Abstract
Optical fiber with YPO4:Pr3+ nanocrystals (NCs) is presented for the first time using the glass powder-NCs doping method. The method's advantage is separate preparation of NCs and glass to preserve luminescent and optical properties of NCs once they are incorporated into optical fiber. The YPO4:Pr3+ nanocrystals were synthesized by the co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods, optimized for size (< 100 nm), shape, Pr3+ ions concentration (0.2 mol%), and emission lifetime. The core glass was selected from the non-silica P2O5-containing system with refractive index (n = 1.788) close to the NCs (no = 1.657, ne = 1.838). Optical fiber was drawn by modified powder-in-tube method after pre-sintering of glass powder-YPO4:Pr3+ (wt 3%) mixture to form optical fiber preform. Luminescent properties of YPO4:Pr3+ and optical fiber showed their excellent agreement, including sharp Pr3+ emission at 600 nm (1D2-3H4) and 1D2 level lifetime (τ = 156 ± 5 µs) under 488 nm excitation. The distribution of the YPO4:Pr3+ NCs in optical fiber were analyzed by TEM-EDS in the core region (FIB-SEM-prepared). The successful usage of glass powder-NCs doping method was discussed in the aspect of promising properties of the first YPO4:Pr3+ doped optical fiber as a new way to develop active materials for lasing applications, among others.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) to platinum-based drugs are heterogenous and restrict their access, and drug desensitization (DD) has provided a ground-breaking procedure for their re-introduction, although the response is heterogeneous. We aimed to identify the phenotypes, endotypes, and biomarkers of reactions to carboplatin and oxaliplatin and their response to DD. METHODS Seventy-nine patients presenting with DHRs to oxaliplatin (N = 46) and carboplatin (N = 33) were evaluated at the Allergy Departments of two tertiary care hospitals in Spain. Patient symptoms, skin testing, biomarkers, and outcomes of 267 DDs were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Oxaliplatin-reactive patients presented with type I (74%), cytokine release reaction (CRR) (11%), and mixed (Mx) (15%) phenotypes. In contrast, carboplatin reactive patients presented with predominantly type I (85%) and Mx (15%) but no CRRs. Out of 267 DDs, breakthrough reactions (BTRs) to oxaliplatin occurred twice as frequently as carboplatin (32% vs. 15%; p < .05). Phenotype switching from type I to another phenotype was observed in 46% of oxaliplatin DDs compared to 21% of carboplatin DDs. Tryptase was elevated in type I and Mx reactions, and IL-6 in CRR and Mx, indicating different mechanisms and endotypes. CONCLUSION Carboplatin and oxaliplatin induced three different types of reactions with defined phenotypes and endotypes amendable to DD. Although most of the initial reactions for both were type I, oxaliplatin presented with unique CRR reactions. During DD, carboplatin reactive patients presented mostly type I BTR, while oxaliplatin-reactive patients frequently switched from type I to CRR, providing a critical difference and the need for personalized DD protocols.

Abstract
Developing prolonged antigen delivery systems that mimic long-term exposure to pathogens appears as a promising but still poorly explored approach to reach durable immunities. In this study, we have used a simple technology by which His-tagged proteins can be assembled, assisted by divalent cations, as supramolecular complexes with progressive complexity, namely protein-only nanoparticles and microparticles. Microparticles produced out of nanoparticles are biomimetics of secretory granules from the mammalian hormonal system. Upon subcutaneous administration, they slowly disintegrate, acting as an endocrine-like secretory system and rendering the building block nanoparticles progressively bioavailable. The performance of such materials, previously validated for drug delivery in oncology, has been tested here regarding the potential for time-prolonged antigen release. This has been completed by taking, as a building block, a nanostructured version of p30, a main structural immunogen from the African swine fever virus (ASFV). By challenging the system in both mice and pigs, we have observed unusually potent pro-inflammatory activity in porcine macrophages, and long-lasting humoral and cellular responses in vivo, which might overcome the need for an adjuvant. The robustness of both innate and adaptive responses tag, for the first time, these dynamic depot materials as a novel and valuable instrument with transversal applicability in immune stimulation and vaccinology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cryptorchidism is one of the most common congenital disorders in boys and it is associated with a higher risk of sub-fertility and testicular cancer. Testicular descent occurs during embryo-fetal development in two phases, transabdominal and inguino-scrotal. In the latter process, androgens play a leading role. The androgen receptor has in its N-terminal domain, two aminoacidic repeats encoded by polymorphic nucleotide repetitions: (CAG)nCAA and GGN. The number of repetitions of these trinucleotides has been associated with different transactivation capacities and sensitivities of the androgen receptor response. OBJECTIVE To determine whether pediatric Chilean individuals with idiopathic inguinal cryptorchidism have a different number of CAG and/or GGN repeats polymorphisms compared with controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 109 cases with idiopathic inguinal cryptorchidism (26 bilateral and 83 unilateral) were studied by polymerase chain reaction amplification from DNA extracted from peripheral blood, followed by fragment size analysis by capillary electrophoresis, which were compared with 140 controls. RESULTS The CAG26 repeats allele was increased in the total cases (8.3% vs. 1.4%; p = 0.012; odds ratio = 6.21, 95% confidence interval 1.31-29.4), and in bilateral cases compared to controls (11.5% vs. 1.4%; p = 0.028; odds ratio = 9 CI 95% 1.43-56.8). Similarly, CAG > 22 alleles were increased in the total cases (62.4% vs. 49.3%, p = 0.041), and more significantly in bilateral cases (73.1% vs. 49.3%; p = 0.032; odds ratio = 2.79, 95% confidence interval 1.1-7.1). In addition, CAG < 18 alleles were not observed among cases, but were present in 5.7% of controls (p = 0.01). Regarding the GGN repeats, no differences were observed between cases and controls either when analyzing separately unilateral and bilateral cryptorchidism. The joint analysis of the distribution of CAG and GGN alleles showed that the CAG26 allele was present with GGN23, hence the combination CAG26/GGN23 alleles was equally increased in bilateral cases compared with controls (11.5% vs. 1.4%). In contrast, CAG < 18 was preferably observed in the combination CAG < 18/GGN≠23 and was absent in the total cases (4.3% vs. 0%; p = 0.037). DISCUSSION These results suggest that greater lengths of CAG alleles may contribute to a diminished androgen receptor function. The CAG26 allele alone or in combination with GGN23 was associated with a higher risk of bilateral cryptorchidism. On the other hand, CAG < 18 and the CAG < 18/GGN≠23 allele combination may reduce the probability of cryptorchidism.

Abstract
Biochemical premature adrenarche is defined by elevated serum DHEAS [≥40 μg/dL] before age 8 y in girls. This condition is receiving more attention due to its association with obesity, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Nevertheless, the link between early androgen excess and these risk factors remains unknown. Epigenetic modifications, and specifically DNA methylation, have been associated with the initiation and progression of numerous disorders, including obesity and insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to determine if prepubertal androgen exposure is associated with a different methylation profile in pubertal girls. Eighty-six healthy girls were studied. At age 7 y, anthropometric measurements were begun and DHEAS levels were determined. Girls were classified into Low DHEAS (LD) [<42 μg/dL] and High DHEAS (HD) [≥42 μg/dL] groups. At Tanner stages 2 and 4 a DNA methylation microarray was performed to identify differentially methylated CpG positions (DMPs) between HD and LD groups. We observed a differential methylation pattern between pubertal girls with and without biochemical PA. Moreover, a set of DNA methylation markers, selected by the LASSO method, successfully distinguished between HD and LD girls regardless of Tanner stage. Additionally, a subset of these markers were significantly associated with glucose-related measures such as insulin level, HOMA-IR, and glycaemia. This pilot study provides evidence consistent with the hypothesis that high DHEAS concentration, or its hormonally active metabolites, may induce a unique blood methylation signature in pubertal girls, and that this methylation pattern is associated with altered glucose metabolism.

Abstract
COVID-19 was the most significant infectious-agent-related cause of death in the 2020-2021 period. On average, over 60% of those admitted to ICU facilities with this disease died across the globe. In severe cases, COVID-19 leads to respiratory and systemic compromise, including pneumonia-like symptoms, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and multiorgan failure. While the upper respiratory tract and lungs are the principal sites of infection and injury, most studies on the metabolic signatures in COVID-19 patients have been carried out on serum and plasma samples. In this report we attempt to characterize the metabolome of lung parenchyma extracts from fatal COVID-19 cases and compare them with that from other respiratory diseases. Our findings indicate that the metabolomic profiles from fatal COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 cases are markedly different, with the former being the result of increased lactate and amino acid metabolism, altered energy pathways, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response. Overall, these findings provide additional insights into the pathophysiology of COVID-19 that could lead to the development of targeted therapies for the treatment of severe cases of the disease, and further highlight the potential of metabolomic approaches in COVID-19 research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The length of conventional single-use cholangioscopes poses a challenge for percutaneous or laparoscopic approaches for direct visualization of the biliary tract. The aim of this retrospective observational clinical study was to assess the use of a dedicated percutaneous short single-operator cholangioscope (PSSOC) for diagnosis and treatment of benign or malignant biliary diseases. METHODS Retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database including all consecutive patients undergoing percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy with the PSSOC between 06/2021 and 01/2023. RESULTS Forty patients were included (22F/18 M, age 58.7 ± 16.7 years). The diagnostic and therapeutic management plan was based on procedural findings. Indications were bile duct obstruction associated with complex anatomy (n = 13), choledocholithiasis (n = 11), suspected malignant stenosis of the biliary tract (n = 11), biliary stent placement (n = 2) and removal (n = 1), and failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (n = 2). The cholangioscopies were diagnostic (n = 5), therapeutic (n = 20) or both simultaneously (n = 15). The most frequent procedures were electrohydraulic lithotripsy (n = 25) and biopsy sampling (n = 12). Complications occurred in 7 cases (17.5%), including cholangitis (n = 4, B2), pleural perforation (n = 1, B2), portal bleeding (n = 1, B3), and Tako-Tsubo syndrome (n = 1, B3), classified according to the Society of Interventional Radiology classification. Intraprocedural visual diagnosis was confirmed by the histopathologic result in 11/12 patients in which biopsies were performed (91.7%). PSSOC was relevant to avoid surgery in 2 patients (5%) with indeterminate strictures, allowing to rule out malignancy and treat the lithiasis. CONCLUSIONS Direct visualization of the biliary tract enabled targeted biopsies for histopathological diagnosis. The visual and histopathological diagnoses were concordant in all but one case. Percutaneous cholangioscopy with a dedicated PSSOC allows to optimize identification and treatment of complex biliary disease including biliary lithiasis while assessing bile duct patency. The clinical use of the novel PSSOC system was safe and effective and could prevent surgical exploration in select patients.

Abstract
Glaesserella parasuis is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the upper airways of swine, capable of causing a systemic infection called Glässer's disease. This disease is more frequent in young post-weaning piglets. Current treatments against G. parasuis infection are based on the use of antimicrobials or inactivated vaccines, which promote limited cross-protection against different serovars. For this reason, there is an interest in developing novel subunit vaccines with the capacity to confer effective protection against different virulent strains. Herein, we characterize the immunogenicity and the potential benefits of neonatal immunization with two different vaccine formulations based on the F4 polypeptide, a conserved immunogenic protein fragment from the virulence-associated trimeric autotransporters of virulent G. parasuis strains. With this purpose, we immunized two groups of piglets with F4 combined with cationic adjuvant CAF®01 or cyclic dinucleotide CDA. Piglets immunized with a commercial bacterin and non-immunized animals served as control groups. The vaccinated piglets received two doses of vaccine, at 14 days old and 21 days later. The immune response induced against the F4 polypeptide varied depending on the adjuvant used. Piglets vaccinated with the F4+CDA vaccine developed specific anti-F4 IgGs, biased towards the induction of IgG1 responses, whereas no anti-F4 IgGs were de novo induced after immunization with the CAF®01 vaccine. Piglets immunized with both formulations displayed balanced memory T-cell responses, evidenced upon in vitro re-stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with F4. Interestingly, pigs immunized with F4+CAF®01 controlled more efficiently a natural nasal colonization by a virulent serovar 4 G. parasuis that spontaneously occurred during the experimental procedure. According to the results, the immunogenicity and the protection afforded by F4 depend on the adjuvant used. F4 may represent a candidate to consider for a Glässer's disease vaccine and could contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in protection against virulent G. parasuis colonization.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for weight loss, with comorbidity control. With low complication rates, the reasons for reoperation are major complications or weight loss failure/weight regain. Nonsurgical problems can also present, such as anemia, dehydration, chronic pain, and malnutrition, among others. Our aim was to analyze the main causes of revisional surgery, reoperation, and hospital readmission, at a specialized bariatric center. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on patients that underwent bariatric surgery within the time frame of 2012 and 2019. The baseline analysis included demographic, anthropometric, and perioperative data, as well as a sub-analysis of the main readmission causes and complications. RESULTS A total of 776 primary surgeries were performed (649 RYGBP, 127 SG, and 10 revisional surgeries), and 99 patients were identified for the study: 10 revisional surgeries, 44 reoperations, and 45 readmissions. The incidence of revisional surgery was 1.2%, reoperation was 5.6%, and readmission 5.8%. Fifty percent of the revisional surgeries were performed due to insufficient weight loss or weight regain; the most frequent causes of reoperation were cholecystitis (38.6%) and internal hernias (9.1%); and the most common causes of readmission were nonspecific abdominal pain (35.5%) and dehydration (24.4%). CONCLUSION The most frequent causes of postoperative readmission were nonsurgical events, followed by non-bariatric reoperations, and finally revisional surgeries. There was a low incidence of early reoperations. Knowledge of the abovementioned data is important for identifying higher-risk patients, to prevent major complications.

Abstract
Type material and additional collections of 11 taxa of Gautieria described in Europe and North Africa have been studied, namely G. dubia, G. graveolens, G. morchelliformis var. globispora, G. morchelliformis var. magnicellaris, G. morchelliformis var. morchelliformis, G. morchelliformis var. stenospora, G. otthii, G. pseudovestita, G. retirugosa, G. trabutii and G. villosa. At the same time, morphological and genetic studies on recent and herbarium collections from several European countries have been carried out. This enabled clarification of sections within Gautieria and differentiation of 28 taxa, of which 21 are new to science. However, the deeper relationships and nomenclature changes related to the phylogenetic position of the genus Gautieria within Gomphaceae will not be addressed in this study because they would require a more complete molecular analysis together with that of related genera, e.g., Gomphus, Turbinellus, and the four subgenera of Ramaria. In addition, a lectotype for G. villosa var. villosa and reference specimens for G. graveolens and G. morchelliformis var. morchelliformis are selected, and the new combination G. morchelliformis var. dubia is proposed. Detailed descriptions, macro- and microphotographs and distribution maps of all taxa are provided, as well as extensive information on their ecology, chorology and phylogeny. Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential benefits of feeding spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) to pigs infected with African swine fever virus (ASFV). Two groups of twelve weaned pigs each were fed with CONVENTIONAL or 8% SDPP enriched diets. Two pigs (trojans)/group) were injected intramuscularly with the pandemic ASFV (Georgia 2007/01) and comingled with the rest of the pigs (1:5 trojan:naïve ratio) to simulate a natural route of transmission. Trojans developed ASF and died within the first week after inoculation, but contact pigs did not develop ASF, viremia, or seroconversion. Therefore, three more trojans per group were introduced to optimize the ASFV transmission (1:2 trojan:naïve ratio). Blood, nasal, and rectal swabs were weekly harvested, and at end of the study ASFV-target organs collected. After the second exposure, rectal temperature of conventionally fed contact pigs increased >40.5 °C while fever was delayed in the SDPP contact pigs. Additionally, PCR Ct values in blood, secretions, and tissue samples were significantly lower (p < 0.05) for CONVENTIONAL compared to SDPP contact pigs. Under these study conditions, contact exposed pigs fed SDPP had delayed ASFV transmission and reduced virus load, likely by enhanced specific T-cell priming after the first ASFV-exposure.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of feeding spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) on the protection afforded by the BA71∆CD2 African swine fever virus (ASFV) vaccine prototype. Two groups of pigs acclimated to diets without or with 8% SDPP were intranasally inoculated with 105 plaque-forming units (PFU) of live attenuated ASFV strain BA71∆CD2 and, three weeks later, left in direct contact with pigs infected with the pandemic Georgia 2007/01 ASFV strain. During the post-exposure (pe) period, 2/6 from the conventional diet group showed a transient peak rectal temperature >40.5 °C before day 20 pe, and some tissue samples collected at 20 d pe from 5/6 were PCR+ for ASFV, albeit showing Ct values much higher than Trojan pigs. Interestingly, the SDPP group did not show fever, neither PCR+ in blood nor rectal swab at any time pe, and none of the postmortem collected tissue samples were PCR+ for ASFV. Differential serum cytokine profiles among groups at vaccination, and a higher number of ASFV-specific IFNϒ-secreting T cells in pigs fed with SDPP soon after the Georgia 2007/01 encounter, confirmed the relevance of Th1-like responses in ASF protection. We believe that our result shows that nutritional interventions might contribute to improving future ASF vaccination strategies.

Abstract
To contribute of the knowledge of the immune mechanisms underlying the response to the immunization of goats with thiol-binding proteins fractions (PBS-TSBP) from Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) adult worms, this study analyzed the degree of protection and the immune responses developed against the parasite after vaccination with this antigenic complex during the time-elapsing between challenge with L3 of the parasite and the development of adult worms, evidenced by the appearance of first faecal eggs (prepatent period or prepatency). Goat kids immunized with PBS-TBSP generated an immune response during the prepatency which translates into a reduction in the number of worms, as well as a lower reduction on packed cell volume and plasma protein levels in relation to the non-vaccinated animals. As previously described in other studies carried out after the prepatent period, this protection was associated with a systemic humoral response. At the local level, a specific humoral response was also observed, together with an immune-inflammatory infiltrate in the gastric mucosa of MCH-II + cells and CD4+ lymphocytes, whose number was associated with a reduction in the number of worms and an increase in plasma proteins. A high peripheral eosinophilia was detected, but no corresponding increased infiltration of the gastric mucosa by eosinophils or globular leukocytes was observed. In agreement with previous data on the immunolocalization of the antigens used here, the results obtained contribute to the idea that these may be excretion/secretion (E/S) products necessary for parasite survival, whose inactivation during the larval and/or pre-adult stages may have contributed to immunoprotection.

Abstract
The mechanical properties and stability of metal nanoparticle colloids under high-pressure conditions are investigated by means of optical extinction spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), for colloidal dispersions of gold nanorods and gold nanospheres. SAXS allows us to follow in situ the structural evolution of the nanoparticles induced by pressure, regarding both nanoparticle size and shape (form factor) and their aggregation through the interparticle correlation function S(q) (structure factor). The observed behavior changes under hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic conditions are discussed in terms of liquid solidification processes yielding nanoparticle aggregation. We show that pressure-induced diffusion and aggregation of gold nanorods take place after solidification of the solvent. The effect of nanoparticle shape on the aggregation process is additionally discussed.

Abstract
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is causing a worldwide pandemic affecting the porcine industry and leading to important global economic consequences. The virus causes a highly lethal hemorrhagic disease in wild boars and domestic pigs. Lack of effective vaccines hampers the control of virus spread, thus increasing the pressure on the scientific community for urgent solutions. However, knowledge on the immune components associated with protection is very limited. Here we characterized the in vitro recall response induced by immune cells from pigs intranasally vaccinated with the BA71ΔCD2 deletion mutant virus. Vaccination conferred dose-dependent cross-protection associated with both ASFV-specific antibodies and IFNγ-secreting cells. Importantly, bulk and single-cell transcriptomics of blood and lymph node cells from vaccinated pigs revealed a positive feedback from adaptive to innate immunity. Indeed, activation of Th1 and cytotoxic T cells was concomitant with a rapid IFNγ-dependent triggering of an inflammatory response characterized by TNF-producing macrophages, as well as CXCL10-expressing lymphocytes and cross-presenting dendritic cells. Altogether, this study provides a detailed phenotypic characterization of the immune cell subsets involved in cross-protection against ASFV, and highlights key functional immune mechanisms to be considered for the development of an effective ASF vaccine. African swine fever (ASF) pandemic is currently the number one threat for the porcine industry worldwide. Lack of treatments hampers its control, and the insufficient knowledge regarding the immune effector mechanisms required for protection hinders rational vaccine design. Here we present the first comprehensive study characterizing the complex cellular immune response involved in cross-protection against ASF. We show that, upon in vitro reactivation, cells from immune pigs induce a Th1-biased recall response that in turn enhances the antiviral innate response. Our results suggest that this positive feedback regulation of innate immunity plays a key role in the early control of ASF virus infection. Altogether, this work represents a step forward in the understanding of ASF immunology and provide critical immune components that should be considered to more rationally design future ASF vaccines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The COVID-19 pandemic has required important changes in the lifestyles and quality of life of higher education students, generating emotional distress. This study sought to evaluate a predictive model of emotional distress and positive mental health through measures of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in Chilean higher education students during the pandemic. METHOD To this end, 502 students (67.8% female), aged 18-44 years, were surveyed at two time points during the pandemic, separated by 6 months. Potential predictors included emotional regulation strategies, perceived social support, sociodemographic characteristics, factors related to the pandemic, and students' experiences related to online classes. RESULTS Findings indicated that PTSS levels were generally stable across the two time points, but PTG levels increased. In addition, emotional regulation strategies (suppression, cognitive reappraisal), perceived social support, and female gender predicted both PTSS and PTG 6 months later; students' number of hours of screen time for school also influenced PTG. CONCLUSIONS Findings enhance understanding of the processes contributing to PTSS and PTG in higher education students. The need to improve quality of life and mental health in higher education students, including individual- and institutional-level strategies, is discussed. Abstract
Background Penetrating diaphragmatic injuries are associated with a high incidence of posttraumatic empyema. We analyzed the contribution of trauma severity, specific organ injury, contamination severity, and surgical management to the risk of posttraumatic empyema in patients who underwent surgical repair of diaphragmatic injuries at a level 1 trauma center.
Methods This is a retrospective review of the patients who survived more than 48 h. Univariate OR calculations were performed to identify potential risk factors. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted ORs and identify independent risk factors.
Results We included 192 patients treated from 2011 to 2020. There were 169 (88.0) males. The mean interquartile range, (IQR) of age, was 27 (22–35) years. Gunshot injuries occurred in 155 subjects (80.7%). Mean (IQR) NISS and ATI were 29 (18–44) and 17 (10–27), respectively. Thoracic AIS was > 3 in 38 patients (19.8%). Hollow viscus was injured in 105 cases (54.7%): stomach in 65 (33.9%), colon in 52 (27.1%), small bowel in 42 (21.9%), and duodenum in 10 (5.2%). Visible contamination was found in 76 patients (39.6%). Potential thoracic contamination was managed with a chest tube in 128 cases (66.7%), with transdiaphragmatic pleural lavage in 42 (21.9%), and with video-assisted thoracoscopy surgery or thoracotomy in 22 (11.5%). Empyema occurred in 11 patients (5.7%). Multiple logistic regression identified thoracic AIS > 3 (OR 6.4, 95% CI 1.77–23. 43), and visible contamination (OR 5.13, 95% IC 1.26–20.90) as independent risk factors. The individual organ injured, or the method used to manage the thoracic contamination did not affect the risk of posttraumatic empyema.
Conclusion The severity of the thoracic injury and the presence of visible abdominal contamination were identified as independent risk factors for empyema after penetrating diaphragmatic trauma.

Abstract
Introduction: In recent years, the use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has become popular to prevent or treat massive bleeding due to placenta accreta spectrum (PAS).
Objective: There are multiple variations in REBOA use in this context and although the experience of vascular surgeons is extensive with aortic balloons, there are particularities in the management of these devices in the obstetric population that deserve to be discussed.
Methods: We discuss some technical considerations or “lessons learned” in our center that may be useful for other groups starting to use REBOA in PAS
Conclusion: Although REBOA is a useful strategy to prevent or treat massive bleeding due to PAS, its incorporation into management protocols must be carried out in a programmed and supervised manner.

Abstract
There is an ongoing debate on the evolutionary origin of the episodic memory function of the hippocampus. A widely accepted hypothesis claims that the hippocampus first evolved as a dedicated system for spatial navigation in ancestral vertebrates, being transformed later in phylogeny to support a broader role in episodic memory with the emergence of mammals. On the contrary, an alternative hypothesis holds that the hippocampus of ancestral vertebrates originally encoded both the spatial and temporal dimensions of relational memories since its evolutionary appearance, thus suggesting that the episodic-like memory function of the hippocampus could be the primitive condition in vertebrate forebrain evolution. The present experiment was aimed at scrutinizing these opposing hypotheses by investigating whether the hippocampal pallium of teleost fish, a vertebrate group that shares with mammals a common ancestor that lived about 400 Mya, is, like the hippocampus of mammals, essential to associate time-discontiguous events. Thus, goldfish with lesions in the ventral part of the dorsolateral pallium (Dlv), a telencephalic region considered homologous to the hippocampal pallium of land vertebrates, were trained in trace versus delay eyeblink-like classical conditioning, two learning procedures that differ only in the temporal relationships between the stimuli to be associated in memory. The results showed that hippocampal pallium lesion in goldfish severely impairs trace conditioning, but spares delay conditioning. This finding challenges the idea that navigation preceded relational memory in evolutionary appearance and suggests the possibility that a relational memory function that associates the experienced events in both the spatial and temporal dimensions could be a primitive feature of the hippocampus that pre-existed in the common ancestor of vertebrates.

Abstract
CONTEXT Adrenarche reflects the developmental growth of the adrenal zona reticularis, which produces increasing adrenal androgen secretion (eg, dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA]/dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate [DHEAS]) from approximately age 5 to 15 years. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that the study of the genetic determinants associated with variations in serum DHEAS during adrenarche might detect genetic variants influencing the rate or timing of this process. METHODS Genome-wide genotyping was performed in participants of the Chilean pediatric Growth and Obesity Chilean Cohort Study (GOCS) cohort (n = 788). We evaluated the genetic determinants of DHEAS levels at the genome-wide level and in targeted genes associated with steroidogenesis. To corroborate our findings, we evaluated a polygenic risk score (PRS) for age at pubarche, based on the discovered variants, in children from the same cohort. RESULTS We identified one significant variant at the genome-wide level in the full cohort, close to the GALR1 gene (P = 3.81 × 10-8). In addition, variants suggestive of association (P < 1 × 10-5) were observed in PRLR, PITX1, PTPRD, NR1H4, and BCL11B. Stratifying by sex, we found variants suggestive of association in SERBP1 and CAMTA1/VAMP3 for boys and near ZNF98, TRPC6, and SULT2A1 for girls. We also found significant reductions in age at pubarche in those children with higher PRS for greater DHEAS based on these newly identified variants. CONCLUSION Our results disclose one variant associated with DHEAS concentrations at the level of genome-wide association study significance, and several variants with a suggestive association that may be involved in the genetic regulation of adrenarche.

Abstract
The understanding of the interplay between crystal structure and electronic structure in semiconductor materials is of great importance due to their potential technological applications. Pressure is an ideal external control parameter to tune the crystal structures of semiconductor materials in order to investigate their emergent piezo-electrical and optical properties. Accordingly, we investigate here the high-pressure behavior of the semiconducting antiferromagnetic material β-Cu2V2O7, finding it undergoes a pressure-induced phase transition to γ-Cu2V2O7 below 4000 atm. The pressure-induced structural and electronic evolutions are investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, absorption spectroscopy and ab initio density functional theory calculations. β-Cu2V2O7 has previously been suggested as a promising photocatalyst for water splitting. Now, these new results suggest that β-Cu2V2O7 could also be of interest with regards to barocaloric effects, due to the low phase -transition pressure, in particular because it is a multiferroic material. Moreover, the phase transition involves an electronic band gap decrease of approximately 0.2 eV (from 1.93 to 1.75 eV) and a large structural volume collapse of approximately 7%.

Abstract
Objetivo. Evaluar un modelo predictivo de sintomatología postraumática (SPT) y de crecimiento postraumático (CPT), que incluía variables psicológicas, relacionadas con la pandemia y con las clases virtuales, en estudiantes de educación superior durante la pandemia. Método. Participaron 552 estudiantes cuya mayoría corresponde a un 68.5% de mujeres. Se aplicaron instrumentos para medir distintas variables psicológicas. Resultados. Se estableció que un modelo predictivo que incluía la rumiación intrusiva y deliberada, la severidad subjetiva, la supresión emocional, la revaluación cognitiva, el apoyo social, un espacio adecuado para conectarse a clases en línea y el nivel de estudios predecía en forma significativa la SPT. La rumiación deliberada, el apoyo social, la reevaluación cognitiva y la edad predecían el CPT. Se discute la relevancia de estos resultados para el apoyo que se podría brindar a los estudiantes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify preoperative factors that influence the outcomes of gastric bypass surgery, in terms of excess weight loss at 24 months. METHODS This retrospective study included two groups of patients who underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. Group A (poor outcomes) had ≤ 50%EWL or BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2; group B (excellent outcomes) had ≥ 80%EWL at 24 months. A comparative analysis of demography, anthropometry, comorbidities, and metabolic status was performed. A linear regression model was used to evaluate %EWL association; the number of preoperative and postoperative consultations were also compared. RESULTS A total of 202 patients completed follow-up; 71 (35.1%) and 78 (38%) had poor and excellent outcomes (%EWL 44.1 ± 9.4% vs. 92 ± 10.9%), respectively. Mean age was 40.4 ± 8.9 years. Patients with poor outcomes had higher weight and BMI, lesser preoperative %EWL, higher dyslipidemia and diabetes rates with longer periods of evolution, and increased HbA1c% levels. In the linear regression analysis, preoperative %EWL and initial and preoperative BMI were statistically significant determinants of %EWL at 24 months Diabetes remission was 46.2% (group A) vs. 66.6% (group B). Group A had higher non-attendance rates after surgery. CONCLUSION The factors independently associated with greater %EWL at 24 months between groups were higher preoperative %EWL, and lower initial and preoperative BMI.

Abstract
DNA vaccination is one of the most fascinating vaccine strategies currently in development. Two of the main advantages of DNA immunization rely on its simplicity and flexibility, being ideal to dissect both the immune mechanisms and the antigens involved in protection against a given pathogen. Here we describe several strategies used to enhance the immune responses induced and the protection afforded by experimental DNA vaccines tested in swine and provide very basic protocols describing the generation and in vivo application of a prototypic DNA vaccine. The future will say the last word regarding the definitive implementation of DNA vaccination in the field.

Abstract
The density and compressibility of nanoscale gold (both nanospheres and nanorods) and microscale gold (bulk) were simultaneously studied by X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation up to 30 GPa. Colloidal stability (aggregation state and nanoparticle shape and size) in both hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic regions was monitored by small-angle X-ray scattering. We demonstrate that nonhydrostatic effects due to solvent solidification had a negligible influence on the stability of the nanoparticles. Conversely, nonhydrostatic effects produced axial stresses on the nanoparticle up to a factor 10× higher than those on the bulk metal. Working under hydrostatic conditions (liquid solution), we determined the equation of state of individual nanoparticles. From the values of the lattice parameter and bulk modulus, we found that gold nanoparticles are slightly denser (0.3%) and stiffer (2%) than bulk gold: V0 = 67.65(3) Å3, K0 = 170(3)GPa, at zero pressure.

Abstract
We investigate the electronic structure of Cs2CuCl4, a material discussed in the framework of a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet, by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and density functional theory (DFT). From the non-dispersive highly localizedddexcitations, we resolve the crystal field splitting of the Cu2+ions in a strongly distorted tetrahedral coordination. This allows us to model the RIXS spectrum within the crystal field theory (CFT), assign theddorbital excitations and retrieve experimentally the values of the crystal field splitting parametersDq,DsandDτ. The electronic structure obtainedab-initioagrees with the RIXS spectrum and modelled by CFT, highlighting the potential of combined spectroscopic, cluster and DFT calculations to determine the electronic ground state of complex materials.

Abstract
Anti-Ma2 encephalitis is a rare neurological disorder with a predominant involvement of brainstem, limbic and diencephalic structures. Although an unspecific encephalopathy is the usual form of presentation, acute-onset neurologic symptoms and other atypical manifestations have been described and account for the challenging diagnosis of this entity. Despite being usually detected as a paraneoplastic syndrome in patients with early-stage tumors or without a previous history of malignancy, a growing concern has arisen from several cases reported in metastatic patients under treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. We report what to our knowledge is the first known case of anti-Ma2 encephalitis associated to pembrolizumab and presenting as an acute-onset focal neurological syndrome, consisting on acute global aphasia, right upper limb paresia, hypoacusia, sleep disorder, decreased conscious level and a motor focal status that was refractory to anticonvulsant therapy. A brain MRI scan showed a focal alteration of the cortical-subcortical signal on the left parietal lobe. CSF study found a significant hyperproteinorrhachia and electroencephalography showed lateralized periodic discharges (LPDs), suggestive of a diffuse encephalopathy. A positive result for anti-Ma2 antibodies was obtained both in blood and CSF samples through indirect immune-fluorescence (IFI) and later confirmed by western-blot technique. Our patient obtained a mild response to steroid therapy and a significant improvement after the administration of intravenous immunoglobulins. The hypothesis that checkpoint inhibitors may trigger the expression of previously subclinical paraneoplastic events, through the strengthening of cytotoxic T cells-mediated immune response, is supported by our finding of preexisting anti-Ma2 antibodies in preserved blood samples obtained before the initiation of pembrolizumab in our patient. Further research is needed to reveal if the detection of onconeural antibodies prior to a treatment with checkpoint inhibitors may be used as a predictive biomarker of neurologic immune-related high-grade toxicity.

Study question
Is it possible for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to match the performance of clinicians in prescribing the first dose of follitropin?
Summary answer
The AI based Decision Support System (DSS) we developed identifies accurately the optimal starting dose range of follitropin and prospectively matches the clinicians’ performance.
What is known already
Most patients treated by IVF undergo Controlled Ovarian Stimulation (COS). Based on their ovarian markers, demographic characteristics, and clinical history, an initial dose of follitropin is prescribed. Failing to tailor correctly this dose can result in a suboptimal ovarian response, leading on the one hand to low and ineffective response or, on the other, to excessive and dangerous stimulation. AI methods can learn from large databases of COS results and generate predictive models to assist the clinicians in optimizing this decision.
Study design, size, duration
A database of 2713 first IVF cycles from 5 clinics, from 2011 to 2019 was used to develop the model. Predictor variables included: age, BMI, AMH, FSH, LH, estradiol, Antral Follicular Count (AFC), infertility etiology, and previous live births. 80% of the database was used to train the algorithm, and 20% to test the DSS. Additional 524 cycles from a different period (2020–2021) were used for prospective validation.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Follitropin dosage was divided in 4 categories: 100–150IU, 151–200IU, 201–250IU, and >250IU. An optimal ovarian response is defined as retrieving 10–15 MII, whenever the patient ovarian reserve allows it. To predict the optimal dose range personalized to each patient, the DSS uses a Random Forest model learned with training cycles. To evaluate the DSS performance, a score for each dose range and each patient was defined given the prescribed doses and the corresponding ovarian responses.
Main results and the role of chance
The cycles included in the database were from women 37.2±4.9 years old [18–45], with a BMI of 23.7±4.2, AMH of 2.4±2.3, AFC of 11.8±7.7; the average number of oocytes and MII obtained was 10.1±7.1 and 7.2±5.3, respectively. The DSS achieved a performance mean score of 0.88 in the testing database, a value significantly better than the one calculated for the doses prescribed by the clinicians, which had a mean score of 0.83 (p-value <0.05). In the validation database the mean performance score of the DSS recommendations was 0.87, and there were no significant differences with the score of the doses actually prescribed by clinicians, also with a score of 0.86. With these results the model was shown to at least match the performance of the human doctor. It is worthy of note that the performance score value for the doses prescribed by clinicians in the validation database is relevantly higher than in the test database, closing the gap previously existing with the DSS performance. As the validation cycles are separated temporally from the rest of the cases and correspond to the newer ones, it is plausible to infer that a more experienced clinical staff would perform better.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The DSS prospective validation should be extended to more clinical cases to ensure higher reliability. Hyper-responders were underrepresented in the database which can lead to less accurate recommendation in some of these women. As all AI models, the DSS should be tested prospectively before clinical application.
Wider implications of the findings: The AI based clinical Decision Support System that we developed could be deployed as a training and learning tool for new clinicians and serve as quality control for experienced ones; further, it can be used as an electronic second opinion, for instance by providing information in peer-to-peer case discussions.

Abstract
Teleost fish have been traditionally considered primitive vertebrates compared to mammals and birds in regard to brain complexity and behavioral functions. However, an increasing amount of evidence suggests that teleosts show advanced cognitive capabilities including spatial navigation skills that parallel those of land vertebrates. Teleost fish rely on a multiplicity of sensory cues and can use a variety of spatial strategies for navigation, ranging from relatively simple body-centered orientation responses to allocentric or "external world-centered" navigation, likely based on map-like relational memory representations of the environment. These distinct spatial strategies are based on separate brain mechanisms. For example, a crucial brain center for egocentric orientation in teleost fish is the optic tectum, which can be considered an essential hub in a wider brain network responsible for the generation of egocentrically referenced actions in space. In contrast, other brain centers, such as the dorsolateral telencephalic pallium of teleost fish, considered homologue to the hippocampal pallium of land vertebrates, seem to be crucial for allocentric navigation based on map-like spatial memory. Such hypothetical relational memory representations endow fish's spatial behavior with considerable navigational flexibility, allowing them, for example, to perform shortcuts and detours.

Abstract
Noonan syndrome is characterized by multiple phenotypic features, including growth retardation, which represents the main cause of consultation to the clinician. Longitudinal growth during childhood and adolescence depends on several factors, among them an intact somatotrophic axis, which is characterized by an adequate growth hormone (GH) secretion by the pituitary, subsequent binding to its receptor, proper function of the post-receptor signaling pathway for this hormone (JAK-STAT5b and RAS/MAPK), and ultimately by the production of its main effector, insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Several studies regarding the function of the somatotrophic axis in patients with Noonan syndrome and data from murine models, suggest that partial GH insensitivity at a post-receptor level, as well as possible derangements in the RAS/MAPK pathway, are the most likely causes for the growth failure in these patients. Treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) has been used extensively to promote linear growth in these patients. Numerous treatment protocols have been employed so far, but the published studies are quite heterogeneous regarding patient selection, length of treatment, and dose of rhGH utilized, so the true benefit of GH therapy is somewhat difficult to establish. This review will discuss the possible etiologies for the growth delay, as well as the outcomes following rhGH treatment in patients with Noonan syndrome.

Abstract
Glaesserella (Haemophilus) parasuis, an early colonizer of the nasal cavity in piglets, is a highly heterogeneous species, comprising both commensal and virulent strains. Virulent G. parasuis strains can cause fibrinous polyserositis called Glässer’s disease. Colostrum is a source of passive immunity for young piglets. When vaccinating sows, protective antibodies are transferred to their offspring through the colostrum. Here, sow vaccination was performed with a protein fragment, F4, from the outer membrane trimeric autotransporters VtaAs exclusively found in virulent G. parasuis. Piglets were allowed to suckle for 3 weeks, following which a challenge with two virulent strains of G. parasuis was performed. A group of nonvaccinated sows and their piglets were included as a control. Antibodies against F4 were confirmed using ELISA in the vaccinated sows and their offspring before the G. parasuis challenge. Compared to the control group, F4-vaccination also resulted in an increased level of serum TGF-β both in vaccinated sows and in their offspring at early time points of life. After the challenge, a lower body temperature and a higher weight were observed in the group of piglets from vaccinated sows. One piglet from the non-vaccinated group succumbed to the infection, but no other significant differences in clinical signs were noticed. At necropsy, performed 2 weeks after the virulent challenge, the level of surfactant protein D (SP-D) in bronchoalveolar lavage was higher in the piglets from vaccinated sows. Vaccination did not inhibit the nasal colonization of the piglets by the challenge strains.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The main complication of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is massive bleeding. Endoarterial occlusion techniques have been incorporated into the management of this pathology. Our aim was to examine the endovascular practice patterns among PAS patients treated during a 9-year period in a low-middle income country in which an interdisciplinary group's technical skills were improved with the creation of a PAS team. METHODOLOGY A retrospective cohort study including all PAS patients treated from December 2011 to November 2020 was performed. We compared the clinical results obtained according to the type of endovascular device used (group 1, internal iliac artery occlusion balloons; group 2, resuscitative endovascular balloons of the aorta; group 3, no arterial balloons due to low risk of bleeding) and according to the year in which they were attended (reflects the PAS team level of experience). A fourth group of comparisons included the woman diagnosed during a cesarean delivery and treated in a nonprotocolized way. RESULTS A total of 113 patients were included. The amount of blood loss decreased annually, with a median of 2,500 mL in 2014 (when endovascular occlusion balloons were used in all patients) and 1,394 mL in 2020 (when only 38.5% of the patients required arterial balloons). Group 3 patients (n = 16) had the lowest bleeding volume (1,245 mL) and operative time (173 minutes) of the entire population studied. Group 2 patients (n = 46) had a bleeding volume (mean, 1,700 mL) and transfusions frequency (34.8%) slightly lower than group 1 patients (n = 30) (mean of 2,000 mL and 50%, respectively). They also had lower hysterectomy frequency (63% vs. 76.7% in group 1) and surgical time (205 minutes vs. 275 in group 1) despite a similar frequency of confirmed PAS and S2 compromise. CONCLUSION Endovascular techniques used for bleeding control in PAS patients are less necessary as interdisciplinary groups improve their surgical and teamwork skills. Abstract
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a lethal disease agent that causes high mortality in swine population and devastating loss in swine industries. The development of efficacious vaccines has been hindered by the gap in knowledge concerning genetic variation of ASFV and the genetic factors involved in host adaptation and virus-host interactions. In this study, we performed a meta-genetic study of ASFV aiming to profile the variation landscape and identify genetic factors with signatures of positive selection and relevance to host adaptation. Our data reveal a high level of genetic variability of ASFV shaped by both diversifying selection and selective sweep. The selection signatures are widely distributed across the genome with the diversifying selection falling within 29 genes and selection sweep within 25 genes, highlighting strong signals of adaptive evolution of ASFV. Further examination of the sequence properties reveals the link of the selection signatures with virus-host interactions and adaptive flexibility. Specifically, we discovered a site at 157th of the key antigen protein EP402R under diversifying selection, which is located in the cytotoxic T-cell epitope related to the low level of cross-reaction in T-cell response. Importantly, two multigene families MGF360 and MGF505, the host range factors of ASFV, exhibit divergent selection among the paralogous members, conferring sequence pools for genetic diversification and adaptive capability. By integrating the genes with selection signatures into a unified framework of interactions between ASFV and hosts, we showed that the genes are involved in multiple processes of host immune interaction and virus life cycles, and may play crucial roles in circumventing host defence systems and enhancing adaptive fitness. Our findings will allow enhanced understanding of genetic basis of rapid spreading and adaptation of ASFV among the hosts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in controlling pelvic bleeding has been reported with increasing frequency during surgical management of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). The deployment of REBOA may lead to significant variations in vital signs requiring special care by anesthesiology during surgery. These modifications of blood pressure by REBOA in PAS patients have not been accurately documented. We report the changes in blood pressure that occur when the aorta is occluded and then released in patients with PAS. METHODOLOGY This prospective, observational study includes 10 patients with preoperative PAS suspicion who underwent prophylactic REBOA device insertion between April 2018 and October 2019. REBOA procedural-related data and blood pressure fluctuations under invasive monitoring before and after inflation and deflation were recorded in the operating room. RESULTS After prophylactic REBOA deployment in zone 3 of the aorta in PAS patients, we observed a transitory increase in blood pressure (median increase of 22.5 mmHg in SBP and 9.5 mmHg in DBP), which reached severe hypertension (SBP >160 mmHg) in 50% of patients. All patients presented a decrease in blood pressure after the removal of the aortic occlusion (median decrease of 23 mmHg in SBP and 10.5 mmHg in DBP), and 50% (five patients) required the administration of vasopressor drugs. CONCLUSION Immediately after aortic occlusion is applied in zone 3 in PAS patients and after the occlusion is removed, significant hemodynamic changes occur, which often lead to therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
The development of subunit vaccines against African swine fever (ASF) is mainly hindered by the lack of knowledge regarding the specific ASF virus (ASFV) antigens involved in protection. As a good example, the identity of ASFV-specific CD8+ T-cell determinants remains largely unknown, despite their protective role being established a long time ago. Aiming to identify them, we implemented the IFNγ ELISpot as readout assay, using as effector cells peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from pigs surviving experimental challenge with Georgia2007/1. As stimuli for the ELISpot, ASFV-specific peptides or full-length proteins identified by three complementary strategies were used. In silico prediction of specific CD8+ T-cell epitopes allowed identifying a 19-mer peptide from MGF100-1L, as frequently recognized by surviving pigs. Complementarily, the repertoire of SLA I-bound peptides identified in ASFV-infected porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs), allowed the characterization of five additional SLA I-restricted ASFV-specific epitopes. Finally, in vitro stimulation studies using fibroblasts transfected with plasmids encoding full-length ASFV proteins, led to the identification of MGF505-7R, A238L and MGF100-1L as promiscuously recognized antigens. Interestingly, each one of these proteins contain individual peptides recognized by surviving pigs. Identification of the same ASFV determinants by means of such different approaches reinforce the results presented here.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Damage control surgery (DCS) has emerged as a new option in the management of non-traumatic peritonitis patients to increase survival in critically ill patients. The purpose of this study was to compare DCS with conventional strategy (anastomosis/ostomies in the index laparotomy) for severe non-traumatic peritonitis regarding postoperative complications, ostomy rate, and mortality and to propose a useful algorithm in the clinical practice. METHODS Patients who underwent an urgent laparotomy for non-trauma peritonitis at a single level I trauma center in Colombia between January 2003 and December 2018, were retrospectively included. We compared patients who had DCS management versus definitive initial surgical management (DISM) group. We evaluated clinical outcomes and morbidities among groups. RESULTS 290 patients were included; 81 patients were treated with DCS and 209 patients underwent DISM. Patients treated with DCS had a worse critical status before surgery with higher SOFA score [median, DCS group: 5 (IQR: 3-8) vs. DISM group: 3 (IQR: 1-6), p < 0.001]. The length of hospital stay and overall mortality rate of DCS group were not significant statistical differences with DISM group. Complications rate related to primary anastomosis or primary ostomy was similar. There is not difference in ostomy rate among groups. At multivariate analysis, SOFA > 6 points and APACHE-II > 20 points correlated with a higher probability of DCS. CONCLUSION DCS in severe non-trauma peritonitis patients is feasible and safe as surgical strategy management without increasing mortality, length hospital of stay, or complications. DCS principles might be applied in the non-trauma scenarios without increase the stoma rate.

Abstract
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is the causative agent of a devastating hemorrhagic disease (ASF) that affects both domestic pigs and wild boars. Conversely, ASFV circulates in a subclinical manner in African wild pigs, including warthogs, the natural reservoir for ASFV. Together with genetic differences, other factors might be involved in the differential susceptibility to ASF observed among Eurasian suids (Sus scrofa) and African warthogs (Phacochoerus africanus). Preliminary evidence obtained in our laboratory and others, seems to confirm the effect that environmental factors might have on ASF infection. Thus, domestic pigs raised in specific pathogen-free (SPF) facilities were extremely susceptible to highly attenuated ASFV strains that were innocuous to genetically identical domestic pigs grown on conventional farms. Since gut microbiota plays important roles in maintaining intestinal homeostasis, regulating immune system maturation and the functionality of the innate/adaptive immune responses, we decided to examine whether warthog fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to domestic pigs affects host susceptibility to ASFV. The present work demonstrates that warthog FMT is not harmful for domestic weaned piglets, while it modifies their gut microbiota; and that FMT from warthogs to pigs confers partial protection against attenuated ASFV strains. Future work is needed to elucidate the protective mechanisms exerted by warthog FMT.

Abstract
In recent years, two-dimensional perovskites have received considerable attention for their potential applications for optoelectronics. Contrary to previous publications, we demonstrate that (CH3NH3)2CuCl4 hybrid organic-inorganic layered perovskite does not show any room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) under UV excitation. This statement can be extended to other perovskites with general formula AMX3 or A2MX4, based on M: Cu2+ and X: Cl- or Br-. These materials, the object of increasing interest because of their efficient light absorption in a wide UV-vis-NIR range ideal for solar cells and optoelectronics, lack PL at room temperature, in contrast to recent findings reporting PL properties in this and other similar Cu2+-related materials.

Abstract
Pr3+-doped Y2O3 nanocrystals (NCs) have been obtained via five wet-chemistry synthesis methods which were optimized in order to achieve superior optical properties. To this end, a systematic study on the influence of different reaction parameters was performed for each procedure. Specifically, precursor concentration, reaction temperature, calcination temperature, and time, among others, were analyzed. The synthesized Y2O3: Pr3+ NCs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the optical properties of such NCs were investigated by excitation, emission, and luminescence decay measurements. Concretely, emission from the 1D2 level was detected in all samples, while emission from 3PJ was absent. Finally, the effect of the synthesis methods and the reaction conditions on the luminescence decay has been discussed, and a comparative study of the different methods using the fluorescence lifetime of so-obtained Y2O3: Pr3+ NCs as a figure of merit has been carried out.

Abstract
In situ single-crystal diffraction and spectroscopic techniques have been used to study a previously unreported Cu-framework bis[1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dione]copper(ii) (CuPyr-I). CuPyr-I was found to exhibit high-pressure and low-temperature phase transitions, piezochromism, negative linear compressibility, and a pressure induced Jahn–Teller switch, where the switching pressure was hydrostatic media dependent. Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine if commercially collected liquid porcine plasma contaminated with African swine fever virus (ASFV) and fed for 14 consecutive days would infect pigs. Commercially collected liquid porcine plasma was mixed with the serum from an ASFV experimentally infected pig. To simulate the potential of pigs slaughtered being ASFV viremic but asymptomatic and passing antemortem inspection, the ratio of liquid plasma from healthy animals to serum from an ASFV infected pig used in this study represented 0.4% or 2.0% of the pigs slaughtered being viremic (Studies 1 or 2, respectively). The contaminated liquid plasma was mixed on commercial feed and pigs were fed for 14 consecutive days providing to each pig 104.3 or 105.0 TCID50 ASFV daily (Studies 1 or 2, respectively). Pigs were observed for an additional 5 or 9 days (Studies 1 or 2, respectively). In both experiments, the pigs did not become infected with ASFV during the 14d feeding period or during the subsequent observation period. In these experiments, unprocessed liquid plasma contaminated with ASFV mixed on commercial feed and fed for 14 consecutive days did not infect pigs. From our results we can conclude that the infectious dose of ASFV on feed is much higher than that previously reported, at least with ASFV-spiked raw plasma.

Abstract
Summary Objective. To evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus/Dermatophagoides farinae mixture subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). Methods. Patients received an abbreviated build-up schedule. The aims were: number, percentage, and severity of adverse reactions. Secondary outcomes included: changes in immunoglobulin titers and changes in dose-response skin prick tests. Results. Out of 289 administrations, 17% elicited any clinically relevant adverse reaction. Most of them were local reactions (LR) (9.4%) and the rest (7.6%) were systemic. Significant increases in sIgG and sIgG4 were detected in serum samples. Cutaneous reactivity decreased significantly. Conclusions. SCIT with house dust mites mixture of ROXALL Medicina España S.A. seems to have an acceptable tolerability profile, induces blocking IgG and decreases skin reactivity.

Abstract
Temperature control in buildings is usually driven by energy conservation although the occupants' comfort is also important considering its impact on productivity and health. However, energy efficiency and comfort are opposing objectives and therefore this type of problem can be resolved by means of a multiobjective optimization approach. The simulations we carried out indicate that set points optimization has the potential to reduce energy consumption in the order of 10% while also providing a comfortable work environment for the occupants.

Abstract
The gut microbiota has an important effect on poultry health and production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Colombian oregano (COO), Lippia origanoides Kunth, essential oil supplementation on broiler chicken performance and their cecal bacterial microbiome by 16S-based sequencing. Essential oil was extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Two COO levels in feed, 0 ppm control (C) and 100 ppm (O), were evaluated in 2 groups of broilers either unchallenged (U) or challenged (E) with a viable attenuated Eimeria (coccidia) oocyte vaccine. Four treatments, UC, UO, EC, and EO, were distributed among 720 one-day-old male Ross broilers randomly placed in 24 pens. Cecal contents DNA was extracted and pyrosequencing was performed following a standard procedure. Pyrosequencing data were processed, and sequence reads were phylogenetically classified. Similarity of membership and structure in the communities were calculated. At the end of the study, the greatest COO effect was found in coccidia-challenged broilers, with an OE body weight of 1,889 ± 52.4 g with respect to 1,799 ± 36.2 g for CE (P < 0.01). Broiler cecal samples were consistent in that phylum Firmicutes and class Clostridia were highly prevalent; COO had no effect on these taxa levels between the 4 treatments (P > 0.05). A positive correlation (P < 0.01) was observed between the Firmicutes:Bacteriodetes phyla ratio against body weight at 35 D of age. This study provided both positive and negative correlations between broiler body weight against some bacterial groups identified, offering perspectives regarding bacterial groups and their impact on host health and metabolism. Lippia origanoides Kunth high thymol content showed a beneficial effect on body weight and the feed conversion ratio in broilers under coccidia challenge.

Abstract
Background There is limited evidence on how active commuting is associated with health benefits in developing countries. The aim of this study therefore was to investigate the associations between active commuting and markers of adiposity and cardiometabolic risk in the Chilean adult population. Methods In total, 5157 participants from the Chilean National Health Survey 2009-10 were included in this cross-sectional study. Active commuting was measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ v2). Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were measured and used to define obesity and central obesity. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome were determined using WHO and updated ATPIII-NCEP criteria, respectively. Results The main finding of this study is that a 30 min increase in active commuting is associated with lower odds for BMI > 25.0 kg m-2 (0.93 [95% CI: 0.88-0.98, P = 0.010]). Similarly, the odds for central obesity was 0.87 [0.82-0.92, P < 0.0001]. Similar associations were found for T2D (0.81 [0.75-0.88], P < 0.0001) and metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.86 [0.80-0.92], P < 0.0001). Conclusion Our findings show that active commuting is associated with lower adiposity and a healthier metabolic profile including lower risk for obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
