Abstract
The objectives of this research were to study the effect of UV irradiation on quality characteristics of mango juice during cold storage. Mango juice exposed to UV radiation was also used to determine zero-order and first-order kinetic models of microbial (total plate count, yeast and mold count, and Escherichia coli) reduction. According to the microbiological results, UV light at 120 J/cm2 caused a 5.19 log reduction. It was found that microbial inactivation of all tested microorganisms followed first-order kinetic model. The treatments did not differ significantly in terms of the quality metrics. L*, b*, pH, total soluble solid, total phenolic compound, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity as measured by the DPPH and FRAP assay all tended to decline during storage at 4 °C, whereas a*, ∆E, titratable acidity, total plate count, yeast and mold count, as well as the total plate count, had an increasing trend. During storage at 4 °C, UV irradiation increased the shelf life of mango juice by about 14 days compared to the control sample. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the potential of UV treatment as an alternative to thermal pasteurization for preserving mango juice quality and safety while also prolonging shelf life.

Abstract
Honey bees and other pollinators are critical for food production and nutritional security but face multiple survival challenges. The effect of climate change on honey bee colony losses is only recently being explored. While correlations between higher winter temperatures and greater colony losses have been noted, the impacts of warmer autumn and winter temperatures on colony population dynamics and age structure as an underlying cause of reduced colony survival have not been examined. Focusing on the Pacific Northwest US, our objectives were to (a) quantify the effect of warmer autumns and winters on honey bee foraging activity, the age structure of the overwintering cluster, and spring colony losses, and (b) evaluate indoor cold storage as a management strategy to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. We perform simulations using the VARROAPOP population dynamics model driven by future climate projections to address these objectives. Results indicate that expanding geographic areas will have warmer autumns and winters extending honey bee flight times. Our simulations support the hypothesis that late-season flight alters the overwintering colony age structure, skews the population towards older bees, and leads to greater risks of colony failure in the spring. Management intervention by moving colonies to cold storage facilities for overwintering has the potential to reduce honey bee colony losses. However, critical gaps remain in how to optimize winter management strategies to improve the survival of overwintering colonies in different locations and conditions. It is imperative that we bridge the gaps to sustain honey bees and the beekeeping industry and ensure food and nutritional security.

Abstract
Corydalis Rhizoma (CR, Yanhusuo in Chinese) has been widely used as an analgesic in herbal medicine and functional food. Cases of fungal and mycotoxin contamination in CR have been reported. In this study, the composition and diversity of fungal microbiome in CR samples from four herbal markets and two processing methods were investigated by DNA metabarcoding. Variations of the fungal microbiome in CR during cold and conventional storage were monitored. Results showed that Aspergillus was the dominant genus and saprotroph was the dominant trophic mode. Six potential toxigenic fungi, namely, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus ostianus, Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium oxalicum, and Trichothecium roseum, were detected. Differences in fungal composition and diversity among various groups based on collection areas and processing methods were also observed. Moreover, the relative abundance of dominant genera in CR samples stored at different temperatures was significantly different and changed with storage time. This study is the first to reveal the influence of collection areas, processing methods, and storage conditions on the fungal microbiome in CR, which was expected to provide a basis for control strategies of fungal contamination in the industrial chain of CR.

Abstract
Cold transport of the cauda epididymides is a useful technique for shipping laboratory rat sperm. Cold transport of rat sperm avoids potential risks of microbiological infection, animal escape or death, and animal welfare issues. Previously, we reported that a cold-storage solution containing dimethyl sulfoxide and quercetin maintained the fertility of cold-stored rat sperm. However, cold-stored rat sperm exhibited a decreased fertilization rate after 24-h storage. To recover the fertility of cold-stored sperm, we focused on the effects of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a cholesterol acceptor that induces sperm capacitation. We sought to determine the optimal concentration of BSA in fertilization medium based on the fertility of cold-stored rat sperm. High concentrations of BSA (40 mg/ml) enhanced the fertilization rate of cold-stored rat sperm and maintained sperm fertility for 144 h. Embryos derived from cold-stored and BSA-treated sperm normally developed into pups after embryo transfer. In summary, high BSA concentrations enhanced the fertility of cold-stored rat sperm and prolonged the storage period to 144 h, thereby expanding the transportable region for genetically engineered rats.

Abstract
As sperm cryopreservation and other assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) advance in common amphibian species, focus on applying non-lethal sperm collection methods to the conservation and genetic management of threatened species is imperative. The goal of this study was to examine the application of logistically practical ART protocols in a threatened frog (Litoria aurea). First, we tested the efficacy of various concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (20, 40 IU/g bodyweight) and Gonadotropin releasing hormone antagonist (0.25 µg/g and 0.5 µg/g body weight GnRH-a) on the induction of spermatozoa. Using the samples obtained from the previous trials, we tested the effect of cold storage and cryopreservation protocols on long-term refrigerated storage and post-thaw sperm recovery. Our major findings include: (1) high quality sperm were induced with 20 and 40 IU/g bodyweight of (hCG); (2) proportions of live, motile sperm post-thaw, were recovered at higher levels than previously reported for L. aurea (>50%) when preserved with 15% v/v DMSO and 1% w/v sucrose; and (3) spermic urine stored at 5 °C retained motility for up to 14 days. Our findings demonstrate that the protocols developed in this study allowed for successful induction and recovery of high-quality spermatozoa from a threatened Australian anuran, L. aurea, providing a prime example of how ARTs can contribute to the conservation of rare and threatened species.

Abstract
Lemon fruits are well recognized for their richness in antioxidants. The present study was conducted to maintain the antioxidant properties of lemon fruits under long term cold storage. Fruits were given different treatments of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) @ 50, 100 and 150 ppm plus beeswax (BW) @ 2% and were stored at 6-8 °C and 90-95% RH for 60 days. At the end of storage, fruits coated with NAA (50 ppm) + BW (2%) retained 42.14 and 34.61% antioxidants, 62.72 and 56.54% phenolic content and 17.72 and 13.80% hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity in peel and pulp, respectively as compared to the control. This treatment also resulted in lesser weight loss (5.27%), higher ascorbic acid content (46.31 mg 100 ml-1 juice) and titratable acidity (5.23%). Hence, NAA + BW coatings were promising for the maintenance of the postharvest antioxidant quality of stored lemons. Abstract
Grape is the world's economic horticultural crop; it is perishable due to various pathogens and abiotic stress attributed to water loss-induced issues. To address these postharvest problems, this research investigates the effects of light irradiation on anthocyanins synthesis and energy metabolism in stored grapes to enhance their postharvest quality. The activities of chlorophyllase (1.17 U gk-1), Mg-dechelatase (351.69 U gk-1), chlorophyll-degraded peroxidase (3.49 U gk-1), and pheophytinase (0.85 U gk-1) were significantly higher in the control fruit than in the treated fruit at the end of storage. The red-light treatment showed higher levels of anthocyanins biosynthesis-related enzymes than green, blue-light, and control treatments. Additionally, light irradiation resulted in a decrease in adenosine triphosphate, adenosine diphosphate, adenosine monophosphate, and energy charge. This was attributed to decreased activity of energy metabolism enzymes, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate content, and increased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide content. These findings offer a theoretical foundation for optimizing grape coloration and energy metabolism during storage, thus prolonging the shelf-life of grapes by improving quality attributes. This research highlights the potential of light irradiation as a technique for enhancing the postharvest quality of agricultural products.

Abstract
Shrimp, renowned for its exceptional nutritional value, holds a pivotal position within the realm of aquatic products. The supplementation of extra oxygen to shrimp throughout the entire supply chain has found application within the commercial seafood market. In this study, a dual-platform metabolic analysis, coupled with multivariate data analysis, was employed to discern the impact of supplementary oxygen. Furthermore, this approach facilitated the construction of the post-mortem metabolic profile of shrimp during cold storage. A noticeable decrease of alcohols, ketones and carbohydrates which are related to the energy metabolism in shrimp has been found during cold storage, compared to the fresh shrimp. The degradation of nutritional amino acids was alleviated in shrimp after 4 h of extra oxygen supplement. Furthermore, a higher concentration of identified fatty acids, integral to lipid metabolism and functioning as flavor compounds was observed in shrimp subsequent to oxygen supplementation. Therefore, the additional oxygen supplementation exerted influence on multiple metabolic pathways, including nitrogen metabolism, amino acid and peptide metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and lipid metabolism. This study has constructed a comprehensive post-mortem metabolic profile of shrimp during cold storage, thereby establishing a theoretical foundation for the utilization of oxygen supplements in the preservation of seafood.

Abstract
Fish and shellfish are important sources of high quality lipids, especially omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. In most countries, seafood is eaten cooked to eliminate any potential parasites and pathogens. In addition, cold storage plays an important role in extending the shelf life of seafood. However, both cooking and storage processes can cause alterations in the lipid content and fatty acid profile of fish and shellfish. Although the lipid nutritional quality of fish and shellfish have recently been reviewed, these reviews mainly focus on raw seafood, and information on the impact of food processing on the lipid nutritional quality of fish and shellfish still lacks coherence. Therefore, this study was carried out to provides a critical reviews on the effects of food processing, especially cooking and cold storge, on the lipid nutritional quality of fish and shellfish. Overall, from the perspective of lipid nutritional quality, baking and steaming are the most recommended cooking methods for fish and shellfish, respectively, while it is strongly not recommended to fry seafood with margarine. For cold storage, 3 days and 2 weeks are the most recommended storage periods for refrigeration and frozen storage, respectively. This article can provides consumers with useful information to choose food preparation and storage methods based on their personal interest in specific lipid nutritional quality indicators.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between lipid oxidation and the development of volatile compounds (VOCs) in grouper lipid during cold storage, lipids were extracted from grouper as a single-factor study to avoid the complex interactions between microorganisms and proteins. Lipid oxidation during storage and the content of 12 long-chain fatty acids (FAs) in grouper lipids were evaluated. The HS-SPME-GC-MS technique was used to analyze the VOCs in grouper lipids, and a total of 13 key VOCs, primarily comprising alcohols and aldehydes, were screened. Pearson correlation analysis showed a strong acorrelation between these 13 key VOCs, which influenced the overall flavor of grouper lipids, and lipid oxidation, mainly involving secondary oxidation of lipids and the oxidation of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Possible solutions for grouper lipid deterioration were proposed, providing a reference for maintaining the overall quality of grouper and regulating flavor formation.

Abstract
The study assessed chicken egg storage duration and short periods of incubation during egg storage (SPIDES) on embryo development. Eggs samples from 310 eggs from 72-week-old hybrid layer breeder flocks were divided and stored at 16 °C and 75% RH for 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, 17, and 21 days (D). Some eggs were also divided between 14D and 21D alone and stored. One subgroup received heat application for 6 h during storage resulting in 0-h × 14D (control); 0-h × 21D (control); 6-h × 14D (SPIDES) and 6-h × 21D (SPIDES). Storage durations between 1D and 21D did not influence most egg quality parameters. The interaction of storage duration and SPIDES affected initial, final egg weights and egg weight loss. SPIDES eggs recorded heavier wet embryos than non-SPIDES eggs at embryonic days (ED) 4, ED7, ED11, and dry embryo weight at ED11. SPIDES resulted in longer embryos at ED4 and ED11. In 21D stored eggs hatchability was higher in SPIDES compared to non-SPIDES treatments (66.7 vs. 48.3%). The reverse effect of SPIDES occurred in 14D stored eggs. In conclusion, the study shows positive effect of SPIDES in longer stored eggs and could be due to a positive impact on embryo.

Abstract
Platelets are routinely stored at room temperature for 5-7 days before transfusion. Stored platelet quality is traditionally assessed by Kunicki's morphology score. This method requires extensive training, experience, and is highly subjective. Moreover, the number of laboratories familiar with this technique is decreasing. Cold storage of platelets has recently regained interest because of potential advantages such as reduced bacterial growth and preserved function. However, platelets exposed to cold temperatures change uniformly from a discoid to a spherical shape, reducing the morphology score outcomes to spheroid versus discoid during cooling. We developed a simpler, unbiased screening tool to measure temperature-induced platelet shape change using imaging flow cytometry. When reduced to two dimensions, spheres appear circular, while discs are detected on a spectrum from fusiform to circular. We defined circular events as having a transverse axis of >0.8 of the longitudinal axis and fusiform events ≤0.8 of the longitudinal axis. Using this assay, mouse and human platelets show a temperature and time-dependent, two-dimensional shape change from fusiform to circular, consistent with their three-dimensional change from discs to spheres. The method we describe here is a valuable tool for detecting shape change differences in response to agonists or temperature and will help screening for therapeutic measures to mitigate the cold-induced storage lesion.

Abstract
When platelet concentrates (PCs) were first introduced in the 1960s as a blood component therapy, they were stored in the cold. As platelet transfusion became more important for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, research into ways to increase supply intensified. During the late 1960s/early 1970s, it was demonstrated through radioactive labeling of platelets that room temperature platelets (RTP) had superior post-transfusion recovery and survival compared with cold-stored platelets (CSP). This led to a universal switch to room temperature storage, despite CSP demonstrating superior hemostatic effectiveness upon being transfused. There has been a global resurgence in studies into CSP over the last two decades, with an increase in the use of PC to treat acute bleeding within hospital and pre-hospital care. CSP demonstrate many benefits over RTP, including longer shelf life, decreased bacterial risk and easier logistics for transport, making PC accessible in areas where they have not previously been, such as the battlefield. In addition, CSP are reported to have greater hemostatic function than RTP and are thus potentially better for the treatment of bleeding. This review describes the history of CSP, the functional and metabolic assays used to assess the platelet storage lesion in PC and the current research, benefits and limitations of CSP. We also discuss whether the application of new technology for studying mitochondrial and glycolytic function in PC could provide enhanced understanding of platelet metabolism during storage and thus contribute to the continued improvements in the manufacturing and storage of PC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Flavor is a major contributor to consumer preference. Despite being effective at extending the fruit's commercial life, cold storage also results in a significant loss of flavor volatiles. To date, there has been few studies on the metabolic dynamics and the mechanism underlying the regulatory networks that modulate flavor loss during cold storage for fruit. METHODS The volatile contents were detected by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify structure genes and transcription factors (TFs). DNA methylation was analyzed by whole-genome methylation sequencing during cold storage. RESULTS We generated a temporal map, over hourly to weekly timescales, for the effects of chilling on flavor volatiles by combining metabolome, transcriptome, and DNA methylome in peach fruit. Based on the big data analysis, we developed a regulatory network for volatile formation and found that a decrease in volatiles during cold storage was significantly correlated with a decrease in the expression of synthesis genes. Moreover, TFs associated with these structure genes were identified. Expression of genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis was reduced while cold tolerance pathway was activated in response to low temperature. Functions of those genes were confirmed through transgenic experiments and across peach cultivars, suggesting our dataset is a useful tool for elucidating regulatory factors that have not yet been clarified in relation to flavor and cold tolerance. Genome wide DNA methylation was induced by chilling and peaked at 7 d followed by a decline during 28 d cold storage. Reduction of gene expression was accompanied by major changes in the methylation status of their promoters, including PpACS1, PpAAT1, PpTPS3 and PpMADS2. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the mechanism for chilling-induced flavor loss of peach fruit through time-course transcriptome and DNA methylome analysis.

Abstract
Inappropriate low temperature storage usually leads to quality deterioration of harvested tomato fruits. In this study, we performed comparative metabolome, transcriptome, and proteome analyses to comprehensively understand the effects of low temperature on metabolic changes in tomato fruit (fresh fruit, C0d; 4 °C 8 days, C8d; 4 °C 7 days and then 25 °C 1 day, C7dS1). Large amounts of secondary metabolites (including flavonoids and phenolic acids) increased after low temperature treatment. The overlap differentially accumulated metabolites in three comparative groups (C0d vs. C8d, C0d vs. C7dS1, C8d vs. C7dS1) were mainly flavonoid metabolites. A total of 1438 differentially expressed genes identified in these three comparative groups were primarily enriched in metabolic pathways and secondary metabolites biosynthesis pathways. Similarly, proteomic analysis showed that the differentially expressed proteins were enriched in the secondary metabolites biosynthesis and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways. There was a strong correlation between changes in flavonoid metabolites and the expression of chalcone synthase (SlCHS), chalcone isomerase-like (SlCHIL), and coumarate 3-hydroxylase (SlC3H), which are involved in the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis. Additionally, seven differentially expressed MYB transcription factors were identified; SlMYB91, SlMYB106, and SlMYB70 strongly correlated with flavonoid biosynthesis structural genes after low temperature treatment. Other genes involved in fruit ripening and quality were also affected by low temperature. The data generated in this study may unravel the transcriptional regulatory network of secondary metabolism associated with low-temperature storage and provide a solid foundation for future studies.

Abstract
Banana fruit is highly vulnerable to chilling injury (CI) during cold storage, which results in quality deterioration and commodity reduction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the membrane lipid metabolism mechanism underlying low temperature-induced CI in banana fruit. Chilling temperature significantly induced CI symptoms in banana fruit, compared to control temperature (22 °C). Using physiological experiments and transcriptomic analyses, we found that chilling temperature (7 °C) increased CI index, malondialdehyde content, and cell membrane permeability. Additionally, chilling temperature upregulated the genes encoding membrane lipid-degrading enzymes, such as lipoxygenase (LOX), phospholipase D (PLD), phospholipase C (PLC), phospholipase A (PLA), and lipase, but downregulated the genes encoding fatty acid desaturase (FAD). Moreover, chilling temperature raised the activities of LOX, PLD, PLC, PLA, and lipase, inhibited FAD activity, lowered contents of unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs) (γ-linolenic acid and linoleic acid), phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylinositol, but retained higher contents of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) (stearic acid and palmitic acid), free fatty acids, phosphatidic acid, lysophosphatidic acid, diacylglycerol, a lower USFAs index, and a lower ratio of USFAs to SFAs. Together, these results revealed that chilling temperature-induced chilling injury of bananas were caused by membrane integrity damage and were associated with the enzymatic and genetic manipulation of membrane lipid metabolism. These activities promoted the degradation of membrane phospholipids and USFAs in fresh bananas during cold storage.

Abstract
The effect of the UV-C treatment on the physico-chemical characteristics, pectin methylesterase activity (PME) as well as microbial quality of orange juice, compared to fresh juice, was studied. The juice samples were UV-C (254 nm) irradiated for different exposure times (15, 30, 45 and 60 min) and stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 30 days. UV-C treatment didn't significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affect pH values, titratable acidity, TSS (%), ascorbic acid content and PME activity in both fresh and stored samples. Increasing the exposure time from 5 to 60 min. showed no significant effect (p ≤ 0.05) on L* and a* values for both the fresh and the stored samples. On the contrary, negative relationship was observed between UV-C exposure time and b* values. Total bacterial counts were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced from 2.69 to 0.93 log10 CFU/mL when the exposure time was increased from 0 to 60 min. The UV-C treatment showed similar trend on yeast and mold counts but to a lesser extend due to their resistance to UV. The sensory characteristics, i.e. odour, colour, taste, consistency and overall acceptability didn't change (p ≤ 0.05) as a result of UV-C treatment at any tested exposure times.

Abstract
Microorganisms, lipids, and proteins always interact in a complex way in the fish matrix, which becomes a hindrance to evaluate the quality of the individual factors affecting them. In order to investigate the relationship between protein deterioration and volatile compounds (VOCs) in grouper during cold storage, the myofibril protein (MP) was used as a single-factor study to exclude microorganisms and lipids effects. The oxidation and degradation of MP during storage at 4 ℃ were evaluated, including MP content, total sulfhydryl content, carbonyl content, spatial structure and microstructure. Headspace-solid phase microextraction- gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was used to analyze the VOCs of grouper MP, and a total of 7 key VOCs were selected, including three ketones (2-nonanone, 2-undecanone and 2-tridecanone), three esters (methyl butyrate, methyl palmitate and methyl ester 9-octadecenoic acid) and one alcohol (3-methyl-1-butanol). At the same time, a non-targeted metabolomics method based on UPLC-Q-Extractive Orbitrap was used to investigate the changes in metabolites during MP storage. A total of 107 up-regulated differential metabolites and 7 down-regulated metabolites were annotated, and 6 metabolic pathways highly related to proteins were screened. Spearman correlation analysis showed that 7 key VOCs are associated with the biosynthesis and metabolism of ornithine and lysine. And a possible solution to protein deterioration in grouper was proposed, which provided a reference for improving protein quality and regulating flavor formation during cold storage of grouper at source.

Abstract
Foods containing probiotic bacilli spores are becoming more and more popular because of their resistance to acidic pH, low water activity, and, most importantly, heat processes. Even though spores may engage in some functions, such as immunomodulation, the majority of the beneficial characteristics are unique to vegetative cells. As matter of fact, the development of foods fortified with spores ought to even ensure the germination of the spores along the gastrointestinal tract. In this perspective, vegetative cells derived from spore germination were separately counted on a minimal medium because the traditional approach is based on the use of complex media that allows the spores to germinate independently by stimuli arising from processing or digestion. In more detail, three Bacillus spp. cultures with claimed probiotic properties were added to two entirely unrelated foods (pasta and croissants), and tolerance, as well as germination, was monitored before and after exposure to simulated GIT, as well as at the beginning and end of the products shelf life. For the first time, potential probiotic bacilli were included in a frozen ready-to-bake product. Germination appears to be prevented in this instance, and the impact of baking, matrix and cold storage on spores was examined independently. All of the parameters appeared to contribute, although further research is needed due to the unpredictable behavior exhibited by spores during freezing.

Abstract
Effect of packaging at different vacuum levels such as 7.2 Pa (99.99% vacuum), 30 kPa (70.39%), 70 kPa (30.91%), and 101.33 kPa (0%, atmospheric condition) using a specially designed airtight container on physicochemical and microbial properties of beef brisket cuts during cold storage was investigated. Dramatic pH increase was found only in air atmospheric packaging. Higher vacuum level yielded higher water holding capacity and lower volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and growth rate of aerobic bacteria and coliforms, whereas the fatty acid composition showed no difference among various vacuum levels. The highest vacuum level (7.2 Pa) yielded no increases in VBN, TBA, and coliform and the least increase in aerobe counts. For bacterial communities, higher vacuum levels yielded higher proportions of Leuconostoc, Carnobacterium, and lactobacilli belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and lower proportions of Pseudomonas belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria. Predictive curves for bacterial communities showed that just a little oxygen significantly affects the bacterial dominance based on different oxygen dependence of individual bacteria and their logarithmic changes by vacuum level.

Abstract
The recent emergence of new drug technologies such as messenger ribonucleic acid-based vaccines developed to fight the outbreak of the COVID-19 global pandemic has driven increased demand for delivery solutions capable of withstanding deep cold storage conditions down to -50°C, and even down to -80°C. Although significant data exist for deep cold storage in vials, little evidence is available for pre-filled syringes. Because pre-filled syringes serve as both the storage container and the delivery mechanism, there are additional risks to performance that must be evaluated, such as plunger gliding performance, syringe lubrication, silicone layer stability, and container closure integrity (CCI). In the present study, a comprehensive assessment of functional and physical performances of pre-filled syringes (PFS filled with water) was performed after one or multiple freeze/thaw (F/T) cycles between ambient temperature and various temperature cycles including -40°C, -50°C or -80°C for both 'staked needle' and 'luer lock' configurations. The experiments were guided by historical normative methods such as ISO 11040-4 and USP <1207> and combined with headspace gas analysis for barrel-stopper tightness testing. In addition, they were complemented with a novel approach, namely in situ real-time optical imagery, to track plunger stopper movement during the F/T cycle. The findings indicated that there is no significant impact on the functional performances from F/T down to -80°C, whereas no CCI risk was found after F/T down to -50°C.

Abstract
This investigation aims to elucidate the roles of lipids on the volatilome evolution of postmortem lamb and its possible modulated mechanism behind. Firstly, the physicochemical properties were evaluated as coordinating role of flavor quality, and results suggested that chilled storage improved tenderness of muscle tissue and induced color variation of lamb. According to multivariate results, the pattern shifts of volatile profile of chilled lamb could be differentiated successfully. Besides, the potential differential aroma-active compounds were identified, including up-regulated heptanol, 1-octen-3-ol, 6-methyl-2-heptanone, 3-heptanone, 2-pentyl furan and octanol in early stage of storage (days 0-3) and down-regulated hexanal, pentanal, hexanol, octanol, 6-methy-2-heptanone, heptanol, 1-octen-3-ol and benzaldehyde in later stage of storage (days 3-7). Then, discriminant analysis recognized the differential lipid species corresponding to different stages of lamb flavor development, involving phospholipids, sphingolipids, glycerolipids and fatty acyls. Herein, the degradation of acyl carnitine and diglyceride may be an important pathway that contributed to volatilome evolution of postmortem lamb in the early stage of storage. These results demonstrated a potential relationship between headspace volatilome and lipidome evolutions, providing a comprehensive understanding for development of lipid-derived volatile compounds of chilled lamb and useful for lamb characteristic flavor quality evaluation and control in future.

Abstract
Ferroptosis plays a pivotal role in regulating various physiological processes and quality of post-mortem muscle. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis remain unclear. The study investigated how ferroptosis was induced in beef during cold storage. Results showed that the expression of autophagy-related genes, LC3, ATG5, ATG7, and NCOA4 in beef during cold storage promoted the degradation of ferritin heavy chains. Ferritin evoked ferroptosis by releasing free iron, inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and inhibiting the glutathione (GSH)-glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) pathway. Furthermore, treatment of myoblasts with GSK 2656157 (autophagy inhibitor) showed that ferritin degradation was lower in the GSK 2656157-treated myoblasts than in the control, while GSH content and GPX4 activity were higher than the control (P < 0.05), and the contents of free iron, ROS and malondialdehyde, and apoptosis were lower than the control (P < 0.05). These results suggest that ferroptosis is induced by degradation of ferritin via the autophagic pathway.

Abstract
Odor deterioration of tilapia during cold storage is unavoidable and affects flavor and quality severely. Odor is characterized by the abundance of volatile compounds and metabolites. In this study, headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and metabolomic analysis were applied to explore the volatile compounds, differential metabolites, and metabolic pathways related to the odor deterioration of tilapia during cold storage. A total of 29 volatile compounds were detected to be associated with the odor deterioration of tilapia. And 485 differential metabolites were screened, of which 386 differential expressions were up-regulated and 99 differential expressions were down-regulated. Three major metabolic pathways including linoleic acid metabolism, alanine, aspartate, glutamate metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism were obtained. A potential metabolic network map was also proposed. This study contributes to revealing the metabolic mechanisms of odor deterioration in tilapia during cold storage and providing a theoretical reference for the regulation of flavor and quality.

Abstract
The effects of several ultrasonic treatments during cold storage at 4 °C on the quality of large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) were suggested. Large yellow croaker fillets were divided into six different groups for treatment. (a) CK (without any treatment), (b) A (single frequency 20 kHz), (c) B (single frequency 40 kHz), (d) C (left and right dual frequency 20 + 40 kHz), (e) D (orthogonal dual frequency: left and right 40 kHz, upper and lower 20 kHz), and (f) E (orthogonal dual frequency: left and right 20 kHz, upper and lower 20 kHz). The samples were divided into six groups, placed in sterile PE bags, and chilled to 4 °C. In order to determine the impact of ultrasonic treatment on the quality of large yellow croaker during cold storage, microbial indicators and physical and chemical indicators were measured every 3 days. The total number of colonies, the percentage of psychrophilic bacteria, the sample's pH, and its TVB-N value were all shown to grow at a much slower pace following ultrasonic treatment. In addition, the antibacterial effect of dual frequency ultrasound was gradually better than that of single frequency ultrasound. In conclusion, Group D has a pretty excellent impact on preserving overall sample quality.

Ethylene production is essential for improving cold resistance of postharvest tomatoes. However, the role of ethylene signaling pathway in maintaining fruit quality during long-term cold storage remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated that a partial loss of function in ethylene signaling by mutation of Ethylene Response Factor 2 (SlERF2), worsened fruit quality during cold storage, as determined by visual characterization, and physiological analyses of membrane damage and reactive oxygen species metabolism. In addition, the transcriptions of genes related to abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and signaling were also altered by SlERF2 gene in response to cold storage. Furthermore, mutation of SlERF2 gene compromised cold-induced expression of genes in the C-repeat/dehydration-responsive binding factor (CBF) signaling pathway. Therefore, it's concluded that an ethylene signaling component, SlERF2 contributed to the regulations of ABA biosynthesis and signaling, as well as CBF cold signaling pathway, ultimately affecting the fruit quality during long-term cold storage of tomatoes.

Abstract
Vacuum packaging is widely used for extending the shelf life of commercial fresh meat products. It also ensures product hygiene during distribution and storage. However, very little information exists concerning the effects of vacuum packaging on the shelf life of deer meat. One of our aims was to evaluate how storage under vacuum at 4 °C affects the microbial quality and safety of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) meat cuts. This was assessed in a longitudinal study based on sensory analyses and measurements of (1) mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB), (2) lactic acid bacteria (LAB), (3) enterobacteria (EB), (4) and Escherichia coli (EC) counts, and the presence of foodborne pathogens (Campylobacter, Salmonella, stx-harbouring E. coli (STEC), Yersinia and Listeria). Microbiomes were additionally investigated by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing at the time of spoilage. In total, 50 vacuum-packaged meat cuts from the carcasses of 10 wild white-tailed deer harvested in southern Finland in December 2018 were analysed. A significant (p < 0.001) drop in the odour and appearance scores and a significant increase in MAB (p < 0.001) and LAB (p = 0.001) counts of the vacuum-packaged meat cuts were observed after 3 weeks of storage at 4 °C. A very strong correlation (rs = 0.9444, p < 0.001) between the MAB and LAB counts were found during the 5-week sampling period. Clear spoilage changes, manifested as sour off-odours (odour scores ≤2) and pale colour, were detected in the meat cuts spoilt after 3-week storage. High (≥8 log10 cfu/g) MAB and LAB counts were also detected. According to the 16S rRNA gene amplicon analyses, Lactobacillus was the dominant bacterial genus in these samples, demonstrating that LAB can cause rapid spoilage of vacuum-packaged deer meat cuts stored at 4 °C. The rest of the samples were spoilt after four or five weeks of storage, and a vast number of bacterial genera were identified in them. Listeria and STEC were detected by PCR in 50 % and 18 % of the meat cut samples, respectively, which may indicate a public health problem. Our results demonstrate that it is very challenging to ensure the quality and safety of vacuum-packaged deer meat stored at 4 °C, and freezing is therefore recommended to prolong the shelf life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart transplantation is an effective treatment offering the best recovery in both quality and quantity of life in those affected by refractory, severe heart failure. However, transplantation is limited by donor organ availability. The reintroduction of heart donation after the circulatory determination of death (DCD) in 2014 offered an uplift in transplant activity by 30%. Thoraco-abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (taNRP) enables in-situ reperfusion of the DCD heart. The objective of this paper is to assess the clinical outcomes of DCD donor hearts recovered and transplanted from donors undergoing taNRP. METHOD This was a multicentre retrospective observational study. Outcomes included functional warm ischaemic time, use of mechanical support immediately following transplantation, perioperative and long-term actuarial survival and incidence of acute rejection requiring treatment. 157 taNRP DCD heart transplants, performed between February 2, 2015, and July 29, 2022, have been included from 15 major transplant centres worldwide including the UK, Spain, the USA and Belgium. 673 donations after the neurological determination of death (DBD) heart transplantations from the same centres were used as a comparison group for survival. FINDINGS taNRP resulted in a 23% increase in heart transplantation activity. Survival was similar in the taNRP group when compared to DBD. 30-day survival was 96.8% ([92.5%-98.6%] 95% CI, n = 156), 1-year survival was 93.2% ([87.7%-96.3%] 95% CI, n = 72) and 5-year survival was 84.3% ([69.6%-92.2%] 95% CI, n = 13). INTERPRETATION Our study suggests that taNRP provides a significant boost to heart transplantation activity. The survival rates of taNRP are comparable to those obtained for DBD transplantation in this study. The similar survival may in part be related to a short warm ischaemic time or through a possible selection bias of younger donors, this being an uncontrolled observational study. Therefore, our study suggests that taNRP offers an effective method of organ preservation and procurement. This early success of the technique warrants further investigation and use. Abstract
The antioxidant effect of betel leaf extract (BLE) on lipid and protein oxidation, microbial count and physicochemical attributes was investigated in meat sausages during refrigerated storage at 4 ± 1 °C. Buffalo meat sausages were developed after incorporating 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg kg-1 of BLE (BLE0, BLE1, BLE2 and BLE3) respectively. The sausages showed no changes in proximate composition due to BLE inclusion, but there was an improvement in microbial quality, color score, textural properties and lipid and protein oxidative stability. Further, higher sensory scores were observed for the BLE-incorporated samples. The images from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a reduction in surface roughness and unevenness showing microstructure modification in BLE treated sausages compared to the control sausages. Hence, to improve the storage stability and impede the rate of lipid oxidation in sausages, BLE incorporation proved to be an effective strategy.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the effects of cold ischemia on chronic steatosis and lipid signaling in vivo. Sprague Dawley (SD) rat models of chronic steatosis were established. Pathological observations and liver indices were assessed through hematoxylin-eosin (HE)- and Oil Red O staining. Autophagy and metabolism in adipose tissue were analyzed under post-ischemia and hypoxic conditions via western blotting and immunofluorescent analysis. We found that cold ischemia treatment exacerbated hepatic steatosis and reduced lipid phagocytosis. This manifested as a loss of Microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3) and Perilipin 2 (PLIN2), and lower levels of autophagy. Cold ischemia also inhibited lipophagy in transplanted rat livers, most notably in moderate-to-severe steatosis models. Ischemia and hypoxia inhibited lipid phagocytosis and increased lipid accumulation. Collectively, these data show that chronic steatosis aggravates cold storage induced acute ischemic injury in rat donor livers through the inhibition of lipophagy. Moderate-to-severe steatosis therefore influences the postoperative recovery of liver transplant recipients, which should be immediately transplanted to reduce the risk of cold ischemia.

Abstract
Pasteurized sports drinks and other fruit-based beverages are susceptible to deterioration due to thermal processing ineffectiveness to inactivate certain spoilage microorganisms, like Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris. This represents a major challenge for the beverage industry. The goals of this study were to: i) investigate the UV-C inactivation (annular thin film unit, actinometrical delivered fluence: 795-1270 mJ/cm2, 10-15 min, 20 °C, 1.8 L/h, Reh = 391-1067, recirculation mode operation) and the evolution during refrigerated storage of A. acidoterrestris ATCC 49025 spores and single or composite Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 in isotonic sports drinks (ISDs) made from orange (orange-ISD, UVT% = 81) or orange-banana-mango-kiwi-strawberry-lemon juices (multi-fruit-ISD, UVT% = 91), compared to a turbid orange-tangerine juice (OT juice, UVT% = 40); ii) assess the effect of pH, °Brix, A254nm, turbidity, colour and particle size of the ISDs and juice on microbial inactivation, iii) evaluate the evolution of native microbiota during cold storage, iv) investigate the Coroller, biphasic, Weibull, and Weibull-plus-tail models' ability to describe microbial inactivation and v) measure 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) formation. The modified biodosimetry method was used to calculate the germicidal UV-C fluences. Heat pasteurization (T-coil, 80 °C/6 min) was evaluated as the control treatment. UV-C was highly effective at inactivating E. coli as 4.1-5.1 and 4.5-5.6 log reductions were determined in the multi-fruit-ISD and orange-ISD, respectively, barely impacted by the background microbiota. No significant differences were recorded for the inactivation of E. coli in the UV-C and T-coil systems. Whereas, a significantly higher inactivation of A. acidoterrestris spores was achieved by UV-C (3.7-4.0 log reductions), compared to the negligible one achieved by the thermal treatment. Even though E. coli inactivation curves were similar in shape, UV-C was less effective when a cocktail of other E. coli strains was present. In comparison to the OT juice, the ISDs' inactivation kinetics were markedly different in shape, with a rapid decrease in population during the first minutes of treatment. The germicidal fluence (Hd biod) corresponding to A. acidoterrestris (19.1 mJ/cm2) was selected as it was higher than the one obtained for E. coli (11.0 mJ/cm2). UV-C induced 2.8- or 1.3 and 2.3- or 0.8 log-reductions of total aerobes or moulds and yeasts in the multi-fruit-ISD and orange-ISD, respectively. Compared to the other models, the Coroller and biphasic models showed a better fit and more accurate parameter estimates. UV-C-induced HMF production was not significant in the ISDs. The current study found that the UV-C treatment was more effective than typical heat pasteurization for inactivating A. acidoterrestris spores in isotonic drinks, following a similar trend for E. coli and native microbiota.

Abstract
This work studied the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) with frequencies between 100 and 400 Hz and a fixed strength of 12 mT on cold storage of grass carp at 4 °C for 30 min, and Ca2+ATPase enzyme activities, and lipid and protein oxidations in samples were measured to assess changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and oxidative stability. Results showed higher Ca2+ATPase activities in samples treated with EMF frequencies. Significant (p < 0.05) decreases occurred in protein oxidation for samples treated between 100 and 300 Hz, but an increase was observed for treatment with 400 Hz. However, the lipid oxidation increased for samples treated up to 200 Hz and decreased with further increase in frequency to 300 and 400 Hz. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis showed that exposure to different frequencies of EMF could reduce the association of water molecules with protein for both bound and immobilized water. Overall, treatments of EMF between 100 and 400 Hz could improve grass carp quality during cold storage.

Abstract
Oximes play an essential role in the therapy of organophosphorus compound (OP) poisoning by reactivating inhibited acetylcholinesterase. Impairment of liver function was observed in OP poisoning and associated with obidoxime treatment by some reports. In this study human three-dimensional HepaRG spheroids were used as complex in vitro model to investigate oxime-induced liver toxicity. In this context, cold storage of liver spheroids at 4 °C in standard culture medium and in optimized tissue preservation solutions of up to 72 h was assessed. Cold storage in standard culture medium resulted in a complete loss of viability whereas an optimized tissue preservation solution preserved viability. Separately from that liver spheroids were exposed to the four oximes pralidoxime, obidoxime, HI-6, MMB-4 and cytotoxicity (effective concentration, EC50) was determined with an ATP-based assay at several time points. The release of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and albumin secretion was measured in supernatants. The same parameters were assessed with diclofenac as positive hepatotoxic control and with the OP pesticides malathion and malaoxon alone or in the presence of obidoxime. All individual tested oximes and OP showed a low cytotoxicity with effective concentrations mostly >2,000 μM. In contrast, the exposure to malaoxon in the presence of 1,000 μM obidoxime resulted in a marked decrease of viability and an increased release of AST indicating risk of liver injury only if oxime antidotes are strongly overdosed.

Abstract
Adalia decempunctata (L.) is a common predator in agro ecosystems. Here, the effects of low-temperature storage on biological parameters, energy reserves, and antioxidant enzymes were investigated. Eggs, larvae, and pupae of this predator were maintained for 1-4 weeks and adults for different days (20, 35, 50, and 65 d) at 4, 7, and 10 °C in darkness and 70 ± 5% R.H. After storage of 20 days, the survival rate in male and female insects was >90% in 4, 7, and 10 ± 1 °C. In 65 days, the highest survival rate for adult insects was recorded at 4 °C. Effect of cold storage on the performance of adult's A. decempunctata was not statistically different for periods up to 35 days, but decreased longer duration (65 days). The female adults were able to tolerate the cold storage period by producing higher amounts of glucose and antioxidant enzymes, thus displaying a high survival rate. Based on our results, maintaining A. decempunctata adults at low temperatures (i.e. 4, 7, and 10 °C) for 20 or 35 days performed best without loss of quality.

Abstract
Domestic refrigerator is a widely used appliance to keep food fresh and retard food spoilage in household. However, our understanding of microbial health risk associated with food under such circumstance still remains very poor. Here, typical types of food (vegetable, fish, and pork) were kept in a domestic refrigerator at 4 °C for 3-30 days. Temporal dynamics of antibiotic resistome, pathogens, bacterial and fungal communities during this period were investigated via high-throughput quantification and Illumina sequencing technologies. Results showed that a large number (21-134) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected across the three food types, including 10.06 % of high-risk ARGs classified by their risk ranks. Moreover, four bacterial pathogens (i.e., Bacillus cereus, Cronobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus) targeted by marker genes including the pathogen-specific genes or virulence factor genes, and some potential fungal pathogens (e.g., Fusarium, Candida, and Aspergillus) were detected, indicating the occurrence of microbial risk even at the normally regarded safe storage temperature. Among all food types, the total bacterial density and ARG abundances in fish rapidly increased after only 3 days, much faster than vegetable and pork after 10 days. In addition, fish samples contained the highest ARG and pathogen abundances, indicating its potentially higher health risk than other food types. Finally, the shifts of ARG pattern were mainly contributed by bacterial communities and MGEs. This study highlights that food preserved in refrigerator at 4 °C could still be an unneglected microbial risk, and raises awareness of improving food safety in domestic environment.

Abstract
The development of compostable packages that maintain fresh meat quality, is an important achievement for the poultry industry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using a starch-based composite foam (SCF) in the packaging of fresh chicken meat during refrigerated storage. SCF was prepared using extrusion process. Nisin (2%) was added as antimicrobial agent (SCFN). Commercial expanded polystyrene (EPS) was used as control. Physical characterization, antimicrobial analysis and storage of fresh chicken meat were carried out. No differences were observed in SEM images between SFC and SCFN samples. Water uptake of SCF were higher than SCFN (p < 0.05). SCFN exhibited higher Young´s modulus and flexural strength (p < 0.05), and antimicrobial effect against foodborne pathogens. During the storage of chicken meat, the starch-based composite foam showed a higher capacity to retain liquid than EPS. The color of chicken meat had slight variations at day 4 compared with the raw meat. Nisin did not retard lipid oxidation of chicken meat, however, the aerobic plate count was lower. Therefore, the starch-based composite foam is suitable for fresh meat storage, being improved with the incorporation of nisin as antimicrobial agent. Abstract
The present study evaluated the potential of nanochitosan coating enriched with ethanol-water extract of the walnut green husk (WGHE) on spoilage and rancidity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during six-day refrigerated storage. Hence, we have considered fresh trout fillets without any treatment as control (C), immersed in 2% solution of chitosan nanoparticles (CN), combination with 1.5% and 3% WGHE with nanochitosan coating (CN + WGHE 1.5 and CN + WGHE3), for physicochemical, microbial and sensorial assays. The highest levels and total volatile nitrogen were observed after day 6 in C, while the lowest was found in CN + WGHE3 groups. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and peroxide value of untreated fillets on day 6 of the study were significantly higher than NC + WGHE3 with 0.08 mg/g and 3.27 mEq/kg, respectively. The total microbial population was: C ˃ CN ˃ CN + WGHE 1.5 > CN + WGHE3, which expresses the effect of the extract on the total microbial population. Overall, the combination of WGHE with CN increased the extract's efficiency in reducing peroxide value, TBARS, and total volatile nitrogen and delayed the pH increase, improving the overall acceptability of rainbow trout fillets stored in refrigerated conditions.

Abstract
The surface wax of fruit has a significant effect on abiotic stress and fruit quality. In this study, the composition of the waxes found on fruit surfaces and the related gene expression of three different pear cultivars (Xuehua, Yali, and Yuluxiang) were investigated during cold storage. The results showed that 35 wax compositions were found on the surfaces of the three pear cultivars, mainly including C29 alkane, three fatty acids, two esters, three aldehydes, three fatty alcohols, and three triterpenoids. The largest amount of C29 alkane, three fatty acids and two esters were found in Yuluxiang (YLX) on day 90, while aldehydes with carbons of C30 and C32 were the highest in Yali (YL). Xuehua (XH) showed the largest amount of C22 fatty alcohol on day 180 compared to YLX and YL. Larger amounts of triterpenoids were found in XH and YL when compared to YLX. The expression levels of fifteen wax related genes (LACS1, KCS2, KCS6, FDH, KCS20, GL8, CER10, CER60, LTPG1, LTP4, ABCG12, CER1L, CAC3, CAC3L, and DGAT1L) reached their peak at day 45 in YLX, compared to XH and YL, their expression levels in YLX were higher to different degrees. These results suggest that the different expression patterns of wax-related genes may be closely related to the difference in wax compositions of the surface wax of three pear cultivars.

Abstract
Ooencyrtus pityocampae and Ooencyrtus kuvanae are egg parasitoids that are considered potential candidates for the control of different pest species through inundative release. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of different cold-storage periods of Philosamia ricini eggs (host) on the rearing parameters of O. pityocampae and O. kuvanae. Host eggs were stored at 3 °C, and a factorial experiment involving two parasitoid species, nine host storage periods (1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days) and a control, and two host ages (1 and 2 days) was conducted, with 10 replications including 40-P. ricini eggs each. Adult emergence, development time, longevity, and fecundity were investigated. The parasitoid adult emergence percentage significantly varied with storage duration. These values were lower in O. kuvanae than in O. pityocampae. The development time of O. kuvanae progeny increased in both host age groups except in the 1-day storage period subgroup. However, the development times of the progeny of O. pityocampae reared on one-day-old eggs stored for 5, 10, 60, and 75 days were increased, and the development times of the progeny of O. pityocampae reared on 2-day-old eggs stored for 45 and 90 days were increased. The longevity of the F1 progeny of O. kuvanae was negatively affected by storage time. There was no difference in the longevity of the F1 progeny of O. pityocampae compared to that of the control. Additionally, the fecundities of the F1 progeny of O. pityocampae and O. kuvanae were 54.7 and 47.0 offspring/female, respectively. These results provide useful information for guiding the development of mass rearing methodologies for both parasitoid species.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated considerable interest in the resilience of the U.S. food system. Less attention has been paid to the resiliency characteristics of the final link in the food system - individual households. We use national survey data from July 2020 to understand the food acquisition, preparation, and management strategies that households implemented in response to the pandemic. We find a substantial increase in the amount of food prepared and consumed at home which scales with respondents' time availability, perceived risks of dining out, and pandemic-induced income disruption. We then identify several household responses to support this increase in home food consumption that are in line with practices suggested to enhance resiliency at other links in the food supply chain, including increased cold storage capacity and enhanced in-house capability via improved cooking and food management skills. We discuss how responses such as improved food skills can reduce the propagation of shocks through the supply chain by allowing greater flexibility and less waste, while actions such as increased home cold storage capacity could undermine system resilience by exacerbating bullwhip effects, i.e., amplifying consumer demand shocks that are propagated to upstream food supply chain actors.

Abstract
Strawberry is very perishable fruit with rapid postharvest loss of quality and high susceptibility to microbial infections. In this work we study pectin modifications and microbiota and mycobiota composition in strawberry in conventional and organic cultivation systems. The enzymatic activity during postharvest storage of both types of strawberry was divided at the fifth day of storage into two phases: postharvest changes and rotting. Pectin molecules extracted from organic strawberries were longer and more branched compared to the conventional strawberries; however a more noticeable reorganization of molecular structure occurred. The sequential action of the pectinolytic enzymes had a direct effect on the molecular structure of pectin fractions. The observed changes in pectin structure relate to the synergistic activity of pectinolytic enzymes and some microorganisms. The organic system was characterized by a greater number and variety of bacteria and fungi during storage as compared to the conventional system.

Abstract
There is no detailed study on the effects of different ozone doses, in comparison with fungicide, on the quality losses of pomegranates during cold storage. In the present study, the use of ozone as an alternative to fungicide during cold storage of pomegranate was investigated. Pomegranates were exposed to 1, 2 and 3 ppm gaseous ozone for 3 h and dipped into Prochloraz solution (0.9%) for 10 s. Control samples were only treated with air at the same condition. The fruit were packaged in modified atmosphere bags and stored at 6 ºC and 90 ± 5% relative humidity for 4 months. All ozone doses and fungicide treatment suppressed respiration rate and retarded acidity loss in pomegranates. Fungicide and 1 ppm ozone treatments maintained vivid red color of pomegranates during storage. The 1 ppm ozone was the best treatment for decreasing decay rate of fruit, while high doses had a negative effect. Ozone exposure (1 ppm for 3 h) in air can be an alternative to fungicide during cold storage of pomegranate.

Abstract
Melatonin treatment ameliorated chilling injury in cold-stored guava fruit. Melatonin treatment reduced cell membrane permeability and weight loss in guava fruit. Melatonin treatment retained higher TSS, total sugar, sucrose and vitamin C in guava. The optimal concentration of melatonin for postharvest guava fruit was 100 μmol/L. Melatonin displayed a great potential application for postharvest guava fruit.
The influence of melatonin treatment on the quality and chilling injury of guavas during storage at 4 ± 1 °C were evaluated. Compared with control group, fruit of guava cv. Xiguahong exposed to various concentrations (50, 100, 150, and 200 μmol/L) of melatonin showed a significantly lower fruit respiration rate, weight loss, cell membrane permeability, and chilling injury index, but a higher commercially acceptable fruit rate, higher peel L*, h° value, and chlorophyll content. Melatonin treatment also delayed the decreases of fruit firmness, sucrose, total soluble sugar, vitamin C, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids. These data indicate that melatonin treatment could increase chilling tolerance and retain quality of cold-stored guavas. Among various concentrations of melatonin treatment, 100 μmol/L melatonin-treated guavas showed the preferable quality properties and lowest chilling injury index. Thus, melatonin may be a novel method of postharvest handling to enhance cold resistance and extend storage-life of cold-stored guava fruit.

Abstract
Changes in protein profiles were investigated in pike eel during cold storage. Cold storage decreased the springiness and MP content in muscle tissues. 137 and 148 DAPs were identified in the CPE and FPE compared with the PE samples. Membrane and cytoskeletal proteins were vulnerable to damage during storage. Proteomics revealed significant protein alterations in fresh and stored fish comparisons.
Chemical- and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) based proteomics strategies were executed to investigate the alterations of protein profiles in pike eel (Muraenesox cinereus) muscle during chilling (CPE) and frozen (FPE) storage. Chemical results indicated that springiness and myofibrillar protein (MP) content of muscle tissues decreased significantly during 6 days of chilled and 120 days of frozen storage. LC–MS-based proteomics analysis suggested that great alterations occurred in muscle proteins mainly induced by cold stress. The differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) with low abundances in CPE and FPE samples included the annexins, fibronectin, ribosomal proteins, T-complex proteins, tubulin beta chain, and histones, which were mostly associated with the membrane structural constituents, cytoskeleton, and binding functional proteins. Results of eukaryotic cluster of orthologous group (KOG) verified that these identified DAPs were mainly converged in the cytoskeleton function resulting from cold conditions, which in turn affected the physical structure and chemical performances of muscle tissues.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adrenoceptor and endothelin (ET) receptor-mediated vasoconstriction as well as endothelium-dependent vasodilation of human saphenous veins were compared before and after 20 h of cold storage. METHODS Contractile responses to potassium chloride (KCl), norepinephrine (NE), and ET-1 as well as vasodilator responses to acetylcholine (ACh) were evaluated. RESULTS Storage in HEPES-supplemented Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (HDMEM) diminished KCl induced contractile forces to 71% (p = 0.002) and NE induced contractions to 80% (p = 0.037), in contrast to HEPES-supplemented Krebs-Henseleit solution (HKH) and TiProtec solution. KCl-normalized NE contractions were not affected by storage. NE EC50 values were slightly lower (7.1E-8 vs. 7.5E-8, p = 0.019) after storage in HKH, with no changes after storage in the other solutions. Endothelium-dependent responses to ACh were not affected by storage. ET-1 induced contractions were attenuated after storage in HDMEM (77%, p = 0.002), HKH (75%, p = 0.020), and TiProtec (73%, p = 0.010) with no changes in normalized constrictions. ET-1 EC50 values were not affected by storage. CONCLUSION Loss of contractility after storage in HDMEM may reflect the lower content of dextrose. There was no specific attenuation of adrenoceptor, ET-receptor, or ACh receptor mediated signal transduction after storage in any of the media. HKH or TiProtec are equally suitable cold storage solutions for ex vivo measurements.

Abstract
When the recipient of the product is relatively distant from the production area, it is necessary to use cold storage and controlled humidity to transport the avocado fruits. One of the main advantages of local avocado consumption lies on the possibility of prolonging on-tree maturation; this could foreseeably modify the metabolic profile of the fruit that reaches the consumer. In this work, the effect of prolonged on tree maturation (during different time intervals) on the final composition of avocado fruit (at edible ripeness) was evaluated and compared with the impact of the same periods after prolonged cold storage. The quantitative evolution of nine bioactive metabolites (7 phenolic compounds, pantothenic and abscisic acids) over 40 days (10-days intervals) was studied by using a solid-liquid extraction protocol and a LC-MS methodology. The results were discussed both considering the quantitative evolution of each individual compound and the sum of all of them.

Abstract
Transplantation is the method of choice and, in many cases, the only method of treatment for patients with end-stage organ disease. Excellent results have been achieved, and the main focus today is to extend the number of available donors. The use of extended-criteria donors or donors after circulatory death is standard, but is accompanied by an increased risk of ischemia reperfusion injury. This review presents newly developed machine perfusion techniques using hypothermic, subnormothermic, or normothermic conditions, with or without oxygenation. Possibilities for treatment and quality assessment in decision-making about organ acceptability are also discussed.

Abstract
Cold-chain cooked rice is an instant food consumed worldwide. Through inspecting rice structural alterations during digestion, this work discloses how microwave reheating tailors the starch digestibility of cooked rice following cold storage. The cold storage allowed approximately 2% of B-type (not V-type) starch crystallites, more nanoscale and short-range orders, and smaller pores in the rice matrix. These changes retarded the hydrolysis of structural domains (e.g., amorphous regions and short-range orders) during digestion, which increased the content of slowly digestible starch to about 38.16%. Then, microwave reheating partially disrupted the B-type crystallites and nanoscale orders, but unaffected the contents of V-type crystallites and short-range orders. Even with such structural disruptions, the resistant starch content was apparently increased to approximately 30.06%, as the structural domains became less susceptible to the digestion. Additionally, for the rice samples, the percentage of V-type crystallites could be largely increased from ca. 3% to 13%-14% during digestion.

Abstract
Fresh fruits, especially strawberries, are usually consumed raw without any step to ensure their food safety. Salmonella enterica is one of the most important etiologic agents for foodborne diseases throughout the world and its ability to respond to some stress responses makes it even more dangerous. In the present investigation, we study the survival of S. Enteritidis (CECT-4300) on strawberries after 2-min of various disinfection steps (NaClO (200 ppm), peracetic acid (PAA; 40 ppm), water-assisted UV-C (WUV-C), and the combination WUV-C and 40 ppm of PAA (WUV-C + PAA)) and after 5 days of cold storage (4 °C). Moreover, the pathogenic potential of the surviving bacteria, such as the ability to survive throughout the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and subsequently the capability to adhere to and invade Caco-2 cells, was tested at each sampling point. After 2-min of washing procedures, reductions of S. Enteritidis on strawberries were ≥1.2 log, with no significant differences among treatments. However, the use of WUV-C + PAA treatment achieved the highest reductions in washing water, in which S. Enteritidis was not detected (<DL). At the end of 5-day storage period, reductions of the WUV-C + PAA treated-samples were lower in comparison with PAA-treated samples (P < 0.05). The effect of the treatments used did not interfere with the survival of S. Enteritidis along the GI tract. After disinfection and subsequent GI simulation, all remaining populations demonstrated an elevated ability to adhere in Caco-2 cells (67.5-81.1%) compared with those obtained on untreated strawberries (61.4%). Concerning the ability of invasion, no significant differences could be observed. Remarkably, after 5 days at 4 °C, the adherence of S. Entertidis significantly decreased in the samples with the combined treatment meanwhile the invasion ability was not detected for any treatment. The results of the present study are essential for the quantitative microbial risk estimations.

Abstract
The combined effects of ultrasound and the antioxidants of bamboo leaves (AOB) on the quality maintenance of the adductor muscle of scallops (AMSs) during cold storage was investigated. Ultrasound power at 350 W coupled with AOB solution (2% w/v) (UAOB-350) was applied to treat the AMSs according to Taylor diagram analysis. The microstructure, oxidative changes (lipid and protein oxidation), total numbers of colonies, total volatile basic nitrogen, and texture of the AMSs during 6 days of cold storage were analysed. The results indicated that UAOB-350 treatment could effectively retard protein and lipid oxidation and bacterial growth and maintain better microstructure and texture characteristics than AOB solution treatment alone, prolonging the shelf life of the AMSs by 2 days during storage at 4 °C. These results indicate that the UAOB-350 combination method has promising potential to maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of AMSs during cold storage.
