Abstract
A series of {V12}-nuclearity polyoxovanadate cages covalently functionalized with one or sandwiched by two phthalocyaninato (Pc) lanthanide (Ln) moieties via V-O-Ln bonds were prepared and fully characterized for paramagnetic Ln = SmIII-ErIII and diamagnetic Ln = LuIII, including YIII. The LnPc-functionalized {V12O32} cages with fully oxidized vanadium centers in the ground state were isolated as (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)] and (nBu4N)2[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)2] compounds. As corroborated by a combined experimental (EPR, DC and AC SQUID, laser photolysis transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry) and computational (DFT, MD, and model Hamiltonian approach) methods, the compounds feature intra- and intermolecular electron transfer that is responsible for a partial reduction at V(3d) centers from VV to VIV in the solid state and at high sample concentrations. The effects are generally Ln dependent and are clearly demonstrated for the (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)] representative with Ln = LuIII or DyIII. Intramolecular charge transfer takes place for Ln = LuIII and occurs from a Pc ligand via the Ln center to the {V12O32} core of the same molecule, whereas for Ln = DyIII, only intermolecular charge transfer is allowed, which is realized from Pc in one molecule to the {V12O32} core of another molecule usually via the nBu4N+ countercation. For all Ln but DyIII, two of these phenomena may be present in different proportions. Besides, it is demonstrated that (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(DyPc)] is a field-induced single molecule magnet with a maximal relaxation time of the order 10-3 s. The obtained results open up the way to further exploration and fine-tuning of these three modular molecular nanocomposites regarding tailoring and control of their Ln-dependent charge-separated states (induced by intramolecular transfer) and relaxation dynamics as well as of electron hopping between molecules. This should enable us to realize ultra-sensitive polyoxometalate powered quasi-superconductors, sensors, and data storage/processing materials for quantum technologies and neuromorphic computing.

Abstract
In this paper, a method to discriminate between two target RNA sequences that differ by one nucleotide only is presented. The method relies on the formation of alternative structures, i.e., quadruplex–duplex hybrid (QDH) and duplex with dangling ends (Dss), after hybridization of DNA or RNA G-rich oligonucleotides with target sequences containing 5′–GGGCUGG–3′ or 5′–GGGCGGG–3′ fragments. Using biophysical methods, we studied the effect of oligonucleotide types (DNA, RNA), non-nucleotide modifications (aliphatic linkers or abasic), and covalently attached G4 ligand on the ability of G-rich oligonucleotides to assemble a G-quadruplex motif. We demonstrated that all examined non-nucleotide modifications could mimic the external loops in the G-quadruplex domain of QDH structures without affecting their stability. Additionally, some modifications, in particular the presence of two abasic residues in the G-rich oligonucleotide, can induce the formation of non-canonical QDH instead of the Dss structure upon hybridization to a target sequence containing the GGGCUGG motif. Our results offer new insight into the sequential requirements for the formation of G-quadruplexes and provide important data on the effects of non-nucleotide modifications on G-quadruplex formation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rehabilitation following major joint replacement surgery is an extremely important part of complementary treatment after the surgical procedure. To obtain the best final treatment outcome possible, apart from improvements in surgical technique, new methods of rehabilitation are still being sought and implemented to increase its effectiveness, safety and patient comfort. One such technique is vibroacoustic therapy, a method of treatment based on the direct transmission of audible sound vibrations through a sound transmitter to the patient's body. The present study assessed the effectiveness of vibroacoustic therapy in early postoperative rehabilitation of post-TKR and post-THR patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 60 post-TKR and post-THR patients divided into two groups depending on the type of surgery. Each group was further divided into an experimental group treated with the VITAFON-2 apparatus and a control group treated with a placebo apparatus; all patients also underwent routine kinesiotherapy that is offered at the hospital. Vibroa-coustic treatment was carried out and evaluated during the first 4 days following surgery. Symptom intensity, range of motion of the operated joints, oedema in the operated limb and haematoma absorption were assessed. RESULTS Postoperative vibroacoustic therapy performed during the first 4 post-operative days reduced pain more significantly than kinesiotherapy alone. It also clinically improved the absorption of post-traumatic haematomas in post-TKR patients insignificantly better than kinesiotherapy. In post-THR patients who had undergone an anterolateral approach procedure, phoning (vibroacoustic stimulation) significantly sped up the rate of recovery of normal internal rotation angles in the operated joints. CONCLUSIONS 1. Vibroacoustic therapy applied topically in post-TKR patients exerts a significant positive effect on reducing pain intensity. 2. Topical vibroacoustic therapy does not significantly reduce the oedema around the operated hip and knee joints or increase their range of motion. 3. Vibroacoustic therapy accelerates the absorption of postoperative subcutaneous haematomas in a clinically visible manner.

Abstract
A tris(alkoxo)pyridine-augmented Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (nBu4N)6[WD-Py] (WD = P2V3W15O59(OCH2)3C, Py = C5H4N) was functionalized with phthalocyaninato metal moieties (MPc where M = Y or Yb and Pc = C32H16N8) to afford (nBu4N)4[HWD-Py(MPc)] compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect and identify the hybrid assembly. The magnetism studies reveal substantial differences between M = Yb (monomeric, single-ion paramagnetism) and M = Y (containing dimers, radical character). The results of electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetochemical calculations indicate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety to the polyoxometalate and of intermolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety of one molecule to the polyoxometalate unit of another molecule. These compounds with identified VIV ions represent unique examples of transition-metal/lanthanide complex-POM hybrid compounds with nonphotoinduced charge transfer between electron donor and acceptor centers.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Family history of breast cancer, age at menarche, number of pregnancies and births, history of breast biopsies, use of hormone replacement therapy and time from the last menstrual period are the key events to note. In addition, a high percentage of cases has been demonstrated in women with a genetically conditioned cancer, i.e. mutations in genes BRCA1, BRCA2, syndromes of Li-Fraumeni, Cowden and Peutz-Jeghers. Over 90% of cases are local or regional when detected. The diagnostics approach consists of self-control, breast palpation by the doctor, breast imaging usually with ultrasound, mammography and magnetic resonance. To confirm the diagnosis, a fine-, core-needle or mammotome biopsy is performed. The final diagnosis is based on a wide panel of immunohistochemical and cytogenetic tests. Histological examination provides accurate assessment of the tumor type, grade, estrogen and progesterone hormone receptor status, HER2 overexpression and Ki67 proliferation index. The data makes possible to qualify to one of four groups of breast cancer biological subtypes, which allows individualized treatment of the patient.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The overweight and obesity epidemic represents a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Nearly one-third of the world's population has excess adipose tissue. Nowadays, obesity occurrence is so common that it is replacing more traditional problems, such as an undernutrition and infectious diseases, as the most significant causes of ill health. If the current trend continues, almost half of the world's adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to show the connection between recent trends in body mass index, and the globally changing cancer profile. STATE OF KNOWLEDGE A range of clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between excess body fat and the most frequently occurring malignancies. Obesity is associated with many cancers, such as: breast, colorectal, liver, lung, kidney, oesophageal, pancreatic, endometrium, ovarian, prostate, thyroid, and gallbladder cancer. CONCLUSIONS In the light of this information, the study supports the claimed statement that obesity is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. Considering the increase in the number of obese people worldwide, it is necessary to develop a strategy allowing to prevent it. Fighting against unhealthy lifestyle in order to reduce overweight and obesity in society may have an essential impact on decreasing the number of incidences of cancer.

Abstract
Perineural cyst (Tarlov cyst) is a lesion in a form of fluid-filled sacks, usually located within the nerve root sheath at the posterior root of a spinal nerve, whose wall is formed by: endoneurium, peripheral nerve fibers and ganglion cells and areolar tissue. Depending on the studied population, the frequency of lesion occurence was estimated at 1.5- 13.2%, with its significant majority occuring in women. Cyst development may be the result of ischemia, hemorrhage, inflammation or trauma. Cysts are usually asymptomatic theefore they are likely to bo detected accidentally. However, in approximately 1/4 of the cases, the cyst puts so much pressure on the nerve and the neighbouring nerve roots that it becomes symptomatic (causes pain). The presence of clinical symptoms may be an indication for conservative treatment (i.e. analgesics, rehablitation, cyst puncture) or surgery (usually laminectomy).

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to elucidate the frequency of the SNPs in the ADIPOQ, RBP4 and BCMO1genes in a population of Caucasian Polish women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and to evaluate the possible associations between these variants and the susceptibility to PCOS. Additionally, the relationship of these polymorphisms to a clinical phenotype of this syndrome, and the concentrations of adipokines, were determined. MATERIALS/METHODS Clinical and biochemical profiles, DNA isolation and genotyping, and adipokine assays were performed in 294 PCOS women and 78 controls. RESULTS In a cohort of Polish women, for the genotype distribution and allele frequencies (minor allele frequency - MAF) proved that only the SNP rs1501299 in the gene ADIPOQ (P = 0.0010, OR = 0.41, 95% C.I.:0.24-0.70) and rs7501331 in the gene BCMO1 (P = 0.0106, OR = 0.24, 95% C.I.:0.21-0.71), are significantly associated (the latter marginally significant) with the decrease of the risk of the disease. Also for this SNPs there were significant differences in the genotypic frequencies in the study population. There was a link between rs12934922 of BCMO1 gen and serum concentration of RBP4 (P = 0.034) and adiponectin (P = 0.038) in the study group but not in the control group. The elevated mean serum concentration of cholesterol (P = 0.020) and LDL cholesterol (P = 0.005) was observed for GG rs1501299 genotype and triglycerides (P = 0.028) for TT rs2241766 genotype. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study revealed that the genes variants RBP4 is not associated with PCO. It seems that rs1501299 of ADIPOQ gene influences the occurrence of PCO and lipids profile in those patients.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the femoral stem fracture as a rare complication of total hip arthroplasty and describe further management in such cases. We present 5 cases of stem fracture in the Mittelmeier prosthe-sis which occurred from 8 to 29 years after the primary procedure. In three cases, the primary hip arthroplasty was performed due to dysplastic coxarthrosis. The remaining two patients had idiopathic and post-traumatic coxarthrosis. The four female patients underwent revision hip arthroplasty with stem replacement. One patient refused surgical treatment and has been followed up at the outpatient clinic. Annual clinical and radiological examination is an approved method for detecting late complications Hip arthroplasty should be performed at specialised centres where relevant prostheses and instruments are used. A transfemoral approach and the use of revision stems anchored in the femoral shaft is a method of choice for revision procedures performed due to stem fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both ultrasound and radial shockwave therapies are used to treat tennis elbow syndrome. The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of both therapies by assessing the reduction in pain intensity and frequency, restoration of mobility, and reduction in the need for pain medication. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study enrolled 60 people, who were randomly divided into two groups of 30 patients: those treated by radial shockwave therapy and those treated by ultrasound therapy. Radial shockwave therapy consisted of 3 sessions at weekly intervals. Ultrasound therapy consisted of 10 treatments performed daily. The clinical status of the patients before treatment, just after treatment, and after 8 weeks was assessed with the Leitinen questionnaire and a visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS Pain reduction, as assessed by VAS scores, was observed in both groups, who were not different at baseline (p=0.807). While both therapies were effective (p<0.005), mean pain intensity assessed by VAS scores in patients treated by radial shockwave therapy was significantly lower compared to those treated by ultrasound therapy; this relationship was present just after treatment completion (p=0.001) and at 8 weeks after treatment completion (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS 1. Both radial shockwave and ultrasound therapies cause a reduction in the intensity and frequency of pain that persists for at least 8 weeks, reducing the need for pain medication and improving the function of the treated upper limb. 2. Ultrasound therapy is less effective than radial shockwave therapy.

Abstract
The electronic structure and magnetism of mixed-valence, host-guest polyoxovanadates {X@VO54} with diamagnetic (X =) ClO4- (Td, 1) and SCN- (C∞v, 2) template anions are assessed by means of two theoretical methods: density functional theory and effective Hamiltonian calculations. The results are compared to those obtained for another member of this family with X = VO2F2- (C2v, 3) (see P. Kozłowski et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2017, 19, 29767-29771), for which complementary data are also acquired. It is demonstrated that the X guest anions strongly influence the electronic and magnetic properties of the system, leading to various valence states of vanadium and modifying V-O-V exchange interactions. Our findings are concordant with and elucidate the available experimental data (see K. Y. Monakhov et al., Chem. - Eur. J., 2015, 21, 2387-2397).

Abstract
The electronic structure and magnetism of the recently synthesised mixed-valent {VVO2F2@VO54} (1) host-guest polyoxovanadate envisaged as a potential building block of a molecule-based quantum computer are analysed using density functional theory (DFT) and effective Hamiltonian calculations. The form of the t-J like effective Hamiltonian has been inspired by the acquired DFT data, and the valence state used in DFT calculations has been suggested by the fits to the experimental magnetic data with the effective Hamiltonian. This self-consistent approach breaks through the magnetochemical limitations of vanadium-oxo cluster 1, giving results fully concordant with the experiment and allowing us to determine the valence state of 1, which contrary to other members of this host-guest family appears to feature 9 valence electrons.

Abstract
Primary liver neoplasms occurs relatively rarely in Poland. The most frequently occurring type of cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which globally constitutes 7% of all the occurrences of cancer. The incidence increases with age and is the highest in patients around the age of 70. It also varies significantly depending on the geographic location. The main factors that cause HCC are infection of HBV and HCV, whose genome integrates into the DNA of the host, causing mutations. The other factors include excessive alcohol consumption, contact or consumption of Aspergillus toxins as well as various metabolic disorders, such as α1-antitrypsin deficiency, hemochromatosis, tyrosinemia, porphyria, von Gierke disease and in person with gene mutation p.I148M of adiponutrin. HCC is usually detected incidentally, during ultrasound examination or during clinical diagnosis of liver failure. HCC can be diagnosed using computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is considered the most accurate diagnostic method. A core needle biopsy or the examination of the level of markers such as: alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), D-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (DCP), tumourassociated glycoprotein 72 (CA 72-4, TAG-72), are advised for a complete diagnostics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A femoral neck fracture leads to serious health-related, social and economic consequences and, according to the con-temporary doctrine of medical management, should be treated surgically. Data provided by the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System indicate that there were 1534 patients with femoral neck fractures treated by arthroplasty with a Moore's endoprosthesis and 4744 with a bipolar endoprosthesis in Poland in 2014. Since the risk of femoral neck fracture increases exponentially with the patient's age, and population aging is undoubtedly a real demographic trend, we believe that there is a need to develop criteria for taking treatment decisions to ensure the best possible outcomes. The aim of this paper is to identify factors influencing the functional outcomes of hemiarthroplasty measured with the Harris Hip Score (HHS) in patients with femoral neck fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS The first part of study data consisted of clinical data derived from the medical treatment records of 161 patients with femoral neck fractures who were treated by hemiarthroplasty in the Orthopaedic Department of the Regional Hospital in Sieradz in 2009-2011. The age, sex, overall health status of the patients qualified for surgical treatment, time between injury and surgery, type of endoprosthesis, and length of stay at the department were determined. The second part was data from an outcome assessment using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) at two-year follow-up visits of 90 patients of the original group. RESULTS The mean outcome of all the patients was defined as satisfactory (HHS score of 73.37 points). Examination of one-factor correlations between the outcome and the patient's sex and the type of endoprosthesis revealed significantly superior outcomes in men and patients who received the bipolar endoprosthesis. A multiple factor statistical analysis, which additionally included the variables of patient age and baseline overall health status, demonstrated that only overall health status (ASA score) had a statistically significant effect on the functional outcome of arthroplasty among all factors examined. CONCLUSIONS 1. Evaluation of the quality of life of patients who underwent surgery after femoral neck fractures utilising the Harris Hip Score (HHS) in one-fac-tor correlations (age, sex, type of endoprosthesis, general condition) revealed significantly superior results for men who received the bipolar endo-prosthesis. There was also a moderately strong and negative correlation with the patients' age. 2. The functional outcomes in patients with low energy femoral neck fractures treated with two types of partial hip endoprosthesis at the Ortho-paedic Department of the Regional Hospital in Sieradz, assessed by multiple factor analysis, showed a significant correlation only with the patient's baseline overall health status.

Abstract
Testicular tumours are rare neoplasms, which most commonly affects men aged 25 to 35 years. Among young adult males it is the most common cause of testicular swelling. In recent decades, the number of cases of testicular tumours has greatly increased. The most significant predisposing factors are cryptorchidism and some endocrine disorders, especially increased levels of gonadotropins and female sex hormones. Testicular trauma, inguinal hernia, extreme values of body mass index (BMI), high-calorie diet rich in dairy products as well as high social status are also regarded as risk factors. Furthermore, some chromosomal abnormalities like increased number of chromosomes 7, 8. 12, 21 and X, loss of chromosomes 4, 5, 11, 13, 18, or Y, mutation in the gene Xq27; as well as multiplied copy of the gene i(12p) are associated with tumor development. It has been proven that high testosterone levels and regular physical activity may prevent testicular tumours. Since one of the first sign the lesion is often a lump or swelling of the testis and the appearance of abnormal structure in the scrotum routine testicular self-examination seems to be important in early detection. In all suspected cases an immediate ultrasound examination of both testicles is highly recommended. It is also advised to conduct a computerized tomography (CT) and a positron emission tomography (PET) scan for staging of the tumor to select the best mode of treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal, non-neoplastic presence of lamellar bone in soft tissue. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) are among factors that may lead to HO. The purpose of the study was to evaluate correlations between BMP-4 gene expression and HO and the influence of those factors on outcomes of cementless total hip replacement (THR). PATIENTS AND METHODS A series of sixty-four (64) patients were enrolled. The patients were at a mean age of 52.3 years and all of them had undergone unilateral THR. Mean duration of follow-up was 56.74 months. At the last follow-up visit, 1 ml blood samples were collected and BMP-4 gene expression was measured by the RT-PCR technique. Hip radiographs were also obtained and a clinical examination was performed during that visit. RESULTS A strong statistical correlation was observed between HO grades according to Brooker's scale and BMP-4 expression levels (rho=0.946, p<0.0001), while there was no correlation between clinical outcomes according to the Harris Hip Score (HHS) and Brooker's grades (rho= -0.188, p=0.3) as well as between Harris hip scores and BMP-4 expression levels (rho=0.1, p=0.6). CONCLUSIONS BMP-4 expression strongly correlates with HO as measured by Brooker's scale and may play a role in the aetiology of this condition. The over-expression of BMP-4 may exert a certain influence on ectopic bone formation after total hip arthroplasty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hip arthroplasty is one of the most frequently performed orthopedic procedures with high scores of success while its most common complication is aseptic loosening of the acetabular component, which may result from host bone loss or even from pelvis discontinuity. The purpose of the study was to evaluate results in patients after revision acetabular arthroplasty with reconstruction rings and allografts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective data was collected from 69 revisions of acetabular components, performed in a group of 69 treated patients (the mean age 65.1 years). Before surgery, the patients had bone defects of type IIb (n = 5), IIc (n = 20), IIIa (n = 27) or IIIb (n = 17), according to Paprosky et al. RESULTS The mean followup period of the patients was 7.2 years (range 3-19 years). A Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that a 3- and 10 year survival rate was 92.8% and 84.8% respectively, using further revision for any reason of the acetabular device as an end point. Eight patients revealed implant related complications. Four patients presented with ring loosening, one with a loose acetabular polyethylene cup, two hips demonstrated recurrent dislocations and one patient was with deep infection. Regarding the remaining 61 patients without re-revision surgery, the mean Harris hip score improved from 30.5 to 73.8 points. CONCLUSION A modified, antiprotrusion cage provides an acceptable survival rate and radiological results, but complications could still be expected. It seems that the observed massive bone loss with pelvic discontinuity and an insufficient fixation of the cage to the ischium may result in implant loosening. Stable fixation of the ischial ring flange with screws is an essential condition to expect a good outcome.

Abstract
Mixed-valence polyoxovanadates(IV/V) have emerged as one of the most intricate class of supramolecular all-inorganic host species, able to encapsulate a wide variety of smaller guest templates during their self-assembly formation process. As showcased herein, the incorporation of guests, though governed solely by ultra-weak electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, can cause drastic effects on the electronic and magnetic characteristics of the shell complex of the polyoxovanadate. We address the question of methodology for the magnetochemical analysis of virtually isostructural {V(IV/V) 22 O54 }-type polyoxoanions of D2d symmetry enclosing diamagnetic VO2 F2 (-) (C2v ), SCN(-) (C∞v ), or ClO4 (-) (Td ) template anions. These induce different polarization effects related to differences in their geometric structures, symmetry, ion radii, and valence shells, eventually resulting in a supramolecular modulation of magnetic exchange between the V(3d) electrons that are partly delocalized over the {V22 O54 } shells. We also include the synthesis and characterization of the novel [V(V) O2 F2 @HV(IV) 8 V(V) 14 O54 ](6-) system that comprises the rarely encountered discrete difluorovanadate anion as a quasi-isolated guest species.

Abstract
Copy number variants (CNVs) are genomic rearrangements resulting from gains or losses of DNA segments. Typically, the term refers to rearrangements of sequences larger than 1 kb. This type of polymorphism has recently been shown to be a key contributor to intra-species genetic variation, along with single-nucleotide polymorphisms and short insertion-deletion polymorphisms. Over the last decade, a growing number of studies have highlighted the importance of copy number variation (CNV) as a factor affecting human phenotype and individual CNVs have been linked to risks for severe diseases. In plants, the exploration of the extent and role of CNV is still just beginning. Initial genomic analyses indicate that CNVs are prevalent in plants and have greatly affected plant genome evolution. Many CNV events have been observed in outcrossing and autogamous species. CNVs are usually found on all chromosomes, with CNV hotspots interspersed with regions of very low genetic variation. Although CNV is mainly associated with intergenic regions, many CNVs encompass protein-coding genes. The collected data suggest that CNV mainly affects the members of large families of functionally redundant genes. Thus, the effects of individual CNV events on phenotype are usually modest. Nevertheless, there are many cases in which CNVs for specific genes have been linked to important traits such as flowering time, plant height and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. Recent reports suggest that CNVs may form rapidly in response to stress.

Abstract
DNA microarrays, which are among the most popular genomic tools, are widely applied in biology and medicine. Boutique arrays, which are small, spotted, dedicated microarrays, constitute an inexpensive alternative to whole-genome screening methods. The data extracted from each microarray-based experiment must be transformed and processed prior to further analysis to eliminate any technical bias. The normalization of the data is the most crucial step of microarray data pre-processing and this process must be carefully considered as it has a profound effect on the results of the analysis. Several normalization algorithms have been developed and implemented in data analysis software packages. However, most of these methods were designed for whole-genome analysis. In this study, we tested 13 normalization strategies (ten for double-channel data and three for single-channel data) available on R Bioconductor and compared their effectiveness in the normalization of four boutique array datasets. The results revealed that boutique arrays can be successfully normalized using standard methods, but not every method is suitable for each dataset. We also suggest a universal seven-step workflow that can be applied for the selection of the optimal normalization procedure for any boutique array dataset. The described workflow enables the evaluation of the investigated normalization methods based on the bias and variance values for the control probes, a differential expression analysis and a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The analysis of each component results in a separate ranking of the normalization methods. A combination of the ranks obtained from all the normalization procedures facilitates the selection of the most appropriate normalization method for the studied dataset and determines which methods can be used interchangeably.

Abstract
In order to verify two microscopic models of the molecular nanomagnet Cr7Cd we analyze a number of thermodynamic quantities calculated for two sets of parameters. The first model, with only single ion anisotropy, was established on the basis of the thermodynamic properties (by fitting susceptibility and magnetization) whereas the second, with single ion and bond-dependent exchange anisotropies, was based on the inelastic neutron scattering and EPR spectra. The calculations are performed by means of non-perturbative, numerically exact quantum transfer matrix technique on large scale parallel computers. We demonstrate that the predictions of the models are consistent in the region of small magnetic fields which do not exceed 10 T and differ significantly in higher fields. Comparison with the experiment leads to a conclusion that better modeling of magnetic torque requires more complex microscopic model with single ion and bond-dependent exchange anisotropies.

Abstract
Aim of this study is to assess the causes of mechanical loosening of revision Recon Ring baskets (Aesculap / BBrown, Germany). This analysis was done by assessing the circumstances of baskets loosening of revision in 3 patients. Intraoperative images and radiographs of patients with these clinical complications were analyzed, and removed damaged bins and bolts of revision metallographic expertise. It was found that the most likely cause mechanical damage to the implant was originally unstable or re-fixing their ischial part, causing movable canopy closer to the basket is balanced by the screws and in turn causing fracture or bending arms, and follow-up baskets of hip bone loss. Our observations suggest that the most important is proper attachment of acetabular basket, especially his arm sciatic.

Abstract
The variability of human populations in a large part is determined by two complementary factors: environment and genetic information. Genetic variation is caused by different genetic variants (polymorphisms and mutations) present in the human genome. Until recently it was thought that most of these variants are small changes of one or several nucleotides (SNPs) which in their millions are present in the human genome. However, it was recently shown that there are also polymorphisms that extend over hundreds of thousands of DNA base pairs in the human genome. Such alternations called copy number variation (CNV) often include genes and other functional genetic elements. In this article we present the general characteristics of copy number polymorphism and we discuss some examples of CNVs that influence human phenotypes.

Abstract
The aim of the study was the assessment of results after acetabular revision arthtoplasty with the use of reinforcement ring ReconShell (BBrown - Aesculap) and homogenous bone grafts. There were 49 patients in the study (42 women and 7 men) in the age from 30 to 88 years. The follow-up period ranged from 4 to 48 months. Before operation the mean Harris hip score was 31.14 and at last follow-up 71.64 points. Aseptic loosening of reconstruction ring was found in 3 patients. During next revision good integration of bone grafts, that were implanted into acetabulum at previous operation was found. In one hip revision of loose polietylen cup was performed. Three patient had early dislocation of hip endoprothesis, that were treated successfully in abduction casts. Next 2 patients had re-revision performed for recurrent dislocations. One patient had implants removal for septic loosening. Prolonged wound healing was noticed in 5 patients. Two patients had temporary and one permanent common peroneal nerve palsy. Two patients had temporary femoral nerve palsy. The use of reconstruction rings in massive bone loss of the acetabulum after cup loosening gives satisfactory clinical results. After the procedure patients have stabile joint that allows for weight bearing. Despite relatively high number of complications (most of which are temporary) this procedure is worth recommending.

Abstract
Adult rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common of rheumatoid diseases, that may cause hand dysfunction in some patients. Its equivalent in children is juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA). The aim of our study was to evaluate differences in hand deformity between children with JCA and adults with RA. The prospective study was performed on two groups of patients: 15 with JCA (average age 13.1 years, range from 9 to 18 years) and 15 with RA (average age 53.6 years, range from 42 to 60 years). Both groups were similar in terms of Seyfried classification system and duration of the disease--7.9 years for children and 8.6 for adults. Clinical assessment was performed according to Swanson and Seyfrieda classification system. Patients with RA had only radial wrist "deviation" and those with JCA had both radial and ulnar wrist deviation. In MCP joints in adult's group fingers were always in ulnar position and in children's group finder position was opposite to wrist position. "Swan neck" deformity of fingers from II to V was found in both groups. "Buttonhole deformity" was more often seen in older group. Pain of wrist and in IP joints was more often found and was more severe in RA group. Hypertrophy of synovium and subluxation of IP and wrist joust were found with similar frequency in both groups. In other joints subluxation was rare. Concluding, radial wrist deviation is typical for RA patients. Children with JCA had both radial and ulnar wrist deviation. In MCP joints deformity is always opposite to wrist deviation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changes in the shape of acetabulum from the onset of the disease to the skeletal maturity in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. The study population consisted of 243 patients with unilateral involvement who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow-up. All hips were treated by containment methods (which included bed rest and traction in abduction, Petri cast, brace, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy, and shelf acetabuloplasty). Necrosis of the femoral head was estimated according to the lateral pillar classification and late results according to the Stulberg classification. Changes in the shape of the acetabulum were divided into 3 groups: type I-normal, concave lateral acetabulum margin; type II-flat, horizontal lateral acetabulum margin; and type III-convex, sloping acetabular margin. Roentgenograms performed during the fragmentation stage revealed type I changes in 78 (32.1%) hips, type II in 136 (55.7%), and type III in 29 (12.2%). At the last follow-up, there were type I changes in 124 (51.2%) hips, type II in 81 (33.5%), and type III in 38 (15.3%). The statistical analysis revealed no significant statistical difference between the age at the onset and gender with regard to acetabular changes. There was significant statistical correlation between the lateral pillar classification, subluxation of the femoral head, the range of hip abduction, and the Stulberg classification with regard to acetabular changes. A type III was statistically associated with lateral pillar classification group C, major subluxation of the femoral head, limited hip abduction, and in Stulberg group 3, 4, or 5. Only surgical methods of treatment improved the acetabular shape at the last follow-up (P<0.05). In our opinion, the lateral acetabulum shape plays a very important role during the remodeling of the deformed proximal femoral epiphysis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and whether there is any correlation between LLD and age at onset, gender, type of treatment, and severity of disease. The study population consisted of 261 patients with unilateral involvement who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow-up. All hips were treated by containment methods (bed rest and traction in abduction, Petri cast, brace, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy, and shelf acetabuloplasty). The late results were classified according to the Stulberg classification. LLD was found in 33 patients and ranged from 1 to 5.2 cm (average 2.51 cm). The limb shortening was observed in Herring group B (average 2.18 cm) and C (average 2.82 cm) and was statistically significant more common in group C. The statistical analysis revealed no statistical difference between the age at onset, sex, and type of treatment with regard to LLD; nevertheless, patients in Herring group C with LLD were younger than patients in group B, and LLD was seen more often after varus osteotomy. The amount of residual shortening of the affected limb in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease at the end of skeletal growth seems to depend on the extent of involvement and the presence of a growth arrest. A varus osteotomy produces more significant shortening than other methods of treatments. The age at the onset of symptoms and sex do not influence the amount of LLD, but early onset of the disease can result in more severe limb shortening.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The purpose of the study was to evaluate the long-term results of uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) in young patients (below 50 years of age) with dysplastic coxarthrosis. In the last 20 years, 862 primary uncemented THA, were implanted in our Institution. This surgery was performed in 459 patients. From this group 220 hips in 177 patients (167 women and 10 men), who had dysplastic coxarthrosis, were included in our study. The left hip was operated in 66 and the right one in 68 patients. Bilateral surgery was performed in 43 cases. The means age at the time of hip surgery was 38.3 years (range from 18 to 49 years). The mean follow-up was 9.3 years (range from 2 years to 18.6 years). In 167 (75.8%) patients the operative treatment of DDH was performed during the early childhood (Colonna-Zahradnicek procedures, Dega, Pemberton and Salter pelvic osteotomies). Only 39 (17.7%) patients were treated in the childhood conservatively by means of overhead extension, Frejka pillow or Pavlik harness. All patients were evaluated clinically and radiological. For clinical evaluation the classification system proposed by Merle d'Aubigne and Postel with Chamley modification was used. For radiological evaluation of the steam implantation the classification system proposed by De Lee and Chamley was used and for the cup implantation the system by Gruen and Moreland. The femoral head displacement prior to THA surgery was classified according to Crowe at all. classification. Based on above mentioned criteria in 26 hips (11.8%) the final result was graded as very good, in 61 cases (27.7%) as good, in 94 hips (42.7%) as satisfactory and in the remaining 39 cases (17.8%) the final result was poor. We observed a very strong correlation between clinical and radiological results. According to Crowe and all. classification, in class I we noted 19 (61.3%) very good, 11 (35.5%) good, 1 (3.2%) satisfactory results. In class II in 5 cases (6.6%) the results was very good, 25 (32.9%) good and in 39 (51.3%) satisfactory results. In class III only in 2 cases the final result was graded as very good, and good in 23 hips (25.8%). In class IV there was no very good result, and we observed 19 (21.4%) poor results. In analyzed group in 37 (16.8%) patients the revision hip surgery was necessary because of aseptic prosthesis loosening. CONCLUSIONS The treatment of dysplastic coxarthrosis by means of THA is difficult. The high level of experience is necessary to perform this type of surgery. This type of THA should be performed only in selected orthopaedic centers. Starting the surgery one has to think about complications.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The main problem in total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery is aseptic loosening of prosthesis components. In most cases the phagocytes reaction against the wear particle during the hip movement is responsible for aseptic prosthesis loosening. To prevent this reaction different hip articulation are invented to reduce this reaction. One of these solutions is ceramic-ceramic hip prosthesis articulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results in patients who were treated because of coxarthrosis by means of ceramic-ceramic hip prosthesis. We analyzed 258 primary THA (222 patients, 116 women and 106 men) who were treated because of advanced coxarthrosis by Mittelmeier type hip endoprosthesis (ceramic-ceramic articulation). The mean age of patients at the surgery was 45.6 years and a mean follow-up 10.2 years. In most of our cases the idiopathic, traumatic and dysplastic coxarthrosis was noted. For clinical evaluation the classification system proposed by Merle d'Aubigne and Postel with Charnley modification was used. For radiological evaluation of the steam implantation the classification system proposed by De Lee and Charnley was used and for the cup implantation the system by Gruen and Moreland. In 87 patients (33.7%) the final results was graded as very good, in 96 (37.2%) as good, in 47 (18.2%) as satisfactory and in 28 patients (10.9%) the final results was poor. In analyzed group in 13 patients (5.0%) the revision surgery was necessary. CONCLUSIONS The long-term results of THA with the use of Mittelmeier type of hip prosthesis presented a very low percentage of aseptic loosening. This type of prosthesis gives very high patients satisfaction.

Abstract
Background. Most patients who develop Perthes disease have unilateral hip involvement. Bilateral involvement occurs in approximately 8-24% of cases. The purpose of this study was to compare the development and outcome of bilateral disease in two groups of patients, with synchronous and metachronous presentation. Material and methods. We reviewed the records and radiographs of 50 patients (41 boys, 9 girls) with bilateral Perthes disease treated conservatively or surgically. The average age at the onset of symptoms was 5 years 10 months (range from 2 years 6 months to 10 years 4 months). The average follow up was 14 years 7 months (range from 7 to 34 years). Results and Conclusions. Synchronous and metachronous involvement of both hips was noted in 52% and 48% of patients respectively. In the second affected hip, Perthes disease developed an average of 14 months later (range from 2 to 47 months). There was significantly more severe necrosis according to the Herring classification and worse outcome according to the Stulberg classification on the second side. In general, Stulberg class appeared not to correlate with synchronous or metachronous presentation. In the whole group with bilateral Perthes disease, better outcome was noted among younger patients and in hips with less severe avascular necrosis. Physicians should not preclude the diagnosis of Perthes disease in those children who present with both hips in the same Reinberg stage of the disease, because 19 out of 26 of our patients with metachronous onset presented with exactly this picture.

Results. There was no correlation between gender and unilateral or bilateral Perthes disease. Onset in patients with unilateral femoral head necrosis averaged 15 months later than in the bilateral group. The greatest incidence of Perthes' disease was between age 6 and 9 in the unilateral group and under 6 in the bilateral group. There was no difference between unilateral and bilateral Perthes disease according to Stulberg classification. Age at onset correlated with Stulberg classification. Better results were achieved significantly more often in younger patients. There was no correlation between age at onset and Herring's classification in either group. Statistical analysis revealed that patients with unilateral disease in Catterall group 4 were the youngest. Conclusion. The age at onset of bilateral Perthes disease averaged 15 months earlier than with unilateral disease. There was no significant difference between unilateral and bilateral femoral head necrosis according to the Stulberg classification.

Abstract
Background. Total knee alloplasty (TKA) is standard treatment for advanced gonarthrosis. Proper rehabilitation of the operated joint and the patient is essential in order to achieve a satisfactory functional outcome. The aim of our study was to compare rehabilitation methods used for patients recovering from TKA in the Orthopedic Clinic of the Medical University in Łódź, Poland. Material and methods. We studied 186 patients operated for advanced gonarthrosis, ranging in age from 29 to 80 (average 65.8), who had received 197 endoprotheses. From 1986 to 1989 the rehabilitation program included isometric exercises of the muscles in the operated joint, general fitness exercises in bed, and passive exercises of the knee conducted by a physiotherapist. The average stay during this period was 19.7 +/- 2.5 days. In 1989, continuous passive motion (CPM) using an electric rail was introduced to the rehabilitation program. Results. Thanks to the earlier additional flexibility of the operated joint, active exercises and weight bearing on the operated limb could be accelerated. The patients left the Clinic 2 weeks after surgery (13.6 +/- 2.5 days). The change in the rehabilitation program produced a statistically significant increase in the average range of flexion in the operated joint (p = 0.000001) in a significantly shorter time (p = 0.0000). Conclusion. Introducing CPM to the rehabilitation of TKA patients accelerates their progress and reduces hospitalization time, which improves the patients' emotional comfort and enables a faster return to an active life in society.

Abstract
The pathogenesis and treatment of heterotopic ossification still remains controversial. According to clinical study 164 patients after total hip replacement and review the recent literature the new hypothesis was established. This study showed that probably, heterotopic ossification of muscles is triggered by ischemia/reperfusion injury at the time of surgery procedure. That assumption was established on the base of causalities between ectopic bone formation and disturbances of connective tissue oxygenation observed at clinical trial and mentioned in the study.

Abstract
There is no doubt, that local anesthesia for knee arthroscopic surgery is rather simple, reliable, well tolerated, cost-effective and safe procedure acceptable also for one-day-surgery and outpatients. Patient's acceptance and satisfaction are behind those measurable data and could be predicted only after the question if the patients would prefer intraarticular analgesia when they should need to have another arthroscopy performed. The aim of the investigation was to compare this prediction with real patients feeling. Comparison was made between the types of anesthesia (regional, intraarticular) used for knee surgery, twice the same knee and patient. The retrospective data (mean 9 months after the last surgery) showed higher patients satisfaction (93.5%) with local anesthesia if compare with regional (2.6%) and femoral nerve block (3.9%).

Abstract
Malignant transformation of skin epithelium caused by chronic wound exudation in the absence of osteomyelitis is a rare event. The paper reports a case of 50 year old Caucasian male who presented with an exophytic tumor on the right hand. The tumor rapidly developed within previous area of unhealed skin wound that had existed only for about 5 months. Histological examination of the excised tumor revealed highly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). At that time of surgery nearby lymph node biopsy didn't reveal evidence for metastatic spreading. Patient underwent the limb salvage procedure with tumor resection followed by two stage, cross-flap skin plasty. This report indicates that there is a need to expand knowledge about SCC and about the treatment of the patients with these tumor by surgeons practicing in small medical centers.

Abstract
The study population consisted of 311 patients (50 female and 261 male) who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow up (361 hips). The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 6 years and 10 months (range: 2.5-13 years). All patients were treated by containment methods (bed rest and traction in abduction, brace, Petri cast, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy and shelf operation). Premature growth plate closure was estimated according to Bowen (central and lateral). Necrosis of the femoral head was classified according to Herring and Catterall, late results according to Stulberg and Mose and leg length discrepancy on scanograms. Article-trochanter distance (ATD) was estimated according to the Edgren methods. Premature femoral head growth plate closure was found in 61 hips (central--41 and lateral--20). Statistical analysis did not reveal any correlation between the gender and type of treatment and premature growth plate closure. The central pattern of growth plate closure was more often seen to 6 years of age at the onset and the lateral over 9 years of age at the onset (p = 0.0176). Premature growth plate closure was observed more often in Herring group C and Catterall group 4 (p = 0.0001). Disturbances in femoral head sphericity according to Mose increased (except with bilateral Perthes' disease) and ATD decreased in patients with premature growth plate closure. Also premature growth plate closure increased the leg length discrepancy in Perthes' disease. Thirty two (52.5%) hips with abnormal physeal growth were classified into type I or II according to Stulberg classification, 16 (26.2%) into type III and 13 (21.3%) into type IV or V. Premature growth plate closure in Perthes' disease is more common in huge necrosis of the femoral head. The central pattern of growth plate closure is more often in younger children (to 6 years of age) and the lateral in older (over 9 years of age). With abnormal physeal growth the greater trochanter overgrow and ATD decreased, the leg length discrepancy and disturbances in sphericity of the femoral head increased. Premature growth plate closure increased satisfactory and poor results according to Stulberg classification.

Abstract
Authors present an estimation of articulo-trochanteric-distance (ATD) and ATD index in patients with Perthes disease and if there is any correlation between ATD and ATD index and age at the onset, gender, type of treatment, Herring and Stulberg classification. The study population consisted of 242 patients (35 female and 207 male) who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow up. The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 7 years and 4 months. All patients were treated by containment methods (bed rest and traction in abduction, brace, Petri cast, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy and shelf operation). ATD was estimated according to the Edgren methods and ATD index was calculated as relation ATD on Perthes site to ATD in normal joint. The late results were classified according to the Stulberg classification. Statistical analysis did not revealed any correlation between the age at the onset, gender and ATD index and ATD during last follow up. Both parameters decreased with poor results according to the Stulberg classifications. ATD index and ATD were statistically significant less after surgical treatment than after non-operative treatment. The same relations were seen between patients with leg length discrepancy (LLD) and without LLD. Patients in Herring group A had statistically significant bigger both parameters than patients in group B, C and patients in Herring group B than C. Articulo-trochanteric-distance and ATD index decreased during follow up and ATD decreased also in normal joint. In our opinion ATD index is a more reliable radiological parameter than ATD. ATD index decreases with bigger necrosis of the femoral head and poor result according to the Stulberg classification. This parameter is an evidence of the dysfunction proximal femoral growth plate in patients with LLD. The most decreased ATD index was observed after surgical treatment. There was no correlation between the age at the onset, gender and ATD index at last follow up.

Abstract
The issue of a stabile, long lasting bone-implant interface is still very valid. One of the new models of uncemented hip prosthesis is the Bicontact prosthesis made by Aesculap. This four-part endoprosthesis offers two types of cups: threaded München type and spherical Plasmacup type. The prosthesis stem is a wedged type stem, porous in the proximal type. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the value of Bicontact prosthesis in treatment of coxarthrosis. Our material consisted of 69 patients (38 female and 31 male) with 72 operated hips. Average age of the patients was 50.8 years. The mean follow-up was 24.5 months. Clinical and radiological evaluation according to Merle d'Aubine-Postel classification with Charnley's modification yielded 88% very good and good results. In 11 hips a similar complication was noted--fracture of the femur during final hammering of the prosthesis stem into the medullary canal. This was immediately repaired by circular wire fixation without any influence on the final result. This complication was observed during the first procedures. The learning curve of surgical technique allowed us to avoid this complication during subsequent procedures. We concluded that type of hip prosthesis was is very useful in in treatment of coxarthrosis.

Abstract
The use of bone cement during total hip prosthesis implantation despite it's advantages triggers of some local and general complications. The paper presents and classifies most cement related complications, with special attention to vessel complications. This paper includes an external vein injury, which occurred 5 years after a total hip replacement procedure. Chronic erosion and mechanical stress of the iliac vein by a cement hook was the cause of this complication. It has been stress that most vascular complications are a result of imperfect surgical technique.

Abstract
The authors report a 44-year-old patient with at least a 10-year history of alcohol abuse in whom an organic brain syndrome developed with cerebellar ataxia, left-side hemiparesis and bulbar symptoms. MR imaging of the head demonstrated a large hyperintense focus in T2-weighted images involving the central part of the pons. Central pontine myelinolysis was diagnosed. Laboratory investigations showed no hyponatraemia. After withdrawal treatment and motor function rehabilitation the neurological symptoms regressed nearly completely. After 18 months control MR imaging demonstrated considerable reduction in the size of the myelinolysis area in the brainstem, despite the fact that the patient resumed alcohol drinking.

Abstract
We show that for a particular choice of the coupling parameters the Ashkin-Teller spin-glass neural network model with the Hebb learning rule and one condensed pattern yields the same thermodynamic properties as the four-state anisotropic Potts-glass neural network model. This equivalence is not seen at the level of the Hamiltonians.

Abstract
Heterotopic ossification is the most common complication after THR. The authors present the distribution of frequency of ectopic ossification after cementless THR using Mittelmeier and Parhofer-Mönch prosthesis and it's influence on THR outcome. 151 hip joints were evaluated with a follow-up period of more than 2 years. All procedures were performed by a lateral approach. The ectopic ossification was verified according to the Brooker classification. Clinical evaluation was performed according to the d'Aubigne-Postel method in Charnley's modification. The 3rd degree ectopic ossification was found in 14 hip joint and 4th degree ectopic ossification in 2 hip joints (together 10.6%). The positive correlation between the degree of ossification (3rd and 4th) and the decrease of range of motion of the hip joint along with an increase in pain after THR was found.

Abstract
Background. Problems encountered during revision hip arthroplasty are presented, based on 30 years of experience at the Orthopedic Clinic of the Medical University of Lodz.<br /> Material and methods. During this period of time 96 cases (5,13%) with aseptic hip loosening were diagnosed. All patients were evaluated clinically based o the Merle d'Aubigne-Postel criteria, and radiologically by means of De Lee and Gruen migration zones.<br /> Results. In our material hip loosening was most frequently observed in cases where a McKee-Farrar hip prosthesis had been used, and in cases with a PM uncemented acetabulum or uncemented Mittelmeier pin.<br /> Conclusions. The study showed that surgical technique plays the most significant role in aseptic loosening of hip replacement. The aseptic loosening of hip prostheses should be diagnosed early, and revision hip arthroplasty should be performed as soon as possible. This surgery must be preformed in specialized centers with adequate equipment and a team of experienced surgeons.

Abstract
The results are presented of MRI studies of the brain and spinal cord in patients with neurological symptoms in the course of certain diseases of the haemopoietic system (leukaemias, lymphomas). The analysis showed that MR images, although not specific, can be very useful for the evaluation of the intensity and topography of haematological lesions in the central nervous system. However, the diagnosis of these processes is not easy. In the differential diagnosis focal lesions of vasogenic origin, infections and radiation-induced lesions should be considered, and in cases of lymphoma--metastases are a possibility.
