Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a novel metabolic biomarker of atherosclerosis. Nevertheless, the association between the AIP and new-onset hypertension has not been elucidated in the Chinese population. METHODS Prospective data were obtained from 3150 participants aged ≥ 18 years in the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 2009 to 2015. The AIP is a logarithmically transformed ratio of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in molar concentration. Cox regression analysis was used to determine the association of AIP index with new-onset hypertension. RESULTS After the six-year follow-up, 1054 (33.4%) participants developed new-onset hypertension. The participants were divided into AIP quartile groups (Q1-Q4). Compared with those in Q1, subjects in Q3-4 had nearly 1.35 times the risk of new-onset hypertension after full adjustment [Q3: hazard ratio (HR): 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13-1.62; Q4: HR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.13-1.64]. The risks of new-onset hypertension were nearly 1.30 times higher in subjects in Q2-4 than in subjects in Q1 (p < .01) after the full adjustment when we excluded subjects with diabetes and/or chronic kidney diseases. There was a significant difference [HR (CI): 1.27 (1.04-1.54) vs. 0.90 (0.69-1.18)] when subjects were divided into two groups according to body mass index (BMI) level (<24 vs. ≥24 kg/m2). CONCLUSIONS The present study suggested that individuals with a higher AIP index are associated with new-onset hypertension, independent of kidney function and glucose levels. The association was stronger in subjects with normal BMI, which may provide early screening of metabolomics in hypertension prevention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Establishing reference ranges for central airway parameters and exploring their influencing factors in Han Chinese non-smoking adults. METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on Han Chinese non-smoking adults who underwent chest CT scans at the Tongzhou Campus of Dongzhimen Hospital Affiliated with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between September 2022 and November 2022. The SYNAPSE 3D image analysis software was utilized, enabling the extraction of critical parameters such as central airway length, airway wall thickness (AWT), airway lumen area (ALA), and subcarinal angle (SCA). Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and multiple linear regression analysis methods were employed to evaluate the relationship between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. RESULTS The study encompassed 888 Han Chinese non-smoking adults, comprising 456 females and 432 males. Significant sex differences were noted in central airway length, AWT, and ALA, with measurements in males exceeding those in females (p < 0.01) with no significant difference in SCA. Correlation analyses unveiled relationships between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. During multiple linear regression analyses, no conclusive evidence emerged to demonstrate the independent or combined explanatory or predictive capacity of the aforementioned variables for central airway length and SCA. Although sex has a significant impact on AWT and ALA, its capability in explanation or prediction remains limited. The conclusions drawn from the primary analysis receive reinforcement from the outcomes of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION Establishing the distribution range of central airway parameters in non-smoking Han Chinese adults. It observed significant sex differences in these parameters, except for the SCA. However, the study found that the predictive or explanatory power of age, sex, weight, and height for central airway parameters was either limited or non-significant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The community-based participatory approach (CBPA) has gained increasing recognition worldwide for enhancing the effectiveness of intervention. It is relatively new in Chinese societies and participants' perceptions are underexplored. This study aims to explore abused Chinese women's perceptions on the CBPA programme in addressing their needs. METHODS A total of 11 abused Chinese women were recruited for a focus group and individual interviews. A semi-structured interview guide was used. All interviews were audio-recorded and data were transcribed verbatim. Conventional content analysis was used for analysis. RESULTS Four themes were identified regarding the women's perceptions and experiences of the community-based participatory approach programme: (1) Women's perceived acceptability of the CBPA programme; (2) Women's perceived usefulness of the CBPA programme; (3) Women's perceived feasibility of the CBPA programme; and (4) Empowering the women through participating in CBPA. CONCLUSIONS Abused Chinese women had high perceived acceptance and positive experiences towards the community-based participatory approach. Women benefited from their robust participation throughout the process. The findings confirm the potential of using the community-based participatory approach in designing interventions for future programme planning and intervention to address the needs of abused Chinese women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore associations of dentition status with frailty and death. METHODS Based on the "Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) in 2002-2018", a prospective cohort study was conducted that 21,159 participants not frail and aged ≥ 65 were included at baseline. The outcome was frailty and death. Frailty index (FI) was constructed based on 44 health items. The mediation role of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) was examined using cross-sectional data in 2008, 2011 and 2014. RESULTS The incidence density of frailty was 50.1 (95%CI: 48.8∼51.4) per 1,000 person-years. Compared with ≥ 20 natural teeth, the odds of frailty hazards were 1.27 (95%CI: 1.16∼1.39) times higher for < 20 natural teeth with dental prostheses, and were 1.24 (95%CI: 1.14∼1.35) times higher for < 20 natural teeth without dental prostheses; the odds of death hazards for < 20 natural teeth without dental prostheses were 1.36 (95%CI: 1.26∼1.45) times higher. Among participants with <20 natural teeth and without dental prostheses at baseline, the odds of frailty hazards for using dental prostheses were 0.48 (95%CI: 0.41∼0.56) times as high as those remaining not to use, and the odds of death hazards were 0.44 (95%CI: 0.39∼0.48) times as high. The cross-sectional data showed higher levels of hs-CRP explained 5∼6% of associations between dentition status and frailty. CONCLUSION Natural teeth <20 was associated with higher odds of frailty and death. Mediation analysis based on cross-sectional data offered clues for chronic inflammation pathway, yet this finding is still needed to be further verified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several alternative flaps have been introduced and used for autologous breast reconstruction. However, as body fat distribution is different among patients, the donor of choice for sufficient breast projection varies between patients. METHODS Patients who underwent autologous breast reconstruction from Jan 2018 to Sep 2022 were included. Age, body mass index (BMI), smoking history and hypertension, and diabetes occurrence were collected as baseline demographic data. Breast projection with five types of flap thickness was measured based on computed tomography angiography. Analysis was performed for five major autologous flaps for breast reconstruction. RESULTS A total of 563 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 47.4 ± 7.9 (standard deviation; SD) years. The mean BMI of the patients was 24.0 ± 3.4 kg/m2. Only the correlation between flap thickness to breast projection ratio and age in the PAP flap illustrated statistical significance (p = .039), but the correlation coefficient was quite low (r = -0.087). Slim patients who had lower BMIs (under 25 kg/m2) had significantly higher sufficient flap thickness for breast reconstruction than patients with higher BMIs over 25 kg/m2 in the profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap (p < .001), the lumbar artery perforator (LAP) flap (p < .001), and the superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP) flap (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The deep inferior epigastric perforator flap provided sufficient thickness and was not usually affected by age and BMI. The PAP, LAP, and SGAP flaps tended to maintain the thickness of the flap even when BMI decreased, so they are advantageous for reconstruction in slim patients. This study contributes evidence in consideration of flap selection in autologous breast reconstruction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between weight loss and subsequent functional decline is uncertain. The study aims to elucidate the association between weight loss over a year and subsequent functional decline requiring assistance in performing their activities of daily living in older individuals. METHODS The study used data from the publicly funded Long-Term Care Insurance service in Japan, which provides coverage for long-term care services for individuals unable to perform activities of daily living due to physical or cognitive impairment. The study enrolled people born in or before 1949, who underwent health checkups in both 2014 and 2015. The participants were followed from 2015 to the worsening of functional decline requiring long-term care services, death, or February 28, 2019, whichever occurred first. The risk of subsequent functional decline in each weight loss category was estimated using a Cox regression model adjusted for age, sex, baseline body mass index, smoking, and Charlson comorbidity index. RESULTS We identified 67,452 eligible individuals from the database. The median follow-up period was 1,284 days. The hazard ratios (95 % confidence interval) of functional decline for -1 %, -2 %, -3 %, -4 %, and ≤-5% weight change compared to 0 % weight change were 1.17 (1.03-1.32), 1.26 (1.11-1.43), 1.29 (1.12-1.49), 1.61 (1.39-1.87), and 1.79 (1.58-1.99), respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Older people with weight loss of 1 % or more were at risk of functional decline. Close weight monitoring may serve as an easy and inexpensive means of identifying older individuals at risk of functional decline.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate whether sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) therapy is associated with a reduction of renal events compared with other glucose-lowering drugs (oGLDs) among Japanese people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and grade 3 (G3) chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a real-world clinical practice setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS People with T2D who were newly prescribed an SGLT2i or an oGLD from April 2014 to November 2021 (without prior use of index drugs for ≥ 1 year prior to index date) and G3 CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] ≥ 30 to < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) were selected from the Medical Data Vision database (MDV-DB) and the Real-World Data database (RWD-DB). SGLT2i and oGLD users were matched (1:1) using propensity score on patient background characteristics. The primary endpoint was a composite of the development of end-stage kidney disease or a sustained decline in eGFR of 50% or more. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS Overall, 3190 (1595 per group) patients in the MDV-DB and 2572 (1286 per group) patients in the RWD-DB were included in the analyses. The composite outcome was significantly lower in the SGLT2i group than in the oGLD group in the MDV-DB (HR 0.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.33 to 0.74, P < 0.001) and in the RWD-DB (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.37 to 0.88, P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS Japanese people with T2D and G3 CKD initiating an SGLT2i had a lower risk of renal events than people initiating an oGLD.

Abstract
The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is a measure of intuitive eating behaviors that has been extensively validated, with traditional latent variable modeling approaches, in youth and adults from many different populations, including college students in China. However, there is still a lack of research on the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in adults from the Chinese general population. Moreover, psychometric network analysis, as a complement to traditional latent variable modeling approaches, has not been used for examining the psychometric properties of the IES-2. Thus, the present study used a psychometric network approach to evaluate the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in Chinese adults from the general population. A sample of 700 Chinese general adults (50% women; Mage = 31.13 years, SD = 9.19) recruited online were included in the present study. Psychometric network analysis was performed. Exploratory graph analysis (EGA) identified four dimensions, which were well separated in the estimated network. The network structure showed excellent stability and metric measurement invariance (i.e., network loadings) across men and women. Furthermore, several items on the IES-2 were identified as key nodes in the network of the IES-2 that may be important for the development and maintenance of intuitive eating. For example, two items (i.e., "I trust my body to tell me when to eat," and "I trust my body to tell me when to stop eating") related to reliance on body cues were the most impactful nodes in the complete network. The findings of our study provide a greater understanding of the IES-2 from the perspective of network analysis and have implications for applications of intuitive eating interventions for general populations.

Abstract
Objective Pulmonary function tests are essential for diagnosing respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but are typically not performed in Japan during annual health checkups, which hinders the early diagnosis of respiratory diseases. Methods Individuals who agreed to participate in the Yamagata-Takahata study during medical checkups in Takahata (Yamagata Prefecture, Japan) in 2011 were examined. We interviewed 669 participants (49.0% men; mean age, 67.7 years old) regarding their respiratory symptoms and smoking habits and performed pulmonary function tests during the study. Results Based on pulmonary function test results, 141 participants had pulmonary dysfunction, and 115 had obstructive pulmonary dysfunction. The risk of respiratory dysfunction, particularly obstructive respiratory dysfunction, was examined by referring to a questionnaire tool for an early COPD diagnosis. The associations between age, the smoking history, respiratory symptoms, and obstructive respiratory dysfunction were evaluated. Obstructive respiratory dysfunction was found in 17.6% of participants ≥50 years old and 19.5% ≥60 years old, 30.3% had a smoking history, and 32.8% had respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, the participants with multiple factors had a higher probability of obstructive respiratory dysfunction. Conclusion Subjects with obstructive pulmonary dysfunction are expected to be efficiently identified by extracting individuals by age and smoking habit and through a respiratory symptom questionnaire, although pulmonary function tests cannot be performed for all individuals during health checkups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aims to investigate the network structure of depressive symptoms, the interrelationships between individual personality traits and depressive symptoms, and gender differences among Chinese older people aged 60 and above. METHOD We performed network analyses with a regularized Graphical Gaussian Model and a case-dropping bootstrap approach. A sample of 4876 older Chinese people aged 60+ was included in the analyses. We investigated the central symptoms in the depression network and the bridge nodes that connect personality facets and depressive symptoms. Gender differences were investigated by testing the global strength, network invariance, and edge weights. RESULTS Sadness and depressed mood were the most central depressive symptoms, while somatic symptoms such as restless sleep were the least central. Neurotic facets, particularly "worry a lot" and "get nervous easily", played significant bridging roles in the web of personality traits and depressive symptoms. Gender differences were observed in three edges among different personality traits (rude-worried, original-worried, and forgiving-nervous). LIMITATION The study adopts a cross-sectional dataset, and therefore, cannot track the network changes over time or conclude a causal relationship. DISCUSSION The study calls for more focus and prioritization on sadness, depressed mood and neurotic traits in the identification of depression among older Chinese people. Future researchers and practitioners should better understand of older Chinese adults' worry and nervousness to develop appropriate practices and policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgery is widely regarded as a pivotal therapeutic approach for treating oesophageal cancer, and clinical observations have revealed that many oesophageal cancer patients also present with concomitant hyperlipidaemia. It is surprising that few studies have been performed to determine how blood lipid levels are affected by oesophageal cancer resection. This research was designed to assess the influence of oesophageal cancer resection on lipid profiles among individuals diagnosed with both oesophageal cancer and hyperlipidaemia. METHODS A retrospective analysis was carried out on 110 patients with hyperlipidaemia and oesophageal cancer who had undergone oesophagectomy at the 900th Hospital of the Joint Logistics Support Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Preoperative and postoperative serological data were collected at seven-, thirty-, sixty-day-, and one-year-long intervals. Changes in lipid levels were compared, the remission of various types of hyperlipidaemia was statistically assessed, and Pearson correlation was used to analyse the association between lipid changes and preoperative body weight. The research sought to assess the reduction in body weight and the proportion of body weight lost one year following surgery. RESULTS Noteworthy decreases were observed in total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, with TC decreasing from 6.20 mmol/L to 5.20 mmol/L, TG decreasing from 1.40 mmol/L to 1.20 mmol/L, and LDL decreasing from 4.50 mmol/L to 3.30 mmol/L. Conversely, there was a notable increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, which increased from 1.20 mmol/L to 1.40 mmol/L (P < 0.05) compared to the preoperative levels. Notably, the remission rates for mixed hyperlipidaemia (60.9%) and high cholesterol (60.0%) were considerably greater than those for high triglycerides (16.2%). Alterations in TC at one year postoperatively correlated with preoperative weight and weight loss (r = 0.315, -0.216); changes in TG correlated with preoperative weight, percentage of total weight loss (TWL%), and weight reduction (r = -0.295, -0.246, 0.320); and changes in LDL correlated with preoperative weight, TWL%, and weight loss (r = 0.251, 0.186, and -0.207). Changes in non-high-density lipoprotein(non-HDL) were linked to preoperative weight (r = 0.300), and changes in TG/HDL were correlated with preoperative weight and TWL% (r = -0.424, -0.251). CONCLUSIONS Oesophagectomy significantly improved lipid profiles in oesophageal cancer patients, potentially leading to a reduction in overall cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis measures the contribution of genetic variation in gene expression on complex traits. Although this methodology has been used to examine gene regulation in numerous human tissues, eQTL research in solid tissues is relatively lacking. We conducted eQTL analysis on placentas collected from an East Asian population in an effort to identify gene regulatory mechanisms in this tissue. Placentas (n = 102) were collected at the time of cesarean delivery. mRNA was extracted, sequenced with NGS, and compared with matched maternal and fetal DNA arrays performed using maternal and neonatal cord blood. Linear regression modeling was performed using tensorQTL. Fine-mapping along with epigenomic annotation was used to select putative functional variants. We identified 2,703 coding genes that contained at least one eQTL with statistical significance (false discovery rate <0.05). After fine-mapping, we found 108 previously unreported eQTL variants with posterior inclusion probability >0.1. Of these, 19% were located in genomic regions with evidence from public placental epigenome suggesting that they may be functionally relevant. For example, variant rs28379289 located in the placenta-specific regulatory region changes the binding affinity of transcription factor leading to higher expression of LGALS3, which is known to affect placental function. This study expands the knowledge base of regulatory elements within the human placenta and identifies 108 previously unreported placenta eQTL signals, which are listed in our publicly available GMI eQTL database. Further studies are needed to identify and characterize genetic regulatory mechanisms that affect placental function in normal pregnancy and placenta-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Motor cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) represents a critical pre-dementia and disability state characterized by a combination of objectively measured slow walking speed and subjective memory complaints (SMCs). This study aims to identify risk factors for MCR and investigate the relationship between plasma levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and MCR among Chinese community-dwelling elderly populations. METHODS A total of 1312 participants were involved in this study based on the data of the Rugao Longevity and Aging Study (RuLAS). The MCR was characterized by SMCs and slow walking speed. The SCCs were defined as a positive answer to the question 'Do you feel you have more problems with memory than most?' in a 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Slow walking speed was determined by one standard deviation or more below the mean value of the patient's age and gender group. The plasma of 8-OHdG were measured by a technician in the biochemistry laboratory of the Rugao People's Hospital during the morning of the survey. RESULTS The prevalence of MCR was found to be 7.9%. After adjusting for covariates, significant associations with MCR were observed in older age (OR 1.057; p = 0.018), history of cerebrovascular disease (OR 2.155; p = 0.010), and elevated 8-OHdG levels (OR 1.007; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS This study indicated the elevated plasma 8-OHdG is significantly associated with increased MCR risk in the elderly, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for early detection and intervention in MCR. This finding underscores the importance of monitoring oxidative DNA damage markers in predicting cognitive and motor function declines, offering new avenues for research and preventive strategies in aging populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gut microbiota is significantly influenced by altitude. However, the dynamics of gut microbiota in relation to altitude remains undisclosed. METHODS In this study, we investigated the microbiome profile of 610 healthy young men from three different places in China, grouped by altitude, duration of residence, and ethnicity. We conducted widely targeted metabolomic profiling and clinical testing to explore metabolic characteristics. RESULTS Our findings revealed that as the Han individuals migrated from low altitude to high latitude, the gut microbiota gradually converged towards that of the Tibetan populations but reversed upon returning to lower altitude. Across different cohorts, we identified 51 species specifically enriched during acclimatization and 57 species enriched during deacclimatization to high altitude. Notably, Prevotella copri was found to be the most enriched taxon in both Tibetan and Han populations after ascending to high altitude. Furthermore, significant variations in host plasma metabolome and clinical indices at high altitude could be largely explained by changes in gut microbiota composition. Similar to Tibetans, 41 plasma metabolites, such as lactic acid, sphingosine-1-phosphate, taurine, and inositol, were significantly elevated in Han populations after ascending to high altitude. Germ-free animal experiments demonstrated that certain species, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which exhibited altitude-dependent variations in human populations, might play crucial roles in host purine metabolism. CONCLUSIONS This study provides insights into the dynamics of gut microbiota and host plasma metabolome with respect to altitude changes, indicating that their dynamics may have implications for host health at high altitude and contribute to host adaptation. Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a global health priority. Maintaining and delaying depressive symptoms in older adults is a key to healthy aging. This study aimed to identify depressive symptom trajectories, predictors and mortality, while also exploring the relationship between air quality and depressive symptoms in older adults in the Hong Kong community over 14 years. METHODS This study is a longitudinal study in Hong Kong. The target population was community-dwelling older adults over age 65. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Group-based trajectory model was used to identify heterogeneity in longitudinal changes over 14 years and examine the associations between baseline variables and trajectories for different cohort members using multinomial logistic regression. The Kaplan-Meier method was employed to conduct survival analysis and explore the variations in survival probabilities over time among different trajectory group. Linear mixed model was used to explore the relationship between air quality and depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 2828 older adults were included. Three different trajectories of depressive symptoms in older people were identified: relatively stable (15.4%), late increase (67.1%) and increase (17.5%). Female, more number of chronic diseases, poor cognitive function, and poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were significantly associated with other less favorable trajectories compared with participants with stable levels of depressive symptoms. The late increase group had a lower mortality rate than the relatively stable and increased groups. Lower baseline ambient air pollutant exposure to NO2 over 14 years was significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS In this study, we found that a late increase in depressive symptoms was the predominant trend in older Chinese people in Hong Kong. Poorer HRQOL was predictive of less favorable trajectories of depressive symptoms. Ambient air pollution was associated with depressive symptoms. This novel observation strengthens the epidemiological evidence of longitudinal changes in depressive symptoms and associations with late-life exposure to air pollution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Symptom burdens tend to increase for patients with cancer and their families over the disease trajectory. There is still a lack of evidence on the associations between symptom changes and the quality of dying and death. In this context, this research investigated how symptom changes influence the quality of dying and death. METHODS This international prospective cohort study (the East Asian Collaborative Cross-Cultural Study to Elucidate the Dying Process (EASED), 2017-2019) included 22, 11, and 4 palliative care units across Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Eligible participants were adults (Japan and Korea, ≥18 years; Taiwan, ≥20 years) with locally advanced or metastatic cancer. Physical and psychological symptoms were assessed by physicians upon admission and within 3 days before death. Death quality was assessed using the Good Death Scale (GDS), developed in Taiwan. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to identify correlations between symptom severity changes and GDS scores. RESULTS Among 998 patients (542 [54.3%] men and 456 [45.7%] women; mean [SD] age = 70.1 [± 12.5] years), persistent dyspnea was associated with lower GDS scores when compared to stable dyspnea (β = -0.427, 95% CI = -0.783 to -0.071). Worsened (-1.381, -1.932 to -0.831) and persistent (-1.680, -2.701 to -0.659) delirium were also significantly associated with lower GDS scores. CONCLUSIONS Better quality of dying and death was associated with improved symptom control, especially for dyspnea and delirium. Integrating an outcome measurement for the quality of dying and death is important in the management of symptoms across the disease trajectory in a goal-concordant manner.

Abstract
Reports on the association between vitamin D levels and fall risk have been mixed, and long-term follow-up studies are lacking. This 5-year cohort study of 5,343 community-dwelling Japanese people aged 40-74 years found that low vitamin D levels are not associated with a high risk of recurrent falls. PURPOSE Findings of cohort studies on the association between plasma 25-hydoxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and fall risk have been mixed, and long-term follow-up studies are lacking. The present study investigated whether low plasma 25(OH)D levels are longitudinally associated with a high risk of recurrent falls in adults. METHODS This 5-year cohort study included 5,343 community-dwelling Japanese people aged 40-74 years. Baseline blood collection and a questionnaire survey were conducted in 2011-2013. Plasma 25(OH)D levels were determined and divided into quintiles after stratification by season, sex, and age group. Information on recurrent falls occurring in the year before the survey 5 years later was obtained, and participants with two or more falls were considered to have experienced recurrent falls. Covariates were sex, age, marital status, education, occupation, BMI, total physical activity levels, calcium intake, vitamin K intake, smoking, drinking, and disease history. RESULTS Mean age and 25(OH)D levels were 60.9 years and 50.9 nmol/L, respectively. In the follow-up survey, 209 recurrent falls were reported. Plasma 25(OH)D levels were not significantly associated with the occurrence of recurrent falls in men, women, or men/women-combined (adjusted P for trend = 0.1198, 0.8383, and 0.2355, respectively). In men and men/women-combined, adjusted ORs for recurrent falls in the lowest quintile were significantly lower (adjusted OR = 0.42 and 0.59, respectively) than the middle quintile (reference). CONCLUSION Low plasma 25(OH)D levels are not associated with a high risk of recurrent falls in middle-aged and older people. Further longitudinal studies will be needed to confirm our findings in other populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family caregivers, also known as informal caregivers, are critical for the home care of patients with urostomy. The present study aimed to investigate the benefits of family caregivers in China while taking care of patients with urostomy from a positive perspective. METHODS A qualitative research design was adopted, with a thematic analysis. The qualitative research software NVivo was used for data analysis. Twenty-two family caregivers of urostomy patients participated in an in-depth interview for 60-90 min. A qualitative analysis was performed using a thematic approach in accordance with the six-stage thematic analysis process reported by Braun and Clarke (2006). RESULTS The following four benefits were identified: mastering knowledge and skills, promoting self-growth, establishing close family ties, and changing the way of life. Among these four themes, 11 sub-themes were constructed by coders. CONCLUSIONS This study provides new insights into intervention measures for family caregivers of patients with urostomy, which could play an important role in developing the overall model of family-centered nursing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bedtime procrastination refers to an individual's inability to go to bed at a predetermined time without external obstacles. Previous researchers have found that the bedtime procrastination is harmful to human physical and mental health, but these research on bedtime procrastination have mostly focused on exploring individual factors, while ignoring the external environmental factors. Therefore, this is the first study to investigate bedtime procrastination from the perspective of family environments. METHODS The study was conducted using a convenient sampling method and online questionnaires. Family Cohesion Scale, Coping Styles Questionnaire, Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale and Bedtime Procrastination Scale were used to measure sleep and psychological condition of 1,048 college students. RESULTS Family cohesion negatively predicted bedtime procrastination. Additionally, positive coping style and mobile phone addiction had significant independent mediating effects. Furthermore, positive coping style and mobile phone addiction had chain mediating effects between family cohesion and bedtime procrastination. CONCLUSION This study revealed the effect of coping styles and mobile phone addiction on the relationship between family cohesion and bedtime procrastination among Chinese college students. These findings explained the mechanisms of bedtime procrastination from the perspective of environment, so as to effectively intervene the bedtime procrastination of college students from the perspective of external environment.

Abstract
The current study seeks to investigate digital inequality among older adults in China, specifically examining two socially defined age groups: young-old adults (aged 60-74) and old-old adults (aged 75+). Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were used to examine the prevalence of and identify the factors associated with Internet access, usage (frequency and breadth containing 11 activities), skills, and social support. The study used data from the 2018 China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey (CLASS) which consisted of 11,419 respondents aged 60 years and older. We found that 40.22% of older adults had access to the Internet, and 18.27% used it regularly. Socioeconomic factors played a crucial role in determining Internet access and usage, with young-old adults with higher education using the Internet more frequently, deliberately, and competently. Those with higher economic status had greater social support to use it, and the old-old adults with higher socioeconomic status were more likely to have Internet access. This study has implications for prioritizing targeted policies and interventions aimed at supporting socioeconomically disadvantaged older adults and ensuring equal opportunities for all to access and benefit from the digital world.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested that dogs were domesticated during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in Siberia, which contrasts with previous proposed domestication centers (e.g. Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia). Ancient DNA provides a powerful resource for the study of mammalian evolution and has been widely used to understand the genetic history of domestic animals. To understand the maternal genetic history of East Asian dogs, we have made a complete mitogenome dataset of 120 East Asian canids from 38 archaeological sites, including 102 newly sequenced from 12.9 to 1 ka BP (1,000 years before present). The majority (112/119, 94.12%) belonged to haplogroup A, and half of these (55/112, 49.11%) belonged to sub-haplogroup A1b. Most existing mitochondrial haplogroups were present in ancient East Asian dogs. However, mitochondrial lineages in ancient northern dogs (northeastern Eurasia and northern East Asia) were deeper and older than those in southern East Asian dogs. Results suggests that East Asian dogs originated from northeastern Eurasian populations after the LGM, dispersing in two possible directions after domestication. Western Eurasian (Europe and the Middle East) dog maternal ancestries genetically influenced East Asian dogs from approximately 4 ka BP, dramatically increasing after 3 ka BP, and afterwards largely replaced most primary maternal lineages in northern East Asia. Additionally, at least three major mitogenome sub-haplogroups of haplogroup A (A1a, A1b, and A3) reveal at least two major dispersal waves onto the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in ancient times, indicating eastern (A1b and A3) and western (A1a) Eurasian origins.

Abstract
Despite patients' cultural background influencing their satisfaction with medical care the majority of studies draw on assumptions and models from the Western world. We move attention to the East Asian world by investigating the attributes of Chinese patients' satisfaction with their hospital in-patient care. Our research design is an exploratory qualitative study of 577 incidents of Chinese hospital in-patients' complaints and compliments. The data were drawn from a sample of reports of patients' satisfaction with their care in a district general hospital over a five-year period. Analysis focused on satisfactory and dissatisfactory events to derive attributes involved. We find patients in Chinese culture evaluate satisfaction with their care using eight attributes: professionalism, efficiency, chīn-chièh, respect, patience, responsibility, value and ethics. We explore how Chinese patients' values and beliefs toward medicine and care-giving construct distinct meanings around these attributes. By synthesizing our findings with those in the literature we propose generic attributes which can form the basis of measures of Chinese patient satisfaction and inform training in cultural competence.

Abstract
The inhibition of coagulation factor XI (FXI) presents an attractive approach for anticoagulation as it is not expected to increase the risk of clinically relevant bleeding and is anticipated to be at least as effective as currently available anticoagulants. Fesomersen is a conjugated antisense oligonucleotide that selectively inhibits the expression of FXI. The article describes three clinical studies that investigated the safety, pharmacokinetic (PK), and pharmacodynamic (PD) profiles of fesomersen after subcutaneous (s.c.) injection to healthy participants. The studies included participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds (Caucasian, Japanese, and Chinese). Fesomersen demonstrated good safety and tolerability in all three studies. No major bleeding events were observed. After single-dose s.c. injection, fesomersen was rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation, with maximum fesomersen-equivalent (fesomersen-eq) concentrations (Cmax) in plasma observed within a few hours. After reaching Cmax, plasma fesomersen-eq concentrations declined in a biphasic fashion. The PD analyses showed that the injection of fesomersen led to dose-dependent reductions in FXI activity and increases in activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). The maximum observed PD effects were reached between Day 15 and 30, and FXI activity and aPTT returned to near-baseline levels by Day 90 after a single dose. The PK/PD profiles after a single injection were similar among the various ethnic groups. Collectively, the study results suggest that fesomersen has a favorable safety profile and predictable and similar PK and PD profiles across Chinese, Japanese, and Caucasian participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) could lead to serious problems (exp. suicidal attempts) among children and adolescents. Positive youth development (PYD) focuses on comprehensive development instead of a single problem. This study aims to explore the longitudinal relationship between NSSI and PYD among Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS The longitudinal study used the three-wave dataset from the Chengdu Positive Child Development (CPCD) in southwest China between 2019 and 2021, including 10,370 participants. The parallel process Latent Growth Curve Model (LGCM) was utilized to analyze the relationship between PYD and NSSI across time. RESULTS The study results demonstrated that the initial level of NSSI is negatively associated with the initial value (β = -0.730, p < 0.01) and the growth rate (β = -0.012, p < 0.01) of PYD, and the development rate of the two variables are negatively related to each other(β = -0.120, p < 0.01). LIMITATIONS The specific relationships between PYD attributes and NSSI should be explored in the future. And the cultural variation among countries deserves more research. Moreover, the dynamic cohort research leads to a relatively high loss of participants. CONCLUSIONS PYD and NSSI are closely associated among children and adolescents. Instead of playing a protective role, PYD tends to be predicted by NSSI behaviors over time.

Abstract
Human lipidome still remains largely unexplored among Chinese schizophrenia patients. We aimed to identify novel lipid molecules associated with schizophrenia and cognition among schizophrenia patients. The current study included 96 male schizophrenia patients and 96 gender-matched healthy controls. Untargeted lipidomics profiling was conducted among all participants. Logistic regression models were used to assess metabolite associations with schizophrenia. We further assessed the incremental predictive value of identified metabolites beyond conventional risk factors on schizophrenia status. In addition, identified metabolites were tested for association with cognitive function among schizophrenia patients using linear regression models. A total of 34 metabolites were associated with schizophrenia. Addition of these identified metabolites to age, body mass index, smoking, and education significantly increased the risk reclassification of schizophrenia. Among the schizophrenia-related metabolites, 10 were further associated with cognition in schizophrenia patients, including four metabolites associated with immediate memory, two metabolites associated with delayed memory, three metabolites associated with visuospatial, four metabolites associated with language, one metabolite associated with attention, and two metabolites associated with the total score. Our findings provide novel insights into the biological mechanisms of schizophrenia, suggesting that lipid metabolites may serve as potential diagnostic or therapeutic targets of schizophrenia.

Abstract
The 1994 WHO criterion of a T-score ≤ -2.5 for densitometric osteoporosis was chosen because it results in a prevalence commensurate with the observed lifetime risk of fragility fractures in Caucasian women aged ≥ 50 years. Due to the much lower risk of fragility fracture among East Asians, the application of the conventional WHO criterion to East Asians leads to an over inflated prevalence of osteoporosis, particularly for spine osteoporosis. According to statistical modeling and when a local BMD reference is used, we tentatively recommend the cutpoint values for T-score of femoral neck, total hip, and spine to be approximately -2.7, -2.6, and -3.7 for Hong Kong Chinese women. Using radiographic osteoporotic vertebral fracture as a surrogate clinical endpoint, we empirically demonstrated that a femoral neck T-score of -2.77 for Chinese women was equivalent to -2.60 for Italian women, a spine T-score of -3.75 for Chinese women was equivalent to -2.44 for Italian women, and for Chinese men a femoral neck T-score of -2.77 corresponded to spine T-score of -3.37. For older Chinese men, we tentatively recommend the cutpoint values for T-score of femoral neck, total hip, and spine to be approximately -2.7, -2.6, and -3.2. With the BMD reference published by IKi et al. applied, T-score of femoral neck, total hip, and spine of -2.75, -3.0, and -3.9 for Japanese women will be more in line with the WHO osteoporosis definition. The revised definition of osteoporosis cutpoint T-scores for East Asians will allow a more meaningful international comparison of disease burden.

Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that may induce complications such as poor wound healing. Stem cell therapies have shown promise in treating diabetic wounds with pre-clinical and clinical studies. However, little bibliometric analysis has been carried out on stem cells in the treatment of diabetic wounds. In this study, we retrieved relevant papers published from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2023, from Chinese and English databases. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the authors, institutions, and keywords by standard bibliometric indicators. Our analysis findings indicated that publications on stem cells in the treatment of diabetic wounds kept increasing. The most prolific author was Qian Cai (n = 7) and Mohammad Bayat (n = 16) in Chinese and English databases, respectively. Institutions distribution analysis showed that Chinese institutions conducted most publications, and the most prolific institution was the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital (n = 9) and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (n = 17) in Chinese and English databases, respectively. The highest centrality keyword in Chinese and English databases was "wound healing" (0.54) and "in vitro" (0.13), respectively. There were 8 and 11 efficient and convincing keyword clusters produced by a log-likelihood ratio in the Chinese and English databases, respectively. The strongest burst keyword was "exosome" (strength 3.57) and "endothelial progenitor cells" (strength 7.87) in the Chinese and English databases, respectively. These findings indicated a direction for future therapies and research on stem cells in the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In East Asian individuals, the nasal bone already has sufficient height for an ideal dorsal profile, but the tip requires enhancement for a desired projection. Consequently, the gap between the intrinsic bony structure and the established nasal tip requires appropriate management. The options are either to reduce the keystone region to create a smooth bed for a conventional dorsal onlay graft or to preserve the original osseocartilaginous structures and then customize a supplementary graft. The aim of this study was to detail and validate the utilization of a relay graft, a transition graft that fills the structural gap between the upper dorsum and established tip graft. The proper application of this graft could prevent osteotomy and preserve the intrinsic dorsum. METHODS Relay grafts were applied during rib-based rhinoplasty in East Asian patients. Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetric evaluations of the patients were performed. Anthropometric points were analyzed in a blinded fashion. Outcome variables were tip projection improvement, radix elevation, and the angulation of kyphion and pronasale. RESULTS Fifteen female patients, ranging in age from 21 to 40 years (average 24.5 years), were included. In all cases, the relay graft was applied as one essential element for filling the structural gap. No crooked dorsal profile or visible graft was noted in all cases. Fifteen patients completed the pre- and postoperative stereophotogrammetric study. Postoperative analysis showed great improvement of tip position as well as a slight elevation of the radix, evidenced by the consistent change of kyphion/pronasale angulation and sellion elevation. CONCLUSIONS The relay graft effectively mitigates the necessity of a disruptive dorsal reduction. It is entirely possible for East Asians to achieve a smooth dorsal profile when only the lower half of the dorsum is transitioned to the proposed tip position. Abstract
To determine the pharmacokinetics (PK), safety, and bioequivalence profiles of 0.5-g calcium dobesilate capsules in both fasting and fed states for the test drug and reference drug. A randomized-sequence, single-dose, open-label, 2-period crossover study was conducted in fasted and fed healthy Chinese volunteers (Chinese Clinical Trials Registry identifier: CTR202000268-01). The fasting and fed studies, both involving 24 subjects, were conducted. A single dosage of either the reference or the test preparation was given to each eligible subject in a 1:1 ratio, followed by a 7-day rest interval before the administration of the alternative formulation. After taking the capsules, plasma samples were taken for 48 hours, and using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the calcium dobesilate level was determined. The PK parameters evaluated in the study included the maximum serum concentration (Cmax), area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration, AUC from time 0 to infinity, half-life, time to Cmax, and terminal elimination rate constant. In addition, the safety evaluation encompassed monitoring fluctuations in vitals (temperature, pulse, and blood pressure) and laboratory tests (urinalysis, hepatic function, blood biochemistry, and hematology), as well as recording the emergence of adverse events (AEs). The geometric mean ratio (GMR) of the test/reference medications was used to assess bioequivalence by determining if the 90% confidence intervals of the GMR fell within the predefined range of 80%-125%. AEs were assessed as safety end points. The study included 48 healthy Chinese volunteers (with n = 24 each for the fasting and the fed conditions), and no subjects dropped out for any reason. The differences in the PK metrics for the test and reference drugs for both conditions were insignificant (P > .05). For bioequivalence, irrespective of whether the food was consumed or not, the range of the 90% confidence intervals of the GMR for Cmax, AUC from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration, and AUC from time 0 to infinity was between 80% and 125%. In the experiment, no serious AEs were recorded. Our findings revealed that the calcium dobesilate capsules used as the reference and the test drugs were both bioequivalent. Irrespective of whether the healthy Chinese volunteers consumed food or not, the PK and safety profiles were comparable.

Abstract
PURPOSE Loneliness is a critical issue affecting the general population. Current evidence from national surveys of loneliness is scarce. The study aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of loneliness and its associating suicide risks in Taiwan. METHODS Four annual telephone interview surveys were performed by the Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center in 2015-2017 and 2020 during COVID outbreak. Each year the sample was randomly selected by stratifying the general public in different geographical areas and fulfilled a questionnaire collecting information including loneliness, psychological distress, and suicide risk assessment. All the data were analyzed using SPSS25 analysis. RESULTS A total of 8460 participants were recruited. The average prevalence of loneliness was 12.6 %. Feelings of loneliness was significantly correlated with psychological distress and most risk factors relating to suicide. The odds of loneliness for lifetime suicidal ideation, lifetime suicide attempt, and future suicide intent were 4.9, 5.1, and 9.2, respectively. During the COVID-19 period, loneliness and suicidality demonstrated a noteworthy decline trend, whereas "no one trustworthy to talk to" was the only item that showed significant increase under the pandemic and also impacted on loneliness. CONCLUSION Nearly one in ten Taiwanese people felt lonely before and during COVID-19. Loneliness was closely linked with various suicide risk factors such as lifetime suicide ideation and attempt or future intention. Although psychological distress and suicide risk were not increased during COVID-19, maintaining trustful relationships to seek support appeared to be critical to prevent the risks of loneliness or suicide.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop and validate a mortality risk prediction model for older people based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey using the stacking ensemble strategy. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 12,769 participants aged 65 or more at baseline were included. Ensemble machine learning models were applied to develop a mortality prediction model. We selected three base learners, including logistic regression, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, and Categorical + Boosting, and used logistic regression as the meta-learner. The primary outcome was five-year survival. Variable importance was evaluated by the SHapley Additive exPlanations method. RESULTS The mean age at baseline was 88, and 57.8 % of participants were women. The CatBoost model performed the best among the three base learners, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) reached 0.8469 (95%CI: 0.8345-0.8593), and the stacking ensemble model further improved the discrimination ability (AUC = 0.8486, 95%CI: 0.8367-0.8612, P = 0.046). Conventional logistic regression had comparable performance (AUC = 0.8470, 95 % CI: 0.8346-0.8595). Older age, higher scores for self-care activities of daily living, being male, higher objective physical performance capacity scores, not undertaking housework, and lower scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination contributed to higher risk. CONCLUSIONS We successfully constructed and validated a few death risk prediction models for a Chinese population of older adults. While the stacking ensemble approach had the best prediction performance, the improvement over conventional logistic regression was insubstantial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiological features, clinical characteristics, and pathological characteristics of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) and identify prognostic factors. METHODS A total of 149 patients diagnosed with ALM between August 2008 and December 2019 at the National Cancer Center (NCC) of China were retrospectively analyzed. Follow-up data on patient survival status were collected. Survival curves were generated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and statistical significance was assessed using the log-rank test. Additionally, a Cox proportional hazards model was constructed to identify prognostic factors. RESULTS All patients included in this study were of Chinese ethnicity, with an average age of 52.4 ± 14.8 years (range, 15-80 years) at the time of diagnosis. No gender predilection or genetic susceptibility was observed. The plantar region was the most frequently affected site among primary lesions. Notably, only 17 (11.4%) patients reported a history of trauma. Statistical analysis revealed that a lesion duration of ≤2.5 years, Breslow thickness >4.0 mm, high mitotic rate (>6 mm-2), presence of vascular invasion, and regional lymph node metastasis were identified as independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that a lesion duration of ≤2.5 years, Breslow thickness >4.0 mm, high mitotic rate (>6 mm-2), presence of vascular invasion, and regional lymph node metastasis are significantly associated with a poorer prognosis for patients with ALM.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the relationship of macular outward scleral height (MOSH) with axial length (AL), macular choroidal thickness (ChT), peripapillary atrophy (PPA), and optic disc tilt in Chinese adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 1088 right eyes of 1088 participants were enrolled and assigned into high myopia (HM) and non-HM groups. MOSH was measured in the nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior directions using swept-source optical coherence tomography images. The clinical characteristics of MOSH and the association of MOSH with AL, macular ChT, PPA, and tilt ratio were analysed. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 37.31 ± 18.93 years (range, 18-86 years), and the mean AL was 25.78 ± 1.79 mm (range, 21.25-33.09 mm). MOSH was the highest in the temporal direction, followed by the superior, nasal, and inferior directions (all p < 0.001). The MOSH of HM eyes was significantly higher than that of non-HM eyes, and it was positively correlated with AL in the nasal, temporal, and superior directions (all p < 0.001). Macular ChT was independently associated with the average MOSH (B = -0.190, p < 0.001). Nasal MOSH was positively associated with the PPA area and the presence of a tilted optic disc (both p < 0.01). Eyes with a higher MOSH in the superior (odds ratio [OR] = 1.008; p < 0.001) and inferior directions (OR = 1.006; p = 0.009) were more likely to have posterior staphyloma. CONCLUSION MOSH is an early indicator of scleral deformation, and it is correlated positively with AL and negatively with ChT. A higher nasal MOSH is associated with a larger PPA area and the presence of a tilted optic disc. Higher MOSH values in the superior and inferior directions were risk factors for posterior staphyloma. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was registered at www. CLINICALTRIALS gov (Reg. Abstract
At present, the commonly used clinical protocols of oral cosmetic restoration are mostly based on the oral aesthetic indexes proposed by Western developed countries (referred to as Western aesthetics), which are different from the oral aesthetic indexes unique to Chinese people (referred to as Chinese aesthetics). In the design of restoration schemes and the evaluation of restoration effects, these differences have a large or small effect on the doctor-patient-technology triad. Improper handling could directly weaken the cooperation efficiency of the three parties, reduce patient satisfaction, and even lead to medical disputes in serious cases. From doing a good job of oral cosmetic restoration in China, the connotative characteristics of Chinese oral aesthetics are introduced in this paper, and the value of oral aesthetic analysis in diagnosis and treatment is discussed. The process and method of aesthetic analysis and assessment through the modified Chinese psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics questionnaire and the evaluation ruler of the expected value of oral cosmetic restoration are further introduced in detail.

Abstract
As a neural indicator of reward responsiveness (RR), reward positivity (RewP) has been demonstrated to moderate the association between stress exposure and depressive symptoms. However, extant research has primarily (a) focused on life stress rather than early maltreatment, (b) ignored the time-frequency components, and (c) has been based on a traditional perspective of diathesis stress. The present study aimed to comprehensively examine whether and how neurophysiological (RewP and its time-frequency decomposition components) and self-reported measures of RR interact with childhood emotional abuse on young adult depressive symptoms. The sample of 192 Chinese university students aged 18-25 (Mage = 21.08 ± 1.91 years; 59.4% girls) completed self-reported questionnaires of emotional abuse, depressive symptoms and RR. The RewP and its time-frequency components delta and theta were elicited via a monetary reward task. The results demonstrated that RewP significantly moderated the association between emotional abuse and young adult depressive symptoms in a differential susceptibility but not diathesis-stress manner. However, gain-related delta, loss-related theta, or self-reported RR did not drive such moderation effects. These findings were robust and survived a series of rigorous sensitivity analyses. The current findings provide preliminary evidence that heightened RewP may function as a plasticity factor moderating the association between early maltreatment exposure and depression, and highlight the effect specific to emotional abuse. However, caution should be paid to the generalizability of these findings in high-risk clinical samples, in light of the current high-functioning sample features and low rates of high symptom and abuse levels. Abstract
BACKGROUND Auriculocondylar syndrome (ARCND) is a rare congenital craniofacial developmental malformation syndrome of the first and second pharyngeal arches with external ear malformation at the junction between the lobe and helix, micromaxillary malformation, and mandibular condylar hypoplasia. Four subtypes of ARCND have been described so far, that is, ARCND1 (OMIM # 602483), ARCND2 (ARCND2A, OMIM # 614669; ARCND2B, OMIM # 620458), ARCND3 (OMIM # 615706), and ARCND4 (OMIM # 620457). METHODS This study reports a case of ARCND2 resulting from a novel pathogenic variant in the PLCB4 gene, and summarizes PLCB4 gene mutation sites and phenotypes of ARCND2. RESULTS The proband, a 5-day-old male neonate, was referred to our hospital for respiratory distress. Micrognathia, microstomia, distinctive question mark ears, as well as mandibular condyle hypoplasia were identified. Trio-based whole-exome sequencing identified a novel missense variant of NM_001377142.1:c.1928C>T (NP_001364071.1:p.Ser643Phe) in the PLCB4 gene, which was predicted to impair the local structural stability with a result that the protein function might be affected. From a review of the literature, only 36 patients with PLCB4 gene mutations were retrieved. CONCLUSION As with other studies examining familial cases of ARCND2, incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity were observed within different families' heterozygous mutations in PLCB4 gene. Although, motor and intellectual development are in the normal range in the vast majority of patients with ARCND2, long-term follow-up and assessment are still required.

Abstract
The issue of the continuing decline of rural areas caused by urbanization has become a global concern. Encouraging college graduates to return to their hometowns to start businesses is an important initiative for countries to achieve sustainable rural development. Drawing from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study introduces two additional variables: place attachment and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Through a series of three model refinements, a comprehensive theoretical framework has been formulated to elucidate Chinese college graduates' hometown-based entrepreneurial intention and behavior. The samples for this study were 1151 college graduates selected from diverse universities across China. This study aims to explore the influence of college graduates' hometown-based entrepreneurial intention using Structural Equation Modelling. This analytical approach illuminates how variables such as college graduates' place attachment, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, subjective norm for hometown-based entrepreneurship, and attitude towards hometown-based entrepreneurship affected their hometown-based entrepreneurial intention. The research findings reveal the following insights: (1) The overall levels of college graduates' place attachment and hometown-based entrepreneurial intention were relatively low. (2) College graduates' place attachment, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, subjective norm for hometown-based entrepreneurship, and attitude towards hometown-based entrepreneurship, had a positive impact on their hometown-based entrepreneurial intention. (3) College graduates' place attachment and subjective norm for hometown-based entrepreneurship had a significant impact on their hometown-based entrepreneurial intention through the mediating variable of entrepreneurial self-efficacy. This study then makes policy recommendations from theoretical and managerial aspects.

Abstract
DNA methylation is an ideal trait to study the extent of the shared genetic control across ancestries, effectively providing hundreds of thousands of model molecular traits with large QTL effect sizes. We investigate cis DNAm QTLs in three European (n = 3701) and two East Asian (n = 2099) cohorts to quantify the similarities and differences in the genetic architecture across populations. We observe 80,394 associated mQTLs (62.2% of DNAm probes with significant mQTL) to be significant in both ancestries, while 28,925 mQTLs (22.4%) are identified in only a single ancestry. mQTL effect sizes are highly conserved across populations, with differences in mQTL discovery likely due to differences in allele frequency of associated variants and differing linkage disequilibrium between causal variants and assayed SNPs. This study highlights the overall similarity of genetic control across ancestries and the value of ancestral diversity in increasing the power to detect associations and enhancing fine mapping resolution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subacromial spurs are considered the one of the pathology underlying shoulder impingement syndrome. Furthermore, few studies have focused on the morphology of the subacromial spurs in normal Chinese people. This study aimed to study the spur distribution and to illustrate the morphology of spurs, which may help guide the extent of acromioplasty. METHODS A total of 93 normal individuals were enrolled, and both shoulders of all enrolled individuals were analyzed. The subjects were divided and classified into three different groups by ages: group I = 18-40 years, group II = 41-60 years, and group III ≥ 61 years. The osteophyte distribution, osteophyte area, subacromial surface area and osteophyte area/subacromial surface area ratio were measured and illustrated using Mimics and 3-matic software. The shape of the acromion was classified according to the Bigliani and Morrison classification system. The acromial angle was also classified. Then, the relationship between osteophytes, acromial classification and acromial angle was analyzed. RESULTS Type II (curved shape) was the most common type of acromion, and the hooked shape was a rare form. A significant increase in the left subacromial surface area in males was observed in group III compared with group I (P < 0.001) and group II (P = 0.004). The total spur/subacromial area ratio was significantly higher in group II than I. An obvious increase in the right subacromial area was observed in group III compared with group I (P = 0.004). Furthermore, there was a significant increase in the right spur area (P = 0.021) and total spur/subacromial area ratio (P = 0.006) in females in group II compared with group I. Fewer spurs were observed on the left than on the right side (p = 0.0482). One spur was most common among type II acromions (29/36) (80.56%) on the left side and the right side (34/52, 65.38%). CONCLUSIONS Spurs osteophytes are mainly distributed with an irregular shape and mostly run through the medial and lateral sides of the subacromial surface in normal subjects. The characteristics of subacromial spurs are so diverse that a surgeon must conduct subacromial decompression completely based on the morphology of individual spurs.

Abstract
At present, there is no uniform standard mean of identifying handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry based on maximum or average HGS values. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the accuracy of different calculation methods in the evaluation of HGS asymmetry. Using the maximum reading of two trials from both hands (Method A) as the reference standard, the accuracy of the HGS asymmetry identified by the average value of two trials of both hands (Method B) was determined by using various indicators, including specificity, sensitivity, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), positive, and negative predictive values. Overall, 12,163 individuals were included in this study, of whom 47.61% (5791/12,163) were male. The percentages of individuals with HGS asymmetry differed as a function of age and sex when using these two different methods. When employing Method A, 38.52%, 41.57%, and 44.57% of males 45 ≤ age<60, 60 ≤ age<80, and ≥ 80 years of age exhibited HGS asymmetry as compared to 40.78%, 39%, and 39.63% of females. Using Method B, the corresponding proportions were 41.69%, 42.5%, and 40% in males and 42.01%, 41.18%, and 40.55% in females, respectively. When compared to Method A, Method B was found to be effective in identifying HGS asymmetry, with AUC values ranging from 0.844 to 0.877. However, there was only moderate agreement between the two methods in assessing HGS asymmetry. Specifically, the Kappa values for the two Methods were 0.692, 0.694, and 0.766 in males aged 45 to 60, 60 to 80, and 80 years and above, respectively. For females, the Kappa values were 0.674, 0.661, and 0.751, respectively. These results demonstrated that the maximal or average HGS values from two trials using both hands has a significant impact on the consequent identification of HGS asymmetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), has been associated with several cancer risks in observational studies, but the observed associations have been inconsistent and may face the bias of confounding and reverse causality. The potential causal relationships between IBD and the risk of cancers remain largely unclear. METHODS We performed genome-wide linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC), standard two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR), and colocalization analyses using summary genome-wide association study (GWAS) data across East Asian and European populations to evaluate the causal relationships between IBD and cancers. Sensitivity analyses for the MR approach were additionally performed to explore the stability of the results. RESULTS There were no significant genetic correlations between IBD, CD, or UC and cancers (all P values > 0.05) in East Asian or European populations. According to the main MR analysis, no significant causal relationship was observed between IBD and cancers in the East Asian population. There were significant associations between CD and ovarian cancer (odds ratio [OR] = 0.898, 95% CI = 0.844-0.955) and between UC and nonmelanoma skin cancer (OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 1.000-1.004, P = 0.019) in the European population. The multivariable MR analysis did not find any of the above significant associations. There was no shared causal variant to prove the associations of IBD, CD, or UC with cancers in East Asian or European populations using colocalization analysis. CONCLUSIONS We did not provide robust genetic evidence of causal associations between IBD and cancer risk. Exposure to IBD might not independently contribute to the risk of cancers, and the increased risk of cancers observed in observational studies might be attributed to factors accompanying the diagnosis of IBD.

Abstract
This study uses a data-driven approach to mine the distribution of personality traits among Chinese people in the Chinese social context. Based on the hypothesis of personality lexicology, word embedding technology was employed in machine learning to mine personality vocabulary from Tencent's word embedding database. More than 10,000 Chinese personality descriptors were extracted and analyzed using Gaussian Mixture Model Cluster and Hierarchical clustering analysis. The data was collected from 658 Chinese people randomly from all parts of China through an online questionnaire method. The results reveal six personality traits in the Chinese context, expanding the personality thesaurus and providing examples to illustrate each trait. The findings coincide with previous research on the five-factor model, which partially describes the personality traits of Chinese people, but does not offer a complete explanation of their typical social behavior patterns. Additionally, the study supports the notion of cultural particularity in personality traits. The approach used in this study offers a richer personality vocabulary than traditional personality mining methods, and word embedding technology captures richer semantic information in Chinese. The six Chinese personality traits identified in this study will also be used to explore how to quantify and evaluate personality traits based on word embedding and personality descriptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correlation between dental maturity and skeletal maturity has been proposed, but its clinical application remains challenging. Moreover, the varying correlations observed in different studies indicate the necessity for research tailored to specific populations. AIM To compare skeletal maturity in Korean children with advanced and delayed dental maturity using dental maturity percentile. DESIGN Dental panoramic radiographs and cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 5133 and 395 healthy Korean children aged between 4 and 16 years old. Dental maturity was assessed with Demirjian's method, while skeletal maturity was assessed with the cervical vertebral maturation method. Standard percentile curves were developed through quantile regression. Advanced (93 boys and 110 girls) and delayed (92 boys and 100 girls) dental maturity groups were defined by the 50th percentile. RESULTS The advanced group showed earlier skeletal maturity in multiple cervical stages (CS) in both boys (CS 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6) and girls (CS 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6). Significant differences, as determined by Mann-Whitney U tests, were observed in CS 1 for boys (p = 0.004) and in CS 4 for girls (p = 0.037). High Spearman correlation coefficients between dental maturity and cervical vertebral maturity exceeded 0.826 (p = 0.000) in all groups. CONCLUSION A correlation between dental and skeletal maturity, as well as advanced skeletal maturity in the advanced dental maturity group, was observed. Using percentile curves to determine dental maturity may aid in assessing skeletal maturity, with potential applications in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Abstract
Background To explore the diagnostic accuracy and the optimal cutoff value between the saline infusion test (SIT) and captopril challenge test (CCT) [including the value and suppression of plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC)] for primary aldosteronism (PA) diagnosing. Methods A total of 318 patients with hypertension were consecutively enrolled, including 126 patients with PA and 192 patients with essential hypertension (EH), in this observational study. The characteristics of patients and laboratory examinations were collected and compared. The comparison between SIT and CCT was carried by drawing the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) and calculating the area under the curve (AUC) to explore the diagnostic accuracy and the optimal cutoff value. Results The average age was 51.59 ± 10.43 in the PA group and 45.72 ± 12.44 in the EH group (p<0.05). The optimal cutoff value was 10.7 ng/dL for post-CCT PAC, 6.8 ng/dL for post-SIT PAC, and 26.9% for suppression of post-CCT PAC. The diagnostic value of post-CCT PAC was the highest with 0.831 for the AUC and 0.552 for the Youden index. The optimal cutoff value for patients who were <50 years old was 11.5 ng/dL for post-CCT PAC and 8.4 ng/dL for post-SIT PAC. The suppression of post-CCT PAC turned to 18.2% for those of age 50 or older. Conclusion Compared with SIT, CCT had a higher diagnostic value when post-CCT PAC was used as the diagnostic criterion in Chinese people, while the selection of diagnostic thresholds depended on patient age.

Abstract
Introduction An easily accessible and cost-free machine learning model based on prior probabilities of vascular aging enables an application to pinpoint high-risk populations before physical checks and optimize healthcare investment. Methods A dataset containing questionnaire responses and physical measurement parameters from 77,134 adults was extracted from the electronic records of the Health Management Center at the Third Xiangya Hospital. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and recursive feature elimination-Lightweight Gradient Elevator were employed to select features from a pool of potential covariates. The participants were randomly divided into training (70%) and test cohorts (30%). Four machine learning algorithms were applied to build the screening models for elevated arterial stiffness (EAS), and the performance of models was evaluated by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Results Fourteen easily accessible features were selected to construct the model, including "systolic blood pressure" (SBP), "age," "waist circumference," "history of hypertension," "sex," "exercise," "awareness of normal blood pressure," "eat fruit," "work intensity," "drink milk," "eat bean products," "smoking," "alcohol consumption," and "Irritableness." The extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model outperformed the other three models, achieving AUC values of 0.8722 and 0.8710 in the training and test sets, respectively. The most important five features are SBP, age, waist, history of hypertension, and sex. Conclusion The XGBoost model ideally assesses the prior probability of the current EAS in the general population. The integration of the model into primary care facilities has the potential to lower medical expenses and enhance the management of arterial aging.

Abstract
Introduction Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) had reported as a prominent role in the development of cardiometabolic diseases among Asians. Our study aims to investigate the relationship between ALDH2 polymorphism and cardiometabolic risk factors in East Asian population. Method We searched databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase updated to Oct 30th, 2023. We extracted data of BMI, Hypertension, SBP, DBP, T2DM, FBG, PPG, HbA1c, TG, TC, LDL-C and HDL-C. Result In total, 46 studies were finally included in our meta-analysis, containing, 54068 GG and, 36820 GA/AA participants. All outcomes related to blood pressure revealed significant results (hypertension OR=0.83 [0.80, 0.86]; SBP MD=-1.48 [-1.82, -1.14]; DBP MD=-1.09 [-1.58, -0.61]). FBG showed a significant difference (MD=-0.10 [-0.13, -0.07]), and the lipid resulted significantly in some outcomes (TG MD=-0.07 [-0.09, -0.04]; LDL-C MD=-0.04 [-0.05, -0.02]). As for subgroups analysis, we found that in populations without severe cardiac-cerebral vascular diseases (CCVDs), GG demonstrated a significantly higher incidence of T2DM (T2DM OR=0.88 [0.79, 0.97]), while the trend was totally opposite in population with severe CCVDs (T2DM OR=1.29 [1.00, 1.66]) with significant subgroup differences. Conclusion Our updated meta-analysis demonstrated that ALDH2 rs671 GG populations had significantly higher levels of BMI, blood pressure, FBG, TG, LDL-C and higher risk of hypertension than GA/AA populations. Besides, to the best of our knowledge, we first report GG had a higher risk of T2DM in population without severe CCVDs, and GA/AA had a higher risk of T2DM in population with severe CCVDs.Systematic Review Registration: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO, identifier CRD42023389242.

Abstract
Introduction Vaccine hesitancy, amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, is a pressing public health challenge. This study investigates the association between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preference and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy within China. Methods The study uses data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) (N = 2,690). Logistic regressions and Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method are employed to analyzed the relationship between TCM preference and vaccine hesitancy. Results The study reaffirms prior findings by revealing a robust and stable association between TCM preference and vaccine hesitancy, which remains unaffected by socioeconomic and demographic confounders, as well as institutional trust dynamics of healthcare system. Contrary to expectations, TCM enthusiasts do not exhibit vaccine hesitancy based on divergent epistemological views concerning vaccine risks and immunity acquisition compared to biomedicine. Discussion This research enriches understandings of the intricate relations between healthcare paradigms and vaccine attitudes, inviting further inquiry into the role of CAM in shaping vaccination behaviors across different cultures and contexts. The insights bear significant public health implications for enhancing vaccine acceptance and coverage, particularly among populations where CAM practices wield substantial influence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested the dual sensory loss (DSL) is linked to depression, and that they are associated with higher healthcare expenditures, respectively. However, the association between DSL, depression and healthcare expenditures remains ambiguous. OBJECTIVES The current study aims to examine the association between DSL, depression and healthcare expenditures as well as catastrophic health expenditures (CHE) among Chinese people aged 45 and above. METHODS We first utilized the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) 2018 to obtain data from a total of 13,412 Chinese individuals aged 45 and above to conduct a cross-sectional study. DSL was defined as a combined variable of self-reported vision loss and hearing loss. Depression was measured using The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). The healthcare expenditures, including outpatient out-of-pocket cost and inpatient out-of-pocket cost, were obtained from the Harmonized CHARLS section. CHE were defined as out-of-pocket (OOP) health spending equal to or higher than 40 % of a household's capacity to pay. A Tobit linear regression with three models and a path analysis were conducted to estimate the association between DSL, depression and healthcare expenditures and CHE. Then we utilized 2011CHARLS and 2018CHARLS to present a longitudinal analysis. A path analysis was conducted to estimate the association between 2011DSL, 2018depression and 2018healthcare expenditures and CHE. RESULTS Depression has a significant mediating effect between DSL and healthcare expenditures. (For outpatient OOP cost: a = 0.453, b = 23.559, c = 25.257, the proportion of mediating effect in total effect = 29.71 %; for inpatient OOP cost: a = 0.453, b = 13.606, c = 15.463, the proportion of mediating effect in total effect = 28.50 %; all P < 0.05). The mediating effect of depression also exists in the association between DSL and CHE (a = 0.453, b = 0.018, c = 0.043, the proportion of mediating effect in total effect = 15.90 %; P < 0.05). The mediation effect of depression on healthcare expenditures and CHE also exists in the longitudinal analysis using CHARLS 2011 and CHARLS 2018 (all P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS The DSL status were based on self-report and we used 2018CHARLS to conduct the study, which may cause some bias. CONCLUSION Significant mediating effect of depression exists between DSL and higher healthcare expenditures and CHE. The mental health of elder people with DSL should be focused on, and we should have an overall viewpoint on the topic of healthcare expenditures and CHE.

Abstract
The Academic Grit Scale (AGS) is a novel measure of academic-specific grit. However, its factor structure and measurement invariance have yet to be thoroughly supported. The present study tested the factor structure and measurement invariance of the AGS with a large sample of early adolescents (aged 9-14 years) from China (N = 1,894). The bifactor model showed that the AGS was predominately accounted for by the general factor rather than the domain-specific factors; the parallel model from the AGS's one-factor model showed good fit indices; thus, the AGS should be described as a univocal solution and reported as the total score. Gender and grade measurement invariance were supported at a scalar level, warranting further mean difference comparisons. In addition, academic grit was significantly associated with positive academic emotions and academic achievement, yielding evidence of good criteria-related validity. The current study contributes additional evidence to the construct validity of the Chinese version of the AGS among middle- and upper-grade primary school students in China.
