Abstract
OBJECTIVE Given the population-level variation in stature, a universal cut-off for waist circumference (WC) may not be appropriate for some populations. We compared the performance of WC and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) to detect the clustering of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in rural Vietnam. METHODS We obtained data from a baseline survey of the Khanh Hoa Cardiovascular Study comprising 2942 middle-aged residents (40-60 years). We used areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC), net reclassification index (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) to compare the performance of WC and WHtR in predicting CVD risk clustering (≥2 of the following risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and elevated C-reactive protein). RESULTS The optimal cut-off values for WC were 81.8 and 80.7 cm for men and women, respectively. Regarding the clustering of CVD risk factors, the AUROC (95% CI) of WC and WHtR were 0.707 (0.676 to 0.739) and 0.719 (0.689 to 0.749) in men, and 0.682 (0.654 to 0.709) and 0.690 (0.663 to 0.717) in women, respectively. Compared with WC, WHtR had a better NRI (0.229; 0.102-0.344) and IDI (0.012; 0.004-0.020) in men and a better NRI (0.154; 0.050-0.257) in women. CONCLUSIONS The optimal WC cut-off for Vietnamese men was approximately 10 cm below the recommended Asian cut-off. WHtR might perform slightly better in predicting the clustering of CVD risk factors among the rural population in Vietnam.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the associations of conicity index (C-index) and relative fat mass (RFM) with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among adults in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 10 813 participants aged over 18 years in Shenzhen Longhua district were enrolled in a follow-up study conducted from 2018 to 2022. The participants were categorized based on quartiles (Q) of C-index and RFM. The Cox proportional hazards model was performed to examine the relationships between C-index, RFM and the risk of T2DM. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, including age, sex, occupation, marital status, education level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical exercise, hypertension status, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and total cholesterol (TC), both C-index and RFM showed positive and independent associations with risk of T2DM. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for T2DM risk in participants in C-index Q3 and Q4 compared with those in C-index Q1 were 1.50 (1.12, 2.02) and 1.73 (1.29, 2.30), and 1.94 (1.44, 2.63), 3.18 (1.79, 5.64), 4.91 (2.68, 9.00) for participants in RFM Q2, Q3 and Q4 compared with RFM Q1. These differences were statistically significant (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION C-index and RFM are strongly associated with new-onset T2DM and could be used to identify the risk of diabetes in large-scale epidemiological studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare anthropometric indices to predict type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among first-degree relatives of diabetic patients in the Iranian community. METHODS In this study, information on 3483 first-degree relatives (FDRs) of diabetic patients was extracted from the database of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Overall, 2082 FDRs were included in the analyses. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between anthropometric indices and the odds of having diabetes. Furthermore, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to estimate the optimal cutoff point based on the sensitivity and specificity of each index. In addition, the indices were compared based on the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS The overall prevalence of diabetes was 15.3%. The optimal cutoff points for anthropometric measures among men were 25.09 for body mass index (BMI) (AUC = 0.573), 0.52 for waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (AUC = 0.648), 0.91 for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (AUC = 0.654), 0.08 for a body shape index (ABSI) (AUC = 0.599), 3.92 for body roundness index (BRI) (AUC = 0.648), 27.27 for body adiposity index (BAI) (AUC = 0.590), and 8 for visceral adiposity index (VAI) (AUC = 0.596). The optimal cutoff points for anthropometric indices were 28.75 for BMI (AUC = 0.610), 0.55 for the WHtR (AUC = 0.685), 0.80 for the WHR (AUC = 0.687), 0.07 for the ABSI (AUC = 0.669), 4.34 for the BRI (AUC = 0.685), 39.95 for the BAI (AUC = 0.583), and 6.15 for the VAI (AUC = 0.658). The WHR, WHTR, and BRI were revealed to have fair AUC values and were relatively greater than the other indices for both men and women. Furthermore, in women, the ABSI and VAI also had fair AUCs. However, BMI and the BAI had the lowest AUC values among the indices in both sexes. CONCLUSION The WHtR, BRI, VAI, and WHR outperformed other anthropometric indices in predicting T2DM in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of diabetic patients. However, further investigations in different populations may need to be implemented to justify their widespread adoption in clinical practice.

Abstract
(1) Background: Military personnel worldwide exhibit high rates of obesity. Obesity, and especially visceral obesity, contribute to various health issues, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). While BMI is commonly used to diagnose obesity, it has limitations and does not consider factors like fat distribution or muscle mass. This study aims to assess the relationship between BMI, percent body fat, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and cardiovascular risk factors in Polish military flying personnel. Methods: This study involved 200 men from the Polish Air Force aged 38.8 ± 8.5 years. Anthropometric tests, body composition tests, and tests of biochemical markers of CVD were conducted. (2) Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity varied based on the evaluation criterion; they were present in 63.5% of soldiers by BMI and in 52.5% by percent body fat; abdominal obesity was present in almost half (47%) of the surveyed soldiers according to WC and in 62.5% according to WHtR. All markers of obesity correlated positively with various biochemical markers of CVD, and 8.5% of subjects met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. (3) Conclusions: The prevalence of obesity in Polish military flying personnel, regardless of the evaluation criterion, is associated with significant metabolic complications in the form of lipid disorders and insulin resistance.

Abstract
Introduction: A waist to height ratio (WHtR) greater than 0.5 may be a global screening tool for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. However, it is unclear whether WHtR could be used instead of BMI. This study aimed to evaluate the role of BMI regarding CVD and diabetes in a subset of Turkish adults with WHtR greater than 0.5.
Material and Method: The cross-sectional study involved 118 participants with WHtR>0.5, 18 years and older who applied to the endocrinology and metabolism disease outpatient clinic between September 2019 and February 2020. WHtR and BMI were calculated.
Results: The prevalence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia increased with BMI. WHtR was correlated with FBG. BMI was significantly associated with TG, HDL-c, SBP, and DBP in linear regression analysis, but not with FBG. On the other hand, there was a significant association between WHtR and FBG.
Conclusion: This study confirmed that the simple value of ‘0.5’ for WHtR was associated with diabetes risk. The cut-off value of 35 for BMI was effective categorizing participants with high blood pressure and lipid levels in paticipants with high WHtR. Further population-based studies in Turkish adults are needed to evaluate whether WHtR could be used independent from BMI as an early warning of cardiovascular risks for preventive interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity is more likely to increase the chance of many adult health problems. Numerous studies have shown obese children to be more prone to elevated blood pressure (BP) and hypertension. It is important to identify an obesity anthropometric index with good discriminatory power for them in pediatric population. METHODS MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were retrieved comprehensively for eligible studies on childhood obesity and hypertension/elevated BP through June 2021. The systematic review and meta-analysis of studies used receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves for evaluating the discriminatory power of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in distinguishing children with elevated BP and hypertension. RESULTS 21 cross-sectional studies involving 177,943 children and 3-19 years of age were included in our study. Meta-analysis showed that the pooled area under the reporting receiver-operating characteristic curves (AUC) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for BMI, WC, and WHtR to detect hypertension of boys were 0.68 (0.64, 0.72), 0.69 (0.64, 0.74), 0.67 (0.63, 0.71), for elevated BP, the pooled AUCs and 95% CIs were 0.67 (0.61, 0.73), 0.65 (0.58, 0.73), 0.65 (0.61, 0.71). The pooled AUCs and 95% CIs for BMI, WC and WHtR of predicting hypertension were 0.70 (0.66, 0.75), 0.69 (0.64, 0.75), 0.67 (0.63, 0.72) in girls, the pooled AUCs and 95% CIs of predicting elevated BP were 0.63 (0.61, 0.65), 0.62 (0.60, 0.65), 0.62 (0.60, 0.64) respectively. There was no anthropometric index was statistically superior in identifying hypertension and elevated BP, however, the accuracy of BMI predicting hypertension was significantly higher than elevated BP in girls (P < 0.05). The subgroup analysis for the comparison of BMI, WC and WHtR was performed, no significant difference in predicting hypertension and elevated BP in pediatric population. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review showed that no anthropometric index was superior in identifying hypertension and elevated BP in pediatric population. While compared with predicting elevated BP, all the indicators showed superiority in predicting hypertension in children, the difference was especially obvious in girls. A better anthropometric index should be explored to predict children's early blood pressure abnormalities.

Abstract
AIMS To compare the associations between four anthropometric indices including waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip-ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) and cardio-cerebrovascular events (CCBVEs) in Chinese T2DM patients. METHODS The associations of four anthropometric measures with CCBVEs and metabolic syndrome (MetS) were compared by multiple regression model in 3108 T2DM patients. CCBVEs was defined as a history of myocardial infarction, angina, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery, transient ischemic attack, ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. RESULTS After controlling for age, sex and diabetes duration, the prevalence of CCBVEs and MetS significantly increased across the WHtR, WC, WHR and BMI quartiles in T2DM patients, respectively. However, when controlling for these four anthropometric measurements together, although four anthropometric measures were closely associated with MetS prevalence, only WHtR quartile was significantly associated with CCBVEs prevalence (6.5%, 13.8%, 16.9% and 21.3%, p < 0.001 for trend). After adjusting for multiple confounders including four anthropometric parameters, a regression analysis revealed that only WHtR was independently and positively associated with the presence of CCBVEs (p = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS Compared with WC, WHR and BMI, WHtR have a stronger association with CCBVEs in T2DM subjects. WHtR maybe a better indicator than other anthropometric measurements for evaluating cardiovascular risks in T2DM.

Abstract
Current screening algorithms for type 2 diabetes (T2D) rely on fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and/or HbA1c. This fails to identify a sizeable subgroup of individuals in early stages of metabolic dysregulation who are at high risk for developing diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The Matsuda index, a combination of parameters derived from a fasting and postprandial insulin assay, is an early biomarker for metabolic dysregulation (i.e. insulin resistance/compensatory hyperinsulinemia). The aim of this analysis was to compare four widely available anthropometric and biochemical markers indicative of this condition [waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), hypertriglyceridemic-waist phenotype (HTW), triglycerides-to-HDL-C ratio (TG/HDL-C) and FPG] to the Matsuda index. This cross-sectional analysis included 2231 individuals with normal fasting glucose (NFG, n = 1333), impaired fasting glucose (IFG, n = 599) and T2D (n = 299) from an outpatient diabetes clinic in Germany and thus extended a prior analysis from our group done on the first two subgroups. We analyzed correlations of the Matsuda index with WHtR, HTW, TG/HDL-C and FPG and their predictive accuracies by correlation and logistic regression analyses and receiver operating characteristics. In the entire group and in NFG, IFG and T2D, the best associations were observed between the Matsuda index and the WHtR (r = - 0.458), followed by HTW phenotype (r = - 0.438). As for prediction accuracy, WHtR was superior to HTW, TG/HDL-C and FPG in the entire group (AUC 0.801) and NFG, IFG and T2D. A multivariable risk score for the prediction of insulin resistance was tested and demonstrated an area under the ROC curve of 0.765 for WHtR and its interaction with sex as predictor controlled by age and sex. The predictive power increased to 0.845 when FPG and TG/HDL-C were included. Using as a comparator the Matsuda index, WHtR, compared to HTW, TG/HDL-C and FPG, showed the best predictive value for detecting metabolic dysregulation. We conclude that WHtR, a widely available anthropometric index, could refine phenotypic screening for insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia. This may ameliorate early identification of individuals who are candidates for appropriate therapeutic interventions aimed at addressing the twin epidemic of metabolic and cardiovascular disease in settings where more extended testing such as insulin assays are not feasible.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of waist to height ratio (WHtR) to screen for cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Saudis. Methods: Between June 2013 and August 2014, a cross-sectional study of 3,063 adult Saudis of both genders from King Khalid Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was conducted. Using the “WHO STEPwise Surveillance-Instrument V2.1”, which uses sequential steps including questionnaires and anthropometric and biochemical measurements of MetS and CVRF. Waist to height ratio validity in defining central obesity, MetS, and CVRF were tested using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy. Using multivariate regression analyses for adjustment of confounders as age and gender were applied to compute adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Results: The diagnostic potential of WHtR was excellent for central obesity (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.98), and MetS (AUCs = 0.86); it was good for CVRF ≥2 (AUCs = 0.79) and was satisfactory for dyslipidemia (AUCs = 0.66). The sensitivities and negative predictive values exceeded 85% for diagnosing central obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Adjusted odds ratios for age and gender showed that WHtR ≥0.50 significantly increased the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and ≥2 CVRF by almost 4-fold, and increased the risk of dyslipidemia by 2-fold. Conclusion: Waist height ratio showed a good diagnostic performance for CVRF and MetS among Saudis. Furthermore, WHtR ≥0.5 increased the risk of dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

Abstract
Background The rate of hypertension and obesity is increasing in Vietnamese society. This study aimed to focus on assessing the relationship between anthropometric indexes (body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) and high blood pressure to determine which is the best predictor for high blood pressure among adults over 18 years in Vietnam. Methods A cross-sectional study of 1636 people was conducted. People who were over 18 years old, healthy or had hyperlipidemia and on the treatment were recruited. Patients with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and hypertension were excluded. Information on demographics, smoking and drinking habits, weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure was collected. Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were examined to determine the predictability of anthropometric indicators for high blood pressure in men and women. Logistic regression analysis, stratified by gender, was performed to examine the association between anthropometric indexes and high blood pressure. Results In this study, the percentage of people with high blood pressure was 10.51%. The AUC for the WHtR was significantly greater than for the BMI for both genders. Logistic regression demonstrated that only WHtR had a significant positive association with high blood pressure among women. The optimal WHtR cut-off value for predicting high blood pressure in men and women were 0.47 and 0.50, respectively. Conclusion Among the indicators analyzed in this study, WHtR was the best for the predicting of the presence of high blood pressure, in both men and women. However, WHtR could only explain the changes of high blood pressure in women.

Abstract
Excess central adiposity accelerates the decline of muscle strength in older people. Additionally, hyperglycemia, independent of associated comorbidities, is related to the loss of muscle mass and strength, and contributes to functional impairment in older adults. We studied the mediation effect of glucose levels, in the relationship between abdominal obesity and relative handgrip strength (HGS). A total of 1571 participants (60.0% women, mean age 69.1 ± 7.0 years) from 86 municipalities were selected following a multistage area probability sampling design. Measurements included demographic and anthropometric/adiposity markers (weight, height, body mass index, and waist circumference). HGS was measured using a digital dynamometer for three sets and the mean value was recorded. The values were normalized to body weight (relative HGS). Fasting glucose was analyzed by enzymatic colorimetric methods. Mediation analyses were performed to identify associations between the independent variable (abdominal obesity) and outcomes (relative HGS), as well as to determine whether fasting glucose levels mediated the relationship between excess adiposity and relative HGS. A total of 1239 (78.8%) had abdominal obesity. Abdominal obesity had a negative effect on fasting glucose (β = 9.04, 95%CI = 5.87 to 12.21); while fasting glucose to relative HGS was inversely related (β = −0.003, 95%CI = −0.005 to −0.001), p < 0.001. The direct effect of abdominal obesity on relative HGS was statistically significant (β = −0.069, 95%CI = −0.082 to −0.057), p < 0.001. Lastly, fasting glucose levels mediates the detrimental effect of abdominal obesity on relative HGS (indirect effect β = −0.002, 95%CI = −0.004 to −0.001), p < 0.001. Our results suggest that the glucose level could worsen the association between abdominal obesity status and lower HGS. Thus, it is plausible to consider fasting glucose levels when assessing older adults with excess adiposity and/or suspected loss of muscle mass.

Abstract
This study aims to study the efficiency of the Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) for determining coronary artery disease. It compares the frequency of abnormal WHtR, as a proxy for abdominal obesity, to that of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). It also relates the findings to other cardiometabolic risk factors in University Hospital patients. A cross-sectional study design was used, where a sample of 200 patients (142 males and 58 females) who attended the adult cardiac clinic were purposively included. BMI, WC, and WHtR were measured, where frequencies of WHtR were compared to those of BMI and WC. The findings were related to the history of coronary artery disease (CAD) and history of cardiometabolic risk factors, including diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), and hyperlipidemia. Majority of the male patients were older, taller, and had a lower BMI value. It also showed that the prevalence of dyslipidemia and CAD was higher in male patients. No significant difference between both genders was noticed for weight, WC, WHtR, hypertension, or DM. BMI was least associated with high-risk cardiac population in both males and females (39.4% and 60.3%), followed by WC (84.5% and 96.6%, respectively). WHtR showed the highest association with gender (male 98.6% and females 98.3%). These findings were noticed in patients with all risk factors. WHtR is superior to BMI and WC for determining the elevated risk of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and CAD in a single university institute. The role of WHtR in both normal and diseased Saudi population should be delineated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the past decade, the prevalence of diabetes has grown more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. In 2019, Ethiopia is the fourth highest contributor to cases with diabetes in Africa with 1.7 million total cases. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of abnormal glucose metabolism and associated factors in Mekelle city, Northern Ethiopia. METHODS AND MATERIALS Community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 321 randomly selected participants aged 20 years and above. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, clinical, and anthropometric data were collected in accordance with the STEPwise approach as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for non-communicable disease (NCDs) surveillance. Blood glucose and lipid profiles were determined using a fasting venous blood sample. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with abnormal glucose metabolism. The level of statistical significance was set at p ≤0.05. RESULTS More than half (54.8%) of the participants were women with an overall mean (±SD) age of 39.0 (±14.2) years. The overall prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes was 12.5% and 9.3%, respectively, with a mean (±SD) fasting blood glucose of 97.42 (±38.03) mg/dL. More than two-thirds (70.0%) of adults with diabetes were not aware of being diabetes. Advanced age, hypercholesterolemia, medium and high rank of heart rate, and raised waist to height ratio were significantly associated with a higher risk of pre-diabetes, whereas having house servant, systolic hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia were significantly associated with diabetes. CONCLUSION We found a high prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes with more than two-thirds (70.0%) of newly diagnosed adults with diabetes, which showed a lack of awareness in the community. Awareness creation together with access to basic diagnostics in the primary health-care settings should therefore be a top priority to prevent its progression and complication.

Abstract
AbstractThe National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has acknowledged the value of waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) as an indicator for ‘early health risk’. We used recent UK data to explore whether classification based on WHtR identifies more adults at cardiometabolic risk than the ‘matrix’ based on BMI and waist circumference, currently used for screening. Data from the Health Survey for England (4112 adults aged 18+ years) were used to identify cardiometabolic risk, indicated by raised glycated Hb, dyslipidaemia and hypertension. HbA1c, total/HDL-cholesterol and systolic blood pressure (BP) were more strongly associated with WHtR than the ‘matrix’. In logistic regression models for HbA1c ≥ 48 mmol/mol, total/HDL-cholesterol > 4 and hypertension (BP > 140/90 mmHg or on medication), WHtR had a higher predictive value than the ‘matrix’. AUC was significantly greater for WHtR than the ‘matrix’ for raised HbA1c and hypertension. Of adults with raised HbA1c, 15 % would be judged as ‘no increased risk’ using the ‘matrix’ in contrast to 3 % using WHtR < 0·5. For hypertension, comparative values were 23 and 9 %, and for total/HDL-cholesterol > 4, 26 and 13 %. Nearly one-third of the ‘no increased risk’ group in the ‘matrix’ had WHtR ≥ 0·5 and hence could be underdiagnosed for cardiometabolic risk. WHtR has the potential to be a better indicator of cardiometabolic risks associated with central obesity than the current NICE ‘matrix’. The cut-off WHtR 0·5 in early screening translates to a simple message, ‘your waist should be less than half your height’, that allows individuals to be aware of their health risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Short stature and leg length are associated with risk of diabetes and obesity. However, it remains unclear whether this association is observed in Asians. We evaluated the association between short stature and increased risk for diabetes using the Korean National Health Screening (KNHS) dataset. METHODS We assessed diabetes development in 2015 in 21,122,422 non-diabetic Koreans (mean age 43 years) enrolled in KNHS from 2009 to 2012 using International Classification of Diseases 10th (ICD-10) code and anti-diabetic medication prescription. Risk was measured in age- and sex-dependent quintile groups of baseline height (20 to 39, 40 to 59, ≥60 years). RESULTS During median 5.6-year follow-up, 532,918 cases (2.5%) of diabetes occurred. The hazard ratio (HR) for diabetes development gradually increased from the 5th (reference) to 1st quintile group of baseline height after adjustment for confounding factors (1.000, 1.076 [1.067 to 1.085], 1.097 [1.088 to 1.107], 1.141 [1.132 to 1.151], 1.234 [1.224 to 1.244]), with similar results in analysis by sex. The HR per 5 cm height increase was lower than 1.00 only in those with fasting blood glucose (FBG) below 100 mg/dL (0.979 [0.975 to 0.983]), and in lean individuals (body mass index [BMI] 18.5 to 23 kg/m²: 0.993 [0.988 to 0.998]; BMI <18.5 kg/m²: 0.918 [0.9 to 0.935]). CONCLUSION Height was inversely associated with diabetes risk in this nationwide study of Korean adults. This association did not differ by sex, and was significant in lean individuals and those with normal FBG levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the predictive value of body mass index (BMI) combined with waist circumference (WC) for new-onset nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This community-based prospective cohort study was conducted among 3501 T2DM patients without NAFLD recruited from the staff of Kailuan Company, who underwent routine physical examination in the year 2006 and 2007, and a total of 2920 subjects were included in the final analysis. According to the baseline BMI and WC, the subjects were divided into group A (with normal BMI and WC), group B (with normal BMI but elevated WC), group C (with elevated BMI but a normal WC) and group D (with elevated BMI and WC). The subjects in the 4 groups were followed for the occurrence of NAFLD by reviewing their reports of physical examinations during the periods of 2008-2009, 2010-2011, 2012-2013, 2014-2015 and 2016-2017. The cumulative incidence of NAFLD was compared across the 4 groups and Cox regression analysis was used to test the correlation of BMI and WC with new onset of NAFLD. RESULTS The cumulative incidence of NAFLD increased progressively in the 4 groups (50%, 66%, 68% and 77%, respectively). Cox regression analysis showed that compared with group A, groups B, C and D had increased risks of NAFLD after adjusting for age, gender and other risk factors, with HR values of 1.62, 1.98 and 2.47, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Elevated BMI and WC are both independent risk factors for NAFLD in type 2 diabetic patients, and the combination of BMI and WC has a greater predictive value for NAFLD than either of them alone.

Abstract
Background: Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is proposed as a valid measure of abdominal obesity and health risks in practice. The present study examined the profiles of weight status and blood pressure (BP) among young adults categorised by WHtR cut-offs.Methods: A total of 4226 college students (2107 males and 2119 females) aged 19-22 years participated in the study. The body mass index (BMI) cut-offs recommended by the Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC) were used to define underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity. The BMI and BP profiles within each WHtR category were examined.Results: For both males and females, 'the high WHtR group' (WHtR ≥ 0.5) had the highest, and 'the low WHtR group' (WHtR < 0.4) had the lowest BMI and BP levels. In the WHtR = 0.30-0.34 sub-group, 66.10% of males and 66.67% of females were underweight; in the WHtR ≥ 0.55 sub-group, 91.49% of males and 83.33% of females were obese; in the WHtR = 0.40-0.44 sub-group, 88.88% of males and 89.85% of females were normal weight. The prevalence of high BP in the WHtR < 0.5 group was 9.99% in males and 2.19% in females; the corresponding figures were 28.92% (males) and 14.06% (females) in the WHtR ≥ 0.5 group; the latter is significantly higher than the former (p < 0.01).Conclusion: Individuals with low WHtR were underweight and those with high WHtR were obese with high BP. Results from this study support WHtR as a simple and effective screening tool for abdominal obesity and high BP in practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review summarises the issues related to the measurement and interpretation of dietary intake in individuals with overweight and obesity, as well as identifies future research priorities. RECENT FINDINGS Some aspects of the assessment of dietary intake have improved through the application of technology-based methods and the use of dietary biomarkers. In populations with overweight and obesity, misreporting bias related to social desirability is a prominent issue. Future efforts should focus on combining technology-based dietary methods with the use of dietary biomarkers to help reduce and account for the impact of these biases. Future research will be important in terms of strengthening methods used in the assessment and interpretation of dietary intake data in the context of overweight and obesity.

AbstractObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to compare selected obesity indicators with comprehensive health status.DesignThe study employed a pooled cross-sectional design.SettingBMI, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and body fat percentage were considered as indirect obesity indicators. The Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS) was used as a composite indicator to comprehensively reflect obesity-related co-morbidities. Cohen’s κ coefficient was used to evaluate inter-measurement agreement for obesity. Conformity of indirect obesity indicators to the EOSS was assessed based on percentage agreement (proportion classified as obese and severely unhealthy as a result of obesity among the total sample), sensitivity (proportion classified as obese among individuals severely unhealthy as a result of obesity) and specificity (proportion classified as non-obese among fairly healthy individuals). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the sociodemographic factors most strongly associated with conformity.ParticipantsThe study included 17338 adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey conducted between July 2008 and May 2011.ResultsLevel of conformity to the EOSS was highest for WHtR (60·77 %) and lowest for BMI (35·96 %). WHtR and BMI had the highest sensitivity (53·7 %) and specificity (98·4 %), respectively. Predictability of conformity was lower among men for all indirect obesity indicators.ConclusionsWHtR has the greatest potential to identify individuals at risk of health problems due to obesity. Individual demographic factors must be considered in selecting the most appropriate obesity measurement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Air pollution causes many diseases and deaths. It is important to see how air pollution affects obesity, which is common worldwide. Therefore, we analyzed data from a smartphone application for intentional weight loss, and then we validated them. METHODS Our analysis was structured in two parts. We analyzed data from a cohort registered to a smartphone application in 10 large cities of the world and matched it with the annual pollution values. We validated these results using daily pollution data in United States and matching them with user information. Body mass index (BMI) variation between final and initial login time was considered as outcome in the first part, and daily BMI in the validation. We analyzed: daily calories intake, daily weight, daily physical activity, geographical coordinates, seasons, age, gender. Weather Underground application programming interface provided daily climatic values. Annual and daily values of particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 were extracted. In the first part of the analysis, we used 2,608 users and then 995 users located in United States. RESULTS Air pollution was highest in Seoul and lowest in Detroit. Users decreased BMI by 2.14 kg/m² in average (95% confidence interval, -2.26 to -2.04). From a multilevel model, PM10 (β=0.04, P=0.002) and PM2.5 (β=0.08, P<0.001) had a significant negative effect on weight loss when collected per year. The results were confirmed with the validation (βAQI*time=1.5×10⁻⁵; P<0.001) by mixed effects model. CONCLUSION This is the first study that shows how air pollution affects intentional weight loss applied on wider area of the world.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several anthropometric indices such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) have been examined as indicators of cardiovascular diseases, in both adults and children. However, the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is considered a better predictor for the detection of cardiovascular risk factors, than BMI. We investigated the association between the WHtR and incident hypertension. METHODS A total of 1718 participants, aged 39-72 years, were recruited in this longitudinal study. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to the development of hypertension during 2005-2008 (baseline) and 2008-2011 (follow-up). Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the WHtR as a significant predictor of hypertension. RESULTS During the 2.8 years of follow-up, 185 new cases of hypertension (10.8%) were diagnosed, with an incidence rate of approximately 4% per year. The WHtR was significantly higher in the participants who had developed hypertension than in those who had not (0.54 ± 0.05 vs. 0.51 ± 0.05, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, alcohol intake, regular exercise status, total cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure, at the baseline, the logistic regression analysis indicated that the participants with the highest quartile of the WHtR (WHtR≥0.54) were 4.51 times more likely to have hypertension than those with the lowest quartile (odds ratio 4.51; 95% confidence interval 2.41-8.43; p < .0001). The area under the curve for the WHtR, in identifying hypertension risk, was significantly greater than that for the BMI (p = 0.0233). CONCLUSION A positive association between WHtR and the incidence of hypertension was observed in Korean adults. The findings of the present community-based prospective study suggest that the WHtR may be a better predictor of incident hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the anthropometric characteristics of normoglycaemic individuals who subsequently developed hyperglycaemia, and to evaluate the validity of these measures to predict prediabetes and diabetes. DESIGN A community-based prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS In total, 1885 residents with euglycaemia at baseline from six communities were enrolled. SETTING Sichuan, southwest China. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES The incidences of prediabetes and diabetes were the primary outcomes. METHODS The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of all participants were measured at baseline and during follow-up. A 75 g glucose oral glucose tolerance test was conducted at each survey. RESULTS During a median of 3.00 (IQR: 2.92-4.17) years follow-up, the cumulative incidence of isolated impaired fasting glucose (IFG), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), IFG combined with IGT (IFG+IGT), and newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus (NDDM) were 8.44%, 18.14%, 8.06% and 13.79%, respectively. WHtR, BMI, WC and WHR were significantly different among subjects who subsequently progressed to isolated IFG or IGT, IFG+IGT or NDDM (p<0.05). The anthropometric characteristics of IFG+IGT subjects were similar to those of the NDDM population (p>0.005). All the baseline anthropometric measurements were useful for the prediction of future prediabetes and NDDM (p<0.05). The optimal thresholds for the four measurements were calculated for the prediction of hyperglycaemia, with a WHtR value of 0.52 performing best to identify isolated IFG or IGT, IFG+IGT and NDDM. CONCLUSIONS Anthropometric measures, especially WHtR, could be used to predict hyperglycaemia 3 years in advance. Distinct from isolated IFG and IGT, the individuals who developed combined IFG+IGT had identical anthropometric profiles to those who progressed to NDDM.

Abstract
We compared the predictive capability of weight, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), body roundness index (BRI), and a body shape index (ABSI) to identify incident hypertension, and to determine whether any of these indices may be used as a better single predictor of incident hypertension. A total of 1718 participants aged 39-72 years were collected in a longitudinal study. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate various anthropometric indices as significant predictors of hypertension. During 2.8 years of follow-up, 185 new cases of hypertension (10.8%) were reported. The BRI and ABSI were significantly higher in the participants who had developed hypertension than in those who had not (4.15 ± 1.01 vs. 3.57 ± 1.03, 0.80 ± 0.04 vs. 0.78 ± 0.05; respectively, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounding variables, logistic regression analysis indicated that participants within the highest quartile of WC and WHtR were 4.79 and 4.51 times more likely to have hypertension than those within the lowest quartile (OR 4.79, 95% CI 2.49-9.20 vs. OR 4.51, 95% CI 2.41-8.43, respectively, p < 0.0001); in contrast, no such correlation was found for BMI, WHR, BRI, and ABSI. WC (AUC: 0.672) showed a more powerful predictive ability for hypertension (p < 0.0001) than BMI (AUC: 0.623), and an equal predictive power for hypertension as WHtR (AUC: 0.662) and BRI (AUC: 0.662) in the general population. We concluded that WC and/or WHtR but not BMI, showed superior prediction capability compared to WHR, BRI, and ABSI, for determining the incidence of hypertension in a community-based prospective study.

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing worldwide. One-thirds of world population is suffering from the deleterious effects of excessive fat and adipose tissue in their body. At the same time, the average life expectancy is becoming higher and higher every decade. Therefore, living healthy and longer is the dream for everyone. Simply being obese is not the primary cause for the consequence of obesity; rather, the depot where the fat is accumulated, is the primary key for the deleterious effects of obesity. Results from historical research suggest that visceral fat increases the risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, not subcutaneous fat. Therefore, body mass index (BMI), which reflects body weight relative to height might not reflect the appropriate size of metabolic burden of fat in our body. In contrast, waist circumference, which reflects abdominal obesity, would mirror the metabolic burden of fat better than BMI. Visceral fat is the marker of ectopic fat accumulation. In this review, I will introduce my researches mainly involved in uncovering the clues to the link between metabolic health and cardiovascular disease.
