Abstract
A study of structural chromosome aberration frequencies in blood lymphocytes was performed in a group of 20 oil catalytic cracking unit workers and in 26 subjects belonging to the office staff of an oil refining plant, as well as in 35 matched controls. Subjects in the latter group were of the same sex (males) and similar age as the exposed group, and had similar smoking habits. Benzo[a]pyrene levels in workplace air samples were also determined. The cytogenetic analysis failed to show any differences between the exposed and control groups. A slight increase in benzo[a]pyrene level above the Cuban national standard of 1 ng/m3 was found during the air sample analysis in the oil catalytic cracking unit.

Abstract
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are key elements in orchestrating host responses inside tumor stroma. This population may undergo a polarized activation process, thus rendering a heterogeneous spectrum of phenotypes, where the classically activated type 1 macrophages (M1) and the alternative activated type 2 macrophages (M2) represent two extreme phenotypes. In this commentary, based on very recent research findings, we intend to highlight how complex could be the crosstalk among all components of tumor stroma, where the coexistence of non-natural partners may even skew the canonical responses that we can expect.

Abstract
Compelling evidence derived from clinical and experimental research has demonstrated the crucial contribution of chronic inflammation in the development of neoplasms, including gallbladder cancer. In this regard, data derived from clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that the receptor of advanced glycation end-products (RAGE)/AGEs axis plays an important role in the onset of a crucial and long-lasting inflammatory milieu, thus supporting tumor growth and development. AGEs are formed in biological systems or foods, and food-derived AGEs, also known as dietary AGEs are known to contribute to the systemic pool of AGEs. Once they bind to RAGE, the activation of multiple and crucial signaling pathways are triggered, thus favoring the secretion of several proinflammatory cytokines also involved in the promotion of gallbladder cancer invasion and migration. In the present review, we aimed to highlight the relevance of the association between high dietary AGEs intakes and high risk for gallbladder cancer, and emerging data supporting that dietary intervention to reduce gallbladder cancer risk is a very attractive approach that deserves much more research efforts.

Abstract
Compelling pieces of evidence derived from both clinical and experimental research has demonstrated the crucial contribution of diabetes mellitus (DM) as a risk factor associated with increased cancer incidence and mortality in many human neoplasms, including gastric cancer (GC). DM is considered a systemic inflammatory disease and therefore, this inflammatory status may have profound effects on the tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly by driving many molecular mechanisms to generate a more aggressive TME. DM is an active driver in the modification of the behavior of many cell components of the TME as well as altering the mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM), leading to an increased ECM stiffening. Additionally, DM can alter many cellular signaling mechanisms and thus favoring tumor growth, invasion, and metastatic potential, as well as key elements in regulating cellular functions and cross-talks, such as the microRNAs network, the production, and cargo of exosomes, the metabolism of cell stroma and resistance to hypoxia. In the present review, we intend to highlight the mechanistic contributions of DM to the remodeling of TME in GC.

Abstract
The tumor angiogenesis process is believed to be dependent on an "angiogenic switch" formed by a cascade of biologic events as a consequence of the "cross-talk" between tumor cells and several components of local microenvironment including endothelial cells, macrophages, mast cells and stromal components. Oxidative stress represents an important stimulus that widely contributes to this angiogenic switch, which is particularly relevant in lungs, where oxidative stress is originated from different sources including the incomplete reduction of oxygen during respiration, exposure to hypoxia/reoxygenation, stimulated resident or chemoattracted immune cells to lung tissues, as well as by a variety of chemicals compounds. In the present review we highlight the role of oxidative stress in tumor angiogenesis as a key signal linked to other relevant actors in this complex process.

Abstract
Any new report on the anticancer properties of natural products always awakens new satisfaction and hope about the role of the international scientific community in its continuous contributions to human health, particularly when those reports contribute to both the understanding and therapeutics of cancer. For many decades, natural products have been pivotal in drug discovery programs because they offer a diverse array of anticancer therapeutic possibilities. Recently, two manuscripts published in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology added new data to the already extensive body of anticancer preclinical evidence for resveratrol and senegenin, two compounds widely present in herbal preparations used in traditional Chinese medicine. The first one, with comprehensive and recognized anticancer properties, and the second one, shows a compelling body of evidence supporting its neuroprotective effects, but with emerging anticancer activities. Natural products have become key elements in the expanding and dynamic field of anticancer drug discovery. However, urgent and collective efforts are still needed to bridge the gap between preclinical and clinical research and thus bring new anticancer therapeutic breakthroughs.

Abstract
Compelling pieces of epidemiological, clinical, and experimental research have demonstrated that Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor associated with increased cancer incidence and mortality in many human neoplasms. In the pathophysiology context of DM, many of the main classical actors are relevant elements that can fuel the different steps of the carcinogenesis process. Hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, metabolic inflammation, and dyslipidemia are among the classic contributors to this association. Furthermore, new emerging actors have received particular attention in the last few years, and compelling data support that the microbiome, the epigenetic changes, the reticulum endoplasmic stress, and the increased glycolytic influx also play important roles in promoting the development of many cancer types. The arsenal of glucose-lowering therapeutic agents used for treating diabetes is wide and diverse, and a growing body of data raised during the last two decades has tried to clarify the contribution of therapeutic agents to this association. However, this research area remains controversial, because some anti-diabetic drugs are now considered as either promotors or protecting elements. In the present review, we intend to highlight the compelling epidemiological shreds of evidence that support this association, as well as the mechanistic contributions of many of these potential pathological mechanisms, some controversial points as well as future challenges.

Abstract
Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori-related diseases varies geographically and it is partially determined by the virulence of the circulating strains. Cuba and Chile exhibit different gastric cancer rates, on despite of very similar H. pylori infection rates. We determined if differences in the pathogenic potential of H. pylori isolates from Chile and Cuba could explain the disease outcome in each population.
Methods: H. pylori isolates from 78 Chilean and 71 Cuban patients were analyzed using PCR for the presence of cagA, babA2, vacA alleles and the pattern of EPIYA motifs. Results: cagA was detected in 94.9 % of Chilean and 64.7 % of Cuban isolates (P < 0.001) and was significantly associated with duodenal ulcer (DU) in Cuba (P < 0.01) but not in Chile. The presence of cagA with multiple EPIYA-C motifs was 18.2 % higher in Chile than in Cuba (P < 0.05). Also, an association was observed between GU (P ≤ 0.05) and premalignant lesions (P < 0.001) with the multiple EPIYA-C motif status of the strains in Chile, but not in Cuba. The prevalence of vacA s2m2 genotype was predominant in Chile (66.7 %), while in Cuba was prevalent the s1m1 genotype (56.8 %); and the last one was significantly associated with the presence of DU in Cuban patients.
Conclusions: The cagA status and the EPIYA pattern found in Chilean and Cuban H. pylori clinical isolates partially explain the differences in disease prevalence between both countries. The high proportion of vacA s2m2 genotype in Chile was an unexpected result, needing further studies.
