Physiological Responses of Two Varieties of Common Bean (Phaseolus VulgarisL.) to Foliar Application of Silver Nanoparticles

Ozone-induced oxidative stress alleviation by biogenic silver nanoparticles and ethylenediurea in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) under high ambient ozone

Ground-level ozone (O3) is the most phytotoxic secondary air pollutant in the atmosphere, severely affecting crop yields worldwide. The role of nanoparticles (NP) in the alleviation of ozone-induced yield losses in crops is not known. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of biogenicB-AgNPs on the mitigation of ozone-induced phytotoxicity in mung bean and compared its results with ethylenediurea (EDU) for the first time. Two mung bean cultivars (Vigna radiata L., Cv. SML-668 and PDM-139) were foliar sprayed with weekly applications of B-AgNPs (0 = control, 10 and 25 ppm) and EDU (0 = control, 200 and 300 ppm) until maturation phase. Morphological, physiological, enzymatic, and non-enzymatic antioxidant data were collected 30 and 60 days after germination (DAG). The mean O3 and AOT40 values (8 h day-1) during the cultivation period were approximately 52 ppb and 4.4 ppm.h, respectively. More biomass was accumulated at the vegetative phase due to the impact of B-AgNPs and EDU, and more photosynthates were transported to the reproductive phase, increasing yield. We observed that the 10 ppm B-AgNPs treatment had a more noticeable impact on yield parameters and lower Ag accumulation in seeds for both cultivars. Specifically, SML-668 cultivar treated with 10 ppm B-AgNPs (SN1) showed greater increases in seed weight plant-1 (124.97%), hundred seed weight (33.45%), and harvest index (37.53%) in comparison to control. Our findings suggest that B-AgNPs can enhance growth, biomass, yield, and seed quality, and can improve mung bean ozone tolerance. Therefore, B-AgNPs may be a promising protectant for mung bean.

Copper and Silver Nanoparticle Seed Priming and Foliar Spray Modulate Plant Growth and Thrips Infestation in Capsicum spp

Nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to improve plant health and secondary metabolite production. In the present study, three different NPs, i.e., Ag, Cu, and Cu-Ag NPs were produced in the range from 25 to 86 nm, with zeta potentials ranging from -28.8 to -38.5 mV. The synthesized NPs were used for seed priming and foliar spray on three varieties of Capsicum annuum. L, i.e., Arka Sweta (AS), Arka Meghana (AM), and Arka Harita (AH) plants grown under greenhouse conditions. Seed priming at various concentrations of NPs (1, 10, 20 ppm) enhanced the seed germination (96%), seedling vigor index (2494-3112.66), seedling length (6-49%), and biomass (46%) of 45 days old Arka Meghana seedlings. Additionally, all plant tissues accumulated significantly higher amounts of chlorophyll (51-142%), carotenoids (23-94.2%), total phenolic content (73%), and total flavonoid content (57%), compared with the control (p ≤ 0.05). The foliar spray of NPs (20-100 ppm) has a protective effect on the chili plants against thrips infestation (30-76%). The foliar spray enhanced chlorophyll (15-62%), carotenoids (15-50%), total phenolic content (20-62%), total flavonoid content (64-99%), reducing sugars (15-97%), total antioxidant activity (15-142%), ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (15-109%), DPPH (129-54 mg mL-1), and capsaicinoids (capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin) (82-128%). This study illustrates that Ag, Cu, and Cu-Ag NPs suppress thrips infestation and proliferation with enhanced plant growth and biochemical activity, which is inversely proportional to the NP size. Chemical NPs play a crucial role in the economic significance of chili plants, offering a promising avenue for developing pesticides to effectively combat thrips infestation. This advancement holds great potential in enhancing the overall agronomic productivity of the chili crops.

Silver Bionanocomposites as Active Food Packaging: Recent Advances & Future Trends Tackling the Food Waste Crisis

Food waste is a pressing global challenge leading to over $1 trillion lost annually and contributing up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Extensive study has been directed toward the use of active biodegradable packaging materials to improve food quality, minimize plastic use, and encourage sustainable packaging technology development. However, this has been achieved with limited success, which can mainly be attributed to poor material properties and high production costs. In the recent literature, the integration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has shown to improve the properties of biopolymer, prompting the development of bionanocomposites. Furthermore, the antibacterial properties of AgNPs against foodborne pathogens leads towards food shelf-life improvement and provides a route towards reducing food waste. However, few reviews have analyzed AgNPs holistically throughout a portfolio of biopolymers from an industrial perspective. Hence, this review critically analyses the antibacterial, barrier, mechanical, thermal, and water resistance properties of AgNP-based bionanocomposites. These advanced materials are also discussed in terms of food packaging applications and assessed in terms of their performance in enhancing food shelf-life. Finally, the current barriers towards the commercialization of AgNP bionanocomposites are critically discussed to provide an industrial action plan towards the development of sustainable packaging materials to reduce food waste.

Impact of magnetic field on the translocation of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) in barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The effect and contribution of an external magnetic field (MF) on the uptake and translocation of nanoparticles (NPs) in plants have been investigated in this study. Barley was treated with iron oxide NPs (Fe3O4, 500 mg/L, 50-100 nm) and grown under various MF strengths (20, 42, 125, and 250 mT). The root-to-shoot translocation of NPs was assessed using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Additionally, plant phenological parameters, such as germination, protein and chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic and nutritional status, were examined. The results demonstrated that the external MF significantly enhances the uptake of NPs through the roots. The uptake was higher at lower MF strengths (20 and 42 mT) than at higher MF strengths (125 and 250 mT). The root and shoot iron (Fe) contents were approximately 2.5-3-fold higher in the 250 mT application compared to the control. Furthermore, the MF treatments significantly increased micro-elements such as Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo, and B (P < 0.005). This effect could be attributed to the disruption of cell membranes at the root tip cells caused by both the MF and NPs. Moreover, the MF treatments improved germination rates by 28%, total protein content, and photosynthetic parameters. These findings show that magnetic field application helps the effective transport of magnetic NPs, which could be essential for NPs-mediated drug delivery, plant nutrition, and genetic transformation applications.

Ziziphus spina-christi extract-stabilized novel silver nanoparticle synthesis for combating Fusarium oxysporum-causing pepper wilt disease: in vitro and in vivo studies

The novelty of the present study is studying the ability of aqueous Ziziphus spina-christi leaves' extract (ZSCE) to produce eco-friendly and cost-effective silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) against Fusarium wilt disease. Phytochemical screening of ZSCE by HPLC showed that they contain important antimicrobial substances such as Rutin, Naringin, Myricetin, Quercetin, Kaempferol, Hesperidin, Syringeic, Eugenol, Pyrogallol, Gallic and Ferulic. Characterization methods reveal a stable Ag NPs with a crystalline structure, spherical in shape with average particle size about 11.25 nm. ZSCE and Ag NPs showed antifungal potential against F. oxysporum at different concentrations with MIC of Ag NPs as 0.125 mM. Ag NPs treatment was the most effective, as it gave the least disease severity (20.8%) and the highest protection rate (75%). The application of ZSCE or Ag NPs showed a clear recovery, and its effectiveness was not limited for improving growth and metabolic characteristics only, but also inducing substances responsible for defense against pathogens and activating plant immunity (such as increasing phenols and strong expression of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase as well as isozymes). Owing to beneficial properties such as antifungal activity, and the eco-friendly approach of cost and safety, they can be applied in agricultural field as novel therapeutic nutrients.

Biological synthesis of hybrid silver nanoparticles by Periploca aphylla Dcne. From nanotechnology to biotechnology applications

Nanotechnology is one of the advanced technologies that have almost universal implications in every field of science. The importance is due to the unique properties of nanoparticles; however, green synthesized nanoparticles are considered eco-friendly. The current project was rationalized to prepare green-synthesized biogenic Periploca aphylla Dcne. silver nanoparticles (Pe-AgNPs) and poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate coated AgNPs nanocomposites (PEGMA-AgNPs) with higher potential for their application in plant tissue culture for enhancing the biomass of Stevia rebaudiana calli. The increased biomass accumulation (17.61 g/3 plates) was observed on a medium containing virgin Pe-AgNPs 40th days after incubation, while the maximum increase was found by supplementing virgin Pe-AgNPs and PEGMA capped AgNPs (19.56 g/3 plates), compared with control (12.01 g/3 plates). In this study, PEGMA capped AgNPs supplementation also induced the maximum increase in total phenolics content (2.46 mg GAE/g-FW), total flavonoids content (3.68 mg QE/g-FW), SOD activity (53.78 U/ml protein), GSH content (139.75 μg/g FW), antioxidant activity (54.3 mg AAE/g FW), FRAP (54 mg AAE/g FW), and DPPH (76.3%) in S. rebaudiana calli compared with the control. It was concluded that virgin Pe-AgNPs and PEGMA capped AgNPs (hybrid polymer) are potent growth regulator agents and elicitors that can be exploited in the biotechnology field for growth promotion and induction of essential bioactive compounds and secondary metabolites from various commercially important and medicinally valuable plants such as S. rebaudiana without laborious field cultivation.

Biopolymeric Nanocarriers for Nutrient Delivery and Crop Biofortification

Driven by the possibility of precise transformational change in nutrient-enrichment technology to meet global food demand, advanced nutrient delivery strategies have emerged to pave the path toward success for nutrient enrichment in edible parts of crops through bioderived nanocarriers with increased productivity. Slow and controlled release of nutrient carrier materials influences the nutrient delivery rate in soil and in the edible parts of crops with a sluggish nutrient delivery to enhance their availability in roots by minimizing nutrient loss. With a limited understanding of the nutrient delivery mechanism in soil and the edible parts of crops, it is envisaged to introduce nutrient-enrichment technology for nutrient delivery that minimizes environmental impact due to its biodegradable nature. This article attempts to analyze the possible role of the cellulose matrix for nutrient release and the role of cellulose nanocomposites and nanofibers. We have proposed a few cellulose derived biofortificant materials as nutrient carriers, such as (1) nanofibers, (2) polymer-nanocellulose-clay composites, (3) silk-fibroin derived nanocarriers, and (4) carboxymethyl cellulose. An effort is undertaken to describe the research need by linking a biopolymer derived nanocarrier for crop growth regulation and experimental nitrogen release analysis. We have finally provided a perspective on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) for microcage based nutrient loading ability. This article aims to explain why biopolymer derived nutrient carriers are the alternative candidate for alleviating nutrient deficiency challenges which are involved in focusing the nutrient delivery profile of biopolymers and promising biofortification of crops.

Activity of Fusarium oxysporum-Based Silver Nanoparticles on Candida spp. Oral Isolates

Candida spp. resistant to commercially available antifungals are often isolated from patients with oral candidiasis, a situation that points to the need for the development of new therapies. Thus, we evaluated the activity of Fusarium oxysporum-based silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on Candida spp. isolated from denture stomatitis lesions. Candida isolates were molecularly identified and submitted to susceptibility assays using AgNPs and commercial fungicides. The interference on biofilm formation and the mechanisms of action of AgNPs on Candida spp. were also investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the morphology of AgNP-treated Candida. Candida albicans was the most frequent species isolated from denture stomatitis cases. All Candida spp. were susceptible to AgNPs at low concentrations, except Candida parapsilosis. AgNPs caused surface damage, cell disruption, and biofilm formation inhibition. The ergosterol supplementation protected C. albicans against the AgNP action. AgNPs are effective against Candida spp. and can be faced as a promising new therapeutic agent against oral candidiasis.

The Applications of Nanotechnology in Crop Production

With the frequent occurrence of extreme climate, global agriculture is confronted with unprecedented challenges, including increased food demand and a decline in crop production. Nanotechnology is a promising way to boost crop production, enhance crop tolerance and decrease the environmental pollution. In this review, we summarize the recent findings regarding innovative nanotechnology in crop production, which could help us respond to agricultural challenges. Nanotechnology, which involves the use of nanomaterials as carriers, has a number of diverse applications in plant growth and crop production, including in nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanosensors and nanobiotechnology. The unique structures of nanomaterials such as high specific surface area, centralized distribution size and excellent biocompatibility facilitate the efficacy and stability of agro-chemicals. Besides, using appropriate nanomaterials in plant growth stages or stress conditions effectively promote plant growth and increase tolerance to stresses. Moreover, emerging nanotools and nanobiotechnology provide a new platform to monitor and modify crops at the molecular level.

Critical Review: Role of Inorganic Nanoparticle Properties on Their Foliar Uptake and in Planta Translocation

There is increasing pressure on global agricultural systems due to higher food demand, climate change, and environmental concerns. The design of nanostructures is proposed as one of the economically viable technological solutions that can make agrochemical use (fertilizers and pesticides) more efficient through reduced runoff, increased foliar uptake and bioavailability, and decreased environmental impacts. However, gaps in knowledge about the transport of nanoparticles across the leaf surface and their behavior in planta limit the rational design of nanoparticles for foliar delivery with controlled fate and limited risk. Here, the current literature on nano-objects deposited on leaves is reviewed. The different possible foliar routes of uptake (stomata, cuticle, trichomes, hydathodes, necrotic spots) are discussed, along with the paths of translocation, via the phloem, from the leaf to the end sinks (mature and developing tissues, roots, rhizosphere). This review details the interplays between morphological constraints, environmental stimuli, and physical-chemical properties of nanoparticles influencing their fate, transformation, and transport after foliar deposition. A metadata analysis from the existing literature highlighted that plant used for testing nanoparticle fate are most often dicotyledon plants (75%), while monocotyledons (as cereals) are less considered. Correlations on parameters calculated from the literature indicated that nanoparticle dose, size, zeta potential, and affinity to organic phases correlated with leaf-to-sink translocation, demonstrating that targeting nanoparticles to specific plant compartments by design should be achievable. Correlations also showed that time and plant growth seemed to be drivers for in planta mobility, parameters that are largely overlooked in the literature. This review thus highlights the material design opportunities and the knowledge gaps for targeted, stimuli driven deliveries of safe nanomaterials for agriculture.

Current and future perspectives on the use of nanofertilizers for sustainable agriculture: the case of phosphorus nanofertilizer

Over the last century, the demand for food resources has been continuously increasing with the rapid population growth. Therefore, it is critically important to adopt sustainable farming practices that can enhance crop production without the excessive use of fertilizers. In this regard, there is a growing interest in the use of nanomaterials for improving plant nutrition as an alternative to traditional chemical or mineral fertilizers. Using this technology, the efficiency of micro- and macro-nutrients in plants can increase. Various nanomaterials have been successfully applied in agricultural production, compared to conventional fertilizers. Among the major plant nutrients, phosphorus (P) is the least accessible since most farmlands are frequently P deficient. Hence, P use efficiency should be maximized to conserve the resource base and maintain agricultural productivity. This review summarizes the current research and the future possibilities of nanotechnology in the biofortification of plant nutrition, with a focus on P fertilizers. In addition, it covers the challenges, environmental impacts, and toxic effects that have been explored in the area of nanotechnology to improve crop production. The potential uses and benefits of nanoparticle-based fertilizers in precision and sustainable agriculture are also discussed.

Positive effects of metallic nanoparticles on plants: Overview of involved mechanisms

Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are considered as potential agents for agriculture as fertilizers, growth enhancers and pesticides. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that are responsible for their effects is important. Various studies demonstrated that the application of nontoxic concentrations can promote seed germination, enhance plant growth and increase the yield. Moreover, NPs can be used to protect plants from environmental impacts such as salt or drought stress and diminish accumulation and toxicity of heavy metals. NPs can serve as a source of micronutrients (e.g. ZnO, iron- and manganese-based NPs), thus increasing fitness and helps plants to cope with stress conditions. TiO₂ and iron-based NPs are able to delay senescence and speed-up cell division via changes in phytohormonal levels. The application of some NPs can promote the activity of enzymes such as amylase, nitrate reductase, phosphatase, phytase and carbonic anhydrases, which are involved in metabolism and nutrient acquisition. E.g. ZnO and TiO₂ NPs can stimulate chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthetic activity. Iron-based and CeO₂ NPs enhance stomata opening resulting in better gas exchange and CO₂ assimilation rate. NPs can also modulate oxidative stress by the stimulation of the antioxidant enzymes such peroxidases and superoxide dismutase. However, the knowledge about the fate, transformation, and accumulation of NPs in the environment and organisms is needed prior to their use in agriculture to avoid negative environmental impacts. Higher or lower toxicity of various NPs was established for microorganisms, plants or animals. In this overview, we focused on the possible mechanisms of Ag, ZnO, TiO₂, Fe-based, CeO₂, Al₂O₃, and manganese-based NPs responsible for their positive effects on plants.

Characterization and Evaluation of Multiple Biological Activities of Silver Nanoparticles Fabricated from Dragon Tongue Bean Outer Peel Extract

BACKGROUND

The dragon tongue beans are a legume belonging to the Fabaceae family, are rich in protein, starch, fiber, and other micronutrients that have numerous health-promoting benefits. Its peel commonly the waste parts also contains lots of bioactive compounds.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In the current research, dragon tongue bean peels (DtbP) extract is tested for the existence of phytochemicals. Ag nanoparticles are biosynthesized using DtbP extract. The generated DtbP silver nanoparticle characterization was accomplished using UV-Vis spectral analysis, FTIR spectral analysis, SEM analysis, EDX analysis, XRD analysis, zeta potential, and DLS study. Furthermore, comparative assessment on multi-biological activities of the biosynthesized Ag nanoparticles was accomplished by employing cytotoxicity (inhibition against HepG2 cancer cells), antidiabetic (α-glucosidase inhibition assay), and antioxidant (free-radical scavenging) analysis.

RESULTS

The characterization result of the DtbP-AgNPs demonstrated that the AgNPs synthesized within 24 h. The AgNPs are nearly spherical. The biological effect assay of AgNPs displayed that DtbP-AgNPs is having significant cytotoxicity, antidiabetic, and moderate antioxidant effect. This study results as a whole report the biosynthesis of DtbP-AgNPs utilizing the legume dragon tongue bean waste peel and assessment of their multiple biological activities. The synthesized DtbP-AgNPs could serve as a potential candidate in the pharmaceutical industries in the formulation of drugs for the treatment of several medical ailments concerning cancer, diabetes, etc.

Nanostructured Mg substituted Mn-Zn ferrites: A magnetic recyclable catalyst for outstanding photocatalytic and antimicrobial potentials

With recently increasing the environmental problems and expected energy crisis, it is necessary to synthesis a low-cost, efficient, and UV-light responsive photocatalyst for contaminants' degradation. The nanostructured spinel ferrite Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-xMg_xFe₂O₄ NPs (x = 0.0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375 and 0.50) were synthesized via the sol-gel method. The crystallite size was lied in nano regime ranging from 21.8 to 36.5 nm. The surface chemical composition of the Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-xMg_xFe₂O₄ NPs was investigated via XPS analysis. Mossbauer spectra showed that the peaks were shifted to higher values of the maximum magnetic field as the Mg content increased, indicating that the crystallinity is enhanced while the crystal size is decreased. Also, various parameters such as the photocatalyst dose, dyes concentration, pH, point of zero charge, and the metals leaching were studied. The point of zero charge (PZC) has found at pH = 2.38. The Mn_0.5Zn_0.125Mg_0.375Fe₂O₄ NPs showed an excellent UV-assisted photocatalytic activity against Chloramine T (90 % removal efficiency) and Rhodamine B (95 % removal efficiency) after 80 min as compared to pure Mn_0.5Zn_0.5Fe₂O₄ ferrite NPs. Besides, it a recyclable catalyst at least four times with a negligible reduction of photocatalytic activity with slight elements leaching. Furthermore, the Mn_0.5Zn_0.25Mg_0.25Fe₂O₄ NPs showed a high antimicrobial activity towards pathogenic bacteria and yeats.

Impact of foliar application of some metal nanoparticles on antioxidant system in oakleaf lettuce seedlings

BACKGROUND

Nanoparticles (NPs) serve various industrial and household purposes, and their increasing use creates an environmental hazard because of their uncontrolled release into ecosystems. An important aspect of the risk assessment of NPs is to understand their interactions with plants. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Au (10 and 20 ppm), Ag, and Pt (20 and 40 ppm) NPs on oakleaf lettuce, with particular emphasis on plant antioxidative mechanisms. Nanoparticles were applied once on the leaves of 2-week-old lettuce seedlings, after next week laboratory analyses were performed.

RESULTS

The antioxidant potential of oakleaf lettuce seedlings sprayed with metal NPs at different concentrations was investigated. Chlorophylls, fresh and dry weight were also determined. Foliar exposure of the seedlings to metal NPs did not affect ascorbate peroxidase activity, total peroxidase activity increased after Au-NPs treatment, but decreased after applying Ag-NPs and Pt-NPs. Both concentrations of Au-NPs and Pt-NPs tested caused an increase in glutathione (GSH) content, while no NPs affected L-ascorbic acid content in the plants. Ag-NPs and Pt-NPs applied as 40 ppm solution increased total phenolics content by 17 and 15%, respectively, compared to the control. Carotenoids content increased when Ag-NPs and Au-NPs (20 and 40 ppm) and Pt-NPs (20 ppm) were applied. Plants treated with 40 ppm of Ag-NPs and Pt-NPs showed significantly higher total antioxidant capacity and higher concentration of chlorophyll a (only for Ag-NPs) than control. Pt-NPs applied as 40 ppm increased fresh weight and total dry weight of lettuce shoot.

CONCLUSIONS

Results showed that the concentrations of NPs applied and various types of metal NPs had varying impact on the antioxidant status of oakleaf lettuce. Alteration of POX activity and in biosynthesis of glutathione, total phenolics, and carotenoids due to metal NPs showed that tested nanoparticles can act as stress stimuli. However, judging by the slight changes in chlorophyll concentrations and in the fresh and dry weight of the plants, and even based on the some increases in these traits after M-NPs treatment, the stress intensity was relatively low, and the plants were able to cope with its negative effects.

Gentamicin-Assisted Mycogenic Selenium Nanoparticles Synthesized Under Gamma Irradiation for Robust Reluctance of Resistant Urinary Tract Infection-Causing Pathogens

The purpose of this research is to compare and enhance the antimicrobial and antibiofilm potentials of the biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) produced by cost-effective and eco-friendly green methods. The synthesis of Se NPs is described in this manuscript by two different methods: a biogenic process using Penicillium chrysogenum filtrate and by utilizing gentamicin drug (CN) following the application of gamma irradiation. Se NPs were characterized by UV-Vis., HRTM, FTIR, XRD, DLS, SEM, and EDX mapping technique. Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of the synthesized Se NPs were investigated against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and yeast causing severe diseases such as urinary tract infection (UTI). The biogenic Se NPs exhibited an absorption peak at 435.0 nm while Se NPs-CN showed an absorption peak at 350.0 nm which is related to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Data obtained from HRTEM, SEM/mapping, and XRD analysis confirmed the mono-dispersion and crystalline nature of the prepared samples with an average diameter of 33.84 nm and 22.37 nm for the mycogenic Se NPs and Se NPs-CN, respectively. The synthesized Se NPs-CN possesses an encouraging antimicrobial potential with respect to the biogenic Se NPs against all examined UTI-causing microbes. Remarkably, Se NPs-CN showed antimicrobial potential toward Candida albicans with a zone of Inhibition (ZOI) recorded at 26.0 mm, 23.0 mm ZOI for Escherichia coli and 20.0 mm ZOI against Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the incorporated Se NPs-CN displayed an enhanced percentage of biofilm inhibition of 88.67%, 87.93%, and 85.20% against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli, respectively. Accordingly, the novelty of the present research involves the green synthesis of mono-dispersed Se NPs and combining the synergistic potential of CN with Se NPs for potential biomedical, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic applications especially in the treatment of UTI. Controlled release micronutrient fertilizers for precision agriculture - A review

The rapid growth of the global population and the resulting need to ensure sufficient food safety in highly productive agricultural practices. Intensive cultivation of plants contributes to the impoverishment of soils and thus forces farmers to apply intensive fertilization with microelements. Precise fertilization techniques are the future of agriculture, in which nutrients are supplied in controlled way with minimized losses to the environment, caused by leaching to groundwater. Kinetics of nutrients release should be thus adjusted to plant requirements and kinetics of uptake by the plant. The paper presents current achievements in the field of fertilizers with controlled release of microelements, which, apart from the main fertilizer components, are also very significant for proper plant growth. Fertilizers are divided into four basic groups, which include low-solubility fertilizers, fertilizers with external coating, bio-based and nano-fertilizers. Despite structural differences, all groups show properties of controlled microelement release. The paper presents new fertilization technologies with consideration of their influence on the environment.

Factorial design-optimized and gamma irradiation-assisted fabrication of selenium nanoparticles by chitosan and Pleurotus ostreatus fermented fenugreek for a vigorous in vitro effect against carcinoma cells

The novelty of the present work looks in the synthesis of aqueous dispersed selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) using gamma rays with the aid of various natural macromolecules such as citrus pectin (CP), sodium alginate (Alg), chitosan (CS) and aqueous extract of fermented fenugreek powder (AEFFP) using Pleurotus ostreatus for investigating their impact in vitro toward carcinoma cell. The synthesized Se NPs were characterized by XRD, UV-Vis., DLS, HRTEM, SEM, EDX and FTIR. Nucleation and growth mechanisms were also discussed. The factorial design was applied to examine the importance of multiple parameters on Se NPs production with a special focus on temperature and gamma rays influences. FTIR spectrum exhibited the existence of several functional groups in Se NPs-capping macromolecules. Results revealed that Se NPs' size was dramatically-influenced by the type of stabilizer, precursors concentration, pH and the absorbed gamma rays dose. The current research reported the promising antitumor application of Se NPs against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) and human Colon Adenocarcinoma (CACO) in vitro. The proliferation of EAC was significantly-hindered by Se NPs-CS (38.0 μg/ml) at 60 kGy (IC₅₀ = 23.12%) and Se NPs-AEFFP (19.00 μg/ml) at 15 kGy (IC₅₀ = 7.21%). Also, Se NPs control the generation of CACO cells, IC₅₀ was recorded as 25.32% for Se NPs-CS (38.0 μg/ml) and 8.57% for Se NPs-AEFFP (19.00 μg/ml).

Exposure of stevia (Stevia rebaudiana B.) to silver nanoparticles in vitro: transport and accumulation

The impact of nanotechnology in the field of agricultural sciences creates the need to study in greater detail the effect of products offering nanoparticles for application in plant species of agricultural interest. The objective of this study was to determine the response of stevia (Stevia rebaudiana B.) in vitro to different concentrations of AgNPs (silver nanoparticles), as well as to characterize and identify their absorption, translocation and accumulation mechanisms. Nodal segments of stevia grown in MS medium supplemented with AgNPs (0,12.5, 25, 50,100 and 200 mg L⁻¹) were used. After 30 days of in vitro shoot proliferation, the number of shoots per explant, shoot length, chlorophyll content, dry matter content and the metallic silver (Ag) content of the plants were quantified. In addition, characterization, transport and accumulation of silver nanoparticles were performed by microscopic analysis. AgNPs were shown to be present in epidermal stem cells, within vascular bundles and in intermembrane spaces. In leaves, they were observed in ribs and stomata. The current and future use of AgNPs in agricultural sciences opens up the possibility of studying their effects on different plant species.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles as a Post-surgical Treatment for Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Infection in Small Ruminants

Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) is an infectious and zoonotic disease characterized by the development of granulomas in the lymph nodes and internal organs of small ruminants. The etiological agent of this disease is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, a Gram-positive and facultative intracellular bacterium. The conventional treatment for CL consists of drainage and chemical cauterization of the lesions using a 10% iodine solution. However, this type of treatment is not effective, due to iodine's cytotoxic profile and low antibacterial activity. Currently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be seen as an alternative treatment for CL due to their antimicrobial activity and wound healing effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate AgNPs as a post-surgical treatment for CL. Twenty-nine goats and sheep with clinical signs of CL were selected. Surgical intervention was performed to excise the caseous lesions. To treat the lesions, an ointment formulation based on AgNP mixed with natural waxes and oils was used in the experimental group, and the conventional treatment with 10% iodine was used in the control group. Bacteria were isolated from the excised caseous material. The animals were observed for 8 weeks after the surgical treatment, and blood samples were taken weekly. The surgical wounds of sheep treated with AgNP healed faster, and the surgical wound area was smaller during the observation period; the latter effect was also observed in goats. AgNP-treated animals also had less purulent discharge and less moisture in the surgical wounds. The AgNP-treated animals had lower leukocyte counts and lower titers of anti-C. pseudotuberculosis antibodies. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with regard to the hemogram results. The results of the susceptibility testing of C. pseudotuberculosis strains (T1, 1002, FRC41, and VD57 strains) and clinical isolates to AgNPs showed growth inhibition, even at low concentrations. It can be concluded that post-surgical treatment of CL using the AgNP-based ointment may be a promising tool in the control of CL, through faster healing, decreased wound contamination, and no apparent toxic effects.

Brief overview of the application of silver nanoparticles to improve growth of crop plants

With the advancement in nanotechnology, nanoparticles are reported to have applications in various fields. Their positive role in the environment, especially in plant ecosystem, is extensively studied nowadays. Among the metal nanoparticles, the silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are receiving special attention because of their ability to increase the growth and yield in many crops. Although many studies are found containing toxic effects of AgNPs the perspective of the present review is to collect the information about their positive role in growth and yield enhancement of crops. During this brief overview, many important crop plants are found to have a positive response towards the application of AgNPs. The appropriate elucidation of physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanism of nanoparticles in plant leads to better plant growth and development. It is concluded from this review that cautious and sensible use of nanotechnology can warrant food security through boosting agricultural production.

Biomolecules-mediated synthesis of selenium nanoparticles using Aspergillus oryzae fermented Lupin extract and gamma radiation for hindering the growth of some multidrug-resistant bacteria and pathogenic fungi

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles by fermented plants using microbes is an eco-friendly and cost-effective process. In this study, we used the fungus Aspergillus orayzae for the fermentation process. The aqueous extract of fermented Lupin (AEFL) possesses the ability to reduce selenium ion in the presence of gamma rays evidenced by the color changes to red. Elemental composition, surface morphology, size determenation, and identity of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were verified by UV-Vis., TEM, DLS, XRD, EDX, SEM and FT-IR. Antimicrobial activity of SeNPs was tested towards multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, and some pathogenic fungi. TEM with DLS analysis confirmed the formation of sphere isotropic, poly-dispersed SeNPs with average particle size 55.0 nm. The nucleation and mechanism of SeNPs production was discussed. Our results revealed that, gamma ray (30.0 kGy) was played a significant role in SeNPs synthesis. The synthesized SeNPs were active towards Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (15.0 mm ZOI) and Staphylococcus aurus (16.6 mm ZOI). Additionally, SeNPs were inhibiting Candida albicans (15.3 mm ZOI) and mycotoxin producing Aspergillus flavus (29.6 mm ZOI). Depending on the unique characteristics, and the novelty in biosynthesis process of SeNPs, it must be candidates in biomedicine, prevent food spoilage, cosmetics, and pharmaceutics as green antimicrobial agent.

Antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer activities of zinc nanoparticles prepared by natural polysaccharides and gamma radiation

Aqueous dispersed zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) were synthesized using natural polysaccherides (chitosan (CS), citrus pectin (CP) and alginate (Alg)) using aqueous fermented fenugreek powder (FFP) by Pleurotus ostreatus as reducing and stabilizing agent or using gamma irradiation. The synthesized ZnNPs are characterized by ultra violect spectroscopy (UV), Transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). XRD analysis of the ZnNPS confirmed the formation of metallic nanoparticles. The nucleation and growth mechanism of ZnNPs is also discussed. TEM showed that the average diameter of ZnNPs was in the range of 46nm. The size of nanoparticles is influenced by certain parameters such as the choice of stabilizer, pH during synthesis and absorbed dose. Evaluating the antioxidant and anticancer activities of ZnNPs was performed. The results indicating the ZnNPs synthesized by aqueous fermented fenugreek extract have high activity and the average size is 46nm. The results explored that ZnNPs show anticancer activity against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) and human colon adenocarcinoma (CACO) and the IC_50% was 47.5μg/ml and 65μg/ml respectively. Also, ZnNPs had excellent bactericidal activity against gram positive and negative bacteria and yeast.
