Abstract
Pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR is successfully applied to trace the diffusion of methyl oleate (MO) inside the mesopores of hierarchically structured titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1)-based catalysts. Introduction of mesoporosity by post-synthetic treatment of initially microporous TS-1 provides additional active surface to improve catalytic activity in the epoxidation of MO. The present study provides experimental evidence of the accessibility of mesopores for MO resulting from alkaline treatment of TS-1. The self-diffusion coefficients of MO inside the pores of hierarchically structured TS-1 catalysts are up to two orders of magnitude lower compared to the values in the bulk liquid phase. Additionally, the methodological capability of PFG NMR for measuring self-diffusion coefficients of long-chain hydrocarbons (up to C19) confined to narrow mesopores of catalytically active is demonstrated for the first time. Direct assessment of methyl oleate diffusion confined to nanopores of TS-1-based catalysts by means of pulsed field gradient NMR.![]()

Abstract
Introducing mesoporosity to conventional microporous sorbents or catalysts is often proposed as a solution to enhance their mass transport rates. Here, we show that diffusion in these hierarchical materials is more complex and exhibits non-monotonic dependence on sorbate loading. Our atomistic simulations of n-hexane in a model system containing microporous nanosheets and mesopore channels indicate that diffusivity can be smaller than in a conventional zeolite with the same micropore structure, and this observation holds true even if we confine the analysis to molecules completely inside the microporous nanosheets. Only at high sorbate loadings or elevated temperatures, when the mesopores begin to be sufficiently populated, does the overall diffusion in the hierarchical material exceed that in conventional microporous zeolites. Our model system is free of structural defects, such as pore blocking or surface disorder, that are typically invoked to explain slower-than-expected diffusion phenomena in experimental measurements. Examination of free energy profiles and visualization of molecular diffusion pathways demonstrates that the large free energy cost (mostly enthalpic in origin) for escaping from the microporous region into the mesopores leads to more tortuous diffusion paths and causes this unusual transport behavior in hierarchical nanoporous materials. This knowledge allows us to re-examine zero-length-column chromatography data and show that these experimental measurements are consistent with the simulation data when the crystallite size instead of the nanosheet thickness is used for the nominal diffusional length.

Abstract
This review addresses the most relevant aspects of vibrational spectroscopies (IR, Raman and INS) applied to zeolites and zeotype materials. Surface Brønsted and Lewis acidity and surface basicity are treated in detail. The role of probe molecules and the relevance of tuning both the proton affinity and the steric hindrance of the probe to fully understand and map the complex site population present inside microporous materials are critically discussed. A detailed description of the methods needed to precisely determine the IR absorption coefficients is given, making IR a quantitative technique. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process that can be extracted from a variable-temperature IR study are described. Finally, cutting-edge space- and time-resolved experiments are reviewed. All aspects are discussed by reporting relevant examples. When available, the theoretical literature related to the reviewed experimental results is reported to support the interpretation of the vibrational spectra on an atomic level.

Abstract
The metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 is a hierarchical material that comprises both micropores and mesopores in its crystalline structure. Because the pore structure is perfectly defined, NU-1000 is an interesting material for improving our understanding of diffusion in hierarchically structured materials. Here, we present molecular dynamics simulations aimed at probing the transport properties of n-alkanes in NU-1000 and introduce methods from the microrheology literature for analyzing the mean-squared displacements and their spatial heterogeneity. Adsorption occurs initially in the smaller channels, and diffusion at low loading is limited by interaction between adsorbate and framework atoms. The larger channels provide a region of low density where molecules are able to diffuse at higher rates predominantly along the channel axes. The disparate size of the channels gives rise to heterogeneity in the diffusivity of the guest molecules, whereas the asymmetry of the channels leads to anisotropic diffusion. Together, the channels form a network of "highways" and "side streets" that provide enhanced diffusion in one dimension.

Abstract
Fundamental understanding of the mass transport of petrochemical and biomass derived molecules in microporous and mesoporous solid catalysts is important for developing the next generation of heterogeneous catalysts for traditional hydrocarbon processing including biomass pyrolysis and upgrading. Hierarchical zeolites with both micropores and mesopores exhibit enhanced mass transport and unique catalytic performance in reactions involving large molecules. However, quantitative description of mass transport in such materials remains elusive, owing to the complicated structure of hierarchical pores and difficulty in the synthesis of the materials with controllable structures. In this work, zero length column chromatography (ZLC) was used to study temperature-dependent diffusion of cyclohexane in silicalite-1, self-pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolite, and three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous imprinted (3DOm-i) silicalite-1. The samples were synthesized with controllable characteristic diffusion lengths from micrometer scale (ca. 20 μm) to nanometer scale (ca. 2 nm), allowing systematic study of the effect of mesoporosity on the mass transport behavior of hierarchical zeolites. The results show that the introduction of mesoporosity can indeed significantly facilitate the mass transport of cyclohexane in hierarchical silicalite-1 by reducing diffusional time constants, indicating rapid overall adsorption and desorption. However, when the length scale of the material approaches several nanometers, the contribution from the surface resistance, or "surface barrier", to overall mass transfer becomes dominant.

Abstract
The presence of mesopores in the interior of microporous particles may significantly improve their transport properties. Complementing previous macroscopic transient sorption experiments and pulsed field gradient NMR self-diffusion studies with such materials, the present study is dedicated to an in-depth study of molecular uptake and release on the individual particles of mesoporous zeolitic specimens, notably with samples of the narrow-pore structure types, CHA and LTA. The investigations are focused on determining the time constants and functional dependences of uptake and release. They include a systematic variation of the architecture of the mesopores and of the guest molecules under study as well as a comparison of transient uptake with blocked and un-blocked mesopores. In addition to accelerating intracrystalline mass transfer, transport enhancement by mesopores is found to be, possibly, also caused by a reduction of transport resistances on the particle surfaces.

Abstract
Great interest has arisen in the past years in the development of hierarchical zeolites, having at least two levels of porosities. Hierarchical zeolites show an enhanced accessibility, leading to improved catalytic activity in reactions suffering from steric and/or diffusional limitations. Moreover, the secondary porosity offers an ideal space for the deposition of additional active phases and for functionalization with organic moieties. However, the secondary surface represents a discontinuity of the crystalline framework, with a low connectivity and a high concentration of silanols. Consequently, hierarchical zeolites exhibit a less "zeolitic behaviour" than conventional ones in terms of acidity, hydrophobic/hydrophilic character, confinement effects, shape-selectivity and hydrothermal stability. Nevertheless, this secondary surface is far from being amorphous, which provides hierarchical zeolites with a set of novel features. A wide variety of innovative strategies have been developed for generating a secondary porosity in zeolites. In the present review, the different synthetic routes leading to hierarchical zeolites have been classified into five categories: removal of framework atoms, surfactant-assisted procedures, hard-templating, zeolitization of preformed solids and organosilane-based methods. Significant advances have been achieved recently in several of these alternatives. These include desilication, due to its versatility, dual templating with polyquaternary ammonium surfactants and framework reorganization by treatment with surfactant-containing basic solutions. In the last two cases, the materials so prepared show both mesoscopic ordering and zeolitic lattice planes. Likewise, interesting results have been obtained with the incorporation of different types of organosilanes into the zeolite crystallization gels, taking advantage of their high affinity for silicate and aluminosilicate species. Crystallization of organofunctionalized species favours the formation of organic-inorganic composites that, upon calcination, are transformed into hierarchical zeolites. However, in spite of this impressive progress in novel strategies for the preparation of hierarchical zeolites, significant challenges are still ahead. The overall one is the development of methods that are versatile in terms of zeolite structures and compositions, capable of tuning the secondary porosity properties, and being scaled up in a cost-effective way. Recent works have demonstrated that it is possible to scale-up easily the synthesis of hierarchical zeolites by desilication. Economic aspects may become a significant bottleneck for the commercial application of hierarchical zeolites since most of the synthesis strategies so far developed imply the use of more expensive procedures and reagents compared to conventional zeolites. Nevertheless, the use of hierarchical zeolites as efficient catalysts for the production of high value-added compounds could greatly compensate these increased manufacturing costs.

Abstract
Transport properties of cyclohexane confined to a silica material with an ordered, bimodal pore structure have been studied by means of pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance. A particular organization of the well-defined pore structure, composed of a collection of spatially ordered, spherical mesopores interconnected via narrow worm-like pores, allowed for a quantitative analysis of the diffusion process in a medium with spatially ordered distribution of the fluid density for a broad range of the gas-liquid equilibria. The measured diffusion data were interpreted in terms of effective diffusivities, which were determined within a microscopic model considering long-range molecular trajectories constructed by assembling the alternating pieces of displacement in the two constituting pore spaces. It has further been found that for the system under study, in particular, and for mesoporous materials with multiple porosities, in general, this generalized model simplifies to the conventional fast-exchange model used in the literature. Thus, not only was justification of the applicability of the fast-exchange model to a diversity of mesoporous materials provided, but the diffusion parameters entering the fast-exchange model were also exactly defined. The equation resulting in this way was found to nicely reproduce the experimentally determined diffusivities, establishing a methodology for targeted fine-tuning of transport properties of fluids in hierarchical materials with multiple porosities.
