Cadaverine and putrescine exposure influence carbon and nitrogen cycling genes in water and sediment of the Yellow River

The response patterns of microbial functional genes involved in biogeochemical cycles to cadaver decay is a central topic of recent environmental sciences. However, the response mechanisms and pathways of the functional genes associated with the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling to cadaveric substances such as cadaverine and putrescine remain unclear. This study explored the variation of functional genes associated with C fixation, C degradation and N cycling and their influencing factors under cadaverine, putrescine and mixed treatments. Our results showed only putrescine significantly increased the alpha diversity of C fixation genes, while reducing the alpha diversity of N cycling genes in sediment. For the C cycling, the mixed treatment significantly decreased the total abundance of reductive acetyl-CoA pathway genes (i.e., acsB and acsE) and lig gene linked to lignin degradation in water, while only significantly increasing the hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutylate cycle (i.e., accA) gene abundance in sediment. For the N cycling, mixed treatment significantly decreased the abundance of the nitrification (i.e., amoB), denitrification (i.e., nirS3) genes in water and the assimilation pathway gene (i.e., gdhA) in sediment. Environmental factors (i.e., total carbon and total nitrogen) were all negatively associated with the genes of C and N cycling. Therefore, cadaverine and putrescine exposure may inhibit the pathway in C fixation and N cycling, while promoting C degradation. These findings can offer some new insight for the management of amine pollution caused by animal cadavers.

Confounding effects of seasonality and anthropogenic river regulation on suspended particulate matter-driven mercury transport to coastal seas

Riverine mercury (Hg) is mainly transported to coastal areas in suspended particulate matter (SPM)-bound form, posing a potential threat to human health. Water discharge and SPM characteristics in rivers vary naturally with seasonality and can also be arbitrarily disrupted by anthropogenic regulation events, but their effects on Hg transport remain unresolved. Aiming to understand the confounding effects of seasonality and anthropogenic river regulation on Hg and SPM transport, this study selected the highly sediment-laden Yellow River as a representative conduit. Significant variations in SPM concentrations (108 - 7097 mg/L) resulted in fluctuations in total mercury (THg, 3.79 - 111 ng/L) in river water corresponding to seasonality and anthropogenic water/sediment regulation. Principal component analysis and structural equation model revealed that SPM was the essential factor controlling THg and particulate Hg (PHg) in river water. While SPM exhibited equilibrium state in the dry season, a net resuspension during the anthropogenic regulation and net deposition in the wet season demonstrated the impact of SPM dynamics on Hg distribution and transport to coastal regions. Combining water discharge, SPM, and Hg concentrations, a modified model was developed to quantify Hg flux (2256 kg), over 98% of which was in particulate phase.

Fate of pharmaceutical residue in two Romanian rivers receiving treated water: Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment

This study presents the first set of data on the removal of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine H2 receptor antagonists (HRAs) and their transformation products in two Romanian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), as well as the impact of these organic pollutants on freshwater receiving effluents. The research investigated eight target pharmaceuticals and three metabolites using a newly developed and validated Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. The combined determination had a range of quantification limits varying from 0.13 ng/L to 0.18 ng/L for surface water and from 0.28 ng/L to 0.43 ng/L for wastewater. All analytes except cimetidine and 5-hydroxy-omeprazole were identified in water samples. The study found similar overall removal efficiencies for both WWTPs (43.2 % for Galati and 51.7 % for Ramnicu-Valcea). The research also showed that ranitidine and omeprazole could pose a low to high ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The findings suggest that the treatment stages used in the two Romanian WWTPs are insufficient to remove the target analytes completely, leading to environmental risks associated with the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in effluents and freshwater.

Assessing pesticide residues occurrence and risks in water systems: A Pan-European and Argentina perspective

Freshwater ecosystems face a particularly high risk of biodiversity loss compared to marine and terrestrial systems. The use of pesticides in agricultural fields is recognized as a relevant stressor for freshwater environments, exerting a negative impact worldwide on the overall status and health of the freshwater communities. In the present work, part of the Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, the occurrence of 193 pesticide residues was investigated in 64 small water bodies of distinct typology (creeks, streams, channels, ditches, rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs), located in regions with high agricultural activity in 10 European countries and in Argentina. Mixtures of pesticide residues were detected in all water bodies (20, median; 8-40 min-max). Total pesticide levels found ranged between 6.89 and 5860 ng/L, highlighting herbicides as the dominant type of pesticides. Glyphosate was the compound with the highest median concentration followed by 2,4-D and MCPA, and in a lower degree by dimethomorph, fluopicolide, prothioconazole and metolachlor(-S). Argentina was the site with the highest total pesticide concentration in water bodies followed by The Netherlands, Portugal and France. One or more pesticides exceeded the threshold values established in the European Water Framework Directive for surface water in 9 out of 11 case study sites (CSS), and the total pesticide concentration surpassed the reference value of 500 ng/L in 8 CSS. Although only 5 % (bifenthrin, dieldrin, fipronil sulfone, permethrin, and terbutryn) of the individual pesticides denoted high risk (RQ > 1), the ratios estimated for pesticide mixtures suggested potential environmental risk in the aquatic compartment studied.

The composition and differences of antimony isotopic in sediments affected by the world's largest antimony deposit zone

Antimony (Sb) isotopic fingerprinting is a novel technique for stable metal isotope analysis, but the use of this technique is still limited, especially in sediments. In this study, the world's most important Sb mineralization belt (the Xikuangshan mineralization belt) was taken as the research object and the Sb isotopic composition and Sb enrichment characteristics in the sediments of water systems from different Sb mining areas located in the Zijiang River (ZR) Basin were systematically studied. The results showed that the ε123Sb values in the sediments of the ZR and its tributaries, such as those near the Longshan Sb-Au mine, the Xikuangshan Sb mine, and the Zhazixi Sb mine, were 0.50‒3.13 ε, 2.31‒3.99 ε, 3.12‒5.63 ε and 1.14‒2.91 ε, respectively, and there were obvious changes in Sb isotopic composition. Antimony was mainly enriched in the sediments due to anthropogenic sources. Dilution of Sb along the river and adsorption of Sb to Al-Fe oxides in the sediment did not lead to obvious Sb isotopic fractionation in the sediment, indicating that the Sb isotopic signature was conserved during transport along the river. The Sb isotopic signatures measured in mine-affected streams may have differed from those in the original Sb ore, and further investigation of Sb isotopic fingerprints from other possible sources and unknown geochemical processes is needed. This study reveals that the apparent differences in ε123Sb values across regions make Sb isotopic analysis a potentially suitable tool for tracing Sb sources and biogeochemical processes in the environment.

A multi-scenario risk assessment strategy applied to mixtures of chemicals of emerging concern in the River Aconcagua basin in Central Chile

Environmental risk assessments strategies that account for the complexity of exposures are needed in order to evaluate the toxic pressure of emerging chemicals, which also provide suggestions for risk mitigation and management, if necessary. Currently, most studies on the co-occurrence and environmental impacts of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) are conducted in countries of the Global North, leaving massive knowledge gaps in countries of the Global South. In this study, we implement a multi-scenario risk assessment strategy to improve the assessment of both the exposure and hazard components in the chemical risk assessment process. Our strategy incorporates a systematic consideration and weighting of CECs that were not detected, as well as an evaluation of the uncertainties associated with Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSARs) predictions for chronic ecotoxicity. Furthermore, we present a novel approach to identifying mixture risk drivers. To expand our knowledge beyond well-studied aquatic ecosystems, we applied this multi-scenario strategy to the River Aconcagua basin of Central Chile. The analysis revealed that the concentrations of CECs exceeded acceptable risk thresholds for selected organism groups and the most vulnerable taxonomic groups. Streams flowing through agricultural areas and sites near the river mouth exhibited the highest risks. Notably, the eight risk drivers among the 153 co-occurring chemicals accounted for 66-92 % of the observed risks in the river basin. Six of them are pesticides and pharmaceuticals, chemical classes known for their high biological activity in specific target organisms.

Long-term recovery dynamics determined by the degree of the disturbance - Ten years tracking of aquatic macroinvertebrate recolonisation after an industrial disaster (Red Sludge Disaster, Hungary)

A ten-year-long examination of macroinvertebrate community recovery was conducted following a catastrophic spill of highly alkaline red sludge (pH >13) into lowland streams. Our primary objective was to compare recovery patterns after coarse- and fine-grain disturbances, focusing on two aspects: i) trend analysis to reveal long-term changes of six community parameters, and ii) variation analyses to assess parameter changes over time. We conducted statistical analysis on long-term data series of macroinvertebrates obtained from quantitative samples collected at four sections with varying degrees of disturbance along the impacted stream sections. We developed a comprehensive theoretical framework comprising a series of sequential phases: Ramp-up, Overshoot, and Oscillation Phases. i) A trend analysis revealed that disturbances show a gradual recovery pattern, while variance analyses showed an asymptotic convergence to an equilibrium. ii) Evaluating these trends across phases unveiled that the initial recovery phase exhibited a steep trajectory, lasting 4-9 months, irrespective of disturbance severity. Coarse-grain disturbances induced a remarkable Overshoot phenomenon across all community metrics. The more severe the disturbance, the greater the height and duration of the Overshoot. Our results suggest that the presence or absence of Overshoot can serve as an indicator for coarse-grain disturbances in the context of large and infrequent disturbances (LID). The entire recovery process lasts for 2.5-3 years irrespective of the severity of the LID. In conclusion, a minimum survey duration of two and half years is deemed imperative to capture the phases of recovery, and changes associated with LID are not expected to extend beyond the three-year threshold. The theoretical framework, including Overshoot parameters, may assist future studies in comparing recovery patterns of different LID types. Furthermore, our theoretical framework is likely to be applicable to other groups of organisms given a sufficiently long monitoring of recovery, influenced also by the length of reproductive cycles.

Temporal and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Danube River in Hungary

The Danube is a significant transboundary river on a global scale, with several tributaries. The effluents from industrial operations and wastewater treatment plants have an impact on the river's aquatic ecosystem. These discharges provide a significant threat to aquatic life by deteriorating the quality of water and sediment. Hence, a total of 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) compounds were analyzed at six locations along the river, covering a period of 12 months. The objective was to explore the temporal and spatial fluctuations of these chemicals in both water and sediment. The study revealed a significant fluctuation in the concentration of PAHs in water throughout the year, with levels ranging from 224.8 ng/L during the summer to 365.8 ng/L during the winter. Similarly, the concentration of PAHs in sediment samples varied from 316.7 ng/g in dry weight during the summer to 422.9 ng/g in dry weight during the winter. According to the Europe Drinking Water Directive, the levels of PAHs exceeded the permitted limit of 100 ng/L, resulting in a 124.8% rise in summer and a 265.8% increase in winter. The results suggest that the potential human-caused sources of PAHs were mostly derived from pyrolytic and pyrogenic processes, with pyrogenic sources being more dominant. Assessment of sediment quality standards (SQGs) showed that the levels of PAHs in sediments were below the Effect Range Low (ERL), except for acenaphthylene (Acy) and fluorene (Fl) concentrations. This suggests that there could be occasional biological consequences. The cumulative Individual Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) exceeds 1/104 for both adults and children in all sites.

Effect of seasonality and estuarine waters on the phytoplankton of the Guamá River (Belém, Amazon, Brazil)

This study aimed to analyze the application of the Phytoplankton Community Index-PCI and Functional Groups-FG in determining the water quality of the Guamá River (Pará, Amazônia, Brazil). Samplings occurred monthly for analyses of phytoplankton and physical and chemical parameters, for two years, at the station where water was collected for human supply consumption. Seasonality influenced electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, transparency, winds, true color, and N-ammoniacal. The ebb tide showed high turbidity and suspended solids. The density varied seasonally with the highest values occurring in September and December (61.1 ind mL-1 and 60.2 ind mL-1, respectively). Chlorophyll-a was more elevated in December (21.0 ± 4.7 µg L-1) and chlorophyll-c higher in relation to clorophyll- b indicated the dominance of diatoms. Functional Group P prevailed in the study months. Through the PCI índex the waters of Guamá River varied from reasonable to excellent and the TSI ranged from oligo to mesotrophic. The use of Functional Groups proved to be a promising tool in the determination of water quality since it covered the most abundant species in the Environment, but the PCI is not adequate to characterize Amazonian white-waters rivers, which have diatoms as the leading dominant group.

Prediction of HC5s for phthalate esters by use of the QSAR-ICE model and ecological risk assessment in Chinese surface waters

Due to their endocrine-disrupting effects and the risks posed in surface waters, in particular by chronic low-dose exposure to aquatic organisms, phthalate esters (PAEs) have received significant attention. However, most assessments of risks posed by PAEs were performed at a selection level, and thus limited by empirical data on toxic effects and potencies. A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was constructed to estimate hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected PAEs to aquatic organisms, then they were used to conduct a multiple-level environmental risk assessment for PAEs in surface waters of China. Values of hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC5s), based on acute lethality, estimated by use of the QSAR-ICE model were within 1.25-fold of HC5 values derived from empirical data on toxic potency, indicating that the QSAR-ICE model predicts the toxicity of these three PAEs with sufficient accuracy. The five selected PAEs may be commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and μg/L. Risk quotients according to median concentrations of the five PAEs ranged from 3.24 for di(2-ethylhexhyl) phthalate (DEHP) to 4.10 × 10-3 for dimethyl phthalate (DMP). DEHP and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) had risks to the most vulnerable aquatic biota, with the frequency of exceedances of the predicted no-effect concentration (PNECs) of 75.5% and 38.0%, respectively. DEHP and DBP were identified as having "high" or "moderate" risks. Results of the joint probability curves (JPC) method indicated DEHP posed "intermediate" risk to freshwater species with a maximum risk product of 5.98%. The multiple level system introduced in this study can be used to prioritize chemicals and other new pollutant in the aquatic ecological.

Selected legacy and emerging organic contaminants in sediments of China's Yangtze - the world's third longest river: Response to anthropogenic activities

To explore contaminant concerns as a result of anthropogenic disturbance of the river system, this study provided the first extensive investigation of the contamination profiles, possible driving factors, and ecological risks of 40 target compounds including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), neonicotinoid pesticides (NNIs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments of the whole Yangtze River (the world's third longest river). Rainfall-induced changes in aquatic microbial communities and stability of dissolved organic matter: Insight from a Fen river analysis

Microbial communities are pivotal in aquatic ecosystems, as they affect water quality, energy dynamics, nutrient cycling, and hydrological stability. This study explored the effects of rainfall on hydrological and photosynthetic parameters, microbial composition, and functional gene profiles in the Fen River. Our results demonstrated that rainfall-induced decreases in stream temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and dissolved organic carbon concentrations. In contrast, rainfall increased total dissolved solids, salinity, and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations. A detailed microbial community structure analysis revealed that Cyanobacteria was the dominant microbial taxon in the Fen River, accounting for approximately 75% and 25% of the microalgal and bacterial communities, respectively. The abundance of Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta increased by 47.66% and 29.92%, respectively, whereas the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes decreased by 37.55% under rainfall conditions. Stochastic processes predominantly affected the assembly of the bacterial community on rainy days. Functional gene analysis revealed variations in bacterial functions between sunny (Sun) and rainy (Rain) conditions, particularly in genes associated with the carbon cycle. The 3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] reductase gene was more abundant in the Fen River bacterial community. Particular genes involved in metabolism and environmental information processing, including the acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase (atoB), enoyl-CoA hydratase (paaF), and branched-chain amino acid transport system gene (livK), which are integral to environmental information processing, were more abundant in Sun than the Rain conditions. In contrast, the phosphate transport system gene, the galactose metabolic gene, and the pyruvate metabolic gene were more abundant in Rain. The excitation-emission matrix analysis with parallel factor analysis identified four fluorescence components (C1-C4) in the river, which were predominantly protein- (C1) and humic-like (C2-C4) substances. Rainfall affected organic matter production and transport, leading to changes in the degradation and stability of dissolved organic matter. Overall, this study offers insight into how rainfall affects aquatic ecosystems.

Presence of pharmaceutical contaminants of emerging concerns in two rivers of western Cuba and their relationship with the extracellular enzymatic activity of microbial communities

In recent years, the concern derived from the presence of emerging contaminants in the environment and the possible effects on the One Health trilogy has increased. This study determined the concentration of pharmaceutical contaminants of emerging concern and their relationship with the extracellular enzymatic activity of microbial communities from two rivers in western Cuba. Two sampling stations were analyzed; one in the Almendares River (urban) and the other in the San Juan River (rural), taking into account the pollution sources that arrive at these stations and previous physicochemical characterizations. Extracellular protease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lipase, and catalase activities in water and sediments were determined and correlated with contaminants of emerging concern determined by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. This study evidenced the presence of different pharmaceutical contaminants found in the categories of antihypertensives, stimulants, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics in both rivers. Concentrations of contaminants of emerging concern were greater in the Almendares River compared to the San Juan River. In addition, through the canonical redundancy analysis, the influence of these contaminants on the extracellular enzymatic activities of microbial communities was documented, where in most cases they inhibit protease, phosphatase, and lipase activities and enhance catalase activity in response to oxidative stress. The present investigation constitutes the first report in Cuba of the presence of pharmaceutical contaminants of emerging concern and one of the few works that exist in the Latin American region.

Occurrence, source apportionment, and ecological risk of legacy and emerging per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the Dahei river basin of a typical arid region in China

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are artificial chemicals with broad commercial and industrial applications. Many studies about PFASs have been conducted in densely industrial and populated regions. However, fewer studies have focused on the PFASs' status in a typical arid region. Here, we investigated 30 legacy and emerging PFASs in surface water from the mainstream and tributaries of the Dahei River. Our results revealed that total PFASs concentrations (∑30PFASs) in water ranged from 3.13 to 289.1 ng/L (mean: 25.40 ng/L). Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) had the highest mean concentration of 2.44 ng/L with a 100% detection frequency (DF), followed by perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) (mean concentration: 1.34 ng/L, DF: 59.26%). Also, perfluorohexane sulfonate (DF: 44.44%), perfluorobutane sulfonate (DF: 88.89%), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) (DF: 92.59%) had mean concentrations of 12.94, 2.00, and 1.05 ng/L, respectively. Source apportionment through ratio analysis and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression analysis showed that treated or untreated sewage, aqueous film-forming foam, degradation of precursors, and fluoropolymer production were the primary sources. The PFOS alternatives were more prevalent than those of PFOA. Conductivity, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a positively correlated with Σ30PFASs and total perfluoroalkane sulfonates concentrations. Furthermore, ecological risk assessment showed that more attention should be paid to perfluorooctadecanoic acid, perfluorohexadecanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonate, perfluorohexane sulfonate, and (6:2 and 6:2/8:2) polyfluoroalkyl phosphate mono- and di-esters. The mass load of PFASs to the Yellow River was 1.28 kg/year due to the low annual runoff in the Dahei River in the arid region. This study provides baseline data for PFASs in the Dahei River that can aid in the development of effective management strategies for controlling PFASs pollution in typical arid regions in China.

Systematic tracking of nitrogen sources in complex river catchments: Machine learning approach based on microbial metagenomics

Tracking nitrogen pollution sources is crucial for the effective management of water quality; however, it is a challenging task due to the complex contaminative scenarios in the freshwater systems. The contaminative pattern variations can induce quick responses of aquatic microorganisms, making them sensitive indicators of pollution origins. In this study, the soil and water assessment tool, accompanied by a detailed pollution source database, was used to detect the main nitrogen pollution sources in each sub-basin of the Liuyang River watershed. Thus, each sub-basin was assigned to a known class according to SWAT outputs, including point source pollution-dominated area, crop cultivation pollution-dominated area, and the septic tank pollution-dominated area. Based on these outputs, the random forest (RF) model was developed to predict the main pollution sources from different river ecosystems using a series of input variable groups (e.g., natural macroscopic characteristics, river physicochemical properties, 16S rRNA microbial taxonomic composition, microbial metagenomic data containing taxonomic and functional information, and their combination). The accuracy and the Kappa coefficient were used as the performance metrics for the RF model. Compared with the prediction performance among all the input variable groups, the prediction performance of the RF model was significantly improved using metagenomic indices as inputs. Among the metagenomic data-based models, the combination of the taxonomic information with functional information of all the species achieved the highest accuracy (0.84) and increased median Kappa coefficient (0.70). Feature importance analysis was used to identify key features that could serve as indicators for sudden pollution accidents and contribute to the overall function of the river system. The bacteria Rhabdochromatium marinum, Frankia, Actinomycetia, and Competibacteraceae were the most important species, whose mean decrease Gini indices were 0.0023, 0.0021, 0.0019, and 0.0018, respectively, although their relative abundances ranged only from 0.0004 to 0.1 %. Among the top 30 important variables, functional variables constituted more than half, demonstrating the remarkable variation in the microbial functions among sites with distinct pollution sources and the key role of functionality in predicting pollution sources. Many functional indicators related to the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, such as K24693, K25621, K16048, and K14952, emerged as significant important factors in distinguishing nitrogen pollution origins. With the shortage of pollution source data in developing regions, this suggested approach offers an economical, quick, and accurate solution to locate the origins of water nitrogen pollution using the metagenomic data of microbial communities.

Identify organic contaminants of high-concern based on non-targeted toxicity testing and non-targeted LC-HRMS analysis in tap water and source water along the Yangtze River

Many organic pollutants were detected in tap water (TW) and source water (SW) along the Yangtze River. However, the potential toxic effects and the high-concern organics (HCOs) which drive the effect are still unknown. Here, a non-targeted toxicity testing method based on the concentration-dependent transcriptome and non-targeted LC-HRMS analysis combining tiered filtering were used to reveal the overall biological effects and chemical information. Subsequently, we developed a qualitative pathway-structure relationship (QPSR) model to effectively match the biological and chemical information and successfully identified HCOs in TW and SW along the Yangtze River by potential substructures of HCOs. Non-targeted toxicity testing found that the biological potency of both TW and SW was stronger in the downstream of the Yangtze River, and disruption of the endocrine system and cancer were the main drivers of the effect. In addition, non-targeted LC-HRMS analysis combined with retention time prediction results identified 3220 and 631 high-confidence compound structures in positive and negative ion modes, respectively. Then, QPSR model was further implied and identified a total of 103 HCOs, containing 35 industrial chemicals, 30 PPCPs, 26 pesticides, and 12 hormones in TW and SW, respectively. Among them, the neuroactive and hormonal compounds oxoamide, 8-iso-16-cyclohexyl-tetranor prostaglandin E2, E Keppra, and Tocris-0788 showed the highest frequency of detection, which were identified in more than 1/3 of the samples. The strategy of combining non-targeted toxicity testing and non-targeted LC-HRMS analysis will support comprehensive biological effect assessment, identification of HCOs, and risk control of mixtures.

Machine learning-based soil quality assessment for enhancing environmental monitoring in iron ore mining-impacted ecosystems

In November 2015, a catastrophic rupture of the Fundão dam in Mariana (Brazil), resulted in extensive socio-economic and environmental repercussions that persist to this day. In response, several reforestation programs were initiated to remediate the impacted regions. However, accurately assessing soil health in these areas is a complex endeavor. This study employs machine learning techniques to predict soil quality indicators that effectively differentiate between the stages of recovery in these areas. For this, a comprehensive set of soil parameters, encompassing 3 biological, 16 chemical, and 3 physical parameters, were evaluated for samples exposed to mining tailings and those unaffected, totaling 81 and 6 samples, respectively, which were evaluated over 2 years. The most robust model was the decision tree with a restriction of fewer levels to simplify the tree structure. In this model, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Base Saturation (BS), and Effective Cation Exchange Capacity (eCEC) emerged as the most pivotal factors influencing model fitting. This model achieved an accuracy score of 92% during training and 93% during testing for determining stages of recovery. The model developed in this study has the potential to revolutionize the monitoring efforts conducted by regulatory agencies in these regions. By reducing the number of parameters that necessitate evaluation, this enhanced efficiency promises to expedite recovery monitoring, simultaneously enhancing cost-effectiveness while upholding the analytical rigor of assessments.

Aerosol liquid water in PM2.5 and its roles in secondary aerosol formation at a regional site of Yangtze River Delta

Aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) plays an important role in secondary aerosol formation. In this study, a whole year field campaign was conducted at Shanxi in north Zhejiang Province during 2021. ALWC estimated by ISORROPIA-II was then investigated to explore its characteristics and relationship with secondary aerosols. ALWC exhibited a highest value in spring (66.38 µg/m3), followed by winter (45.08 µg/m3), summer (41.64 µg/m3), and autumn (35.01 µg/m3), respectively. It was supposed that the secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) were facilitated under higher ALWC conditions (RH > 80%), while the secondary organic species tended to form under lower ALWC levels. Higher RH (> 80%) promoted the NO3- formation via gas-particle partitioning, while SO42- was generated at a relative lower RH (> 50%). The ALWC was more sensitive to NO3- (R = 0.94) than SO42- (R = 0.90). Thus, the self-amplifying processes between the ALWC and SIA enhanced the particle mass growth. The sensitivity of ALWC and OX (NO2 + O3) to secondary organic carbon (SOC) varied in different seasons at Shanxi, more sensitive to aqueous-phase reactions (daytime R = 0.84; nighttime R = 0.54) than photochemical oxidation (daytime R = 0.23; nighttime R = 0.41) in wintertime with a high level of OX (daytime: 130-140 µg/m3; nighttime: 100-140 µg/m3). The self-amplifying process of ALWC and SIA and the aqueous-phase formation of SOC will enhance aerosol formation, contributing to air pollution and reduction of visibility.

Spatial distributions and temporal trends (2009-2020) of chemical mixtures in streams and rivers across Lombardy region (Italy)

Chemical mixtures in the environment are of increasing concern in the scientific community and regulators. Indeed, evidence indicates that aquatic wildlife and humans can be simultaneously and successively exposed to multiple chemicals mainly originating from different anthropic sources by direct uptake from water and indirectly via eating aquatic organisms. This study analyses a large set of sampling data referring to the entire Lombardy region, the most industrialised and at the same time the most important agriculture area in Italy, investigating the presence and potential effects of chemical mixtures in surface water bodies. We enriched and further developed an approach based on a previous work, where the overall mixture toxicity was evaluated for three representative aquatic organisms (algae, Daphnia, fish) using the concentration addition model to combine exposure with ecotoxicological data. The calculation of the mixture toxicity has been realised for two scenarios, namely best- and worst-case scenarios. The former considered only quantified compounds in the monitoring campaign, while the latter also included substances with concentrations below the limit of quantification (LoQ). Differences between the two scenario results established the potential toxicity range. Our findings revealed that differences were minimal when the calculated toxicity in the best-case scenario indicated potential risk and, on the contrary, they suggest that the worst-case scenario is overly conservative; we could also state that including substances with concentrations below the LoQ when calculating the overall toxicity of the mixture is useless and then we focused solely on the best-case scenario. The analysis of spatial and temporal risk trends together with contaminant types and target organisms highlighted specific clusters of contamination. Finally, in several cases, our study found that only few compounds were responsible for the majority of mixture toxicity.

Pesticides in surface water of the Ondas river watershed, western Bahia, Brazil: Spatial-seasonal distribution and risk assessment

This study investigated the occurrence and seasonal distribution of different classes of pesticides in surface waters of the Ondas River Watershed, as well as potential risks to the aquatic health and human water consumption in the western region of Bahia state, Brazil. Two gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analytical methods were applied to monitor 34 pesticides in water samples collected during both the dry and rainy seasons at 17 sites. Upon individual analysis, only γ-HCH, methoxychlor, demeton-S, methyl parathion, fenitrothion, chlorpyrifos, and azoxystrobin exhibited statistically significant differences between seasons. During rainy season, concentration medians of residues were higher for γ-HCH (74.7 ng L-1), methoxychlor (25.1 ng L-1), and azoxystrobin (47.2 ng L-1), potentially linked to historical contamination or illegal use. Conversely, pesticides like methyl parathion, fenitrothion, and chlorpyrifos, belonging to the organophosphate class, showed higher concentration medians in the dry period, measuring 75.1, 5.50, and 10.8 ng L-1, respectively, probably due to region crop activities. The risk quotient (RQ) assessment for aquatic life indicated that 59.0% of the samples in the dry season and 76.0% in the rainy season had RQ values greater than one, signifying a critical scenario for species conservation. Regarding human consumption, elevated risks were observed for heptachlor in both sampling periods and for azoxystrobin during the rainy season, surpassing RQ levels above 1, indicating danger in untreated water ingestion. Additionally, 24.0% and 53.0% of the samples in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively, contained at least one pesticide exceeding the EU resolution limit (100 ng L-1). Therefore, considering this information, implementing mitigation measures to avoid the river's contamination becomes imperative.

Two-stage channels can enhance local biodiversity in agricultural landscapes

Field drainage causes habitat loss, alters natural flow regimes, and impairs water quality. Still, drainage ditches often are last remnants of aquatic and wetland habitats in agricultural landscapes and as such, can be important for local biodiversity. Two-stage channels are considered as a greener choice for conventional ditches, as they are constructed to mimic the structure of natural lowland streams providing a channel for drainage water and mechanisms to decrease diffuse loading. Two-stage channels could also benefit local biodiversity and ecosystem functions, but existing information on their ecological benefits is scarce and incomplete. We collected environmental and biological data from six agricultural stream systems in Finland each with consequent sections of a conventional ditch and a two-stage channel to study the potential of two-stage channels to enhance aquatic and riparian biodiversity and ecological functions. Biological data included samples of stream invertebrates, diatoms and plants and riparian beetles and plants. Overall, both section types were highly dominated by few core taxa for most of the studied organism groups. Riparian plant and invertebrate communities seemed to benefit from the two-stage channel structure with adjacent floodplains and drier ditch banks. In addition, two-stage channel sections had higher aquatic plant diversity, algal productivity, and decomposition rate, but lower stream invertebrate and diatom diversity. Two-stage channel construction did not diversify the structure of stream channels which is likely one explanation for the lack of positive effects on benthic diversity. However, both section types harbored unique taxa found only in one of the two types in all studied organism groups resulting in higher local gamma diversity. Thus, two-stage channels enhanced local biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Improvements especially in aquatic biodiversity might be achieved by increasing the heterogeneity of in-stream habitat structure and with further efforts to decrease nutrient and sediment loads.

Comprehensive Assessment of Environmental Emissions, Fate, and Risks of Veterinary Antibiotics in China: An Environmental Fate Modeling Approach

China is one of the major global consumers of veterinary antibiotics. Insufficient recognition of emissions and environmental contamination hamper global efforts to prevent antibiotic resistance development. This pioneering study combined empirical data and modeling approaches to predict total 2010-2020 emissions of 80 veterinary antibiotics ranging from 23,110 to 40,850 tonnes/year, after 36-50% antibiotic removal by manure treatment. Following an initial increase of 10% from 2010 to 2015, emissions declined thereafter by 43%. While 85% of emissions discharged into soils, approximately 56%, 23%, and 18% of environmental residue were ultimately distributed in soils, freshwaters, and seawaters under steady-state conditions. In 2020, 657 (319-1470) tonnes entered the ocean from inland freshwaters. Median ∑antibiotics concentrations were estimated at 4.7 × 103 ng/L in freshwaters and 2.9 ng/g in soils, with tetracyclines and sulfonamides as the predominant components. We identified 44 veterinary antibiotics potentially posing high risks of resistance development in freshwaters, with seven exhibiting high risks in >10% of Chinese freshwater areas. Tetracyclines were the category with the most antibiotics exhibiting elevated risks; however, sulfamethylthiazole demonstrated the highest individual compound risk. The Haihe River Basin displayed the highest susceptibility overall. The findings offer valuable support for control of veterinary antibiotic contamination in China.

Dryland rock detention structures increase herbaceous vegetation cover and stabilize shrub cover over 10 years but do not directly affect soil fertility

Rock detention structures (RDS) such as check dams, gabions, and one rock dams are commonly used to mitigate erosion impacts in dryland ephemeral stream channels. RDS increase local water infiltration and floodplain connectivity, reduce sediment transport, and enhance vegetation growth and establishment. In addition to increasing overall vegetation cover, RDS may also buffer against a cycle of vegetation growth and collapse during years of extremely variable precipitation, helping to maintain stable cover. Although widely employed by land managers, success as reported in scientific literature varies, especially with regard to RDS effects on vegetation and soil fertility. We present the results of a 10-year field experiment in southeastern Arizona, USA, designed in collaboration with local land practitioners to measure local in-channel effects of RDS. Over 10 years, cover of herbaceous vegetation (forbs and grasses) doubled from 11 % to 22 % in channels treated with RDS, but did not significantly increase in untreated control channels. Shrub cover in treated channels was significantly less variable than in control channels over time. We analyzed the complex relationships between RDS, vegetation cover, and soil fertility using structural equation modeling (SEM), which represented conditions of the tenth year alone. SEM revealed that RDS did not directly affect soil fertility, as measured by total soil nitrogen, total soil carbon, soil organic matter, microbial richness, and potential nutrient cycling capacity. Notably, SEM did not yield the same trends as temporal monitoring, possibly because our structural equation models could not capture change over time. This discrepancy highlights the need for long-term, frequent monitoring of aboveground and belowground conditions to evaluate treatment success on a management scale. Overall, installing rock detention structures in ephemeral channels in arid and semiarid regions is a low-cost, feasible way to increase channel sediment aggradation, forb, and grass cover; stabilize shrub cover; and combat dryland degradation.

Design and implementation of a Li River water quality monitoring and analysis system based on outlier data analysis

The detection of water quality indicators such as Temperature, pH, Turbidity, Conductivity, and TDS involves five national standard methods. Chemically based measurement techniques may generate liquid residue, causing secondary pollution. The water quality monitoring and data analysis system can effectively address the issues that conventional methods require multiple pieces of equipment and repeated measurements. This paper analyzes the distribution characteristics of the historical data from five sensors at a specific time, displays them graphically in real time, and provides an early warning of exceeding the standard; It selects four water samples from different sections of the Li River, based on the national standard method, the average measurement errors of Temperature, PH, TDS, Conductivity and Turbidity are 0.98%, 2.23%, 2.92%, 3.05% and 3.98%.;It further uses the quartile method to analyze the outlier data over 100,000 records and five historical periods are selected. Experiment results show the system is relatively stable in measuring Temperature, PH and TDS, and the proportion of outlier is 0.42%, 0.84% and 1.24%. When Turbidity and Conductivity are measured, the proportion is 3.11% and 2.92%. In the experiment of using 7 methods to fill outlier, K nearest neighbor algorithm is better than others. The analysis of data trends, outliers, means, and extreme values assists in making decisions, such as updating and maintaining equipment, addressing extreme water quality situations, and enhancing regional water quality oversight.

Plastic does not simply flow into the sea: River transport dynamics affected by tides and floating plants

Plastic pollution is ubiquitous in aquatic environments worldwide. Rivers connect terrestrial and marine ecosystems, playing a key role in the transport of land-based plastic waste towards the sea. Emerging research suggests that in estuaries and tidal rivers, tidal dynamics play a significant role in plastic transport and retention dynamics. To date, observations in these systems have been limited, and plastic transport dynamics during single tidal cycles remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated plastic transport, trapping, and re-mobilization of macroplastics (> 0.5 cm) in the Saigon River, focusing on short-term dynamics of individual tidal cycles. We used GPS trackers, released at different stages of the tidal cycle (ebb, flood, neap, spring). Plastic items demonstrated dynamic and intermittent transport behavior. Items spent almost half of the time (49%) temporarily stopped, mainly due to their entrapment in vegetation, infrastructure, or deposition on riverbanks. Items were almost always re-mobilized within 10 h (85%), leading to successive phases of stopping and transport. Tidal dynamics also resulted in bidirectional transport of plastic items, with median daily total transport distance within the 40 km study reach (8.9 km day-1) over four times larger than the median daily net distance (2.0 km day-1). The median retention time of plastic items within the reach was 21 days (mean = 202 days). In total, 81% of the retrieved items were trapped within water hyacinths, emphasizing the important role of floating vegetation on river plastic transport dynamics. With this paper, we aim to provide data-driven insights into macroplastic transport and retention dynamics in a tropical tidal river. These are crucial in the design of effective intervention and monitoring strategies, and estimating net plastic emission from rivers into the sea.

Transition of organic matter from allochthonous to autochthonous alters benthic nutrient dynamics via microbial food webs

The impoundment of rivers by dams has significantly modified sedimentation patterns and trophic structures. As a result, the algal-derived organic matter (OM), as opposed to terrestrial-derived OM, plays an increasingly important role along the river-reservoir gradient. This study utilized water-sediment microcosms to explore the impacts of allochthonous and autochthonous OM deposition on benthic nutrient dynamics mediated by microbial food webs. Our results revealed that OM addition led to increased fluxes of NH4+ and CO2, with the highest flux induced by cyanobacteria OM, followed by diatom and allochthonous OM. N2 release flux was promoted by allochthonous and diatom OM deposition but inhibited by cyanobacteria OM deposition. The amendment of autochthonous OM increased the activity of dehydrogenase and urease, while allochthonous OM with a higher C/N ratio enhanced the catalytic abilities of polyphenol oxidase and β-glucosidase. Furthermore, OM deposition significantly reduced microbial community richness and diversity, except for eukaryotic richness, and induced pronounced changes in bacterial and eukaryotic community structures. Allochthonous OM deposition stimulated the utilization of bacteria and protozoan on native OM, resulting in a positive priming effect of 26.78 %. In contrast, diatom and cyanobacteria OM additions exerted negative priming effects of -44.53 % and -29.76 %, respectively. Bayesian stable isotope mixing models showed that diatom OM was primarily absorbed by protozoan and metazoan, while cyanobacteria OM was more easily decomposed by bacteria and transferred to higher trophic levels through microbial food webs. In addition, bacterial ammonification accounted for 74.5 % of NH4+ release in the allochthonous OM deposition treatment, whereas eukaryotic excretion contributed separately 83.3 % and 83.1 % to NH4+ release in the diatom and cyanobacteria OM addition treatments. These findings highlight the significance of accounting for the regulatory capacity of OM deposition when studying benthic metabolism within river-reservoir systems.

Seasonal variation in structural and functional distribution of periphyton in a macrolide antibiotics-contaminated river

Periphyton, a microbial assemblage of autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms, is vital to aquatic ecosystems. While exposure to macrolide antibiotics has been confirmed to reduce the biodiversity and damage the critical ecological functions in indoor microcosm bioassays, the distribution of periphyton along a macrolide antibiotic pollution gradient in a river has yet to be determined. Herein, we established the spatiotemporal distribution of five major macrolides, i.e., azithromycin (AZI), roxithromycin (ROX), erythromycin (ERY), clarithromycin (CLA), and anhydro erythromycin (ERY-H2O) in water and periphyton of Zao River (Xi'an, China), after which we evaluated the effects on the structures, photosynthetic activity, and carbon utilization capacity of periphyton in March, June, and September 2023. In contrast with the reference sites, the macrolides were identified in all sewage treatment plants (STPs) impacted sites with concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 2.18 μg/L in water and from not detected - 9.67 μg/g in periphyton. Regarding community structure, the occurrence of macrolides was negatively linked to FirmicutesExiguobacterium undae and Exiguobacterium sibiricum, CyanobacteriaOscillatoriales and Vischeria sp., and ChlorophytaMonostroma grevillei, Selenastrum sp. LU21 and Desmodesmus subspicatus. At the functional level, only the metabolism of phenolic acids was significantly decreased in river reach with high antibiotic levels in June, compared to the other five carbon sources that were not altered. The overall photosynthetic activity of periphytic photosystem II remained unchanged in both reference and STPs impacted groups throughout three seasons. Overall, the macrolides released from STPs were correlated with the altered periphytic structures in the river, whereas a similar trend was not detected for the community functions owing to the functional redundancy. A mesocosm experiments warrants further consideration to validate the field results.

Occurrence characteristics, environmental trend, and source analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the water environment of industrial zones

The middle reaches of the Yellow River are rich in energy resources, with the Kuye River, a first-class river in this region, serving as a vital hub for the coal chemical industry within China. This study investigated the occurrence patterns, environmental trends, and ecological risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Kuye River Basin, offering insights into the environmental dynamics of regions. The findings indicated that the river sediments primarily contained PAHs with medium to high-molecular weights, exhibiting levels ranging from 402.92 ng/g dw to 16,783.72 ng/g dw, while water bodies predominantly featured PAHs with low to medium molecular weights, ranging from 299.34 ng/L to 10,930.9 ng/L. The source analysis of PAHs indicated that industrial and traffic exhaust emissions were the primary contributors to PAHs in the Kuye basin, with sediments serving as a secondary release source based on fugacity fraction. The content of PAHs in sediment correlated closely with the environmental factors, and the PAHs inventory of the basin was 19.97 tons. The increased overall PAH concentration in the basin posed significant ecological and public health concerns, necessitating urgent attention.

Trace metal partitioning in the parnaíba delta in dry season, equatorial coast of Brazil

Trace metal concentrations in the particulate fractions (MP), dissolved fractions (MD) and sediments (MS), such as Ba, Cu, Co, Cr, Pb, Ni and Zn, were determined during the dry season of the largest open sea delta of Americas, the Parnaíba River Delta (Brazil). This study aimed to comprehend the distribution, dynamic changes of metal speciation and environmental quality index of trace metals in the particulate fractions and subsurface sediments in scenario of major marine influence over the delta. The trace metals bound to suspended particulate material (SPM) from weathering the drainage basin exhibited a removal trend under increases in salinity and pH. Desorption influenced the partitioning of BaMP, ZnMP, NiMP, CoMP, CuMP, and the adsorption and precipitation of PbMP and CrMP to the surface sediments. The organic matter contents in the sediments acts as an important geochemical carrier of these contaminants, and the dissolved organic carbon influences the binding of PbMD in the subsurface waters. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) plays a crucial role in revealing potential contamination with ZnMP contents and weak association to this fraction. These results make possible the assessment of ecological risk by metal contamination and global pollution mitigation in coastal tidal estuaries under intensive physical mixing along the equatorial coast.

Spatial accumulation of flood-driven riverside litter in two Northern Atlantic Rivers

The escalation of litter accumulation in aquatic environments is recognized as an emerging global concern. Although rivers represent the main conduits for land-based waste into the oceans, the spatial dynamics of litter accumulation in these systems remain poorly investigated, especially after hydro-climatic extreme events. Floods have been identified as major drivers of litter mobilization, including macroplastics, within rivers. However, predicting flood-induced litter accumulation along riverbanks is complex due to the cumulative interplay of multiple environmental (geomorphological and riparian) and anthropogenic factors. Using empirical data collected from 14 stream reaches in two Northern Atlantic rivers in Portugal, our study evaluates which factors, among geomorphological, riparian, and anthropogenic descriptors, best drive riverside litter accumulation after floods. Taking into account the longitudinal gradient and the spatial heterogeneity of the studied reaches, our study enhances how the accumulation and characteristics (type, size) of riverside litter vary across a rural-urban continuum. Our model reveals that the combination of the human population density and the stream slope at river reach showed the highest explanatory power for the accumulation of riverside litter. Our findings indicate that litter tends to be retained close to the source, even under flood conditions. We also found that the structure of riparian vegetation showed low explanatory power for litter accumulation. However, riparian trapping could be influenced by litter input (density and type) which varies with anthropogenic activities. This work highlights the importance of gathering field data to identify critical areas of riverside litter accumulation within river basins. Our findings can further support environmental managers in designing and implementing effective cleanup campaigns and implementing plastic recovery strategies at specific areas. Nevertheless, it is crucial to enhance coordinated efforts across the entire value chain to reduce plastic pollution, promote innovative approaches for plastic litter valorization, and establish effective prevention pathways.

Distribution characteristics of microorganisms in sediments of Dagu River and their biological indicator function for evaluating eco-environmental quality of rural river

The microorganisms in sediments play a crucial role in biogeochemical cycle processes, and numerous studies have shown that microbial community is closely related to environmental factors. However, the usability of sediment microorganisms to evaluate the eco-environment quality of rural rivers has not been adequately explored. This study investigated the distribution characteristics and response of sediment microorganisms to environmental parameters and benthic organisms. Based on the environmental parameters and benthic community indices, the 12 stations were divided into high-polluted group A, moderate-polluted group B and low-polluted group C. Station DG01 and DG02 in group A had the highest level of As and Ni pollution and nutrient concentration, and DG09 in group A had the lowest benthic diversity. Correspondingly, group A had the lowest abundance of Proteobacteria, which has a higher requirement for the environment than Planctomycetes. Group B had the highest sulfide level (97.45 mg/kg), and bacteria (Thiobacillus, Sulfurisoma and Sulfuritalea) with genes involved in sulfur cycling were more enriched in this group. Group C had the lowest level of total nitrogen (243.36 mg/kg), and Rhodanobacteraceae in Xanthomonadales might be a key bioindicator for low nitrogen. In addition, Chlorophyta was found to be more susceptible to heavy metals, and moreover co-occurrence networks showed that microeukaryotes were more sensitive to heavy metal pollution compared to benthic animals and prokaryotes. Therefore, this study suggested that benthic microorganisms especially microeukaryotes could be used as good indicators for evaluating the eco-environmental quality of rural rivers.

Fuzzy logic as a novel approach to predict biological condition gradient of various streams in Ceyhan River Basin (Turkey)

Creating a method to categorize the ecological status of streams according to their biological conditions and establishing scientifically defensible nutrient criteria to protect their biotic integrity poses significant challenges. Biomonitoring of least disturbed areas is an important issue to accurately assess the ecological status of surface waters and ensure their sustainability. The fuzzy logic as a novel approach was firstly applied to evaluate the biological condition gradient of 44 sampled streams in the Ceyhan River Basin, utilizing two diatom indices, total phosphorus (TP), electrical conductivity (EC), and CORINE data. The fuzzy logic was employed to examine variations in the diatom compositions and land cover based on biological condition gradients (BCGs) of various streams and to assess the suitability of BCG in evaluating the health of studied stream systems. A three-layer fuzzy logic was constructed to predict BCGs of steams based on input data, with diatom metrics, TP, and EC representing BCGdia and land cover variables contributing to BCGland. The effects of operating variables were studied to optimize BCG results. The highest BCG score (0.85) was determined in Aksu Spring Brook in the spring, whereas the lowest value (0.05) was calculated in Erkenez Stream3 in the summer. BCGs showed strong relationships with nutrients, altitude, and EC. Results of BCGs indicated that sampling stations have various ecological statuses ranging from bad to high in the Ceyhan River Basin. The BCGdia and BCGland made important contributions to determine the ecological status of streams in the Ceyhan River Basin. Results showed that the BCG approach allows a more reliable way to determine the ecological status of streams in the Ceyhan River Basin by combining biological and chemical assessments for the sustainability of the environment. It is recommended that the BCG will be applied and evaluated in future research studies across various river basins, both within and outside of Turkey.

Geochemical baseline establishment, pollution level and health risk assessment of soil heavy metals in the upper Xiaowen River Basin, Shandong Province, China

This study analyzed the distribution and content of eight heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, As, Cd, and Hg) in 221 surface soil samples from the upper reaches of the Xiaowen River. Environmental geochemical baselines were established for the eight heavy metals, and the pollution status was assessed on the basis of these baselines and the soil background value of Weifang City. The calculation results of Nemerow pollution index and the potential ecological hazard index (PEHI)-Ri showed that the overall pollution degree and ecological hazard in the study area were at a slight level. 49% (calculated by baseline value) and 24% (calculated by background value of Weifang City) samples were at moderate or above pollution level. 9% (calculated by baseline value) and 42% (calculated by background value) samples were at the level of moderate potential ecological hazards or above. According to the calculation results of Igeo and PEHI-Ei, the main pollutant in the study area was Hg, followed by Cd. 3% (calculated by baseline value) and 12% (calculated by background value) of Hg samples were at moderate or above contamination levels. 5% (calculated by baseline value) and 38% (calculated by background value) of Hg samples were at the level of strong potential ecological hazard or above. The western, central, and eastern parts of the study area were mainly the primary areas of pollution and ecological hazards. The non-carcinogenic risk was at an acceptable level, the carcinogenic risk was at a tolerable level, and the main risk pathway was oral intake, with Cr being the main contributor. Source apportionment indicated that soil heavy metals primarily originate from soil parent material, transportation, agricultural fertilization, and industrial emissions (waste gas, waste water and solid waste).

Multiple lines of evidence point to pesticides as stressors affecting invertebrate communities in small streams in five United States regions

Multistressor studies were performed in five regions of the United States to assess the role of pesticides as stressors affecting invertebrate communities in wadable streams. Pesticides and other chemical and physical stressors were measured in 75 to 99 streams per region for 4 weeks, after which invertebrate communities were surveyed (435 total sites). Pesticides were sampled weekly in filtered water, and once in bed sediment. The role of pesticides as a stressor to invertebrate communities was assessed by evaluating multiple lines of evidence: toxicity predictions based on measured pesticide concentrations, multivariate models and other statistical analyses, and previously published mesocosm experiments. Toxicity predictions using benchmarks and species sensitivity distributions and statistical correlations suggested that pesticides were present at high enough concentrations to adversely affect invertebrate communities at the regional scale. Two undirected techniques-boosted regression tree models and distance-based linear models-identified which pesticides were predictors of (respectively) invertebrate metrics and community composition. To put insecticides in context with known, influential covariates of invertebrate response, generalized additive models were used to identify which individual pesticide(s) were important predictors of invertebrate community condition in each region, after accounting for natural covariates. Four insecticides were identified as stressors to invertebrate communities at the regional scale: bifenthrin, chlordane, fipronil and its degradates, and imidacloprid. Fipronil was particularly important in the Southeast region, and imidacloprid, bifenthrin, and chlordane were important in multiple regions. For imidacloprid, bifenthrin, and fipronil, toxicity predictions were supported by mesocosm experiments that demonstrated adverse effects on naïve aquatic communities when dosed under controlled conditions. These multiple lines of evidence do not prove causality-which is challenging in the field under multistressor conditions-but they make a strong case for the role of insecticides as stressors adversely affecting invertebrate communities in streams within the five sampled regions.

New insights into pesticide occurrence and multicompartmental monitoring strategies in stream ecosystems using periphyton and suspended sediment

Streams are susceptible to pesticide pollutants which are transported outside of the intended area of application from surrounding agricultural fields. It is essential to monitor the occurrence and levels of pesticides in aquatic ecosystems to comprehend their effects on the aquatic environment. The common sampling strategy used for monitoring pesticides in stream ecosystems is through the collection and analysis of grab water samples. However, grab water sampling may not effectively monitor pesticides due to its limited ability to capture temporal and spatial variability, potentially missing fluctuations and uneven distribution of pesticides in aquatic environments. Monitoring using periphyton and sediment sampling may offer a more comprehensive approach by accounting for accumulative processes and temporal variations. Periphyton are a collective of microorganisms that grow on hard surfaces in aquatic ecosystems. They are responsive to chemical and biological changes in the environment, and therefore have the potential to act as a cost-effective, integrated sampling tool to monitor pesticide exposures in aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to assess pesticides detected through periphyton, suspended sediment, and conventional grab water sampling methods and identify the matrix that offers a more comprehensive characterization of a stream's pesticide exposure profile. Ten streams across Southern Ontario were sampled in 2021 and 2022. At each stream site, water, sediment and periphyton, colonizing both artificial and natural substrates, were collected and analyzed for the presence of ~500 pesticides. Each of the three matrices detected distinctive pesticide exposure profiles. The frequency of detection in periphyton, sediment and water matrices were related to pesticides' log Kow and log Koc (P < 0.05). In addition, periphyton bioconcentrated 22 pesticides above levels observed in the ambient water. The bioconcentration factors of pesticides in periphyton can be predicted from their log Kow (simple linear regressions, P < 0.05). The results demonstrate that sediment and periphyton accumulate pesticides in stream environments. This highlights the importance of monitoring pesticide exposure using these matrices to ensure a complete and comprehensive characterization of exposure in stream ecosystems.

Urban agglomerations as an environmental dimension of antibiotics transmission through the "One Health" lens

The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in different media have been widely reported; however, their occurrence in the environmental dimension of the Chinese urban agglomerations has received less attention, especially in bioaccumulation and health risks of antibiotics through the "One Health" lens. The review presents the current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation, as well as health exposure risks in urban agglomerations through the "One Health" lens, and identifies current information gaps. The reviewed studies suggested antibiotic concentrations in water and soil were more sensitive to social indicators of urban agglomerations than those in sediment. The ecological risk and resistance risk of antibiotics in water were much higher than those of sediments, and the high-risk phenomenon occurred at a higher frequency in urban agglomerations. Erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O), amoxicillin (AMOX) and norfloxacin (NFC) were priority-controlled antibiotics in urban waters. Tetracyclines (TCs) posed medium to high risks to soil organisms in the soil of urban agglomerations. Health risk evaluation based on dietary intake showed that children had the highest dietary intake of antibiotics in urban agglomerations. The health risk of antibiotics was higher in children than in other age groups. Our results also demonstrated that dietary structure might impact health risks associated with target antibiotics in urban agglomerations to some extent.

Exploration of natural processes and anthropogenic inputs by Zn isotopes in suspended particulate matter: A case study from the Lancang River in Southwest China

River is an important pathway for the biogeochemical cycle of Zn. This study reports Zn concentration and δ66Zn composition for suspended particulate matter (SPM) from Lancang River basin in Southwest China, and explore the impact of natural processes and human activities on Zn cycle. The SPM samples have a much higher average Zn content (162 mg kg-1) than that of the upper crust (67.0 mg kg-1), but it is close to the value of the Pearl River (187 mg kg-1). The enrichment factor (EF) values of Zn in SPM range from 1.08 to 6.88, with an average of 2.15, which does not show significant pollution characteristics. The δ66Zn values in SPM range from -0.67‰ to +0.63‰, with an average of +0.13‰. The δ66Zn values showed positive correlation with Ca/Mg ratios while showed little correlation with Zn contents in SPM. It indicated that anthropogenic sources have limited influence on SPM, and the Zn isotope composition in SPM is more likely to be inherited from the weathered rocks materials and influenced by natural fractionation processes in river water. This result contributes to understanding of the geochemical cycling process of Zn and its environmental effects in water.

Characteristics and fractionations of sediment oxygen demand in a complex tidal river network area

Tidal river networks are affected by the tide and influenced by complex factors related to sediment oxygen demand (SOD). In this study, we used chemical inhibition to measure the oxygen consumption of different types of SOD to explore the specific oxygen consumption mechanism of sediments. Then, we evaluated the diffusion fluxes of the sediment-water interface and factors affecting SOD using diffusive gradients in thin films. Total SOD in the tidal river network area of the Pearl River basin was ∼0.5928 g/m2/day, which was 8.47% higher than that in the non-tidal river network area but lower than that in black and odorous water reported previously. In the tidal river network area, biological SOD was 15.6% higher in summer than in winter, and the difference in total SOD was greatly influenced by human activity. We observed a significant effect of sediment on SOD in winter, whereas there were no significant correlations between sediment and SOD in summer. Different particle-size distributions lead to different organic matter contents, resulting in different biological SOD ratios between seasons. Our study found that seasonal tidal changes can affect ion exchange at the sediment water interface, leading to changes in SOD.These findings will be of great significance for the study of phenomena associated with low dissolved oxygen in tidal river networks and provide directions for future sediment pollution control.

Prevention and control of algae residue deposition in long-distance water conveyance project

With the increase of operation cycle in long-distance water conveyance project, the problem of silt or algae residue deposition in river channels is becoming more and more prominent, especially in the vicinity of some uncommonly used bifurcation and outflow gates along the water conveyance project. When the deposition reaches certain thickness, it will not only affect the water quality of local water bodies, but also seriously affect the normal operation of these bifurcation and outflow gates. In order to alleviate this problem, the prevention and control of algae residue deposition in long-distance water conveyance project is mainly explored from two perspectives: (1) the scouring effect on the bottom of the side channel is compared by studying different diversion ratios of the side channel; (2) The arc guide wing wall is built near the junction of the main channel and side channel. The simulation is conducted at 6 different included angles including -10°, -5°, 0°, 5°, 10° and 15°, and for non-guide wing wall. The incoming flow is simulated at 280 m3/s of general flow and 320 m3/s of design flow. A total of 14 groups of experiments are carried out for numerical simulation. It can be concluded that, when the incoming flow is held constant, a higher diversion ratio results in a more effective scouring of the bottom sediment in the side channel; when the included angles of the guide wing wall are -10°, -5°, 0° and 5°, it has a significant effect on the prevention and control of algae deposition near the junction; when the included angles of the guide wing wall are 10° and 15°, it cannot play a role in prevention and control and also hinders the normal operation of the river channel.

Effects of landscape pattern on water quality at multi-spatial scales in Wuding River Basin, China

Urbanization and agricultural land use have led to water quality deterioration. Studies have been conducted on the relationship between landscape patterns and river water quality; however, the Wuding River Basin (WDRB), which is a complex ecosystem structure, is facing resource problems in river basins. Thus, the multi-scale effects of landscape patterns on river water quality in the WDRB must be quantified. This study explored the spatial and seasonal effects of land use distribution on river water quality. Using the data of 22 samples and land use images from the WDRB for 2022, we quantitatively described the correlation between river water quality and land use at spatial and seasonal scales. Stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and redundancy analyses (RDA) were used to quantitatively screen and compare the relationships between land use structure, landscape patterns, and water quality at different spatial scales. The results showed that the sub-watershed scale is the best spatial scale model that explains the relationship between land use and water quality. With the gradual narrowing of the spatial scale range, cultivated land, grassland, and construction land had strong water quality interpretation abilities. The influence of land use type on water quality parameter variables was more distinct in rainy season than in the dry season. Therefore, in the layout of watershed management, reasonably adjusting the proportion relationship of vegetation and artificial building land in the sub-basin scale and basin scope can realize the effective control of water quality optimization.

Non-negligible N2O emission hotspots: Rivers impacted by ion-adsorption rare earth mining

Rare earth mining causes severe riverine nitrogen pollution, but its effect on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and the associated nitrogen transformation processes remain unclear. Here, we characterized N2O fluxes from China's largest ion-adsorption rare earth mining watershed and elucidated the mechanisms that drove N2O production and consumption using advanced isotope mapping and molecular biology techniques. Compared to the undisturbed river, the mining-affected river exhibited higher N2O fluxes (7.96 ± 10.18 mmol m-2d-1 vs. 2.88 ± 8.27 mmol m-2d-1, P = 0.002), confirming that mining-affected rivers are N2O emission hotspots. Flux variations scaled with high nitrogen supply (resulting from mining activities), and were mainly attributed to changes in water chemistry (i.e., pH, and metal concentrations), sediment property (i.e., particle size), and hydrogeomorphic factors (e.g., river order and slope). Coupled nitrification-denitrification and N2O reduction were the dominant processes controlling the N2O dynamics. Of these, the contribution of incomplete denitrification to N2O production was greater than that of nitrification, especially in the heavily mining-affected reaches. Co-occurrence network analysis identified Thiomonas and Rhodanobacter as the key genus closely associated with N2O production, suggesting their potential roles for denitrification. This is the first study to elucidate N2O emission and influential mechanisms in mining-affected rivers using combined isotopic and molecular techniques. The discovery of this study enhances our understanding of the distinctive processes driving N2O production and consumption in highly anthropogenically disturbed aquatic systems, and also provides the foundation for accurate assessment of N2O emissions from mining-affected rivers on regional and global scales.

Deciphering solute transport, microbiota assembly patterns and metabolic functions in the hyporheic zone of an effluent-dominated river

We lack a clear understanding of how anthropogenic pressures, exemplified by effluent discharge from wastewater treatment plants, destabilize microbial communities in the hyporheic zone (HZ) of receiving rivers. In this study, the spatiotemporal characteristics of hydrological parameters, and the physicochemical properties of surface and subsurface water in a representative effluent-dominated river were monitored. Sequencing of 16S rRNA amplicons and metagenomes revealed the microbial community structure in the HZ of both effluent discharge area and downstream region. The keystone taxa (taxa vital in determining the composition of each microbial cluster) and the keystone functions they controlled were subsequently identified. Effluent discharge amplified the depth of the oxic/suboxic zone and the hyporheic exchange fluxes in the effluent discharge area, which was 50-120% and 40-300% higher than in the downstream region, respectively. Microbial community structure pattern analysis demonstrated an enhancement in the rate of dispersal, an increase in microbial diversity, and an improved community network complexity in the effluent discharge area. By contrast, the number of keystone taxa in the effluent discharge area was 50-70% lower than that of the downstream region, resulting in reduced community network stability and functionality. The keystone taxa controlling metabolic functions in the networks categorized to effluent discharge area were comprised of more genera related to nitrogen and sulfur cycling, e.g., Dechloromonas, Desulfobacter, Flavobacterium, Nitrosomonas, etc., highlighting a research need in monitoring species associated with nutrient element cycling in the HZ of receiving waterbodies. The results showed that the keystone taxa could contribute positively to network stability, which was negatively correlated to hyporheic exchange fluxes and redox gradients. This study provides valuable insights that will improve our understanding of how river ecosystems respond to changes in anthropogenic pressures.

Seasonal Variation and Association of Heavy Metals in the Vital Organs of Edible Fishes from the River Jhelum in Punjab, Pakistan

The toxic effects of heavy metals are drastic, including accumulation. Fish species are important bio-indicators of heavy metal pollution in aquatic bodies. The current study aimed to assess the seasonal variation of heavy metals in the vital organs of mostly consumed fishes in River Jhelum, Pakistan. Samples of fish, including Wallago attu (Malhi), Rita rita (Khagga), and Mystus seenghala (Singhari), were collected from four different sites, i.e., Khushab, Muhammad Wala (M. Wala), 8.R.D and Rasool barrage during summer and winter seasons. Heavy metals such as iron (Fe), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co) and Cadmium (Cd) were estimated through acid digestion and spectrometric analysis. Results showed a significantly higher (P < 0.05) amount of these metals in the liver, followed by the kidneys of fish species. There were seasonal variations in the absorption of these metals as well. Cr (11.71) and Fe (58.66) were detected in higher amounts in Khagga which showed the greatest affinity for certain metals in some cases. In contrast, Singhari showed the greatest affinity to other metals in other cases. Comparative analysis revealed that there was a highly significant (P < 0.05) difference for the accumulation of almost all metals in both seasons and summer had the highest concentration of Cd, Pb, Co, Cr and Fe as compared to winter in all four sampling stations in the case of kidney and liver of all the three fishes. Elevated levels of heavy metals were detected in the summer due to increased temperature. Heavy metals found in the River Jhelum may demonstrate that metals can significantly affect the fish species.

Spatial gradients and molecular transformations of DOM, DON and DOS in human-impacted estuarine sediments

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) constitutes the most active fraction in global carbon pools, with estuarine sediments serving as significant repositories, where DOM is susceptible to dynamic transformations. Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) inputs further complicate DOM by creating N-bearing DOM (DON) and S-bearing DOM (DOS). This study delves into the spatial gradients and transformation mechanisms of DOM, DON, and DOS in Pearl River Estuary (PRE) sediments, China, using combined techniques of UV-visible spectroscopy, Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), and microbial high-throughput sequencing. Results uncovered a distinct spatial gradient in DOM concentration, aromaticity (SUVA254), hydrophobicity (SUVA260), the content of substituent groups including carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl and ester groups (A253/A203) of chromophoric DOM (CDOM), and the abundances of tyrosine/tryptophan-like protein and humic-like substances in fluorophoric DOM (FDOM). These all decreased from upper to lower PRE, accompanied by a decrease in O3S and O5S components, indicating seaward reduction in the contribution of terrestrial OM, especially anthropogenic inputs. Additionally, sediments exhibited a reduction in molecular diversity (number of formulas) of DOM, DON, and DOS from upper to lower PRE, with molecules tending towards a lower nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC) and higher bio-reactivity (MLBL), molecular weight (m/z) and saturation (H/C). While molecular composition of DOM remained similar in PRE sediments, the relative abundance of lignin-like substances decreased, with a concurrent increase in protein-like and lipid-like substances in DON and DOS from upper to lower PRE. Mechanistic analysis identified the joint influence of terrestrial OM, anthropogenic N/S inputs, and microbial processes in shaping the spatial gradients of DOM, DON, and DOS in PRE estuarine sediments. This study contributes valuable insights into the intricate spatial gradients and transformations of DOM, DON, and DOS within human-impacted estuarine sediments.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of priority water pollutants in surface river sediments with emphasis on industrially affected areas

Priority water pollutants comprising six plasticizers, 18 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), 1,4-dioxane, epichlorohydrin, formaldehyde, acrylamide, and cyanides were determined in surface river sediments to assess their distribution patterns and ecological risks. Among these, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), toluene, TPH, and acrylamide were frequently found in sediments. The industrial sites had higher concentrations of ∑plasticizers (median 628 ng/g dry weight (dw)), ∑VOCs (median 3.35 ng/g dw), acrylamide (median 0.966 ng/g dw), and TPH (median 152 μg/g dw) in sediments than the mixed and non-industrial areas. The other pollutants did not show the significant differences in levels according to site types because of their relatively low detection frequencies. Volatile and soluble substances as well as hydrophobic pollutants were predominantly detected in surface sediments from industrial areas. Sediment contamination patterns were affected by the size and composition of the industrial zones around the sampling sites. The ecological risks determined using the sediment quality guidelines (DEHP, VOCs, and TPH) and the mean probable effect level quotients (DEHP) were mostly acceptable. However, the two most representative industrial regions (the largest industrial area and the first industrial city) showed risks of concern for DEHP and TPH.

Digitalizing river aquatic ecosystems

Traditional river health assessment relies on limited water quality indices and representative organism activity, but does not comprehensively obtain biotic and abiotic information of the ecosystem. Here, we propose a new approach to evaluate the ecological and health risks of river aquatic ecosystems. First, detailed physicochemical and biological characterization of a river ecosystem can be obtained through pollutant determination (especially emerging pollutants) and DNA/RNA sequencing. Second, supervised machine learning can be applied to perform classification analysis of characterization data and ascertain river ecosystem ecology and health. Our proposed methodology transforms river ecosystem health assessment and can be applied in river management.

Advanced nanofibrous sorbents for the extraction of pollutants from river water and protein-containing matrices

The extraction efficiencies of thirty types of fibers produced by meltblown, alternating current electrospinning, and meltblown-co-electrospinning technologies were tested as advanced sorbents for on-line solid-phase extraction in a high-performance liquid chromatography system have been tested and compared with a commercial C18 sorbent. The properties of each fiber, which were often depended on the production process, and their applicability were demonstrated with the extraction of the model analytes nitrophenols and chlorophenols from various matrices including river water and to purify complex matrix human serum and bovine serum albumin from macromolecular ballast. Polycaprolactone fibers outperformed other polymers and were selected for subsequent modifications including (i) incorporation of hybrid carbon nanoparticles, i.e., graphene, activated carbon, and carbon black into the polymer prior to fiber fabrication, and (ii) surface modification by dip coating with polyhydroxy modifiers including graphene oxide, tannin, dopamine, hesperidin, and heparin. These novel fibrous sorbents were comparable to commercial C18 sorbent and provided excellent analyte recoveries of 70-112% even from the protein-containing matrices.

Evolution of a tidal channel network in the Yellow River Delta, China, and simulation of optimization scenarios

Tidal channel networks, which characterize all river deltas, control the exchange of water and nutrients (hydrological connectivity) between the ocean and the delta area. Therefore, a tidal channel network in optimal conditions ensures the maintenance of the diversity and stability of the deltaic ecosystem. However, the developmental status of channel networks in the Yellow River Delta, China, has not been clearly determined. Here, we selected a typical tidal channel network in this delta that showed different spatial patterns (e.g., connectivity attributes) in the past three decades and explored its evolution using entropy as an index of connectivity. Seven scenarios were set up to determine the optimal status of the tidal channel network by optimizing its structure. The optimization effect was evaluated by comparing the connectivity attributes of the channel network before and after optimization. The results showed that the network experienced two obviously different developmental phases: an evolution before 2005 and a regression after 2005. Mann-Kendall analysis indicated that the channel network achieved dynamic stability before 2014 and became unstable thereafter. The simulations conducted to optimize the system showed that adding outlets changed the current patterns of the network' structural and functional connectivity. As the optimization proceeded, structural connectivity increased while functional connectivity decreased, and the tidal channel network tended to be dynamically stable. Our study elucidated the quantitative relationship between outlet number and stability within tidal channel networks, providing reference information that could be incorporated into future projects for the restoration and management of river deltas.

Demographic structure across all known populations of the rheophyte Dyckia brevifolia Baker (Bromeliaceae) in the Itajaí-Açu River, Southern Brazil

Understanding the distribution and demographic structure of populations is essential for species conservation. In Brazil, the rheophyte group has been greatly affected by the construction of hydroelectric dams. All know populations of Dyckia brevifolia Baker along Itajaí-Açu River were studied. The plants were classified as seedlings, immature or reproductive rosettes. In addition, the number of dead rosettes, except for seedlings, was determined in five populations of D. brevifolia. The total number of rosettes per population ranged from 273 to 7,185, totaling 30,443 rosettes, and 1,789 seedlings (5.9%). Only 2.4% of rosettes occurred isolated and 97.6% occurred clumped into 2,254 clumps. The number of rosettes per clump ranged from two to 339 rosettes. The percentage of reproductive rosettes per population ranged from 7.8 to 26.7%. The correlation between the number of clumps or between the total number of rosettes and the area of occupation was significant and positive (r = 0.82; P < 0.05). The production of offshoots (1-4) occurred on immature and reproductive rosettes. Dyckia brevifolia has herbivory by Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris (capybara). These rosettes die or often resprout, emitting from 1 to 20 shoots. The populations did not present a pattern of distribution of rosettes in the diametric classes, but in all populations a decrease in the number of rosettes can be observed in the classes with the largest diameter. The small area of occupation (9,185 m2) showed high environmental specificity and vulnerable to habitat loss and environmental changes. Therefore, the maintenance these sites is essential for the long-term conservation of D. brevifolia.

Using structural equation modeling to assess the genotoxic and mutagenic effects of heavy metal contamination in the freshwater ecosystems: A study involving Oreochromis niloticus in an urban river

Chemical pollutants represent a leading problem for aquatic ecosystems, as they can induce genetic, biochemical, and physiological changes in the species of these ecosystems, thus compromising their adaptability and survival. The Capibaribe River runs through the state of Pernambuco, located in Northeastern Brazil, and passes through areas of agricultural cultivation, densely populated cities, and industrial centers, primarily textiles. Despite its importance, few ecotoxicological studies have been conducted on its environment, and knowledge about pollution patterns and their effects on its biota is still being determined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality and the damage supposed to be caused by pollutants on the DNA specimens of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) obtained from seven strategic points of Capibaribe. Tilapia specimens and water were collected during the rainy and dry seasons from 2015 to 2017. The following characteristics were analyzed: physicochemical (six), metal concentration (seven), local pluviosity, micronuclei, and comet assay. The physicochemical and heavy metal analyses were exploratory, whereas the ecotoxicological analyses were hypothetical. To verify this hypothesis, we compared the groups of fish collected to the results of the micronuclei test and comet assay. We created a Structural Equation Model (SEM) to determine how each metal's micronuclei variables, damage index, pluviosity, and concentration were related. Our results demonstrated that the highest values for markers of genetic damage were detected at points with the highest heavy metal concentrations, especially iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, and cadmium. The SEM demonstrated that metals could explain the findings of the genotoxicity markers. Moreover, other pollutants, such as pesticides, should be considered, mainly where the river passes through rural areas. The results presented here demonstrate that the Capibaribe River has different degrees of contamination and confirm our hypothesis.
