Abstract
The present article describes the synthesis of hybrid composite film materials formed during the self-assembly process through non-covalent interactions of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with salt 1, represented by an anionic spin-crossover complex [FeIII(5Cl-thsa)2]- (5Cl-thsa - 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) and the organic tetraethylammonium cation [Et4N]+. The insertion of the salt 1 molecules into the interlayer space of GO nanosheets with the subsequent formation of a hybrid material GO-1 was observed. The film of the hybrid material GO-1 was characterized by scanning electron and confocal laser microscopy, EDX and XPS analysis, IR, Raman and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, dc magnetic measurements, and powder X-ray diffraction. Comparison of the magnetic properties of salt 1 and a film of the hybrid material GO-1 demonstrated a significant influence of the GO nanosheets matrix on the completeness of spin transition and showed a slight shift of the hysteresis loop by 1 K in the temperature range of 200-230 K. DFT calculations showed an important role of the organic cation [Et4N]+ in the process of adsorption of the spin-crossover anion [FeIII(5Cl-thsa)2]- on the GO nanosheet surface.

Abstract
This work presents a straightforward, room-temperature synthesis of a robust {[Fe(atrz)3](OTs)2}n monolith. This approach offers a green alternative to traditional nanoparticle synthesis for manipulating spin crossover (SCO) behaviour. The monolith exhibits a more gradual SCO transition at lower temperatures compared to the bulk material, aligning with observations in smaller particle systems. Notably, the synthesis employs a solvent- and surfactant-free approach, simplifying the process and potentially reducing environmental impact, aligning with the principles of green chemistry.

Abstract
A novel family of cobalt(II) compounds with tridentate pyridine-2,6-diiminephenyl type ligands featuring electron-withdrawing substituents of general formula [Co(n-XPhPDI)2](ClO4)2·S [n-XPhPDI = 2,6-bis(N-n-halophenylformimidoyl)pyridine with n = 4 (1-3) and 3 (4); X = I (1), Br (2 and 4) and Cl (3); S = MeCN (1 and 2) and EtOAc (3)] has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements combined with theoretical calculations. The structures of 1-4 consist of mononuclear bis(chelating) cobalt(II) complex cations, [CoII(n-XPhPDI)2]2+, perchlorate anions, and acetonitrile (1 and 2) or ethyl acetate (3) molecules of crystallisation. This unique series of mononuclear six-coordinate octahedral cobalt(II) complexes displays both thermally-induced low-spin (LS)/high-spin (HS) transition and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in both LS and HS states. A complete LS ↔ HS transition occurs for 1 and 2, while it is incomplete for 4, one-third of the complexes being HS at low temperatures. In contrast, 3 remains HS in all the temperature range. 1 and 2 show dual spin relaxation dynamics under the presence of an applied dc magnetic field (Hdc), with the occurrence of faster- (FR) and slower-relaxing (SR) processes at lower (Hdc = 1.0 kOe) and higher fields (Hdc = 2.5 kOe), respectively. On the contrary, 3 and 4 exhibit only SR and FR relaxations, regardless of Hdc. Overall, the distinct field-dependence of the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour along with this family of spin-crossover (SCO) cobalt(II)-n-XPhPDI complexes is dominated by Raman mechanisms and, occasionally, with additional temperature-independent Intra-Kramer [LS or HS (D > 0)] or Quantum Tunneling of Magnetisation mechanisms [HS (D < 0)] also contributing.

Abstract
Calculation of transition temperatures T1/2 for thermally driven spin-crossover in condensed phases is challenging, even with sophisticated state-of-the-art density functional approximations. The first issue is the accuracy of the adiabatic crossover energy difference ΔEHL between the low- and high-spin states of the bistable metal-organic complexes. The other is the proper inclusion of entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy from the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. We discuss the effects of treatments of both contributions upon the calculation of thermochemical properties for a set of 20 spin-crossover materials using a Hubbard-U correction obtained from a reference ensemble spin-state. The U values obtained from a simplest bimolecular representation may overcorrect, somewhat, the ΔEHL values, hence giving somewhat excessive reduction of the T1/2 results with respect to their U = 0 values in the crystalline phase. We discuss the origins of the discrepancies by analyzing different sources of uncertainties. By use of a first-coordination-sphere approximation and the assumption that vibrational contributions from the outermost atoms in a metal-organic complex are similar in both low- and high-spin states, we achieve T1/2 results with the low-cost, widely used PBE generalized gradient density functional approximation comparable to those from the more costly, more sophisticated r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation. The procedure is promising for use in high-throughput materials screening, because it combines rather low computational effort requirements with freedom from user manipulation of parameters.

Abstract
We have investigated magnetic phase diagrams of spin-crossover (SCO) solids throughout the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin-1 model where the spin states ±1 and 0 are associated to high-spin state and low-spin states respectively. In the present work, the quadrupolar interaction,K, parameter depends linearly on temperature and accounts for the role of the lattice phonons in the elastic interactions between the SCO units. Magnetic interactions are randomly distributed in the system and are controlled by a factorγ=Jij/Ksuch that forγ = 0 (Jij=0), magnetic ordering is not expected. The crystal-field that acts on SCO sites depends both on the ligand-field strength and the degeneracy ratio between HS and LS states as in some previous works. The system is also under the effect of a random local magnetic fieldhiacting on each sitei. The model is solved using a homogeneous mean field theory. Our investigations reveal the occurrence of thermally-induced gradual, and first-order spin-transitions by varying the model parameters. At vicinity of first-order transition, various types of isothermal magnetic hysteresis loops are obtained and their corresponding coercive field and loop patterns are discussed as function of temperature.

Abstract
Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in FeII -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) materials display many fascinating behaviors including collective phase transitions and spin-state switching controlled by external stimuli, e.g., light and electrical currents. As single-molecule switches, they have been fêted for numerous practical applications, but these remain largely unrealized-partly because of the difficulty of switching these materials at high temperatures. We introduce a semiempirical microscopic model of SCO materials combining crystal field theory with elastic intermolecular interactions. For realistic parameters, this model reproduces the key experimental results including thermally induced phase transitions, light-induced spin-state trapping (LIESST), and reverse-LIESST. Notably, we reproduce and explain the experimentally observed relationship between the critical temperature of the thermal transition, T1/2, and the highest temperature for which the trapped state is stable, TLIESST, and explain why increasing the stiffness of the coordination sphere increases TLIESST. We propose strategies to design SCO materials with higher TLIESST: optimizing the spin-orbit coupling via heavier atoms (particularly in the inner coordination sphere) and minimizing the enthalpy difference between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. However, the most dramatic increases arise from increasing the cooperativity of the spin-state transition by increasing the rigidity of the crystal. Increased crystal rigidity can also stabilize the HS state to low temperatures on thermal cycling yet leave the LS state stable at high temperatures following, for example, reverse-LIESST. We show that such highly cooperative systems offer a realistic route to robust room-temperature switching, demonstrate this in silico, and discuss material design rationale to realize this.

Abstract
Bare (1) and silica coated (1@SiO2) spin crossover (SCO) nanoparticles based on the polymer {[Fe(NH2Trz)3](BF4)2}n have been prepared following a water-in-oil synthetic procedure. For 1, the critical temperatures of the spin transition are TC↓ = 214.6 K and TC↑ = 220.9 K. For 1@SiO2, the abruptness of the transition is enhanced and the critical temperatures are centred at room temperature (TC↓ = 292.1 K and TC↑ = 296.3 K). An inert Re(I) complex of formula [Re(phen)(CO)3(PETES)](PF6) (phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline; PETES = 2(4-pyridylethyl)triethoxysilane) (Re) was also synthesized yielding intense green emission centred at λem = 560 nm. The grafting of this complex on the silica shell of 1@SiO2 led to a bifunctional SCO-luminescence composite (1@SiO2/Re) whose luminescence properties were tuned by the spin state switching. Temperature-variable photophysical studies showed that luminescence and spin transition were synchronized through a radiative (trivial) energy transfer mechanism between the Re(I) and the Fe(II)-LS (LS, Low Spin) centres.

Abstract
Herein we report the design of core@shell nanoparticles formed by a metallic Au nanostar core and a spin-crossover shell based on the coordination polymer [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4). This procedure is general and has been extended to other metallic morphologies (nanorods, nanotriangles). Thanks to the photothermal effect arising from the plasmonic properties of the Au nanostar, 60% of iron centers undergo a thermal spin transition inside the thermal hysteresis triggered by a 808 nm laser low intensity irradiation. Compared to other Au morphologies, the great advantage of the nanostar shape arises from the hot spots created at the branches of the nanostar. These hot spots give rise to large NIR absorptions, making them ideal nanostructures for efficiently converting light into heat using low energy light, like that provided by a 808 nm laser.

Abstract
Two tridentate ligands (L1 = 2,6-bis(1-(3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine and L2 = 2,6-bis(1-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) and one didentate ligand (L3 = 1-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)-2-pyridine-2-yl-1H-benzimidazol) were used for the synthesis of eight mononuclear Fe(ii) compounds 1-8 containing miscellaneous counterions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the expected molecular structures of all the reported coordination compounds and revealed the octahedral geometry of metal centres in the complex dications of 1-8. Compounds 1-6 prepared from tridentate ligands were low-spin and, therefore, diamagnetic up to 400 K. On the other hand, compounds 7 and 8, in which the Fe(ii) centre was coordinated with didentate ligand L3, exhibited temperature and light triggered spin-crossover behaviour. The theoretical calculations supported the experimental magnetic investigation and helped to explain the electronic structures of the reported complexes with respect to the occurrence of thermal and light induced spin state switching. In addition, the solution redox properties of compounds 1-8 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
Reaction of 1,2-di(tetrazol-2-yl)ethane (ebtz) with Fe(BF4 )2 ⋅6 H2 O in different nitriles yields one-dimensional coordination polymers [Fe(ebtz)2 (RCN)2 ](BF4 )2 ⋅nRCN (n=2 for R=CH3 (1) and n=0 for R=C2 H5 (2) C3 H7 (3), C3 H5 (4), CH2 Cl (5)) exhibiting spin crossover (SCO). SCO in 1 and 3-5 is complete and occurs above 160 K. In 2, it is shifted to lower temperatures and is accompanied by wide hysteresis (T1/2 ↓ =78 K, T1/2 ↑ =123 K) and proceeds extremely slowly. Isothermal (80 K) time-resolved single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed a complex nature for the HS→LS transition in 2. An initial, slow stage is associated with shrinkage of polymeric chains and with reduction of volume at 77 % (in relation to the difference between cell volumes VHS -VLS ) whereas only 16 % of iron(II) ions change spin state. In the second stage, an abrupt SCO occurs, associated with breathing of the crystal lattice along the direction of the Fe-nitrile bonds, while the nitriles reorient. HS→LS switching triggered by light (808 nm) reveals the coupling of spin state and nitrile orientation. The importance of this coupling was confirmed by studies of [Fe(ebtz)2 (C2 H5 CN/C3 H7 CN)2 ](BF4 )2 mixed crystals (2 a, 2 b), showing a shift of T1/2 to higher values and narrowing of the hysteresis loop concomitant with an increase of the fraction of butyronitrile. This increase reduces the capability of nitrile molecules to reorient. Density functional theory (DFT) studies of models of 1-5 suggest a particular possibility of 2 to adopt a low (140-145°) value of its Fe-N-C(propionitrile) angle.

Abstract
Three new iron(II) 1D coordination polymers with cooperative spin crossover behavior showing thermal hysteresis loops were synthesized using N2O2 Schiff base-like equatorial ligands and 4,4′-dipyridylethyne as a bridging, rigid axial linker. One of those iron(II) 1D coordination polymers showed a 73 K wide hysteresis below room temperature, which, upon solvent loss, decreased to a still remarkable 30 K wide hysteresis. Single crystal X-ray structures of two iron(II) coordination polymers and T-dependent powder XRD patterns are discussed to obtain insight into the structure property relationship of those materials.

Abstract
The structural stability and photoabsorption properties of Ni(II)-based metal-organic complexes with octahedral coordination having different planar ligand ring structures were investigated employing density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT) considering the M06 exchange-correlation functional and the Def2-TZVP basis set. The results showed that the molecular composition of different planar cyclic ligand structures had significant influences on the structural stability and photoabsorption properties of metal-organic complexes. Only those planar ligands that contained aromatic rings met the basic criteria (thermal stability, structural reversibility, and appropriate excitation frequency domain) for light-induced excited spin state trapping, but their spin transition efficiencies were very different. While, in all three aromatic cases, the singlet electronic excitations induced charge distribution that could help in the singlet-to-triplet spin transition, and triplet excitations, which could assist in the backward (triplet-to-singlet) spin transition, was found only for one complex.

Abstract
We have investigated by means of optical microscopy and magnetic measurements the first-order thermal spin transition of the [{Fe(NCSe)(py)2}2(m-bpypz)] spin-crossover compound under various shining intensities, far from the light-induced spin-state trapping region. We found evidence of photo-heating effects on the thermally-induced hysteretic response of this spin-crossover material, thus causing the shift of the thermal hysteresis to lower temperature regions. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the apparent crystal temperature and are analyzed theoretically using two evolution equations of motion, written on the high-spin (HS) fraction and heat balance between the crystal and the thermal bath. A very good qualitative agreement was found between experiment and theory in the stationary regime, explaining the experimental observations well and identifying the key factors governing these photo-thermal effects.

Abstract
Nanoscale spin crossover materials capable of undergoing reversible switching between two electronic configurations with markedly different physical properties are excellent candidates for various technological applications. In particular, they can serve as active materials for storing and processing information in photonic, mechanical, electronic, and spintronic devices as well as for transducing different forms of energy in sensors and actuators. In this progress report, a brief overview on the current state-of-the-art of experimental and theoretical studies of nanomaterials displaying spin transition is presented. Based on these results, a detailed analysis and discussions in terms of finite size effects and other phenomena inherent to the reduced size scale are provided. Finally, recent research devices using spin crossover complexes are highlighted, emphasizing both challenges and prospects.

Abstract
A spin-crossover coordination polymer [Fe(L1)(bipy)]n (where L = a N2O22- coordinating Schiff base-like ligand bearing a phenazine fluorophore and bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) was synthesized and exhibits a 48 K wide thermal hysteresis above room temperature (T1/2↑ = 371 K and T1/2↓ = 323 K) that is stable for several cycles. The spin transition was characterized using magnetic measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DSC measurements. T-dependent X-ray powder diffraction reveals a structural phase transition coupled with the spin transition phenomenon. The dimeric excerpt {(μ-bipy)[FeL1(MeOH)]2}·2MeOH of the coordination polymer chain crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅ and reveals that the packing of the molecules in the crystal is dominated by hydrogen bonds. Investigation of the emission properties of the complexes with regard to temperature shows that the spin crossover can be tracked by monitoring the emission spectra, since the emission color changes from greenish to a yellow color upon the low spin-to-high spin transition.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) triazole-based coordination polymers can be synthesized by micelle techniques, which almost always lead to rod-shaped nanoparticles. In order to notably reach new morphologies, we explore here the potentiality of the spray-drying (SD) method to get SCO materials. Three SCO coordination polymers and a mononuclear complex are investigated. In all cases, the SD method obtains particles definitely showing SCO. The features of the latter are yet always different from those of the referenced materials, in the sense that SCO is more gradual and incomplete, in adequacy with the poor crystallinity of the powders obtained by SD. In the case of coordination polymers, the particles are preferentially spherical. Indications of possible polymorphism and/or new materials induced by the use of the SD method are evidenced. In the case of the mononuclear complex, the SD method has allowed reproducing, in a quick and easy way, the well-known bulk compound. This exploratory work demonstrates the relevance of the concept and opens the way to a systematic scrutiny of all the experimental parameters to tune the size, morphology, and properties of the SD-synthesized SCO particles.
