Shear bond strength of adhesive cement to zirconia: Effect of added proportion of yttria for stabilization

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Zirconium dioxide (zirconia) cannot be etched in a clinical setting, but zirconia restorations with minimal to no micromechanical bonding are approved and widely used in contemporary dentistry. However, information on the shear bond strength of zirconia and adhesive cement, on the effect of an added proportion of yttria, and on the effect of aging is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of cement luted to zirconia and the effect of aging.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 131 test specimens were made from 4 zirconia materials with different amounts of yttria added to formulate yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ); 3Y-PSZ (n=32), 4Y-PSZ (n=34), and 2 5Y-PSZs (n=32 and n=33). A dual-polymerizing cement and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate-containing primer were used. All specimens were stored in water at 37 °C, half of them for 24 hours and the other half for 6 months. After aging, the specimens were subjected to a shear bond strength test with a notched crosshead according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022:2013 standard. The data were analyzed using the independent 2-sample t test, ANOVA, and the Levene test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The 3Y-PSZ material had higher mean ±standard deviation shear bond strength (31.83 ±12.80 MPa) compared with 4Y-PSZ (23.34 ±7.66 MPa) after 24 hours of aging in water and higher (28.98 ±14.03 MPa) than 4Y-PSZ (14.35 ±9.62 MPa) and one of the 5Y-PSZ (16.05 ±11.34 MPa) after 6 months. Debonding before loading occurred in all groups except for one of the 5Y-PSZ groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Zirconia without macromechanical retention, regardless of an added proportion of yttria, showed high shear bond strength, but the tested materials also had a high coefficient of variance, which, in practice, leads to the risk of the occasional debonding of zirconia restorations.

The effects of heating rate and sintering time on the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia ceramics

The strength of zirconia ceramic materials used in restorations is dependent upon sintering. Varying sintering protocols may affect the biaxial flexural strength of zirconia materials. This in vitro study was conducted to investigate the effects of sintering parameters on the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Two different monoblock zirconia ceramics were used. Following coloration, samples of both types of ceramics were divided into groups according to whether or not biaxial flexural strength testing was performed directly after sintering or following thermocycling. Biaxial flexural strength data was analysed with a Shapiro Wilk normality test, followed by 1-way ANOVA, Tukey post hoc tests for inter-group comparisons, and paired samples t-tests for intra-group comparisons. A significant difference was found between the biaxial flexural strengths of Zircon X and Upcera ceramics before thermocycling (p<0.05). In both Zircon X and Upcera ceramic groups, the thermocycling process created a significant difference in the biaxial flexural strength values of the ceramic samples in Group 6 (p<0.05) which had the slowest heating rate and longest holding time. The zirconia ceramics have higher BFS at higher heating rates either before or after thermocycling. The holding time has significant effects on thermocycling and flexural strength. The zirconia achieved its optimum strength when it sintered at longer time regardless of heating rates.

Bond strength of surface-treated novel high translucent zirconia to enamel

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of zirconia, stabilised with 5% yttria, luted to enamel and to evaluate the fracture pattern at loss of retention.

Methods: A total of 53 test specimen were manufactured from two partially stabilised zirconia materials, Zirkonzahn Prettau Anterior (ZPA) (n = 16) and Whitepeaks CopraSmile Symphony 5 layer (WCS) (n = 18), and a lithium disilicate (Ivoclar e.Max Press) (n = 19) acting as control. All test specimens were cemented to human enamel with Variolink Esthetic DC and then subjected to a shear bond strength test. Fracture and surface analysis were performed using light and scanning electron microscope.

Results: No significant differences in shear bond strength were detected when analysing the three groups. Dividing them according to the fracture pattern significant difference in shear bond strength between the two zirconia groups could be seen analysing test bodies with failure of adhesion to the test body, but not to enamel. The ZPA had higher shear bond strength (23.68 MPa) than WCS (13.00 MPa). No significant differences were seen compared to the control group (19.02 MPa).

Conclusion: Partially stabilised zirconia shows potential as a material to be used where macro mechanical bonding is not possible, although this study does not reveal how or if the bonding deteriorates over time.

Effect of extrinsic pigmentation and surface treatments on biaxial flexure strength after cyclic loading of a translucent ZrO2 ceramic

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of extrinsic pigmentation on the biaxial flexural strength and surface topographic of translucent Y-TZP (InCoris TZI - Sirona - USA) subjected to several surface treatments.

METHODS

Sintered zirconia discs-shaped specimens (n=120) (ø:12mm; thickness:1.2mm; ISO 6872) were prepared and divided (n=15) according to various factors: "extrinsic pigmentation" (n: without; p: with) and "surface treatments" (C: control - as sintered; A: abraded with silica-coated alumina particles (30μm); G: glazed with a thin film of low-fusing porcelain glaze; GH: glazed and etched with 10% hydrofluoridric acid for 60s. Mechanical cycling (1.2×106 cycles, 200N, 3.8Hz) and flexural strength test (1mm/min - 1000kg cell) were performed. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's were used for statistical test (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was used to evaluate the strength reliability. Samples were analyzed via (1) an optical profilometer to determine the surface roughness (Ra); (2) an X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate phase transformations; and (3) a SEM equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to elucidate morphological properties and chemical compositions.

RESULTS

Regardless of the surface treatment (p=0.5459) (Cn: 560.16MPa; Gn: 573.36MPa; An: 643.51MPa; GHn: 542.94MPa; Cp: 628.04MPa; Gp: 641.90MPa; Ap: 554.47MPa; GHp :602.84MPa) and extrinsic pigmentation (p=0.1280) there was no difference in the flexural strength among the experimental groups. According to the XRD analysis, phase transformations occurred in the An group (t→m) and in Ap group (t→c). Surface roughness was affected by surface treatments (An - p=0.001) and extrinsic pigmentation (Gp - p=0.001).

SIGNIFICANCE

The biaxial flexural strength of the tested samples was not affected neither by surface treatments nor by pigmentation, although it can cause phase transformation and promote surface roughness.

Influence of heating rate on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia

PURPOSE

Fabrication of zirconia restorations with ideal mechanical properties in a short period is a great challenge for clinicians. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of heating rate on the mechanical and microstructural properties of monolithic zirconia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty monolithic zirconia specimens were prepared from presintered monolithic zirconia blanks. All specimens were then assigned to 4 groups according to heating rate as Control, Group 15℃, Group 20℃, and Group 40℃. All groups were sintered according to heating rates with the sintering temperature of 1500℃, a holding time of 90 minutes and natural cooling. The phase composition was examined by XRD analysis, three-point bending test was conducted to examine the flexural strength, and Weibull analysis was conducted to determine weibull modulus and characteristic strength. Average grain sizes were determined by SEM analysis. One-way ANOVA test was performed at a significance level of 0.05.

RESULTS

Only tetragonal phase characteristic peaks were determined on the surface of analyzed specimens. Differences among the average grain sizes of the groups were not statistically significant. The results of the three-point bending test revealed no significant differences among the flexural strength of the groups (P>.05). Weibull modulus of groups was ranging from 3.50 to 4.74. The highest and the lowest characteristic strength values were obtained in Group 20℃ and Control Group, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Heating rate has no significant effect on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Monolithic zirconia restorations can be produced in shorter sintering periods without affecting the flexural strength by modifying the heating rate.
