Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent findings associate asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) with the prognosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The purpose of the current study was to associate patients' lifestyle, sociodemographic, and somatometric characteristics with the time course of ADMA and SDMA concentrations in the serum of AMI patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the serum of 66 AMI patients, ADMA, SDMA, troponin T, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured upon hospital admission (<24 h) and on the 3rd day following. Lifestyle, sociodemographic, and somatometric characteristics were obtained through a questionnaire, filled on patient discharge. RESULTS ADMA concentrations on the 1st day positively correlated with daily reported hours of sleep (+0.497, P < 0.001) and delivery or eating out frequency (+0.285, P = 0.02), whereas it negatively correlated with reported physical condition (-0.304, P = 0.013). A personal history of hypertension indicated higher 1st-day ADMA concentration (1.818 vs 1.568, P = 0.042). Age positively correlated with 1st-day SDMA (+0.320, P = 0.009). All of the biomarker concentrations were reduced on the 3rd day measurements (P < 0.001). Self-reported lifetime minimum BMI positively correlated with either absolute (r = +0.366, P = 0.009) or percentage (r = +0.262, P = 0.045) ADMA reduction. A daily sleep in 5-8-h range was inversely correlated with percentage (-0.410, P = 0.001) or absolute (r = -0.369, P = 0.002) SDMA reduction. CONCLUSIONS Modifiable factors such as BMI, eating habits, physical condition, and sleep seem to affect the baseline levels or time course of ADMA and SDMA in AMI patients. Changes in these factors may affect AMI prognosis by altering dimethylarginine levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the prevalence of insomnia and insomnia symptoms and its association with metabolic parameters and glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/Embase until March 2018. STUDY SELECTION Included studies described prevalence of insomnia or insomnia symptoms and/or its association with metabolic parameters or glycemic control in adults with T2D. DATA EXTRACTION Data extraction was performed independently by 2 reviewers, on a standardized, prepiloted form. An adaptation of Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. DATA SYNTHESIS When possible, results were meta-analyzed using random-effects analysis and rated using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS A total of 11 329 titles/abstracts were screened and 224 were read full text in duplicate, of which 78 studies were included. The pooled prevalence of insomnia (symptoms) in people with T2D was 39% (95% confidence interval, 34-44) with I2 statistic of 100% (P < 0.00001), with a very low GRADE of evidence. Sensitivity analyses identified no clear sources of heterogeneity. Meta-analyses showed that in people with T2D, insomnia (symptoms) were associated with higher hemoglobin A1c levels (mean difference, 0.23% [0.1-0.4]) and higher fasting glucose levels (mean difference, 0.40 mmol/L [0.2-0.7]), with a low GRADE of evidence. The relative low methodological quality and high heterogeneity of the studies included in this meta-analysis complicate the interpretation of our results. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of insomnia (symptoms) is 39% (95% confidence interval, 34-44) in the T2D population and may be associated with deleterious glycemic control.

Sleep Quality and Cognitive Function in Type 1 Diabetes: Findings From the Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID). Alzheimer Dis Assoc Disord 2019; 34:18-24. Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE The objective was to examine the association between sleep quality and global and domain-specific cognitive function among older individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). METHODS We evaluated 695 individuals with T1D aged 60 years or above who participated in the baseline assessment of the Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID), which captured subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and global and domain-specific (language, executive function, episodic memory, and simple attention) cognitive function. Multivariable linear regressions estimated the associations between sleep quality quartiles and overall and domain-specific cognitive function adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, depressive symptoms, and severe hypoglycemic episodes. Sensitivity analyses examined the associations between aspects of sleep quality and global cognitive function. RESULTS The worst sleep quality quartile was associated with lower global cognition (β=-0.08; 95% confidence interval: -0.17, -0.01) and lower executive function (β=-0.17, 95% confidence interval: -0.30, -0.03) compared with the best quartile of sleep quality adjusting for demographics and comorbidities. Sleep quality was not associated with language, episodic memory, or simple attention. Sleep medications and daytime dysfunction were most strongly associated with global cognition. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that sleep quality may be a modifiable risk factor for global cognitive function and executive function among elderly individuals with T1D.

Abstract
Recent studies show that nitric oxide/asymmetric dimethylarginine/dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (NO/ADMA/DDAH) pathway may contribute to the development of sleep disorder. The objective of this study was to explore the inhibitory effect of procyanidin B2 from lotus seedpod (LSPC), a naturally occurring catechin compound, on insomnia and the mechanisms involved. The experiments were performed in brain from Sprague-Dawley rat control and insomniac rats treated or not with LSPC (15, 30, and 45 mg/kg, intragastrically) for 7 days. LSPC treatment reduced walking time and forelimb lifting-up frequency, cerebral levels of noradrenaline, glutamic acid, ADMA, sleep latency, and 8-isoprostane; increased sleep duration, cerebral concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptamine, γ-aminobutyric acid, and NO concomitantly with upregulated cerebral expression of DDAH 1, DDAH2, and neuronal NO synthases in insomniac rats. The present results suggest that LSPC may regulate NO/ADMA/DDAH pathway by inhibiting oxidative stress to treat insomnia in rats when sleep evaluation was achieved on the basis of behavioral criteria.

Abstract
AIMS Recent investigations have shown that dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) may be related to sleep disorder. The present study was conducted to test the hypnotic effect of jujubosides from Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZSJ) on sleep deprivation and the mechanisms involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10): two groups of sleep-deprived rats treated with SZSJ (10 or 30 mg/kg per day), sleep-deprived rats group, and control group. At the end of experiment, cerebral DDAH expression, cerebral asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) level, sleep parameters, behavioral activities, and cerebral neurotransmitters level brain was examined. KEY FINDINGS Six days after treatment, SZSJ treatment up-regulated cerebral expression of DDAH I and DDAH II concomitantly with elevated parameters of total sleep time, cerebral γ‑aminobutyric acid and 5‑hydroxytryptamine, and reduced values of forelimb lifting-up frequency and walking time, cerebral 8-isoprostane, ADMA, noradrenaline, and glutamic acid in sleep deprivation of rats. SIGNIFICANCE The present results suggest that SZSJ Protects against insomnia by a decrease in ADMA level and an improvement in DDAH production in sleep-deprived rats.

Abstract
Recent epidemiological studies have suggested that there is an association between glycemic control and sleep disturbances in patients with type 2 diabetes, but the extent is unclear. A systematic literature search was performed in nine electronic databases from inception until August 2015 without any language restriction. The search identified 20 studies (eight studies reporting duration of sleep and 15 studies evaluating sleep quality), and 15 were included in the meta-analysis. Short and long sleep durations were associated with an increased hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (weighted mean difference (WMD): 0.23% [0.10-0.36], short sleep; WMD: 0.13% [0.02-0.25], long sleep) compared to normal sleep, suggesting a U-shaped dose-response relationship. Similarly, poor sleep quality was associated with an increased HbA1c (WMD: 0.35% [0.12-0.58]). Results of this study suggest that amount of sleep as well as quality of sleep is important in the metabolic function of type 2 diabetes patients. Further studies are needed to identify for the potential causal role between sleep and altered glucose metabolism.
