Aging Anxieties and Disturbed Eating in Female Students: It's not all About Aging Appearance Concern

Orthorexic Tendency in Light of Eating Disorder Attitudes, Social Media Addiction and Regular Sporting Among Young Hungarian Women

This study examined a set of background psychological and other variables of orthorexic (ON) tendency in a sample of young women with special interest in healthy lifestyle. The sample consisted of female young adults (N = 310; aged 18-35 years; mean age = 24.3 years; SD = 4.97 years) who were recruited through social media health sites. Besides Orthorexia Nervosa Questionnaire (ORTO‑15), BMI, regular sporting activity, the following scales were used: Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI, drive for thinness, ineffectiveness and maturity fears); Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS); and The Proactive Coping Inventory. In this sample, 37.7% were at risk for ON. Eating disorder attitudes, regular sporting and social media addiction were the most relevant predictors of orthorexic tendency with drive for thinness being the strongest contributor (β = 0.54, p < 0.001). For young women with a special interest in healthy lifestyle, drive for thinness together with regular sporting, ON tendency may serve as a tool for achieving their goal. Social media addiction and other psychological problems (feeling of ineffectiveness or maturity fears) can also contribute to orthorexic rendency. It would be important to ask for support from qualified health professionals when changing nutritional practices.

Unveiling the multifaceted nexus of subjective aging, biological aging, and chronological age: Findings from a nationally representative cohort study

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to investigate how subjective aging influences the psychological and behavioral responses of older individuals, specifically focusing on the associations between subjective aging and longitudinal changes in biological age.

METHODS

This is a retrospective cohort study retrieving data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA), over a 4-year follow-up period. Subjective aging is assessed by asking participants if they perceive themselves as old, while frailty is measured using a frailty index comprising 34 deficits from various domains. Participants are categorized into three groups based on their chronological age. The association between subjective aging and transition of biological age (as indicated by an increased frailty index) from 2011 to 2015 is examined using logistic regression models.

RESULTS

The study consisted of 2412 participants, who were categorized into middle-age (n = 1,082), young-old (n = 779), and old-old (n = 551) groups. Among them, individuals exhibiting subjective aging at baseline were more likely to be older in chronological age, female, illiterate, and unemployed, compared to those without subjective aging. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for the association between subjective aging and an increased biological age were 1.72 [95% CI: 0.88-3.34], 1.61 [0.77-3.37], and 1.08 [0.65-1.80], in the middle-age, young-old, and old-old groups, respectively.

DISCUSSIONS

No significant associations were found between changes in biological age and subjective aging across various chronological age groups. Notably, within the younger age group, a discernible trend towards an association was observed, indicating the potential age-related nuances in the complex interrelation between subjective age, biological aging, and chronological aging.

Healthcare Professionals' Views and Perspectives towards Aging

Improving care for the older population is a growing clinical need in the United States. Ageism and other attitudes of healthcare professionals can negatively impact care for older adults. This study investigated healthcare professionals' (N = 140) views towards aging and characterized a confluence of factors influencing ageism perspectives in healthcare workers using path analysis models. These models proposed relationships between aging anxiety, expectations regarding aging, age, ageism, and knowledge. Aging anxiety had a less critical role in the final model than hypothesized and influenced ageism in healthcare workers through its negative effect (β = -0.27) on expectations regarding aging. In contrast, aging knowledge (β = -0.23), age (β = -0.27), and expectations regarding aging (β = -0.48) directly and inversely influenced ageism. Increased knowledge about the aging process could lower ageism amongst healthcare professionals and improve care for older adults. The results put forth in this study help to characterize and understand healthcare workers' complex views towards the aging population they often encounter. Moreover, these results highlight the need and utility of leveraging practitioner education for combating ageism in the clinical setting.
