Abstract
BACKGROUND Night-shift work is a crucial component of nursing but is associated with significant fatigue, which may impact both nurse well-being and patient safety. Understanding the levels of fatigue and the coping strategies employed by nurses can help develop effective interventions. This study aimed to assess the fatigue levels of Chinese night-shift nurses and explore commonly used anti-fatigue strategies. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Zhejiang Province, China, using the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER) questionnaire. The survey assessed acute and chronic fatigue levels, fatigue recovery, and anti-fatigue strategies among nurses. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0. RESULTS Among the 371 valid responses, chronic fatigue levels (66.41 ± 24.17) were higher than acute fatigue levels (57.31 ± 15.61). Nurses with higher education levels reported lower acute fatigue, while older, more experienced nurses and those working in higher-grade hospitals had lower chronic fatigue. Common coping strategies included naps (63.88%) and stimulant consumption (54.72%), with coffee (45.37%) and milk tea (23.28%) being the most popular drinks. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that Chinese night-shift nurses experience substantial fatigue, especially chronic fatigue, which is influenced by factors including education, age, clinical experience, exercise frequency, and hospital grade. Although personal coping strategies are common, they fall short in mitigating fatigue, underscoring the need for comprehensive interventions that combine individual and organizational measures. Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death and the most common cancer among women worldwide. It is crucial to identify potentially modifiable risk factors to intervene and prevent breast cancer effectively. Sleep factors have emerged as a potentially novel risk factor for female breast cancer. Current epidemiologic studies suggest a significant impact of sleep factors on breast cancer. Exposure to abnormal sleep duration, poor sleep quality, sleep disorders, sleep medication use, or night shift work can increase the risk of breast cancer by decreasing melatonin secretion, disrupting circadian rhythm, compromising immune function, or altering hormone levels. However, there are still controversies regarding the epidemiologic association, and the underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. This paper summarizes the epidemiologic evidence on the associations between sleep factors, including sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep disorders, sleep medication use, sleep habits, and night shift work, and the development of breast cancer. The potential mechanisms underlying these associations were also reviewed.

Abstract
Sleep medicine and internal medicine share a global and transdisciplinary vision of human physiology and illnesses, with an approach guided by the complaint and semiology. In France, approximately 13 to 18 million individuals suffer from a sleep disorder: these disorders therefore represent a public health problem. Their comorbidities with systemic autoimmune diseases are frequent. As such, this article suggests an approach to screening for sleep disorders in daily clinical practice of internal medicine leading, when appropriate, to request specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic care in sleep medicine to substantially improve patients' quality of life.

Abstract
BackgroundAutoimmune diseases can reduce ovarian reserves. Women in reproductive ages are susceptible to an autoimmune disorder known as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The aim of this study is to investigate the association between APS and ovarian reserve (OR).MethodPubMed, Scopus, Web-of-Science, Science Direct, and the Google scholar search engine were searched (22 June 2024) for studies that investigated the effect of APS on OR. Literature screening, data extraction, and assessment of the risk of bias of the included studies were conducted by two reviewers independently. Mean differences were computed using a random effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed by I2%.ResultsFour cross-sectional studies were included in this meta-analysis. None of the studies had a high risk of bias. There was no significant association identified between primary (MD = -0.27, 95% CI, -1.42 to 0.87, p = 0.639) and secondary APS (SMD = -0.38, 95% CI, -2.46 to 1.69, p = 0.717) with antimullerian hormone amounts. The antral follicle count (AFC) was investigated in two studies revealed lower levels of AFC in women with primary APS. Regarding the levels of gonadotropins and estradiol in the participants' serum, the results are contradictory.ConclusionsThe results of this meta-analysis identified there is no relationship between primary and secondary APS with the reduction of ovarian reserves in women with APS. This issue should be considered in the reproductive health of women with APS, who can have children at the right time by consulting a rheumatologist and reproductive health specialist.

Abstract
Laboratory and animal studies indicate that melatonin exerts a negative impact on breast cancer progression and metastasis. These actions are both receptor-dependent and -independent. Of the two transmembrane melatonin receptors identified in humans, breast cancer expresses only MT1. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of MT1 in hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative invasive ductal breast carcinoma in postmenopausal women and its possible correlations with clinicopathological parameters and survival. A total of 118 patients with luminal A/B primary breast cancer with or without axillary metastases were identified. The MT1 receptor expression was immunohistochemically assessed as a percentage of stained cells and a weighted index (WI) (percentage multiplied by staining intensity). Most tumor samples (84.7%) and metastasized lymph nodes (96%) stained positive for MT1, with varying intensity. No statistically significant correlations were found between the MT1 expression or the WI in the primary tumor and the patient and tumor characteristics, or the MT1 and WI in the metastasized lymph nodes. The survival analysis did not reveal a significant effect of MT1 expression or the WI on the risk of recurrence or survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the association between breast cancer and work burden over 25 years. METHODS The study was based on the Kuopio Osteoporosis Risk Factor and Prevention (OSTPRE) cohort (n = 14,220) and included women who had answered the questionnaire from the year 1994 and had no previous breast cancer. Breast cancer cases were recorded from the Finnish Cancer Registry during the study period: from 1st June 1994 till December 31, 2019. Using questionnaires, we collected information on work burden, body mass index (BMI), menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), alcohol consumption, parity, and family history of breast cancer. Work burden was categorized as low or high. Variables were used both in the univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses to explore their associations with breast cancer. RESULTS Altogether 825 women (6.9%) were diagnosed with breast cancer during the study period with a mean follow-up of 13.3 ± 7.2 years. Women with breast cancer were compared to those without breast cancer during the follow-up period (n = 11,117). A low work burden was associated with a 1.3-fold higher incidence of breast cancer (95% confidence interval 1.2-1.6) than a high work burden. Low work burden was associated with an increased breast cancer risk. CONCLUSION Low work burden is associated with elevated postmenopausal breast cancer risk in the 25-year follow-up period.

Abstract
Objectives Sleep health and other lifestyle behaviours are gaining increasing attention in public health, particularly for cancer prevention, but a comprehensive assessment is lacking. Methods The study included 380,042 UK Biobank participants. A healthy sleep score was constructed based on five sleep factors: chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime dozing. A healthy lifestyle score was constructed based on four lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and physical activity. The effect of healthy sleep and lifestyle on cancer risk was examined by Cox proportional hazard models. Results Both healthy sleep and lifestyle patterns were significantly associated with a reduced risk of overall cancer and specific cancer sites. Participants with healthy sleep and lifestyle patterns had a lower risk of overall cancer (HR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.68-0.77), liver cancer (HR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.31-0.90), bladder cancer (HR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.47-0.79), lung cancer (HR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.19-0.27), and colorectal cancer (HR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.66-0.96) compared to those with unhealthy patterns. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of public health education and interventions to improve sleep and other lifestyle behaviours for cancer prevention.

Abstract
PURPOSE Circadian rhythm-related genes (CRRGs) play essential roles in cancer occurrence and development. However, the prognostic significance of CRRGs in breast cancer (BC) has not been fully elucidated. Our study aimed to develop a prognostic gene signature based on CRRGs that can accurately and stably predict the prognosis of BC. METHODS The transcriptome data and clinical information for BC patients were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. A consensus unsupervised clustering analysis was carried out to investigate the roles of CRRGs in BC. A CRRGs-related prognostic risk model was established by using logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression and univariate Cox regression analyses. Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves analysis, time-dependent receptor operation characteristics (ROC) curves analysis, and nomogram were plotted to evaluate the predictive efficacy of the model. The relevance of risk score to the immune cell infiltration, tumor burden mutation (TMB), and therapeutic response was assessed. RESULTS A risk model comprising six CRRGs (SLC44A4, SLC16A6, TPRG1, FABP7, GLYATL2, and FDCSP) was constructed and validated, demonstrating an effective predictor for the prognosis of BC. The low-risk group displayed a higher expression of immune checkpoint genes and a lower burden of tumor mutation. Additionally, drug sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the prognostic signature may serve as a potential chemosensitivity predictor. CONCLUSION We established a CRRGs-related risk signature, which is of great value in predicting the prognosis of patients with BC and guiding the treatment for BC.

Abstract
Exposure to artificial light-at-night (ALAN) has been linked to cancer risk. Few meta-analyses on this topic have reviewed only breast cancer. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze existing studies on ALAN exposure and cancer incidence, thoroughly evaluating exposure assessment quality. We considered observational studies (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional) on ALAN exposure (indoor and outdoor) and cancer incidence, measured by relative risk, hazard ratio, and odds ratio. We searched six databases, two registries, and Google Scholar from inception until April 17, 2024. Quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for ALAN exposures. We identified 9835 studies and included 28 for qualitative synthesis with 2,508,807 individuals (15 cohort, 13 case-control). Out of the included studies, 20 studies on breast cancer (731,493 individuals) and 2 studies on prostate cancer (53,254 individuals) were used for quantitative synthesis. Higher levels of outdoor ALAN were associated with breast cancer risk (meta-estimate = 1.12, 95 % CI 1.03-1.23 (I2 = 69 %)). We observed a non-significant positive association between indoor ALAN levels and breast cancer risk (meta-estimate = 1.07, 0.95-1.21, I2 = 60 %), and no differences by menopausal status. The meta-analysis for prostate cancer suggested a non-statistically significant increased risk for higher levels of outdoor ALAN (meta-estimate = 1.43, 0.75-2.72, I2 = 90 %). In the qualitative synthesis, we observed positive associations with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and colorectal, pancreatic and thyroid cancer. We found an association between outdoor ALAN and breast cancer risk. However, most studies relied on satellite-images with a very low resolution (1 to 5 km, from the Defense Meteorological Program [DMSP]) and without information on color of light. Future studies with better exposure assessment should focus on investigating other cancer sites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Circadian rhythms, the endogenous biological clocks that govern physiological processes, have emerged as pivotal regulators in the development and progression of breast cancer. This comprehensive review delves into the intricate interplay between circadian disruption and breast tumorigenesis from multifaceted perspectives, encompassing biological rhythms, circadian gene regulation, tumor microenvironment dynamics, and genetic polymorphisms. METHODS AND RESULTS Epidemiological evidence underscores the profound impact of external factors, such as night shift work, jet lag, dietary patterns, and exercise routines, on breast cancer risk and progression through the perturbation of circadian homeostasis. The review elucidates the distinct roles of key circadian genes, including CLOCK, BMAL1, PER, and CRY, in breast cancer biology, highlighting their therapeutic potential as molecular targets. Additionally, it investigates how circadian rhythm dysregulation shapes the tumor microenvironment, fostering epithelial-mesenchymal transition, chronic inflammation, and immunosuppression, thereby promoting tumor progression and metastasis. Furthermore, the review sheds light on the association between circadian gene polymorphisms and breast cancer susceptibility, paving the way for personalized risk assessment and tailored treatment strategies. CONCLUSIONS Importantly, it explores innovative therapeutic modalities that harness circadian rhythms, including chronotherapy, melatonin administration, and traditional Chinese medicine interventions. Overall, this comprehensive review emphasizes the critical role of circadian rhythms in the pathogenesis of breast cancer and highlights the promising prospects for the development of circadian rhythm-based interventions to enhance treatment efficacy and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
(1) Background: Shift work can affect physical health and the immune system by altering the body's circadian rhythms. This study investigated the factors associated with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination response in manufacturing workers, classified by whether they engaged in shift work or not. (2) Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted among adults employed at two manufacturing companies. Those with negative initial hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) levels before vaccination and who subsequently received a three-dose series of HBV vaccine were enrolled. Hepatitis B surface antibodies were examined for 3 years after the first dose. The endpoint of this study was the failure of a seroprotective anti-HB response after vaccination (HBsAb < 10 mIU/mL). Binary logistic regression models were used to analyze factors associated with response failures. (3) Results: Of the 1103 eligible subjects, 337 (30.6%) were shift workers. The failure rate was numerically higher in the shift workers (9.2%) than in the non-shift workers (7.9%), without statistical significance (p = 0.405). However, after adjustment with the binary logistic regression models, the shift workers had a statistically significantly higher rate of response failures than the non-shift workers (odds ratio 2.87; 95% confidence interval 1.64-5.05, p < 0.001), as did males, older workers, those with a low initial anti-HB titer, those with a vitamin D deficiency, and current smokers. (4) Conclusions: Our findings suggest a possible association between shift work and the serologic responses to HBV vaccination. Novel strategies for vaccination should be considered for shift workers.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms dictate the timing of cellular and organismal physiology to maintain homeostasis. Within the liver and gut, circadian rhythms influence lipid and glucose homeostasis, xenobiotic metabolism, and nutrient absorption. Disruption of this orchestrated timing is known to negatively impact human health and contribute to disease progression, including carcinogenesis. Dysfunctional core clock timing has been identified in malignant growths and may be used as a molecular signature of disease progression. Likewise, the circadian clock and its downstream effectors also represent potential for novel therapeutic targets. Here, the role of circadian rhythms in the pathogenesis of cancers of the liver and gut will be reviewed, and chronotherapy and chronopharmacology will be explored as potential treatment options.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a relatively common disease, and preventing its occurrence is important for both individual health and reducing social costs. Shift work is reported to have several negative effects on health. An association has been observed between NAFLD and both sleep time and quality; however, this association remains unclear in night shift workers. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between shift work and the incidence of NAFLD. Overall, 45,149 Korean workers without NAFLD were included at baseline. NAFLD was defined as the presence of a fatty liver observed on ultrasonography without excessive alcohol use. incidence rate ratios for incident NAFLD were estimated using negative binomial regression according to age groups (20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s). In the 20s age group, shift work showed a significant incidence rate ratio (IRR) for NAFLD in all models. After adjusting for all variables, the IRR (95% confidence interval) was 1.24 (1.08-1.43) in the 20s age group. In their 20s, a significant association between shift work and incident NAFLD was consistently observed among women and workers with poor sleep quality. In this large-scale cohort study, shift work was significantly associated with the development of NAFLD among young workers in their 20s.

Abstract
Breast cancer remains a significant contributor to cancer-related deaths among women globally. We seek for this study to examine the correlation between the incidence rates of breast cancer and newly identified risk factors. Additionally, we aim to utilize machine learning models to predict breast cancer incidence at a country level. Following an extensive review of the available literature, we have identified a range of recently studied risk factors associated with breast cancer. Subsequently, we gathered data on these factors and breast cancer incidence rates from numerous online sources encompassing 151 countries. To evaluate the relationship between these factors and breast cancer incidence, we assessed the normality of the data and conducted Spearman's correlation test. Furthermore, we refined six regression models to forecast future breast cancer incidence rates. Our findings indicate that the incidence of breast cancer is most positively correlated with the average age of women in a country, as well as factors such as meat consumption, CO2 emissions, depression, sugar consumption, tobacco use, milk intake, mobile cells, alcohol consumption, pesticides, and oral contraceptive use. As for prediction, the CatBoost Regressor successfully predicted future breast cancer incidence with an R squared value of 0.84 ± 0.03. An increased incidence of breast cancer is mainly associated with dietary habits and lifestyle. Our findings and recommendations can serve as a baseline for developing educational programs intended to heighten awareness amongst women in countries with heightened risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The hypothesis of this study is night shift work exposure can increase the risk of female breast cancer. To validate this hypothesis, the authors conducted a two-stage dose-response meta-analysis with improved quality on this topic. METHODS The medical librarian searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library on December 30th, 2022. The eight inclusion criteria were determined and strictly applied to the selection process. A reliable dose-response meta-analysis methodology was applied. RESULTS Reliable 10 cohort (total cases: 15,953, and total person-years: 6,812,138) and 11 case-control reports (total cases: 9196, and total controls:12,210) were included in the final analysis. The pooled risk ratio (RR) of female breast cancer (from cohort studies) for 1, 10, 20, and 30 years of night shift work exposure was 1.0042 (95% CI 1.0014-1.0070), 1.0425 (95% CI 1.0138-1.0719), 1.0867 (95% CI 1.0278-1.1490), and 1.1328 (95% CI 1.0419-1.2317), respectively. The pooled odds ratio (OR) of female breast cancer (from case-control studies) for 1, 10, 20, and 30 years of night shift work exposure was 1.0213 (95% CI 1.0108-1.0319), 1.2346 (95% CI 1.1129-1.3695), 1.5242 (95% CI 1.2386-1.8756), and 1.8817 (95% CI 1.3784-2.5687), respectively. DISCUSSION This study has several strengths from the perspective of a dose-response meta-analysis: Strictly applied eight inclusion criteria, separately synthesized RRs from cohort studies and ORs from case-control studies, clearly defined exposure dose, years of night shift work for each risk estimate, a reliable dose-response meta-analysis methodology, and careful considering of selection, exposure, and outcome biases and confounder adjustment for each study. This careful consideration of potential biases and confounding led to the exclusion of unreliable two cohort and five case-control studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has found associations between various non-genetic factors and breast cancer (BrCa) risk. This study summarises and appraises the credibility of the available evidence on the association between non-genetic factors and BrCa risk. METHODS We conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses. Medline, Scopus, and the Cochrane databases were systematically searched for meta-analyses examining non-genetic factors and BrCa incidence or mortality. The strength of the evidence was graded in four categories (i.e., weak, suggestive, highly suggestive, convincing). RESULTS A total of 781 meta-analyses from 280 publications were evaluated and graded. We included exposures related to anthropometric measurements, biomarkers, breast characteristics and diseases, diet and supplements, environment, exogenous hormones, lifestyle and social factors, medical history, medication, reproductive history, and pregnancy. The largest number of examined associations was found for the category of diet and supplements and for exposures such as aspirin use and active smoking. The statistically significant (P-value < 0.05) meta-analyses were 382 (49%), of which 204 (53.4%) reported factors associated with increased BrCa risk. Most of the statistically significant evidence (n = 224, 58.6%) was graded as weak. Convincing harmful associations with heightened BrCa risk were found for increased body mass index (BMI), BMI and weight gain in postmenopausal women, oral contraceptive use in premenopausal women, increased androstenedione, estradiol, estrone, and testosterone concentrations, high Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS) classification, and increased breast density. Convincing protective factors associated with lower BrCa risk included high fiber intake and high sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels while highly suggestive protective factors included high 25 hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels, adherence to healthy lifestyle, and moderate-vigorous physical activity. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest some highly modifiable factors that protect from BrCa. Interestingly, while diet was the most studied exposure category, the related associations failed to reach higher levels of evidence, indicating the methodological limitations in the field. To improve the validity of these associations, future research should utilise more robust study designs and better exposure assessment techniques. Overall, our study provides knowledge that supports the development of evidence-based BrCa prevention recommendations and guidance, both at an individual level and for public health initiatives. Abstract
Background As the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and computers continues to rise globally, concerns have been raised about their potential impact on human health. Exposure to high energy visible (HEV) blue light, emitted from digital screens, particularly the so-called artificial light at night (ALAN), has been associated with adverse health effects, ranging from disruption of circadian rhythms to cancer. Breast cancer incidence rates are also increasing worldwide. Objective This study aimed at finding a correlation between breast cancer and exposure to blue light from mobile phone. Material and Methods In this retrospective matched case-control study, we aimed to investigate whether exposure to blue light from mobile phone screens is associated with an increased risk of female breast cancer. We interviewed 301 breast cancer patients (cases) and 294 controls using a standard questionnaire and performed multivariate analysis, chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests for data analysis. Results Although heavy users in the case group of our study had a statistically significant higher mean 10-year cumulative exposure to digital screens compared to the control group (7089±14985 vs 4052±12515 hours, respectively, P=0.038), our study did not find a strong relationship between exposure to HEV and development of breast cancer. Conclusion Our findings suggest that heavy exposure to HEV blue light emitted from mobile phone screens at night might constitute a risk factor for promoting the development of breast cancer, but further large-scale cohort studies are warranted.

Abstract
Glioblastoma is one of the most lethal cancers with current therapeutic options lacking major successes. This underlines the necessity to understand glioblastoma biology on other levels and use these learnings for the development of new therapeutic concepts. Mounting evidence in the field of circadian medicine points to a tight interplay between disturbances of the circadian system and glioblastoma progression. The circadian clock, an internal biological mechanism governing numerous physiological processes across a 24-h cycle, also plays a pivotal role in regulationg key cellular functions, including DNA repair, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis. These processes are integral to tumour development and response to therapy. Disruptions in circadian rhythms can influence tumour growth, invasion, and response to treatment in glioblastoma patients. In this review, we explore the robust association between the circadian clock, and cancer hallmarks within the context of glioblastoma. We further discuss the impact of the circadian clock on eight cancer hallmarks shown previously to link the molecular clock to different cancers, and summarize the putative role of clock proteins in circadian rhythm disturbances and chronotherapy in glioblastoma. By unravelling the molecular mechanisms behind the intricate connections between the circadian clock and glioblastoma progression, researchers can pave the way for the identification of potential therapeutic targets, the development of innovative treatment strategies and personalized medicine approaches. In conclusion, this review underscores the significant influence of the circadian clock on the advancement and understanding of future therapies in glioblastoma, ultimately leading to enhanced outcomes for glioblastoma patients.

Abstract
Previous studies found that the circadian clock gene participated in the genesis and development of breast cancer. However, research findings on the relationship between polymorphisms in the CLOCK gene and breast cancer risk were inconsistent. This study performed a meta-analysis of the association between CLOCK gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk. PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were electronically searched to collect studies on the association between CLOCK gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk from inception to February 14, 2022. The quality of the included literature was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. For statistical analysis, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using STATA 14.0. In addition, publication bias was performed by the funnel diagram and the Harbord's regression test. And sensitivity analysis was assessed by the trim and fill method. A total of 6 eligible studies, including 10,164 subjects (5488 breast cancer cases and 4676 controls), were screened in this meta-analysis. Though we did not find a significant association between the polymorphisms in the overall CLOCK gene with breast cancer risk [OR (95%CI) = 0.98 (0.96, 1.01), P = 0.148], we found that compared with T/T types of rs3749474 in CLOCK, T/C and C/C types of rs3749474 were associated with lower risk of breast cancer [OR (95%CI) = 0.93 (0.88, 0.98), P = 0.003]. The sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the results. The funnel plot showed no significant publication bias. Polymorphisms in the CLOCK gene might be associated with breast cancer risk. More studies are needed to confirm the conclusion.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to elucidate the effects of long-term day and night shifts on liver function and lipid metabolism in a group of nurses. Methods This cross-sectional study in December 2019 was based on a group of nurses. A total of 1,253 physically healthy caregivers were included, including 1231 women and 22 men. A total of 886 nurses had long-term shift work (working in a rotating system for >1 year). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate factors related to long-term shift work. Results We observed differences in liver and kidney indicators between the non-night and night shift groups. The ROC curve revealed that CHO (AUC: 62.4%), LDLC (AUC: 62%), and GLUO (AUC: 61.5%) were more related to the night shift. Logistic regression analysis showed that night shift work was associated significantly with CREA (log (OR) = -0.02, 95% CI: -0.04 to -0.01), CHO (log (OR) = -0.38, 95% CI: -0.67 to -0.09), and GLUO (log (OR) = -0.35, 95% CI: -0.56 to -0.17). This correlation was observed only for CHO and LDHC (CHO: log (OR) = -0.55, 95% CI: -0.98 to -0.12; LDLC: log (OR) = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.32, 1.4) after age standardization. After using propensity score matching, we did not find evidence to support that the indicators differed between night and non-night shift groups. Conclusion Our study observed an association of long-term night work with abnormal liver and kidney function and dyslipidemia, but the difference was not significant after strict age matching. Although these findings may support interventions for long-term night shift nurses, more detailed studies are needed to confirm.

Abstract
Cancer is amenable to low-cost treatments, given that it has a significant metabolic component, which can be affected through diet and lifestyle change at minimal cost. The Warburg hypothesis states that cancer cells have an altered cell metabolism towards anaerobic glycolysis. Given this metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells, it is possible to target cancers metabolically by depriving them of glucose. In addition to dietary and lifestyle modifications which work on tumors metabolically, there are a panoply of nutritional supplements and repurposed drugs associated with cancer prevention and better treatment outcomes. These interventions and their evidentiary basis are covered in the latter half of this review to guide future cancer treatment.

Abstract
Shift work, experienced by nearly 30% of the U.S. workforce, is hazardous to health and has become a pervasive labor practice in the healthcare sector worldwide. It increases the risk of stroke, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Nonetheless, specific screening targets for shift workers still need to be defined. In this study, we have begun uncovering these targets as specific low-grade systemic inflammation markers and functional endotoxin-elicited responses that may foreshadow disease risk in shift workers. One hundred four participants (normothermic and normotensive) were healthy, non-smoking, and drug- and medication-free volunteers recruited from Atlanta area hospitals and medical schools. We assessed the concentration of three proteins in plasma samples from day workers and shift workers (lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, IL-10, and TNF-α), and the relationship between these baseline biomarkers and their response to an ex-vivo endotoxin challenge. We show that shift work increases low-grade systemic inflammation and disrupts discrete endotoxin responses. As shift work exposure increases, the correlation between low-grade systemic inflammation markers and their endotoxin responses was disrupted; this effect was more robust for TNF-α than for IL-10. With increased shift work exposure, these events, alone or combined, represent potential systemic and functional signals that may be harnessed to develop screening tools to identify at-risk individuals.

Abstract
There are several types of shift work in Korea: rotating shift, 24-hour shift, day-night shift, fixed night work, and.so on. As a result of analyzing the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the 6th Korean Working Condition Survey, Korean shift workers accounted for 11.6%-13.9% of wage workers. Weekly working hours of shift workers were 57.69 ± 1.73 (24-hours shift) and 49.97 ± 0.67 (fixed night shift), which were significantly longer than day workers. To prevent health consequences of night work, many countries regulate the working hours of night work not to exceed 7-9 hours a day. However, Korea does not regulate working hours for night work, and some occupations may work more hours than the prescribed overtime hours. To prevent health consequences and reduce working hours for Korean night shift workers, it is necessary to regulate the working hours of night shift workers by law.

Abstract
Introduction Occupation can contribute to differences in risk and stage at diagnosis of breast cancer. This study aimed at determining whether occupation, along with skill level and the socio-professional category, affect the breast cancer survival (BCS) up to 10 years after diagnosis. Materials and methods We used cancer registry records to identify women diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer in western Switzerland over the period 1990-2014 and matched them with the Swiss National Cohort. The effect of work-related variables on BCS was assessed using non-parametric and parametric net survival methods. Results Study sample included 8,678 women. In the non-parametric analysis, we observed a statistically significant effect of all work-related variables on BCS. Women in elementary occupations, with low skill level, and in paid employment not classified elsewhere, had the lowest BCS, while professionals, those with the highest skill level and belonging to top management and independent profession category had the highest BCS. The parametric analysis confirmed this pattern. Considering elementary occupations as reference, all occupations but Craft and related trades had a hazard ratio (HR) below 1. Among professionals, technicians and associate professionals, and clerks, the protective effect of occupation was statistically significant and remained unchanged after adjustment for age, calendar period, registry, nationality, and histological type. After adjusting for tumor stage, the HRs increased only slightly, though turned non-significant. The same effect was observed in top management and independent professions and supervisors, low level management and skilled laborers, compared to unskilled employees. Conclusion These results suggest that work-related factors may affect BCS. Yet, this study was conducted using a limited set of covariates and a relatively small study sample. Therefore, further larger studies are needed for more detailed analyses of at risk occupations and working conditions and assessing the potential interaction between work-related variables and tumor stage.

Abstract
A few studies suggested that female nightshift workers suffer more frequently from sleep deprivation and insomnia. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in two different occupational settings to address gender-related differences in nightshift work adaptation. We used the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaires to quantify daytime sleepiness and sleep quality among 156 workers, 91 from a ceramic tile factory and 65 healthcare workers, including hospital doctors, nurses, and nurse assistants. Seventy-three percent of participants (40 women and 74 men) were engaged in nightshift work. We used logistic regression analysis to predict daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality as a function of personal and lifestyle variables and nightshift work. The female gender showed a strong association with both daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality. Results were also suggestive of an increase in the risk of daytime sleepiness associated with nightshift work and being married. Our results confirm that women are especially vulnerable to sleep disruption. Promoting adaptation to nightshift work requires special attention towards gender issues.

Abstract
PURPOSE Circadian rhythm disruptors (e.g., night-shift work) are risk factors for breast cancer, however studies on their association with prognosis is limited. A small but growing body of research suggests that altered sleep patterns and eating behaviours are potential mechanistic links between circadian rhythm disruptors and breast cancer. We therefore systematically summarised literature examining the influence of circadian rhythm disrupting behaviours on cancer outcomes in women with breast cancer. METHODS A systematic search of five databases from inception to January 2021 was conducted. Original research published in English, assessing the relationship between post-diagnosis sleep patters and eating behaviours, and breast cancer outcomes were considered. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Assessment Scale for Cohort Studies. RESULTS Eight studies published original evidence addressing sleep duration and/or quality (k = 7) and, eating time and frequency (k = 1). Longer sleep duration (≥ 9 h versus [referent range] 6-8 h) was consistently associated with increased risk of all outcomes of interest (HR range: 1.37-2.33). There was limited evidence to suggest that measures of better sleep quality are associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR range: 0.29-0.97). Shorter nightly fasting duration (< 13 h versus ≥ 13 h) was associated with higher risk of all breast cancer outcomes (HR range: 1.21-1.36). CONCLUSION Our review suggests that circadian rhythm disrupting behaviours may influence cancer outcomes in women with breast cancer. While causality remains unclear, to further understand these associations future research directions have been identified. Additional well-designed studies, examining other exposures (e.g., light exposure, temporal eating patterns), biomarkers, and patient-reported outcomes, in diverse populations (e.g., breast cancer subtype-specific, socio-demographic diversity) are warranted.

Abstract
The circadian rhythm is regulated by an intrinsic time-tracking system, composed both of a central and a peripheral clock, which influences the cycles of activities and sleep of an individual over 24 h. At the molecular level, the circadian rhythm begins when two basic helix-loop-helix/Per-ARNT-SIM (bHLH-PAS) proteins, BMAL-1 and CLOCK, interact with each other to produce BMAL-1/CLOCK heterodimers in the cytoplasm. The BMAL-1/CLOCK target genes encode for the repressor components of the clock, cryptochrome (Cry1 and Cry2) and the Period proteins (Per1, Per2 and Per3). It has been recently demonstrated that the disruption of circadian rhythm is associated with an increased risk of developing obesity and obesity-related diseases. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the disruption of the circadian rhythm plays a key role in tumorigenesis. Further, an association between the circadian rhythm disruptions and an increased incidence and progression of several types of cancer (e.g., breast, prostate, colorectal and thyroid cancer) has been found. As the perturbation of circadian rhythm has adverse metabolic consequences (e.g., obesity) and at the same time tumor promoter functions, this manuscript has the aim to report how the aberrant circadian rhythms affect the development and prognosis of different types of obesity-related cancers (breast, prostate, colon rectal and thyroid cancer) focusing on both human studies and on molecular aspects.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms are generated by the circadian clock, a self-sustained internal timing system that exhibits 24-h rhythms in the body. Many metabolic, cellular, behavioral and physiological processes are regulated by the circadian clock in coordination with environmental cues. The present study is a comprehensive review of the currently existing evidence concerning the relationship between circadian rhythms and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. We thoroughly searched the online databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to find the existing clinical studies from the last twenty-three years (2000-2023). Circadian misalignment was found to be associated with an increase in the risk of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, as well as inadequate sleep quality. In this review article, all the included studies had a strength protocol design and all of them were conducted on humans. However, the most common limitations of them were the small sample size and the short time of the intervention. In conclusion, managing the factors that disrupt the optimal function of central and peripheral clocks can help to reduce the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, improving also sleep quality. Future studies should further explore the underlying mechanisms of the interconnections between circadian clocks and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. This may provide new opportunities for advance chronotherapy approach.

Abstract
Studies had suggested an association between circadian disruptors (including night shift work, domestic light exposure at night, sleep duration, and circadian gene polymorphism) and breast cancer, while rare studies had been conducted in the Chinese population. This study was a case-control study conducted to explore the impact of circadian disruptors on the risk of breast cancer in China. Four hundred and sixty-four cases and 464 controls, admitted from the Department of Breast Surgery, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, were included in this study. Adjusting age, BMI group, smoking, alcohol consumption, menopausal status, family history of breast cancer, duration of breastfeeding, age at menarche, number of pregnancies, age at first full-term pregnancy, use of estrogen and use of oral contraceptive, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of breast cancer was higher in short sleep duration group (OR = 4.86, 95%CI: 1.73-17.33). Meanwhile, rs2292912 in CRY2, rs2253820 in PER1, rs2289591 in PER1 and rs3027188 in PER1 were positively associated with the risk of breast cancer. This study supported that the short duration of sleep and four SNPs in crucial circadian genes played a role in the development of breast cancer.

Shift work and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease incidence among Chinese rail workers: a 4-year longitudinal cohort study. Int Arch Occup Environ Health 2023; 96:179-190. Abstract
PURPOSE Occupational harmful factors, such as shift work, are attracting increasing attention as a potential cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, we aimed to identify the association between shift work and NAFLD incidence in Chinese rail population. METHODS A cohort study was conducted among 14,112 rail workers for 4-year follow-up. Shift work frequency and other potential variables were recorded by questionnaires, including demographic, lifestyle, and occupation information. Besides, body mass index, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase were measured by anthropometric measurement and blood test. Diagnosis of new NAFLD case was based on abdominal ultrasonography. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine whether shift work has effect on occurrence of NAFLD. RESULTS The incidence of NAFLD was 30.43% in total subjects. After adjustment for possible confounders, the RRs of NAFLD were 1.069 (95% CI 0.998-1.146) and 1.179 (95% CI 1.059-1.312) in occasionally shift work group and frequently shift work group respectively, compared to the seldom shift work group. In stratified analyses, the RRs of NAFLD incidence linked to shift work exposure seems increase among female and elder. The results of three sensitivity analyses were similar with main analysis. CONCLUSIONS This research provided further evidence of positive harmful effect of shift work on NAFLD incidence in Chinese rail workers, particularly in frequently shift work population. The risk estimate of shift work on NAFLD was higher in female and elder.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in Iran. Understanding the coping strategies employed by cancer survivors can provide valuable information for designing interventions to help them adapt to the problems produced by cancer and its treatment. This study aimed to explore the coping strategies of BC survivors in Iran. Methods This qualitative study was conducted in Mashhad, Northeast Iran, between April and December 2021. Fourteen BC survivors were selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis adopted by Graneheim and Lundman. MAXQDA 12 software was used for data organization. Components of trustworthiness, including credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability, were considered. Results The main categories that emerged from the participants' data analysis were “behavioral coping strategies” and “emotional coping strategies.” Behavioral coping strategies included efforts to adopt healthy nutrition, attempts to improve a healthy lifestyle, maintenance of everyday activities, use of specialized cancer support consultation services, and seeking to increase health literacy about BC. The emotional coping strategies consisted of denial as a temporary escape route, positive thinking and focusing on the positive aspects of life, reinforcement of spirituality, and seeking the support of relatives. Conclusion Our findings provide an in-depth understanding of Iranian women’s strategies for coping with BC. A trained team of oncologists, psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and reproductive health specialists needs to contribute significantly to improving the coping ability of patients with cancer, which could lead to enhanced health promotion and a higher quality of life.

Abstract
Vaccination, as a public health measure, offers effective protection of populations against infectious diseases. Optimising vaccination efficacy, particularly for higher-risk individuals, like the elderly whose immunocompromised state can prevent the development of robust vaccine responses, is vital. It is now clear that 24-hour circadian rhythms, which govern virtually all aspects of physiology, can generate oscillations in immunological responses. Consequently, vaccine efficacy may depend critically on the time of day of administration(s), including for Covid-19, current vaccines, and any future diseases or pandemics. Published clinical vaccine trials exploring diurnal immune variations suggest this approach could represent a powerful adjunct strategy for optimising immunisation, but important questions remain to be addressed. This review explores the latest insights into diurnal immune variation and the outcomes of circadian timing of vaccination or 'chronovaccination'.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate the changes in sustainable working life over 10-13 years of follow-up and the effect of baseline night work. Data from the Swedish national registers were used to define sustainable working life. Survey data in the 1998-2003 "SALT" with 34,680 twins or in the 2004-2006 "STAGE" with 19,637 twins were utilized to assess night work at baseline. Group-based trajectory and multinomial regression models were applied. The results of the SALT cohort yielded five trajectory solutions: stable sustainable working life (40%), stable lack of sustainable working life (25%), later decreasingly sustainable working life (15%), increasingly sustainable working life (14%), and early decreasingly sustainable working life (7%). In the STAGE cohort, four trajectories were detected: stable sustainable working life (83%), decreasingly sustainable working life (7%), stable lack of sustainable working life (5%), and increasing sustainable working life (5%). Night work was associated with the decreasing or increasing sustainable working life in the trajectory groups. To conclude, the largest parts of both cohorts followed trajectories of stable sustainable working lives. Night work was associated with both the trajectories of decreasing and increasing sustainable working lives.

Abstract
Exposure to light at night, pineal gland impairment, and the environmental pollutant trichloroethylene (TCE) have serious implications for health and contribute to illness, including liver cancer. The adverse effect of the association of continuous exposure to light with decreased melatonin levels and TCE-induced toxicity is not disclosed in target organs. This work explored the role of light and pineal impairment in increasing susceptibility to liver toxicity and cancer upon exposure to TCE. Male albino mice were divided into groups as follows: control group (12-h light/12-h dark cycle), constant light (24-h light), pinealectomized (Pnx) mice, sham surgically treated group, TCE-treated groups subjected to two doses (500 and 1000 mg/kg) at two different light regimens, and combination of Pnx and TCE-treated mice kept at a 12-h light/12-h dark cycle. Melatonin levels were significantly decreased in both Pnx mice and TCE-treated animals at both light regimens. Aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, activities, and serum bilirubin levels were significantly elevated, whereas albumin levels were markedly decreased in Pnx mice, TCE-treated mice, and the combination group. Histopathological investigations reflected changes in liver function parameters indicating liver injury and induction of cancer. These effects were accompanied by significant increase of the liver cancer biomarker alpha-fetoprotein and the expression of the metastatic markers CD44, TGFβ-1, and VEGF, along with increased oxidative stress indicators and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) in both Pnx and TCE-treated mice and the combination group at both light regimens. Taken together, our findings indicated that low melatonin levels, exposure to constant light, and the combination of both factors increases susceptibility to the toxic and carcinogenic effects of TCE on the liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blue-depleted light environments (BDLEs) may result in beneficial health outcomes for hospital inpatients in some cases. However, less is known about the effects on hospital staff working shifts. This study aimed to explore the effects of a BDLE compared with a standard hospital light environment (STLE) in a naturalistic setting on nurses' functioning during shifts and sleep patterns between shifts. METHODS Twenty-five nurses recruited from St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, Norway, completed 14 days of actigraphy recordings and self-reported assessments of sleep (e.g., total sleep time/sleep efficiency) and functioning while working shifts (e.g., mood, stress levels/caffeine use) in two different light environments. Additionally, participants were asked to complete several scales and questionnaires to assess the symptoms of medical conditions and mental health conditions and the side effects associated with each light environment. RESULTS A multilevel fixed-effects regression model showed a within-subject increase in subjective sleepiness (by 17%) during evening shifts in the BDLE compared with the STLE (p = .034; Cohen's d = 0.49) and an 0.2 increase in number of caffeinated beverages during nightshifts in the STLE compared with the BDLE (p = .027; Cohen's d = 0.37). There were no significant differences on any sleep measures (either based on sleep diary data or actigraphy recordings) nor on self-reported levels of stress or mood across the two conditions. Exploratory between-group analyses of questionnaire data showed that there were no significant differences except that nurses working in the BDLE reported perceiving the lighting as warmer (p = .009) and more relaxing (p = .023) than nurses working in the STLE. CONCLUSIONS Overall, there was little evidence that the change in the light environment had any negative impact on nurses' sleep and function, despite some indication of increased evening sleepiness in the BDLE. We recommend further investigations on this topic before BDLEs are implemented as standard solutions in healthcare institutions and propose specific suggestions for designing future large-scale trials and cohort studies. Abstract
Sleep is a nearly ubiquitous phenomenon across the phylogenetic tree, highlighting its essential role in ensuring fitness across evolutionary time. Consequently, chronic disruption of the duration, timing, or structure of sleep can cause widespread problems in multiple physiological systems, including those that regulate energy balance, immune function, and cognitive capacity, among others. Many, if not all these systems, become altered throughout the course of cancer initiation, growth, metastatic spread, treatment, and recurrence. Recent work has demonstrated how changes in sleep influence the development of chronic diseases, including cancer, in both humans and animal models. A common finding is that for some cancers (e.g., breast), chronic disruption of sleep/wake states prior to disease onset is associated with an increased risk for cancer development. Additionally, sleep disruption after cancer initiation is often associated with worse outcomes. Recently, evidence suggesting that cancer itself can affect neuronal circuits controlling sleep and wakefulness has accumulated. Patients with cancer often report difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and severe fatigue, during and even years after treatment. In addition to the psychological stress associated with cancer, cancer itself may alter sleep homeostasis through changes to host physiology and via currently undefined mechanisms. Moreover, cancer treatments (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal, and surgical) may further worsen sleep problems through complex biological processes yet to be fully understood. This results in a "chicken or the egg" phenomenon, where it is unclear whether sleep disruption promotes cancer or cancer reciprocally disrupts sleep. This review will discuss existing evidence for both hypotheses and present a framework through which the interactions between sleep and cancer can be dissociated and causally investigated.

Abstract
The cardiomyocyte circadian clock temporally governs fundamental cellular processes, leading to 24-h rhythms in cardiac properties (such as electrophysiology and contractility). The importance of this cell-autonomous clock is underscored by reports that the disruption of the mechanism leads to adverse cardiac remodeling and heart failure. In healthy non-stressed mice, the cardiomyocyte circadian clock modestly augments both cardiac protein synthesis (~14%) and mass (~11%) at the awake-to-sleep transition (relative to their lowest values in the middle of the awake period). However, the increased capacity for cardiac growth at the awake-to-sleep transition exacerbates the responsiveness of the heart to pro-hypertrophic stimuli/stresses (e.g., adrenergic stimulation, nutrients) at this time. The cardiomyocyte circadian clock orchestrates time-of-day-dependent rhythms in cardiac growth through numerous mechanisms. Both ribosomal RNA (e.g., 28S) and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6 signaling axis are circadian regulated, peaking at the awake-to-sleep transition in the heart. Conversely, the negative regulators of translation (including PER2, AMPK, and the integrated stress response) are elevated in the middle of the awake period in a coordinated fashion. We speculate that persistent circadian governance of cardiac growth during non-dipping/nocturnal hypertension, sleep apnea, and/or shift work may exacerbate left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac disease development, highlighting a need for the advancement of chronotherapeutic interventions.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between night shift work and breast cancer (BC) incidence. A search was performed in PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases before June 2021. The exposure factor of this study is night shift work, the primary outcome is the risk of BC. A total of 33 observational studies composed of 4,331,782 participants were included. Night shift work increases the risk of BC in the female population (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [Cl] = 1.10–1.31, p < 0.001), especially receptor-positive BC, including estrogen receptor (ER)+ BC (HR = 1.35, p < 0.001), progesterone receptor (PR)+ BC (HR = 1.30, p = 0.003), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)+ BC (HR = 1.42, p < 0.001), but has no effect on HER2− BC (HR = 1.10, p = 0.515) and ER−/PR− BC (HR = 0.98, p = 0.827). The risk of BC was positively correlated with night shift working duration, frequency, and cumulative times. For women who start night work before menopause, night work will increase the incidence of BC (HR = 1.17, p = 0.020), but for women who start night work after menopause, night work does not affect BC (HR = 1.04, p = 0.293). Night work can increase the incidence of BC in the female population. The effect of long working hours, frequency, and the cumulative number of night shifts on BC is influenced by menopausal status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent cancer in Iranian females. Due to the changes in lifestyle and reproductive risk factors, the BC incidence rate has been rapidly increasing. Knowing risk factors of BC could significantly contribute to improve preventive behaviors. To investigate the relationship between menstrual and reproductive factors and BC in Iranian female population. METHODS Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and SID as well as references of included studies were searched. Among relevant published observational studies, 27 studies met the inclusion criteria. Pooled risk estimates for the risk factors were determined using random-effects models due to the presence of substantial heterogeneity (P < 0.05). RESULTS All of the selected studies had case-control design. There was a positive relationship between maternal age at first pregnancy and risk of BC (OR = 1.79 95% CI: 1.36-2.35). Also, menopausal status was associated with higher risk of BC (OR = 1.60 95% CI: 1.18-2.17), whereas, there was no association between menarche age and increased risk of BC (OR = 0.55 95% CI: 0.29-1.03). History of abortion (OR = 1.21 95% CI: 0.97-1.5), nulliparity (OR = 1.43 95% CI: 0.89-2.31), and breastfeeding history (OR = 0.68 95% CI: 0.42-1.09) were not associated with BC risk. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that age at the first pregnancy and menopausal status were significantly associated with BC risk among Iranian women, whereas menarche age, nulliparity, and history of breastfeeding were not. In regard to the history of abortion, our findings revealed no association with BC, but in high-quality studies, this relationship was significant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined the association between night shift work and risk of breast cancer, overall and by hormone receptor subtype, among females in the Norwegian Offshore Petroleum Workers (NOPW) cohort. We also examined the association of coexposure (chlorinated degreasers and benzene) and breast cancer risk, and possible interaction with work schedule. DESIGN Prospectively recruited case-cohort study within the NOPW cohort. SETTING Female offshore petroleum workers active on the Norwegian continental shelf. PARTICIPANTS 600 female workers (86 cases and 514 non-cases) were included in the study. We excluded workers that died or emigrated before start of follow-up, had missing work history, were diagnosed with breast cancer or other prior malignancy (except non-melanoma skin cancer) before start of follow-up. RESULTS No overall association was found between breast cancer risk and work schedule (HR 0.87, 95% CI 0.52 to 1.46 for work schedule involving night shift vs day shift only). There was no significant association between work schedule and risk of any breast cancer subtype. No significant interactions were found between work schedule and chemical coexposures (breast cancer overall Pinteraction chlorinated degreasers=0.725 and Pinteraction benzene=0.175). CONCLUSIONS Our results did not provide supporting evidence that work schedule involving night shift affects breast cancer risk in female offshore petroleum workers, but should be considered cautiously due to few cases. Further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Recent studies suggest that organic solvent exposure could be closely related to breast cancer, although the evidence remains controversial. Thus, we evaluated existing epidemiological evidence for the association between occupational solvent exposure and breast cancer. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched to identify published case-control and cohort studies that addressed occupational exposure to organic solvents and breast cancer, up to April, 2021. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were conducted to obtain the pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) on the incidence of breast cancer in relation to occupational exposure. The pooled OR of breast cancer among workers exposed to organic solvents overall was 1.18 (95%CI, 1.11 ~ 1.25; I2 = 76.3%; 24 studies), compared to those with no exposure. After stratification by menopause and study location, it was revealed that the association between occupational exposure to organic solvents and the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.09 ~ 1.67; I2 = 73.4%; 7 studies) was significant, and there was also a clear association in workers in Europe (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.12 ~ 1.32; I2 = 82.9%; 13 studies). We observed a significant association between occupational exposure to organic solvents and breast cancer in both cohort and case-control studies.

Abstract
The various non-standard schedules required of shift workers force abrupt changes in the timing of sleep and light-dark exposure. These changes result in disturbances of the endogenous circadian system and its misalignment with the environment. Simulated night-shift experiments and field-based studies with shift workers both indicate that the circadian system is resistant to adaptation from a day- to a night-oriented schedule, as determined by a lack of substantial phase shifts over multiple days in centrally controlled rhythms, such as those of melatonin and cortisol. There is evidence that disruption of the circadian system caused by night-shift work results not only in a misalignment between the circadian system and the external light-dark cycle, but also in a state of internal desynchronization between various levels of the circadian system. This is the case between rhythms controlled by the central circadian pacemaker and clock genes expression in tissues such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells, hair follicle cells, and oral mucosa cells. The disruptive effects of atypical work schedules extend beyond the expression profile of canonical circadian clock genes and affects other transcripts of the human genome. In general, after several days of living at night, most rhythmic transcripts in the human genome remain adjusted to a day-oriented schedule, with dampened group amplitudes. In contrast to circadian clock genes and rhythmic transcripts, metabolomics studies revealed that most metabolites shift by several hours when working nights, thus leading to their misalignment with the circadian system. Altogether, these circadian and sleep-wake disturbances emphasize the all-encompassing impact of night-shift work, and can contribute to the increased risk of various medical conditions. Here, we review the latest scientific evidence regarding the effects of atypical work schedules on the circadian system, sleep and alertness of shift-working populations, and discuss their potential clinical impacts.

Abstract
There is much less research on the relationship between shift work and positive states experienced in the workplace, e.g., emotions and work ability. Using the job demands-resources model, conservation of resources theory and the broaden-and-build theory as theoretical frameworks, the direct and indirect (mediated via positive and negative emotions) relations between the complex of job resources and work ability were tested in the group of shift and non-shift workers. Three types of resources related to task, leadership and interpersonal relations were taken into account. Data were collected among 1510 workers. Structural equation modelling (SEM) showed that only leadership was directly related to high work ability in both occupational groups. Indirect effects of positive and negative emotions were strongly supported. Both of them mediate the effects of the three analysed job resources on work ability, but individual job resources impacted were different. Leadership resources led to "good" work ability by the intensification of positive and reduction of negative emotions. Interpersonal resources decrease negative emotions. Task resources, conversely, intensified positive emotions, which in turn increased work ability. These research results shed more light on the ways of shaping work ability among shift and non-shift workers.
