Higher hydrogen fractions in dielectric polymers boost self-healing in electrical capacitors

Electrical capacitors are omnipresent in modern electronic devices, in which they swiftly release large portions of energy on demand. The capacitors may suffer from arc discharges due to local structural heterogeneities in their components and inappropriate exploitation practices. High energies of the arc discharge are transferred as phonons to the electrode and dielectric film, which burn out locally. The dielectric breakdown takes place. The complete burnout leads to the isolation of the failed region and the capacitor's self-healing. The emerging soot can form a semiconducting channel and damage the capacitor. The efficiency of self-healing depends on the dielectric properties of the soot and its amount. We employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to reveal the regularities of the high-temperature polymer destruction and record by-products emerging during this process. We found the formation of multiple volatile low-molecular compounds and contaminated quantum carbon dots (CQD) designated as soot. The percentage of carbon in soot is higher compared to the polymer. Furthermore, the CQD contains numerous unsaturated C-C bonds and aromatic C6-rings suggesting an enhanced electrical conductivity. The size of the CQD depends on the available volume, i.e., on the spatial scale of the dielectric breakdown. The elemental composition of the soot is unique for each polymer. Polypropylene undergoes the most efficient self-healing thanks to containing a large molar fraction of hydrogen atoms. The results are addressed to the experts in electrical engineering and polymer fine-tuning.

Chemical similarity of dialkyl carbonates and carbon dioxide opens an avenue for novel greenhouse gas scavengers: cheap recycling and low volatility via experiments and simulations

Global warming linked to the industrial emissions of greenhouse gases may be the end of mankind unless it is adequately and timely handled. To prevent irreversible changes to the climate of the Earth, numerous research groups are striving to develop robust CO₂ sorbents. Dialkyl carbonates (DACs) and CO₂ exhibit obvious chemical similarities in their structure and properties. The degrees of oxidation of all atoms composing DACs and CO₂ are identical resulting in very similar nucleophilicities and electrophilicities of all interaction centers. While both compounds possess relatively high partial atomic charges on their polar moieties, the molecular geometries prevent tight binding of the head groups. The computed DAC-DAC binding energies are ∼40 kJ mol^-1, whereas the effect of the alkyl chain length is marginal. The phase transition points and shear viscosities of DACs are very low. We herein hypothesize and numerically rationalize that DACs represent noteworthy physical sorbents for CO₂ thanks to the similar sorbent-CO₂ and sorbent-sorbent interaction energies. By reporting in silico-derived sorption thermodynamics at various conditions, spectral and structural properties, and experimentally derived CO₂ capacities and recyclabilities, we highlight the mutual affinity of DACs and CO₂. Indeed, the experimentally determined CO₂ sorption capacity of 0.88 mol% (diethyl carbonate) at 278.15 K and 30 bar is competitive. The unprecedentedly low DAC-CO₂ binding energies, ∼14 kJ mol^-1, suggest a low-cost desorption process and outstanding recyclability of the sorbent. We also note that DACs possessing long alkyl chains (butyl, hexyl, octyl) exhibit negligible volatilities, while preserving the liquid aggregate state over a practically important temperature range. The reported results may foster the development of a new class of CO₂ scavengers with possibly quite peculiar characteristics.

Carbon Dioxide Chemisorption by Ammonium and Phosphonium Ionic Liquids: Quantum Chemistry Calculations

Carbon capture and storage is an important technological endeavor aiming to improve the ecology by combating global warming. The present work investigates reaction paths that are responsible for CO₂ chemisorption by the ammonium- and phosphonium-based ionic liquids containing an aprotic heterocyclic anion 2-cyanopyrrolide. We exemplify that 2 mol of CO₂ per 1 mol of the gas scavenger can be theoretically fixed by such ionic liquids. Both the cation and anion participate in the chemisorption. The corresponding standard enthalpies and potential energies are moderately negative. The chemisorption reaction, as revealed by the simulations of competing pathways, is started by the donation of the proton from the cation to the anion. The double covalent bond in the cation's structure emerges. The barriers to all reactions involving the phosphonium-based cation are relatively small and favor practical applications of the considered sorbents. The performance of the ammonium-based cation is less favorable due to the inherent instability of the tetraalkylammonium ylide. The role of phosphonium ylide in the mechanism of the reaction is carefully characterized. The performance of the aprotic anion as a CO₂ scavenger is unaffected by the chemical identity of the counterion. The essential heights of the identified steric barriers underline the necessity to simulate the entire structures of the reacting species to obtain a reliable description of chemisorption. The reported results foster a fundamental understanding of the outstanding CO₂ sorption performance of the quaternary ammonium- and phosphonium-based 2-cyanopyrrolides.

Ammonium-, phosphonium- and sulfonium-based 2-cyanopyrrolidine ionic liquids for carbon dioxide fixation

The development of carbon dioxide (CO₂) scavengers is an acute problem nowadays because of the global warming problem. Many groups around the globe intensively develop new greenhouse gas scavengers. Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are seen as a proper starting point to synthesize more environmentally friendly and high-performance sorbents. Aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHA) represent excellent agents for carbon capture and storage technologies. In the present work, we investigate RTILs in which both the weakly coordinating cation and AHA bind CO₂. The ammonium-, phosphonium-, and sulfonium-based 2-cyanopyrrolidines were investigated using the state-of-the-art method to describe the thermochemistry of the CO₂ fixation reactions. The infrared spectra and electronic and structural properties were simulated at the hybrid density functional level of theory to characterize the reactants and products of the chemisorption reactions. We conclude that the proposed CO₂ capturing mechanism is thermodynamically allowed and discuss the difference between different families of RTILs. Quite unusually, the intramolecular electrostatic attraction plays an essential role in stabilizing the zwitterionic products of the CO₂ chemisorption. The difference in chemisorption performance between the families of RTILs is linked to sterical hindrances and nucleophilicities of the α- and β-carbon atoms of the aprotic cations. Our results rationalize previous experimental CO₂ sorption measurements (Brennecke et al., 2021).

Binary mixtures of novel sulfoxides and water: intermolecular structure, dynamic properties, thermodynamics, and cluster analysis

Higher molecular weight dialkyl sulfoxides attract interest in the context of biomedical sciences due to their ability to penetrate phospholipid bilayers, dissolve drugs, and serve as cryoprotectants. Intermolecular interactions with water, a paramount component of the living cell, determine the performance of the sulfoxide-based artificial systems in their prospective applications. Herein, we simulated a wide composition range of sulfoxide/water mixtures, up to 85 w/w% sulfoxide, using classical molecular dynamics to determine structure, dynamics, and thermodynamics as a function of the mixture composition. As found, both diethyl sulfoxide (DESO) and ethyl methyl sulfoxide (EMSO) are strongly miscible with water. DESO- and EMSO-based aqueous mixtures exhibit similar structure and thermodynamic properties, however, quite different dynamic properties over the entire range of compositions. Strong deviations from an ideal mixture of between 30-50 mol% (based on molar volume) of sulfoxide content lead to relatively high dynamic viscosities of the mixtures. The free energy of mixing with water is only slightly more favorable for EMSO than for DESO. The results, for the first time, quantify high miscibilities of both sulfoxides with water and motivate comprehensive in vivo investigation of the proposed mixtures.

Atomically precise understanding of nanofluids: nanodiamonds and carbon nanotubes in ionic liquids

A nanofluid (NF) is composed of a base liquid and suspended nanoparticles (NPs). High-performance NFs exhibit significantly better heat conductivities, as compared to their base liquids. In the present work, we applied all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize diffusive and ballistic energy transfer mechanisms within nanodiamonds (NDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and N-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL). We showed that heat transfer within both NDs and CNTs is orders of magnitude faster than that in the surrounding IL, whereas diffusion of all particles in the considered NF is similar. Intramolecular heat transfer in NPs is a key factor determining the difference of NFs from base liquids. Solvation free energy of NDs and CNTs in ILs was estimated from MD simulations. The geometric dimensions of NPs were shown to be a major source of entropic penalty. Temperature adjusts the entropic factor substantially by modifying a genuine local structure of the bulk base liquid. Our work contributes to engineering more stable and productive suspensions of NPs in ILs, which are necessary for essential progress in the field of NFs.

Imidazolium Ionic Liquid Mediates Black Phosphorus Exfoliation while Preventing Phosphorene Decomposition

Forthcoming applications in electronics and optoelectronics make phosphorene a subject of vigorous research efforts. Solvent-assisted exfoliation of phosphorene promises affordable delivery in industrial quantities for future applications. We demonstrate, using equilibrium, steered and umbrella sampling molecular dynamics, that the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIM][BF₄] ionic liquid is an excellent solvent for phosphorene exfoliation. The presence of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, as well as substantial shear viscosity, allows [EMIM][BF₄] simultaneously to facilitate separation of phosphorene sheets and to protect them from getting in direct contact with moisture and oxygen. The exfoliation thermodynamics is moderately unfavorable, which indicates that an external stimulus is necessary. Unexpectedly, [EMIM][BF₄] does not coordinates phosphorene by π-electron stacking with the imidazole ring. Instead, the solvation proceeds via hydrophobic side chains, while polar imidazole rings form an electrostatically stabilized protective layer. The simulations suggest that further efforts in solvent engineering for phosphorene exfoliation should concentrate on use of weakly coordinating ions and grafting groups that promote stronger dispersion interactions and on elongation of nonpolar chains.

Microwave reduction of graphene oxide rationalized by reactive molecular dynamics

Obtaining graphene (GRA) in industrial quantities is among the most urgent goals in today's nanotechnology. Elegant methods involve the oxidation of graphite with its subsequent solvent-assisted exfoliation. The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is challenging leading to a highly-disordered oxygen-rich material. A particularly successful microwave-induced reduction of GO was reported recently (Science, 2016, 353, 1413-1416). We mimic the experiment by reactive molecular dynamics and establish the molecular mechanisms of reduction and their time scales as functions of temperature. We show that the rapid removal of oxygen groups achieved by microwave heating leaves GRA sheets intact. The epoxy groups are most stable within GO. They can rearrange into the carbonyl groups upon quick heating. It is important to avoid creating holes upon graphite oxidation. They cannot be healed easily and undermine GRA thermal stability and electronic properties. The edge oxygen groups cannot be removed by irradiation, but their effect is marginal on the properties of μm GRA sheets. We demonstrate that different oxygen groups are removed from GO at drastically different temperatures. Therefore, it is possible to obtain separate fractions, e.g. carbonyl-, hydroxyl- and carboxyl-free partially reduced GO. Our results guide the improvement of the GO reduction methods and can be tested directly by experiment.

Solubility origin at the nanoscale: enthalpic and entropic contributions in polar and nonpolar environments

Nanostructures are known to be poorly soluble, irrespective of their elemental composition, shape, electronic structure, dipole moment, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity and the employed solvent. The methods of colloid chemistry allow for preparing suspensions - metastable systems, the stabilities of which differ greatly from one another - but not real solutions. A systematic investigation of the solubility origin at the nanoscale is hereby reported in terms of its fundamental constituents: enthalpy and entropy. Slightly different one-dimensional solutes - narrow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different lengths - were considered in hydrophilic (water) and hydrophobic (benzene) environments. We decompose the process of solvation into the solid → gas transition (sublimation) and the gas → liquid transition (condensation). Sublimation is a thermodynamically unfavorable process under room conditions, while the condensation transition depends on the solvent-solute interactions (enthalpic contribution). Unlike solvation of small molecules, solvation of the nanostructures results in a significant alteration of entropy. This alteration is proportional to the linear dimensions of the nanostructure. If the solvent exhibits peculiar solvent-solvent interactions (such as hydrogen bonding in water), solvation is entropically forbidden, irrespective of the solute nature and its nanoscale dimensions. In the case of the hydrophobic solvent (benzene), the condensation transition can be both enthalpically and entropically favorable. The free energy of solvation is in direct proportion to the CNT length. While highlighting principal difficulties in solvating nanostructures, this paper discusses an optimal choice of solvents for solutes exhibiting hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with their environments. Our results allow us to predict the solvation of an arbitrary nanostructure using its small, about 2 nm, atomistic model.

Boron doping of graphene-pushing the limit

Boron-doped derivatives of graphene have been intensely investigated because of their electronic and catalytic properties. The maximum experimentally observed concentration of boron atoms in graphite was 2.35% at 2350 K. By employing quantum chemistry coupled with molecular dynamics, we identified the theoretical doping limit for single-layer graphene at different temperatures, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve much higher boron doping concentrations. According to the calculations, 33.3 mol% of boron does not significantly undermine thermal stability, whereas 50 mol% of boron results in critical backbone deformations, which occur when three or more boron atoms enter the same six-member ring. Even though boron is less electro-negative than carbon, it tends to act as an electron acceptor in the vicinity of C-B bonds. The dipole moment of B-doped graphene depends strongly on the distribution of dopant atoms within the sheet. Compared with N-doped graphene, the dopant-dopant bonds are less destructive in the present system. The reported results motivate efforts to synthesize highly B-doped graphene for semiconductor and catalytic applications. The theoretical predictions can be validated through direct chemical synthesis.

Haber Process Made Efficient by Hydroxylated Graphene: Ab Initio Thermochemistry and Reactive Molecular Dynamics

The Haber-Bosch process is the main industrial method for producing ammonia from diatomic nitrogen and hydrogen. We use a combination of ab initio thermochemical analysis and reactive molecular dynamics to demonstrate that a significant increase in the ammonia production yield can be achieved using hydroxylated graphene and related species. Exploiting the polarity difference between N2/H2 and NH3, as well as the universal proton acceptor behavior of NH3, we demonstrate a strong shift of the equilibrium of the Haber-Bosch process toward ammonia (ca. 50 kJ mol(-1) enthalpy gain and ca. 60-70 kJ mol(-1) free energy gain). The modified process is of significant importance to the chemical industry.

Pressure-driven opening of carbon nanotubes

The closing and opening of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is essential for their applications in nanoscale chemistry and biology. We report reactive molecular dynamics simulations of CNT opening triggered by internal pressure of encapsulated gas molecules. Confined argon generates 4000 bars of pressure inside capped CNT and lowers the opening temperature by 200 K. Chemical interactions greatly enhance the efficiency of CNT opening: fluorine-filled CNTs open by fluorination of carbon bonds at temperature and pressure that are 700 K and 1000 bar lower than for argon-filled CNTs. Moreover, pressure induced CNT opening by confined gases leaves the CNT cylinders intact and removes only the fullerene caps, while the empty CNT decomposes completely. In practice, the increase in pressure can be achieved by near-infrared light, which penetrates through water and biological tissues and is absorbed by CNTs, resulting in rapid local heating. Spanning over a thousand of bars and Kelvin, the reactive and non-reactive scenarios of CNT opening represent extreme cases and allow for a broad experimental control over properties of the CNT interior and release conditions of the confined species. The detailed insights into the thermodynamic conditions and chemical mechanisms of the pressure-induced CNT opening provide practical guidelines for the development of novel nanoreactors, catalysts, photo-catalysts, imaging labels and drug delivery vehicles.

Electron Solvation in Liquid Ammonia: Lithium, Sodium, Magnesium, and Calcium as Electron Sources

A free electron in solution, known as a solvated electron, is the smallest possible anion. Alkali and alkaline earth atoms serve as electron donors in solvents that mediate outer-sphere electron transfer. We report herein ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of lithium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium in liquid ammonia at 250 K. By analyzing the electronic properties and the ionic and solvation structures and dynamics, we systematically characterize these metals as electron donors and ammonia molecules as electron acceptors. We show that the solvated metal strongly modifies the properties of its solvation shells and that the observed effect is metal-specific. Specifically, the radius and charge exhibit major impacts. The single solvated electron present in the alkali metal systems is distributed more uniformly among the solvent molecules of each metal's two solvation shells. In contrast, alkaline earth metals favor a less uniform distribution of the electron density. Alkali and alkaline earth atoms are coordinated by four and six NH3 molecules, respectively. The smaller atoms, Li and Mg, are stronger electron donors than Na and Ca. This result is surprising, as smaller atoms in a column of the periodic table have higher ionization potentials. However, it can be explained by stronger electron donor-acceptor interactions between the smaller atoms and the solvent molecules. The structure of the first solvation shell is sharpest for Mg, which has a large charge and a small radius. Solvation is weakest for Na, which has a small charge and a large radius. Weak solvation leads to rapid dynamics, as reflected in the diffusion coefficients of NH3 molecules of the first two solvation shells and the Na atom. The properties of the solvated electrons established in the present study are important for radiation chemistry, synthetic chemistry, condensed-matter charge transfer, and energy sources.

Synergistic Amination of Graphene: Molecular Dynamics and Thermodynamics

Functionalization of graphene using organic moieties constitutes an affordable way to modulate its physical and chemical properties. Finding an exact structural formula of functionalized graphene using experimental approaches is challenging. We studied in detail the thermal stability and thermodynamics of amino- and ethylamino-graphene and found a surprising synergistic effect: more amino groups stabilize functionalized graphene favoring further amination, whereas a small concentration of amino groups is unstable in many cases. The functional groups can be attached either on the same side or simultaneously on different sides of the graphene sheet. Deformation of functionalized graphene is proportional to the number of amino groups. Complete amination leading to formation of the ultimate product, Cx(NH2)x, is hindered sterically. Our study assists in the determination of the structure of chemically modified graphene and makes specific predictions that can be tested and validated experimentally.

Structure and energetics of graphene oxide isomers: ab initio thermodynamic analysis

Graphene oxide (GO) holds significant promise for electronic devices and nanocomposite materials. A number of models were proposed for the GO structure, combining carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl and epoxide groups at different locations. The complexity and variety of GO isomers, whose thermodynamic stability and formation kinetics depend on the applied conditions, make determination of the GO structure with atomistic precision challenging. We report high level theoretical investigation of multiple molecular configurations, which are anticipated in GO. We conclude that all oxygen containing groups at the GO surface are thermodynamically permitted, whereas the 'edge' positions are systematically more favorable than the 'center' and 'side' positions. We discuss a potentially novel type of chemical bond or bonding reinforcement in GO, which consists of a covalent bond and a strong electrostatic contribution from a polarized graphene plane. We observe and analyze significant modifications of the graphene geometry and electronic structure upon oxidation. The reported thermodynamic data guide experiments aimed at deciphering the GO chemical composition and structure, and form the basis for predicting GO properties required for nano-technological applications.

Nitrogen-Nitrogen Bonds Undermine Stability of N-Doped Graphene

Two-dimensional alloys of carbon and nitrogen draw strong interest due to prospective applications in nanomechanical and optoelectronic devices. The stability of these chemical structures can vary greatly as a function of chemical composition and structure. The present study employs hybrid density functional theory and reactive molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate how many nitrogen atoms can be incorporated into the graphene sheet without destroying it. We conclude that (1) the C/N = 56:29 structure and all nitrogen-poorer structures maintain stability at 1000 K; (2) the stability suffers greatly in the presence of N-N bonds; and (3) distribution of electron density depends heavily on the structural pattern in the N-doped graphene. Our calculations support the experimental efforts aimed at production of highly N-doped graphene and generate important insights into the mechanisms of tuning graphene mechanical and optoelectronic properties. The theoretical prediction can be tested directly by chemical synthesis.

Enhanced stability of the model mini-protein in amino acid ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions

Using molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of model mini-protein was thoroughly characterized in the imidazolium-based amino acid ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions. Complete substitution of water by organic cations and anions further results in hindered conformational flexibility of the mini-protein. This observation suggests that amino acid-based ionic liquids are able to defend proteins from thermally induced denaturation. We show by means of radial distributions that the mini-protein is efficiently solvated by both solvents due to a good mutual miscibility. Amino acid-based anions prevail in the first coordination sphere of positively charged sites of the mini-protein whereas water molecules prevail in the first coordination sphere of negatively charged sites of the mini-protein.

Systematic refinement of Canongia Lopes-Pádua force field for pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquids

Reliable force field (FF) is a central issue in successful prediction of physical chemical properties via computer simulations. While Canongia Lopes-Pádua (CL&P) FF provides good to excellent thermodynamics and structure of pure room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), it suffers from drastically and systematically underestimated ionic motion. This occurs due to neglected partial electron transfer from the anion to the cation, resulting in unphysically small simulated self-diffusion and conductivity and high shear viscosities. We report a systematic refinement of the CL&P FF for six pyrrolidinium-based RTILs (1-N-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium dicyanamide, triflate, bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, tetrafluoroborate, chloride). The elaborated procedure accounts for specific cation-anion interactions in the liquid phase. Once these interactions are described effectively, experimentally determined transport properties can be reproduced with an acceptable accuracy. Together with the original CL&P parameters, our force field fosters computational investigation of ionic liquids. In addition, the reported results shed more light on the chemical nature of cation-anion binding in various families of RTILs.

Buckybomb: Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Energetic materials, such as explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics, are widely used in civilian and military applications. Nanoscale explosives represent a special group because of the high density of energetic covalent bonds. The reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF) study of nitrofullerene decomposition reported here provides a detailed chemical mechanism of explosion of a nanoscale carbon material. Upon initial heating, C60(NO2)12 disintegrates, increasing temperature and pressure by thousands of Kelvins and bars within tens of picoseconds. The explosion starts with NO2 group isomerization into C-O-N-O, followed by emission of NO molecules and formation of CO groups on the buckyball surface. NO oxidizes into NO2, and C60 falls apart, liberating CO2. At the highest temperatures, CO2 gives rise to diatomic carbon. The study shows that the initiation temperature and released energy depend strongly on the chemical composition and density of the material.

The effects of globotriaosylceramide tail saturation level on bilayer phases

Globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) is a glycosphingolipid present in the plasma membrane that is the natural receptor of the bacterial Shiga toxin. The unsaturation level of Gb3 acyl chains has a drastic impact on lipid bilayer properties and phase behaviour, and on many Gb3-related cellular processes. For example: the Shiga toxin B subunit forms tubular invaginations in the presence of Gb3 with an unsaturated acyl chain (U-Gb3), while in the presence of Gb3 with a saturated acyl chain (S-Gb3) such invagination does not occur. We have used all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of the Gb3 concentration and its acyl chain saturation on the phase behaviour of a mixed bilayer of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine and Gb3. The simulation results show that: (1) the Gb3 acyl chains (longer tails) from one leaflet interdigitate into the opposing leaflet and lead to significant bilayer rigidification and immobilisation of the lipid tails. S-Gb3 can form a highly ordered, relatively immobile phase which is resistant to bending while these changes for U-Gb3 are not significant. (2) At low concentrations of Gb3, U-Gb3 and S-Gb3 have a similar impact on the bilayer reminiscent of the effect of sphingomyelin lipids and (3) At higher Gb3 concentrations, U-Gb3 mixes better with dioleoylphosphatidylcholine than S-Gb3. Our simulations also provide the first molecular level structural model of Gb3 in membranes.

The Band Gap of Graphene Is Efficiently Tuned by Monovalent Ions

Small monovalent ions are able to polarize carbonaceous nanostructures significantly. We report a systematic investigation of how monovalent and divalent ions influence valence electronic structure of graphene. Pure density functional theory is employed to compute electronic energy levels. We show that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of an alkali ion (Li(+), Na(+)) fits between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and LUMO of graphene, in such a way as to tune the bottom of the conduction band (i.e., band gap). In turn, Mg(2+) shares its orbitals with graphene. The corresponding binding energy is ca. 4 times higher than that in the case of alkali ions. The reported insights provide inspiration for engineering electrical properties of the graphene-containing systems.

Can inorganic salts tune electronic properties of graphene quantum dots?

In this work, we apply density functional theory to study the effect of neutral ionic clusters adsorbed on the GQD surface. We conclude that both the HOMO and the LUMO of GQDs are very sensitive to the presence of ions and to their distance from the GQD surface. However, the alteration of the band gap itself is modest, as opposed to the case of free ions (recent reports). Our work fosters progress in modulating electronic properties of nanoscale carbonaceous materials.
