Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Small Intestine: Pathogenesis and Clinical Features

An adding up of an exceptionally rare case report: Primary Squamous cell carcinoma of Jejunum from North India

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of lower gastrointestinal tract is a rare tumor and duodenum is the most common site of involvement. In addition, involvement of jejunum by SCC is further exceptionally rare, and only nominal cases are present world literature. Being a very infrequent finding, a clinician and a pathologist must be aware of this rare entity. Diagnosis requires histopathology along with clinico-radiological correlation since merely histopathology is unable to differentiate between primary and metastatic tumor. Treatment modality is totally different in primary and secondary tumor of lower gastrointestinal tract. Being an extremely rare case of primary SCC of jejunum in an elderly female makes it eligible to be acknowledged at the global platform of medical literature.

Rare squamous cell carcinoma of the jejunum causing perforated peritonitis: A case report

BACKGROUND

Adenocarcinoma has the highest incidence among malignant tumors of the small intestine (SI). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) often occurs in organs covered with squamous epithelium. Primary or metastatic SCC originating from the SI is very rare, with very few cases reported in the literature.

CASE SUMMARY

This case report involves a 69-year-old man who developed abdominal pain after lunch. After admission, an abdominal computed tomography scan revealed perforation of the alimentary canal and multiple abnormal low-density lesions in the liver. During laparotomy, an approximately 4 cm × 3 cm-sized solid tumor was found in the jejunum, located 30 cm from the Treitz ligament, with a perforation. An intestinal segment of approximately 15 cm was removed, including the perforated portion. The pathological result was SCC. In combination with liver imaging, a diagnosis of SI SCC with multiple liver metastases was considered. The patient died from hepatic failure 1 mo after the operation.

CONCLUSION

SI tumors are very rare compared to those originating in other digestive organs. Due to its insidious onset, the diagnosis of this disease is usually delayed. Clinicians must pay close attention to digestive symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain and melena.

Squamous cell and urothelial carcinomas in an ileal neobladder

Introduction

In cases of ileal neobladder following radical cystectomy for the treatment of bladder cancer, tumor development in the isolated gut segment is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of squamous cell and urothelial carcinomas in the ileal neobladder 23 years after radical cystectomy.

Case presentation

A 71‐year‐old man was referred to our hospital for further examination of a solitary tumor in an ileal neobladder. At the age of 48 years, he underwent radical cystectomy with ileal neobladder reconstruction. Transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed, and histopathological findings showed squamous cell carcinoma with high‐grade urothelial carcinoma.

Conclusion

To our knowledge, this is the first report of squamous cell and urothelial carcinomas in an ileal neobladder. While secondary tumor development in an ileal neobladder is rare, it is a cause for concern as a late postoperative adverse event. Therefore, long‐term follow‐ups are recommended.
