Abstract
The intensive agriculture practices improved the crop productivity but escalated energy inputs (EI) and carbon foot print (CF) which contributes to global warming. Hence designing productive, profitable crop management practices under different production systems with low environmental impact (EI and CF) is the need of the hour. To identify the practices, quantification of baseline emissions and the major sources of emissions are required. Indian agriculture has diversified crops and production systems but there is dearth of information on both EI and CF of these production systems and crops. Hence the present study was an attempt to find hot spots and identify suitable strategies with high productivity, energy use efficiency (EUE) and carbon use efficiency (CUE). Energy and carbon balance of castor, cotton, chickpea, groundnut, maize, rice (both rainfed and irrigated), wheat, sugarcane (only irrigated), pigeon pea, soybean, sorghum, pearl millet (only rainfed) in different production systems was assessed. Field specific data on different crop management practices as well as grain and biomass yields were considered. Rainfed production systems had lower EI and CF than irrigated system. The nonrenewable sources of energy like fertilizer (64 %), irrigation (78 %), diesel fuel (75 %) and electricity (67 %) are the major source of energy input. Rainfed crops recorded higher CUE over irrigated condition. Adoption of technologies like efficient irrigation strategies (micro irrigation), enhancing fertilizer use efficiency (site specific nutrient management or slow release fertilizer), conservation agriculture (conservation or reduced tillage) rice cultivation methods (SRI or Direct seeded rice) were the mitigation strategies. These results will help policy makers and stake holders in adoption of suitable strategies for sustainable intensification.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The number and proportion of individuals aged 60 and over are increasing globally. The increase in the elderly population has important social and economic effects. Telomere length is an important marker for healthy aging. Here, we review the relevance between telomere length and energy balance by determining the effects of physical activity, nutrients, dietary patterns, and foods on healthy aging and telomere length with related studies. RECENT FINDINGS Evidence emphasizes the importance of telomere length and integrity for healthy aging. It also focuses on the importance of potential interventions such as physical activity and a healthy diet to improve this process. We suggest that ensuring energy balance with regular physical activity and healthy diets can contribute to the aging process by protecting telomere length. In addition, different methods in studies, short and inconsistent durations, different types of exercise, different diet patterns, and non-standard foods have led to conflicting results. More studies are needed to elucidate molecular-based mechanisms.

Abstract
The search for new methods in the toxicology field has increased the use of early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a versatile organism model. Here, we use early stages of zebrafish to evaluate glyphosate as pure active ingredient and within a commercial formulation in terms of oxidative stress. Biomarkers involved in the oxidative status were evaluated along with other markers of neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, energy balance and motor performance, and the selected tools were evaluated by its sensitivity in determining early-warning events. Zebrafish embryos exposed to glyphosate active ingredient and glyphosate-based formulation were under oxidative stress, but only the commercial formulation delayed the embryogenesis, affected the cholinergic neurotransmission and induced DNA damage. Both altered the motor performance of larvae at very low concentrations, becoming larvae hypoactive. The energy balance was also impaired, as embryos under oxidative stress had lower lipids reserves. Although data suggest that glyphosate-based formulation has higher toxicity than the active ingredient itself, the most sensitive biomarkers detected early-warning effects at very low concentrations of the active ingredient. Biochemical biomarkers of defense system and oxidative damage were the most sensitive tools, detecting pro-oxidant responses at very low concentrations, along with markers of motor performance that showed high sensitivity and high throughput, suitable for detecting early effects linked to neurotoxicity. Alterations on morphology during embryogenesis showed the lowest sensitivity, thus morphological alterations appeared after several alterations at biochemical levels. Tools evaluating DNA damage and cell proliferation showed mid-sensitivity, but low throughput, thus they could be used as complementary markers.

Abstract
Nervous system has distinct anisotropy and some intrinsic biophysical properties enable neurons present various firing modes in neural activities. In presence of realistic electromagnetic fields, non-uniform radiation activates these neurons with energy diversity. By using a feasible model, energy function is obtained to predict the growth of synaptic connections of these neurons. Distribution of average value of the Hamilton energy function vs. intensity of noisy disturbance can predict the occurrence of coherence resonance, which the neural activities show high regularity by applying noisy disturbance with moderate intensity. From physical viewpoint, the average energy value has similar role average power for the neuron. Non-uniform spatial disturbance is applied and energy is injected into the neural network, statistical synchronization factor is calculated to predict the network synchronization stability and wave propagation. The intensity for field coupling is adaptively controlled by energy diversity between adjacent neurons. Local energy balance will terminate further growth of the coupling intensity; otherwise, heterogeneity is formed in the network due to energy diversity. Furthermore, memristive channel current is introduced into the neuron model for perceiving the effect of electromagnetic induction and radiation, and a memristive neuron is obtained. The circuit implement of memristive circuit depends on the connection to a magnetic flux-controlled memristor into the mentioned neural circuit in an additive branch circuit. The connection and activation of this memristive neural network are controlled under external spatial electromagnetic radiation by capturing enough field energy. Continuous energy collection and exchange generate energy diversity and synaptic connection is created to regulate the synchronous firing patterns and energy balance.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to gain insights into the synergistic advantage of anaerobic co-fermentation of heat-treated sludge (HS) with food waste (FW) and heat-treated food waste (HFW) for hydrogen production. The results showed that, compared with raw sludge (RS) mixed with FW (RS-FW), the co-substrate of HS mixed with either FW (HS-FW) or HFW (HS-HFW) effectively promoted hydrogen production, with HS-HFW promoted more than HS-FW. The maximum specific hydrogen production (MSHP) and the maximum hydrogen concentration (MHC) of HS-HFW were 40.53 mL H2/g dry weight and 57.22%, respectively, and 1.21- and 1.45-fold as high as those from HS-FW. The corresponding fermentation was ethanol type for HS-HFW and butyric acid type for HS-FW. The net energy production from RS-FW and HS-FW was both negative, but it was positive (2.57 MJ) from 40% HFW addition to HS-HFW. Anaerobic fermentation was more viable for HS-HFW.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is unknown whether predetermined (un)interrupted sitting within a laboratory setting will induce compensatory changes in human behaviours (energy intake and physical activity) once people return to a free-living environment. The effects of breaking up prolonged sitting on cognition are also unclear. METHODS Twenty-four (male = 13) healthy participants [age 31 ± 8 y, BMI 22.7 ± 2.3 kg/m2 (mean ± SD)] completed 320 min mixed-feeding trials under prolonged sitting (SIT) or with 2 min walking at 6.4 km/h every 20 min (ACTIVE), in a randomised crossover design. Human behaviours were recorded post-trial under free-living conditions until midnight. Cognitive performance was evaluated before and immediately after SIT and ACTIVE trials. Self-perceived sensations (appetite, energy and mood) and finger prick blood glucose levels were collected at regular intervals throughout the trials. RESULTS There were no differences between trials in eating behaviour and spontaneous physical activity (both, p > 0.05) in free-living conditions, resulting in greater overall total step counts [11,680 (10740,12620) versus 6049 (4845,7253) steps] and physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) over 24-h period in ACTIVE compared to SIT (all, p < 0.05). Greater self-perceived levels of energy and lower blood glucose iAUC were found in ACTIVE trial compared to SIT trial (both, p < 0.05). No differences were found in cognitive performance between trials (all, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Breaking up sitting does not elicit subsequent behavioural compensation, resulting in greater 24-h step counts and PAEE in healthy adults. Breaking up sitting reduces postprandial glucose concentrations and elicits greater self-perceived energy levels, but these positive effects do not acutely translate into improved cognitive function.

Abstract
Under fueling, disordered eating (DE), exercise dependence (EXD), and high training demands relative to energy intake may increase the risk of low energy availability (LEA) in endurance and ultra-endurance athletes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of LEA risk and relationship with risk of DE, EXD, and fueling habits during training and competition in endurance runners. Trail runners between the age of 18-40 (n = 1,899; males: n = 510, females: n = 1,445) completed a 45-question survey using Qualtrics that included training and racing characteristics, questions regarding carbohydrate intake during training and competition, the Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire (LEAF-Q), the Disordered Eating Screen for Athletes (DESA-6), and the Exercise Dependence Scale-21 (EDS-21). Among all runners, 43% of runners were at risk for LEA, 43% were at risk for DE, and 87.3% reported symptoms related to EXD. LEAF-Q scores were positively correlated with EDS-21 (r = 0.33, p < 0.001) and DESA-6 scores (r = 0.29, p < 0.001). From the population, 47.6% of athletes reported taking in less than the recommended carbohydrate guidelines during endurance events lasting > 2.5 hours. In females, athletes at risk for LEA appear less likely to fuel sufficiently than athletes not at risk for LEA (p < 0.001). Risk of LEA, DE, and EXD appears to be high in endurance runners. Furthermore, meeting carbohydrate recommendations during training and competition should be emphasized to avoid negative health outcomes associated with LEA in endurance runners.

Abstract
The improvement of organic sludge destruction efficiency and methanogenic performance is a key concern during anaerobic digestion toward maximum energy recovery. In this study, a high-solid anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was operated continuously for the treatment of organic sludge from Japanese small-scale collective wastewater treatment facility (Johkasou), and digestion efficiency was enhanced by the optimizing solid retention time (SRT). Degradation efficiency of the substrate improved from 36 % to 52 % and the biogas yield was enhanced from 0.37 to 0.51 L/g-VSfed when the SRT was extended from 30 to 60 d. The net energy yield of AnMBR at SRT 60 days was 9.83 kJ/g-VSfed, and the corresponding energy sufficiency ratio was 181 %, indicating that SRT extension could enhance substrate destruction with significant energy recovery potential. However, a long SRT is characterized by high mixed liquor total solids (MLTS), small particle size, high extracellular polymeric substances content, and poor filterability, which exert detrimental effects on membrane operation. Membrane fouling was effectively controlled by regulating the flux at a sustainable rate. The low fouling region and transition region of operating flux were determined as 0.21-4.6 L/m2/h (LMH) and 1.5-5.7 LMH, respectively, when MLTS was 25-50 g/L, and the main contributors to membrane fouling were high protein fractions and small sludge flocs. The current study proposes a promising method to promote digestion efficiency and provided adequate guidance for membrane operation at super-high MLTS by presenting practical engineering applications of AnMBRs in solid waste treatment.

Abstract
Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important process in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) aiming to reduce urban drainage, to promote cooling and/or to contribute to an urban hydrological balance restoration closer to the natural one. However, on these structures and particularly on green roofs (GR), its evaluation remains challenging and subject to discussion. Estimates of ET by water balance, energy balance, and an ET chamber were performed on five different plots of a full-scale experimental green roof in Trappes (France). Compared to both water balance (90th percentile range of daily ET values: 0.8 mm/d to 3 mm/d) and chamber methods (90th percentile range of daily ET values: 1 mm/d to 1.5 mm/d), the energy balance (90th percentile range of daily ET values is between 1.8 mm and 3.7 mm) produces higher values, 1 to 2 times higher in cumulative values during common periods. The chamber ET displays a similar trend to the energy balance on an hourly basis, and its values remain within the same range as the water balance evaluations on a daily time-step. All three assessments consistently fell below the potential ET values estimated with the Penman-Monteith formula. Critical issues in ET estimation through experimentation have arisen. Sensible heat flux (H) significantly increases ET values when using the energy balance approach compared to the other two methods. The Water Balance method is practical, but on days following rainfall events, the Chamber method may prove more reliable, albeit more time and labour-intensive. The three methods indicated that the substrate thickness was the main contributing factor to increase ET, with well-maintained herbaceous plants providing higher ET values than sedums in thick (15 cm) substrates. In addition, the substrate's nature, especially its organic content, is another factor that promotes ET in green roofs.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion in wastewater treatment plants converts its unwanted end product - waste activated sludge into biogas. Even if the process is well established, pre-treatment of the sludge can further improve its efficiency. In this study, four treatment regimes for increasing methane production through prior sludge disintegration were investigated using lab-scale cavitation generator and real sludge samples. Three different cavitating (attached cavitation regime, developed cloud shedding cavitation regime and cavitation in a wake regime) and one non-cavitating regime at elevated static pressure were studied in detail for their effectiveness on physical and chemical properties of sludge samples. Volume-weighted mean diameter D[4,3] of sludge's particles decreased by up to 92%, specific surface area increased by up to 611%, while viscosity (at a shear rate of 3.0 s-1) increased by up to 39% in the non-cavitating and decreased by up to 24% in all three cavitating regimes. Chemical changes were more pronounced in cavitating regimes, where released soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) and increase of dissolved organic matter (DOM) compounds by up to 175% and 122% were achieved, respectively. Methane production increased in all four cases, with the highest increase of 70% corresponding to 312 mL CH4 g-1 COD. However, this treatment was not particularly efficient in terms of energy consumption. The best energy balance was found for the regime with a biochemical methane potencial increase of 43%.

Abstract
Chloroquine diphosphate (CQ), a weak base used to inhibit autophagic flux and treat malaria and rheumatoid diseases, has been shown, through unknown mechanisms, to improve glucose and lipid homeostasis in patients and rodents. We investigate herein the molecular mechanisms underlying these CQ beneficial metabolic actions in diet-induced obese mice. For this, C57BL6/J mice fed with either a chow or a high-fat diet (HFD) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) KO and adipocyte Atg7-deficient mice fed with a HFD were treated or not with CQ (60 mg/kg of body weight/day) during 8 weeks and evaluated for body weight, adiposity, glucose homeostasis and brown and white adipose tissues (BAT and WAT) UCP-1 content. CQ reduced body weight gain and adipose tissue and liver masses in mice fed with a HFD, without altering food intake, oxygen consumption, respiratory exchange ratio, spontaneous motor activity and feces caloric content. CQ attenuated the insulin intolerance, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia induced by HFD intake, such effects that were associated with increases in serum and liver fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) and BAT and WAT UCP-1 content. Interestingly, CQ beneficial metabolic actions of reducing body weight and adiposity and improving glucose homeostasis were preserved in HFD-fed UCP-1 KO and adipocyte Atg7 deficient mice. CQ reduces body weight gain and adiposity and improves glucose homeostasis in diet-induced obese mice through mechanisms that might involve FGF-21, but not UCP1-mediated nonshivering thermogenesis or inhibition of adipocyte autophagy.

Abstract
Air pollution affects energy homeostasis detrimentally. Yet, knowledge of how each isolated pollutant can impact energy metabolism remains incomplete. The present study was designed to investigate the distinct effects of 1,2-naphthoquinone (1,2-NQ) on energy metabolism since this pollutant increases at the same rate as diesel combustion. In particular, we aimed to determine in vivo effects of subchronic exposure to 1,2-NQ on metabolic and inflammatory parameters of wild-type mice (WT) and to explore the involvement of tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in this process. Males WT, TNFR1KO, and TLR4KO mice at eight weeks of age received 1,2-NQ or vehicle via nebulization five days a week for 17 weeks. In WT mice, 1,2-NQ slightly decreased the body mass compared to vehicle-WT. This effect was likely due to a mild food intake reduction and increased energy expenditure (EE) observed after six weeks of exposure. After nine weeks of exposure, we observed higher fasting blood glucose and impaired glucose tolerance, whereas insulin sensitivity was slightly improved compared to vehicle-WT. After 17 weeks of 1,2-NQ exposure, WT mice displayed an increased percentage of M1 and a decreased (p = 0.057) percentage of M2 macrophages in adipose tissue. The deletion of TNFR1 and TLR4 abolished most of the metabolic impacts caused by 1,2-NQ exposure, except for the EE and insulin sensitivity, which remained high in these mice under 1,2-NQ exposure. Our study demonstrates for the first time that subchronic exposure to 1,2-NQ affects energy metabolism in vivo. Although 1,2-NQ increased EE and slightly reduced feeding and body mass, the WT mice displayed higher inflammation in adipose tissue and impaired fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance. Thus, in vivo subchronic exposure to 1,2-NQ is harmful, and TNFR1 and TLR4 are partially involved in these outcomes.

Abstract
Thermal hydrolysis (TH) is widely employed in combination with anaerobic digestion (AD) to efficiently treat primary sludge and waste-activated sludge in municipal wastewater treatment plants. In this study, four different scenarios-conventional AD (S1), TH-AD (S2), AD-TH-AD (S3), and characteristics-based AD-TH-AD (S4, primary AD only for primary sludge)-were evaluated to determine the optimal deployment of TH and AD for treating primary sludge and waste-activated sludge to maximize net energy output. The maximum net energy output of 4899 MJ/t-TSfed (per ton total solids of sludge fed) was achieved in S4 when assuming the recovered heat was only used for AD heating and surplus heat was wasted, and the net energy output of S4 was 70.8 % higher than that of S1 and 48.6 % higher than that of S2. This remarkable improvement was attributed to a reduction of > 15.2 % in refractory compounds, resulting in a 17 % increase in methane yield. Importantly, this study provides the first comparison of refractory compounds between inter-thermal hydrolysis (inter-TH) and pre-thermal hydrolysis (pre-TH) using a simulated A2O process. Overall, this study provides innovative insights and strategies for enhancing the TH and AD process performance based on the specific characteristics of sewage sludge derived from wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract
Primary filtration is a compact pre-treatment process for municipal wastewater, which can lead to high removal of total suspended solids (TSS) if polymer is added prior to filtration. Extensive carbon removal with rotating belt filter (RBF) can be combined with filter primary sludge fermentation at ambient temperature, in order to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as carbon source for biological nutrient removal (BNR). This process was implemented at large pilot-scale and operated for more than a year. The results showed that the RBF efficiently removed particles >10 μm, and that the TSS removal had a strong linear correlation to the influent TSS concentration. Fermentation of the sludge at ambient temperature and five days retention time and addition of the fermentate to the wastewater could nearly double the VFA concentration in the wastewater by adding 31 ± 9 mg VFA-COD/L. Meanwhile, an increase of 2 mg/L of ammonium nitrogen, and 0.7 mg /L of phosphate phosphorus would be added to the wastewater with the fermentate. Adding the fermented sludge to the wastewater stream and removing the particles with RBF makes it possible to utilize nearly all the produced VFAs for BNR, and the feasibility of this configuration was shown at pilot-scale. According to simulations of subsequent BNR, the pre-treatment would lead to lower effluent total nitrogen concentrations. Alternatively, the required BNR volume could be reduced by 11-18 %. The estimated total biogas production was similar for pre-treatment with primary settler and RBF with fermentation. RBF without fermentation gave the most favourable energy balance, but did not reach the same low effluent value for total nitrogen as RBF with fermentation.

Abstract
The nervous system is composed of various functional neurons, some of which perceive sound or light, and these physical signals can be converted into bioelectrical signals. From the biophysical point of view, piezoelectric ceramic embedded in neuronal circuits can detect the external auditory waves, while phototube can capture light signals, so as to obtain two functional neurons with auditory recognition and light-dependent recognition. Considering the two identical or different functional neurons are connected by an induction coil to stimulate magnetic field coupling, and there will be energy diversity when they are driven by different initial conditions or external stimulation. Thus, synaptic connections can be activated and awakened in an adaptive manner when field energy is exchanged, and the coupling channel remains open until the energy diversity between neurons is controlled at a limited threshold. For this purpose, a criterion of the coupling strength increases exponentially is proposed to discuss the enhancement of neuronal synaptic connections. It is found that two neurons can be coupled adaptively to achieve complete synchronization, quasi-synchronization or intermittent quasi-synchronization. These results could help in designing functional assistive devices for patients with hearing or vision impairment.

Abstract
.High daily energy expenditure without compensatory increases in energy intake results in severe energy deficits during cold-weather military operations. The severity of energy deficits has been proportionally linked to declines in body mass, negative protein balance, suppression of androgen hormones, increases in systemic inflammation and degraded physical performance. Food availability does not appear to be the predominant factor causing energy deficits; providing additional rations or supplement snack bars does not reduce the severity of the energy deficits. Nutrition interventions that allow greater energy intake could be effective for reducing energy deficits during cold-weather military operations. One potential intervention is to increase energy density (i.e. energy per unit mass of food) by increasing dietary fat. Our laboratory recently reported that self-selected higher energy intakes and reductions in energy deficits were primarily driven by fat intake (r = 0.891, r2 = 0.475), which, of the three macronutrients. Further, soldiers who ate more fat lost less body mass, had lower inflammation, and maintained net protein balance compared to those who ate less fat. These data suggest that consuming high-fat energy-dense foods may be a viable nutritional intervention that mitigates the negative physiological effects of energy deficit and sustains physical performance during cold-weather military operations.

Abstract
Biogas from anaerobic digestion is a versatile energy carrier that can be upgraded to compressed biomethane gas (CBG) as a renewable and sustainable alternative to natural gas. Organic residues and energy crops are predicted to be major sources of bioenergy production in the future. Pre-treatment can reduce the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic energy crops such as Salix to anaerobic digestion, making it a potential biogas feedstock. This lignocellulosic material can be co-digested with animal manure, which has the complementary effect of increasing volumetric biogas yield. Salix varieties exhibit variations in yield, composition and biomethane potential values, which can have a significant effect on the overall biogas production system. This study assessed the impact of Salix varietal differences on the overall mass and energy balance of a co-digestion system using steam pre-treated Salix biomass and dairy manure (DaM) to produce CBG as the final product. Six commercial Salix varieties cultivated under unfertilised and fertilised conditions were compared. Energy and mass flows along this total process chain, comprising Salix cultivation, steam pre-treatment, biogas production and biogas upgrading to CBG, were evaluated. Two scenarios were considered: a base scenario without heat recovery and a scenario with heat recovery. The results showed that Salix variety had a significant effect on energy output-input ratio (R), with R values in the base scenario of 1.57-1.88 and in the heat recovery scenario of 2.36-2.94. In both scenarios, unfertilised var. Tordis was the best energy performer, while the fertilised var. Jorr was the worst. Based on this energy performance, Salix could be a feasible feedstock for co-digestion with DaM, although its R value was at the lower end of the range reported previously for energy crops.

Abstract
Liraglutide and other agonists of the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1RAs) are effective weight loss drugs, but how they suppress appetite remains unclear. GLP-1RAs inhibit hunger-promoting Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons of the arcuate hypothalamus (Arc) but only indirectly, implicating synaptic afferents to AgRP neurons. To investigate, we developed a method combining rabies-based connectomics with single-nuclei transcriptomics. Applying this method to AgRP neurons in mice predicts 21 afferent subtypes in the mediobasal and paraventricular hypothalamus. Among these are Trh+ Arc neurons (TrhArc), which express the Glp1r gene and are activated by the GLP-1RA liraglutide. Activating TrhArc neurons inhibits AgRP neurons and decreases feeding in an AgRP neuron-dependent manner. Silencing TrhArc neurons increases feeding and body weight and reduces liraglutide's satiating effects. Our results thus demonstrate a widely applicable method for molecular connectomics, reveal the molecular organization of AgRP neuron afferents, and shed light on a neurocircuit through which GLP-1RAs suppress appetite.

Abstract
Biochar was produced from polyculture microalgae cultivated in greywater using microwave pyrolysis. The highest biochar yield and fixed carbon content of 49.9% and 68.7% were obtained at microwave power (P) of 800 W and reaction time (T) of 8.6 min. The developed quadratic models, 166.96 - 0.23P - 3.87 T - 3.49 x10-3PT + 1.73 x10-4P2 + 0.13 T2 and - 73.79 + 0.29P + 1.86 T - 1.80 x10-4P2 could predict biochar yield and fixed carbon content respectively with errors of 6.2 and 7.9%. The volatile matter (VM), fixed carbon (FC), and high heating value (HHV) of the biomass were 69.2%. 23.4% and 17.6 MJ/Kg, respectively. VM, FC, and HHV for biochar obtained at optimum conditions were 20.2%, 68.7%, and 28.3 MJ/Kg, respectively. The process had a net positive energy balance of 11.32 MJ/Kg and energy efficiency of 1.76. This study paves the way for biochar production from greywater-grown microalgae, contributing to waste valorization and energy sustainability.

Abstract
Calorie restriction (CR) typically promotes a reduction in body mass, which correlates with increased lifespan. We evaluated the overall changes in survival, body mass dynamics, and body composition following long-term graded CR (580 days/19 months) in male C57BL/6J mice. Control mice (0% restriction) were fed ad libitum in the dark phase only (12-hour ad libitum [12AL]). CR groups were restricted by 10%-40% of their baseline food intake (10CR, 20CR, 30CR, and 40CR). Body mass was recorded daily, and body composition was measured at 8 time points. At 728 days/24 months, all surviving mice were culled. A gradation in survival rate over the CR groups was found. The pattern of body mass loss differed over the graded CR groups. Whereas the lower CR groups rapidly resumed an energy balance with no significant loss of fat or fat-free mass, changes in the 30 and 40CR groups were attributed to higher fat-free mass loss and protection of fat mass. Day-to-day changes in body mass were less variable under CR than for the 12AL group. There was no indication that body mass was influenced by external factors. Partial autocorrelation analysis examined the relationship between daily changes in body masses. A negative correlation between mass on Day 0 and Day +1 declined with age in the 12AL but not the CR groups. A reduction in the correlation with age suggested body mass homeostasis is a marker of aging that declines at the end of life and is protected by CR.

Abstract
The causal effect that veganism has on body weight has not been scientifically examined. An N of 1 self-experiment was conducted in which blinded body weight and additional behavioural and psychological measures were assessed during two phases of vegan vs. non-vegan lifestyle adherence. In study phase 1, body weight change was -0.8 kg over 1 month of veganism (vs. +0.5 kg non-vegan month). In study phase 2, weight change was -1.2 kg over two veganism months (vs. +1.6 kg non-vegan months). Behavioural and psychological measures were similar during vegan vs. non-vegan periods. Veganism appeared to reduce body weight in this N of 1 self-experiment.

Abstract
In this study, a mixed-cultural metabolic network for anaerobic digestion that included the concept of a "universal bacterium" was constructed, and metabolic flux analysis (MFA) applying this network was conducted to evaluate the flow of electrons and materials during H2 fermentation under various conditions. The MFA results from two H2 fermenters feeding glucose with (GP) or without (GA) the addition of peptone suggest that hydraulic retention time (HRT) presents a significant impact on hydrogen production, and the reversed trends could be observed at HRTs below and above 4 h. From the MFA results of lactate/acetate-fed H2 fermenter, the highest flux of H2 production is associated with more significant acetate consumption and the following pathways toward the anaplerotic reactions cycle that produces NADH. The occurrence of acetogenesis in the H2 fermenters using various types of bioethanol-fermented residues (BEFRs) was also identified according to the MFA results. By analyzing the MFA results of all 49 sets of data from H2 fermenters via Pearson's correlation, it was revealed that the flux of H2 production positively correlates to the reduction of ferredoxin with pyruvate oxidation, acetate formation, and acetate emission when lactate was produced in the system. On the contrary, negative relationships were found between the flux of H2 production and these three fluxes. The extended application of MFA provides additional information, including the fluxes between intracellular metabolites, and the information has the potential to be used in decision-making systems during the future operation of anaerobic processes by connecting operational parameters.

Abstract
The management of dairy processing wastewater (DPW) must address water pollution while delivering renewable energy and recovering resources. A high-rate anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was investigated for treating DPW, and the system was evaluated in terms of elemental flow, nutrient recovery, energy balance, and reduction of CO2 emission. The AnMBR system was superior in terms of both methanogenic performance and efficiency of bioenergy recovery in the DPW treatment, with a high net energy potential of 51.4-53.2 kWh/m3. The theoretical economic values of the digestate (13.8 $/m3) and permeate (4.1 $/m3) were assessed according to nutrient transformation and price of mineral fertilizer. The total CO2 emission equivalent in the AnMBR was 44.7 kg CO2-eq/m3, with a significant reduction of 54.1 kg CO2-eq/m3 compared to the conventional process. The application of the AnMBR in the DPW treatment is a promising approach for the development of carbon neutrality and a circular economy.

Abstract
Anthropogenically induced global climate change has caused profound impacts in the world ocean. Climate change related stressors, like ocean acidification (OA) and warming (OW) can affect physiological performance of marine species. However, studies evaluating the impacts of these stressors on algae-herbivore interactions have been much more scarce. We approached this issue by assessing the combined impacts of OA and OW on the physiological energetics of the herbivorous snail Tegula atra, and whether this snail is affected indirectly by changes in biochemical composition of the kelp Lessonia spicata, in response to OA and OW. Our results show that OA and OW induce changes in kelp biochemical composition and palatability (organic matter, phenolic content), which in turn affect snails' feeding behaviour and energy balance. Nutritional quality of food plays a key role on grazers' physiological energetics and can define the stability of trophic interactions in rapidly changing environments such as intertidal communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intake-balance assessments measure energy intake (EI) by summing energy expenditure (EE) with concurrent change in energy storage (ΔES). Prior work has not examined the validity of such calculations when EE is estimated via open-source techniques for research-grade accelerometry devices. The purpose of this study was to test the criterion validity of accelerometry-based intake-balance methods for a wrist-worn ActiGraph device. METHODS Healthy adults (n = 24) completed two 14-day measurement periods while wearing an ActiGraph accelerometer on the non-dominant wrist. During each period, criterion values of EI were determined based on ΔES measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry and EE measured by doubly labeled water. A total of 11 prediction methods were tested, 8 derived from the accelerometer and 3 from non-accelerometry methods (e.g., diet recall; included for comparison). Group-level validity was assessed through mean bias, while individual-level validity was assessed through mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, and Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS Mean bias for the three best accelerometry-based methods ranged from -167 to 124 kcal/day, versus -104 to 134 kcal/day for the non-accelerometry-based methods. The same three accelerometry-based methods had mean absolute error of 323-362 kcal/day and mean absolute percentage error of 18.1-19.3%, versus 353-464 kcal/day and 19.5-24.4% for the non-accelerometry-based methods. All 11 methods demonstrated systematic bias in the Bland-Altman analysis. CONCLUSIONS Accelerometry-based intake-balance methods have promise for advancing EI assessment, but ongoing refinement is necessary. We provide an R package to facilitate implementation and refinement of accelerometry-based methods in future research (see paulhibbing.com/IntakeBalance).

Abstract
Pseudomonas putida, a microbial host widely adopted for metabolic engineering, processes glucose through convergent peripheral pathways that ultimately yield 6-phosphogluconate. The periplasmic gluconate shunt (PGS), composed by glucose and gluconate dehydrogenases, sequentially transforms glucose into gluconate and 2-ketogluconate. Although the secretion of these organic acids by P. putida has been extensively recognized, the mechanism and spatiotemporal regulation of the PGS remained elusive thus far. To address this challenge, we adopted a dynamic 13C- and 2H-metabolic flux analysis strategy, termed D-fluxomics. D-fluxomics demonstrated that the PGS underscores a highly dynamic metabolic architecture in glucose-dependent batch cultures of P. putida, characterized by hierarchical carbon uptake by the PGS throughout the cultivation. Additionally, we show that gluconate and 2-ketogluconate accumulation and consumption can be solely explained as a result of the interplay between growth rate-coupled and decoupled metabolic fluxes. As a consequence, the formation of these acids in the PGS is inversely correlated to the bacterial growth rate-unlike the widely studied overflow metabolism of Escherichia coli and yeast. Our findings, which underline survival strategies of soil bacteria thriving in their natural environments, open new avenues for engineering P. putida towards efficient, sugar-based bioprocesses.

Abstract
This review examines the ways in which physical activity can contribute to a sustainable future by addressing significant public health issues. The review begins by identifying obesity and ageing as two major challenges facing societies around the world due to the association of both with the risk of chronic disease. Recent developments in the understanding and treatment of obesity are examined followed by an appraisal of the role of exercise alone and in combination with other therapies in preventing and managing obesity. The review then addresses the interaction between exercise and appetite due to the central role appetite plays in the development of overweight and obesity. The final section of the review examines the potential of physical activity to combat age-related chronic disease risk including CVD, cancer and dementia. It is concluded that while bariatric surgery and pharmacotherapy are the most effective treatments for severe obesity, physical activity has a role to play facilitating and enhancing weight loss in combination with other methods. Where weight/fat reduction via exercise is less than expected this is likely due to metabolic adaptation induced by physiological changes facilitating increased energy intake and decreased energy expenditure. Physical activity has many health benefits independent of weight control including reducing the risk of developing CVD, cancer and dementia and enhancing cognitive function in older adults. Physical activity may also provide resilience for future generations by protecting against the more severe effects of global pandemics and reducing greenhouse gas emissions via active commuting.

Abstract
Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a spectrum of diseases characterized by insensitivity of target tissues to the action of parathyroid hormone and, consequently, by the presence of hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcaemia of varying severity. Early-onset obesity is a feature of PHP type 1A. This article discusses the need to establish uniform criteria to guide the nutritional management of patients with PHP. A decrease in energy expenditure calls for an adjustment of the energy content of the diet. Reducing the intake of foods rich in inorganic phosphorus helps to manage hyperphosphataemia. Targeted nutrition should be part of the treatment plan of children and adolescents with PHP, since it contributes to modulating the calcium and phosphorus metabolism imbalances characteristic of these patients.

Abstract
Nutritional interventions often rely on subjective assessments of energy intake (EI), but these are susceptible to measurement error. To introduce an accelerometer-based intake-balance method for assessing EI using data from a time-restricted eating (TRE) trial. Nineteen participants with overweight/obesity (25-63 years old; 16 females) completed a 12-week intervention (NCT03129581) in a control group (unrestricted feeding; n 8) or TRE group (n 11). At the start and end of the intervention, body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and daily energy expenditure (EE) was assessed for 2 weeks via wrist-worn accelerometer. EI was back-calculated as the sum of net energy storage (from DXA) and EE (from accelerometer). Accelerometer-derived EI estimates were compared against estimates from the body weight planner of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Mean EI for the control group declined by 138 and 435 kJ/day for the accelerometer and NIDDK methods, respectively (both P ≥ 0·38), v. 1255 and 1469 kJ/day, respectively, for the TRE group (both P < 0·01). At follow-up, the accelerometer and NIDDK methods showed excellent group-level agreement (mean bias of -297 kJ/day across arms; standard error of estimate 1054 kJ/day) but high variability at the individual level (limits of agreement from -2414 to +1824 kJ/day). The accelerometer-based intake-balance method showed plausible sensitivity to change, and EI estimates were biologically and behaviourally plausible. The method may be a viable alternative to self-report EI measures. Future studies should assess criterion validity using doubly labelled water.

Abstract
This paper presents two inter-dependent frameworks for understanding the etiology of obesity and the regain of body and fat mass after weight loss. The 'Invisible Hand of Metabolism' illustrates how physiologic states such as body and fat mass and blood glucose levels arise from the unregulated, uncontrolled, yet competitive behavior of trillions of semi-autonomous cells. The 'Competition Model of Metabolism' is an explanatory (mechanistic) framework that details how organismal and cell-specific behaviors generate the apparent stability of physiologic states despite metabolic perturbations (e.g., weight-loss and exercise). Together, these frameworks show that body and fat mass and blood glucose levels are not regulated, controlled, or defended but emerge from the complexity and functional plasticity of competitive cellular relations. Therefore, we argue that the use of abstract constructs such as 'regulation', 'control', 'glucostats', 'adipostats', and 'set-/settling-points' hinders the understanding of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in human and nonhuman mammals.

Abstract
The microbiome has become recognized as a critical player in the understanding of human physiology and pathophysiology, especially with regard to the metabolic syndrome. While recent findings emphasize the impact of the microbiome on metabolic health, new questions simultaneously arise: Is there a dysbiotic microbiome before the onset of metabolic disorders or is dysbiosis caused by a deranged metabolism? Furthermore, are there opportunities to employ the microbiome as a tool for novel treatment strategies in patients with metabolic syndrome? The intention of this review article is to describe the fashionable term "microbiome" beyond its current research approaches, which will be relevant to the practicing internist.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Oral ketone supplements may mimic the beneficial effects of endogenous ketones on energy metabolism as β-hydroxybutyrate has been proposed to increase energy expenditure and improve body weight regulation. Therefore, our objective was to compare the effects of a one-day isocaloric ketogenic diet, fasting and supplementation with ketone salts on energy expenditure and appetite perception. METHODS Eight healthy young adults (4 women, 4 men, age 24 ± 3 years, BMI 24.3 ± 3.1 kg/m2) participated in a randomized cross-over trial with four 24 h-interventions in a whole room indirect calorimeter at a physical activity level of 1.65: (i) total fasting (FAST), (ii) isocaloric ketogenic diet (3.1% energy from carbohydrates (CHO), KETO), (iii) isocaloric control diet (47.4% energy from CHO, ISO), and (iv) ISO supplemented with 38.7 g/d ketone salts (exogenous ketones, EXO). Effects on serum ketone levels (15 h-iAUC), energy metabolism (total energy expenditure, TEE; sleeping energy expenditure, SEE; macronutrient oxidation) and subjective appetite were measured. RESULTS Compared to ISO, ketone levels were considerably higher with FAST and KETO and little higher with EXO (all p > 0.05). Total and sleeping energy expenditure did not differ between ISO, FAST and EXO whereas KETO increased TEE (+110 ± 54 kcal/d vs. ISO, p < 0.05) and SEE (+201 ± 90 kcal/d vs. ISO, p < 0.05). CHO oxidation was slightly decreased with EXO compared to ISO (-48 ± 27 g/d, p < 0.05) resulting in a positive CHO balance (p < 0.05). No differences between the interventions were found for subjective appetite ratings (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION A 24 h-ketogenic diet may contribute to maintain a neutral energy balance by increasing energy expenditure. Exogenous ketones in addition to an isocaloric diet did not improve regulation of energy balance. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT04490226 https://clinicaltrials.gov/.

Abstract
Cows fed total mixed rations (silage-based) may not receive as much essential fatty acids (EFAs) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) as cows fed pasture-based rations (fresh grass) containing rich sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids. CLA-induced milk fat depression allows dairy cows to conserve more metabolisable energy, thereby shortening the state of negative energy balance and reducing excessive fat mobilisation at early lactation. EFAs, particularly α-linolenic acid, exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, thereby modulating immune functions. Thus, combined EFA and CLA supplementation seems to be an effective nutritional strategy to relieve energy metabolism and to improve immune response, which are often compromised during the transition from late pregnancy to lactation in high-yielding dairy cows. There has been extensive research on this idea over the last two decades, and despite promising results, several interfering factors have led to varying findings, making it difficult to conclude whether and under what conditions EFA and CLA supplementations are beneficial for dairy cows during the transition period. This article reviews the latest studies on the effects of EFA and CLA supplementation, alone or in combination, on dairy cow metabolism and health during various stages around parturition. Our review article summarises and provides novel insights into the mechanisms by which EFA and/or CLA influence markers of metabolism, energy homeostasis and partitioning, immunity, and inflammation revealed by a deep molecular phenotyping.

Abstract
The present study investigated the synergistic characteristics between abiotic and biotic transformation with a view to improving the methane production efficiency of thermophilic and mesophilic sequencing batch dry anaerobic digestion (SBD-AD). The pilot scale experiment consisted of a lignocellulosic material based on a mixture of corn straw and cow dung. A leachate bed reactor was used for an AD cycle of 40 days. Several distinct differences are reflected in biogas (methane) production and VFA concentration and composition. A combination of first-order hydrolysis and a modified Gompertz model determined that the holocellulose (cellulose + hemicellulose) and maximum methanogenic efficiency at thermophilic temperatures were increased by 112.03 % and 90.09 %, respectively. Additionally, the methane production peak was extended by 3-5 days in comparison with that at mesophilic temperatures. The microbial community exhibited vastly different functional network relationships under the two temperature conditions (P < 0.05). The data indicate that Clostridales and Methanobacteria had preferable synergistic effects and that the metabolism of hydrophilic methanogens is necessary for the conversion of VFA to methane during thermophilic SBD-AD. The effect of mesophilic conditions on Clostridales was relative weakened, and acetophilic methanogens were mainly present. Moreover, simulation of the full-chain and operational strategy of SBD-AD engineering resulted in a decrease in heat energy consumption of 21.4-64.3 % at thermophilic temperatures and 30.0-90.0 % at mesophilic temperatures from winter to summer. Furthermore, the total net energy production of thermophilic SBD-AD was increased by 105.2 % in comparison with that at mesophilic temperatures, demonstrating strengthened energy recovery. Overall, raising the SBD-AD temperature to thermophilic levels has considerable application value for improving the treatment capacity of agricultural lignocellulosic waste.

Abstract
Evapotranspiration is a key consideration for addressing a number of scientific and engineering issues. There are considerable errors in current evapotranspiration models due to the high uncertainty in model parameters. Considering that evapotranspiration models maintain the same mathematical form when run on different timescales, we argue that the uncertainty in model parameters can be reduced by considering the parameter variability across different timescales. Here, the four key parameters in the energy balance-based evapotranspiration model, including aerodynamic roughness length, thermodynamic roughness length, surface conductance, and energy balance ratio, are retrieved and evaluated on instantaneous and daily timescales based on the observations from 113 sites in the FLUXNET2015 dataset. Then data-driven instantaneous and daily parameter models are built to estimate evapotranspiration. The results show that strong multi-timescale variability occurs in all four parameters. The coefficients of variation of the four instantaneous parameters range from 0.32 to 1.70. The links of parameters on different timescales are weak. The correlation coefficients of the daily mean value of instantaneous parameter values and daily parameter values vary from 0.44 to 0.83. By considering the multi-timescale variability of the parameters, the accuracy of evapotranspiration estimation can be largely improved, with RMSE of the instantaneous and daily evapotranspiration estimation decreasing from 35.76 to 9.52 W m-2 and from 12.01 to 3.01 W m-2, respectively. We also find that the parameter models perform well on their inherent timescales but degrade significantly when transferring to other timescales. This study proves the necessity of defining parameter variability across different timescales in evapotranspiration models and provides new insight into the model parameters.

Abstract
Reciprocal communication between neurons and glia is essential for normal brain functioning and adequate physiological functions, including energy balance. In vertebrates, the homeostatic process that adjusts food intake and energy expenditure in line with physiological requirements is tightly controlled by numerous neural cell types located within the hypothalamus and the brainstem and organized in complex networks. Within these neural networks, peculiar ependymoglial cells called tanycytes are nowadays recognized as multifunctional players in the physiological mechanisms of appetite control, partly by modulating orexigenic and anorexigenic neurons. Here, we review recent advances in tanycytes' impact on hypothalamic neuronal activity, emphasizing on arcuate neurons.

Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are increasingly common worldwide. While these disorders have increased in prevalence over the past several decades, there has been a concomitant reduction in sleep duration. Short sleep duration has been associated with higher rates of obesity and T2D, and the causality of these associations and their directionality, continue to necessitate evaluation. In this review we consider the evidence that sleep is an intrinsic factor in the development of obesity and chronic metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and T2D, while evaluating a potential bi-directional association. We consider the evidence that diet and meal composition, which are known to impact glycemic control, may have both chronic and acute impact upon sleep. Moreover, we consider that postprandial nocturnal metabolism and peripheral glycemia may affect sleep quality. We propose putative mechanisms whereby acute effects of nighttime glucose excursions may lead to increased sleep fragmentation. We conclude that dietary manipulations, particularly with respect to carbohydrate quality, may confer sleep benefits. Future research may seek to evaluate the effectiveness of synergistic nutrient strategies to promote sleep quality, with particular attention to carbohydrate quality, quantity, and availability as well as carbohydrate to protein ratio.

Abstract
The interaction of exercise with appetite control and energy intake has been widely studied due to the ability of exercise-related energy expenditure to influence energy and substrate balance. Many empirical studies have explored appetite and energy intake responses to acute (single) exercise bouts involving a variety of protocols in diverse populations revealing several consistent trends. The balance of evidence suggests that acute moderate-to-vigorous intensity land-based exercise suppresses subjective appetite feelings and the orexigenic hormone acylated ghrelin and elevates the anorexigenic hormones peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1. These perturbations are transient and hormone concentrations usually return to resting values in the hours after exercise without evoking compensatory increases in appetite or energy intake on the same day. This evidence counters the popular assertion that exercise transiently increases appetite and may prompt greater energy intake at subsequent meals. The indifference of the appetite control system to acute exercise-induced energy deficits contrasts with the immediate increases in appetite and energy intake provoked by equivalent diet-induced energy deficits. There is, however, considerable inter-individual variability in subjective appetite and hormonal responses to acute exercise with some individuals experiencing greater exercise-induced appetite suppression than others. Current evidence supports the promotion of exercise as a strategy for inducing a short-term energy deficit but the relevance of this for long-term appetite regulation and the control of body mass remains uncertain.

Abstract
Animals have finite energy reserves for growth, survival, and reproduction and must maintain a stable energy balance. Measuring energy balance in the wild, however, is beset with methodological challenges. Quantification of urinary C-peptide (uCP), a proxy for insulin secretion, has enabled researchers to non-invasively estimate energy balance, and positive relationships between uCP levels and energy intake have been documented in numerous non-human primates. Comparatively few studies show that, consistent with insulin physiology, energy expenditure also alters levels of uCP. The timescale and extent of this relationship, however, remains unclear given the reliance on crude measures of activity and inferred energy expenditure. Here, for the first time, we test for effects of accelerometer-derived Vectorial Dynamic Body Acceleration (VeDBA) - a continuous measure of physical activity energy expenditure - on urinary C-peptide (uCP) levels in n = 12 wild chacma baboons (Papio ursinus). Applying a model selection approach, we show that VeDBA summed over short timescales (30 min to 1 h) prior to urine collection was negatively associated with uCP levels. Using the acceleration-based time individuals spent 'non-stationary' (i.e. locomoting) prior to urine collection as a predictor - instead of summed VeDBA - revealed similar but less clear results. Overall, the negative relationship between VeDBA and uCP levels highlights the importance of quantifying physical activity energy expenditure when using uCP measures to estimate energy balance and has potential implications for the field of energetics accelerometry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity and BMI have been individually associated with cancer survivorship but have not yet been studied in combinations in colorectal cancer patients. Here, we investigate individual and combined associations of physical activity and BMI groups with colorectal cancer survival outcomes. METHODS Self-reported physical activity levels (MET hrs/wk) were assessed using an adapted version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) at baseline in 931 patients with stage I-III colorectal cancer and classified into 'highly active' and'not-highly active'(≥ / < 18 MET hrs/wk). BMI (kg/m2) was categorized into 'normal weight', 'overweight', and 'obese'. Patients were further classified into combined physical activity and BMI groups. Cox-proportional hazard models with Firth correction were computed to assess associations [hazard ratio (HR), 95% profile HR likelihood confidence interval (95% CI) between individual and combined physical activity and BMI groups with overall and disease-free survival in colorectal cancer patients. RESULTS 'Not-highly active' compared to 'highly active' and 'overweight'/ 'obese' compared to 'normal weight' patients had a 40-50% increased risk of death or recurrence (HR: 1.41 (95% CI: 0.99-2.06), p = 0.03; HR: 1.49 (95% CI: 1.02-2.21) and HR: 1.51 (95% CI: 1.02-2.26), p = 0.04, respectively). 'Not-highly active' patients had worse disease-free survival outcomes, regardless of their BMI, compared to 'highly active/normal weight' patients. 'Not-highly active/obese' patients had a 3.66 times increased risk of death or recurrence compared to 'highly active/normal weight' patients (HR: 4.66 (95% CI: 1.75-9.10), p = 0.002). Lower activity thresholds yielded smaller effect sizes. CONCLUSION Physical activity and BMI were individually associated with disease-free survival among colorectal cancer patients. Physical activity seems to improve survival outcomes in patients regardless of their BMI.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM) commonly shows low biogas output and unsatisfactory economic performance. In this study, thermophilic AD (TAD, 50 ± 1 °C) was combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP, 170 °C/10 bar), to investigate its potential for maximizing biogas yield, securing successful digestion and microbial diversity, as well as improving energy balance. Four lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactors were operated for 300 days and compared with each other, i.e., reactor 1 (raw SM fed in mesophilic AD: RSM-MAD), reactor 2 (THP-treated SM fed in MAD: TSM-MAD), reactor 3 (RSM-TAD), and reactor 4 (TSM-TAD). The results showed that THP was efficient to increase methane production of SM, TSM-TAD mode led to the highest methane yield (129.8 ± 40.5 mL-CH4/g-VS/day) among the tests (p < 0.05). Although TAD was more likely to induce free ammonia (> 700 mg/L) or volatile fatty acids (> 6000 mg/L) accumulation compared with MAD in start-up phase, TSM-TAD treatment mode behaved a sustainable digestion process in a long-term operation. For TSM-TAD scenario, higher Shannon-Weaver (3.873) and lower Simpson index (0.061) indicated this mode ensured and enlarged the diversity of bacteria communities. Phylum Bathyarchaeota was dominant (59.3%-90.0%) in archaea community, followed by Euryarchaeota in the four reactors. RSM-MAD treatment mode achieved the highest energy output (4.65 GJ/day), TSM-TAD was less effective (-17.38 GJ/day) due to increased energy demands. Thus improving the energetic efficiency of THP units is recommended for the development of TSM-TAD treatment mode.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS It is unclear if dietary adjustments to maintain energy balance during reduced physical activity can offset inactivity-induced reductions in insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal to produce normal daily glucose concentrations and meal responses. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the impact of long-term physical inactivity (60 days of bed rest) on daily glycemia when in energy balance. METHODS Interstitial glucose concentrations were measured using Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) for 5 days before and towards the end of bed rest in 20 healthy, young males (Age: 34 ± 8 years; BMI: 23.5 ± 1.8 kg/m2). Energy intake was reduced during bed rest to match energy expenditure, but the types of foods and timing of meals was maintained. Fasting venous glucose and insulin concentrations were determined, as well as the change in whole-body glucose disposal using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp (HIEC). RESULTS Following long-term bed rest, fasting plasma insulin concentration increased 40% (p = 0.004) and glucose disposal during the HIEC decreased 24% (p < 0.001). Interstitial daily glucose total area under the curve (tAUC) from pre-to post-bed rest increased on average by 6% (p = 0.041), despite a 20 and 25% reduction in total caloric and carbohydrate intake, respectively. The nocturnal period (00:00-06:00) showed the greatest change to glycemia with glucose tAUC for this period increasing by 9% (p = 0.005). CGMS measures of daily glycemic variability (SD, J-Index, M-value and MAG) were not changed during bed rest. CONCLUSIONS Reduced physical activity (bed rest) increases glycemia even when daily energy intake is reduced to maintain energy balance. However, the disturbance to daily glucose homeostasis was much more modest than the reduced capacity to dispose of glucose, and glycemic variability was not negatively affected by bed rest, likely due to positive mitigating effects from the contemporaneous reduction in dietary energy and carbohydrate intake. Abstract
From a public health perspective, much of the interest in the relationship between exercise and appetite rests on the implications for energy balance and obesity. Energy balance reflects a dynamic 2-way interaction between energy expenditure (EE) and energy intake (EI). Physical activity and exercise, and appetite are the behavioural components of EE and EI, respectively. Beyond EE, exercise is a powerful and complex physiological stimulus acting on several bodily systems. There are multiple effects of frequent and prolonged exercise on appetite which include inter alia an increase in fasting hunger, an enhancement of post-prandial satiety, a modulation of the hedonic responses to food and improvements in eating behaviour traits. These lead to variable adjustments in EI and in a reduction in the susceptibility to overconsumption. Frequent and prolonged physical activity and exercise behaviour can strengthen and sensitise the appetite control system, whilst physical inactivity and sedentariness (low level of EE) fails to downregulate EI and can permit overconsumption. Not all of the effects of exercise operate uniformly to drive appetite in the same direction. The complexity of the interaction between EE and EI means that the effects of prolonged exercise are characterised by substantial individual heterogeneity. This leads to variable effects on energy balance and body mass.

Abstract
Gonadal sex steroids are important regulators of energy balance in adult rodents, and gonadectomy (GDX) has opposing effects on weight gain in sexually mature males and females. Puberty is associated with the emergence of sex differences in weight, body composition, and feeding behaviors, yet the role of gonadal hormones at puberty remains unclear. To address this, we performed GDX or sham surgery in male and female C57Bl/6 mice at postnatal day (P)25 (prepubertal) or P60 (postpubertal) timepoints and measured weight and body composition for 35 days, after which ad libitum and operant food intake was measured using Feeding Experimentation Device 3 (FED3s) in the home cage. Consistent with previous studies, postpubertal GDX caused weight gain in females and weight loss in males and increased adiposity in both sexes. However, prepubertal GDX decreased weight gain and altered body composition across the adolescent transition (P25 to P60) in males but had no effect in females. Despite the varied effects on weight, GDX decreased food intake and motivation for food as assessed in operant tasks regardless of sex or timing of surgery relative to puberty. Our findings indicate that GDX interacts with both sex and age at surgery to influence weight, body composition, and feeding behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatty acid metabolism in the hypothalamus has an important role in food intake, but its specific role in AgRP neurons is poorly understood. Here, we examined whether carnitinea palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), a key enzyme in mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, affects energy balance. METHODS To obtain Cpt1aKO mice and their control littermates, Cpt1a(flox/flox) mice were crossed with tamoxifen-inducible AgRPCreERT2 mice. Food intake and body weight were analyzed weekly in both males and females. At 12 weeks of age, metabolic flexibility was determined by ghrelin-induced food intake and fasting-refeeding satiety tests. Energy expenditure was analyzed by calorimetric system and thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue. To study fluid balance the analysis of urine and water intake volumes; osmolality of urine and plasma; as well as serum levels of angiotensin and components of RAAS (renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system) were measured. At the central level, changes in AgRP neurons were determined by: (1) analyzing specific AgRP gene expression in RiboTag-Cpt1aKO mice obtained by crossing Cpt1aKO mice with RiboTag mice; (2) measuring presynaptic terminal formation in the AgRP neurons with the injection of the AAV1-EF1a-DIO-synaptophysin-GFP in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus; (3) analyzing AgRP neuronal viability and spine formations by the injection AAV9-EF1a-DIO-mCherry in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus; (4) analyzing in situ the specific AgRP mitochondria in the ZsGreen-Cpt1aKO obtained by breeding ZsGreen mice with Cpt1aKO mice. Two-way ANOVA analyses were performed to determine the contributions of the effect of lack of CPT1A in AgRP neurons in the sex. RESULTS Changes in food intake were just seen in male Cpt1aKO mice while only female Cpt1aKO mice increased energy expenditure. The lack of Cpt1a in the AgRP neurons enhanced brown adipose tissue activity, mainly in females, and induced a substantial reduction in fat deposits and body weight. Strikingly, both male and female Cpt1aKO mice showed polydipsia and polyuria, with more reduced serum vasopressin levels in females and without osmolality alterations, indicating a direct involvement of Cpt1a in AgRP neurons in fluid balance. AgRP neurons from Cpt1aKO mice showed a sex-dependent gene expression pattern, reduced mitochondria and decreased presynaptic innervation to the paraventricular nucleus, without neuronal viability alterations. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlight that fatty acid metabolism and CPT1A in AgRP neurons show marked sex differences and play a relevant role in the neuronal processes necessary for the maintenance of whole-body fluid and energy balance.

METHODS In a randomized, open-label crossover design, twenty-five healthy men (n = 10) and women (n = 15) consumed three diets over a 24-h period: moderate carbohydrate and sugar content (MODSUG = 50% carbohydrate [20% sugars], 15% protein, 35% fat); low sugar content (LOWSUG = 50% carbohydrate [< 5% sugars], 15% protein, 35% fat); and low carbohydrate content (LOWCHO = 8% carbohydrate [< 5% sugars], 15% protein, 77% fat). Postprandial metabolic responses to a prescribed breakfast (20% EI) were monitored under laboratory conditions before an ad libitum test lunch, with subsequent diet and physical activity monitoring under free-living conditions until blood sample collection the following morning. RESULTS The MODSUG, LOWSUG and LOWCHO diets resulted in similar mean [95%CI] rates of both physical activity energy expenditure (771 [624, 919] vs. 677 [565, 789] vs. 802 [614, 991] kcal·d-1; p = 0.29] and energy intake (2071 [1794, 2347] vs. 2195 [1918, 2473] vs. 2194 [1890, 2498] kcal·d-1; P = 0.34), respectively. The LOWCHO condition elicited the lowest glycaemic and insulinaemic responses to breakfast (P < 0.01) but the highest 24-h increase in LDL-cholesterol concentrations (P < 0.001), with no differences between the MODSUG and LOWSUG treatments. Leptin concentrations decreased over 24-h of consuming LOWCHO relative to LOWSUG (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION When energy density is controlled for, restricting either sugar or total dietary carbohydrate does not modulate physical activity level or energy intake over a 24-h period (~ 19-h free-living) despite substantial metabolic changes. Abstract
Appetite is a determinant of dietary intake and is impacted by sex hormones, exercise, and body composition among individuals without chronic conditions. Whether appetite is altered by exercise in the context of estrogen suppression and cancer survivorship is unknown. This randomized cross-over study compared appetite and ad libitum energy intake (EI) after acute resistance exercise (REx) versus sedentary (SED) conditions and in relation to body composition and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in breast cancer survivors (BCS). Physically inactive premenopausal females with previous stage I-III estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer completed a single bout of REx or SED 35 minutes after a standardized breakfast meal. Appetite visual analog scales and hormones (total ghrelin and peptide-YY [PYY]) were measured before and 30, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes post-meal and expressed as area under the curve (AUC). Participants were offered a buffet-type meal 180 minutes after breakfast to assess ad libitum EI. Body composition (dual X-ray absorptiometry) and RMR (indirect calorimetry) were measured during a separate visit. Sixteen BCS were included (age: 46 ± 2 y, BMI: 24.9 ± 1.0 kg/m2). There were no differences in appetite ratings or EI between conditions. There were no differences in appetite hormone AUC, but REx resulted in lower ghrelin 120 (-85 ± 39 pg/mL, p = 0.031) and 180 (-114 ± 43 pg/mL, p = 0.018) minutes post-breakfast and higher PYY 90 (21 ± 10 pg/mL, p = 0.028) and 120 (14 ± 7 pg/mL, p = 0.041) minutes post-breakfast. Fat-free mass and RMR negatively correlated with hunger and prospective food consumption AUC after SED, but not REx. In sum, a single REx bout temporarily reduces orexigenic and increases anorexic appetite hormones, but not acute subjective appetite sensations or EI.

Abstract
From a physical viewpoint, any external stimuli including noise disturbance can inject energy into the media, and the electric response is regulated by the equivalent electric stimulus. For example, mode transition in electric activities in neurons occurs and kinds of spatial patterns are formed during the wave propagation. In this paper, a feasible criterion is suggested to explain and control the growth of electric synapse and memristive synapse between Hindmarsh-Rose neurons in the presence of noise. It is claimed that synaptic coupling can be enhanced adaptively due to energy diversity, and the coupling intensity is increased to a saturation value until two neurons reach certain energy balance. Two identical neurons can reach perfect synchronization when electric synapse coupling is further increased. This scheme is also considered in a chain neural network and uniform noise is applied on all neurons. However, reaching synchronization becomes difficult for neurons in presenting spiking, bursting, and chaotic and periodic patterns, even when the local energy balance is corrupted to continue further growth of the coupling intensity. In the presence of noise, energy diversity becomes uncertain because of spatial diversity in excitability, and development of regular patterns is blocked. The similar scheme is used to control the growth of memristive synapse for neurons, and the synchronization stability and pattern formation are controlled by the energy diversity among neurons effectively. These results provide possible guidance for knowing the biophysical mechanism for synapse growth and energy flow can be applied to control the synchronous patterns between neurons.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Obesity is highly prevalent and is associated with bone fragility and fracture. The changing nutrient availability to bone in obesity is an important facet of bone health. The goal of this article is to summarize current knowledge on the effects of carbohydrate and dietary fat availability on bone, particularly in the context of other tissues. RECENT FINDINGS The skeleton is a primary site for fatty acid and glucose uptake. The trafficking of carbohydrates and fats into tissues changes with weight loss and periods of weight gain. Exercise acutely influences nutrient uptake into bone and may affect nutrient partitioning to bone. Bone cells secrete hormones that signal to the brain and other tissues information about its energetic state, which may alter whole-body nutrient trafficking. There is a critical need for studies to address the changes that metabolic perturbations have on nutrient availability in bone.

Abstract
This study compared the appetite and energy intake effects of three post-exercise beverages at a subsequent post-exercise meal. On three occasions, ten active males: (mean ± sd) age 21.3 ± 1.2 y, V˙ O2peak 58 ± 5 mL/kg/min) performed 30-min cycling at ∼60% V˙ O2peak and five 4-min intervals at 85% V˙ O2peak. Post-exercise, placebo (PLA: 57 kJ), skimmed milk (MILK: 1002 kJ) or sucrose (CHO: 1000 kJ) beverages (615 mL) were consumed. Sixty min post-beverage, subjects consumed an ad-libitum pasta lunch in a 30 min eating period. Subjective appetite and plasma acylated ghrelin and plasma glucose were determined pre-exercise, post-exercise and pre-meal, with sensory characteristics of beverages rated. Ad-libitum energy intake in MILK (6746 ± 2035) kJ) was lower than CHO (7762 ± 1921) kJ) (P = 0.038; dz = 0.98; large effect) and tended to be lower than PLA (7672 (2005) kJ) (P = 0.078; dz = 0.76; medium effect). Including energy consumed in beverages, energy intake was greater in CHO than PLA (P = 0.010; dz = 1.24; large effect) or MILK (P = 0.026; dz = 0.98; large effect), with PLA and MILK not different (P = 0.960; dz = 0.02; trial effect). Plasma ghrelin, plasma glucose and appetite were not different between trials. MILK was perceived thicker than CHO (P = 0.020; dz = 1.11; large effect) and creamier than PLA (P = 0.026; dz = 1.06; large effect). These results suggest that when energy balance is important for an exerciser, post-exercise skimmed milk ingestion reduces energy intake compared to a sucrose beverage and might therefore help facilitate recovery/adaptation without affecting energy balance.
