Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most toxic mycotoxin commonly found in the environment. Finding efficient and environmentally friendly ways to remove AFB1 is critical. In this study, Aspergillus luchuensis YZ-1 demonstrated a potent ability to adsorb AFB1 for the first time, and the binding of AFB1 to YZ-1 is highly stable. Spores exhibited higher adsorption efficiency than mycelia, adsorbing approximately 95 % of AFB1 within 15 min. The spores were comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Various adsorption kinetic models (pseudo-first and pseudo-second order), adsorption isotherm models (Freundlich and Langmuir), Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to investigate the adsorption properties and mechanisms. The adsorption capacity of spores decreased with heating, urea, and SDS treatments, indicating that spore proteins may be the primary substance for AFB1 adsorption. Subsequent experiments showed that proteins with molecular weights greater than 50 kDa played a key role in the adsorption. Additionally, the spores possess excellent storage properties and are valuable for adsorbing AFB1 from vegetable oils. Therefore, the YZ-1 spores hold promise for development into a novel biosorbent for AFB1 removal.

Abstract
The degradation of aflatoxins using nonpathogenic microbes and their enzymes is emerging as a safe and economical alternative to chemical and physical methods for the detoxification of aflatoxins in food and feeds. Many bacteria and fungi have been identified as aflatoxin degraders. This review is focused on the chemical identification of microbial degradation products and their degradation pathways. The microbial degradations of aflatoxins are initiated by oxidation, hydroxylation, reduction, or elimination reactions mostly catalyzed by various enzymes belonging to the classes of laccase, reductases, and peroxidases. The resulting products with lesser chemical stability further undergo various reactions to form low molecular weight products. Studies on the chemical and biological nature of degraded products of aflatoxins are necessary to ensure the safety of the decontamination process. This review indicated the need for an integrated approach including decontamination studies using culture media and food matrices, proper identification and toxicity profiling of degraded products of aflatoxins, and interactions of microbes and the degradation products with food matrices for developing practical and effective microbial detoxification process.

Abstract
Robinia pseudoacacia flower is a natural product with many biological activities, including antioxidation. To further develop its antioxidation, the extract was fermented by Aspergillus niger FFCC 3112 in the medium with carbon to nitrogen ratio of 1.4:1 and initial pH of 4.2 for 3.5 days to form the best antioxidant activity of the fermentation product by strain screening, single factor optimization, and response surface methodology. Further analysis, isolation and activity determination showed that a main chemical component, kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-galactopyranosyl-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, in the extract was completely hydrolyzed to kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol with better antioxidant activity through biotransformation, which was the basis for improving the antioxidant activity of fermentation products. Moreover, the mechanism of antioxidant and the contribution of phenolic hydroxyl groups were investigated by density functional theory. The result indicated that the antioxidant capacity of kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol increased with the increase of solvent polarity. In high-polarity solvents, they mainly scavenge free radicals through single electron transfer followed by proton transfer.

Abstract
The present work was carried out to study the ability of five probiotics on the in vitro degradation of Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1). The best results of in vitro were tested on the detoxification of AFB1 in rabbits. A total of 40 growing New Zealand White (NZW) male rabbits were assigned to five experimental groups. Animals were fed the following diets: basal diet (control), basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1, basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1. + probiotic 3 (0.5 g/kg diet), basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1 + ajowan (0.5 g/kg diet), and basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1 + probiotic 3 (0.5 g/kg diet) + ajowan (0.5 g/kg diet). Live body weight significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet compared to the control rabbits. All additives improved (P < 0.05) the live body weight. The best improvement occurred with probiotics + ajowan. The addition of probiotics increased (P < 0.05) daily body weight gain in all weeks except the first week. Adding ajowan or ajowan + probiotic led to a significant (P < 0.05) increase in live body weight gain and feed intake compared to rabbits fed AFB1 alone. The digestion coefficients of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), nitrogen-free extract (NFE), and digestible crude protein (DCP) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet. All additives improved (P < 0.05) the digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, EE, CF, NFE, and total digested nutrients (TDN)%. The best improvement occurred with probiotics + ajowan. Concentrations of serum total protein, albumin and globulin significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet compared with the control rabbits. In conclusion, the addition of probiotic 3 (AVI-5-BAC) + ajowan could be recommended to eliminate the toxicity of AFB1 and improve growth performance criteria in rabbits.

Abstract
Background and Aim Market demand for safe feed and food supply and consumer preferences for safe and healthy products are increasing. Control measures to counter threats to the feed supply need to be implemented as early as possible to prevent economic losses. Mycotoxins produced by certain groups of fungi are a problem that can disrupt the feed supply or pose a threat to the health of animals and humans. Biological control to detoxify contaminated feed ingredients can be carried out on a large scale economically. For example, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can act as biological agents for eliminating mycotoxins. This study aimed to clarify the value of screening LAB to inhibit Aspergillus flavus growth and detoxify aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Materials and Methods In this study, using a completely randomized design with three replications, five isolates of LAB (LA.1, LA.6, LA.8, LA.12, and LA.22) along with their supernatants were tested qualitatively and quantitatively for their ability to counter mycotoxins using A. flavus and corn kernels. The isolates with the best activity were identified by sequencing 16S rDNA. Results The results showed that the five LAB isolates can inhibit the growth of A. flavus and detoxify AFB1. Among these isolates, LA.12 showed the best performance, followed by LA.22, LA.8, LA.6, and then LA.1. The sequencing results confirmed that LA.12 was Lactobacillus harbinensis strain 487. Conclusion All of the isolates in this study have the potential as biological agents for detoxifying AFB1, with isolate LA.12 appearing to be the most promising biodetoxification agent for feed (AFB1 in corn) based on its ability to inhibit pathogenic fungi.

Abstract
In our previous work, a recombinant aflatoxin-degrading enzyme derived from Myxococcus fulvus (MADE) was reported. However, the low thermal stability of the enzyme had limitations for its use in industrial applications. In this study, we obtained an improved variant of recombinant MADE (rMADE) with enhanced thermostability and catalytic activity using error-prone PCR. Firstly, we constructed a mutant library containing over 5000 individual mutants. Three mutants with T50 values higher than the wild-type rMADE by 16.5 °C (rMADE-1124), 6.5 °C (rMADE-1795), and 9.8 °C (rMADE-2848) were screened by a high-throughput screening method. Additionally, the catalytic activity of rMADE-1795 and rMADE-2848 was improved by 81.5% and 67.7%, respectively, compared to the wild-type. Moreover, structural analysis revealed that replacement of acidic amino acids with basic amino acids by a mutation (D114H) in rMADE-2848 increased the polar interactions with surrounding residues and resulted in a threefold increase in the t1/2 value of the enzyme and made it more thermaltolerate. KEY POINTS: • Mutant libraries construction of a new aflatoxins degrading enzyme by error-prone PCR. • D114H/N295D mutant improved enzyme activity and thermostability. • The first reported enhanced thermostability of aflatoxins degrading enzyme better for its application.

Abstract
Aflatoxins, which are produced mainly by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, are recognized as the most toxic mycotoxins, which are strongly carcinogenic and pose a serious threat to human and animal health. Therefore, strategies to degrade or eliminate aflatoxins in agro-products are urgently needed. We investigated 65 Trichoderma isolates belonging to 23 species for their aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-degrading capabilities. Trichoderma reesei CGMCC3.5218 had the best performance, and degraded 100% of 50 ng/kg AFB1 within 3 days and 87.6% of 10 μg/kg AFB1 within 5 days in a liquid-medium system. CGMCC3.5218 degraded more than 85.0% of total aflatoxins (aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2) at 108.2–2323.5 ng/kg in artificially and naturally contaminated peanut, maize, and feed within 7 days. Box–Behnken design and response surface methodology showed that the optimal degradation conditions for CGMCC3.5218 were pH 6.7 and 31.3°C for 5.1 days in liquid medium. Possible functional detoxification components were analyzed, indicating that the culture supernatant of CGMCC3.5218 could efficiently degrade AFB1 (500 ng/kg) with a ratio of 91.8%, compared with 19.5 and 8.9% by intracellular components and mycelial adsorption, respectively. The aflatoxin-degrading activity of the fermentation supernatant was sensitive to proteinase K and proteinase K plus sodium dodecyl sulfonate, but was stable at high temperatures, suggesting that thermostable enzymes or proteins in the fermentation supernatant played a major role in AFB1 degradation. Furthermore, toxicological experiments by a micronucleus assay in mouse bone marrow erythrocytes and by intraperitoneal injection and skin irritation tests in mice proved that the degradation products by CGMCC3.5218 were nontoxic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study on Trichoderma aflatoxin detoxification, and the candidate strain T. reesei CGMCC3.5218 has high efficient and environment-friendly characteristics, and qualifies as a potential biological detoxifier for application in aflatoxin removal from contaminated feeds.

Abstract
Yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is a supplementary protein source for food and feed and represents a promising solution to manage grain contaminated with Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). In this study, AFB1 present in different concentrations in wheat bran was treated and removed via bioconversion by yellow mealworm of different instars, with emphasis on the bioconversion performance and metabolism of AFB1. Upon application of wheat bran spiked with 100 μg/kg AFB1 to 5th-6th instar yellow mealworms, the conversion rate of AFB1 was up to 87.85 %. Low level of AFB1 (< 2 μg/kg) was accumulated in the larval bodies, and the survival rate, development and nutrition contents of yellow mealworm were not significantly affected. It was revealed that 1 kg of wheat bran contaminated with AFB1 increased the weight of yellow mealworms from 138 g to 469 g, containing approximately 103 g of protein. The bioconversion of AFB1 by yellow mealworms led to generation of 13 metabolites in the frass and 3 metabolites in the larvae. AFB1 was detoxicated and removed via phase I metabolism comprising reduction, dehydrogenation, hydration, demethylation, hydroxylation, decarbonylation and ketoreduction, followed by phase II metabolism involving conjugation of amino acid, glucoside and glutathione (GSH). The toxicity of AFB1 metabolites was deemed lower than that of AFB1 according to their structures. This study provides a sustainable approach and theoretical foundation on using yellow mealworms for cleaner grain contamination management and valuable larval protein production via bioconversion of food and feed contaminated by AFB1.

Abstract
Microbial degradation is considered as an attractive method to eliminate exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the most toxic mycotoxin that causes great economic losses and brings a serious threat to human and animal health, in food and feed. In this study, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens WF2020, isolated from naturally fermented pickles, could effectively degrade AFB1 ranging from 1 to 8 μg/ml, and the optimum temperature and pH value were 37–45°C and 8.0, respectively. Moreover, B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 was considered to be a potential probiotic due to the synthesis of active compounds, absence of virulence genes, susceptibility to various antibiotics, and enhanced lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans. Extracellular enzymes or proteins played a major role in AFB1 degradation mediated by B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 into metabolites with low or no mutagenicity and toxicity to C. elegans. AFB1 degradation by the cell-free supernatant was stable up to 70°C, with an optimal pH of 8.0, and the cell-free supernatant could still degrade AFB1 by 37.16% after boiling for 20 min. Furthermore, B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 caused a slight defect in fungal growth and completely inhibited AFB1 production when co-incubated with Aspergillus flavus. Additionally, B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 suppressed the expression of 10 aflatoxin pathway genes and 2 transcription factors (alfR and alfS), suggesting that B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 might inhibit AFB1 synthesis in A. flavus. These results indicate that B. amyloliquefaciens WF2020 and/or its extracellular enzymes or proteins have a promising potential to be applied in protecting food and feed from AFB1 contamination.

Abstract
AbstractMycotoxins are generally found in food, feed, dairy products, and beverages, subsequently presenting serious human and animal health problems. Not surprisingly, mycotoxin contamination has been a worldwide concern for many research studies. In this regard, many biological, chemical, and physical approaches were investigated to reduce and/or remove contamination from food and feed products. Biological detoxification processes seem to be the most promising approaches for mycotoxins removal from food. The current review details the newest progress in biological detoxification (adsorption and metabolization) through microorganisms, their biofilms, and enzymatic degradation, finally describing the detoxification mechanism of many mycotoxins by some microorganisms. This review also reports the possible usage of microorganisms as mycotoxins’ binders in various food commodities, which may help produce mycotoxins-free food and feed.

Abstract
After the co-culture of Aspergillus niger and Pleurotus ostreatus, the obtained extracellular crude enzymes solution was employed to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) degradation. The maximum AFB1 degradation with co-culture reached 93.4%, which increased by 65.9% and 37.6%, respectively, compared with those of the mono-culture of Pleurotus ostreatus and Aspergillus niger. The molecular weight of the key detoxifying enzymes isolated by ultrafiltration was 58 and 63 kDa by SDS-PAGE analysis. The purified detoxifying enzymes had a high detoxification effect on AFB1 with the degradation rate of 94.7%. It was found that the co-culture of Pleurotus ostreatus and Aspergillus niger promoted the production of 58 and 63 kDa detoxifying enzymes to enhance the AFB1 degradation. The chemical structure of major degradation products of AFB1 by the mixed cultures were preliminarily identified by LC-Triple TOF MS. Two pathways of AFB1 degradation were inferred with the high potential of fungal co-cultivations for AFB1 detoxification applications.

Abstract
Silage, an important forage feed, contains hazardous mycotoxins due to spoilage caused by unreasonable management. Deteriorated silage becomes a mycotoxin source and threatens human health and the eco-environment. Recycling deteriorated silage and exploiting beneficial substances would be profitable and environmentally friendly. Squalene [60.3-73.9 mg/kg fresh matter (FM)] and 6 types of mycotoxins (4.56-10,080 ug/kg FM) were found in deteriorated silages. To clarify the source and synthesis mechanism of squalene, alfalfa was ensiled at low temperature (LT, 3-20 ℃), 25 ℃ (T25), 30 ℃ (T30) or 35 ℃ (T35) for 10, 40 and 70 d. The highest squalene was detected when alfalfa ensiled for 40 d (P = 0.033) or ensiled at LT and T30 (P < 0.001). Squalene source was traced as lactic acid bacteria (LAB) using next-generation sequencing. Multiple linear regression models inferred that squalene synthase of LAB positively contributed to the squalene synthesis but was negatively adjusted by ammonia-N during ensiling. Two promising squalene-producing LAB strains were screened from alfalfa silage, which fermented deteriorated silage to enhanced squalene yield (190~279 mg/L) with low cost and high mycotoxin removal ratios (up to 85.5%). Therefore, the environmentally friendly strategy of recycling deteriorated silage to produce beneficial squalene was created.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus section Flavi that contaminates a wide variety of food and feed products and is responsible for serious health and economic consequences. Fermented foods are prepared with a wide variety of substrates over a long fermentation time and are thus vulnerable to contamination by aflatoxin-producing fungi, leading to the production of aflatoxin B1. The mitigation and control of aflatoxin is currently a prime focus for developing safe aflatoxin-free food. This review summarizes the role of major aflatoxin-degrading enzymes such as laccase, peroxidase, and lactonase, and microorganisms in the context of their application in food. A putative mechanism of enzyme-mediated aflatoxin degradation and toxicity evaluation of the degraded products are also extensively discussed to evaluate the safety of degradation processes for food applications. The review also describes aflatoxin-degrading microorganisms isolated from fermented products and investigates their applicability in food as aflatoxin preventing agents. Furthermore, a summary of recent technological advancements in protein engineering, nanozymes, in silico and statistical optimization approaches are explored to improve the industrial applicability of aflatoxin-degrading enzymes.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi that colonise various crops around the world and cause major damage to the agro-industrial sector on a global scale. Considering the estimative of population growth in the next decades, it is of fundamental importance the implementation of practices that help prevent the economics and social impacts of aflatoxin contamination. Even though various approaches have been developed – including physical, chemical and biological approaches – there is not yet one that strikes a balance in terms of safety, food quality and cost, especially when considering large scale application. In this review, we present a compilation of advantages and disadvantages of different strategies for prevention and reduction of aflatoxin contamination. Biological approaches represent the trend in innovations mainly due to their specificity and versatility, since it is possible to consider the utilisation of whole microorganisms, culture supernatants, purified enzymes or even genetic engineering. However, challenges related to improvement of the efficiency of such methods and ensuring safety of treated foods still need to be overcome.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most harmful mycotoxin produced by filamentous fungi and presents a serious threat to human and animal health. Therefore, it is essential to protect humans and animals from AFB1-induced acute and chronic toxicity. In this study, Pseudomonas strain m29 having a high efficiency of AFB1 transformation was isolated from soil. The transformation ratio by m29 was more than 97% within 24 h, and the optimum temperature for transformation was 37°C. Moreover, the AFB1 transforming activity was mainly attributed to the cell-free supernatant of strain m29. The metabolite that plays a crucial role in AFB1 transformation is likely 1,2-dimethylhydrazine or 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, as identified by GC-MS and LC-MS analysis. AFB1 was transformed into a product with molecular formula C17H14O7. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of non-enzymatic AFB1 transformation by bacteria. Importantly, this AFB1 transformation mechanism could be universal to various microorganisms.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 is the most toxic mycotoxin and has strong carcinogenicity. In this study, coumarin was employed as the sole carbon source to isolate the microorganisms that had AFB1 detoxification activity. Among106 strains isolated from fermented foods, one potential strain was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum based on 16S rDNA sequence. Removal ratio of AFB1 was 89.5%, inhibitory ratio to A. flavus growth was 42.8% and inhibitory ratio to A. flavus spores growth was as high as 100%. Coumarin utilization indicated that the AFB1 could be decomposed by the strain. The strong antifungal ability against A. flavus growth and spores growth revealed that AFB1 secretion could be highly inhibited by the strain. In addition, High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis indicated that fermentation supernatant of the strain could degrade AFB1. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy indicated that the strain had a strong resistance to AFB1 and had ability to bind AFB1 on the strain surface. Possible detoxification pathway to AFB1 was proposed. Therefore, the strain with high antifungal, antimycotoxigenic abilities might have great potential and immense value in detoxifying AFB1. The use of the strain might be a promising biocontrol strategy to detoxify AFB1.

Abstract
Bacillus sp. H16v8 and Bacillus sp. HGD9229 were identified as Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) degrader in nutrient broth after a 12 h incubation at 37 °C. The degradation efficiency of the two-strain supernatant on 100 μg/L AFB1 was higher than the bacterial cells and cell lysate. Moreover, degradations of AFB1 were strongly affected by the metal ions in which Cu2+ stimulated the degradation and Zn2+ inhibited the degradation. The extracellular detoxifying enzymes produced by co-cultivation of two strains were isolated and purified by ultrafiltration. The molecular weight range of the detoxifying enzymes was 20-25 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The co-culture of two strains improved the total cell growth with the enhancement of the total protein content and detoxifying enzyme production. The degradation efficiency of the supernatant from mixed cultures increased by 87.7% and 55.3% compared to Bacillus sp. H16v8 and HGD9229, individually. Moreover, after the degradation of AFB1, the four products of the lower toxicity were identified by LC-Triple TOF-MS with the two proposed hypothetical degradation pathways.

Abstract
A tetracycline degrading bacterial strains was characterized from the municipal sludge and detected its ability to produce manganese peroxidase. The molecular weight of manganese peroxidase was determined as 46 kDa after Biogel P-100 gel filtration column chromatography purification. Maximum tetracycline degradation was observed with the manganese peroxidase from the strain Bacillus velezensis Al-Dhabi 140 and the optimum degradation process was studied. Optimization revealed the maximum removal efficacy was obtained as 87 mg/L at initial tetracycline concentration 143.75 mg/L, pH 6.94 and 8.04% inoculum. Consequently, fibrous bed reactor containing the culture of B. velezensis Al-Dhabi 140 in fibrous matrix was formed to transform tetracycline in synthetic wastewater. The transformed product of tetracycline from the fibrous bed reactor was evident by the activity of ligninolytic enzymes produced by B. velezensis Al-Dhabi 140 in reactor. The decreased level of antibacterial potency was obtained after 10 days. The zone of inhibition was 24 ± 1 mm after 1 day and it decreased as 9 ± 1 mm after 10 days. Based on the findings, fibrous bed B. velezensis Al-Dhabi 140 could be an efficient strain for tetracycline removal from artificial wastewater, even from natural wastewater.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are carcinogenic compounds produced by certain Aspergillus spp and naturally contaminate poultry rations. Exposure to low levels of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in poultry feeds is the second most threatening issue facing the poultry industry in Egypt; it can cause a reduction in growth, egg production, and compromised immune functions, resulting in significant economic loss. Hence, a safe, effective and eco-friendly detoxification method is strongly required. Biological decontamination is a promising approach to reduce aflatoxin levels within threshold limits. This study explores the biodegradation capacity of bacteria isolated from the moldy feed, soil and poultry feces in various poultry farms against AFB1 (100 ppb), G1 (100 ppb), B2 (30 ppb), G2 (30 ppb). Sixty-five bacterial isolates were initially screened using coumarin media with a concentration of (0.01%-0.5%) coumarin. Only one soil isolate (SZ1) grew at the highest concentration (0.5%). Coumarin and Aflatoxin degradation rates of ten promising isolates were measured using spectrophotometry and HPLC. Six isolates reduced AFG1 by more than 90% in the liquid medium, five reduced AFB2 while only four did the same with AFB1& AFG2. Impressively, isolate SZ1 (identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens) exhibited the best degradation capacity to both coumarin and aflatoxin with 100% degradation of AFG1 and 99% degradation of AFB1, AFB2 and AFG2. Biochemical and molecular identification of the ten isolates revealed that they belong to four genera; Bacillus (6), Pseudomonas (2), Enterococcus (1) and Stenotrophomonas (1). Factors affecting Pseudomonas fluorescens SZ1 degradation activity was further investigated. Optimum temperature, time and pH for maximum aflatoxin degradation were at 37 °C, 72 h and 7, respectively. Treatment with proteinase K reduced the degradation activity of G1 (31% ± 1.438), B1 (42% ± 1.438), G2 (19% ± 1.097), and B2 (25% ± 1.732), suggesting that the effective component in aflatoxin degradation may be protein in nature. Our study suggests the biocontrol potential of several different species isolated from poultry farms; B. haynesii, B. licheniformis, B. tequilensis, B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Enterococcus casseliflavus, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The results proposed Pseudomonas fluorescens SZ1 as an excellent candidate for bioremediation and decontamination of aflatoxin in feed matrices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report identifying B. haynesii, Enterococcus casseliflavus, B. tequilensis and B. amyloliquefaciens with aflatoxin degradation activity.

Abstract
Mycotoxin contamination causes significant economic loss to food and feed industries and seriously threatens human health. Aflatoxins (AFs) are one of the most harmful mycotoxins, which are produced by Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus, and other fungi that are commonly found in the production and preservation of grain and feed. AFs can cause harm to animal and human health due to their toxic (carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic) effects. How to remove AF has become a major problem: biological methods cause no contamination, have high specificity, and work at high temperature, affording environmental protection. In the present research, microorganisms with detoxification effects researched in recent years are reviewed, the detoxification mechanism of microbes on AFs, the safety of degrading enzymes and reaction products formed in the degradation process, and the application of microorganisms as detoxification strategies for AFs were investigated. One of the main aims of the work is to provide a reliable reference strategy for biological detoxification of AFs.

Abstract
Microbial degradation is an effective and attractive method for eliminating aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is severely toxic to humans and animals. In this study, Aspergillus niger RAF106 could effectively degrade AFB1 when cultivated in Sabouraud dextrose broth (SDB) with contents of AFB1 ranging from 0.1 to 4 μg/mL. Treatment with yeast extract as a nitrogen source stimulated the degradation, but treatment with NaNO3 and NaNO2 as nitrogen sources and lactose and sucrose as carbon sources suppressed the degradation. Moreover, A. niger RAF106 still degraded AFB1 at initial pH values that ranged from 4 to 10 and at cultivation temperatures that ranged from 25 to 45 °C. In addition, intracellular enzymes or proteins with excellent thermotolerance were verified as being able to degrade AFB1 into metabolites with low or no mutagenicity. Furthermore, genomic sequence analysis indicated that the fungus was considered to be safe owing to the absence of virulence genes and the gene clusters for the synthesis of mycotoxins. These results indicate that A. niger RAF106 and its intracellular enzymes or proteins have a promising potential to be applied commercially in the processing and industry of food and feed to detoxify AFB1.

Abstract
The pesticides belonging the strobilurin group are among the most common contaminants in the environment. In this work, biodegradation studies of the strobilurin fungicide Pyraclostrobin by bacteria from orange cultivation plots were performed aiming to contribute with the development of a bioremediation method. Experiments were performed in triplicate with validated methods, and optimization was performed by Central Composite Design and Response Surface Methodology. The strains were evaluated in liquid nutrient medium containing 100 mg L-1 of Pyraclostrobin, and decreased concentrations of 61.5 to 100.5 mg L-1 were determined after 5 days at 37 °C and 130 rpm, showing the importance of strain selection. When the five most efficient strains (Bacillus sp. CSA-13, Paenibacillus alvei CBMAI2221, Bacillus sp. CBMAI2222, Bacillus safensis CBMAI2220 and Bacillus aryabhattai CBMAI2223) were used in consortia, synergistic and antagonistic effects were observed accordingly to the employed combination of bacteria, resulting in 64.2 ± 3.9 to 95.4 ± 4.9 mg L-1 residual Pyraclostrobin. In addition, the formation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-3-ol was quantified (0.59-0.01 mg L-1), and a new biodegradation pathway was proposed with 15 identified metabolites. Experiments were also performed in soil under controlled conditions (30 °C, 0-28 days, 100 mg kg-1 pesticide), and the native microbiome reduced the pesticide concentration to 70.4 ± 2.3 mg L-1, whereas the inoculation of an efficient bacterial consortium promoted clearly better results, 57.2 ± 3.9 mg L-1 residual Pyraclostrobin. This suggests that the introduction of these strains in soil in a bioaugmentation process increases decontamination. However, the native microbiome is important for a more efficient bioremediation.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are toxic secondary metabolites mainly produced by Aspergillus fungi, posing high carcinogenic potency in humans and animals. Dietary exposure to aflatoxins is a global problem in both developed and developing countries especially where there is poor regulation of their levels in food and feed. Thus, academics have been striving over the decades to develop effective strategies for degrading aflatoxins in food and feed. These strategies are technologically diverse and based on physical, chemical, or biological principles. This review summarizes the recent progress on novel aflatoxin degradation strategies including irradiation, cold plasma, ozone, electrolyzed oxidizing water, organic acids, natural plant extracts, microorganisms and enzymes. A clear understanding of the detoxification efficiency, mechanism of action, degradation products, application potential and current limitations of these methods is presented. In addition, the development and future perspective of nanozymes in aflatoxins degradation are introduced.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the best aflatoxin B1 degradation conditions which was optimized using a combination of the Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken methods with Panus neostrigosus culture filtrate. Panus neostrigosus was grown in a modified Kirk Broth medium to determine optimal degradation conditions. As a result, aflatoxin B1 was degraded under varying culture conditions. The Plackett-Burman method was designed after sixteen different experiments with fifteen variables. The three most effective variables (Sucrose, yeast extract, wheat bran) were chosen for the Box-Behnken methodology. The aflatoxin B1 degradation rate was 49% in just 1 h exposure to culture filtrate which was obtained under optimal growth conditions; (g-ml/L) sucrose 10, yeast extract 3, wheat bran 3, soytone 5, KH2PO4 2, MgSO4.7H2O 0.5, CaCl2.H2O 0.1, ammonium tartrate 2, trace element solution 10; 28 °C of incubation temperature, medium pH 5, 7.5% inoculum rate, 125 rpm of agitation speed, and a twelve-day incubation period. The SDS-PAGE studies show that the enzyme responsible for AFB1 degradation has 38 kDa molecular weight and has no laccase or MnP activity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for AFB1 degradation by Panus neostrigosus.

Abstract
Some fungal species of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium secretes toxic metabolites known as mycotoxins, have become a global concern that is toxic to different species of animals and humans. Biological mycotoxins detoxification has been studied by researchers around the world as a new strategy for mycotoxin removal. Bacteria, fungi, yeast, molds, and protozoa are the main living organisms appropriate for the mycotoxin detoxification. Enzymatic and degradation sorptions are the main mechanisms involved in microbiological detoxification of mycotoxins. Regardless of the method used, proper management tools that consist of before-harvest prevention and after-harvest detoxification are required. Here, in this review, we focus on the microbiological detoxification and mechanisms involved in the decontamination of mycotoxins.

Abstract
The challenges to fulfill the demand for a safe food supply are dramatically increasing. Mycotoxins produced by certain fungi cause great economic loss and negative impact on the sustainability of food supplies. Moreover, the occurrence of mycotoxins at high levels in foods poses a high health threat for the consumers. Biological detoxification has exhibited a high potential to detoxify foodstuffs on a cost-effective and large scale. Lactic acid bacteria showed a good potential as an alternative strategy for the elimination of mycotoxins. The current review describes the health and economic impacts associated with mycotoxin contamination in foodstuffs. Moreover, this review highlights the biological detoxification of common food mycotoxins by lactic acid bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by Micromonospora purpurea bacteria, effective against Gram-negative bacterial infections. Major fractions of the gentamicin complex (C1, C1a, C2, C2a) possess weak antifungal activity and one of the minor components (A, A1-A4, B, B1, X), gentamicin B1 was found to be a strong antifungal agent. METHODS This work uses in vitro and in vivo dilution methods to compare the antifusarial, antiaspergillic and anticryptococcal effects of gentamicin derivatives and structurally-related congeners. RESULTS The in vitro antifusarial activity of gentamicin B1 (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) 0.4 μg/mL) and structurally-related compounds (MIC 0.8-12.5 μg/mL) suggests that the purpuroseamine ring substituents are responsible for the specific antimycotic effect. The functional groups of the garoseamine and 2-deoxystreptamine rings of gentamicin derivatives are identical in gentamicin compounds and are unlikely to exert a significant antifungal effect. Among soil dermatophytes, Microsporum gypseum was more susceptible to gentamicin B1 (MIC 3.1 µg/mL) than Trichophyton gypseum (MIC 25 µg/mL). The in vitro antifungal effect of gentamicin B1 against plant pathogenic fungi was comparable to primary antifungal agents. CONCLUSION Gentamicin is already in medical use. In vitro and preclinical in vivo synergisms of gentamicin B1 with amphotericin B suggest immediate clinical trials starting with subtoxic doses.

Abstract
In the present study, the CotA protein from Bacillus licheniformis ANSB821 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Apart from the laccase activities, we found that the recombinant CotA could effectively oxidize aflatoxin B1 in the absence of redox mediators. The Km, Kcat and Vmax values of the recombinant CotA towards aflatoxin B1 were 60.62 μM, 0.03 s-1 and 10.08 μg min-1 mg-1, respectively. CotA-mediated aflatoxin B1 degradation products were purified and identified to be aflatoxin Q1 and epi-aflatoxin Q1. The treatment of human liver cells L-02 with aflatoxin Q1 and epi-aflatoxin Q1 did not suppress cell viability and induce apoptosis. Molecular docking simulation revealed that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interaction played an important role in aflatoxin B1-CotA stability. These findings in the current study are promising for a possible application of CotA as a novel aflatoxin oxidase in degrading AFB1 in food.

Abstract
Fermented foods are experiencing a resurgence due to the consumers' growing interest in foods that are natural and health promoting. Microbial fermentation is a biotechnological process which transforms food raw materials into palatable, nutritious and healthy food products. Fermentation imparts unique aroma, flavor and texture to food, improves digestibility, degrades anti-nutritional factors, toxins and allergens, converts phytochemicals such as polyphenols into more bioactive and bioavailable forms, and enriches the nutritional quality of food. Fermentation also modifies the physical functional properties of food materials, rendering them differentiated ingredients for use in formulated foods. The science of fermentation and the technological and health functionality of fermented foods is reviewed considering the growing interest worldwide in fermented foods and beverages and the huge potential of the technology for reducing food loss and improving nutritional food security.

Abstract
Chiral pesticides have been used in agriculture, including (±)-lambda-cyhalothrin ((±)-LC), which is a pyrethroid insecticide widely employed on crops for protection against different types of insects. However, enantioselectivity is poorly studied in biodegradation processes. Therefore, the (±)-LC enantioselective biodegradation by bacteria from Brazilian savannah was reported in this study with a validated analytical method. All bacterial strains biodegraded (±)-LC with different efficiencies. Residual concentrations of LC (3.7-43.1% of biodegradation) and its enantiomeric excesses (0-27% ee) were determined. Additionally, the formation of the main biodegradation metabolite 3-phenoxybenzoic acid was also quantified. A Bacillus consortium composed of the three most efficient strains biodegraded more LC than any isolated strain solely employed in this work, showing that the use of a consortium is an interesting approach. In addition, 13 metabolites were identified and a biodegradation pathway with biochemical reactions of hydrolysis, reduction, esterification, amidation, elimination and group transfer were proposed, confirming the bioremediation potential of these strains. The LC stereoisomer with the highest insecticidal activity (1R,3R,αS-enantiomer, also known as gamma-cyhalothrin) was preferentially biodegraded by the studied bacteria. Therefore, crops protection with gamma-cyhalothrin, which can be applied in lower concentrations than (±)-LC because it is a more effective product against insects, may also be biodegraded faster than the racemic mixture in the environment, decreasing the toxic effects on non-target organisms.

Abstract
The deep-sea bacterium strain FA13 was isolated from the sediment of the South Atlantic Ocean and identified as Bacillus circulans based on 16S ribosomal DNA sequence. Through liquid fermentation with five media, the cell-free supernatant fermented with ISP2 showed the highest inhibition activities against mycelial growth of Aspergillus parasiticus mutant strain NFRI-95 and accumulation of norsolorinic acid, a precursor for aflatoxin production. Based on ISP2, uniform design was used to optimize medium formula and fermentation conditions. After optimization, the inhibition efficacy of the 20-time diluted supernatant against A. parasiticus NFRI-95 mycelial growth and aflatoxin production was increased from 0–23.1% to 100%. Moreover, compared to the original protocol, medium cost and fermentation temperature were significantly reduced, and dependence on seawater was completely relieved, thus preventing the fermentor from corrosion. This is the first report of a deep-sea microorganism which can inhibit A. parasiticus NFRI-95 mycelial growth and aflatoxin production.

Abstract
(1) Background: Aflatoxin contamination in food and grain poses serious problems both for economic development and public health protection, thus leading to a focus on an effective approach to control it; (2) Methods: Aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) degrading bacteria were isolated using a medium containing coumarin as the sole carbon source, and the biodegradation of AFB₁ by the isolate was examined by high performance liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry; (3) Results: a bacterial strain exhibiting strong AFB1 degradation activity (91.5%) was isolated and identified as Bacillusvelezensis DY3108. The AFB₁ degrading activity was predominantly attributed to the cell-free supernatant of strain DY3108. Besides, it was heat-stable and resistant to proteinase K treatment but sensitive to sodium dodecyl sulfate treatment. The optimal temperature for the maximal degradation of AFB₁ was 80 °C. Even more notable, the supernatant showed a high level of activity over a broad pH (4.0 to 11.0) and exhibited the highest degradation (94.70%) at pH 8.0. Cytotoxicity assays indicated that the degradation products displayed significantly (p < 0.05) lower cytotoxic effects than the parent AFB₁; (4) Conclusions: B.velezensis DY3108 might be a promising candidate for exploitation in AFB₁ detoxification and bioremediation in food and feed matrices.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the toxic effect of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and the effectiveness of a biological mycotoxin binder (Nutritox®) in detoxifying aflatoxicosis. Ninety one-day-old chicks were chosen and divided into 3 groups. The first group received standard basal diet only, the second group received a basal diet with AFB1 (0.25 mg/kg diet), and the third group received a basal diet with AFB1 (0.25 mg/kg diet) and Nutritox® (1 kg/ton diet). AFB1 feed contamination significantly reduced growth performance and deteriorated FCR. Moreover, it significantly increased serum AST, ALT, and malondialdehyde and significantly decreased serum total protein, albumin, globulin, SOD, CAT activities and glutathione peroxidase gene expression as well. Aflatoxin residues were detected in the liver tissues. Furthermore, the liver and kidney of AFB1 treated group showed pathological changes. The supplementation of Nutritox® significantly reduced aflatoxin levels in the liver and counteracted the negative effects of AFB1.

Abstract
Aspergillus nidulans has one gene for alternative oxidase (EC 1.10.3.11). To investigate the relationship between this mitochondrial terminal oxidase and the formation of the mycotoxin sterigmatocystin, the encoding aodA gene was both deleted and overexpressed. Relative to the wild-type, the cyanide-resistant fraction of respiration in the late stationary stage—when sterigmatocystin production occurs—doubled in the overexpressing mutant carrying three aodA gene copies, but decreased to 10% in the deletant. Essentially identical results were obtained regardless whether the cultures were illuminated or protected from light. In contrast, sterigmatocystin yield in the aodA deletant was about half of that in the control when grown in the dark, while aodA overexpression resulted in up to 70% more sterigmatocystin formed, the yield increasing with alternative oxidase activity. Results were quite different when cultures were illuminated: under those conditions, sterigmatocystin volumetric yields were considerably lower, and statistically unvarying, regardless of the presence, absence, or the copy number of aodA. We conclude that the copy number of aodA, and hence, the balance between alternative- and cytochrome C-mediated respiration, appears to correlate with sterigmatocystin production in A. nidulans, albeit only in the absence of light.

Abstract
The presence of aflatoxin, a carcinogenic and toxigenic secondary metabolite produced by Aspergillus species, in food matrix has been a major worldwide problem for years now. Food processing methods such as roasting, extrusion, etc. have been employed for effective destruction of aflatoxins, which are known for their thermo-stable nature. The high temperature treatment, adversely affects the nutritive and other quality attributes of the food, leading to the necessity of application of non-thermal processing techniques such as ultrasonication, gamma irradiation, high pressure processing, pulsed electric field (PEF), etc. The present study was focused on analysing the efficacy of the PEF process in the reduction of the toxin content, which was subsequently quantified using HPLC. The process parameters of different pH model system (potato dextrose agar) artificially spiked with aflatoxin mix standard was optimized using the response surface methodology. The optimization of PEF process effects on the responses aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxin reduction (%) by pH (4-10), pulse width (10-26 µs) and output voltage (20-65%), fitted 2FI model and quadratic model respectively. The response surface plots obtained for the processes were of saddle point type, with the absence of minimum or maximum response at the centre point. The implemented numerical optimization showed that the predicted and actual values were similar, proving the adequacy of the fitted models and also proved the possible application of PEF in toxin reduction.

Abstract
Gentamicin, a broad spectrum antibiotic of the aminoglycoside class, is widely used for disease prevention of human beings as well as animals. Nowadays the environmental issue caused by the disposal of wastes containing gentamicin attracts increasing attention. In this study, a gentamicin degrading bacterial consortia named AMQD4, including Providencia vermicola, Brevundimonas diminuta, Alcaligenes sp. and Acinetobacter, was isolated from biosolids produced during gentamicin production for the removal of gentamicin in the environment. The component and structure of gentamicin have a great influence on its degradation and gentamicin C1a and gentamicin C2a were more prone to being degraded. AMQD4 could maintain relatively high gentamicin removal efficiency under a wide range of pH, especially in an alkaline condition. In addition, AMQD4 could remove 56.8% and 47.7% of gentamicin in unsterilized and sterilized sewage in a lab-scale experiment, respectively. And among the isolates in AMQD4, Brevundimonas diminuta BZC3 performed the highest gentamicin degradation about 50%. It was speculated that aac3iia was the gentamicin degradation gene and the main degradation product was 3'-acetylgentamicin. Our results suggest that AMQD4 and Brevundimonas diminuta BZC3 could be important candidates to the list of superior microbes for bioremediation of antibiotic pollution.

Abstract
Mycotoxins, the secondary metabolites of mycotoxigenic fungi, have been found in almost all agricultural commodities worldwide, causing enormous economic losses in livestock production and severe human health problems. Compared to traditional physical adsorption and chemical reactions, interest in biological detoxification methods that are environmentally sound, safe and highly efficient has seen a significant increase in recent years. However, researchers in this field have been facing tremendous unexpected challenges and are eager to find solutions. This review summarizes and assesses the research strategies and methodologies in each phase of the development of microbiological solutions for mycotoxin mitigation. These include screening of functional microbial consortia from natural samples, isolation and identification of single colonies with biotransformation activity, investigation of the physiological characteristics of isolated strains, identification and assessment of the toxicities of biotransformation products, purification of functional enzymes and the application of mycotoxin decontamination to feed/food production. A full understanding and appropriate application of this tool box should be helpful towards the development of novel microbiological solutions on mycotoxin detoxification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Contamination of food and feed by aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) poses serious economic and health problems worldwide, so the development of biological methods for effective AFB1 degradation is strongly required. RESULTS Among three AFB1-degrading microorganisms isolated from moldy peanut, Fusarium sp. WCQ3361 could remove AFB1 extremely effectively, with a degradation ratio of 70.20% after 1 min and 95.38% after 24 h. Its degradation ratio was not much affected by temperature change (0-90 °C) and it also displayed excellent thermostability, maintaining 99.40% residual activity after boiling for 10 min. Since protease K could reduce the AFB1 degradation ratio by 55.15%, it is proposed that the effective component for AFB1 degradation is a protein. The AFB1 degradation ability of Fusarium sp. WCQ3361 was further verified by feed stock detoxification and the MTT test with HepG2 cells. In addition, no degradation products were detected by preliminary liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, suggesting that AFB1 might be metabolized to products with different chemical characteristics from AFB1. CONCLUSION Fusarium sp. WCQ3361 is the first reported AFB1 degradation fungus belonging to the genus Fusarium with broad working temperature range, excellent thermostability and high activity, which provides a potential highly useful solution for dealing with AFB1 contamination in the human diet and animal feed. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Social concern and awareness of the potential risk posed by environmental residues of antibiotics such as gentamicin in the development of antibiotic resistance genes have increased. The present study used laboratory-scale experiments to develop methods for gentamicin removal from the environment. A fungus, strain FZC3, which could remove gentamicin in submerged fermentation, was isolated from solid waste and sewage water from a gentamicin production factory. The fungus was identified as Aspergillus terreus by sequencing the PCR-amplified ITS fragments of its rRNA-coding genes and by its morphology. The gentamicin removal efficiency exceeded 95% by day 7 under optimized culture conditions. The results showed that both biosorption and biodegradation were involved. We speculated that Aspergillus terreus FZC3 absorbed gentamicin and subsequently degraded it. We also found that Aspergillus terreus FZC3 survived and maintained a high bioremediation efficiency over a wide pH range, indicating its potential for future use in the large-scale bioremediation of gentamicin.

Abstract
The worldwide contamination of feeds and foods with mycotoxins is a significant problem. Mycotoxins pose huge health threat to animals and humans. As well, mycotoxins bring enormous economic losses in food industry and animal husbandry annually. Thus, strategies to eliminate or inactivate mycotoxins in food and feed are urgently needed. Traditional physical and chemical methods have some limitations such as limited efficacy, safety issues, losses in the nutritional value and the palatability of feeds, as well as the expensive equipment required to implement these techniques. Biological degradation of mycotoxins has shown promise because it works under mild, environmentally friendly conditions. Aflatoxin (AF), zearalenone (ZEA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) are considered the most economically important mycotoxins in terms of their high prevalence and significant negative effects on animal performance. Therefore, this review will comprehensively describe the biological degradation of AF, ZEA and DON by microorganisms (including fungi and bacteria) and specific enzymes isolated from microbial systems that can convert mycotoxins with varied efficiency to non- or less toxic products. Finally, some strategies and advices on existing difficulties of biodegradation research are also briefly proposed in this paper.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of aflatoxins and evaluate the effectiveness of Bacillus subtilis ANSB060 in detoxifying aflatoxicosis in broilers. A total of 360 one-week-old male broilers (Ross 308) were assigned to six dietary treatments for five weeks. The treatment diets were: C0 (basal diet); C1.0 (C0 + 1.0 g B. subtilis ANSB060/kg diet); M0 (basal diet formulated with moldy peanut meal); M0.5, M1.0 and M2.0 (M0 + 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g B. subtilis ANSB060/kg diet, respectively). The contents of aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2 in the diets formulated with moldy peanut meal were 70.7 ± 1.3, 11.0 ± 1.5, 6.5 ± 0.8 and 2.0 ± 0.3 µg/kg, respectively. The results showed that aflatoxins increased (p < 0.05) serum aspartate transaminase activity, decreased (p < 0.05) serum glutathione peroxidase activity, and enhanced (p < 0.05) malondialdehyde contents in both the serum and liver. Aflatoxins also caused gross and histological changes in liver tissues, such as bile duct epithelium hyperplasia, vacuolar degeneration and lymphocyte infiltration. The supplementation of ANSB060 reduced aflatoxin levels in the duodenum and counteracted the negative effects of aflatoxins, leading to the conclusion that ANSB060 has a protective effect against aflatoxicosis and this protection is dose-related.
