Daylight quality: high-transmittance glass versus low transmittance glass - effects on daylight quality, health, comfort and energy consumption

Introduction: This study investigated the health effects of two different architectural glass types: A two-layered low-iron high transmittance glass and a three-layered low energy glass with lower transmittance. The study investigated how these glass types affected daylight conditions in 72 residential apartments, as well as health and satisfaction of the residents.Methods: The study installed high transmittance glass (light transmittance LT:0.82) in 36 apartments and low transmittance (LT:0.74) in 36 identical apartments. The study then analyzed the light transmittance of each glass type in the laboratory and analyzed the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in eight representative apartments before and after renovation. Self-reported questionnaires were handed out and collected before and after renovation.Results: The results showed that the glass types differed significantly in measured daylight transmittance. The two-layered high transmittance glass transmitted 15% more visual light (380-750 nm) and 20% more light in the spectral range (460-480 nm), stimulating ipRGCs and circadian rhythm, when compared to three-layered low energy glass. In addition, significant differences were observed in the UV-B spectrum (280-315 nm). While two-layered high transmittance glass transmitted UV-B, three-layered low transmittance glass did not. During the 12-month study period, residents in apartments with three-layered low energy glass reported more difficulties sleeping (p = 0.05), higher satisfaction with daylight (p = 0.03) and higher satisfaction with ventilation (p = 0.04). Residents in apartments with three-layered low energy glass experienced fewer days with too cold indoor temperatures (p = 0.02), compared to residents with two-layered low-iron glass. The results of energy consumption for heating showed that two-layered low-iron glass reduced the energy consumption by 11.0%, while three-layered low energy glass reduced the energy consumption by 9.4%, compared to the year prior to renovation.Conclusion: The results contribute to a discussion about potential energy savings on one hand and potential non-energy benefits, such as daylight quality, overall health, and total economy/life cycle assessment of the built environment on the other hand. The results suggest further research performed in randomized large-scale studies.

Recent advances in microbial synthesis of free heme

Heme is an iron-containing porphyrin compound widely used in the fields of healthcare, food, and medicine. Compared to animal blood extraction, it is more advantageous to develop a microbial cell factory to produce heme. However, heme biosynthesis in microorganisms is tightly regulated, and its accumulation is highly cytotoxic. The current review describes the biosynthetic pathway of free heme, its fermentation production using different engineered bacteria constructed by metabolic engineering, and strategies for further improving heme synthesis. Heme synthetic pathway in Bacillus subtilis was modified utilizing genome-editing technology, resulting in significantly improved heme synthesis and secretion abilities. This technique avoided the use of multiple antibiotics and enhanced the genetic stability of strain. Hence, engineered B. subtilis could be an attractive cell factory for heme production. Further studies should be performed to enhance the expression of heme synthetic module and optimize the expression of heme exporter and fermentation processes, such as iron supply. Impact of high-pressure processing on hemolymph, color, lipid globular structure and oxidation of the edible portion of blood clams

Impact of high-pressure processing (HP-P) on hemolymph and lipid globular structures of the edible portion (EP) of blood clams (BC) was investigated. HP-P above 400 MPa decreased heme iron content, while upsurged non-heme iron content. Increasing pressure induced gaps and abnormal hemocyte cell arrangements. However, HP-P at 300 MPa improved and maintained total hemocyte counts, the heme iron content, and a*-value in BC-EP. For lipid globular structures, the mean diameter drastically decreased when an HP-P pressure of 600 MPa was employed. HP-P at higher pressure induced lipid oxidation, along with decreases in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as increases in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and peroxide value. FTIR spectra displayed a reduction in phosphate groups and cis double bonds in lipids from HP-P treated BC, compared to controls. Therefore, HP-P at 300 MPa is recommended for preparing ready-to-cook BC with less tissue damage and lipid oxidation.

Strong aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence of pyrene-coordination metal-organic frameworks coupled with zero-valent iron as novel accelerator for ultrasensitive immunoassay

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are excellent alternative luminophores for electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassays. However, they are inevitably limited by the aggregation-caused quenching effect. In this study, aimed at eliminating the aggregation quenching of PAHs, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-carboxybenzene)pyrene (H4TBAPy) as the ligand were exploited as a novel nano-emitter for the construction of ECL immunoassays. The luminophore exhibits efficient aggregation-induced emission enhancement, good acid-base resistance property and unusual ECL reactivity. In addition, the simultaneous use of potassium persulfate and hydrogen peroxide as dual co-reactants resulted in a synergistic enhancement of the cathodic ECL efficiency. The use of magnetic iron-nickel alloys as the multifunctional sensing platform can further enhance the ECL activity, and its enriched zero-valent iron as a co-reactant accelerator effectively drives ECL analytical performance. Profiting from the excellent characteristics, signal-on ECL immunoassays have been constructed. With carcinoembryonic antigen as the model analysis target, a detection limit of 0.63 pg/mL was obtained within the linear range of 1 pg/mL to 50 ng/mL, accompanied by excellent analytical performance. This report opens a new window for the rational design of efficient ECL illuminators, and the proposed ECL immunoassays may find promising applications in the detection of disease markers.

Dual-mode fluorimetric and colorimetric sensors based on iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots for the detection of dopamine

Determination of dopamine (DA) is crucial for its intimate relationship with clinical trials and biological environment. Herein, Fe, N co-doped carbon dots (AFC-CDs) were fabricated by optimizing precursors and reaction conditions for fluorimetric/colorimetric dual-mode sensing of DA. With synergistic influence of Förster resonance energy transfer and static quenching effect, DA significantly quenched the blue luminescence of AFC-CDs at 442 nm, the production of recognizable tan-brown complex caused evident colorimetric response, achieved the dual-mode fluorimetric/colorimetric sensing for DA. The excellent selectivity and satisfied sensitivity can be confirmed with the limit of detection at 0.29 μM and 2.31 μM via fluorimetric/colorimetric mode respectively. The reliability and practicability were proved by recovery of 94.81-101.61% in real samples. Notably, the proposed electron transfer way between AFC-CDs and DA was hypothesized logically, indicated dual-mode probe provided a promising platform for the sensing of trace DA, and could be expanded in environment and food safety.

Bioaugmentation has temporary effect on anaerobic pesticide biodegradation in simulated groundwater systems

Groundwater is the most important source for drinking water in The Netherlands. Groundwater quality is threatened by the presence of pesticides, and biodegradation is a natural process that can contribute to pesticide removal. Groundwater conditions are oligotrophic and thus biodegradation can be limited by the presence and development of microbial communities capable of biodegrading pesticides. For that reason, bioremediation technologies such as bioaugmentation (BA) can help to enhance pesticide biodegradation. We studied the effect of BA using enriched mixed inocula in two column bioreactors that simulate groundwater systems at naturally occurring redox conditions (iron and sulfate-reducing conditions). Columns were operated for around 800 days, and two BA inoculations (BA1 and BA2) were conducted in each column. Inocula were enriched from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) under different redox-conditions. We observed a temporary effect of BA1, reaching 100% removal efficiency of the pesticide 2,4-D after 100 days in both columns. In the iron-reducing column, 2,4-D removal was in general higher than under sulfate-reducing conditions demonstrating the influence of redox conditions on overall biodegradation. We observed a temporary shift in microbial communities after BA1 that is relatable to the increase in 2,4-D removal efficiency. After BA2 under sulfate-reducing conditions, 2,4-D removal efficiency decreased, but no change in the column microbial communities was observed. The present study demonstrates that BA with a mixed inoculum can be a valuable technique for improving biodegradation in anoxic groundwater systems at different redox-conditions.

DFT study of the spectroscopic behaviour of different iron(II)-terpyridine derivatives with application in DSSCs

Through a comprehensive computational analysis utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT), we clarify the electronic structure and spectroscopic properties of modified iron(II)-terpyridine derivatives, with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). We optimized a series of nineteen iron(II)-terpyridine derivatives and related compounds in acetonitrile (MeCN) as the solvent using TDDFT, evaluating their potential as dyes for DSSCs. From the conducted computations on the optimized geometries of the nineteen [Fe(Ln)2]2+ complexes, containing substituted terpyridine and related ligands L1-L19, we determined the wavelengths (λ in nm), transition energy (E in eV), oscillator strength (f), type of transitions, excited state lifetime (τ), light harvesting efficiency (LHE), frontier orbital character and their energies (ELUMO/EHOMO), natural transition orbitals (NTOs), injection driving force of a dye (ΔGinject), and regeneration driving force of a dye (ΔGregenerate). Results show that the theoretically calculated values for assessing dye efficiency in a DSSC correlate with available experimental values. The UV-visible spectra of [Fe(Ln)2]2+ exhibited a peak above 500 nm (λmax) in the visible region, attributed to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer band (LMCT) in literature, and a significant absorbance peak at approximately 300 nm (λA,max) in the UV region. The M06-D3/CEP-121G method replicated all reported λmax and λA,max values with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 21 and 18 nm, respectively. Our findings underscore the connections between electronic modifications and absorption spectra, emphasizing their impact on the light-harvesting capabilities and overall performance of DSSCs. This research contributes to the advancement of fundamental principles governing the design and optimization of novel photovoltaic materials, facilitating the development of more efficient and sustainable solar energy technologies.

A fully automatic parenchyma extraction method for MRI T2* relaxometry of iron loaded liver in transfusion-dependent patients

PURPOSE

To develop a fully automatic parenchyma extraction method for the T2* relaxometry of iron overload liver.

METHODS

A retrospective multicenter collection of liver MR examinations from 177 transfusion-dependent patients was conducted. The proposed method extended a semiautomatic parenchyma extraction algorithm to a fully automatic approach by introducing a modified TransUNet on the R2* (1/T2*) map for liver segmentation. Axial liver slices from 129 patients at 1.5 T were allocated to training (85%) and internal test (15%) sets. Two external test sets separately included 1.5 T data from 20 patients and 3.0 T data from 28 patients. The final T2* measurement was obtained by fitting the average signal of the extracted liver parenchyma. The agreement between T2* measurements using fully and semiautomatic parenchyma extraction methods was assessed using coefficient of variation (CoV) and Bland-Altman plots.

RESULTS

Dice of the deep network-based liver segmentation was 0.970 ± 0.019 on the internal dataset, 0.960 ± 0.035 on the external 1.5 T dataset, and 0.958 ± 0.014 on the external 3.0 T dataset. The mean difference bias between T2* measurements of the fully and semiautomatic methods were separately 0.12 (95% CI: -0.37, 0.61) ms, 0.04 (95% CI: -1.0, 1.1) ms, and 0.01 (95% CI: -0.25, 0.23) ms on the three test datasets. The CoVs between the two methods were 4.2%, 4.8% and 2.0% on the internal test set and two external test sets.

CONCLUSIONS

The developed fully automatic parenchyma extraction approach provides an efficient and operator-independent T2* measurement for assessing hepatic iron content in clinical practice.

Multi-process production occurs in the iron and steel industry, supporting 'dual carbon' target: An in-depth study of CO2 emissions from different processes

Reducing CO2 emissions of the iron and steel industry, a typical heavy CO2-emitting sector, is the only way that must be passed to achieve the 'dual-carbon' goal, especially in China. In previous studies, however, it is still unknown what is the difference between blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF), scrap-electric furnace (scrap-EF) and hydrogen metallurgy process. The quantitative research on the key factors affecting CO2 emissions is insufficient. There is also a lack of research on the prediction of CO2 emissions by adjusting industrial structure. Based on material flow analysis, this study establishes carbon flow diagrams of three processes, and then analyze the key factors affecting CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions of the iron and steel industry in the future is predicted by adjusting industrial structure. The results show that: (1) The CO2 emissions of BF-BOF, scrap-EF and hydrogen metallurgy process in a site are 1417.26, 542.93 and 1166.52 kg, respectively. (2) By increasing pellet ratio in blast furnace, scrap ratio in electric furnace, etc., can effectively reduce CO2 emissions. (3) Reducing the crude steel output is the most effective CO2 reduction measure. There is still 5.15 × 108-6.17 × 108 tons of CO2 that needs to be reduced by additional measures.

Tuning metal atom doped interface of electrospinning nanowires to toward fast bioelectrocatalysis

Metal doping plays a key role in overcoming inefficient extracellular electron transfer between electrode interface and electricity-producing microorganisms. However, it is unknown whether different metals play distinctive roles in the doping process. Herein, three different metal ions (Fe, Ni and Cu) are added to the spinning precursor to obtain the corresponding electrospinning metal doped carbon nanofibers. It is found that the maximum output power of iron doped carbon nanofiber anode is 641.96 mW m-2, which is better than that of nickel doped carbon nanofiber (411.26 mW m-2) and copper doped carbon nanofiber (336.01 mW m-2), as well as 7.62 times higher than that of CNF. The results proved that due to the various number and types of active sites formed, as well as the distinction in surface morphology and structure, the electronegativity of each material is different. The different bio-abiotic interface could affect the direct contact between the anode interface and the extracellular protein of electricity producing microorganisms, which leading to a significant gap in the improvement of bioelectrocatalytic performance of different metal anode materials. This work provides a synthetic idea for designing highly efficient anode materials with directional metal modification and interface regulation.

A dual-mode fluorescence and colorimetric sensing platform for efficient detection of ofloxacin in aquatic products using iron alkoxide nanozyme

Trace detection of ofloxacin (OFL) with high sensitivity, reliability, and visual clarity is challenging. To address this, a novel dual-modal aptasensor with fluorescence-colorimetric capabilities was designed that exploit the target-induced release of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) molecules from aptamer-gated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), the oxidase-like activity of iron alkoxide (IA) nanozyme, and the fluorescence attributes of core-shell upconversion nanoparticles. Therefore, the study reports a dual mode detection, with a fluorescence detection range for OFL spanning from 0.1 μg/kg to 1000 μg/kg (and a detection limit of 0.048 μg/kg). Additionally, the colorimetric method offered a linear detection range of 0.3 μg/kg to 1000 μg/kg, with a detection limit of 0.165 μg/kg. The proposed biosensor had been successfully applied to the determination of OFL content in real samples with satisfactory recoveries (78.24-96.14 %).

Fast FRAP-SIA method to determine antioxidant capacity

One of the most used methods to measure antioxidant capacity in food is the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) test, which is simple, sensitive, and economical, nevertheless has long analysis times, causing measurement errors due to the instability of the FRAP reagent due to its precipitation sequential injection analysis (SIA) is a flow technique that can correct these disadvantages because it is more quickly. So, a novel FRAP-SIA method was developed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The system was optimized using a central composite design for hydrodynamic and chemical factors, resulting in a flow rate of 35 μL s-1, and aspirate volumes of 33 μL-38 μL-33 μL for the sequence (FRAP-Antioxidant-FRAP). FRAP reagent was prepared with an HCl solution at 0.005 mol L-1, improving its stability 24 times, concerning when it is in acetate buffer at pH 3.6. The method showed excellent accuracy (RSD <3%) with a LOD of 1.0 μmol L-1 of Trolox for a linear range of 5-120 μmol L-1. The reaction time was diminished by 96% concerning the FRAP-microplate assay (from 30 min to 1.2 min). The method was applied in beverages and extracts, obtaining recovery values ranging from 91.24 to 114.22%.

Intensive ammonium fertilizer addition activates iron and carbon conversion coupled cadmium redistribution in a paddy soil under gradient redox conditions

While over-fertilization and nitrogen deposition can lead to the enrichment of nitrogen in soil, its effects on heavy metal fractions under gradient moisture conditions remains unclear. Here, the effect of intensive ammonium (NH4+) addition on the conversion and interaction of cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe) and carbon (C) was studied. At relatively low (30-80 %) water hold capacity (WHC) NH4+ application increased the carbonate bound Cd fraction (F2Cd), while at relatively high (80-100 %) WHC NH4+ application increased the organic matter bound Cd fraction (F4Cd). Iron‑manganese oxide bound Cd fractions (F3Cd) and oxalate-Fe decreased, but DCB-Fe increased in NH4+ treatments, indicating that amorphous Fe was the main carrier of F3Cd. The variations in F1Cd and F4Cd observed under the 100-30-100 % WHC treatment were similar to those observed under low moisture conditions (30-60 % WHC). The C=O/C-H ratio of organic matter in soil decreased under the 30-60 % WHC treatment, but increased under the 80-100 % WHC treatment, which was the dominant factor influencing F4Cd changes. The conversion of NH4+ declined with increasing soil moisture content, and the impact on oxalate-Fe was greater at 30-60 % WHC than at 80-100 % WHC. Correspondingly, genetic analysis showed the effect of NH4+ on Fe and C metabolism at 30-60 % WHC was greater than at 80-100 % WHC. Specifically, NH4+ treatment enhanced the expression of genes encoding extracellular Fe complexation (siderophore) at 30-80 % WHC, while inhibiting genes encoding Fe transmembrane transport at 30-60 % WHC, indicating that siderophores simultaneously facilitated Cd detoxification and Fe complexation. Furthermore, biosynthesis of sesquiterpenoid, steroid, butirosin and neomycin was significantly correlated with F4Cd, while glycosaminoglycan degradation metabolism and assimilatory nitrate reduction was significantly correlated with F2Cd. Overall, this study gives a more comprehensive insight into the effect of NH4+ on activated Fe and C conversion on soil Cd redistribution under gradient moisture conditions.

The role of ferroptosis in radiotherapy and combination therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (Review)

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly aggressive, heterogeneous tumour usually caused by alcohol and tobacco consumption, making it one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Despite the fact that various therapeutic approaches such as surgery, radiation therapy (RT), chemotherapy (CT) and targeted therapy have been widely used for HNSCC in recent years, its recurrence rate and mortality rate remain high. RT is the standard treatment choice for HNSCC, which induces reactive oxygen species production and causes oxidative stress, ultimately leading to tumour cell death. CT is a widely recognized form of cancer treatment that treats a variety of cancers by eliminating cancer cells and preventing them from reproducing. Immune checkpoint inhibitor and epidermal growth factor receptor are important in the treatment of recurrent or metastatic HNSCC. Iron death, a type of cell death regulated by peroxidative damage to phospholipids containing polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes, has been found to be a relevant death response triggered by tumour RT in recent years. In the present review, an overview of the current knowledge on RT and combination therapy and iron death in HNSCC was provided, the mechanisms by which RT induces iron death in tumour cells were summarized, and therapeutic strategies to target iron death in HNSCC were explored. The current review provided important information for future studies of iron death in the treatment of HNSCC.

Oxidized myoglobin: Revealing new perspectives and insights on factors affecting the water retention of myofibrillar proteins

The impact of oxidized myoglobin (Mb) on myofibrillar protein (MP) oxidation and water retention was investigated. Results showed that the oxidation of Mb increased with increasing concentration of oxidized linoleic acid (OLA). In the presence of 100 mmol/L OLA, hemin iron decreased by 62.07 % compared to the control group. Further investigation showed that mild oxidation of Mb (≤10 mmol/L OLA) increased the water retention and the absolute value of the zeta potential of MP, whereas excessive oxidation (>10 mmol/L OLA) decreased these properties. With the increase of Mb oxidation, the carbonyl content in MP increased, and α-helices changed to random helix. And the tertiary structure changed. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that oxidized Mb affected the water retention of MP, which was closely related to hemin iron and non-hemin iron. In conclusion, OLA induced Mb oxidation, further promoted MP oxidation and affected its water retention.

Lizhong decoction ameliorates ulcerative colitis by inhibiting ferroptosis of enterocytes via the Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE

Traditional herbal medicines have been considered as a novel and effective way to treat many diseases. Lizhong decoction (LZD), a classical prescription composed of Zingiber officinale Rosc., Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz., and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders in clinical practices for thousands of years. However, the mechanism of LZD in alleviating ulcerative colitis (UC) is still unclear.

AIM OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study was to clarify the potential molecular mechanism of LZD in improving UC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The amelioration of LZD on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC mice was evaluated by body weight, colon length, pathology of colon tissues, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and intestinal tight junction (TJ) proteins. Moreover, the gene expression profiles of UC patients were extracted to investigate potential pathological mechanisms of UC. The influence of LZD on ferroptosis was analyzed by iron load, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the expression of ferroptosis-associated proteins. Meanwhile, the inhibition of LZD on oxidative stress (OS) was assessed by the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as well as the expression levels of glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG). Furthermore, the influence of LZD on ferroptosis was assessed by inhibiting nuclear factor (erythroid-derived-2)-like 2 (Nrf2).

RESULTS

LZD showed significant therapeutic effects in UC mice, including reduction of intestinal injury and inflammation. Moreover, LZD treatment notably upregulated the expression of TJ proteins. Further investigation indicated that LZD significantly inhibited the ferroptosis of enterocytes by decreasing iron load and MDA, and increasing the expression levels of solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in colon tissues. Furthermore, the decreased activity of SOD, reduced level of GSH, and increased content of GSSG in UC mice were notably reversed by LZD. Consistent with in vivo results, LZD could markedly inhibit ferroptosis and OS in RSL3-induced Caco-2 cells. Mechanistically, LZD alleviated ferroptosis by suppressing OS through the activation of Nrf2 signaling.

CONCLUSIONS

Collectively, LZD remarkably improved intestinal pathological injury in UC mice, and its potential mechanism was the suppression of ferroptosis in enterocytes by the Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway.

In situ incubation of iron(II)-bearing minerals and Fe(0) reveals insights into metabolic flexibility of chemolithotrophic bacteria in a nitrate polluted karst aquifer

Groundwater nitrate pollution is a major reason for deteriorating water quality and threatens human and animal health. Yet, mitigating groundwater contamination naturally is often complicated since most aquifers are limited in bioavailable carbon. Since metabolically flexible microbes might have advantages for survival, this study presents a detailed description and first results on our modification of the BacTrap© method, aiming to determine the prevailing microbial community's potential to utilize chemolithotrophic pathways. Our microbial trapping devices (MTDs) were amended with four different iron sources and incubated in seven groundwater monitoring wells for ∼3 months to promote growth of nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria (NRFeOxB) in a nitrate-contaminated karst aquifer. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences implies that the identity of the iron source influenced the microbial community's composition. In addition, high throughput amplicon sequencing revealed increased relative 16S rRNA gene abundances of OTUs affiliated to genera such as Thiobacillus, Rhodobacter, Pseudomonas, Albidiferax, and Sideroxydans. MTD-derived enrichments set up with Fe(II)/nitrate/acetate to isolate potential NRFeOxB, were dominated by e.g., Acidovorax spp., Paracoccus spp. and Propionivibrio spp. MTDs are a cost-effective approach for investigating microorganisms in groundwater and our data not only solidifies the MTD's capacity to provide insights into the metabolic flexibility of the aquifer's microbial community, but also substantiates its metabolic potential for anaerobic Fe(II) oxidation.

How does exotic Spartina alterniflora affect the contribution of iron-bound organic carbon to soil organic carbon in salt marshes?

Iron-bound organic carbon (OC-FeR) is important for the stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) in salt marshes, and the Spartina alterniflora invasion reshaped local salt marshes and changed the SOC pool. To evaluate the effects of S. alterniflora invasion on the contribution of OC-FeR to SOC, we determined the OC-FeR content and soil characteristics in the 0-50 cm soil profile along the vegetation sequence, including mudflats (MF), S. alterniflora marshes established in 2003 (SA03) and 1989 (SA89), the ecotone of S. alterniflora and Phragmites australis (SE), S. salsa marsh (SS), and P. australis marsh (PA). The SOC content was 6.55-17.5 mg g-1 in the S. alterniflora marshes. Reactive iron oxides (Fed, Feo, Fep) accumulated significantly in the S. alterniflora and P. australis salt marshes. PA and S. alterniflora marshes had higher DOC contents of 0.28-0.77 mg g-1. The OC-FeR content in the 0-50 cm soil profile in these ecosystems ranged from 0.3 to 3.29 mg g-1, with a contribution to the SOC content (fOC-FeR) of approximately 11 %, which was highest in SA03 (16.3 % ~ 18.8 %), followed by SA89, SE, and PA. In addition, the molar ratios of OC-FeR to Fed were <1, indicating that the iron oxides were associated with SOC through sorption more than coprecipitation. According to the structural equation model, SOC, DOC and iron oxides were the direct driving factors of OC-FeR formation, while the vegetation zone indirectly functioned by regulating organic C inputs, iron oxide formation, and pH. This study suggested that S. alterniflora invasion promotes iron-bound organic carbon accumulation by increasing organic C inputs and regulating iron oxide formation in salt marshes, but such promotion will degenerate with development duration.

Driving mechanism of different nutrient conditions on microbial mediated nitrate reduction in magnetite-present river infiltration zone

Significant research is focused on the ability of riparian zones to reduce groundwater nitrate contamination. Owing to the extremely high redox activity of nitrate, naturally existing electron donors, such as organic matter and iron minerals, are crucial in facilitating nitrate reduction in the riparian zone. Here, we examined the coexistence of magnetite, an iron mineral, and nitrate, a frequently observed coexisting system in sediments, to investigate nitrate reduction features at various C/N ratios and evaluate the response of microbial communities to these settings. Additionally, we aimed to use this information as a foundation for examining the effect of nutritional conditions on the nitrate reduction process in magnetite-present environments. These results emphasise the significance of organic matter in enabling dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and enhancing the connection between nitrate reduction and iron in sedimentary environments. In the later phases of nitrate reduction, nitrogen fixation was the prevailing process in low-carbon environments, whereas high-carbon environments tended to facilitate the breakdown of organic nitrogen. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed a robust association between C/N ratios and alterations in microbial community composition, providing insights into notable modifications in essential functioning microorganisms. The nitrogen-fixing bacterium Ralstonia is more abundant in ecosystems with scarce organic matter. In contrast, in settings rich in organic matter, microorganisms, such as Acinetobacter and Clostridia, which may produce ammonia, play crucial roles. Moreover, the population of iron bacteria grows in such an environment. Hence, this study proposes that C/N ratios can influence Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversions and simultaneously affect the process of nitrate reduction by shaping the composition of specific microbial communities.

A two-dimensional iron-doped carbon-based nanoenzyme with catalase-like activity for the detection of alkaline phosphatase and ascorbate oxidase

Herein, we successfully synthesized two-dimensional iron-doped carbon-based nanosheets (Fe-N800 CS) with catalase-like activity through doping Fe into Zn MOF and introducing graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4). The interaction of the Fe-N800 CS with hydrogen peroxide could generated abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) and further oxidize o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) which has constant fluorescence at 560 nm. Ascorbic acid (AA) could be generated via the hydrolysis reaction between alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP). AA can be oxidized to dehy-droascorbic acid (DHA) by ROS, and then combined with OPD to generate 3-(1,2-dihydroxyethyl)furo[3,4b]-quinoxaline (QXD) with fluorescence at 440 nm, which could increase as the concentration of AA enhanced. DHA could also be generated through oxidation of AA by ascorbate oxidase (AAO). Thus, by monitoring the fluorescence ratio (I560/I440), a ratiometric fluorescence biosensing platform for ALP and AAO was established with the linear ranges in 0.2-10 U/L and 1-60 U/L, respectively. The limit of detection for ALP and AAO were 0.12 U/L and 0.59 U/L. Furthermore, the biosensing platform was successfully applied for the detection of ALP and AAO activity in human serum samples. This work provides a potential tool for future biomedical diagnostics.

Protecting against ferroptosis in hyperuricemic nephropathy: The potential of ferrostatin-1 and its inhibitory effect on URAT1

Hyperuricemic nephropathy (HN) is characterized by renal fibrosis and tubular necrosis caused by elevated uric acid levels. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent type of cell death, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases. The objective of this study was to explore the role of ferroptosis in HN and the impact of a ferroptosis inhibitor, ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). The study combined adenine and potassium oxonate administration to establish a HN model in mice and treated HK-2 cells with uric acid to simulate HN conditions. The effects of Fer-1 on the renal function, fibrosis, and ferroptosis-associated molecules were investigated in HN mice and HK-2 cells treated with uric acid. The HN mice presented with renal dysfunction characterized by elevated tissue iron levels and diminished antioxidant capacity. There was a significant decrease in the mRNA and protein expression levels of SLC7A11, GPX4, FTL-1 and FTH-1 in HN mice. Conversely, treatment with Fer-1 reduced serum uric acid, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen, while increasing uric acid levels in urine. Fer-1 administration also ameliorated renal tubule dilatation and reduced renal collagen deposition. Additionally, Fer-1 also upregulated the expression levels of SLC7A11, GPX4, FTL-1, and FTH-1, decreased malondialdehyde and iron levels, and enhanced glutathione in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, we first found that Fer-1 exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of URAT1, with the IC50 value of 7.37 ± 0.66 μM. Collectively, the current study demonstrated that Fer-1 effectively mitigated HN by suppressing ferroptosis, highlighting the potential of targeting ferroptosis as a therapeutic strategy for HN.

Ferric- and calcium-loaded red soil assist colonization of submerged macrophyte for the in-situ remediation of eutrophic shallow lake: From mesocosm experiment to field enclosure application

Eutrophication and its resulting harmful algal blooms greatly reduce the ecosystem services of natural waters. The use of modified clay materials to assist the phytoremediation of eutrophic water is a promising technique. In this study, ferric chloride and calcium hydroxide were respectively loaded on red soil for algal flocculation and phosphorus inactivation. A two-by-two factorial mesocosm experiment with and without the application of ferric- and calcium- loaded red soil (FA), and with and without planting the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans was conducted for the in-situ repair of eutrophic water and sediment. Furthermore, field enclosure application was carried out to verify the feasibility of the technology. At the end of the mesocosm experiment, the total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations in water were reduced by 81.8 %, 63.3 %, and 62.0 %, respectively, and orthophosphate phosphorus concentration in the sediment-water interface decreased by 90.2 % in the FA + V. natans group compared with those in the control group. The concentration and proportion of chlorophyll-a in cyanobacteria decreased by 89.8 % and 71.2 %, respectively, in the FA + V. natans group. The content of active phosphorus in V. natans decreased and that of inert phosphorus increased in the FA + V. natans group, compared with those in the V. natans alone group, thus may reducing the risk of phosphorus release after decomposing of V. natans. The sediment bacterial diversity index did not change significantly among treatments. Field enclosure application have also been successful, with chlorophyll-a concentration in the water of treated enclosure decreased from above 200 μg/L to below 10 μg/L, and phosphorus concentration in the water decreased from >0.6 mg/L to <0.02 mg/L. These results demonstrated that the FA in combination with submerged macrophyte planting had great potential for the in-situ remediation of eutrophic water, especially those with severe algal blooms.

Soil amendments alter cadmium distribution and bacterial community structure in paddy soils

Soil amendments play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of food production by inhibiting the transfer of heavy metal ions from soils to crops. Nevertheless, their impact on soil characteristics and the microbial community and their role in reducing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice remain unclear. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of three soil amendments (mineral, organic, and microbial) on the distribution of Cd speciation, organic components, iron oxides, and microbial community structure. The application of soil amendments resulted in significant reductions in the soil available Cd content (16 %-51 %) and brown rice Cd content (16 %-78 %), facilitating the transformation of Cd from unstable forms (decreasing 10 %-20 %) to stable forms (increasing 77 %-150 %) in the soil. The mineral and organic amendments increased the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) and plant-derived organic carbon (OC), respectively, leading to reduced Cd accumulation in brown rice, while the microbial amendment enhanced OC complexity and the abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, contributing to the decreased rice Cd uptake. The synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that soil amendments regulated soil Cd species by promoting iron oxides and OC coupling. Moreover, both organic and microbial amendments significantly reduced the diversity and richness of the bacterial communities and altered their compositions and structures, by increasing the relative abundances of Bacteroidota and Firmicutes and decreasing those of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Myxococcota. Soil microbiome analysis revealed that the increase of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota associated with Cd adsorption and sequestration contributed to the suppression of soil Cd reactivity. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential mechanisms by which soil amendments regulate the speciation and bioavailability of Cd, and improve the bacterial communities, thereby providing guidance for agricultural management practices.

Penicillium oxalicum SL2-enhanced nanoscale zero-valent iron effectively reduces Cr(VI) and shifts soil microbiota

Most current researches focus solely on reducing soil chromium availability. It is difficult to reduce soil Cr(VI) concentration below 5.0 mg kg-1 using single remediation technology. This study introduced a sustainable soil Cr(VI) reduction and stabilization system, Penicillium oxalicum SL2-nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), and investigated its effect on Cr(VI) reduction efficiency and microbial ecology. Results showed that P. oxalicum SL2-nZVI effectively reduced soil total Cr(VI) concentration from 187.1 to 3.4 mg kg-1 within 180 d, and remained relatively stable at 360 d. The growth curve of P. oxalicum SL2 and microbial community results indicated that γ-ray irradiation shortened the adaptation time of P. oxalicum SL2 and facilitated its colonization in soil. P. oxalicum SL2 colonization activated nZVI and its derivatives, and increased soil iron bioavailability. After restoration, the negative effect of Cr(VI) on soil microorganisms was markedly alleviated. Cr(VI), Fe(II), bioavailable Cr/Fe, Eh, EC and urease (SUE) were the key environmental factors of soil microbiota. Notably, Penicillium significantly stimulated the growth of urease-positive bacteria, Arthrobacter, Pseudarthrobacter, and Microvirga, synergistically reducing soil chromium availability. The combination of P. oxalicum SL2 and nZVI is expected to form a green, economical and long-lasting Cr(VI) reduction stabilization strategy.

Iron nuclearity in mineral fibres: Unravelling the catalytic activity for predictive modelling of toxicity

Chronic inflammation induced in vivo by mineral fibres, such as asbestos, is sustained by the cyclic formation of cytotoxic/genotoxic oxidant species that are catalysed by iron. High catalytic activity is observed when iron atoms are isolated in the crystal lattice (nuclearity=1), whereas the catalytic activity is expected to be reduced or null when iron forms clusters of higher nuclearity. This study presents a novel approach for systematically measuring iron nuclearity across a large range of iron-containing standards and mineral fibres of social and economic importance, and for quantitatively assessing the relation between nuclearity and toxicity. The multivariate curve resolution (MCR) empirical approach and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were applied to the analysis of UV-Vis spectra to obtain information on the nature of iron and nuclearity. This approach led to the determination of the nuclearity of selected mineral fibres which was subsequently used to calculate a toxicity-related index. High nuclearity-related toxicity was estimated for chrysotile samples, fibrous glaucophane, asbestos tremolite, and fibrous wollastonite. Intermediate values of toxicity, corresponding to a mean nuclearity of 2, were assigned to actinolite asbestos, amosite, and crocidolite. Finally, a low nuclearity-related toxicity parameter, corresponding to an iron-cluster with a lower catalytic power to produce oxidants, was assigned to asbestos anthophyllite.

The role of an Sb-oxidizing bacterium in modulating antimony speciation and iron plaque formation to reduce the accumulation and toxicity of Sb in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Microbial antimony (Sb) oxidation in the root rhizosphere and the formation of iron plaque (IP) on the root surface are considered as two separate strategies to mitigate Sb(III) phytotoxicity. Here, the effect of an Sb-oxidizing bacterium Bacillus sp. S3 on IP characteristics of rice exposed to Sb(III) and its alleviating effects on plant growth were investigated. The results revealed that Fe(II) supply promoted IP formation under Sb(III) stress. However, the formed IP facilitated rather than hindered the uptake of Sb by rice roots. In contrast, the combined application of Fe(II) and Bacillus sp. S3 effectively alleviated Sb(III) toxicity in rice, resulting in improved rice growth and photosynthesis, reduced oxidative stress levels, enhanced antioxidant systems, and restricted Sb uptake and translocation. Despite the ability of Bacillus sp. S3 to oxidize Fe(II), bacterial inoculation inhibited the formation of IP, resulting in a reduction in Sb absorption on IP and uptake into the roots. Additionally, the bacterial inoculum enhanced the transformation of Sb(III) to less toxic Sb(V) in the culture solution, further influencing the adsorption of Sb onto IP. These findings highlight the potential of combining microbial Sb oxidation and IP as an effective strategy for minimizing Sb toxicity in sustainable rice production systems.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by nanoscale zerovalent iron for removal of sulfadiazine and sulfadiazine resistance bacteria: Sulfidated modification or not

Whether it's necessary to extra chemical synthesis steps to modify nZVI in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process are worth to further investigation. The 56 mg/L nZVI/153.65 mg/L PMS and 56 mg/L sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) (S/Fe molar ratio = 1:5)/153.65 mg/L PMS) processes could effectively attain 97.7% (with kobs of 3.7817 min-1) and 97.0% (with kobs of 3.4966 min-1) of the degradation of 20 mg/L sulfadiazine (SDZ) in 1 min, respectively. The nZVI/PMS system could quickly achieve 85.5% degradation of 20 mg/L SDZ in 1 min and effectively inactivate 99.99% of coexisting Pseudomonas. HLS-6 (5.81-log) in 30 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance tests and radical quenching experiments determined SO4•-, HO•, 1O2 and O2•- were responsible for SDZ degradation. The nZVI/PMS system could still achieve the satisfactory degradation efficiency of SDZ under the influence of humic acid (exceeded 96.1%), common anions (exceeded 67.3%), synthetic wastewater effluent (exceeded 90.7%) and real wastewater effluent (exceeded 78.7%). The high degradation efficiency of tetracycline (exceeded 98.9%) and five common disinfectants (exceeded 96.3%) confirmed the applicability of the two systems for pollutants removal. It's no necessary to extra chemical synthesis steps to modify nZVI for PMS activation to remove both chemical and biological pollutants.

Blocking of FGFR4 signaling by F30 inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation through HMOX1-dependent ferroptosis pathway

Excessive activation of FGF19/fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) signaling is associated with poor survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). FGFR4 inhibitors show promise for HCC treatment. F30, an indazole derivative designed through computer-aided drug design targeting FGFR4, demonstrated anti-HCC activity as described in our previous studies. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying F30's anticancer effects remain largely unexplored. We report here that F30 could effectively induce ferroptosis in HCC cells. The concentrations of cellular ferrous iron, the peroxidation of cell membranes and the homeostasis of reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione disulfide (GSSG) were dysregulated by F30, thereby affecting cellular redox status. Induction of ferroptosis in HCC by F30 was inhibited by specific ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1. F30 upregulates various ferroptosis-related genes, including the heme oxygenase enzymes 1 (HMOX1), a key mediator of redox regulation. Surprisingly, F30-induced ferroptosis in HCC is dependent on HMOX1. The dysregulation of cellular ferrous iron concentrations and cell membrane peroxidation was rescued when knocking down HMOX1 with specific small interfering RNA. These findings shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying FGFR4-targeting F30's anti-HCC effects and suggest that FGFR4 inactivation could be beneficial for HCC treatment involving ferroptosis.

Hookworm infection as a model for deepen knowledge of iron metabolism and erythropoiesis in anemia

Over the years, there has been progress in understanding the molecular aspects of iron metabolism and erythropoiesis. However, despite research conducted both in laboratories and living organisms, there are still unanswered questions due to the complex nature of these fields. In this study we investigated the effects of hookworm infection on iron metabolism and how the hosts response to anemia is affected using hamsters infected with Ancylostoma ceylanicum as a model. Our data revealed interesting relationships between infection-induced anemia, erythropoiesis, iron metabolism, and immune modulation, such that the elevated production of erythropoietin (EPO) in renal tissue indicated intensified erythropoiesis in response to anemia. Additionally, the increased expression of the erythroferrone (ERFE) gene in the spleen suggested its involvement in iron regulation and erythropoiesis. Gene expression patterns of genes related to iron metabolism varied in different tissues, indicating tissue-specific adaptations to hypoxia. The modulation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines highlighted the delicate balance between immune response and erythropoiesis. Data derived from the investigation of changes induced in iron metabolism and stress erythropoiesis following anemia aid in our understanding of mechanisms related to blood spoliation and anemia, which could potentially be extrapolated or compared to other types or causes of anemia. These findings also contribute to our understanding of the pathophysiology of erythropoiesis in the context of blood loss.

Dissolved organic matter accelerates microbial degradation of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol in the presence of iron mineral

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron minerals widely existing in the natural aquatic environment can mediate the migration and transformation of organic pollutants. However, the mechanism of interaction between DOM and iron minerals in the microbial degradation of pollutants deserves further investigation. In this study, the mechanism of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation mediated by humic acid (HA) and three kinds of iron minerals (goethite, magnetite, and pyrite) was investigated. The results found that HA and iron minerals significantly accelerated the biodegradation process of EE2, and the highest degradation efficiency of EE2 (48%) was observed in the HA-mediated microbial system with pyrite under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, it had been demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (HO•) was the main active substance responsible for the microbial degradation of EE2. HO• is primarily generated through the reaction between hydrogen peroxide secreted by microorganisms and Fe(II), with aerobic conditions being more conducive. The presence of iron minerals and HA could change the microbial communities in the EE2 biodegradation system. These findings provide new information for exploring the migration and transformation of pollutants by microorganisms in iron-rich environments.

Pancreatic iron in pediatric transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia patients: A longitudinal MRI study

BACKGROUND

In pediatric transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) patients, we evaluated the prevalence, pattern, and clinical associations of pancreatic siderosis and the changes in pancreatic iron levels and their association with baseline and changes in total body iron balance.

PROCEDURE

We considered 86 pediatric TDT patients consecutively enrolled in the Extension-Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia Network. Iron overload (IO) was quantified by R2* magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

RESULTS

Sixty-three (73%) patients had pancreatic IO (R2* > 38 Hz). Global pancreas R2* values were significantly correlated with mean serum ferritin levels, MRI liver iron concentration (LIC) values, and global heart R2* values. Global pancreas R2* values were significantly higher in patients with altered versus normal glucose metabolism. Thirty-one patients also performed the follow-up MRI at 18 ± 3 months. Higher pancreatic R2* values were detected at the follow-up, but the difference versus the baseline MRI was not significant. The 20% of patients with baseline pancreatic IO showed no pancreatic IO at the follow-up. The 46% of patients without baseline pancreatic IO developed pancreatic siderosis. The changes in global pancreas R2* between the two MRIs were not correlated with baseline serum ferritin levels, baseline, final, and changes in MRI LIC values, or baseline pancreatic iron levels.

CONCLUSIONS

In children with TDT, pancreatic siderosis is a frequent finding associated with hepatic siderosis and represents a risk factor for myocardial siderosis and alterations of glucose metabolism. Iron removal from the pancreas is exceptionally challenging and independent from hepatic iron status.

MR Imaging-based Biomarker Development in Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients Including Brain Iron Quantification, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, and Phenomenon of Ultra-early Erythrolysis

This review article discusses the role of MR imaging-based biomarkers in understanding and managing hemorrhagic strokes, focusing on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. ICH is a severe type of stroke with high mortality and morbidity rates, primarily caused by the rupture of small blood vessels in the brain, resulting in hematoma formation. MR imaging-based biomarkers, including brain iron quantification, ultra-early erythrolysis detection, and diffusion tensor imaging, offer valuable insights for hemorrhagic stroke management. These biomarkers could improve early diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment monitoring, and patient outcomes in the future, revolutionizing our approach to hemorrhagic strokes.

Reuse of iron ore tailings as an efficient adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution

In this work, an iron ore tailings sample (IOT), collected from a tailings dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was characterized. The IOT presented point of zero charge of ∼ 6, specific surface area of 4 m2 g-1, and was mainly composed of hematite and quartz. Subsequently, experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption of an anionic dye, Direct Red 80 (DR80), and a cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MB), by the IOT, studying the effects of its dose (doseIOT) and the solution initial pH (pH0). The DR80 removal increased with the decrease of the pH0 while the opposite effect occurred in the experiments with the MB, suggesting the process is governed by the adsorption resulting from electrostatic forces. The increase in the doseIOT increased the DR80 and MB removal, which can be attributed to the greater availability of adsorption sites. Pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 > 0.9994) and the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm (R2 > 0.9842) models described well the DR80 adsorption by the IOT, being the reaction rate and maximum adsorption capacity higher at lower pH0. In a regeneration experiment, it was possible to desorb almost entirely the DR80 using a NaOH solution. Additionally, the regenerated IOT was able to adsorb the DR80, demonstrating its reusability. In a preliminary assay, the IOT decreased the colour of the textile wastewater sample at pH0 3. Therefore, the results indicate the potential use of IOT for removing electric-charged pollutants by adsorption, especially anionic ones under acidic conditions.

Facile synthesis of pyrite FeS2 on carbon spheres for high-efficiency Fenton-like reaction

Designing iron-based catalysts for Fenton-like reactions with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidants have attracted growing attentions. Herein, pyrite FeS2 supported on carbon spheres (FeS2@C) is synthesized by a facile low-temperature method. The FeS2@C/PMS system can degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) effectively in a wide pH range. Sulfate radicals (SO4·-), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radical (O2·-), and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the responsible reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for CBZ degradation. Moreover, in the simulated fixed-bed reactor, the FeS2@C/PMS system can maintain a high CBZ removal ratio of >95% for than 8 h, exhibiting its excellent stability. The outstanding performance of FeS2@C/PMS system is attributed to the presence of carbon spheres and lattice S2-, which together promote the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle. The FeS2@C is a promising catalyst due to its facile synthesis, low cost, high efficiency, and excellent stability to activate PMS for organics degradation.

Association between routine cell salvage use for lower segment caesarean section and post-operative iron infusion and anemia

PURPOSE

Intraoperative cell salvage is central to Patient Blood Management including for lower segment caesarean section. Prior to April 2020, we initiated intraoperative cell salvage during caesarean section based on risk assessment for hemorrhage and patient factors. As the pandemic broadened, we mandated intraoperative cell salvage to prevent peri-partum anemia and potentially reduce blood product usage. We examined the association of routine intraoperative cell salvage on maternal outcomes.

METHODS

We conducted a single-center non-overlapping before-after study of obstetric patients undergoing lower segment caesarean section in the 2 months prior to a change in practice ('usual care = selective intraoperative cell salvage', n = 203) and the 2 months following ('mandated intraoperative cell salvage', n = 228). Recovered blood was processed when a minimal autologous reinfusion volume of 100 ml was expected. Post-operative iron infusion and length of stay were modelled using logistic or linear regression, using inverse probability weighting to account for confounding.

RESULTS

More emergency lower-segment caesarean sections occurred in the Usual Care group. Compared to the Usual Care group, post-operative hemoglobin was higher and anemia cases fewer in the Mandated intraoperative cell salvage group. Rates of post-partum iron infusion were significantly lower in the Mandated intraoperative cell salvage group (OR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.12 to 0.80, P = 0.016). No difference was found for length of stay.

CONCLUSION

Routine cell salvage provision during lower segment caesarean section was associated with a significant reduction in post-partum iron infusions, increased post-operative hemoglobin and reduced anemia prevalence.

Electrocoagulation in treatment of municipal wastewater- life cycle impact assessment

The purpose of this study is investigation of electrocoagulation (EC) as a treatment of municipal wastewater, integrating life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) for assessing its environmental performance of investigated treatment. The study evaluated the effectiveness of EC in removing physico-chemical and microbial parameters using aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) electrodes in monopolar and bipolar modes. Bipolar arrangement of Al(-)/Al/Al/Al(+) electrodes achieved the highest removals: 70% COD, 72% BOD5 followed by complete elimination of total phosphorous, turbidity and microbial parameters. This treatment was subject to investigation of the influence of reaction time (t = 10-60 min) on removals at higher current density (CD = 3.33 mA/cm2). In order to reduce energy consumption, the same reaction time range was used with a reduced CD = 2.33 mA/cm2. Following removal efficiencies obtained: 47-72% COD (higher CD) and 53-78% (lower CD); 69-75% BOD5 (higher CD) and 55-74% CD (lower CD); 12-21% NH4- (higher CD) and 7-22% NH4- (lower CD). Total P, NO3- and NO2- compounds showed the same removals regardless the CD. Decrease in current density did not influence removals of total suspended matter, turbidity, salinity as well as microbial parameters. The bipolar arrangement of Al(-)/Al/Al/Al(+) electrodes, assuming a lower CD = 2.33 mA/cm2 and t = 30 min, was assessed with the Recipe 2016Midpoint (H) and USEtox v.2 LCIA methods to explore the environmental justification of using EC for wastewater treatment. The LCIA results revealed that the EC process significantly reduces water eutrophication and toxicity for freshwater and marine ecosystems, but has higher impacts in global warming, fossil fuel consumption, human toxicity, acidification, and terrestrial ecotoxicity due to high energy consumption. This can be mainly explained by the assumption in the study that the EC precipitate is dispersed to agricultural soil without any pre-treatment and material recovery, along with relatively high energy consumption during the process.

Development of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes to remove synthetic azo dyes from aqueous matrices

Azo dyes are largely used in many industries and discharged in large volumes of their effluents into the aquatic environment giving rise to non-esthetic pollution and health-risk problems. Due to the high stability of azo dyes in ambient conditions, they cannot be abated in conventional wastewater treatment plants. Over the last fifteen years, the decontamination of dyeing effluents by persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has received a great attention. In these methods, PS is activated to be decomposed into sulfate radical anion (SO4•-), which is further partially hydrolyzed to hydroxyl radical (•OH). Superoxide ion (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) can also be produced as oxidants. This review summarizes the results reported for the discoloration and mineralization of synthetic and real waters contaminated with azo dyes covering up to November 2023. PS activation with iron, non-iron transition metals, and carbonaceous materials catalysts, heat, UVC light, photocatalysis, photodegradation with iron, electrochemical and related processes, microwaves, ozonation, ultrasounds, and other processes is detailed and analyzed. The principles and characteristics of each method are explained with special attention to the operating variables, the different oxidizing species generated yielding radical and non-radical mechanisms, the addition of inorganic anions and natural organic matter, the aqueous matrix, and the by-products identified. Finally, the overall loss of toxicity or partial detoxification of treated azo dye solutions during the PS-based AOPs is discussed.

Seasonal health tracking of Australian Football League Women's athletes

BACKGROUND

Studies evaluating the dietary intake of Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) athletes are few and limited to the preseason. This prospective observational study aims to evaluate seasonal changes in dietary intake and health parameters of professional AFLW athletes.

METHODOLOGY

Dietary intake (3-day weighed food records), body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis, skinfolds), physical performance (global positioning system, GPS), and iron status (fasted blood sample) were assessed in 19 athletes (24 ± 5 years, 170 ± 6 cm, 22.8 ± 2.1 kg/m2) at three timepoints: start of preseason, end of preseason, and end of competition season. Sociodemographic information, sports nutrition knowledge (SNK), and risk of low energy availability (LEA) questionnaires were completed at the start of preseason.

RESULTS

Mean daily energy and carbohydrate (CHO) intakes were lower than recommendations across all seasons (p < 0.05). Mean daily CHO intake was highest at start of preseason (3.6 g/kg/day), decreased during preseason (3.1 g/day) and remained low during competition (3.2 g/day); >80% of players did not meet minimum recommendations at each timepoint (all, p < 0.05). The sum of seven skinfolds and fat mass (%) decreased during preseason (both, p < 0.05). Serum iron fell within recommended ranges for 95% of athletes at all timepoints. The total distance (m) and number of Very High Intensity (>21 km/h) efforts significantly increased across preseason and decreased during competition (all, p < 0.05). Nutrition knowledge was 'poor', and 42% of athletes were at risk of LEA.

CONCLUSIONS

AFLW athletes do not meet energy and carbohydrate requirements across the preseason and competition seasons, which may impact health and performance if deficits are sustained.

A nine-month repeat-dose intravaginal ring (Ovaprene) irritation study in sheep

OBJECTIVES

Ovaprene is a novel, investigational, intravaginal hormone-free monthly ring contraceptive designed for use in women of reproductive age to be worn over multiple weeks (one menstrual cycle). The objective of this work was to evaluate the safety of Ovaprene during a nine-month repeat-dose sheep study.

STUDY DESIGN

In addition to traditional safety endpoints such as histopathological evaluation of the sheep female reproductive tract, vaginal fluids were collected and tested for released iron over time. Also, the amount of iron in the rings was assessed following removal, and serum iron levels were measured. There were four sheep in each group (Ovaprene group and sham group).

RESULTS

There were no macroscopic clinical findings. There was minimal to mild, mixed or mononuclear cell infiltration present in all levels of vagina (cranial, mid, and caudal) from all animals including sham controls based on post-study necropsy. The female reproductive tract from animals treated with the Ovaprene ring was comparable to the sham controls. The concentrations of serum iron in sheep treated with Ovaprene ring were similar compared to a sham treated animal. The average amount of ferrous gluconate released from Ovaprene over the 29-day period of use was 175 mg of the approximately 512 mg nominally loaded into the rings.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the Ovaprene devices were well-tolerated in female sheep.

IMPLICATIONS

This study should support a chronic (e.g., one year) contraceptive efficacy study in women.

Mechanical energy triggered piezo-catalyzation of Bi2WO6 nanoplates on ferrate (Fe(VI)) oxidation in alkaline media: Performance and mechanism

Piezo-electricity, as a unique physical phenomenon, demonstrates high effectiveness in capturing the environmental mechanical energy into polarization charges, offering the possibility to activate the advanced oxidation processes via the electron pathway. However, information regarding the intensification of Fe(VI) through piezo-catalysis is limited. Therefore, our study is the first to apply Bi2WO6 nanoplates for piezo-catalyzation of Fe(VI) to enhance bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Compared to Fe(VI) alone, the Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 system exhibited excellent BPA removal ability, with the degradation rate increased by 32.6% at pH 9.0. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, Fe(VI), Fe(V), Fe(IV) and •OH were confirmed as reaction active species in the reaction, and the increased BPA removal mainly resulted from the enhanced formation of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species. Additionally, effects of coexisting anions (e.g., Cl-, NO3-, SO42- and HCO3-), humic acid and different water matrixes (e.g., deionized water, tap water and lake water) on BPA degradation were studied. Results showed the Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 system still maintained satisfactory BPA degradation efficiencies under these conditions, guaranteeing future practical applications in surface water treatment. Furthermore, the results of intermediates identification, ECOSAR calculation and cytotoxicity demonstrated that BPA degradation by Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 posed a diminishing ecological risk. Overall, these findings provide a novel mechanical energy-driven piezo-catalytic approach for Fe(VI) activation, enabling highly efficient pollutant removal under alkaline condition.

Preparation of highly adsorptive biochar by sequential iron impregnation under refluxing and pyrolysis at low temperature for removal of tetracycline

Iron-doping modification is a prevailing approach for improving adsorption capability of biochar with environmental friendliness, but usually requires high temperature and suffers from iron aggregation. Herein, a highly adsorptive biochar was manufactured via sequential disperse impregnation of iron by refluxing and pyrolysis at low temperature for eliminating tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. Iron oxides and hydroxides were impregnated and stably dispersed on the carbon matrix as pyrolyzed at 200 °C, meanwhile abundant oxygen and nitrogen functional groups were generated on surface. The iron-doped biochar exhibited up to 891.37 mg/g adsorption capacity at pH 5, and could be recycled with high adsorption capability. The adsorption of TC should be mostly contributed to the hydrogen bonding of N/O functional groups and the hydrogen bonding/coordination of iron oxides/hydroxides. This would provide a valuable guide for dispersedly doping iron and conserving functional groups on biochar, and a super iron-doped biochar was prepared with superior recyclability.

Formation mechanism of persistent free radicals during pyrolysis of Fenton-conditioned sewage sludge: Influence of NOM and iron

The present study provided an innovative insight into the formation mechanism of persistent free radicals (PFRs) during the pyrolysis of Fenton-conditioned sludge. Fenton conditioners simultaneously improve the dewatering performance of sewage sludge and catalyze the pyrolysis of sewage sludge for the formation of PFRs. In this process, PFRs with a total number of spins of 9.533×1019 spins/g DS could be generated by pyrolysis of Fenton-conditioned sludge at 400°C. The direct thermal decomposition of natural organic matter (NOM) fractions contributed to the formation of carbon-centered radicals, while the Maillard reaction produced phenols precursors. Additionally, the reaction between aromatic proteins and iron played a crucial role in the formation of phenoxyl or semiquinone-type radicals. Kinetics analysis using discrete distributed activation energy model (DAEM) demonstrated that the average activation energy for pyrolysis was reduced from 178.28 kJ/mol for raw sludge to 164.53 KJ/mol for Fenton conditioned sludge. The reaction factor (fi) indicated that the primary reaction in Fenton-conditioned sludge comprised of 27 parallel first-order reactions, resulting from pyrolysis cleavage of the NOM fractions, the Maillard reaction, and iron catalysis. These findings are significant for understanding the formation process of PFRs from NOM in Fenton-conditioned sludge and provide valuable insight for controlling PFRs formation in practical applications.

Differential surface modification mechanism of chalcopyrite and pyrite by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and its response to bioflotation

Mineral processing encounters the challenge of separating chalcopyrite and pyrite, with the conventional high alkali process characterized by issues such as large dosages of reagents, complex procedures, and environmental pollution. This study addresses this challenge by isolating and enriching Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T·f) from acidic mine drainage, employing it as a biosurfactant. The modification mechanism of T·f was thoroughly analyzed. Fe dissolution through biological oxidation formed a passivation layer (jarosite [KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6], elemental sulfur (S0), and metal sulfides (Cu/Fe-S) on the surface of minerals. Metal oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates were detected on the surface of two minerals, but the difference was that elemental sulfur (S0) and copper sulfide (Cu-S) were detected on the surface of chalcopyrite. elucidating the fundamental reason for the significant difference in surface hydrophobicity between chalcopyrite and pyrite. T·f has been successfully used as a biosurfactant to achieve copper-sulfur separation.

Fate of sulfamethoxazole in wetland sediment under controlled redox conditions

Redox condition is an important controlling factor for contaminant removal in constructed wetlands; however, the redox-sensitivity of antibiotic removal in wetland sediments under controlled conditions with specific electron acceptors remains unclear. Here, using a 14C radioactive tracer, we explored fate of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in a wetland sediment slurry under oxic, nitrate-reducing, iron-reducing, and methanogenic conditions. In the sterile treatment, unlike the comparable SMX dissipation from the water phase under four redox conditions, non-extractable residues (NERs) of SMX was highest formed in the sediment under oxic condition, mainly in sequestered and ester/amide-linked forms. Microorganisms markedly promoted SMX transformation in the slurry. The dissipation rate of SMX and its transformation products (TPs) followed the order: oxic ≈ iron-reducing > methanogenic >> nitrate-reducing conditions, being consistent with the dynamics of microbial community in the sediment, where microbial diversity was greater and networks connectivity linking dominant bacteria to SMX transformation were more complex under oxic and iron-reducing conditions. Kinetic modeling indicated that the transformation trend of SMX and its TPs into the endpoint pool NERs depended on the redox conditions. Addition of wetland plant exudates and sediment dissolved organic matter at environmental concentrations affected neither the abiotic nor the biotic transformation of SMX. Overall, the iron-reducing condition was proven the most favorable and eco-friendly for SMX transformation, as it resulted in a high rate of SMX dissipation from water without an increase in toxicity and subsequent formation of significant stable NERs in sediment. Our study comprehensively revealed the abiotic and biotic transformation processes of SMX under controlled redox conditions and demonstrated iron-reducing condition allowing optimal removal of SMX in constructed wetlands.

Exploring systemic inflammation in children with chronic kidney disease: correlates of interleukin 6

BACKGROUND

Systemic inflammation (SI) is linked to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and multiple complications. Data regarding SI biomarkers in pediatric patients are scarce. This case-control and cross-sectional study investigates the correlation of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and serum albumin to serum interleukin-6 (IL-6).

METHODS

NLR and PLR were measured in 53 patients (median age: 12.9 years), including 17 on dialysis and 36 with a median glomerular filtration rate of 39 ml/min/1.73m2, and in 25 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Iron profile, serum albumin and IL-6 were measured in the patient group. IL-6 levels > 3rd quartile were classified as high.

RESULTS

Patients presented higher NLR and PLR and particularly those on dialysis (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001). We observed a significant correlation between natural logarithm (ln) of IL-6 (lnIL-6) and NLR (rs = 0.344, p = 0.014), serum albumin (rs = -0.350, p = 0.011) and TIBC (rs = -0.345, p = 0.012) after adjustment for CKD stage, while the correlation between lnIL-6 and PLR was not significant (rs = 0.206, p = 0.151). Combination of NLR, serum albumin and TIBC predicted high IL-6 (13 patients) with an AUC of 0.771 (95% CI 0.608-0.943). Pairing of NLR ≥ 1.7 and TIBC ≤ 300 μg/dL exhibited the highest sensitivity (76.9%), while incorporating serum albumin ≤ 3.8 g/dL along with them achieved the highest specificity (95%) for detecting high IL-6 levels.

CONCLUSION

Both NLR and PLR levels increase in CKD, especially in patients on chronic dialysis. NLR, rather than PLR, along with TIBC and serum albumin, are associated with IL-6 in pediatric CKD.

Prevalence of Micronutrient Deficiencies in Preoperative Bariatric Patients in a New Zealand Tertiary Centre

PURPOSE

A potential complication of bariatric surgery is development of nutritional deficiencies. Study aims were to assess prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in preoperative bariatric patients and to examine for ethnic differences.

METHODS

Retrospective analysis of 573 patients that underwent bariatric surgery at Counties Manukau District Health Board was carried out. Mean preoperative levels of albumin, calcium, phosphate, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin, ferritin, iron, and transferrin were calculated. Chi square, fisher exact test, and multiple logistic regression was used to assess for differences in prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies across ethnicities.

RESULTS

The most common micronutrient deficiency was vitamin D (30.85%). There were statistically significant differences in vitamin D deficiency across ethnicities (p < 0.0001). Asians had the highest prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (60%), followed by Pacifica (44.57%), and Māori (31.68%). Asians were more likely to have vitamin D deficiency compared to NZ/Other Europeans (OR = 14.93, p < 0.001). Vitamin D deficiency was associated with higher BMI (OR = 1.05, p = 0.008). The second most common deficiency was iron (21.1%). Asians had the highest prevalence of iron deficiency (44%), followed by Māori (27.95%), and Pacifica (19.57%) (p = 0.0064). Compared to NZ/Other Europeans, Asians (OR = 4.26) and Māori (OR = 1.78) were more likely to be iron deficient (p = 0.004). Female gender was associated with iron deficiency (OR = 2.12, p = 0.007).

CONCLUSION

Vitamin D and iron are the most common micronutrient deficiencies among preoperative bariatric patients in this cohort and ethnic differences were seen. There may be a role for preoperative supplementation in these at-risk ethnic groups.

Influence of supplementation with iron and probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus curvatus on selected parameters of inflammatory state in rats on a high-fat iron-deficient diet

BACKGROUND

A high-fat (HF) diet, diet iron deficiency and iron supplementation may affect inflammatory parameters. Probiotics influence both iron metabolism and inflammation. We compared the inflammatory state in rats on a HF iron-deficient diet receiving oral iron, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus curvatus in different combinations.

METHODS

This was a two-stage experiment. In groups C (n = 8) and HF (n = 8), rats ate a control or HF diet, respectively, for 16 weeks. In the group HFDEF (n = 48), rats ate a HF iron-deficient diet for 8 weeks (first stage) and were subsequently divided into 6 groups (n = 8 each) receiving the following for a further 8 weeks (second stage): HFDEF - a HF iron-deficient diet; HFDEFFe - a HF iron-deficient diet with iron; HFDEFLp and HFDEFLc - a HF iron-deficient diet with L. plantarum or L. curvatus, respectively; and HFDEFFeLp and HFDEFFeLc - a HF iron-deficient diet with iron and L. plantarum or L. curvatus, respectively. Body composition analysis and blood sampling was performed. Markers of iron status and levels of total antioxidant status (TAS), C-reactive protein (CRP), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were measured in the blood.

RESULTS

TAS was higher in the HFDEF group (756.57 ± 489.53 ng mL-1) versus the HFDEFLc group (187.04 ± 47.84 ng mL-1; P = 0.022). No more differences were found between groups, or in TAS, CRP, TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations. Also, no differences were found between groups for alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, glucose, total cholesterol, low- and high-density lipoproteins and triglycerides. TAS level was positively correlated with ferritin concentration, IL-6 with TAS and TNF-α with hepcidin level.

CONCLUSIONS

Supplementation with L. plantarum, L. curvatus and iron in combinations exerts no influence on inflammatory status, lipid profile, hepatic function and serum fasting glucose in rats on a HF iron-deficient diet. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Biochar and zero-valent iron alleviated sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline co-stress on the long-term system performance of bioretention cells: Insights into microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes and functional genes

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), known as emerging contaminants, have raised widespread concern due to their potential environmental and human health risks. In this study, a conventional bioretention cell (C-BRC) and three modified bioretention cells with biochar (BC-BRC), microbial fuel cell coupled/biochar (EBC-BRC) and zero-valent iron/biochar (Fe/BC-BRC) were established and two antibiotics, namely sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC), were introduced into the systems in order to thoroughly investigate the co-stress associated with the long-term removal of pollutants, dynamics of microbial community, ARGs and functional genes in wastewater treatment. The results demonstrated that the SMX and TC co-stress significantly inhibited the removal of total nitrogen (TN) (C-BRC: 37.46%; BC-BRC: 41.64%; EBC-BRC: 55.60%) and total phosphorous (TP) (C-BRC: 53.11%; BC-BRC: 55.36%; EBC-BRC: 62.87%) in C-BRC, BC-BRC and EBC-BRC, respectively, while Fe/BC-BRC exhibited profoundly stable and high removal efficiencies (TN: 89.33%; TP: 98.36%). Remarkably, greater than 99% removals of SMX and TC were achieved in three modified BRCs compared with C-BRC (SMX: 30.86 %; TC: 59.29%). The decreasing absolute abundances of denitrifying bacteria and the low denitrification functional genes (nirK: 2.80 × 105-5.97 × 105 copies/g; nirS: 7.22 × 105-1.69 × 106 copies/g) were responsible for the lower TN removals in C-BRC, BC-BRC and EBC-BRC. The amendment of Fe/BC successfully detoxified SMX and TC to functional bacteria. Furthermore, the co-stress of antibiotics stimulated the propagation of ARGs (sulI, sulII, tetA and tetC) in substrates of all BRCs and only Fe/BC-BRC effectively reduced all the ARGs in effluent by an order of magnitude. The findings contribute to developing robust ecological wastewater treatment technologies to simultaneously remove nutrients and multiple antibiotics.

Probe-assisted detection of Fe3+ ions in a multi-functionalized nanopore

Iron is an essential element that plays critical roles in many biological/metabolic processes, ranging from oxygen transport, mitochondrial respiration, to host defense and cell signaling. Maintaining an appropriate iron level in the body is vital to the human health. Iron deficiency or overload can cause life-threatening conditions. Thus, developing a new, rapid, cost-effective, and easy to use method for iron detection is significant not only for environmental monitoring but also for disease prevention. In this study, we report an innovative Fe3+ detection strategy by using both a ligand probe and an engineered nanopore with two binding sites. In our design, one binding site of the nanopore has a strong interaction with the ligand probe, while the other is more selective toward interfering species. Based on the difference in the number of ligand DTPMPA events in the absence and presence of ferric ions, micromolar concentrations of Fe3+ could be detected within minutes. Our method is selective: micromolar concentrations of Mg2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+, and Cu2+ would not interfere with the detection of ferric ions. Furthermore, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and Mn2+ produced current blockage events with quite different signatures from each other, enabling their simultaneous detection. In addition, simulated water and serum samples were successfully analyzed. The nanopore sensing strategy developed in this work should find useful application in the development of stochastic sensors for other substances, especially in situations where multi-analyte concurrent detection is desired.
