Aerosol optical depth (AOD): spatial and temporal variations and association with meteorological covariates in Taklimakan desert, China

Estimation of PM2.5 using high-resolution satellite data and its mortality risk in an area of Iran

Satellite-based exposure of fine particulate matters has been seldom used as a predictor of mortality. PM2.5 was predicted using Aerosol Optical Depths (AOD) through a two-stage regression model. The predicted PM2.5 was corrected for the bias using two approaches. We estimated the impact by two different scenarios of PM2.5 in the model. We statistically found different distributions of the predicted PM2.5 over the region. Compared to the reference value (5 µg/m3), 90th and 95th percentiles had significant adverse effect on total mortality (RR 90th percentile:1.45; CI 95%: 1.08-1.95 and RR 95th percentile:1.53; CI 95%: 1.11-2.1). Nearly 1050 deaths were attributed to any range of the air pollution (unhealthy range), of which more than half were attributed to high concentration range. Given the adverse effect of extreme values compared to the both scenarios, more efforts are suggested to define local-specific reference values and preventive strategies.

Applications of remote sensing vis-à-vis machine learning in air quality monitoring and modelling: a review

Environmental contamination especially air pollution is an exponentially growing menace requiring immediate attention, as it lingers on with the associated risks of health, economic and ecological crisis. The special focus of this study is on the advances in Air Quality (AQ) monitoring using modern sensors, integrated monitoring systems, remote sensing and the usage of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) algorithms, artificial neural networks, recent computational techniques, hybridizing techniques and different platforms available for AQ modelling. The modern world is data-driven, where critical decisions are taken based on the available and accessible data. Today's data analytics is a consequence of the information explosion we have reached. The current research also tends to re-evaluate its scope with data analytics. The emergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the research scenario has radically changed the methodologies and approaches of modern research. The aim of this review is to assess the impact of data analytics such as ML/DL frameworks, data integration techniques, advanced statistical modelling, cloud computing platforms and constantly improving optimization algorithms on AQ research. The usage of remote sensing in AQ monitoring along with providing enormous datasets is constantly filling the spatial gaps of ground stations, as the long-term air pollutant dynamics is best captured by the panoramic view of satellites. Remote sensing coupled with the techniques of ML/DL has the most impact in shaping the modern trends in AQ research. Current standing of research in this field, emerging trends and future scope are also discussed.

Trend relationship between mountain normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) across two decades: implication for water quality within the Lesotho Highlands, Drakensberg, South Africa

There are growing concerns on contribution of vegetation dynamics to atmospheric turbidity and quality of regional water towers. The study sought to determine the trends in the MODIS/TERRA-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) for Lesotho Highland over 2000-2020. The predictive relationship between the two variables was also examined using regression analysis. Irrespective of yearly AOD patterns, the AOD showed biphasic patterns peaking between mid-winter to early spring (July-October) (highest) and autumn (Feb-April) (next highest), and lowest in the summer (Nov-January). The monthly NDVI was largest in January-March (summer-early fall) with smaller values in winter and spring. This seasonality can be related to the peak of anthropogenic biomass combustion during the winter and strong winds during the spring and early summer. The AOD relationship with NDVI showed quadratic patterns peaking and plunging with changes in season. About 30-80% (R² = 0.3-0.8%) changes in annual AOD from 2000 to 2020 were explainable by the dynamics of NDVI indicating that increased NDVI contributes to about a 50% decrease in AOD in the Lesotho Highlands. However, an outlier trend was observed in 2007 (R² = 13%). Incidences of high AOD in months of high NDVI may be indicative of traveling aerosols, i.e., aerosols from non-local sources/activity. On the other hand, high AOD in months of low NDVI implicates local aerosol sources. Trend relationship studies on vegetation loss and AOD in mountain areas of other regions could improve knowledge of contaminant dynamics and risk implications for downstream populations.
