Abstract
The aim of the study was to detect the expression level of thymosin β4 (Tβ4) in serum and tissues of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) combined nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The effects of Tβ4 in hepatic steatosis, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis development in CHB combined NAFLD patients were also discussed. The study included 46 patients in the case group with CHB and NAFLD and 42 patients in the control group with CHB. ELISA was applied to detect serum Tβ4 and TNF-α level. Furthermore, the correlation analysis of Tβ4 levels with biochemical index, pathological index, and TNF-α level was performed. The Tβ4 immunohistochemical levels of different inflammation fibrosis levels were compared, and the correlation analysis with TNF expression was performed. The Tβ4 levels in patients with CHB combined NAFLD showed no statistical difference when compared to the control group. In patients with CHB combined NAFLD group, the Tβ4 level had no correlation with ALT, AST, TG, FGP, hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA levels, and fat grading, but had negative correlation with inflammation score and fibrosis score (P <0.01). The immunohistochemical results of hepatic tissues showed that the expression intensity of severe inflammation fibrosis group had statistical significance compared with that of slight group, and the Tβ4 expression both in serum and in liver tissue negatively correlated with TNF-α expression. Tβ4 could be involved in the regulation of chronic inflammation and fibrosis and plays a defense role in the disease progression of CHB combined NAFLD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common and malignant tumors with an insidious onset, difficult early diagnosis, and limited therapy options, resulting in a poor prognosis. Cell division cycle associated 2 (CDCA2), also known as Repo-Man, plays an important role in regulating mitosis and DNA repair, but the involvement of CDCA2 in HCC remains unclear. METHODS The differentially expressed genes that were significantly upregulated in multiple RNA sequencing datasets of HCC were screened. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to identify diagnostic markers for HCC. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox regression analysis was performed to screen the prognosis-related genes. The screening and analyses identified CDCA2 as the target gene in this study. The expression of CDCA2 was analyzed in public databases and clinical specimens, and CDCA2 involvement in HCC was explored by both bioinformatic analysis and in vitro experiments. RESULTS The level of CDCA2 was enhanced in HCC compared with healthy livers. Overexpression of CDCA2 positively correlated with the pathological grade and TNM stage of the diseases. Furthermore, CDCA2 was found to be an independent prognostic predictor. An excellent prognostic model of HCC was successfully constructed with CDCA2 in combination with TNM stage. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that CDCA2 was closely associated with the cell cycle, apoptosis, and p53 signaling pathway. Silencing CDCA2 in Huh7 cells resulted in significant upregulation of p53 and the downstream PUMA and NOXA and a subsequently increased apoptosis. Inhibition of p53 signaling and apoptosis was found after overexpression of CDCA2 in L02 cells. Strikingly, the proliferation of cells was not affected by CDCA2. CONCLUSIONS CDCA2 was a novel diagnostic marker for HCC, and overexpression of this gene reflected poor pathological grade, stage, and clinical prognosis. CDCA2 promoted the pathogenesis of HCC by suppressing the p53-PUMA/NOXA signaling and the subsequent apoptosis.

Abstract
Chemokines and their receptors have been proposed to play important roles in tumor progression and metastasis. To investigate their roles in the progression of primary and metastatic malignant liver tumors and their prognosis, we compared expression profiles of CXCL12/CXCR4, CCL20/CCR6, and CCL21/CCR7 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the expression levels of the chemokine/chemokine receptor pairs in 29 HCC and 11 CRLM specimens and adjacent non-cancerous tissues, and correlations with clinicopathological variables and overall survival were determined. CCL20/CCR6 expression was higher in HCC than in adjacent non-cancerous tissues. High CCR6 expression in HCC was negatively associated with 5-year survival rate and was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival of HCC patients, whereas differences were not observed between CRLM and adjacent tissues. Furthermore, significantly higher expression of CCL21/CCR7 was found in CRLM than in HCC. In summary, the CCL20/CCR6 axis was elevated in HCC but not in CRLM, whereas the CCL21/CCR7 axis was elevated in CRLM but not in HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human induced pluripotent stem cells, which can be differentiated into hepatocyte-like cells, could provide a source for liver regeneration and bio-artificial liver devices. However, the functionality of hepatocyte-like cells is significantly lower than that of primary hepatocytes. AIMS To investigate whether serum from patients undergoing hepatectomy might promote differentiation from human induced pluripotent stem cells to hepatocyte-like cells. METHODS Serum from patients undergoing hepatectomy (acquired pre-hepatectomy and 3 hours, 1 day and 3 days post-hepatectomy) was used to replace foetal bovine serum when differentiating human induced pluripotent stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells. Properties of hepatocyte-like cells were assessed and compared with cells cultured in foetal bovine serum. RESULTS The differentiation efficiency and functionality of hepatocyte-like cells cultured in human serum 3 hours and 1 day post-hepatectomy were superior to those cultured in foetal bovine serum and human serum pre-hepatectomy. Human serum 3 days post-hepatectomy had an equal effect to that of human serum pre-hepatectomy. Some cytochrome P450 isozyme transcript levels of hepatocyte-like cells cultured in human serum were higher than those cultured in foetal bovine serum. CONCLUSION Human serum, particularly that acquired relatively soon after hepatectomy, can enhance the differentiation efficiency and functionality of hepatocyte-like cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Abstract
This study has analyzed the gene expression patterns of an IPMN microarray dataset including normal pancreatic ductal tissue (NT), intraductal papillary mucinous adenoma (IPMA), intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma (IPMC), and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) samples. And eight clusters of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with similar expression pattern were detected by k-means clustering. Then a survey map of functional disorder in IPMN progression was established by functional enrichment analysis of these clusters. In addition, transcription factors (TFs) enrichment analysis was used to detect the key TFs in each cluster of DEGs, and three TFs (FLI1, ERG, and ESR1) were found to significantly regulate DEGs in cluster 1, and expression of these three TFs was validated by qRT-PCR. All these results indicated that these three TFs might play key roles in the early stages of IPMN progression.

Abstract
Sex as a physiologic factor has a strong association with the features of metabolic syndrome. Our previous study showed that loss of the voltage-gated proton channel Hv1 inhibits insulin secretion and leads to hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance in male mice. However, there are significant differences in blood glucose between male and female Hv1-knockout (KO) mice. Here, we investigated the differences in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity between male and female KO mice and how sex steroids contribute to these differences. We found that the fasting blood glucose in female KO mice was visibly lower than that in male KO mice, which was accompanied by hypotestosteronemia. KO mice in both sexes exhibited higher expression of gluconeogenesis-related genes in liver compared with WT mice. Also, the livers from KO males displayed a decrease in glycolysis-related gene expression and an increase in gluconeogenesis-related gene expression compared with KO females. Furthermore, exogenous testosterone supplementation decreased blood glucose levels in male KO mice, as well as enhancing insulin signaling. Taken together, our data demonstrate that knockout of Hv1 results in higher blood glucose levels in male than female mice, despite a decreased insulin secretion in both sexes. This sex-related difference in glucose homeostasis is associated with the glucose metabolism in liver tissue, likely due to the physiological levels of testosterone in KO male mice.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the most lethal malignancies with high aggressive and poor prognosis. Until now, the five-year survival rate has not been improved which brings serious challenge to human health. Lung cancer stem cells (LCSCs) serve as the root of cancer occurrence, progression, recurrence, and drug resistance. Therefore, effective anti-cancer agents and molecular mechanisms which could specifically eliminate LCSCs are urgently needed for drug design. In this article, we discovered Olig2 was overexpressed in clinical lung cancer tissues and acted as a transcription factor to regulate cancer stemness by regulating CD133 gene transcription. The results suggested Olig2 could be a promising target in anti-LCSCs therapy and new drugs targeted Olig2 may exhibit excellent clinical results. Furthermore, we verified ACT001, a guaianolide sesquiterpene lactone in phase II clinical trial with excellent glioma remission, inhibited cancer stemness by directly binding to Olig2 protein, inducing Olig2 ubiquitination degradation and inhibiting CD133 gene transcription. All these results suggested that Olig2 could be an excellent druggable target in anti-LCSCs therapy and lay a foundation for the further application of ACT001 in the treatment of lung cancer in clinical.

Abstract
A novel polystyrene (PS) substrate with microscale porous structure was facilely fabricated by crystalline-controlled casting method using mixed solvent [N,N-dimethylformamide and ethyl alcohol (v/v)] based on the nonsolvent induced phase separation process. The substrate surfaces exhibited a bi-continuous microscale porous morphology with high porosity, large pore size and pore-pore connection structure. Moreover, behaviors of the normal human liver cell line (HL-7702) seeded on this substrate surface were carefully investigated. The results indicated that the cell adhesion, spread and cell-cell connection on the surface with subcellular pore size (∼ 10 μm) were similar to the cells proliferated on the flat PS surface. However, the number of HL-7702 cells proliferated on the PS microscale porous surface was higher than cells on the conventional PS flat surface, suggesting that the pore-pore structure was conducive to HL-7702 cell proliferation. Furthermore, hematoxylin and eosin staining and micronucleus test were performed. The results showed that fewer damages for nuclear and cytoplasm and less cell genotoxicity were caused by the microscale porous structure within the scope of pore size (∼ 10 μm) than that of the flat surface.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between FoxP3+ regulatory T lymphocytes (Tregs) in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and peritumoral tissues with CD34 expression and patient prognosis. METHODS Fifty-five sets of patient-matched tumors and peritumoral tissues were obtained during curative resection for HCC. In situ immunohistochemistry was used to assess and comparatively analyze Treg presence and CD34 expression in each specimen set. The relation between quantified Tregs values and various clinicopathologic factors were evaluated by the Spearman Rank Correlation test. Univariate (Log Rank test) and multivariate (Cox Regression model) analyses were used to determine the potential prognostic value of each factor. RESULTS The average number of intratumoral Tregs was significantly higher than that in corresponding peritumoral tissues (10.8 (range: 4.4 to 19.4) vs. 1.4 (0.6 to 3.2), respectively; P less than 0.01). The presence of intratumoral Tregs correlated with up-regulated CD34 expression (r = 0.279, P less than 0.05). Increased number of intratumoral Tregs were significantly associated with decreased rates of overall survival (OS, P less than 0.05) and disease-free survival (DFS, P less than 0.05), and was identified as an independent prognostic factor (OS, hazard ratio (HR) = 3.310, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.368-8.007, P less than 0.01; DFS, HR = 2.666, 95% CI: 1.321 to 6.394, P less than 0.01). CONCLUSION Intratumoral infiltration by Tregs is a marker of poor prognosis in HCC patients.

Abstract
AIM To investigate if loss of epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is associated with microinvasion in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) in the presence of chronic hepatitis B. METHODS The expression of EpCAM, cytokeratin 7 (CK7) and CK19 in 112 hepatic nodules was studied, including 20 HCCs with nodules ≤ 3 cm, 26 HCCs with nodules > 3 cm, 20 high-grade dysplastic nodules, 26 cirrhotic, large regenerative nodules and 20 cases of cirrhosis. RESULTS Membranes of ductular reaction (DR) hepatobiliary cells, interlobular bile duct and some hepatic cells were positive for EpCAM expression. Active expression of DR/EpCAM was observed in the majority of noninvasive nodules (50/66, 75.76%); however, expression was absent in the major area of invasion in HCCs (42/46, 91.30%). DR/EpCAM loss in HCCs ≤ 3 cm was higher than in high-grade dysplastic nodules (HGDNs) (P < 0.05), cirrhotic, large regenerative nodules and cirrhosis (P < 0.01). Furthermore, patients (20 HCCs ≤ 3 cm, 26 HCCs > 3 cm, 20 HGDNs) with DR/EpCAM expression had a higher overall survival rate (P < 0.01) and lower early recurrence rate (P < 0.01). DR/EpCAM expression showed a close relationship with DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 expression (P < 0.01). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of DR/EpCAM was similar to that of DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 (P > 0.05). The diagnostic specificity and diagnostic accuracy were both increased when DR/EpCAM, DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 were combined (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION DR/EpCAM loss may be a useful marker for determining microinvasion in HCCs ≤ 3 cm, but also for predicting prognosis.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic airway inflammation that caused by many factors. The voltage-gated proton channel Hv1 has been proposed to extrude excessive protons produced by NADPH oxidase (NOX) from cytosol to maintain its activity during respiratory bursts. Here, we showed that loss of Hv1 aggravates ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic lung asthma in mice. The numbers of total cells, eosinophils and neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of Hv1-deficiency (KO) mice are obviously increased after OVA challenge compared with that of wild-type (WT) mice. Histopathological staining reveals that Hv1-deficiency aggravates OVA-induced inflammatory cell infiltration and goblet cell hyperplasia in lung tissues. The expression of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 are markedly increased in lung tissues of OVA-challenged KO mice compared with that of WT mice. Furthermore, the expression levels of NOX2, NOX4 and DUOX1 are dramatically increased, while the expression levels of SOD2 and catalase are significantly reduced in lung tissues of OVA-challenged KO mice compared with that of WT mice. The production of ROS in lung tissues of KO mice is significantly higher than that of WT mice after OVA challenge. Our data suggest that Hv1-deficiency might aggravate the development of allergic asthma through increasing ROS production.

Abstract
Survivin expression in the serum of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and nonmalignant chronic liver diseases remain to be elucidated. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the diagnostic role of survivin in the serum of patients with HCC and identify which ELISA kit performed best in detecting the levels of serum survivin. In total, 80 patients were included in the present study, including 20 patients with HCC, 20 patients with liver cirrhosis, 20 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection and 20 healthy volunteers. The levels of survivin protein in the serum were detected using two different ELISA kits (R&D and Abnova). The positive ratios of serum survivin detected by the R&D ELISA kit in all the cases were 8.75% (7/80; median, 0 pg/ml; range, 0-39.8 pg/ml) and in HCC patients were 5% (1/20; median, 0 pg/ml; range, 0-39.8 pg/ml). For the same samples analyzed using the Abnova ELISA kit, the positive ratios of serum survivin in all the cases were 22.5% (18/80; median, 0 pg/ml; range, 0-553.5 pg/ml) and in HCC patients were 25% (5/20; median, 0 pg/ml; range, 0-93.5 pg/ml). The results obtained by the different ELISA kits demonstrated no statistically significant differences in the level of survivin between HCC patients and healthy controls. The correlation coefficient was 0.0064 (P=0.481) when analyzing the same serum samples with the different ELISA kits. In addition, the highest positive ratio of serum survivin was observed using the Abnova kit. A statistically significant difference in the results was observed between the R&D and Abnova kits. In general, the levels and positive ratios of serum survivin in the patients with HCC were significantly low. Furthermore, no difference was observed between HCC patients and controls in regard to the levels of serum survivin detected by the R&D and Abnova ELISA kits. In conclusion, survivin is unlikely to be a promising serological maker for the diagnosis of HCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between IL-28B rs8099917 polymorphism and the outcome of HBV infection. METHODS Genotype of rs8099917 (T > G) in IL-28B locus was determined by TaqMan SNP genotyping from 486 individuals which including 199 chronic HBV carriers (including 100 HBV-induced liver cirrhosis and 99 HBV-related HCC). 143 people with self-limited infection and 144 healthy people served as controls. Multivariate analysis was used to assess the effect of IL-28B rs8099917 SNP among all the studied groups. RESULTS Distribution of genotype and allele of the rs8099917 locus were in accordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in different groups or with the total population. The frequencies of the rs8099917 TT, GT, GG genotypes were 89.3%, 10.5% and 0.2%, and the frequency of allele T and G accounted for 94.5% and 5.5%, respectively. In respect of genotype or allele frequency, there was no significant differences found among the groups (P > 0.05). When comparing with the TT genotype, data from the multinomial logistic analysis showed that the ORs and (95%CI) of TG/GG genotypes were 1.589 (0.735 - 3.437), 1.351 (0.550 - 3.316) and 1.704 (0.717 - 4.052), respectively. The genotype frequencies in different groups with different clinical features showed that TG/GG genotypes significantly increased the risk of r-GTII(+) for individuals with HBV-related HCC (χ(2) = 17.534, P = 0.001), with OR as 14.821 (3.227 - 68.064). It was particularly so for males (χ(2) = 14.924, P = 0.014), with OR (95%CI) as 45.000 (2.772 - 730.571). CONCLUSION IL-28B rs8099917 SNP had no correlation with the outcome of HBV infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of absent ductular reaction (DR) at hepatocellular-stromal boundaries in early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS Cytokeratin (CK)7 and CK19 expression was detected by the SP immunohistochemistry method in 112 hepatic nodules taken from 20 cases of early HCC, 26 cases of HCC with nodules more than 3 cm, 20 cases of high-grade dysplastic nodule (HGDN), 26 cases of low-grade dysplastic nodule (LGDN), and 20 cases of cirrhosis (CIR). DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 were assessed separately on a semi-quantitative scale and statistically analyzed. RESULTS The mean age of the patients in the study was 53.71 years-old, and the study population consisted of 73 males and 39 females. The follow-up time ranged from 3 to 90 months. Positive CK7 and CK19 staining was detected in the cytoplasm of DR-positive hepatobiliary cells, interlobular bile duct, and a portion of hepatic cells. All of the DR/CK7- and DR/CK19-positive cells were localized around the non-invasive nodules. Specimens with focal or diffuse DR/CK7- and DR/CK19-loss had more robust stromal invasion. Specimens from early HCC cases showed greater DR/CK19 loss than specimens from HGDN cases, LGDN cases and CIR cases (all P less than 0.01). DR/CK7 loss of early HCC was less than HCC with nodules more than 3 cm (P less than 0.05), and more than LGDN cases and CIR cases (both P less than 0.01).The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of DR/CK7 was very similar to that of DR/CK19 (P more than 0.05). Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 were positively correlated with tumor-free time (P less than 0.01) and negatively correlated with early recurrence time as well as death rate (both P less than 0.01). Furthermore, cases showing DR/CK7 or DR/CK19 loss had lower overall survival rate and tumor-free survival rate (P less than 0.01) and higher early recurrence rate (P less than 0.01). CONCLUSION DR/CK7 and DR/CK19 immunostaining may help to distinguish non-invasive HGDNs from both minimally-invasive and overtly-invasive HCCs by identifying small foci of invasion and predicting increased risk of invasiveness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) precore (PC) and basal core promoter (BCP) mutations and HBV-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HB-ACLF). METHODS Forty-four patients with HB-ACLF and 28 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB; used as controls) were enrolled and venous blood samples were collected from all individuals. The PC and BCP gene fragments were amplified by nested PCR. HBV genotype and BCP/PC mutations were determined by direct sequencing and analysis by BioEdit (version 7.0.9.0). Ten of the HB-ACLF patients were selected for follow-up (range: 2-8 weeks), which included once weekly sera collection to determine the relation of mutations and treatment response. Serum levels of HBV DNA were measured by real-time PCR assay, and alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, creatinine and albumin were measured by standard biochemical assay and used to determine the MELD score. RESULTS All 44 HB-ACLF patients were infected with HBV genotype C. In the CHB group, 26 patients were infected with genotype C and two with genotype B. Single mutations (A1762T, G1764A, T1753V, G1896A, and G1899A) and combined mutations (A1762T + G1764A, G1896A + G1899A, T1753V+ A1762T + G1764A, G1896A + G1899A + A1762T + G1764A, and A1762T + G1764A + G1896A) were more frequently detected in HB-ACLF patients than in CHB patients (P less than 0.05). A significantly higher proportion of PC/BCP wild-type sequences was found in patients with CHB than in patients with HB-ACLF (17.9% vs. 2.3%; x² = 5.440, P = 0.020). The proportion of patients carrying both PC and BCP mutations was significantly higher in HB-ACLF patients than in CHB patients (79.6% vs. 39.3%; x² = 12.021, P = 0.001). The proportion of patients carrying only BCP mutation was 42.9% in the CHB group and 20.5% in the HB-ACLF group (x² = 4.157, P = 0.041). No occurrences of only PC mutation were detected in either the CHB or HB-ACLF group. The combined mutations were present in all 10 of the HB-ACLF follow-up patients. Mutations G1899A, T1753V, and A1846T were correlated with disease recovery. Significant decreases in the MELD score were accompanied by decreases in the A1846T mutation. CONCLUSION Significantly more HB-ACLF patients carried HBV with mutations in the PC and BCP than CHB patients. Moreover, more HB-ACLF patients carried HBV with PC + BCP combined mutations and PC mutation only. The G1899A, T1753C, and A1846T mutations were associated with HB-ACLF response to treatment and improvement in liver function.

Abstract
Bile acids and salts have been shown to play a role in liver carcinogenesis through DNA damage, inflammation, and tumor proliferation. However, the correlation between bile acid metabolism and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis remains unclear. This study aimed to identify a predictive signature of bile acid and bile salt metabolism-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) for HCC prognosis and treatment response. The study used HCC RNA-sequencing data and corresponding clinical and prognostic data from The Cancer Genome Atlas. A prognostic model consisting of five bile acid and bile salt metabolism-related lncRNAs was developed and evaluated in a training set, a validation set and an external set. The model demonstrated good performance in predicting HCC prognosis and was shown to be an independent biomarker for prognosis. Additionally, our study revealed a significant association between the signature and immune cell infiltration, as well as its predictive value for therapeutic responses to both immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Furthermore, three LncRNAs (LUCAT1, AL031985.3 and AC015908.3) expression levels in our signature were validated through qRT-PCR in a cohort of 50 pairs of HCC patient tumor samples and corresponding adjacent non-tumor samples, along with 10 samples of normal liver tissue adjacent to benign lesions. These findings suggest that this novel bile acid and bile salt metabolism-related lncRNA signature can independently predict the prognosis of patients with HCC and may be utilized as a potential predictor of response to treatment in this setting.

Abstract
AIM To assess the impact of hepatitis B surface (HBsAg) seroclearance on survival outcomes in hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer. METHODS Information from patients with hepatitis B-related liver cancer admitted in our hospital from 2008-2017 was retrieved. Cases diagnosed with HBsAg (-) and HBcAb (+) liver cancer were included in the HBsAg seroclearance (SC) group. HBsAg (+) liver cancer patients strictly matched for liver cancer stage (AJCC staging system, 8th edition), Child-Pugh score, and first diagnosis/treatment method (surgery, ablation and TACE) were assigned to the HBsAg non-seroclearance (NSC) group. Then, clinical, pathological and survival data in both groups were assessed. RESULTS The SC and NSC groups comprised of 72 and 216 patients, respectively. Patient age (P < 0.001) and platelet count (P = 0.001) in the SC group were significantly higher than those of the NSC group. SC group patients who underwent surgery had more intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and combined HCC-CC (CHC) cases than the NSC group, but no significant differences in tumor cell differentiation and history of liver cirrhosis were found between the two groups. The numbers of interventional treatments were similar in both groups (4.57 vs 5.07, P > 0.05). Overall survival was lower in the SC group than the NSC group (P = 0.019), with 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of 82.1% vs 85.1%, 43.2% vs 56.8%, and 27.0% vs 45.2%, respectively. Survival of patients with AJCC stage I disease in the SC group was lower than that of the NSC group (P = 0.029). CONCLUSION Seroclearance in patients with hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer has protective effects with respect to tumorigenesis, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension but confers worse prognosis, which may be due to the frequent occurrence of highly malignant ICC and CHC.
