Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Bronchial Asthma in Children in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The status and influencing factors of lung ventilation function in employees exposed to dust in enterprises of the XPCC, China

Background

Occupational health is closely related to harmful factors in the workplace. Dust is the primary contributing factor causing impaired lung ventilation function among employees with dust exposure, and their lung ventilation function may also be influenced by other factors. We aimed at assessing the status and influencing factors of lung ventilation function among employees exposed to dust in the enterprises of the Eighth Division located in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), China.

Methods

Employees exposed to dust in enterprises of the Eighth Division located in the XPCC in 2023 were selected as the subjects of this cross-sectional study. Their lung ventilation function indicators were extracted from health examination records, and an on-site electronic questionnaire survey was conducted among them. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the factors influencing lung ventilation function.

Results

According to the fixed value criteria, the abnormal rates of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC were 31.6, 1.4, and 0.4%, respectively. The lower limit of normal (LLN) criteria could overestimate the rate of abnormal lung ventilation function. Several factors were related to impaired lung ventilation function, including gender, age, education level, marital status, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, physical activity, the type of dust, industry, enterprise scale, occupation, length of service, working shift, monthly income, and respiratory protection.

Conclusions

A relatively low abnormal rate of lung ventilation function was observed among employees exposed to dust in enterprises of the Eighth Division, XPCC, and their lung ventilation function was associated with various factors. Effective measures should be taken urgently to reduce the effects of adverse factors on lung ventilation function, thereby further protecting the health of the occupational population.

Prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children exposed to pets: a meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Pet exposure has always been controversial with childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis. We aimed to understand the prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children exposed to pets by meta-analysis.

METHODS

We searched articles published from Jan 1, 2012 to Dec 31, 2022 in the Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. We included a cross-sectional study that reported the prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children exposed to pets. Furthermore, we performed subgroup analyses according to pet type and age.

RESULTS

In 14 selected studies, the meta-analysis results showed that the pooled prevalence of asthma in children exposed to pets was 19.0% (95% CI 13.3-24.7%), and the pooled prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children exposed to pets was 25.5% (95% CI 12.4-38.5%). The prevalence of asthma in children exposed to cats and dogs was 16.4% (95% CI 9.9-22.8%) and 12.5% (95% CI 8.7-16.2%), respectively. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 24.9% (95% CI 2.9-47.0%) and 24.1% (95% CI 2.6-45.6%), respectively. The prevalence of asthma in pet-exposed children was 17.1% (95% CI 12.3-22.0%) in the adolescence group (> 10 years) and 26.3% (95% CI 12.2-40.3%) in the childhood group (0-10 years). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 8.6% (95% CI 7.2-10.0%) in the adolescence group and 46.3% (95% CI 44.0-48.6%) in the childhood age group.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children exposed to pets is different. Exposure to pet cats is more prone to illness, and younger children are more susceptible to disease than older children.

The impact of asthma-exclusive nursing scheme on the treatment effect of asthma patients

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the impact of the asthma-exclusive nursing scheme on the treatment effect of asthma patients.

METHODS

A total of 120 asthma patients treated in our hospital from January 2019 to June 2019 were included for the research, with 60 patients in Group A from January 2019 to March 2019, and 60 patients in Group B from April 2019 to June 2019. Montelukast combined with formoterol lyophilized powder was employed as the treatment for all patients. An asthma-exclusive nursing scheme was given to Group A, and conventional nursing was applied to Group B. The analysis and comparison of symptom relief time (SRT), pulmonary function indicators (PFI), 6-minute walking distance (6MWD), adverse drug reactions (ADRs), levels of inflammatory factors (LIF), and overall efficacy between the two groups were conducted.

RESULTS

After the treatment, Group A yielded a more promising outcome of SRT than Group B (P<0.001). Moreover, a notable increase of PFI and LIF of both groups of patients was observed, in which Group A garnered more promising results than Group B (P<0.001), and similar results were also demonstrated with regard to 6MWD (P<0.001). Neither abnormal metabolism in patients nor significant difference of ADRs between the two groups was detected (P>0.05). The overall efficacy and compliance rate of Group A were higher than those of Group B, and the 6-month recurrence rate was lower than that of Group B (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

With the aid of an asthma-exclusive nursing scheme, montelukast combined with formoterol can safely and substantially optimize the PFI and LIF of asthma patients and enhance their exercise capacity, which is of application value in clinical practice.

Integrative analysis of the contribution of mRNAs and long non‑coding RNAs to the pathogenesis of asthma

Asthma, a common but poorly controlled disease, is one of the most serious health problems worldwide; however, the mechanisms underlying the development of asthma remain unknown. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs serve important roles in the initiation and progression of various diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the role of differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs associated with asthma. Differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs were screened between the expression data of 62 patients with asthma and 43 healthy controls. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were performed to investigate the biological functions and pathways associated with the lncRNAs and mRNAs identified. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were subsequently generated. In addition, lncRNA-mRNA weighted co-expression networks were obtained. In total, 159 differentially expressed lncRNAs and 1,261 mRNAs were identified. GO and KEGG analyses revealed that differentially expressed mRNAs regulated asthma by participating in the ‘vascular endothelial (VEGF) signaling pathway’, ‘oxidative phosphorylation’, ‘Fc ε RI signaling pathway’, ‘amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism’, ‘histidine metabolism’, ‘β-alanine metabolism’ and ‘extracellular matrix-receptor interaction’ (P<0.05). Furthermore, protein kinase B 1 had the highest connectivity degree in the PPI network, and was significantly enriched in the ‘VEGF signaling pathway’ and ‘Fc ε RI signaling pathway’. A total of 8 lncRNAs in the lncRNA-mRNA co-expression network were reported to interact with 52 differentially expressed genes, which were enriched in asthma-associated GO and KEGG pathways. The results obtained in the present study may provide insight into the profile of differentially expressed lncRNAs associated with asthma. The identification of a cluster of dysregulated lncRNAs and mRNAs may serve as a potential therapeutic strategy to reverse the progression of asthma.

Social, Environmental and Behavioral Determinants of Asthma Symptoms in Brazilian Middle School Students-A National School Health Survey (Pense 2012)

Biological and psychosocial factors are recognized contributors to the worldwide burden of asthma. However, the relationship between psychosocial factors and asthma symptoms among students in low- and middle-income countries remains underexplored. We aimed to identify socioeconomic, environmental, psychosocial, family-related and lifestyle factors associated with the self-reporting of asthma symptoms in Brazilian adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study using data from the 2012 PeNSE survey (n = 109,104). We analyzed the following variables: socioeconomic conditions, demographic characteristics, lifestyle, family context and dynamics, psychosocial indicators, smoking, and exposure to violence. Our outcome variable was the self-report of asthma symptoms in the past 12 months. The prevalence of wheezing was 22.7% (21.5–23.9). After adjusting for sex, age and the variables from higher hierarchical levels, exposure to violence (feeling unsafe at school, being frequently bullied, being exposed to fights with firearms) and physical aggression by an adult in the family were the environmental factors that showed the strongest associations with self-reporting of asthma symptoms. For psychosocial indicators of mental health and social integration, feelings of loneliness and sleeping problems were the strongest factors, and among individual behavioral factors, the largest associations were found for tobacco consumption. Our findings were consistent with previous studies, showing an association between self-reported asthma symptoms and socio-economic status, family context and dynamics, psychosocial indicators of mental health, exposure to violence and social integration, as well as a sedentary lifestyle and tobacco use.

Finding a Better Solution for Asthma Control in Children

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that is very common among children. With proper management and follow-ups, this condition can be easily controlled in a child. However, there are several factors that are negatively influencing a proper care of asthmatic children throughout the world. In this mini-review, the roles of the parents, the schools and the child himself were analyzed and several possible solutions to improve those hurdles were discussed.
