Electroactive Polymer-Based Composites for Artificial Muscle-like Actuators: A Review

Unlike traditional actuators, such as piezoelectric ceramic or metallic actuators, polymer actuators are currently attracting more interest in biomedicine due to their unique properties, such as light weight, easy processing, biodegradability, fast response, large active strains, and good mechanical properties. They can be actuated under external stimuli, such as chemical (pH changes), electric, humidity, light, temperature, and magnetic field. Electroactive polymers (EAPs), called ‘artificial muscles’, can be activated by an electric stimulus, and fixed into a temporary shape. Restoring their permanent shape after the release of an electrical field, electroactive polymer is considered the most attractive actuator type because of its high suitability for prosthetics and soft robotics applications. However, robust control, modeling non-linear behavior, and scalable fabrication are considered the most critical challenges for applying the soft robotic systems in real conditions. Researchers from around the world investigate the scientific and engineering foundations of polymer actuators, especially the principles of their work, for the purpose of a better control of their capability and durability. The activation method of actuators and the realization of required mechanical properties are the main restrictions on using actuators in real applications. The latest highlights, operating principles, perspectives, and challenges of electroactive materials (EAPs) such as dielectric EAPs, ferroelectric polymers, electrostrictive graft elastomers, liquid crystal elastomers, ionic gels, and ionic polymer–metal composites are reviewed in this article.

External Stress-Free Reversible Multiple Shape Memory Polymers

The present work is focused on developing external stress-free two-way triple shape memory polymers (SMPs). Accordingly, a series of innovative approaches are proposed for the material design and preparation. Polyurethane prepolymers carrying crystalline polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) as the switching phases are respectively synthesized in advance and then cross-linked to produce the target material. The stepwise method is believed to be conducive to manipulation of the relative contribution of PCL and PTMEG. Moreover, the chain extender, 2-amino-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-6-methylpyrimidin-4-ol (UPy), is incorporated to establish hydrogen bonds among the macromolecules. By straightforward stretching treatment at different temperatures, the hydrogen bond networks are successfully converted into an internal stress provider, which overcomes the challenge of stress relaxation of the melted low melting temperature polymer (i.e., PTMEG) and increases the efficiency of stress transfer. Meanwhile, the contraction force of the switching phases is tuned to match the internal tensile stress. As a result, the internal stress provider can closely collaborate with melting/recrystallization of the crystalline domains, leading to the repeated multiple shape memory effects. The cross-linked polyurethane is thus able to reversibly morph among three shapes and displays its potentials as soft robot and actuator. The strategy reported here has the advantages of easily accessible raw materials, simple reaction, and facile programing/deprograming/reprograming, so that it possesses wide applicability.

[c2]Daisy Chain Rotaxanes as Molecular Muscles

Bistable [ c2]daisy chain rotaxanes represent a particularly intriguing class of interlocked molecules that can produce internal sliding movements with a net contraction or extension at the single-molecule level. These nanometric motions show some analogies with the sliding motions of actin and myosin filaments in sarcomeres, and this is why [ c2]daisy chain rotaxanes have been also named as “molecular muscles,” as their first synthesis in 2000. In this minireview, the authors discuss the recent history of these molecules, their modular chemical structures, and the various synthetic pathways described in the literature to access them. The authors also detail how their internal motions can be controlled and characterized by a number of chemical and physical tools. The authors finally show that their integration within polymers and materials can give access to synchronized motions and amplifications up to the macroscopic scale. Overall, the numerous examples that have been described in the literature to date demonstrate that this family of molecules has already strongly influenced the entire field of research on artificial molecular machines, and has the potential to be implemented as actuators working at all scales, from nanometric-switchable devices to mechanically active soft matter materials.

Biopolymer-based strategies in the design of smart medical devices and artificial organs

Advances in regenerative medicine and in modern biomedical therapies are fast evolving and set goals causing an upheaval in the field of materials science. This review discusses recent developments involving the use of biopolymers as smart materials, in terms of material properties and stimulus-responsive behavior, in the presence of environmental physico-chemical changes. An overview on the transformations that can be triggered in natural-based polymeric systems (sol-gel transition, polymer relaxation, cross-linking, and swelling) is presented, with specific focus on the benefits these materials can provide in biomedical applications.
