsenic and antimony desorption from exhausted adsorbents previously used in water treatment, that has been reported in the literature. The application of different types of eluents to desorb As and Sb and their desorption performance are described. The regeneration of saturated adsorbents and adsorbate recovery techniques are outlined, including the fate of spent media and possible alternatives for waste disposal of exhausted materials. Future research directions are discussed, as well as current issues including the lack of environmental impact analysis of emerging adsorbents.

Adsorption and immobilization performance of pine-cone pristine and engineered biochars for antimony in aqueous solution and military shooting range soil: An integrated novel approach

Antimony (Sb-V), a carcinogenic metalloid, is becoming prevalent in water and soil due to anthropogenic activities. Biochar could be an effective remedy for Sb(V)-contaminated water and soil. In this study, we used pristine and engineered pinecone-derived biochar as an innovative approach for treating Sb(V)-contaminated water and shooting range soil. Biochar was produced from pine-cone waste (pristine biochar) and enriched with Fe and Al salts via saturation (engineered biochar). Adsorption tests in water revealed that iron-modified biochar showed higher adsorption capacity (8.68 mg g^-1) than that of the pristine biochar (2.49 mg g^-1) and aluminum-modified biochar (3.40 mg g^-1). Isotherm and kinetic modeling of the adsorption data suggested that the adsorption process varied from monolayer to multilayer, with chemisorption as the dominant interaction mechanism between Sb(V) and the biochars. The post-adsorption study of iron-modified biochar by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) further supported the chemical bonding and outer-sphere complexation of Sb(V) with Fe, N-H, O-H, C-O and CC components. The pristine and iron-modified biochars also successfully immobilized Sb(V) in a shooting range soil, more so in the latter. Subsequent sequential extractions and post-analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and elemental dot mapping revealed that Sb in the treated soil transformed to a more stable form. It was concluded that iron-modified biochar could act as an efficient material for the adsorption and immobilization of Sb(V) in water and soil, respectively.

Study on the Arsenate Removal from Raw As(V)-Rich Wastewater Using Zero-Valent Iron

Due to the large volumes of solid waste produced by the traditional arsenic-rich lime iron salt precipitation method treatment produced during wet-smelting by precious metal workshops, raw As(V)-rich wastewater from a domestic metallurgical enterprise was chosen as the research object. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) was used to remove arsenate (As(V)) from raw wastewater. Factors affecting the adsorption of As(V), such as the ZVI size and adsorption time, were investigated. The As(V) removal percentage was >98.2% when using 40, 100, 250, or 300 mesh ZVI in a 2.8 mg·L−1 As(V) solution at pH 7, with an iron mass–wastewater ratio of 5 g/100 mL, and 12 h reaction time. The As(V) removal percentage was >86.5% when using 40 mesh ZVI after 50 min of reaction. A comprehensive evaluation was performed on the effects of factors such as cost and water head loss. Here, 40 mesh ZVI was used for column-based separation, in which the mass of solid waste was very small. Column experiments indicated that the adsorbent more efficiently eliminated arsenate in comparison to the earlier reported adsorbents. High bed volumes (BV) of 3200 BV, 6300 BV, and 8400 BV up to a breakthrough concentration of 100 μg·L−1 were achieved for arsenate removal in the presence of 2.8 mg·L−1 of arsenic. The empty bed contact times (EBCTs) were 2.6 min, 5.1 min, and 9.8 min, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of other pollutants such as Cu2+, Zn2+, F−, Cd2+, Cr6+, Pb2+, and F- met the national discharge standard. The elimination of As(V) and other heavy metals from solutions employing ZVI is efficient, cheap, and produces no secondary environmental pollution, making it an ideal candidate for heavy metal removal from wastewater.
