Abstract
BACKGROUND There are documented links between substance use and poor educational outcomes. However, less is known about electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use in relation to academics. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to synthesize associations between e-cigarette use and academic performance among adolescents and young adults. METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched. Original research articles were included if associations between e-cigarette use and academic performance among adolescents and young adults aged 11 to 25 years were examined. Extracted data included study and participant descriptors, measures of e-cigarette use and academic performance, key findings, and study limitations. Measures of academic performance were grouped as academic achievement, academic behaviors, or cognitive attitudes. RESULTS Thirty-three studies met inclusion criteria. Most were cross-sectional (n = 28). Significant associations to e-cigarette use were identified across all categories: academic achievement (ie, school grades (n = 24)), academic behaviors (ie, school difficulties (n = 1), time spent on homework (n = 1), school suspension (n = 1), and truancy (n = 3)), and cognitive attitudes (ie, school stress (n = 1), school alienation (n = 1), and school engagement (n = 2)). Longitudinal associations were also identified in 5 prospective cohort studies: among adolescents, poor academic grades (n = 4), and truancy (n = 1) predicted future e-cigarette use, and e-cigarette use predicted future lower school grades (n = 1). CONCLUSIONS E-cigarette use during adolescence and young adulthood is associated with poor academic achievement. There is some evidence that academic achievement may predict future e-cigarette use; less evidence supports the opposite direction. Study designs are needed to support a causal connection. Investigators should consider moving from studying associations and instead look for causal evidence.

Abstract
Information visualizations are increasingly being developed by informatics researchers to communicate health information to lay audiences. For high-quality results, it is advisable to collaborate with creative professionals such as graphic designers, illustrators, or user interface/user experience designers. However, such collaborations are often a novel experience for both parties, each of which may be unfamiliar with the needs and processes of the other. We have coalesced our experiences from both the research and design perspectives to offer practical guidance in hopes of promoting the success of future collaborations. We offer suggestions for determining design needs, communicating with design professionals, and carrying out the design process. We assert that successful collaborations are predicated on careful and intentional planning at the outset of a project, a thorough understanding of each party's scope expertise, clear communication, and ample time for the design process to unfold.

Abstract
Background Depression, a relevant comorbidity with asthma, has been reported to be associated with asthma morbidity. Asthma self-management is essential to asthma control and may be negatively impacted by depression. We examined these associations in rural adolescents, a group with relatively high asthma morbidity and depressive symptoms, a population often ignored in asthma research. Methods We used baseline data from a randomized trial of an asthma intervention for adolescents in rural South Carolina (n = 197). Adolescents completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D), three indices of asthma self-management (the Asthma Prevention Index, the Asthma Management Index and the Asthma Self-Efficacy Index), and the Asthma Control Test (ACT). Poisson and linear regression tested associations between depression, self-management, and asthma control. The models controlled for demographic variables and included school as a fixed effect. Results Most participants (mean age = 16.3 ± 1.2 years) self-identified as female (68.5%) and Black (62.43%). The mean CES-D score was 19.7 ± 10.3, with 61.4% of participants at risk for depression. The depressive symptoms were significantly related to asthma control [β = -0.085, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.14 to -0.03] but not to prevention [relative risk (RR) = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.99-1.01], management (RR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.99-1.01), or self-efficacy (β = -0.002, 95% CI = -0.01 to 0.01). Conclusions In this sample of rural adolescents, as depressive symptoms increased, asthma control declined. Depressive symptoms were not associated with asthma self-management, suggesting that the aspects of self-management we assessed are not an avenue by which depression impacts asthma control. Additional research is needed to further understand the relationship between depressive symptoms, asthma self-management, and control.

Abstract
Objective To inform the development of a combined sleep and mind-body integrative health (MBIH) intervention, we explored urban adolescents' sleep experiences and perceptions of MBIH techniques. Methods We conducted eight focus groups with school-based health center patients in New York City, exploring sleep experiences; mindfulness, body awareness, tapping, acupressure, and self-hypnosis; and intervention delivery preferences. We recorded, transcribed, and analyzed the discussions applying methods from grounded theory. Results Participants (n = 25) were ages 14-17, predominantly female (64%), Latino (60%), and Black (40%). Participants reported social, physical, and internal sleep barriers, but had limited success implementing sleep improvement strategies. Participants viewed MBIH techniques positively, noted audio-guided techniques' accessibility, and were intrigued by less-familiar techniques. Preferences varied around domains of intervention delivery. Conclusion Results underscore the need for adolescent-informed interventions offering sleep improvement strategies. Participants' interest and willingness to engage in MBIH techniques present an opportunity for practitioners to develop and deliver sleep interventions incorporating MBIH components to urban adolescents. Varied intervention preferences highlight the need to be adaptable to adolescents' lived experiences, comfort levels, and learning styles. Innovation This study elucidates the perspectives of underrepresented adolescents whose perspectives on MBIH have rarely been explored, an important first step in developing tailored interventions.

Abstract
Purpose: Weight stigma is associated with poor mental and emotional health and may be especially harmful to sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals due to co-occurring minority stress. The literature on this topic has not been synthesized. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on weight stigma and mental and emotional health among SGM individuals to synthesize findings, highlight gaps, and identify clinical and research implications. Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews, we searched PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus in April 2022. Included studies examined the relationship between weight stigma and mental and emotional health among SGM people of any age. We did not restrict study design or publication date. Results: Of 513 records identified, 23 met inclusion criteria. Most focused on sexual minority individuals; one focused specifically on gender minority individuals. Weight stigma was associated with poorer mental and emotional health in nearly all studies. The most common outcomes examined were self-esteem, maladaptive eating, and depressive symptoms. Five studies, all using the same dataset, focused on adolescents; none focused on older adults. Conclusions: Weight stigma is associated with poorer mental and emotional health among SGM individuals and, through its intersections with minority stress, might impact SGM individuals differently than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts. There are important gaps regarding weight stigma's effect on SGM adolescents and gender minority individuals and its relationship with a broader range of mental and emotional health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety and depression are mental health disorders that are often comorbid with asthma. Urban African American young adults with asthma often experience increased risk of anxiety and depression. OBJECTIVE To explore relationships between symptoms of psychological distress and asthma-related anxiety with asthma outcomes among urban African American young adults with poorly controlled persistent asthma. METHODS A secondary analysis of baseline data from a larger study of 141 African American young adults with uncontrolled persistent asthma was examined. Participants completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), Youth Asthma-related Anxiety Scale, Asthma Control Test (ACT), a daily diary to assess asthma symptoms; and number of asthma attacks. Spirometry assessed airway obstruction. Generalized linear models tested associations. RESULTS In multivariable models testing, higher somatization scores were significantly associated with lower ACT scores (adjusted β = -0.49; 95% CI = -0.69, -0.28; p < 0.01), and higher symptoms (adjusted β = 0.39; 95% CI = 0.14, 0.65; p < 0.01). After adding asthma-related anxiety to the model, the somatization subscale and asthma-related anxiety were significantly associated with ACT scores (adjusted β = -0.36; 95% CI = -0.57, -0.15; p < 0.01), (adjusted β = -0.32; 95% CI = -0.50, -0.14; p < 0.01), respectively. Asthma-related anxiety was also significantly associated with asthma attacks (adjusted β = 0.24; 95% CI = 0.05, 0.43; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study suggests, asthma-related anxiety may differ from general anxiety and be related to poorly controlled asthma among African American young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND African American emerging adults tend to have low adherence to asthma controller medication, as well as a disproportionate burden of asthma morbidity and mortality. This study explored constructs from the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model as predictors of controller medication adherence in urban African Americans ages 18-29 (N=152) with uncontrolled asthma using multiple measures of self-reported adherence. METHODS Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized mediation model that specified the relationship among psychological distress, substance use, asthma knowledge, motivation, self-efficacy, and adherence. RESULTS Results suggested that motivation is an important predictor of adherence to medication; moreover, higher self-efficacy was associated with higher motivation. Results also highlighted psychological distress as an important intervention target to improve medication adherence in emerging adults. CONCLUSIONS The model tested in this study may offer a feasible framework for beginning to understand adherence to controller medication in this population.

Abstract
Racial and ethnic minority adolescents living in urban settings experience sleep disparities. Few interventions have been developed to address these disparities. Guided by principles of participatory design and inclusion, our team developed a novel intervention that combined sleep hygiene education with mind-body integrative health (MBIH) practices to improve sleep quality among adolescents in New York City. The goal of this article is to describe our iterative development and design process, the final product, and future directions. Our participatory approach incorporated information from formative work with adolescents having lived experience, practitioners, and syntheses of published literature. The final intervention-Sleeping Healthy, Living Healthy-consists of six, 40-minute group sessions and one 20-minute individual session designed for high school students. Each session has a set of learning objectives, combining instruction, group activities, and discussions on sleep hygiene and MBIH topics. Our manualized intervention includes handouts created by a graphic design team that served as a review and reminder for home practice. We describe intervention implementation to two unique cohorts and detail our methods used to fine-tune the intervention between cohorts. Our partnership with and insights from both adolescents and practitioners serve as a guide for researchers aiming to use participatory methods to develop interventions to decrease health disparities in specific populations.

Abstract
Sexual minority adolescents are more likely to have obesity compared to their heterosexual peers, but little is known about potential contributors to this disparity that lie outside of individual-level health behaviors, such as diet and exercise. One possible contributor is school violence victimization, a factor associated with overweight/obesity in adolescence. Another possible contributor is school climate, which is associated with feelings of safety and connectedness that can lower the likelihood of school violence victimization. Moreover, even less is known about relationships among all these factors among sexual minority adolescents. This gap in the literature was addressed by analyzing CDC's district-level data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and School Health Profiles (N = 60,625; 50.9% female, Mage = 16 years, 84.7% heterosexual, 15.3% sexual minority). Using multilevel mixed effects logistic regression models and controlling for covariates, it was found that among females and males, those with 2+ counts of last 12-month school violence victimization had higher odds of obesity than those with no school violence victimization (AOR = 1.33; AOR = 1.24). Furthermore, females and males in more positive LGBTQ school climates had lower odds of obesity than those in less positive school climates (AOR = 0.84; AOR = 0.85). There were no sexual identity differences in these models. Findings support the careful consideration of school violence victimization and LGBTQ school climate in future obesity prevention initiatives.

Abstract
Background: Asthma and COVID-19 have overlapping symptoms. During the 2019-2022 pandemic, pediatric asthma control appears to have improved, with some researchers theorizing that that is due to changes in asthma self-management. This study examined adolescents' views regarding how the pandemic impacted their asthma severity and self-management. Differences by urbanicity, sex, and race/ethnicity were explored. Methods: We utilized baseline data from adolescents with poorly controlled asthma (n = 183) who were participating in 1 of 2 school-based clinical trials-1 in rural schools and 1 in urban schools-testing the impact of interventions to improve asthma control. Adolescents reported if they believed their asthma severity remained the same, improved, or worsened during the pandemic, and if it changed, how it changed. They also reported if and how they modified their asthma management since the pandemic. We used multinomial logistic regression and binary logistic regression to assess the relationship between demographic factors and changes in asthma severity during the pandemic, and if adolescents altered their asthma management. Results: Adolescents' mean age was 15.9 years; most lived in rural communities (65.6%) and identified as female (66.7%). About half (56.2%) self-identified as black, 13.1% as Hispanic, and 10.4% as another race/ethnicity. Most (68.4%) reported that their asthma severity remained unchanged; 26.0% reported it worsened. Nearly 30% reported they altered how they managed their asthma, with most (80%) reporting additional efforts. Compared with asthma remaining the same, females had a higher relative risk than males of reporting that their asthma worsened [adjusted relative risk ratio = 3.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.34-9.90, P < 0.05]. Urban youth had greater odds (adjusted odds ratio = 5.4, 95% CI = 2.0-14.5, P < 0.001) of reporting they changed their asthma self-management compared with rural peers. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that during the 2019-2022 pandemic, adolescents generally believed their asthma severity stayed consistent and many took additional self-management efforts.

Abstract
In a study of conflict recovery and adolescent dating aggression, 14- to 18-year-old couples (N = 209 dyads) participated in a 1-hr observational assessment. Negative behavior was observed during conflict-evoking "hot" tasks and in a "cooldown" task. Physical and psychological dating aggression were assessed via questionnaires. Negative behavior measured in the cooldown task was not associated with dating aggression after controlling for carryover effects of negativity from the hot to cooldown tasks. Moreover, cooldown negativity moderated the associations of hot task negativity and dating aggression. Actor and partner effects were disentangled via dyadic data analyses. Given the paucity of observational studies of dating aggression, our findings are an important contribution to the literature and in need of replication and extension.

Abstract
African American emerging adults (age 18-29 years) tend to have poor asthma outcomes, possibly due to poor adherence to medication. Few studies have explored barriers to controller adherence in this population. This study utilized electronic daily diaries to assess barriers to adherence and asthma symptoms among 141 African American emerging adults with uncontrolled persistent asthma and poor adherence. Participants reported symptoms M = 3.43 days (of 7 days). They reported unintentional (e.g., forgetting) and intentional (e.g., choosing not to take) barriers to adherence, but forgetting, being too busy, and sleeping through a dose were the most common. Significant correlations were found between symptoms and barriers, as well as asthma control and medication adherence in the expected directions. Asthma symptoms and number of barriers were significant predictors of asthma control. Existing intervention strategies such as text-messaging may prove effective to address these barriers, but measuring and addressing adherence remains complex.

Abstract
Black youth and rural adolescents are two groups who experience asthma disparities. Racism and discrimination in health care likely lead to group-based (systems-level) medical mistrust for some adolescents. Group-based medical mistrust, one pathway by which racism drives health inequities, is associated with poorer outcomes for patients with chronic conditions. Despite its potential importance in adolescent asthma, previous research has not considered group-based medical mistrust in this population. To fill this gap, we characterize group-based medical mistrust among rural adolescents with poorly controlled asthma, examining demographic differences. We analyzed baseline data from a school-based clinical trial in which 164 adolescents (mean age = 16.3; 76.2% Black) completed the Group-Based Medical Mistrust Scale (GBMMS). Using linear regression, we tested associations with race, gender, and age, controlling for recent medical visits and insurance status. The total GBMMS mean score was 2.3 (SD = 1.22); subscale scores ranged from 2.3 to 2.4. Black adolescents reported significantly higher total GBMMS scores (β = .45, p = .003) and significantly higher scores on two GBMMS subscales: suspicion of health care providers (β = .56, p = .007) and lack of support from health care providers (β = .36, p = .007). Gender and age were not associated with GBMMS scores. Health care providers need to consider medical mistrust and its role in their clinical care. Together with their institutions, health care providers and researchers should work toward changing systems that perpetuate racism to build trust as a means of reducing asthma disparities among adolescents.

Abstract
We conducted an observational study of a collection of interactive processes known as "demand-withdraw" in relation to adolescent dating aggression. Couples (N = 209) aged 14-18 years participated in a challenging observational laboratory assessment to measure demands (i.e., pressures for a change), as well as demand → partner withdraw and demand → partner avoid sequences. Actor and partner effects were disentangled via dyadic data analyses. The results indicated a fairly consistent pattern in which demand → withdraw and demand → avoid sequences led by either partner were positively associated with both partners' physical and psychological aggression (measured via a dual informant questionnaire method). Further, higher quality demands (i.e., pressures for change that were specific and encouraged both members of the dyad to increase a given behavior) were inversely associated with aggression. Yet, all of the above associations were attenuated to the point of statistical nonsignificance after controlling for hostility. These results suggest two primary possibilities. The associations of demand → withdraw and demand → avoid sequences with dating aggression may be spurious, with the sequences merely markers for hostility, a known correlate of dating aggression. Alternatively, hostility may mediate the relations of demand → withdraw and demand → avoid sequences with dating aggression. Further research is required to test these competing explanations. Implications for preventive intervention are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We characterized bullying among rural adolescents and examined the association between asthma and bullying victimization. METHODS Participants (N = 1905; 44.5% Black) were students attending rural high schools who were screened for a randomized trial to address uncontrolled asthma. Screening questions asked students about asthma diagnosis and symptoms, bullying victimization, and demographic characteristics. Logistic regression analyses with school as a fixed effect were employed to examine the extent to which demographic factors, asthma diagnosis, asthma status (i.e. current asthma, no asthma, possible undiagnosed asthma), and among those with current asthma, asthma severity, were associated with bullying victimization. Sensitivity analyses using bullying frequency as the outcome were also conducted. RESULTS 26.0% reported being bullied. Younger age and self-identifying as White were associated with increased risk of bullying victimization. Compared to those with no asthma, those with current asthma or possible undiagnosed asthma were at increased risk for bullying victimization (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.46; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.76-3.46 and AOR = 2.42; 95% CI = 1.87-3.14, respectively). Among those with current asthma, persistent symptoms increased the risk for bullying victimization (AOR = 2.59; 95% CI = 1.45-4.71). Similar results were obtained with sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS In a large rural community cohort, asthma was associated with bullying victimization. Findings suggest that rural students with asthma, with or without diagnosis, could benefit from schools creating inclusive environments that reduce victimization based on this medical condition. School administrators should foster environments that are accepting of all students' abilities and statuses, and healthcare providers can provide proper asthma management education to these adolescents.

Abstract
People of African descent and those identifying as Black and/or Latino experience a disproportionate burden of sickle cell disease (SCD), a chronic, serious blood condition. Caregivers of children with chronic medical conditions report worse mental health than others. Disease-associated stressors can affect caregivers of children with SCD. We conducted a systematic review to summarize the prevalence of mental health symptoms in caregivers of children with SCD and to see if symptoms were associated with the child's SCD. This review is reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase, identifying 1,322 records of which 40 met criteria for inclusion in this review. Findings suggest caregivers experience mental health problems, and poorer mental health was associated with worse child SCD-related outcomes and treatment adherence. Efforts should be made to routinely screen SCD caregiver mental health and to refer accordingly.

Abstract
Adolescents get insufficient sleep, adversely affecting health. Mind-body integrative health interventions for adolescents have been shown to reduce stress, a barrier to good sleep. This scoping review aimed to synthesize mind-body integrative health interventions for adolescents, how interventions were implemented, who was reached. A systematic search of four online databases was conducted. Randomized, quasi-experimental, and single-group designs with participants ages 10-24 years were included. Twelve studies covering 10 interventions using mindfulness, qigong, aromatherapy, or yoga were identified. Participants were predominantly female; only one study reported participants' race or ethnicity (81% non-Hispanic white). Most (n=6) interventions were delivered in groups, and half reported significant improvements in subjective sleep quality. Mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy were the most commonly used modalities, with reported impact on sleep outcomes measured objectively. The two interventions that found statistically significant, moderate improvements in objectively-measured sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency were of higher intensity and used mindfulness. Four interventions were self-directed; participants in these struggled with adherence; significant impacts on sleep were not found. While findings were mixed, stemming in part from the quality of the underlying studies, this review identified several promising features of interventions, including using mindfulness, ensuring sufficient intervention dose, and targeting interventions towards adolescents with poor sleep at baseline (rather than a general population of adolescents). The findings suggests that sleep interventions for adolescents may improve psychological well-being as an intermediate effect, as sleep improvements were observed mostly among participants with poor sleep quality or anxiety symptoms at baseline. This review identified several gaps in the literature. Despite documented racial and ethnic disparities in sleep quality among adolescents, published evidence of mind-body integrative health-based sleep interventions among Black and Latinx adolescents is lacking. None of the studies in this review assessed developmental stage or age differences, despite documented differences in sleep across age groups of adolescents. These two gaps in the evidence should be addressed in future intervention research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the 1930's the United States (US) sponsored Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) created maps that determined risk for mortgage lending based on the racial and ethnic composition of neighborhoods leading to disinvestment in "redlined" or highest risk neighborhoods. This historical practice has perpetuated racial and economic segregation, and health disparities, that persist today. Interventions near schools where children spend large portions of the day, could impact large groups of children but schools are an often-overlooked environment for exposure. Despite a declining trend of ambient pollution in New York City (NYC) between 1998 and 2012, little is known about differences in air quality improvement near schools by historical redlining neighborhood status. Our objective was to examine if recent temporal trends of air pollution near NYC public schools differed in historically redlined neighborhoods. METHODS We examined annual average street-level concentrations of combustion-related air pollutants (black carbon (BC), particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitric oxide (NO)), within a 250-m radius around schools using NYC Community Air Survey land-use regression models (n = 1,462). Year of monitoring, historical redlining (binary), and summer ozone were included in multivariable linear regression using generalized estimating equation models. Average annual percent change (APC) in pollutant concentration was calculated. Models were further stratified by historical redlining and a multiplicative interaction term (year of monitoring × historical redlining) was used to assess effect modification. RESULTS Overall, there was a decreasing trend of BC (APC = -4.40%), PM2.5 (-3.92%), NO2 (-2.76%), and NO (-6.20%) during the 10-year period. A smaller reduction of BC, PM2.5 and NO was observed in redlined neighborhoods (n = 722), compared to others (n = 740): BC (APC: -4.11% vs -4.69%; Pinteraction < 0.01), PM2.5 (-3.82% vs -4.11%; Pinteraction < 0.01), and NO (-5.73% vs -6.67%; Pinteraction < 0.01). Temporal trends of NO2 did not differ by historical redlining (Pinteraction = 0.60). CONCLUSIONS Despite significant reductions in annual average pollution concentrations across NYC, schools in historically redlined neighborhoods, compared to others, experienced smaller decrease in pollution, highlighting a potential ongoing ramification of the discriminatory practice.

Abstract
Rural adolescents with asthma are a disparate group. Self-management is essential to asthma control. We describe asthma knowledge, self-efficacy, and self-management behaviors among 198 rural adolescents with poorly controlled asthma, exploring demographic differences; we also test the application of Social Cognitive Theory to asthma self-management examining if self-efficacy mediates associations between knowledge and self-management. Asthma knowledge and self-management were relatively poor in our sample, particularly among male and White adolescents; greater knowledge was significantly associated with better symptom prevention and management. Self-efficacy partially mediated the association between knowledge and symptom prevention, but not acute symptom management, suggesting that knowledge may not improve symptom prevention behaviors without confidence to implement such behaviors and that factors beyond knowledge and self-efficacy likely play a role in asthma self-management in this population. Addressing asthma knowledge and self-efficacy could improve self-management and, ultimately, enhance asthma control among rural adolescents with poorly controlled asthma.

Abstract
Anxiety and depressive symptoms are associated with asthma-related acute care utilization. Few studies include rural adolescents. Asthma control may be the mechanism by which mental health affects acute care. This study explored associations between generalized anxiety, asthma-related anxiety, depressive symptoms, and acute care visits, and tested if asthma control mediates these associations among 197 rural adolescents with asthma. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and regression. Controlling for age, sex and race/ethnicity, asthma-related anxiety was associated with higher odds of acute care visits (OR = 2.09, 95% CI [1.42, 3.07]). Asthma control mediated this relationship: one unit increase in anxiety, on average, increased the odds of having any acute care visit by 5%. Generalized anxiety and depressive symptoms were not associated with acute care visits. Helping adolescents reduce their concerns regarding asthma while improving their self-management skill may potentially to reduce acute care among rural adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developmental assets foster positive health outcomes among adolescents, but have not been studied in adolescents with chronic illness or depression, two conditions that impact behaviors in school. We examined parent-reported assets in a national sample of adolescents and compared the number and types of assets by health statuses. METHODS Data were from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health (N = 15,734 adolescents), which captured 15 of 40 assets in the Developmental Assets Framework. We categorized adolescents as healthy; chronic physical illness alone; depression alone; and chronic physical illness with co-morbid depression. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and logistic regression. RESULTS Healthy adolescents and those with chronic physical illness alone were comparable in number and types of assets. Adolescents with chronic physical illness and co-morbid depression had fewer assets compared to healthy adolescents and those with chronic physical illness alone. Similar associations were found in comparing healthy adolescents to those with depression without chronic physical illness. CONCLUSIONS The presence of depression, among adolescents with and without chronic physical illness, was associated with fewer internal and external assets. The absence of assets may serve as a unique indicator of underlying depressive symptoms among adolescents in the school setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent asthma is highly prevalent and frequently uncontrolled despite control being achievable with good self-management. Anxiety, depression, and stress are associated with worse asthma outcomes, and may impact self-management; no previous review has examined this relationship. AIM This scoping review assessed the nature of the current literature on mental health and asthma self-management among adolescents ages 11 to 24 and synthesized their relationships. METHODS Guided by the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we systematically searched the literature using MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Scopus in September 2020 and updated it in June 2021. Included studies examined associations between anxiety, depression, and/or stress and asthma self-management in adolescents ages 11-24. We did not restrict study design, location, or date. RESULTS Out of 1559 records identified, 14 met inclusion criteria. Types of self-management included trigger control, healthcare adherence, and overall symptom prevention and management. Anxiety symptoms were associated with poorer asthma self-management in four studies, but better in three. Depressive symptoms were associated with poorer asthma self-management in five studies, but better in two. Stress was associated with poorer self-management in one study. Mental health symptoms were nearly universally associated with poorer trigger control, but associations with healthcare adherence and overall symptom prevention and management varied. CONCLUSION Mental health symptoms may facilitate or hinder asthma self-management depending on the types of mental health and self-management. Further research is needed to better understand this relationship and inform future interventions. Providers might assess mental health as a potential barrier to adolescent asthma self-management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rural adolescents are vulnerable to asthma; good self-care can reduce morbidity. The subtypes of anxiety (eg, asthma-related, generalized) may have differential associations with asthma self-care. Low self-efficacy, a determinant of behavior, is associated with increased anxiety. Little is known regarding these relationships in rural adolescents. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether anxiety symptoms are associated with asthma symptom prevention and management among rural adolescents and whether self-efficacy mediates these relationships. METHODS We used baseline data from 197 rural adolescents (mean age = 16 years; 69% girls; 62% Black) who were part of a trial that tested the effectiveness of a school-based asthma intervention. Adolescents completed the Youth Asthma-Related Anxiety Scale, Screen for Child Anxiety and Emotional Disorders, Asthma Management Self-efficacy Index, and Asthma Prevention and Management Indices. Linear regression was performed to test whether: (1) asthma-related and generalized anxiety had curvilinear relationships with self-care; (2) social and separation anxiety had linear relationships with self-care; and (3) self-efficacy mediated relationships. RESULTS Asthma-related anxiety had a significant curvilinear relationship with prevention (P = 0.001) and a linear association with management (P = .01). Generalized anxiety had a significant curvilinear association with management (P = .03), whereas social anxiety had a significant linear relationship with prevention (P = .04). Self-efficacy partially or fully mediated these relationships. CONCLUSION Anxiety symptoms were associated with asthma self-care among this sample of rural adolescents, with differing roles for prevention and management. Self-efficacy may be a mechanism to improve asthma self-care among rural adolescents with anxiety. With a lack of self-efficacy, asthma-related, generalized, or social anxiety may motivate adolescents to take steps to care for their asthma.

Abstract
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) adolescents are more likely to report suicidality and worse mental health than their heterosexual peers. We conducted a systematic review to examine the relationship between positive school climate and suicidality and mental health among LGBTQ adolescents. We searched the literature using PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. Six studies met inclusion criteria, and all had low to moderate risks of bias. Results indicate that LGBTQ students in schools with more positive school climates were at lower risk of suicidality and reported fewer depressive symptoms compared to students in less positive school climates. Being at the forefront of health in schools, school nurses have the opportunity to advocate for changes in school environments that promote positive mental health for all youth, including LGBTQ adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Describe the development and preliminary impact of CAMP Air, a web-based intervention for adolescents with uncontrolled asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS CAMP Air was developed using an iterative process with input from stakeholders and incorporating usability testing results (n = 14 adolescents). To test CAMP Air's initial impact, 61 adolescents from two New York City public high schools (n = 37) and from clinics, community-based organizations, and third-party recruitment services (i.e., community sample; n = 24) were enrolled in a randomized pilot trial. Participants were randomized to CAMP Air (n = 30) or information-and-referral control intervention (n = 31). A point-person worked with school participants to complete CAMP Air. RESULTS CAMP Air participants were satisfied with the intervention and its value for supporting self-management, completing on average 6 of 7 modules. Relative to controls, CAMP Air participants demonstrated significantly improved asthma knowledge, asthma control, night wakening and school absences, and less risk for urgent care visits. Adolescents enrolled in schools completed more modules and had significantly fewer nights woken and school absences than community enrollees. CONCLUSION CAMP Air improves asthma outcomes among adolescents with uncontrolled asthma. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS A web-based intervention CAMP Air is a promising intervention. When a point-person works with adolescents, CAMP Air's access and impact are improved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developmental assets provide a framework for optimizing development among adolescents but have not been studied in adolescents with chronic illness and comorbid depression, which is a group at risk for poor health outcomes. YouTube postings provide valuable insights to understand this understudied population. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore asset development from the perspectives of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with chronic illness and comorbid depression. METHODS YouTube was searched using 12 chronic illnesses (eg, diabetes) coupled with "depression" as keywords. Videos were included if they were uploaded by AYAs aged between 11 and 29 years and discussed living with chronic illness and depression during adolescence. Video transcripts were coded deductively for 40 internal and external assets that constitute the Developmental Assets Framework. Categories not captured by deductive coding were identified using conventional content analysis. Categories and their respective assets were labeled as being discussed either negatively or positively. RESULTS In total, 31 videos from 16 AYAs met the inclusion criteria. A total of 7 asset categories, support, constructive use of time, boundaries and expectations (external assets), identity, commitment to learning, positive values, and social competence (internal assets), reflecting 25 (13 internal; 12 external) assets, were discussed. Internal assets, particularly relating to identity, were commonly discussed by AYAs either in a negative way or fluctuated between positive and negative perspectives. CONCLUSIONS In this sample of AYAs with chronic illness and comorbid depression, internal assets were commonly discussed in a negative way. Future research is needed to better understand how assets develop and if the Developmental Assets Framework adequately represents the experiences of this population.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the intervention effects of BREATHE (BRief intervention to Evaluate Asthma THErapy), a novel brief shared decision-making intervention and evaluate feasibility and acceptability of intervention procedures. DESIGN Group-randomized longitudinal pilot study. METHODS In total, 80 adults with uncontrolled persistent asthma participated in a trial comparing BREATHE (N = 40) to a dose-matched attention control intervention (N = 40). BREATHE is a one-time shared decision-making intervention delivered by clinicians during routine office visits. Ten clinicians were randomized and trained on BREATHE or the control condition. Participants were followed monthly for 3 months post-intervention. Data were collected from December 2017 - May 2019 and included surveys, lung function tests, and interviews. RESULTS Participants were Black/multiracial (100%) mostly female (83%) adults (mean age 45). BREATHE clinicians delivered BREATHE to all 40 participants with fidelity based on expert review of audiorecordings. While the control group reported improvements in asthma control at 1-month and 3-month follow-up, only BREATHE participants had better asthma control at each timepoint (β = 0.77; standard error (SE)[0.17]; p ≤ 0.0001; β = 0.71; SE[0.16]; p ≤ 0.0001; β = 0.54; SE[0.15]; p = .0004), exceeding the minimally important difference. BREATHE participants also perceived greater shared decision-making occurred during the intervention visit (β = 7.39; SE[3.51]; p = .03) and fewer symptoms at follow-up (e.g., fewer nights woken, less shortness of breath and less severity of symptoms) than the controls. Both groups reported improved adherence and fewer erroneous medication beliefs. CONCLUSION BREATHE is a promising brief tailored intervention that can be integrated into office visits using clinicians as interventionists. Thus, BREATHE offers a pragmatic approach to improving asthma outcomes and shared decision-making in a health disparity population. IMPACT The study addressed the important problem of uncontrolled asthma in a high-risk vulnerable population. Compared with the dose-matched attention control condition, participants receiving the novel brief tailored shared decision-making intervention had significant improvements in asthma outcomes and greater perceived engagement in shared decision-making. Brief interventions integrated into office visits and delivered by clinicians may offer a pragmatic approach to narrowing health disparity gaps. Future studies where other team members (e.g., office nurses, social workers) are trained in shared decision-making may address important implementation science challenges as it relates to adoption, maintenance, and dissemination. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression is prevalent among adolescents with chronic illness. However, little is known about how depression affects chronic illness over time. This review aimed to synthesize longitudinal relationships between depression and disease control, self-management behaviors, illness-related morbidity, and quality of life. METHOD Four databases were searched, including PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, and EMBASE. Inclusion criteria were cohort studies examining depression among adolescents aged 10-21 years with a chronic illness and studies published in English. Study quality was appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale and data was synthesized by the outcome. RESULTS Of the 3,463 articles identified, 11 were included in the review. For adolescents with diabetes, increased depressive symptoms predicted decreased metabolic control and monitoring, medication adherence, quality of life, and increased hospitalization. Studies on cystic fibrosis, congenital heart disease, sickle cell disease, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis were limited but demonstrated that depressive symptoms affected the quality of life, disability, pain, and hospitalization rates/costs. DISCUSSION Evidence supports the need for mental health care strategies suitable for adolescents with chronic illness. Future research is needed to examine the effects of depressive symptoms across diversified chronic illness populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interdisciplinary research among health care professionals has gained importance over the last 20 years, but little is known about its impact on career development. PURPOSE This study examined professional development outcomes associated with interdisciplinary research. METHODS An integrative review was conducted using Whittmore and Knafl's framework. PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched to identify studies. FINDINGS Thirteen studies were included. The majority used bibliometric analyses, finding that moderate level of interdisciplinary collaboration was associated with a greater amount and higher quality of publications. Interdisciplinary publications allocated more credit (i.e., had more authors). Interdisciplinary research proposals had less funding success than single discipline proposals. Important cultural and personal aspects of interdisciplinary research (e.g., work and communication styles, research goals) have not been assessed to date. DISCUSSION Rigorous qualitative studies are needed to characterize benefits and challenges of interdisciplinary research to scholars and to institutions.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study examines associations between internalizing symptoms and sleep in a sample of urban children with and without asthma, whether asthma status moderates these associations, and whether associations differ by ethnic group. METHODS Participants were Latino, African American (AA), and non-Latino white (NLW) urban 7- to 9-year-olds with (n = 259) and without (n = 122) persistent asthma. Teacher-reported internalizing symptoms (anxiety, depressive, and somatic) were assessed using the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-2. Sleep duration, variability in sleep duration, and sleep onset latency were assessed with actigraphy. RESULTS Depressive symptoms were associated with variability in sleep duration and shorter sleep onset latency; somatic symptoms were associated with variability in sleep duration. In Latino children, depressive symptoms were associated with shorter sleep onset latency. In AA children, anxiety, depressive, and somatic symptoms were associated with variability in sleep duration; somatic symptoms were related to variability in sleep duration in NLW children. The association between internalizing symptoms and sleep outcomes did not differ by asthma status. However, asthma status was a significant moderator when examining these associations by ethnic group: among AA children, depressive symptoms were significantly related to variability in sleep duration only in children with asthma, whereas in NLW children, somatic symptoms were related to variability in sleep duration only in children without asthma. CONCLUSIONS Targeting specific internalizing symptoms and sleep outcomes may be beneficial in the development of interventions tailored for urban children with and without asthma from specific ethnic groups.

Abstract
Background Hydroxyurea (HU) is recommended as standard practice for youth with sickle cell disease (SCD). Yet, despite its efficacy, HU adherence in adolescents and young adults is often poor. Poor medication adherence increases disease burden, healthcare cost and widens health disparities. Adolescence is a critical time to improve adherence through improved chronic disease self-management. This study aims to test the efficacy of an intervention delivered to youth/parent dyads by community health workers (CHWs), augmented by tailored text messages on HU adherence (primary outcome). Secondary outcomes are intervention sustainability, youth health-related quality of life, self-management responsibility concordance, acute hospital use and self-reported disease symptoms. Methods Hydroxyurea Adherence for Personal Best in Sickle Cell Disease, “HABIT,” is a 12 month multi-center randomized controlled trial. One hundred four youth, 10 to 18 years of age prescribed HU who meet eligibility criteria, enrolled with their parent as dyads, will be randomized 1:1 to either the HABIT intervention or to usual clinical care plus education handouts. All subjects will complete clinic visits at months 0, 2, 4, 6 (efficacy component), 9 and 12 (sustainability component) for assessment of HbF biomarker, other hematologic parameters, and to complete questionnaires. In addition, dyads assigned to the HABIT intervention will work with CHWs to identify a daily habit (e.g., brushing teeth) on which to build a HU adherence habit. Tailored daily text message reminders to support the habit will be developed by the dyad in collaboration with the CHWs and sent to parent and youth. At the 6 month visit, the intervention will end and the sustainability portion of the trial will begin. All data analyses will be based on intention to treat with all randomized subjects included in the analyses. Discussion Prior retrospective studies demonstrate that a majority of adolescents are poorly adherent to HU. If efficacious, the HABIT intervention has the potential to improve the lives of youth with SCD. Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov NCT03462511. Abstract
BACKGROUND Adherence to daily inhaled corticosteroid medication is important for asthma control but low health literacy is a barrier to comprehension of control status and may contribute to medication nonadherence. Infographics tailored with patients' own data can support comprehension of health status, but these have not been applied to asthma successfully. OBJECTIVES This two-phased study developed and tested tailored infographics of (1) scores on the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ), a self-report measure of symptom burden, and (2) pulmonary function test (PFT) results. The infographics are intended for use as communication and adherence-promotion tools in clinical interactions. METHODS For both phases, participants (18+ years, English- or Spanish-speaking, persistent asthma) were recruited through two primary care clinics. In Phase I, we used a hybrid iterative participatory design process to refine prototype designs. In Phase II, we conducted individual comprehension assessment interviews with the finalized designs. Infographics were hand-tailored for each participant using their ACQ score and PFT results collected at the start of the interview. Two independent raters scored interview transcripts for gist and verbatim comprehension based on a predetermined rubric. RESULTS The five Phase I design sessions led to final prototypes that participants (n = 21) considered appealing and easy to comprehend. All Phase II participants (n = 10) demonstrated complete gist and verbatim comprehension. Participants reacted favorably to receiving their information via infographics and expressed intentions to engage in self-management behaviors (e.g., medication adherence, smoking cessation, weight loss, and review of their care plan) in response to the information. CONCLUSION This study provides preliminary evidence that infographics can support comprehension of asthma control status and promote self-management intentions among adults with persistent asthma. Infographics can be programmed into electronic health records and/or standalone applications to allow for instant tailoring at the point of care.

Abstract
AIM To strengthen the theoretical understanding of illness acceptance in adolescents and to inform healthcare strategies geared toward supporting adolescents with chronic illness. BACKGROUND Illness acceptance is associated with positive health outcomes. Though well understood in adults with chronic illness, less is known about how this phenomenon ensues in adolescents. Adolescents may have a difficult time accepting an illness due to their unique developmental needs. Consequently, they are vulnerable to poor health outcomes. DESIGN Concept analysis. DATA SOURCES A literature search through 2 databases (PubMed and PsycINFO) and a hand-search through Google were conducted to identify uses of the concept. REVIEW METHODS The Walker and Avant method of concept analysis. RESULTS Four attributes of illness acceptance were identified: understanding of illness, overcoming limitations, normalization, and readiness for responsibility. Antecedents that predisposed illness acceptance included peer and family support, disease management education, and developmental readiness. Positive consequences of illness acceptance included high self-esteem, improved quality of life, resilience, identity formation, and better disease control. CONCLUSIONS Establishing a standardized conceptual understanding of how illness acceptance ensues in adolescents can enable nurses and other health professionals to tailor developmentally appropriate care strategies and optimize the overall quality of life for this unique patient population.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of the BRief Evaluation of Asthma THerapy intervention, a 7-min primary care provider-delivered shared decision-making protocol that uses motivational interviewing to address erroneous asthma disease and medication beliefs. DESIGN A multi-centre masked two-arm group-randomized clinical trial. METHODS This 2-year pilot study is funded (September 2016) by the National Institute of Nursing Research. Eight providers will be randomized to one of two arms: the active intervention (N = 4) or a dose-matched attention control (N = 4). Providers will deliver the intervention to which they were randomized to 10 Black adult patients with uncontrolled asthma (N = 80). Patients will be followed three months postintervention to test the preliminary intervention effects on asthma control (primary outcome) and on medication adherence, lung function, and asthma-related quality of life (secondary outcomes). DISCUSSION This study will evaluate the preliminary impact of a novel shared decision-making intervention delivered in a real world setting to address erroneous disease and medication beliefs as a means of improving asthma control in Black adults. Results will inform a future, large-scale randomized trial with sufficient power to test the intervention's effectiveness. IMPACT Shared decision-making is an evidence-based intervention with proven effectiveness when implemented in the context of labour- and time-intensive research protocols. Medication adherence is linked with the marked disparities evident in poor and minority adults with asthma. Addressing this requires a novel multifactorial approach as we have proposed. To ensure sustainability, shared decision-making interventions must be adapted to and integrated into real-world settings. Abstract
Undiagnosed asthma adds to the burden of asthma and is an especially significant public health concern among urban adolescents. While much is known about individual-level demographic and neighborhood-level factors that characterize those with diagnosed asthma, limited data exist regarding these factors and undiagnosed asthma. This observational study evaluated associations between undiagnosed asthma and individual and neighborhood factors among a large cohort of urban adolescents. We analyzed data from 10,295 New York City adolescents who reported on asthma symptoms and diagnosis; a subset (n = 6220) provided addresses that we were able to geocode into US Census tracts. Multivariable regression models estimated associations between undiagnosed asthma status and individual-level variables. Hierarchical linear modeling estimated associations between undiagnosed asthma status and neighborhood-level variables. Undiagnosed asthma prevalence was 20.2%. Females had higher odds of being undiagnosed (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.25; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.13-1.37). Compared to White, non-Hispanic adolescents, Asian-Americans had higher risk of being undiagnosed (AOR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.01-1.95); Latinos (AOR = 0.67; 95% CI = 0.45-0.83); and African-Americans/Blacks (AOR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.52-0.87) had lower risk; Latinos and African-Americans/Blacks did not differ significantly. Living in a neighborhood with a lower concentration of Latinos relative to White non-Latinos was associated with lower risk of being undiagnosed (AOR = 0.66; CI = 0.43-0.95). Living in a neighborhood with health care provider shortages was associated with lower risk of being undiagnosed (AOR = 0.80; 95% CI =0.69-0.93). Public health campaigns to educate adolescents and their caregivers about undiagnosed asthma, as well as education for health care providers to screen adolescent patients for asthma, are warranted.

UNLABELLED : media-1vid110.1542/5804911922001PEDS-VA_2017-3737Video Abstract BACKGROUND: African American adolescents appear to be the most at risk for asthma morbidity and mortality even compared with other minority groups, yet there are few successful interventions for this population that are used to target poorly controlled asthma. METHODS African American adolescents (age 12-16 years) with moderate-to-severe persistent asthma and ≥1 inpatient hospitalization or ≥2 emergency department visits in 12 months were randomly assigned to Multisystemic Therapy-Health Care or an attention control group (N = 167). Multisystemic Therapy-Health Care is a 6-month home- and community-based treatment that has been shown to improve illness management and health outcomes in high-risk adolescents by addressing the unique barriers for each individual family with cognitive behavioral interventions. The attention control condition was weekly family supportive counseling, which was also provided for 6 months in the home. The primary outcome was lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]) measured over 12 months of follow-up. RESULTS Linear mixed-effects models revealed that compared with adolescents in the comparison group, adolescents in the treatment group had significantly greater improvements in FEV1 secondary outcomes of adherence to controller medication, and the frequency of asthma symptoms. Adolescents in the treatment group had greater reductions in hospitalizations, but there were no differences in reductions in emergency department visits. CONCLUSIONS A comprehensive family- and community-based treatment significantly improved FEV1, medication adherence, asthma symptom frequency, and inpatient hospitalizations in African American adolescents with poorly controlled asthma. Further evaluation in effectiveness and implementation trials is warranted.

Abstract
Background Racial and ethnic minority youth have poorer asthma status than white youth, even after controlling for socioeconomic variables. Proper use of asthma controller medications is critical in reducing asthma mortality and morbidity. The clinical consequences of poor asthma management include increased illness complications, excessive functional morbidity, and fatal asthma attacks. There are significant limitations in research on interventions to improve asthma management in racial minority populations, particularly minority adolescents and young adults, although illness management tends to deteriorate after adolescence during emerging adulthood, the unique developmental period beyond adolescence but before adulthood. Objective The objective of the pilot study was to test the feasibility, acceptability, and signals of efficacy of an intervention targeting adherence to controller medication in African American youth (ages 18-29) with asthma. All elements of the protocol were piloted in a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)–funded pilot study (1R34HL107664 MacDonell). Results suggested feasibility and acceptability of the protocol as well as proof of concept. We are now ready to test the intervention in a larger randomized clinical trial. Methods The proposed study will include 192 African American emerging adults with moderate to severe persistent asthma and low controller medication adherence recruited from clinic, emergency department, and community settings. Half of the sample will be randomized to receive a multicomponent technology-based intervention targeting adherence to daily controller medication. The multicomponent technology-based intervention consists of 2 components: (1) 2 sessions of computer-delivered motivational interviewing targeting medication adherence and (2) individualized text messaging focused on medication adherence between the sessions. Text messages will be individualized based on ecological momentary assessment. The remaining participants will complete a series of computer-delivered asthma education modules matched for length, location, and method of delivery of the intervention session. Control participants will also receive text messages between intervention sessions. Message content will be the same for all control participants and contain general facts about asthma (not tailored). Results It is hypothesized that youth randomized to multicomponent technology-based intervention will show improvements in medication adherence (primary outcome) and asthma control (secondary outcome) compared with comparison condition at all postintervention follow-ups (3, 6, 9, and 12 months). The proposed study was funded by NHLBI from September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2021. Conclusions This project will test a brief, technology-based intervention specifically targeting adherence to asthma controller medications in an under-researched population, African American emerging adults. If successful, our multicomponent technology-based intervention aimed at improving adherence to asthma medications has the potential to improve quality of life of minority emerging adults with asthma at relatively low cost. It could eventually be integrated into clinical settings and practice to reach a large number of emerging adults with asthma. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adverse cross-cultural interactions are a persistent problem within medicine impacting minority patients' use of services and health outcomes. To test whether 1) enhancing the evidence-based Physician Asthma Care Education (PACE), a continuing medical education program, with cross cultural communication training (PACE Plus) would improve the asthma outcomes of African American and Latino/Hispanic children; and 2) whether PACE is effective in diverse groups of children. METHODS A three-arm randomized control trial was used to compare PACE Plus, PACE, and usual care. Participants were primary care physicians (n = 112) and their African American or Latino/Hispanic pediatric patients with persistent asthma (n = 867). The primary outcome of interest included changes in emergency department visits for asthma overtime, measured at baseline, and 9 and 21 months following the intervention. Other outcomes included hospitalizations, asthma symptom experience, caregiver asthma-related quality of life, and patient-provider communication measures. RESULTS Over the long term, PACE Plus physicians reported significant improvements in confidence and use of patient-centered communication and counseling techniques (p < 0.01) compared to PACE physicians. No other significant benefit in primary and secondary outcomes was observed in this trial. CONCLUSION PACE Plus did not show significant benefit in asthma-specific clinical outcomes. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Exercise-induced wheeze (EIW) has been found to be associated with asthma-related urgent care in school-aged children. Despite asthma's high prevalence and morbidity among adolescents, this association has not been examined in adolescents. We tested the association of EIW and other asthma symptoms to asthma-related ED visits and hospitalizations in urban adolescents with probable asthma. We hypothesized that EIW would be associated with urgent care. METHODS In this cross-sectional study 30,467 high school students (mean age = 16.0) from 49 NYC schools completed two brief validated measures, one assessing probable asthma and the other the frequency of six asthma symptoms over the past year. Adolescents also reported if in the past year they had an asthma-related ED visit or hospitalization. Analyses presented here included students with probable asthma (n = 9149). Using logistic regression, we modeled each asthma symptom as a function of ED visits and hospitalizations adjusting for sex, age, race/ethnicity and asthma severity. Multivariable models included all symptoms to account for the potential interaction between symptoms. RESULTS Among adolescents with probable asthma, EIW was associated with ED visits and hospitalizations. In multivariable models wheeze without a cold, chest tightness, night wakening, but not EIW, were significantly associated with both ED visits and hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS Unlike findings with younger children, EIW does not appear to be associated with ED visits and hospitalizations among urban adolescents with probable asthma. Instead, symptoms, such as chest tightness and night wakening, appear to be important at identifying adolescents at risk for asthma-related urgent care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the impact of a sleep course on sleep-related behaviors, mood, and anxiety in college students. PARTICIPANTS Participants were 145 students enrolled in either the sleep course (n = 70) or a psychology course (n = 75); data were collected in September 2014, November 2014, and February 2015. METHODS Sleep characteristics and symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed using validated questionnaires and sleep logs. Linear, logistic and proportional odds regression models were used to test course effects. RESULTS In November, sleep course students reported significant differences in sleep hygiene (SHI; p < .001), perceived sleep latency (PSQI; p < .05), and circadian sleep phase (MEQ; p < .05), compared to controls. In February, the sleep course students maintained most of the aforementioned gains and reported fewer symptoms of depression (CES-D; p = .05) and anxiety (BAI; p < .05). CONCLUSIONS These positive preliminary results indicate that focused education has the potential to improve sleep among college students.

Abstract
PURPOSE Greenhouse gases are driving climate change. This article explores the adverse health effects of climate change on a particularly vulnerable population: children and adults with respiratory conditions. APPROACH This review provides a general overview of the effects of increasing temperatures, extreme weather, desertification, and flooding on asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, and respiratory infections. We offer suggestions for future research to better understand climate change hazards, policies to support prevention and mitigation efforts targeting climate change, and clinical actions to reduce individual risk. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS Climate change produces a number of changes to the natural and built environments that may potentially increase respiratory disease prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. Nurses might consider focusing their research efforts on reducing the effects of greenhouse gases and in directing policy to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change. Nurses can also continue to direct educational and clinical actions to reduce risks for all populations, but most importantly, for our most vulnerable groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE While advancements have been made in understanding the impact of climate change on respiratory health, nurses can play an important role in reducing the deleterious effects of climate change. This will require a multipronged approach of research, policy, and clinical action.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Understanding of parent anxiety and its effect on infant postoperative pain is limited. We sought to identify psychological factors associated with preoperative anxiety for parents of infants and toddlers undergoing elective surgery and to determine whether parent anxiety is associated with child postoperative pain. METHODS This was a prospective cohort study of consecutively eligible patients aged ≤18 months undergoing craniofacial surgery and their parents. Preoperative parent assessment included anxiety, coping, parent health locus of control, and self-efficacy. Postoperative inpatient child pain scores and medication use were collected. Analyses included hierarchical multivariable logistic and linear regression models. RESULTS Parents (n = 71, 90% female) of young children (mean age 6.6 months) undergoing cleft lip or palate (n = 59) or cranial vault repair (n = 13) were enrolled. Maladaptive coping (odds ratio 1.3; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-1.6), low parent self-efficacy (odds ratio 2.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.3-4.5), and external locus of control (odds ratio 1.74; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-2.9) were independently associated with high parental anxiety. The adjusted odds of moderate/severe parent anxiety was 3.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.5-9.1) higher with each SD increase in maladaptive coping. High parental anxiety was correlated with significantly higher hospital mean child pain scores (1.87 points on 0-10 scale; 95% confidence interval, 0.42-3.70; P = .045). CONCLUSIONS Coping and self-efficacy are modifiable factors that contribute to parent anxiety before and during hospitalization and may be targets for intervention. Infants and toddlers undergoing elective craniofacial surgery with highly anxious parents may be at greater risk for higher postoperative pain.

Abstract
PURPOSE Adolescents are low users of medical care. Psychological factors and perceived reasons to not seek routine medical care may increase risk of nonuse by adolescents with undiagnosed asthma. This study tests if psychological factors were associated with seeing a medical provider for asthma-like symptoms; identifies adolescents' perceived reasons for not obtaining care; explores if psychological factors are associated with these perceptions; and explores if asthma severity moderates the relationships with psychological factors. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from a baseline assessment of 349 urban, primarily ethnic minority adolescents with moderate to severe asthma-like symptoms but no asthma diagnosis who were enrolled in a controlled trial. RESULTS The odds of seeing a provider for their asthma-like symptoms were significantly higher for those with asthma-related anxiety (odds ratio [OR]: 1.644; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.242-2.176) and depressive symptoms (OR: 1.031; 95% CI: 1.004-1.059). The most commonly endorsed reason for noncare included a characterization of symptoms as not serious, past medical visits not diagnosed as asthma, fear of diagnosis, busy lifestyles, and not wanting medication. Psychological factors were not related to the number of reasons or to most of the commonly endorsed reasons. Adolescents with more asthma-related anxiety were less likely to characterize their breathing problems as serious (OR = .0583; 95% CI: .424-.802) and were more likely to report busy lifestyles (OR = 1.593; 95% CI: 1.122-2.261). CONCLUSIONS Adolescent-perceived reasons for noncare were not pragmatic, but instead highlighted denial. Asthma-related anxiety was the most robust psychological factor associated with the decision to seek medical care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association of adolescent asthma-related anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, and caregiver asthma-related anxiety with asthma care by urban adolescents. METHODS Participants were 386 ethnic minority adolescents (mean age 12.8 years) with persistent asthma and their caregivers. Adolescents reported what they do to prevent asthma symptoms and to manage acute symptoms, and if they or their caregiver is responsible for their asthma care. Adolescents completed the Youth Asthma-Related Anxiety Scale, and the social and separation anxiety subscales of the Screen for Child Anxiety and Emotional Disorders (SCARED); caregivers completed the Parent Asthma-Related Anxiety Scale. Linearity of the associations was assessed by generalized additive models. When there was no evidence for nonlinearity, linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate the effects of the predictors. RESULTS Adolescent asthma-related anxiety had a strong curvilinear relationship with symptom prevention (P < .001). Adolescents took more prevention steps as their anxiety increased, with a plateau at moderate anxiety. There was a linear relationship of adolescent asthma-related anxiety to symptom management (β = 0.03, P = .021) and to asthma responsibility (β = 0.11, P = .015), and of caregiver asthma-related anxiety to adolescent symptom prevention (β = 0.04, P = .001). Adolescent social and separation anxiety had weak to no relationship with asthma care. Results remained consistent when controlling for each of the other anxieties. CONCLUSIONS Asthma-related anxiety plays an important, independent role in asthma care. When low, adolescents may benefit from increased support from caregivers and awareness of the consequences of uncontrolled asthma. When elevated, health providers should ensure the adolescents are not assuming responsibility for asthma care prematurely.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) has not been well studied in urban adolescents with asthma in community settings. Nor has the association of SDB symptoms and asthma severity been studied. We characterized self-reported symptoms suggesting SDB and investigated the association of SDB symptoms, probable asthma, and asthma severity. METHODS 9,565 adolescents from 21 inner-city high schools were screened for an asthma intervention study. Students reported on symptoms suggesting SDB using questions from the 2007 NHANES, if they were ever diagnosed with asthma, and on asthma symptoms. Using generalized linear mixed models with logit link with school as a random intercept and adjusting for age, gender, and race/ethnicity, we examined associations of SDB symptoms, and demographic characteristics, probable asthma, and asthma severity. RESULTS 12% reported SDB symptoms. Older and bi-racial participants (compared to Caucasian) had higher odds of symptoms suggesting SDB (p <.001). Compared to those without probable asthma, adolescents with probable asthma had 2.63 greater odds of reporting SDB symptoms (p <.001). Among those with probable asthma, the odds of reporting SDB symptoms increased with asthma severity. When exploring daytime severity and severity due to night wakening separately, results were similar. All results remained significant when controlling for age, gender, and ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS In a large urban community cohort of predominately ethnic minority adolescents, self-reported SDB symptoms were associated with probable asthma and increased asthma severity. This study highlights the importance of SDB as a modifiable co-morbidity of asthma.

Abstract
Adolescent obesity continues to be a major public health issue with a third of American adolescents being overweight or obese. Excess weight is associated with cardiovascular risk factors and pre-diabetes. High school students identified as carrying excess weight [body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m(2), or BMI percentile ≥85 %] were invited to participate in The BODY Project, an intervention that included a medical evaluation and a personalized medical report of the results of that evaluation sent to the parent/guardian at home. The medical evaluation and report was repeated 12 months later. The reports also contained advice on how the individual student could modify their lifestyle to improve the specific medical parameters showing abnormalities. Outcomes were change in BMI, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), fasting glucose, and fasting insulin. Students participating in The BODY Project intervention demonstrated modest, yet significant, reductions in BMI (p < 0.001) 1 year later, and also had significant improvements in systolic blood pressure (p < 0.001) and cholesterol profile (HDL p = 0.002; LDL p < 0.001) at follow-up. The BODY Project, by means of a minimal educational program anchored on the principle of teachable moments around the students' increased perception of their own risk for disease from the medical abnormalities uncovered, demonstrates evidence of potential effectiveness in addressing adolescent obesity.

METHODS A total of 349 adolescents (83% girls), with a mean age of 15.8 years, and their primary caregivers participated. Large segments of the sample were Latinos (46%) or African Americans (37%). Adolescents reported on asthma-namely, rate of waking up at night due to asthma-like symptoms and perceived severity of breathing problems-and sleep, specifically sleep-wake behavior problems and daytime sleepiness during activities. Caregivers provided demographic information by telephone. RESULTS Night awakenings and perceived severity of breathing problems were each independently associated with sleep-wake behavior problems and daytime sleepiness during activities. Youth report of perceived stress moderated the association between perceived severity of breathing problems and sleep-wake behavior problems, and perceived severity of breathing problems and daytime sleepiness during activities. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest the importance of interventions that consider undiagnosed asthma and its effects on sleep indicators related to daytime functioning in this high risk group of youth. This study highlights the need for interventions that consider asthma severity, nocturnal asthma, and sleep problems among urban adolescents with no asthma diagnosis.
