Flushing control strategies to improve the stability of a biogas slurry drip irrigation system: Behavioral characteristics and mechanisms

Biogas slurry drip irrigation can mitigate environmental pollution and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers to enable sustainable development. However, the stability of the biogas slurry drip irrigation system (BSDIS) is disrupted by emitter clogging; hence, it is essential to explore the flushing control strategy of BSDIS. By means of combining actual measurement and simulation, this study investigates the BSDIS stability based on the three technical parameters of the flushing control strategy. Appropriate flushing control strategies can improve system stability and cause spatial differences on the drip irrigation tape. Under various flushing control strategies, the system stability primarily undergoes delays, sensitivity, and ineffectiveness of flushing with time. Compared with the without flushing and emitter outlet downward-oriented treatment, the optimal flushing combination (the high frequency flushing + emitter outlet upward-oriented treatment) reduces the emitter clogging content by approximately 70.97% and increases system stability by 189.1%. In the internal hydrodynamics, the laying direction of emitters does not change the movement characteristics of water flow, although the clogging particles do not completely follow the water flow, with some particles settling owing to gravity, thereby clotting the emitters. When clogging occurs, the increase in flushing speed is conducive to the increase in turbulent kinetic energy on the inlet surface of the emitter, which facilitate the flushing of clogged substances. This study proposes optimal flushing strategy parameters along with a new management mode for the waste liquid represented by biogas slurry.

Environmental and molecular approach to dye industry waste degradation by the ascomycete fungus Nectriella pironii

Textile industry effluents and landfill leachate contain chemicals such as dyes, heavy metals and aromatic amines characterized by their mutagenicity, cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity. The aim of the present study was investigation of the ascomycete fungus N. pironii isolated from urban postindustrial textile green space for its ability to grow and retain metabolic activity in the presence of the dye industry waste. Research focused mainly on dyes, heavy metals and aromatic amines, which had been detected in landfill leachate via HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Presence of all tested compounds as well as leachate in the growth medium clearly favored the growth of fungal biomass. Only slight growth limitation was observed in the presence of 50 mg L-1 o-tolidine. The fungus eliminated o-tolidine as well as dyes at all tested concentrations. The presence of metals slightly influenced the decolorization of the azo dyes; however, it was still similar to 90%. During fungal growth, o-tolidine was hydroxylated and/or converted to toluidine and its derivatives. Laccase and cytochrome P450 involvement in this process has been revealed. The results presented in the paper provide a valuable background for the development of a fungus-based system for the elimination of toxic pollutants generated by the textile industry.

Phytochemicals and in vitro anti-apoptotic properties of ethanol and hot water extracts of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) peel biogas slurry following anaerobic degradation

Background

Wastes emanating from cassava (Manihot Esculenta Crantz) processing in African countries significantly contribute to environmental pollution, besides, such toxic wastes contribute to greenhouse gas emission. Although cassava peel has been successfully used as a raw material in mushroom cultivation, feedstock for livestock, biogas production but the bio-transformed products recovered from the anaerobic digestion of cassava wastes, especially the peels have often been overlooked. Therefore, this research aimed at quantifying the secondary metabolites in the slurry recovered from ethanol and hot water extraction of cassava peel subjected to biogas production, in vitro, for anti-apoptotic properties.

Methods

Fresh cassava peels were allowed to ferment anaerobically to produce three states of matter; gas, solid, and liquid/slurry. The slurry was extracted using 95 % ethanol and 100 oC hot water to obtain crude extracts, which were then subjected to anti-apoptotic screening using the mitochondrial swelling assay. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts was done using standard methods. Further characterization of the crude extracts was done by FTIR for the chemical elucidation of the functional groups present.

Results

The qualitative phytoconstituents revealed that the slurry extracts are naturally enriched with alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, and saponins. The infrared spectrum of the crude extracts revealed the presence of hydroxyl, alkane, carboxyl groups in the ethanol extract, and hydroxyl, alkene, amide, carbonyl groups in the hot water extract. In the presence and absence of exogenous Ca2+, both extracts of the slurry induced liver mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening albeit at low amplitude swelling as the mean absorbance was less than one (at 540 nm).

Conclusions

Based on these results obtained, the crude extracts of cassava peel biogas slurry have been proven to possess bioactive compounds that could induce liver mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, in vitro.

Isolation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in biogas digestate and their susceptibility to antibiotics

Antibiotics are widely used to prevent and treat diseases and promote animal growth in the livestock industry, and therefore antibiotic residues can end up in biogas digestate from processes treating animal manure (AM) and food waste (FW). These digestates represent a potential source of spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) when used as fertilisers. This study evaluated AMR risks associated with biogas digestates from two processes, using AM and FW as substrate, by isolation and identification of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and testing their susceptibility to different antibiotics. ARB from the digestates were isolated by selective plating. The antibiotic susceptibility profile of isolates was determined using ampicillin, ceftazidime, meropenem, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, gentamicin or sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, representing different antibiotic classes with differing mechanisms of action. In total, 30 different bacterial species belonging to seven genera were isolated and classified. Bacillus and closely related genera, including Paenibacillus, Lysinibacillus and Brevibacillus, were the dominant ARB in both digestates. Most of the ARB strains isolated were non-pathogenic and some were even known to be beneficial to plant growth. However, some were potentially pathogenic, such as an isolate identified as Bacillus cereus. Many of the isolated species showed multi resistance and the AM digestate and FW digestate both contain bacterial species resistant to all antibiotics tested here, except gentamicin. A higher level of resistance was displayed by the FW isolates, which may indicate higher antibiotic pressure in FW compared with AM digestate. Overall, the results indicate a risk of AMR spread when these digestates are used as fertiliser. However, most of the ARB identified are species commonly found in soil, where AMR in many cases is abundant already, so the contribution of digestate-based fertiliser to the spread of AMR may still be very limited.
