Phonon-mediated mid-infrared photoresponse of graphene

The photoresponse of graphene at mid-infrared frequencies is of high technological interest and is governed by fundamentally different underlying physics than the photoresponse at visible frequencies, as the energy of the photons and substrate phonons involved have comparable energies. Here, we perform a spectrally resolved study of the graphene photoresponse for mid-infrared light by measuring spatially resolved photocurrent over a broad frequency range (1000-1600 cm(-1)). We unveil the different mechanisms that give rise to photocurrent generation in graphene on a polar substrate. In particular, we find an enhancement of the photoresponse when the light excites bulk or surface phonons of the SiO2 substrate. This work paves the way for the development of graphene-based mid-infrared thermal sensing technology.

Gigahertz Optomechanical Photon-Phonon Transduction between Nanostructure Lines

High-frequency surface phonons have a myriad of applications in telecommunications and sensing, but their generation and detection have often been limited to transducers occupying micron-scale regions because of the use of two-dimensional transducer arrays. Here, by means of transient reflection spectroscopy we experimentally demonstrate optically coupled nanolocalized gigahertz surface phonon transduction based on a gold nanowire emitter arranged parallel to linear gold nanorod receiver arrays, that is, quasi-one-dimensional emitter-receivers. We investigate the response up to 10 GHz of these individual optoacoustic and acousto-optic transducers, respectively, by exploiting plasmon-polariton longitudinal resonances of the nanorods. We also demonstrate how the surface phonon detection efficiency is highly dependent on the nanorod orientation with respect to the phonon wave vector, which constrains the symmetry of the detectable modes, and on the nanorod acoustic resonance spectrum. Applications include nanosensing.

Anomalous Stability of Two-Dimensional Ice Confined in Hydrophobic Nanopores

The freezing of water mostly proceeds via heterogeneous ice nucleation, a process in which an effective nucleation medium not only expedites ice crystallization but also may effectively direct the polymorph selection of ice. Here, we show that water confined within a hydrophobic slit nanopore exhibits a freezing behavior strongly distinguished from its bulk counterpart. Such a difference is reflected by a strong, non-monotonic pore-size dependence of freezing temperature but, more surprisingly, by an unexpected stacking ordering of crystallized two-dimensional ice containing just a few ice layers. In particular, confined trilayer ice is found to exclusively crystallize into a well-ordered, hexagonal stacking sequence despite the fact that nanopore exerts no explicit constraint on stacking order. The absence of cubic stacking sequence is found to be originated from the intrinsically lower thermodynamic stability of cubic ice over hexagonal ice at the interface, which contrasts sharply the nearly degenerated stability of bulk hexagonal and cubic ices. Detailed examination clearly reveals that the divergence is attributed to the inherent difference between the two ice polymorphs in their surface phonon modes, which is further found to generically occur at both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces.

Size Dependent Specific Heat Capacity of PbSe Nanocrystals

Specific heat capacity is one of the most fundamental thermodynamic properties of materials. In this work, we measured the specific heat capacity of PbSe nanocrystals with diameters ranging from 5 to 23 nm, and its value increases significantly from 0.2 to 0.6 J g-1 °C-1. We propose a mass assignment model to describe the specific heat capacity of nanocrystals, which divides it into four parts: electron, inner, surface, and ligand. By eliminating the contribution of ligand and electron specific heat capacity, the specific heat capacity of the inorganic core is linearly proportional to its surface-to-volume ratio, showing the size dependence. Based on this linear relationship, surface specific heat capacity accounts for 40-60% of the specific heat capacity of nanocrystals with size decreasing. It can be attributed to the uncoordinated surface atoms, which is evidenced by the appearance of extra surface phonons in Raman spectra and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations.
