Abstract
Previous research investigated cross-modal influence of olfactory stimuli on perception and evaluation of faces. However, little is known about the neural dynamics underpinning this multisensory perception, and no research examined perception for images of oneself, and others, in presence of fragrances. This study investigated the neural mechanisms of olfactory-visual processing using electroencephalography (EEG) and subjective evaluations of self- and other-images. 22 female participants evaluated images of female actors and themselves while being exposed to the fragrance of a commercially available body wash or clean air delivered via olfactometer. Participants rated faces for attractiveness, femininity, confidence and glamorousness on visual analogue scales. EEG data was recorded and event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with onset of face stimuli were analysed to consider effects of fragrance presence on face processing, and interactions between fragrance and self-other image-type. Subjective ratings of confidence, attractiveness and femininity were increased for both image-types in pleasant fragrance relative to clean air condition. ERP components covering early-to-late stages of face processing were modulated by the presence of fragrance. Findings also revealed a cross-modal fragrance-face interaction, with pleasant fragrance particularly affecting ERPs to self-images in mid-latency ERP components. Results showed that the pleasant fragrance of the commercially available body wash impacted how participants perceived faces of self and others. Self- and other-image faces were subjectively rated as more attractive, confident and feminine in the presence of the pleasant fragrance compared to an un-fragranced control. The pleasant fragrance also modulated underlying electrophysiological activity. For the first time, an effect of pleasant fragrance on face perception was observed in the N1 component, suggesting impact within 100 ms. Pleasant fragrance also demonstrated greater impact on subsequent neural processing for self, relative to other-faces. The findings have implications for understanding multisensory integration during evaluations of oneself and others.

Abstract
Omitted stimulus potentials (OSPs) are elicited in response to the omission of expected stimuli and are thought to reflect prediction errors. If prediction errors are signaled in the sensory cortex, OSPs are expected to be generated in the sensory cortex. The present study investigated the involvement of the early visual cortex in the generation of OSPs by testing whether omitted visual stimuli elicit brain responses in a spatially specific manner. Checkerboard pattern stimuli were presented alternately in the upper and lower visual fields, and the stimuli were omitted in 10 % of the trials. Event-related potentials were recorded from 33 participants. While a retinotopic C1 component was evoked by real visual stimuli, omitted stimuli did not produce any response reflecting retinotopy but did elicit a visual mismatch negativity, which was larger for omitted stimuli expected in the lower visual field than for those in the upper visual field. These results suggest that omitted visual stimuli are processed in a different pathway than actual stimuli.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The worldwide trend of demographic aging highlights the progress made in healthcare, albeit with health challenges like Alzheimer's Disease (AD), prevalent in individuals aged 65 and above. Its early detection at the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage is crucial. Event-related potentials (ERPs) obtained by averaging EEG segments responded to repeated events are vital for cognitive impairment research. Consequently, examining intra-trial ERP variability is vital for comprehending fluctuations within psychophysiological processes of interest. This study aimed to investigate cognitive deficiencies and instability in MCI using ERP variability and its asymmetry from a prefrontal two-channel EEG device. METHODS In this study, ERP variability for both target and non-target responses was examined using the response variance curve (RVC) in a sample comprising 481 participants with MCI and 1,043 age-matched healthy individuals. The participants engaged in auditory selective attention tasks. Cognitive decline was assessed using the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The research employed various statistical methods, including independent t-tests, and univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses. These analyses were conducted to investigate group differences and explore the relationships between neuropsychological test results, ERP variability and its asymmetry measures, and the prevalence of MCI. RESULTS Our results showed that patients with MCI exhibited unstable cognitive processing, characterized by increased ERP variability compared to cognitively normal (CN) adults. Multiple logistic regression analyses confirmed the association between ERP variability in the target and non-target responses with MCI prevalence, independent of demographic and neuropsychological factors. DISCUSSION The unstable cognitive processing in the MCI group compared to the CN individuals implies abnormal neurological changes and reduced and (or) unstable attentional maintenance during cognitive processing. Consequently, utilizing ERP variability measures from a portable EEG device could serve as a valuable addition to the conventional ERP measures of latency and amplitude. This approach holds significant promise for identifying mild cognitive deficits and neural alterations in individuals with MCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Face memory impairment significantly affects social interactions and daily functioning in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). While deficits in recognizing familiar faces among individuals with MCI have been reported, their ability to learn and recognize unfamiliar faces remains unclear. This study examined the behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) of unfamiliar face memorization and recognition in MCI. METHODS Fifteen individuals with MCI and 15 healthy controls learned and recognized 90 unfamiliar neutral faces. Their performance accuracy and cortical ERPs were compared between the two groups across the learning and recognition phases. RESULTS Individuals with MCI had lower accuracy in identifying newly learned faces than healthy controls. Moreover, individuals with MCI had reduced occipitotemporal N170 and central vertex positive potential responses during both the learning and recognition phases, suggesting impaired initial face processing and attentional resources allocation. Also, individuals with MCI had reduced central N200 and frontal P300 responses during the recognition phase, suggesting impaired later-stage face recognition and attention engagement. CONCLUSION These findings provide neurobehavioral evidence for impaired learning and recognition of unfamiliar faces in individuals with MCI. SIGNIFICANCE Individuals with MCI may have face memory deficits in both early-stage face processing and later-stage recognition .

Abstract
Using event-related potentials (ERPs), this study examined the impact of reward expectations on working memory of emotional faces under different levels of cognitive load in a task combining the N-back paradigm and the reward expectation paradigm. The experiment involved presenting high- or low-reward cues followed by an N-back task for emotional faces with different loads. The accuracy results showed that under a high task load, both reward and emotion effects were significantly observed. However, these effects disappeared under a low task load. Analysis of the ERP data revealed that the early P2 and VPP components exhibited greater responses to fearful faces than to neutral faces. In the later stages, the P3 and LPP components showed greater reactions to high rewards than to low rewards. Additionally, the P2 component was found to be modulated by task load in relation to rewards, the EPN component demonstrated task load modulation with respect to emotions, and the N170 component showed an interaction effect between rewards and emotions. These findings imply that load regulates the reward effect and the emotional superiority effect in the process of working memory for emotional faces. In the cognitive processing of working memory, motivation and emotion jointly influence processing. Emotional factors have a greater impact in the early stage of processing, while motivation factors have a greater impact in the late stage of processing.

Abstract
Depressed individuals tend to use maladaptive emotion regulation strategies more frequently than non-depressed individuals while using adaptive strategies (e.g., reappraisal) less frequently. Objective neural markers of emotion regulation ability could aid in identifying youth at greatest risk for depression and functional impairment more broadly. We used electroencephalography to examine emotion regulation in adolescents (aged 14-17; N = 201) with current depression (n = 94) and without any history of depression (n = 107) at high (n = 54) and low (n = 53) risk for depression based on a maternal history of depression. Results revealed group differences in event-related potential markers of emotion regulation using multiple scoring approaches. Never-depressed adolescents had significant reductions in mean-activity and principal component analysis-identified late positive potential responses to dysphoric stimuli under reappraisal instructions compared to passive viewing. There was no significant difference in neural responses between conditions among depressed adolescents. The magnitude of the reappraisal effects appeared slightly stronger for low-risk adolescents relative to high-risk. Exploratory analyses further demonstrated that the association between neural markers of emotion regulation and overall functioning was moderated by age, such that impaired emotion regulation abilities predicted poorer functioning among older adolescents. Findings support the sensitivity of the late positive potential to emotion regulation impairments in depression and psychopathology more broadly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Objective measurements of executive functions using event-related potential (ERP) may be used as markers for differentiating healthy controls (HC) from patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). ERP is non-invasive, cost-effective, and affordable. Older adults with MCI demonstrate deteriorated executive function, serving as a potentially valid neurophysiological marker for identifying MCI. We aimed to review published ERP studies on executive function in older adults with MCI and summarize the performance differences by component between healthy older adults and older adults with MCI. METHODS Eight electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, American Psychological Association PsycNet, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and Ovid) were searched for the study. Articles published from January 1 to December 31, 2022, were considered for this review. A random-effects meta-analysis and between-study heterogeneity analysis were conducted using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis V3.0 software. RESULTS We identified 7829 articles of which 28 met the full inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review and analyses. Our pooled analysis suggested that participants with MCI can be differentiated from HC by significant P200, P300, and N200 latencies. The P100 and P300 amplitudes were significantly smaller in participants with MCI when compared with those in the HCs, and the patients with MCI showed increased N200 amplitudes. Our findings provide new insights into potential electrophysiological biomarkers for diagnosing MCI.

Abstract
People often do not accept criticism on their morality, especially when delivered by outgroup members. In two preregistered studies, we investigated whether people become more receptive to such negative feedback when feedback senders communicate their intention to help. Participants received negative feedback from ostensible others on their selfish (rather than altruistic) decisions in a donation task. We manipulated the identity of a feedback sender (ingroup vs. outgroup) and the intention that they provided for giving feedback. A sender either did not communicate any intentions, indicated the intention to help the feedback receiver improve, or communicated the intention to show moral superiority. We measured participants' self-reported responses to the feedback (Study 1, N = 44) and additionally recorded an EEG in Study 2 (N = 34). Results showed that when no intentions were communicated, participants assumed worse intentions from outgroup senders than ingroup senders (Study 1). However, group membership had no significant effect once feedback senders made their intentions explicit. Moreover, across studies, when feedback senders communicated their intention to help, participants perceived feedback as less unfair compared with when senders tried to convey their moral superiority. Complementing these results, exploratory event-related potential results of Study 2 suggested that communicating the intention to help reduced participants' attentional vigilance toward negative feedback messages on their morality (i.e., decreased P200 amplitudes). These results demonstrate the beneficial effects of communicating the intention to help when one tries to encourage others' moral growth through criticism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late preterm infants (LPIs) are at risk of neurodevelopmental delay. Research on their cognitive development is helpful for early intervention and follow-up. METHODS Event-related potential (ERP) and resting electroencephalography (RS-EEG) were used to study the brain cognitive function of LPIs in the early stage of life. The Gesell Developmental Scale (GDS) was used to track the neurodevelopmental status at the age of 1 year after correction, and to explore the neurophysiological indicators that could predict the outcome of cognitive development in the early stage. RESULTS The results showed that mismatch response (MMR) amplitude, RS-EEG power spectrum and functional connectivity all suggested that LPIs were lagging behind. At the age of 1 year after correction, high-risk LPIs showed no significant delay in gross motor function, but lagged behind in fine motor function, language, personal social interaction and adaptability. The ROC curve was used to evaluate the predictive role of MMR amplitude in the brain cognitive development prognosis at 1 year, showing a sensitivity of 80.00% and a specificity of 90.57%. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.788, with a P-value of 0.007. CONCLUSIONS Based on our findings we supposed that the cognitive function of LPI lags behind that of full-term infants in early life. Preterm birth and perinatal diseases or high risk factors affected brain cognitive function in LPIs. MMR amplitude can be used as an early predictor of brain cognitive development in LPIs. Abstract
The term "self-bias" refers to the human propensity to prioritize self- over other-related stimuli and is believed to influence various stages of the processing stream. By means of event-related potentials (ERPs), it was recently shown that the self-bias in a shape-label matching task modulates early as well as later phases of information processing in neurotypicals. Recent claims suggest autism-related deficits to specifically impact later stages of self-related processing; however, it is unclear whether these claims hold based on current findings. Using the shape-label matching task while recording ERPs in individuals with autism can clarify which stage of self-related processing is specifically affected in this condition. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the temporal course of self-related processing in adults with and without autism. Thirty-two adults with autism and 27 neurotypicals completed a shape-label matching task while ERPs were concomitantly recorded. At the behavioral level, results furnished evidence for a comparable self-bias across groups, with no differences in task performance between adults with and without autism. At the ERP level, the two groups showed a similar self-bias at early stages of self-related information processing (the N1 component). Conversely, the autism group manifested a lessened differentiation between self- and other-related stimuli at later stages (the parietal P3 component). In line with recent claims of later phases of self-related processing being altered in autism, we found an equivalent self-bias between groups at an early, sensory stage of processing, yet a strongly diminished self-bias at a later, cognitive stage in adults with autism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Simultaneous combinations of cognitive and physical exercises (cognitive-motor dual-task training [CMDT]) are more effective than physical and cognitive training alone in counteracting the decline of older adults and promoting physical and psychological well-being. The CMDT can be particularly effective in improving cognitive and functional abilities. Here, we validated an innovative nonpharmacologic intervention for anxiety and general well-being in older people by combining CMDT and response-generated feedback (RGF) principles. As outcomes, anxiety, cognitive functions, and functional mobility were evaluated. In addition, electroencephalographic methods were employed to investigate the neural basis of the possible intervention effects. METHODS Thirty older adults were divided into an experimental group trained using a CMDT + RGF protocol and a control group using the CMDT only. The CMDT + RGF consisted of the simultaneous execution of whole-body exercises, cognitive tasks that were realized using interactive devices, and continuous feedback on every response. RESULTS Results showed decreased anxiety and increased response speed in the experimental group, and both groups improved their functional ability and response accuracy after the intervention. According to electroencephalographic results, both groups showed an increase in the bilateral prefrontal cortex anticipatory activity, but the experimental group also showed a further increase in the left prefrontal cortex and in the premotor areas anticipatory functions. DISCUSSION This study confirms the effectiveness of the proposed intervention on anxiety by adopting a nonpharmacology treatment that could affect public and individual health costs by proposing an alternative approach to expensive medications and psychotherapy and could significantly improve older adults' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We interrogated auditory sensory memory capabilities in individuals with CLN3 disease (juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis), specifically for the feature of "duration" processing. Given decrements in auditory processing abilities associated with later-stage CLN3 disease, we hypothesized that the duration-evoked mismatch negativity (MMN) of the event related potential (ERP) would be a marker of progressively atypical cortical processing in this population, with potential applicability as a brain-based biomarker in clinical trials. METHODS We employed three stimulation rates (fast: 450 ms, medium: 900 ms, slow: 1800 ms), allowing for assessment of the sustainability of the auditory sensory memory trace. The robustness of MMN directly relates to the rate at which the regularly occurring stimulus stream is presented. As presentation rate slows, robustness of the sensory memory trace diminishes. By manipulating presentation rate, the strength of the sensory memory trace is parametrically varied, providing greater sensitivity to detect auditory cortical dysfunction. A secondary hypothesis was that duration-evoked MMN abnormalities in CLN3 disease would be more severe at slower presentation rates, resulting from greater demand on the sensory memory system. RESULTS Data from individuals with CLN3 disease (N = 21; range 6-28 years of age) showed robust MMN responses (i.e., intact auditory sensory memory processes) at the medium stimulation rate. However, at the fastest rate, MMN was significantly reduced, and at the slowest rate, MMN was not detectable in CLN3 disease relative to neurotypical controls (N = 41; ages 6-26 years). CONCLUSIONS Results reveal emerging insufficiencies in this critical auditory perceptual system in individuals with CLN3 disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study used event-related potential (ERP) and resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) approaches to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the emotional attention bias in patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID). METHODS Twenty-five patients with CID and thirty-three demographically matched healthy controls (HCs) completed clinical questionnaires and underwent electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. EEG analysis examined the group differences in terms of reaction times, P3 amplitudes, event-related spectral perturbations, and inter-trial phase synchrony. Subsequently, seed-based rs-FC analysis of the amygdala nuclei (including the central-medial amygdala [CMA] and basolateral amygdala [BLA]) was performed. The relationship between P3 amplitude, rs-FC and clinical symptom severity in patients with CID was further investigated by correlation analysis. RESULTS CID patients exhibited shorter reaction times than HCs in both standard and deviant stimuli, with the abnormalities becoming more pronounced as attention allocation increased. Compared to HCs, ERP analysis revealed increased P3 amplitude, theta wave power, and inter-trial synchrony in CID patients. The rs-FC analysis showed increased connectivity of the BLA-occipital pole, CMA-precuneus, and CMA-angular gyrus and decreased connectivity of the CMA-thalamus in CID patients. Notably, correlation analysis of the EEG and fMRI measurements showed a significant positive correlation between the P3 amplitude and the rs-FC of the CMA-PCU. CONCLUSION This study confirms an emotional attention bias in CID, specifically in the neural mechanisms of attention processing that vary depending on the allocation of attentional resources. Abnormal connectivity in the emotion-cognition networks may constitute the neural basis of the abnormal scalp activation pattern.

Abstract
The attention networks test (ANT) is frequently utilized to evaluate executive, alerting, and orienting attentional components. Additionally, it serves as an activation task in neuroimaging studies. This study aimed to examine the relationship between attention networks and brain electrophysiology. The study enrolled 40 right-handed male students (age = 20.8 ± 1.3 years) who underwent the revised attention network test, while their electroencephalogram signals were recorded. The study aimed to explore the effects of attention networks and their efficiencies on brain electrophysiology. The results indicated that the P3 amplitude was modulated by the conflict effect in the central (p-value = 0.014) and parietal (p-value = 0.002) regions. The orienting component significantly influenced P1 and N1 latencies in the parietal and parieto-occipital regions (p-values < 0.006), as well as P1 and N1 amplitude in the parieto-occipital region (p-values = 0.017 and 0.011). The alerting component significantly affected P1 latency and amplitude in the parietal and parieto-occipital regions, respectively (p-value = 0.02). Furthermore, N1 amplitude and the time interval between P1 and N1 were significantly correlated with the efficiency of alerting and orienting networks. In terms of connectivity, the coherence of theta and alpha bands significantly decreased in the incongruent condition compared to the congruent condition. Additionally, the effects of attention networks on event-related spectral perturbation were observed. The study revealed the influence of attention networks on various aspects of brain electrophysiology. Specifically, the alerting score correlated with the amplitude of the N1 component in the double-cue and no-cue conditions in the parieto-occipital region, while the orienting score in the same region correlated with the N1 amplitude in the valid cue condition and the difference in N1 amplitude between the valid cue and double-cue conditions. Overall, empirical evidence suggests that attention networks not only impact the amplitudes of electrophysiological activities but also influence their time course.

Abstract
Background/objective A neurocognitive model of distancing has systematically identified a set of brain regions that support the control mechanisms for emotion regulation (ER). However, the temporal dynamics of these control mechanisms during ER remains unclear. Method To address this issue, we recorded behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG) data to compare proactive and reactive ER modes in an adapted ER task (N = 30 adults). In different ER modes, participants were instructed to downregulate their negative emotional experiences by applying the reappraisal tactic of distancing. Results The behavioral results showed that proactive ER, which involves preparing for the upcoming regulation, reduced the negative emotional experience more than reactive ER, which involves no preparation process, in the reappraisal-negative condition. This indicated that proactive ER was more effective than reactive ER in regulating negative emotions. Event-related potential (ERP) and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) results showed that ER through distancing involved two phases: First, the reappraisal cue enhanced the allocation of attention to activate the mental building blocks and constructed a new perspective in the preparation process. Second, participants who benefited from the preparation process initiated the ER earlier and adaptively re-engaged in the ER if time permitted. Conclusions Taken together, the control mechanisms underlying the preparation process influence the timing of ER, while the control mechanisms underlying the regulation process determine the regulatory effect.

Abstract
Omitted stimulus potentials (OSPs) occur when a sensory stimulus is unexpectedly omitted. They are thought to reflect predictions about upcoming sensory events. The present study examined how OSPs differ across the sensory modalities of predicted stimuli. Twenty-nine university students were asked to press a mouse button at a regular interval of 1-2 s, which was immediately followed by either a visual or auditory stimulus in different blocks. The stimuli were sometimes omitted (p = 0.2), to which event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. The results showed that stimulus omissions in both modalities elicited ERP waveforms consisting of three components, oN1, oN2, and oP3. The peak latencies of these components were shorter in the auditory modality than in the visual modality. The amplitudes of OSPs were larger when participants were told that the omission indicated their poor performance (i.e., they pressed a button at an irregular interval) than when it was irrelevant to their performance. These findings suggest that OSPs occur from around 100 ms in a modality-specific manner and increase in amplitude depending on the task relevance of stimulus omissions.

Abstract
Both acute aerobic (AE) and resistance exercise (RE) have been acknowledged to be effective methods in enhancing executive function and brain-related P3 amplitudes. Nevertheless, the effect of acute concurrent exercise training (CET), combining both AE and RE, on executive function remains subject to speculation. Moreover, investigation of the mechanisms that underlie improvements in executive function would facilitate scientific understanding. Notably, lactate has emerged as a candidate among several potential mechanisms. Therefore, the main aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of acute CET on the cognitive flexibility dimension of executive function using behavioural and neuro-electric measures. A secondary aim was to determine the mediating effect of blood lactate in the acute exercise-executive function relationship. Seventy-eight young adults (38 women, 40 men; 22.8 ± 1.8 years) were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: CET, AE, or reading control (RC). Cognitive flexibility was evaluated using the Task-Switching Test and its derived electroencephalography (EEG) was assessed immediately prior to and following each treatment. Fingertip lactate assays were taken prior to, at the midpoint, and after each treatment. Both acute CET and AE shortened response time regardless of test conditions when compared to the RC group. Greater P3 amplitude was observed following CET in the heterogeneous condition and under AE in the switch condition. A significant mediation of blood lactate for response time emerged in both the CET and AE groups for the heterogeneous and switch conditions. The blood lactate mediation was not reflected in P3 amplitude. The present findings suggest that acute CET leads to positive behavioural and neuro-electric alterations of cognitive flexibility, and its effect is similar to AE. Additionally, blood lactate serves as a mediator of the effects of acute exercise on executive function from a behavioural, but not neuro-electric standpoint.

Abstract
Cognitive theories propose that social anxiety disorder involves heightened attention to anxious arousal symptoms due to worries that they may evoke rejection from others. Supporting this, studies have shown that social anxiety is related to greater attention to representations of anxious arousal and to anxiety sensitivity social concerns, which refers to sensitivity to feelings of anxious arousal during social situations. However, this has not yet been tested using neural indices of attention to images depicting anxious arousal. To examine these associations, the current study examined early and sustained attentional bias to anxious arousal images using the P2 and the late positive potential (LPP), respectively. Electroencephalogram data were collected while a non-clinical sample of undergraduate students (N = 106) viewed images of people exhibiting anxious arousal in addition to blocks of negative and neutral images from the IAPS. The neural response to anxious arousal images was isolated using residual scores (e.g., using linear regression to predict the P2 elicited by anxious arousal images from the P2 elicited by neutral images (P2neutral→AA) or negative images (P2negative→AA), then saving the unstandardized residuals). There was an indirect effect of the P2neutral→AA and P2negative→AA waveforms that was explained by anxiety sensitivity social concerns. Additionally, there was an indirect effect of both LPP waveforms on social anxiety symptoms during the early time window of the LPP (400-700 ms). At the later time window of the LPP (700-1000 ms), there was an indirect effect of the LPPneutral→AA residual waveform, but not the LPPnegative→AA, on social anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amplitude reduction of mismatch negativity (MMN), an event-related potential component indexing NMDA receptor-dependent auditory echoic memory and predictive coding, is widely replicated in schizophrenia. Time-frequency analyses of single-trial electroencephalography epochs suggest that theta oscillation abnormalities underlie MMN deficits in schizophrenia. However, this has received less attention in early schizophrenia (ESZ). METHODS Patients with ESZ (n = 89), within 5 years of illness onset, and healthy control subjects (n = 105) completed an electroencephalography MMN paradigm (duration-deviant, pitch-deviant, duration + pitch double-deviant). Repeated measures analyses of variance assessed group differences in MMN, theta intertrial phase coherence (ITC), and theta total power from frontocentral electrodes, after normal age adjustment. Group differences were retested after covarying MMN and theta measures. RESULTS Relative to healthy control subjects, patients with ESZ showed auditory deviance deficits. Patients with ESZ had MMN deficits for duration-deviants (p = .041), pitch-deviants (ps = .007), and double-deviants (ps < .047). Patients with ESZ had reduced theta ITC for standards (ps < .040) and duration-deviants (ps < .030). Furthermore, patients with ESZ had reduced theta power across deviants at central electrodes (p = .013). MMN group deficits were not fully accounted for by theta ITC and power, and neither were theta ITC group deficits fully accounted for by MMN. Group differences in theta total power were no longer significant after covarying for MMN. CONCLUSIONS Patients with ESZ showed reduced MMN and theta total power for all deviant types. Theta ITC showed a relatively specific reduction for duration-deviants. Although MMN and theta ITC were correlated in ESZ, covarying for one did not fully account for deficits in the other, raising the possibility of their sensitivity to dissociable pathophysiological processes.

Abstract
Non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on an event-related potential (ERP) component, P300, elicited via the oddball paradigm, have been extensively developed to enable device control and communication. While most P300-based BCIs employ visual stimuli in the oddball paradigm, auditory P300-based BCIs also need to be developed for users with unreliable gaze control or limited visual processing. Specifically, auditory BCIs without additional visual support or multi-channel sound sources can broaden the application areas of BCIs. This study aimed to design optimal stimuli for auditory BCIs among artificial (e.g., beep) and natural (e.g., human voice and animal sounds) sounds in such circumstances. In addition, it aimed to investigate differences between auditory and visual stimulations for online P300-based BCIs. As a result, natural sounds led to both higher online BCI performance and larger differences in ERP amplitudes between the target and non-target compared to artificial sounds. However, no single type of sound offered the best performance for all subjects; rather, each subject indicated different preferences between the human voice and animal sound. In line with previous reports, visual stimuli yielded higher BCI performance (average 77.56%) than auditory counterparts (average 54.67%). In addition, spatiotemporal patterns of the differences in ERP amplitudes between target and non-target were more dynamic with visual stimuli than with auditory stimuli. The results suggest that selecting a natural auditory stimulus optimal for individual users as well as making differences in ERP amplitudes between target and non-target stimuli more dynamic may further improve auditory P300-based BCIs. Abstract
The Cyberball is the most commonly employed paradigm for the investigation of the effects of social exclusion, also called ostracism. The analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs), short-term stimulus-induced fluctuations in the EEG signal, has been employed for the identification of time-sensitive neural responses to ostracism-related information. Changes in ERPs during the Cyberball are normally attributed to the effect of ostracism, but it has been argued that characteristics of the paradigm, not ostracism, are the driving force for these changes. To elucidate the origin of the ERP changes in the Cyberball, we systematically reviewed the Cyberball-ERP literature of healthy, adult populations, and evaluated whether the social context of ostracism or characteristics of the paradigm are better suited for the explanation of the found results. Our results show that for many components no clear origin can be identified, but that expectancy violations, not ostracism, best explains the results of the P3 complex. Future research should therefore also employ other paradigms for the research into the effects of ostracism on ERPs.

Abstract
Objective : The acoustic stimulation in consciousness patients may improve the diagnosis assessment and the effectiveness of rehabilitation procedures. We aimed to investigate the event-related potential (ERP) response to emotional auditory stimuli in comatose patients. Methods : We measured the nonlinear and linear electroencephalogram (EEG) features, prepared the acoustic analysis of stimuli parameters, and assessed the subjective emotional rates of stimuli characteristics. Results : Patients with better outcomes had recognizable ERP responses and significant changes of the nonlinear EEG features to emotional sounds, unlike patients with worse outcomes. The response of comatose patients was attributed to acoustical features of emotional sounds, whereas the EEG response of healthy subjects was associated with their subjective feelings. The comatose patients demonstrated the variable EEG activity for neutral and emotional sounds. Conclusion : Thus, the EEG reactivity followed the better outcome of comatose patients to emotional stimuli. The study assumed the substantial differences of emotional stimuli perception in the healthy and unconscious brain.

Abstract
The deleterious effects of sleep loss on sleep-dependent memory and emotional function have been documented in the current literature. Yet, the effects of insomnia-induced chronic sleep disturbance on emotional short-term memory have been scarcely investigated. Twenty-one participants with subclinical insomnia disorder (SID) and 20 healthy participants (healthy control, HC) performed a delayed recognition task of emotional faces, and event-related potentials (ERPs) involved in memory encoding, retention, and retrieval of faces across different emotional valences were assessed. Behavioral findings revealed that participants in the SID group had a larger response bias, being more likely to perceive negative faces as "old" faces presented in the retrieval phase than those in the HC group. ERP findings revealed that emotional faces in the SID vs. HC group induced significantly smaller P1 and late P3b and larger N170 amplitudes in the encoding phase and smaller negative slow wave (NSW) in the retention phase. In retrieval phase, the interaction between Sleep group and Valence were revealed for P1 and early P3b amplitudes, but no group differences were found after Bonferroni correction. These findings suggested that insomnia induced chronic sleep disturbance would influence performance on emotional working memory and induced processing phase specific regulation of neurophysiology in emotional working memory regardless of valence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There was a high comorbidity rate of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), showing a poor prognosis and significant detrimental impact on functioning. The study aimed to find whether patients with comorbid GAD and MDD had some differences in cognitive functions from patients with MDD or GAD alone. METHODS 360 adult patients were enrolled from inpatient department of psychiatry from 2020 to 2022. They were divided into three groups with 120 patients for each group: MDD, GAD, and MDD + GAD. All the patients completed psychological evaluation scales including patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and 7-item generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7). All the patients underwent examinations of auditory brainstem response and event-related potentials (ERPs). RESULTS In MDD + GAD group, P3b latency was significantly longer than patients with MDD alone, and P300 reaction time was positively correlated with total score of GAD-7 and PHQ-9, and PHQ-9 total score was also significantly positively correlated with P2-P3b amplitude (all p < 0.05). In addition, MDD patients had significantly longer P300 reaction time and lower P2-P3b amplitude than the GAD group (p < 0.05). LIMITATIONS It was a single-center and cross-sectional study, and we used self-report scales as assessment tools. CONCLUSIONS Patients with MDD and GAD comorbidity might have a worse cognitive function than MDD patients, and the severity of cognitive impairments was positively correlated with the severity of anxiety and depression symptoms.

The ability of attentional orienting has been suggested to keep developing throughout childhood. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies have shown that 6-10 year old children exhibit lateralized alpha-band (8-13 Hz) activity and event-related potentials (ERPs) that are classic markers of spatial attentional orienting in adults. However, the lack of a direct comparison of these EEG correlates between children and adults in the same experiment made it difficult to evaluate developmental effects on neural activity throughout attentional stages. This study aimed to directly compare cue-related alpha activity and ERPs for the anticipatory attention stage and target-related ERPs for the target processing stage between healthy children and adults. Participants, including 19 children (6-10 years) and 23 adults (18-34 years), successfully completed a visual spatial attention task, although children responded more slowly and less consistently than adults. Both age groups exhibited significant cue-related alpha lateralization and ERPs (EDAN, ADAN, and LDAP) during anticipatory attention and significant attentional modulation of target-related N1 during target processing. However, no significant difference was found in the magnitude of attentional modulation of these EEG correlates between children and adults. These findings suggest that the neural underpinnings of anticipatory attention and target processing during visual spatial attention could have been largely developed in 6-10 year old children.

Abstract
In music and language domains, it has been suggested that patterned transitions of sounds can be acquired implicitly through statistical learning. Previous studies have investigated the statistical learning of auditory regularities by recording early neural responses to a sequence of tones presented at high or low transition probabilities. However, it remains unclear whether the statistical learning of musical chord transitions is reflected in endogenous, regularity-dependent components of the event-related potential (ERP). The present study aimed to record the mismatch negativity (MMN) elicited by chord transitions that deviated from newly learned transitional regularities. Chords were generated in a novel 18 equal temperament pitch class scale to avoid interference from the existing tonal representations of the 12 equal temperament pitch class system. Thirty-six adults without professional musical training listened to a sequence of randomly inverted chords in which certain chords were presented with high (standard) or low (deviant) transition probabilities. An irrelevant timbre change detection task was assigned to make them attend to the sequence during the ERP recording. After that, a familiarity test was administered in which the participants were asked to choose the more familiar chord sequence out of two successive sequences. The results showed that deviant transitions elicited the MMN, although the participants could not recognize the standard transition beyond the level of chance. These findings suggest that humans can statistically learn new transitional regularities of chords in a novel musical scale, even though they did not recognize them explicitly. This study provides further evidence that music-syntactic regularities can be acquired implicitly through statistical learning.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of craving and attention bias towards drug cues is theorized to operate cooperatively, owing to the principles of associative learning. In this context, the conditioned response to drug-related stimuli activates reward mechanisms within the brain, consequently inducing craving and fostering the underlying mechanisms that contribute to relapse in individuals with substance use disorders. Multiple studies have assessed the relationship between attention to substance-related cues and subjective craving through electroencephalography (EEG), but their findings have yet to be synthesized and examined. This review summarizes the association between the amplitude of the P300 event-related potential (ERP) and substance use craving, compares discrepancies in results by type of substance, and discusses gaps in the literature to inform future research. METHODS A systematic search was conducted on Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsychINFO databases. Studies were published in English and included peer-reviewed human research investigating the relationship between EEG P300 ERP and self-reported substance use craving. The included study samples comprised of in treatment or non-treatment-seeking participants who use substances. The primary outcomes of interest were those derived from inferential statistics assessing P300 amplitude and substance use craving. RESULTS Ten studies were included in the final search and were organized by substance type: three alcohol, three cocaine, two tobacco, one heroin, and one cannabis. Results were mixed for alcohol and cocaine. Studies on tobacco, heroin, and cannabis use were congruent for associations between the P300 amplitude and craving. CONCLUSIONS Overall findings are mixed between studies addressing the association of the EEG P300 amplitude and craving. These results should be considered in the context of the limited sample size, underpowered analyses, and methodological differences that potentially contribute to discrepancies in outcomes. Further research is required to assess the role of craving assessment, EEG methodology, and substance-related factors on the association between P300 amplitude and self-reported craving.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have shown that anticipatory anhedonia is linked to abnormal reward processing. The present study aimed to explore the underlying neural mechanism of the influence of anticipatory anhedonia symptoms on reward processing. METHODS Electrophysiological activities in the anticipatory and consummatory phase were recorded during the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task in 24 depressed high anticipatory anhedonia (HAA) patients, 25 depressed low anticipatory anhedonia (LAA) patients, and 29 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS We suggested a significant condition × group interaction effect on feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitudes during the consummatory phase, a smaller FRN in reward cue trails compared with neutral cue trail was revealed in the HC and LAA group, but such reward-related effect was not found in the HAA group. In addition, we found significant correlations between FRN, fb-P3 and cue-N1, cue-N2 in the HC group, besides, significant correlations between FRN, fb-P3 and cue-P2 was also revealed in the HC and LAA group. However, no significant correlation was found in HAA patients. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the link between the anticipatory and consummatory phase was interrupted in depressed HAA patients, which may be driven by the aberrant consummatory reward processing. SIGNIFICANCE The current study is the first one to demonstrate the influence of anticipatory anhedonia symptom on the association between anticipatory and consummatory phase of reward process.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated the potential of machine learning (ML) in classifying physical pain from non-pain states using electroencephalographic (EEG) data. However, the application of ML to EEG data to categorise the observation of pain versus non-pain images of human facial expressions or scenes depicting pain being inflicted has not been explored. The present study aimed to address this by training Random Forest (RF) models on cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded while participants passively viewed faces displaying either pain or neutral expressions, as well as action scenes depicting pain or matched non-pain (neutral) scenarios. Ninety-one participants were recruited across three samples, which included a model development group (n = 40) and a cross-subject validation group (n = 51). Additionally, 25 participants from the model development group completed a second experimental session, providing a within-subject temporal validation sample. The analysis of ERPs revealed an enhanced N170 component in response to faces compared to action scenes. Moreover, an increased late positive potential (LPP) was observed during the viewing of pain scenes compared to neutral scenes. Additionally, an enhanced P3 response was found when participants viewed faces displaying pain expressions compared to neutral expressions. Subsequently, three RF models were developed to classify images into faces and scenes, neutral and pain scenes, and neutral and pain expressions. The RF model achieved classification accuracies of 75%, 64%, and 69% for cross-validation, cross-subject, and within-subject classifications, respectively, along with reasonably calibrated predictions for the classification of face versus scene images. However, the RF model was unable to classify pain versus neutral stimuli above chance levels when presented with subsequent tasks involving images from either category. These results expand upon previous findings by externally validating the use of ML in classifying ERPs related to different categories of visual images, namely faces and scenes. The results also indicate the limitations of ML in distinguishing pain and non-pain connotations using ERP responses to the passive viewing of visually similar images.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has been a prolonged period of stress due to social isolation, illness, death, and other major life disruptions. Neural reward sensitivity, essential for healthy functioning, may become reduced under major naturalistic stressors, though few studies have examined this. The present study sought to test whether neural responses to rewards were significantly blunted by the stress of the pandemic. METHODS We compared 2 groups of young adult participants, who completed a monetary reward task while an electroencephalogram was recorded, at 2 time points, 1 to 3 years apart. Our measure of reward sensitivity was the reward positivity (RewP), a neural marker enhanced to gain relative to loss feedback. The magnitude of the RewP is sensitive to stress exposure and can prospectively predict depression. The pre-pandemic group (n = 41) completed both time points before the pandemic, while the pandemic group (n = 39) completed the baseline visit before the pandemic and the follow-up visit during its second year. RESULTS The pandemic group reported having experienced significant stressors over the course of the pandemic. We did not observe a significant decrease in the RewP from baseline to follow-up in the pre-pandemic group. In contrast, in the pandemic group, the RewP was significantly blunted at the follow-up visit to the extent that it no longer distinguished gain from loss feedback. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that prolonged naturalistic stressors can result in adaptations in neural responses to rewards. Our findings also highlight a possible mechanism linking stress to the development of depression.

Abstract
Positive valence systems are disrupted in late-life depression and in individuals at risk for suicide. The reward positivity (RewP) is an event-related potential measure of positive valence system function that relates to depression and anhedonia in children and young adults. However, it is unclear whether a reliable RewP signal can be elicited in middle-aged and older adults at high risk for suicide and, if so, whether this signal is similarly associated with clinical symptoms. In the current study, a RewP was elicited with a standard gambling task in middle-aged and older adults (N = 31) at discharge from a hospitalization for suicidal thought or behaviors. The resulting electrocortical response differed significantly for monetary wins compared to losses. Internal reliability of the RewP and the feedback negativity (FN) to monetary loss was good to excellent. Internal reliability of difference measures was lower but still largely acceptable, with residualized differences scores demonstrating stronger reliability than subtraction-based scores. A smaller residualized RewP, after accounting for the influence of the FN, was associated with greater severity of lassitude, an index of appetitive anhedonia. These findings set the groundwork for future studies of positive valence system function and depression in middle-aged and older adults at high risk for suicide.

Abstract
An elevated P3a amplitude to trauma-related stimuli is strongly associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet little is known about whether this response to trauma-related stimuli is affected by treatment that decreases PTSD symptoms. As an analysis of secondary outcome measures from a randomized controlled trial, we investigated the latency and amplitude changes of the P3a in responses in a three-condition oddball visual task that included trauma-related (combat scenes) and trauma-unrelated (threatening animals) distractors. Fifty-five U.S. veterans diagnosed with combat-related PTSD were randomized to receive either active or sham repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). All received cognitive processing therapy, CPT+A, which requires a written account of the index trauma. They were tested before and 6 months after protocol completion. P3a amplitude and response time decreases were driven largely by the changes in the responses to the trauma-related stimuli, and this decrease correlated to the decrease in PTSD symptoms. The amplitude changes were greater in those who received rTMS + CPT than in those who received sham rTMS + CPT, suggesting that rTMS plays beneficial role in reducing arousal and threat bias, which may allow for more effective engagement in trauma-focused PTSD treatment.

Abstract
Interoception has been proposed as a factor that influences various psychological processes (Khalsa et al., 2018). Afferent signals from the cardiovascular system vary across cardiac cycle phases. Heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEP) and event-related potentials (ERP) were measured to examine whether interoceptive signals differed between cardiac cycle phases. Simultaneously, participants performed an auditory oddball task in which the timing of the presenting stimulus was synchronized with the heartbeat. Pure tones were presented at 10 ms (late diastole condition), 200 ms (systole condition), or 500 ms after the R wave (diastole condition). Greater HEP amplitudes were observed when the tone was presented during diastole than during systole or late diastole. ERP showed the same tendency: a greater amplitude was observed during diastole than systole or late diastole. These results suggest that the processing of interoception reflected by HEP and exteroception reflected by ERP share attentional resources when both stimuli coincide. When the tone was presented during systole, attention to the internal state decreased compared with when the tone was presented during diastole, and attention was distributed to both exteroception and interoception. Our study suggests that HEP may be considered an indication of a relative amount of resources to process the interoception.

Abstract
The posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) has been implicated in the integration of auditory feedback and motor system for controlling vocal production. However, the question as to whether and how the pSTG is causally involved in vocal feedback control is currently unclear. To this end, the present study selectively stimulated the left or right pSTG with continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) in healthy participants, then used event-related potentials to investigate neurobehavioral changes in response to altered auditory feedback during vocal pitch regulation. The results showed that, compared to control (vertex) stimulation, c-TBS over the right pSTG led to smaller vocal compensations for pitch perturbations accompanied by smaller cortical N1 and larger P2 responses. Enhanced P2 responses received contributions from the right-lateralized temporal and parietal regions as well as the insula, and were significantly correlated with suppressed vocal compensations. Surprisingly, these effects were not found when comparing c-TBS over the left pSTG with control stimulation. Our findings provide evidence, for the first time, that supports a causal relationship between right, but not left, pSTG and auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation. This lends support to a right-lateralized contribution of the pSTG in not only the bottom-up detection of vocal feedback errors but also the involvement of driving motor commands for error correction in a top-down manner.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between aerobic fitness and cognitive control, the ability to inhibit distractions (conflict control) or impulsive actions (response inhibition). However, it is unknown whether these sub-processes and their underlying information processing capacity are differentially related to aerobic fitness. To address this question, we employed a go/no-go version of the redundant-target task, which was administered concurrently with the recording of event-related potentials (ERPs) and the use of a reaction-time based diagnostic tool known as system factorial technology (SFT). Our sample consisted of 46 young male adults with varying levels of aerobic fitness: the high-fit group (n = 23; aged 21.33 ± 2.44 years; VO2max 58.83 ± 6.93 ml/kg/min) and the low-fit group (n = 23; aged 22.30 ± 1.40 years; VO2max 41.90 ± 4.01 ml/kg/min). The results showed that the high-fit group exhibited a lower false-alarm rate compared to the low-fit group. However, there was no difference in processing speed between the two groups. The SFT analysis revealed that the high-fit group had more efficient information processing for earlier responses, but not later responses, compared to the low-fit group. Analysis of the ERPs indicated that the high-fit group had larger N2d amplitudes and shorter P3d latencies during conflict control compared to the low-fit group, while there were no such effects for the process of response inhibition. These findings suggest that aerobic fitness may be differentially related to the temporal dynamics and sub-processes of cognitive control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are becoming a reality, there is an urgent need to select cost-effective tools that can accurately identify patients in the earliest stages of the disease. Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) is a condition in which individuals complain of cognitive decline with normal performances on neuropsychological evaluation. Many studies demonstrated a higher prevalence of Alzheimer's pathology in patients diagnosed with SCD as compared to the general population. Consequently, SCD was suggested as an early symptomatic phase of AD. We will describe the study protocol of a prospective cohort study (PREVIEW) that aim to identify features derived from easily accessible, cost-effective and non-invasive assessment to accurately detect SCD patients who will progress to AD dementia. METHODS We will include patients who self-referred to our memory clinic and are diagnosed with SCD. Participants will undergo: clinical, neurologic and neuropsychological examination, estimation of cognitive reserve and depression, evaluation of personality traits, APOE and BDNF genotyping, electroencephalography and event-related potential recording, lumbar puncture for measurement of Aβ42, t-tau, and p-tau concentration and Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio. Recruited patients will have follow-up neuropsychological examinations every two years. Collected data will be used to train a machine learning algorithm to define the risk of being carriers of AD and progress to dementia in patients with SCD. DISCUSSION This is the first study to investigate the application of machine learning to predict AD in patients with SCD. Since all the features we will consider can be derived from non-invasive and easily accessible assessments, our expected results may provide evidence for defining cost-effective and globally scalable tools to estimate the risk of AD and address the needs of patients with memory complaints. In the era of DMTs, this will have crucial implications for the early identification of patients suitable for treatment in the initial stages of AD. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER (TRN) NCT05569083.

Abstract
Improving information transfer rate is a key to prompt the speed of outputting instructions of the event-related potential-based brain-computer interface. Our previous study designed a dual-stimuli interface that simultaneously presents two types of different stimuli to improve the speed. While, adding more stimuli into this interface makes subject easily affected by "flanker effect" that decreases the accuracy of recognizing intention. To achieve high recognition accuracy with many stimuli, this study proposes a dual stimuli interface based on whole flash and local move (DS-WL) and two rules of stimulus arrangement to induce the brain signals. Twenty subjects participated in the experiment, and their signals are recognized by a back propagation neural network classifier. The local move induces larger and later signals of targets to help discriminate the two kinds of stimuli; the rules reduce the N200 and P300 amplitudes of non-target, which improves accuracy. This study demonstrates that the DS-WL is a useful way to shorten the instruction output cycle and speed up the instructions outputting by local move and rules.

Abstract
Metaphors commonly represent mental representations of abstract concepts. One example is the valence-space metaphor (i.e., positive word-up, negative word-down), which suggests that the vertical position of positive/negative words can modulate the evaluation of word valence. Here, the spatial Stroop task and electroencephalography (EEG) techniques were used to explore the neural mechanism of the valence-space congruency effect in valence-space metaphors. This study showed that the reaction time of the congruent condition (i.e., positive words at the top and negative words at the bottom of the screen) was significantly shorter than that of the incongruent condition (i.e., positive words at the bottom and negative words at the top of the screen), while the accuracy rate of the congruent condition was significantly larger than that of the incongruent condition. The analysis of the amplitudes of event-related potential components revealed that congruency between the vertical position and valence of Chinese words could significantly modulate the amplitude of attention allocation-related P2 component and semantic violations related N400 component. Moreover, statistical tests conducted on the post-stimulus inter-trial phase coherence (ITPC) found that the ITPC value of an alpha band region of interest (8-12 Hz, 100-300 ms post-stimulus) in the time-frequency plane of the congruent condition was significantly larger than that of the incongruent condition. Above all, the current study proved the existence of the space-valence congruency effect in Chinese words and provided some interesting neurophysiological mechanisms regarding the valence-space metaphor.

Abstract
Neural coding of auditory stimulus frequency is well-documented; however, the cortical signals and perceptual correlates of pitch have not yet been comprehensively investigated. This study examined the temporal patterns of event-related potentials (ERP) in response to single tones of pitch chroma, with an assumption that these patterns would be more prominent in musically-trained individuals than in non-musically-trained individuals. Participants with and without musical training (N = 20) were presented with seven notes on the C major scale (C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, and B4), and whole-brain activities were recorded. A linear regression analysis between the ERP amplitude and the seven notes showed that the ERP amplitude increased or decreased as the frequency of the pitch increased. Remarkably, these linear correlations were anti-symmetric between the hemispheres. Specifically, we found that ERP amplitudes of the left and right frontotemporal areas decreased and increased, respectively, as the pitch frequency increased. Although linear slopes were significant in both groups, the musically-trained group exhibited marginally steeper slope, and their ERP amplitudes were most discriminant for frequency of tone of pitch at earlier latency than in the non-musically-trained group (~ 460 ms vs ~ 630 ms after stimulus onset). Thus, the ERP amplitudes in frontotemporal areas varied according to the pitch frequency, with the musically-trained participants demonstrating a wider range of amplitudes and inter-hemispheric anti-symmetric patterns. Our findings may provide new insights on cortical processing of musical pitch, revealing anti-symmetric processing of musical pitch between hemispheres, which appears to be more pronounced in musically-trained people. Abstract
Overgeneralisation is one of the aetiologies of anxiety disorders and is closely associated with elevated intolerance of uncertainty (IU) levels. However, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Considering the inconsistency of previous results and the high sensitivity of IU to uncertainty, the present study investigated the effect of IU on threat generalisation in predictable and unpredictable conditions. We compared self-reported unconditioned stimuli (US) expectancy and event-related potentials (ERPs) during generalisation in high IU (n = 34) and low IU (n = 35) participants. The results indicated that high IU was associated with higher US expectancy for generalisation stimuli (GS) than with low IU. At the electrophysiological level, compared to low IU, high IU showed increased P1 to ambiguous GS as well as decreased early late positive potential (LPP) to GS in unpredictable conditions, and no differential response to GS in late LPP in predictable conditions. These findings suggest that IU enhances threat generalisation and may be related to increased early automatic attention to ambiguous stimulus and inadequate late elaborate processing in a high uncertainty context. These findings might contribute to the treatment of mood disorders characterized by high IU.

Abstract
Reversal learning is a crucial aspect of behavioral flexibility that plays a significant role in environmental adaptation and development. While previous studies have established a link between anxiety and impaired reversal learning ability, the underlying mechanisms behind this association remain unclear. This study employed a probabilistic reversal learning task with electroencephalographic recording to investigate these mechanisms. Participants were divided into two groups based on their scores on Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory: high trait-anxiety (HTA) and low trait-anxiety (LTA), consisting of 50 individuals in each group. The results showed that the HTA group had poorer reversal learning performance than the LTA group, including a lower tendency to shift to the new optimal option after rule reversals (reversal-shift). The study also examined event-related potentials elicited by reversals and found that although the N1 (related to attention allocation), feedback-related negativity (FRN: related to belief updating), and P3 (related to response inhibition) were all sensitive to the grouping factor, only the FRN elicited by reversal-shift mediated the relationship between anxiety and the number/reaction time of reversal-shift. From these findings, we suggest that abnormalities in belief updating may contribute to the impaired reversal learning performance observed in anxious individuals. In our opinion, this study sheds light on potential targets for interventions aimed at improving behavioral flexibility in anxious individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Determine the acute effect of high-intensity interval training as an alternative of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on behavioral and neuroelectric measures of inhibitory control in preadolescent children. DESIGN A randomized controlled trial. METHODS Seventy-seven children (8-10 years) were randomly assigned to three groups to complete a modified flanker task to measure behavioral and neuroelectric (N2/P3 of event-related potential and frontal theta oscillations) outcomes of inhibitory control before and after a 20-min session of high-intensity interval training (N = 27), moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (N = 25), and sedentary reading activity (N = 25). RESULTS The accuracy of the inhibitory control performance improved over time across three groups but response time was selectively improved only for the high-intensity interval training group. Analysis on N2 showed a time-related decrease in N2 latency selectively for the high-intensity interval training but not the other groups. Analysis on P3 showed a time-related decrease in P3 amplitude for the sedentary and high-intensity interval training groups while the moderate-intensity aerobic exercise group exhibited maintained P3 amplitude from the pretest to the posttest and a larger P3 amplitude compared with the high-intensity interval training group at the posttest. While there was evidence of conflict-induced modulation of frontal theta oscillations, such an effect was unaffected by exercise interventions. CONCLUSIONS A single bout of high-intensity interval training has facilitating effects on the processing speed involving inhibitory control in preadolescent children but not neuroelectric index of attention allocation that only benefited from moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.

Abstract
Ostracism-being intentionally excluded-is painful, and when experienced vicariously, it elicits self-reported and neural responses correlated with compassion. This study examined event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to vicarious ostracism in a computer-simulated ball-toss game, called Cyberball. Participants observed three ostensible players at other universities play two rounds of Cyberball; in the first round all players were included, but in the second, one player was ostracized. After the game, participants reported their compassion and wrote emails to the ostracism victim and perpetrators, coded for prosociality and harm. Condition differences in exclusion versus inclusion throws emerged in a frontal negative-going peak between 108 and 230ms, and in a posterior long-latency positive-going deflection between 548 to 900ms. It is believed the former reflects the feedback error related negativity component (fERN) and the latter the late positive potential (LPP). The fERN was not associated with self-reported compassion or helping behavior, however, the LPP was positively associated with empathic anger and helping the ostracism victim. Self-reported compassion was positively correlated with a frontal positive-going peak between 190 and 304ms, resembling the P3a. These findings highlight the importance of studying motivational dimensions of compassion alongside its cognitive and affective dimensions.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that people implicitly associate the emotional valence of abstract words with vertical position (i.e., positive words up, negative words down), resulting in the so-called valence-space congruency effect. Research has demonstrated that there is a valence-space congruency effect when it comes to emotional words. It's interesting to see that whether the emotional pictures with different levels of valence are mapped to distinct vertical space positions. Here, the event-related potential (ERP) and time-frequency techniques were employed to investigate the neural basis of the valence-space congruency effect of emotional pictures in a spatial Stroop task. Firstly, this study showed that the reaction time of the congruent condition (i.e., positive pictures in the top and negative pictures in the bottom of the screen) was significantly shorter than that of the incongruent condition (i.e., positive pictures in the bottom and negative pictures in the top of the screen), suggesting that exposure to stimuli with positive or negative valence, regardless of whether these stimuli were comprised of words or pictures, would be enough to invoke the vertical metaphor. Moreover, we found that the congruency between the vertical position and the valence of emotional pictures could significantly modulate the amplitude of the P2 component and the Late Positive Component (LPC) in ERP waveforms, as well as the post-stimulus alpha-ERD in the time-frequency plane. This study has conclusively demonstrated the presence of a space-valence congruency effect in emotional pictures and has elucidated the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms associated with the valence-space metaphor.

Abstract
Personalized recommendation has been increasingly used in online shopping environment, and improving the effectiveness of personalized recommendation is an important issue. On the basis of two-stage decision theory and preference inconsistency theory, our study adopted the neuroscientific methodology of event-related potential to investigate the decision-making process and psychological mechanism of consumers for personalized recommendation under different recommendation timings (browsing and decision stages) and recommended product types (similar and related). Behavioral results showed that consumers' acceptance of similar product recommendations was higher than that of related product recommendations during the browsing stage, whereas no difference was observed in consumers' acceptance of the two product types during the decision stage. More importantly, neurophysiology results provided underlying psychological mechanism for exploring consumers' decision-making process for personalized recommendations. Consumers' psychological mechanism of the personalized recommendations might be divided into two processes, the early automatic cognitive process indicated by the N2 component, and the late advanced cognitive process indicated by the P3 component. We suggested that N2 reflects the perceptual mismatch between the recommended products and the target products, and P3 reflects the attention capture during categorization evaluation of the recommended product and the target product. These findings have important theoretical and practical significance for the deeper understanding of consumers' decision-making process and psychological mechanism in personalized recommendation, as well as improving the effectiveness of personalized recommendation.

Abstract
The role of the visuospatial network in mathematical processing has been established, but the involvement of the semantic network in mathematical processing is still poorly understood. The current study utilized a number series completion paradigm with the event-related potential (ERP) technique to examine whether the semantic network supports mathematical processing and to find the corresponding spatiotemporal neural marker. In total, 32 right-handed undergraduate students were recruited and asked to complete the number series completion as well as the arithmetical computation task in which numbers were presented in sequence. The event-related potential and multi-voxel pattern analysis showed that the rule identification process involves more semantic processing when compared with the arithmetical computation processes, and it elicited higher amplitudes for the late negative component (LNC) in left frontal and temporal lobes. These results demonstrated that the semantic network supports the rule identification in mathematical processing, with the LNC acting as the neural marker.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide has rapid antidepressant effects in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), but its underlying mechanisms of therapeutic actions are not well understood. Moreover, most of the current studies lack objective biological indicators to evaluate the changes of nitrous oxide-induced brain function for TRD. Therefore, this study assessed the effect of nitrous oxide on brain function for TRD based on event-related potential (ERP) components and functional connectivity networks (FCNs) methods. In this randomized, longitudinal, placebo-controlled trial, all TRD participants were divided into two groups to receive either a 1-hour inhalation of nitrous oxide or a placebo treatment, and they took part in the same task-state electroencephalogram (EEG) experiment before and after treatment. The experimental results showed that nitrous oxide improved depressive symptoms better than placebo in terms of 17-Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score (HAMD-17). Statistical analysis based on ERP components showed that nitrous oxide-induced significant differences in amplitude and latency of N1, P1, N2, P2. In addition, increased brain functional connectivity was found after nitrous oxide treatment. And the change of network metrics has a significant correlation with decreased depressive symptoms. These findings may suggest that nitrous oxide improves depression symptoms for TRD by modifying brain function.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neurological diseases in North America and it is frequently associated with sensory processing difficulties, cognitive deficits, and psychiatric illness. While many studies have examined cognitive deficits in MS measured by behavioural responses and neuroimaging techniques, only a few studies have examined neurophysiological measures of auditory functioning in MS, such as the mismatch negativity (MMN). The MMN is an event-related potential that indicates automatic auditory change detection. This study examined whether MMN endpoints measured by electroencephalography (EEG) differ in individuals with relapsing-remitting MS compared to healthy controls and whether the symptomatology of MS, including symptoms of depression and fatigue, are related to MMN measures. A multi-feature MMN paradigm, which includes five distinct deviant tones, was used to assess auditory cortex function in MS. There were no significant differences in MMN amplitudes or latencies between the MS and control group (p < 0.05) and corresponding effect sizes were small. However, there was a correlation between reduced MMN amplitudes in response to an intensity deviant and physician-reported disability. The intensity MMN may be more sensitive to deterioration in this population. Ultimately, this study provides a comprehensive profile of early auditory processing abilities in MS and suggests that a reduction in the MMN response may be representative of disease severity in MS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors report significant long-term physical and cognitive declines post-treatment. Our purpose was to combine task-evoked Event-Related Potential (ERP) and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsf/MRI) methodologies to characterize the physiological underpinnings and cognitive sequelae of chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment, including changes in Quality-Of-Life (QOL) in patients with CRC, as compared to healthy control (HC) participants. METHODS This descriptive study recruited and obtained baseline data from patients with CRC at medical and surgical oncology visits four to six weeks post-op and followed them at 12- and 24-weeks. Procedures employed ERP, pencil and paper neuropsychological testing (N-P), structural/functional rsf/MRI, and self-report QOL methodologies. Data analyses included correlations, one-way ANOVA, Chi-square tests, and linear mixed models. RESULTS Study participants (n = 40) across groups (n = 15, 11, 14) were balanced on age, sex, education, and race, but not marital status Several significant associations were found between changes in Dorsal Attention Network (DAN)-related ERP measures (P2, N2, N2P2, N2pc amplitudes), with QOL measures between baseline and last visits (p < 0.05-0.001). Additionally, rsf/MRI findings showed increased network activity in a single node of the DAN post-treatment, which was associated with poorer performance on N-P tests of attention and working memory, as well as a focal decline in grey matter volume in the area. CONCLUSIONS Our methodology revealed structural and functional changes within the DAN associated with altered spatial attention, working memory, and ability to inhibit. These disruptions may be responsible for decreased QOL ratings in patients with CRC. This study provides a putative mechanism of understanding how altered brain structural/functional relationships impact cognition, QOL, and nursing care in patients with CRC. Abstract
Employees in Europe work on average 7.2 h per day. Prolonged periods of uninterrupted cognitive activity during the working day can cause changes in motivation, mental fatigue, and deterioration in cognitive function. In this exploratory study, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of taking 10-min breaks for light exercise every 50 min in preventing these negative effects during a simulated 7-h office-like computer work. Eighteen healthy young adult men (aged 26 ± 3 years) who did not work in an office participated. The effects of 7 h of office-like work with 10-min breaks every 50 min on central nervous system activity, cognitive function, mood, and motivation were investigated and compared with those measured on a control day without work. Our study found that engaging in 7 h of mental work similar to that found in an office environment, with 10-min breaks every 50 min, can negatively impact cognitive efficiency, suppress brain neural network activity, and cause mental fatigue. These effects do not fully recover after a 4.5-h rest. Additionally, taking short breaks during the workday does not prevent mental exhaustion or impairments in cognitive function. These findings should be considered when discussing strategies to prevent mental exhaustion caused by mental work.
