Abstract
Pulsed-spray pharmacomechanical thrombolysis was used to treat 41 patients with 47 complete thrombotic occlusions of hemodialysis grafts (n = 29), arterial bypass grafts (n = 10), or peripheral native arteries (n = 8). The procedure involves the use of small pulses of highly concentrated urokinase, which are forcefully sprayed throughout the thrombus during systemic heparinization. Virtually complete lysis was achieved in 46 of 47 occlusions. In the 46 thrombi that lysed, mean time for completion of lysis was 63 +/- 35 min and initial partial return of flow required 26 +/- 18 min. Complications included small peripheral emboli in one treated bypass graft (which cleared promptly after further pulse-spray therapy) and bleeding in three cases (one case of hematoma in the infused field at the site of recent surgery, one case of bilateral hematomas at the femoral puncture site, and one minor delayed self-limited gastrointestinal hemorrhage). Results to date suggest that the pulsed-spray pharmacomechanical method augments the speed, consistency, safety, and cost efficacy of clinical thrombolysis. Further study is warranted.

Abstract
We propose an implementation of the nonperturbative renormalization group (NPRG) which applies to lattice models. Contrary to the usual NPRG approach where the initial condition of the RG flow is the mean-field solution, the lattice NPRG uses the (local) limit of decoupled sites as the (initial) reference system. In the long-distance limit, it is equivalent to the usual NPRG formulation and therefore yields identical results for the critical properties. We discuss both a lattice field theory defined on a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice and classical spin models. The simplest approximation, the local potential approximation, is sufficient to obtain the critical temperature and the magnetization of the three-dimensional Ising, XY, and Heisenberg models to an accuracy on the order of 1%. We show how the local potential approximation can be improved to include a nonzero anomalous dimension η and discuss the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of the two-dimensional XY model on a square lattice.

Abstract
Angiographic evaluation of impotent men revealed a frequent association between penile arterial disease and veno-occlusive insufficiency of the corpora cavernosa. In order to evaluate a possible cause-and-effect relationship, we investigated the competence of the cavernosal veno-occlusive mechanism in a canine model at various intervals after onset of cavernosal ischemia. In most dogs, the veno-occlusive mechanism could no longer be activated by papaverine after about 30 minutes of ischemia. If ischemia was relieved shortly thereafter, veno-occlusive competence returned after a further delay of one or two hours. The evidence suggests that veno-occlusive failure is not simply a hemodynamic consequence of loss of arterial inflow, but instead secondary to some ischemic injury. We conclude that arterial insufficiency may be one of the causes of cavernosal veno-occlusive insufficiency in humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to track the toxic ions released by MTA Fillapex, BioRoot RCS, and an experimental tricalcium silicate-based sealer (CEO) into local and distant tissues as well as to investigate their potential adverse effects. In addition, the chemical constituents of the sealers were also evaluated. The main components of the dry powders, pastes, and mixed sealers were characterized. MATERIAL AND METHODS Dry powder and sealer discs were each set for 72 h and their main components were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealers were used to measure silicon and calcium ions. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealers or empty tubes were implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of Wistar rats. On days 7, 15, 30, and 45, the animals were euthanized and their brains, livers, kidneys, and subcutaneous tissues were removed and processed to determine the concentrations of chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, iron, magnesium and nickel using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. RESULTS The main compounds in all sealers were carbon, oxygen, silicon, and calcium. MTA Fillapex release more Si while highest levels of Si were found in presence of BioRoot. The release of Si and Ca ions promoted by MTA Fillapex raise by time. No traces of cobalt, chromium, or magnesium were detected in any tissue. Irrespective of the sealer, no traces of copper and lead were found in the subcutaneous tissue; however, they were observed in the organs. The highest concentration of iron was identified in the liver. All sealers exhibited similar nickel traces in the brain, kidney, and liver except for MTA Fillapex, which demonstrated levels higher than CEO in the subcutaneous tissue on day 7. Tracing nickel ions over time revealed that lowest concentrations were found in subcutaneous tissue. CONCLUSION Taken together, our data demonstrate that CEOs have chemical compositions similar to those of other commercial sealers. Furthermore, none of them exhibited a threat to systemic health. Moreover, the minimal amounts of iron and nickel detected were not related to the sealers.

Abstract
Methods have been developed that permit repetitive radiographic measurement of the lumbar intervertebral disc space in a rostral-caudal direction (width) in the anesthetized laboratory rabbit. Using isolated control discs and injured discs in which narrowing has been induced for chronic and acute periods, the widths of the lumbar intervertebral disc spaces determined ratio-graphically correlate with widths determined histologically (p less than 0.000, r = 0.75). Both an increase (widening) and a decrease (narrowing) in disc width were observed using radiography after different experimental treatments. Anesthesia and lower-body paralysis (an experimentally induced inability to bear weight on and to perceive a pinch stimulus in hind limbs) caused widening of the discs: anesthesia causing a general widening throughout the lumbar spine and lower-body paralysis causing a specific widening low in the lumbar spine. Both disc injection and piercing the disc with needles to recover nucleus pulposus material caused narrowing of the discs. Acridine-orange injection induced a narrowing accompanied by osteophytosis. Experimentally induced narrowing at L4-5 (the result of injury to the disc) resulted in narrowing also at L2-3. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that in vivo disc-width size in the young rabbit depends on both the quantity of nucleus pulposus material and the force-generating activities of the adjacent spinal muscles, and that disc injury at one level stimulates narrowing at other levels.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate in vitro and in vivo the influence of hyperglycemic condition on biocompatibility and biomineralization of gray mineral trioxide aggregate (GMTA) and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). For the in vitro study, fibroblast-like cells L929 were cultured under high or normal glucose concentration to investigate the effects of both MTA's on cell proliferation and inflammatory cytokines production IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. For the in vivo study, polyethylene tubes containing MTA materials and empty tubes were implanted into dorsal connective tissues of Wistar rats previously assigned normal and hyperglycemic. After 7 and 30 days, the tubes with surrounding tissues were removed and subjected to histological, fluorescence and immunohistochemical analyzes of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. In vitro study showed that, under high glucose condition, GMTA reduced cell proliferation and IL-6 production compared with WMTA. Moreover, in vivo study revealed that hyperglycemic condition did not modify the inflammatory response and cytokines production in the tissue close to both materials. Independently of hyperglycemic status, mineralized areas were observed with both materials, but the fluorescence intensity of WMTA was diminished on 14 days in hyperglycemic animals. It is possible to conclude that GMTA was able to inhibit the proliferation rate and IL-6 production under high glucose concentration in vitro. Furthermore, cytokines production and inflammatory response were not upregulated in hyperglycemic animals; however, a decrease in the calcium deposition was observed in presence of WMTA, suggesting a delay in the mineralization process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), mental symptoms (mood, anxiety disorders and distress) by sex. METHODS This a cross-sectional study performed in working-age adults from a Health Promotion Center (primary care) in São Paulo, Brazil. Self-reported mental symptoms from rating scales (21-item Beck Anxiety Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and K6 distress scale) were evaluated by hepatic steatosis (NAFLD and ALD). Logistic regression models estimated the association between hepatic steatosis subtypes and mental symptoms by Odds ratios (OR) adjusted by confounders in the total sample and sex stratified. RESULTS Among 7241 participants (70.5% men, median age: 45 years), the frequency of steatosis was of 30.7% (25.1% NAFLD), being higher in men than women (70.5% vs. 29.5%, p < 0.0001), regardless of the steatosis subtype. Metabolic risk factors were similar in both subtypes of steatosis, but not mental symptoms. Overall, NAFLD was inversely associated with anxiety (OR = 0.75, 95%CI 0.63-0.90) and positively associated with depression (OR = 1.17, 95%CI 1.00-1.38). On the other hand, ALD was positively associated with anxiety (OR = 1.51; 95%CI 1.15-2.00). In sex-stratified analyses, only men presented an association of anxiety symptoms with NAFLD (OR = 0.73; 95%CI 0.60-0.89) and ALD (OR = 1.60; 95%CI 1.18-2.16). CONCLUSIONS The complex association between different types of steatosis (NAFLD and ALD), mood and anxiety disorders indicates the need for a deeper understanding of their common causal pathways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neck circumference (NC) is a straightforward method for quantifying upper body adiposity without the limitations that other indices can have. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between NC, overall (body mass index [BMI]) and central obesity (waist circumference [WC]), and percentage of body fat (BF%) in men and women. METHODS The associations with NC quartiles (first quartile: reference group), BMI ≥30 kg/m2, WC (>102 cm for men and >88 cm for women), and high BF% (≥21 for men and ≥29 for women) were compared and analyzed by logistic regression models adjusted for demographic characteristics, cardiovascular risk factors, and lean mass. RESULTS In 4283 adults (mean age: 44 y, 71.8% of men), the mean NC was higher in men (40.5 cm, range: 32-55 cm) than women (34.5 cm, range: 28.5-46 cm). Among men, the fourth quartile of NC (42.5-55 cm) was positively associated with obesity (multivariable odds ratio [OR]: 2.28, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1-4.48). Among women, the fourth quartile of NC (36.5-46 cm) was associated with increased WC (multivariable OR: 2.98; 95% CI: 1.59-5.60). Progressive increases in the ORs were noticed across the associations between NC quartiles (second to fourth) and high BF% in men and women. The highest ORs were observed for the associations between high BF% and the fourth quartiles of NC in men (multivariable OR: 2.42; 95% CI: 1.49-3.93) and in women (multivariable OR: 29.19; 95% CI: 14.01-60.84). CONCLUSIONS The utility of NC as a measurement of obesity in clinical practice was demonstrated in this large sample of young to middle-aged adults. The highest NC values were positively associated with overall obesity in men and central obesity in women. Moreover, NC was closely associated with high BF% in both sexes, particularly in women.

Abstract
Calcium silicate-based sealers are bioactive materials that release ions when in contact with body fluids. Therefore, this study aims mapping/trace bone formation markers released by MTA Fillapex, BioRoot RCS, and experimental tricalcium silicate-based sealer (CEO) into subcutaneous tissues, bloodstream and body organs. Toward, polyethylene tubes filled with sealers were implanted into connective tissue of Wistar rats. On days 7, 15, 30, and 45 after implantation, blood samples were collected to measure calcium (Ca2+), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels. Thereafter, the animals were killed, and the brain, liver, kidneys, and subcutaneous tissue were removed and processed to determine the concentrations of Ca2+ and P by ICP-OES. Similar Ca2+ levels were observed in subcutaneous tissue for all groups, although, at 45 days, it was identified a reduction in Ca2+ serum levels of CEO compared to those two other sealers and an increase in Ca2+ levels in the liver compared to those released by MTA Fillapex. In contrast, no trace of P was detected in any tissue; moreover, plasma P and ALP serum levels of MTA Fillapex were higher at day 30. Our findings showed that Ca2+ were identified in local tissues, bloodstream, and organs from all sealers. The up-regulation of bone marker levels promoted by sealers can modify body homeostasis and induce tissue damage. Besides, MTA Fillapex was associated with a raise of bone marker levels, suggesting a possible systemic effect. The sealer composition can affect not only the local repair process but also the systemic health.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial and biological properties of Ambroxol associated with glycerin (GLI), propylene glycol (PG), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a possible vehicle for an experimental tricalcium silicate sealer, with the intention of developing a new biomaterial. Mouse undifferentiated dental pulp cells (OD-21) were cultured, and the effects of different association on cell proliferation and inflammatory cytokine production were investigated. Antimicrobial adhesion of Enterococcus faecalis to setting sealers at 2 h was evaluated. Polyethylene tubes containing experimental sealers and empty tubes were implanted into dorsal connective tissues of 12 male 3- to 4-months-old Wistar rats (250-280 g). After 7 and 30 days, the tubes were removed and processed for histological and immunohistochemical analyses. ANOVA followed by Bonferroni correction and ANOVA followed by Tukey test was used for parametric data and Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn for nonparametric (p < 0.05). Cell proliferation was dose-dependent, since all association were cytotoxic at higher concentrations; however, Ambroxol-PEG showed significantly higher cytotoxicity than other association (p < 0.05). In addition, irrespective of the association, no cytokine production was observed in vitro. Ambroxol-GLI reduced bacterial viability, whereas Ambroxol-PEG increased (p < 0.05). Histological examination showed no significant difference in the inflammatory response (p > 0.05) and mineralization ability in all association. Additionally, IL-1β and TNF-α were upregulated on Ambroxol-PEG in relation to Control at 07 days (p < 0.05). Ambroxol-GLI was the best vehicle for experimental tricalcium silicate sealer, as it promoted an increase in antimicrobial activity without altering the inflammatory response or mineralization ability.

Abstract
This research evaluated, in vivo, the accuracy of three electronic apex locators - EALs (Root ZXII, E-PEX and FIND) in teeth with vital pulp submitted to biopulpectomy, preserving the periodontal stump. For this study, 90 single-rooted teeth with extraction indication were selected. After positive pulpal cold sensitivity test, pulp chamber access was performed. The cervical and middle thirds of root canals were instrumented with Reciproc R25, and the K#15 file was used as a standard instrument to determine working length, forming 2 groups: Constriction (insertion of the instrument until the apical constriction limit) and Foramen (insertion of the instrument until the foramen and then repositioning at constriction, without removing the file from the canal). The hand file was stabilized with a light-cured flow resin. After extraction, the samples were analyzed through microCT SkyScan 1272, with CTAN software, which evaluated the proximity between the tip of the file to the apical constriction, providing data for comparative analysis using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (p<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the abilities of the EALs to detect the apical constriction after reaching the foramen with Root ZX II showing higher accuracy (89%). However, there was no difference in the accuracy of the three EALs in detecting the apical constriction without reaching the foramen. Based on the present results, we conclude that EALs may show accurate measures in detecting apical constriction and foramen, even without damaging the periodontal stump in biopulpectomy.

Abstract
Methods were developed for measuring the width of lumbar intervertebral discs in Sprague-Dawley rats. Rates of growth of the L4-5 and L5-6 discs in a rostral-caudal direction in an approximately midsagittal plane were reported from analysis of radiographic and histologic data. The radiographic data correlated with histologic data (p less than 0.001). It was concluded that the L4-5 and L5-6 intervertebral discs continue to increase in size throughout the first 18 months of life of the rat, well past the age of rapid gain in body weight.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to define a model of volleyball drills’ structure. A set of parameters has been designed and tested for: i) pertinence and accuracy; ii) criteria reliability; iii) practical application. Expert judges evaluated model’s pertinence, accuracy and criteria reliability. A sample of 50 drills was assessed for drills’ analysis. The model demonstrated pertinence and accuracy, with complete agreement among experts. Criteria were reliable (Kappa test results > 0.8). Analysis indicated significant differences in the frequency of model’s parameters (graph topology), for instance among attributes (basic complex - 30%) with manifold drills (46,7%) in the technical domain (100%). The model contributes with theoretical support for a coach’s key task of designing practice contents.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical and biological properties of an experimental tricalcium silicate-based repair cement containing diclofenac sodium (CERD). For the physicochemical test, MTA, Biodentine and CERD were mixed and cement disc were prepared to evaluate the setting time and radiopacity. Root-end cavity were performed in acrylic teeth and filled with cements to analyze the solubility up to 7 days. Polyethylene tubes containing cements were prepared and calcium ions and pH were measured at 3h, 24h, 72h and 15 days. For the biological test, SAOS-2 were cultivated, exposed to cements extracts and cell proliferation were investigated by MTT assay at 6h, 24h and 48h. Polyethylene tubes containing cements were implanted into Wistar rats. After 7 and 30 days, the tubes were removed and processed for histological analyses. Parametric and nonparametric data were performed. No difference was identified in relation to setting time, radiopacity and solubility. Biodentine released more calcium ion than MTA and CERD; however, no difference between MTA and CERD were detected. Alkaline pH was observed for all cements and Biodentine exhibited highest pH. All cements promoted a raise on cell proliferation at 24h and 48h, except CERD at 48h. Biodentine stimulated cell metabolism in relation to MTA and CERD while CERD was more cytotoxic than MTA at 48h. Besides, no difference on both inflammatory response and mineralization ability for all cement were found. CERD demonstrated similar proprieties to others endodontic cements available.

Abstract
An in vivo method has been developed for quantifying cavernosal endothelium-dependent relaxation. The method is based on the fact that relaxation of the smooth muscle around the sinusoids of the penile corpora cavernosa activates the erectile veno-occlusive mechanism, and the degree of veno-occlusion can be precisely quantified by the pharmacologic maintenance erectile flow (PMEF) method. Pharmacologic maintenance erectile flows are determined after intracavernosal infusion of the endothelium-dependent relaxant acetylcholine (ACh) and the endothelium-independent relaxant papaverine, and expressed as an acetylcholine/papaverine ratio (APR). Control rabbits showed no changes from the test procedures themselves. In 12 test rabbits, control PMEFs after approximately 10(-7) mol ACh or papaverine averaged 0.7 and 0.5 ml/minute, respectively; APR averaged 1.3. Endothelial injury of the corpus cavernosum was produced by intracavernosal injection of 100 micrograms (16 x 10(-8) mol) of the detergent CHAPS or 1 ml of Renografin-76. Within 1 hour of injection of either agent, PMEF(ACh) increased markedly to approximately 6, PMEF(pap) increased minimally to approximately 0.9, and APR increased to about 7. These values gradually decreased to normal limits at six weeks. Endothelial injury and recovery were confirmed by electron microscopy. Thus, reduced cavernosal response to ACh relative to papaverine was indicative of endothelial injury. The ACh/papaverine response ratio offers promise as a practical and reliable in vivo method for quantifying endothelial-dependent relaxation.
