Abstract
Introduction We analyzed the effects of mepolizumab treatment on symptoms, asthma attacks, pulmonary function test parameters peripheral blood eosinophil level, and percentage in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma receiving mepolizumab treatment as the baseline, sixth and twelfthmonth data. Materials and Methods The medical records of patients diagnosed with severe eosinophilic asthma and treated with mepolizumab at our clinic were retrospectively reviewed for the period between January 2018 and December 2021. Demographic data of the patients, duration of asthma disease, comorbidities such as a nasal polyp, eosinophilic granulomatous polyangiitis, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug exacerbated respiratory disease were investigated. A comparison was made of various factors before initiating mepolizumab treatment, as well as at the sixth and twelfth month after treatment initiation. These factors include asthma control test scores, frequency of asthma attacks (including emergency admissions, hospitalizations, and intensive care admissions), peripheral blood eosinophil levels and percentages, and pulmonary function test parameters. Clinic and laboratory parameters that provide a prediction of being a responder and super responder were evaluated. Result A total of 21 patients were included in the study. Their mean age was 50.7 ± 11.9 years, and four (19%) were males. The mean duration of asthma diagnosis was 17.5 ±13.7 years. 14 patients (66.7%) were atopic. 4 patients (19%) had nasal polyps and four patients (19%) had NERD. Before mepolizumab, 13 (61.9%) patients had received omalizumab. The duration of receiving mepolizumab treatment was 29.2 ± 9.9 months. A statistically significant decrease was observed in both the number and percentage of eosinophils at months six and 12 (p<0.01). There was a statistically significant increase in FEV1 values both as a percentage and in milliliters at month 12. There was an increase in both percentage and milliliters in FEF25-75 values, but this increase did not reach statistical significance. There was a decrease in service admissions, intensive care admissions, and emergency admissions due to asthma exacerbations. Out of 21 patients, 11 (52.4%) were classified as responders, while 10 (47.6%) were classified as super responders. Conclusions Although the number of patients in our study was limited, mepolizumab improved symptom scores in severe eosinophilic asthma, reduced the number of attacks, and improved pulmonary function test values.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate drug resıstant tuberculosis patients who developed drug hypersensitivity to antituberculosis drug. Methods This was a retrospective study. The primary aim of the study is to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients who develop drug hypersensitivity in drug resistant tuberculosis patients. The secondary aim of the study is to examine the treatment results. Demographic features, tuberculosis diagnostic indicator, clinical signs of developing hypersensitivity reaction, reaction time, and treatment were evaluated. Results A total of 25 patients were included in the study. The prevalence of hypersensitivity in drug resistance patients was 11.9%. Twelve (48%) of the cases were women. Mean age (mean ± SD) was 37.24 ± 14.44 years; early type hypersensitivity reaction in 13 (52%). Three patients were isoniazid resistant; 19 patients were multidrug-resistant (MDR); 2 patients were pre-extensive drug resistant (Pre-XDR), 1 patient was extensive drug resistance (XDR) tuberculosis. The most common skin findings were maculopapular eruption and urticaria. But also we had seen ısole angıodema, urtıcarıa and angıoedema, erythema multıforme, lıchenoıd drug eruptıon and drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms. In patients who developed a hypersensitivity reaction, the responsible agent was identified in 14 cases in total. Among the drugs, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, moxifloxacin, amikacin, para amino salicylic, prothionamide, and cycloserine are the responsible agents. When evaluated in terms of treatment results, 15 (60%) patients successfully completed the treatment. Conclusion Our study is the first study in the literature that evaluated the drug hypersensitivity in drug resıstance tuberculosis patients. Drug hypersensitivity that develops with tuberculosis treatment may lead to discontinuation or change in treatment. İt can cause treatment failure, drug resistance, relapse, and even death. In resistant tuberculosis, the already existing resistance pattern may become more difficult to treat. Success can be achieved with the right management in these patients who have few treatment options, more drug side effects, and high treatment failure rates. The established regimen should be curative and prevent recurrence.

Introduction
Carnitine Palmitoyl Transferase-2 (CPT-2) is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in the pathway of long chain fatty acids. CPT-2 deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disease. Except for neonatal and severe infantile hepatocardiomuscular forms, the myopathic form diagnosed at later ages often presents with attacks of muscle weakness and recurrent rhabdomyolysis attacks.
Clinical Case
A 27-year-old male patient who applied to the emergency department with complaints of pain all over the body, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache and decreased urine output in the last 2 days. He was consulted because of LDH: 456 U/L (0–248 U/L), CK: 5567 U/L (0–190 U/L), AST: 382 U/L (10–37), ALT: 89.8 U/L (10–40 U/L), creatinine: 1.23 mg/dL (0–1,2 mg/dL). He was interned with the prediagnosis of acute kidney injury secondary to rhabdomyolysis. It was learned that he had been fasting for 2 days and working at an intense physical pace. There were intensive care hospitalizations due to rhabdomyolysis at the age of 16 and 24 years and Reye's syndrome at the age of 15. It was not diagnosed at that time. His mother's cousin when he was 15 had sudden cardiac death. On physical examination, he was conscious and his general condition was poor. Blood pressure: 141/100mmHg, pulse: 76/min, and fever: 37.4. There were 4/5 muscle weakness in bilateral lower extremity proximal muscles 3/5, distal muscles 4/5, upper extremity proximal and distal muscles 4/5. Pre-diagnoses of very long chain fatty acid dehydration deficiency, CPT-2 deficiency, glutaric acidemia type-2 were considered, IV hydration and riboflavin 3×100mg, coenzyme-Q 2×100mg, carnitine 2×1gr mitochondrial cocktail were started. Tandem Mass and urine amino acid levels were requested from the patient who was in the attack period. During his hospitalization, he had increases of acute phase reactants and respiratory symptoms, Covid PCR+ was detected. Liver function tests increased under favipravir treatment. In the follow-up, the values of CK, creatinine and liver function tests decreased with hydration. Homozygous c.338C>T(p.Ser113Leu) mutation was detected in the CPT-2 gene.
Conclusion
CPT-2 deficiency should be kept in mind as a rare cause of increased muscle weakness after fasting, intense exercise, and all infections, especially Covid and other upper respiratory tract infections. Intense hydration and mitochondrial cocktail therapy should be added to the patient until the diagnosis is clarified.

Abstract
PURPOSE Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a condition that causes disturbances in normal sensory, motor, and autonomic functions. During SCI, damages occur such as, contusion, compression, distraction. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of the antioxidative thymoquinone on neuron and glia cells in SCI biochemically, immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into Control, SCI and SCI + Thymoquinone groups. After T10- T11 laminectomy was performed, a metal weight of 15 grams was left down the spinal tube for spinal damage. Immediately after the trauma, the muscles and skin incision were sutured. Thymoquinone was given to the rats by gavage as 30mg/kg/21days. Tissues fixed in 10% formaldehyde, embedded in paraffin wax and immunstained with Caspase-9 and phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (pSTAT-3) antibodies. Remaining were stored at -80oC for biochemistry. Frozen spinal cord tissues were placed in a phosphate buffer solution and homogenized, centrifuged then used to measure malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glutathione peroxidase (GSH) and Myeloperoxidase (MPO). RESULTS In the SCI group, MDA, MPO, neuronal degeneration, vascular dilatation, inflammation, apoptotic appearance in the nucleus, loss of membrane and cristae in mitochondria, and dilatation in the endoplasmic reticulum were observed due to degeneration in the neuron structure. In the electron microscopic examination of the trauma + thymoquinone group, the membranes of the nuclei of the glial cells were thick and euchromatin, and mitochondria were shortened in length. In the SCI group, pyknosis and apoptotic changes were observed in neuronal structures and nuclei of glia cells in the substantia grisea and substantia alba region, along with positive Caspase-9 activity. An increase in Caspase-9 activity was observed in endothelial cells in blood vessels. In the SCI + thymoquinone group, Caspase-9 expression was positive in some of the cells in the ependymal canal while the cuboidal cells showed a negative Caspase-9 reaction in the majority. A few degenerated neurons in the substantia grisea region showed a positive reaction with Caspase-9. In SCI group, pSTAT-3 expression was positive in degenerated ependymal cells, neuronal structures, and glia cells. pSTAT-3 expression was positive in the endothelium and surrounding aggregated cells of the enlarged blood vessels. In the SCI+ thymoquinone group, pSTAT-3 expression was negative in most of the bipolar and multipolar neuron structures and glial cells in ependymal cells, enlarged blood vessel endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS It has been thought that thymoquinone application in spinal cord injuries may be an antioxidant that can be recommended as an alternative treatment in suppressing the apoptosis of neural cells by significantly reducing the inflammation process.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of grafting on the fatty acid profile and some physicochemical properties of watermelon seed and seed oil. The ‘Crimson Tide’ cultivar was used as the scion while two wild watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides (A1 and A2)), one Lagenaria siceraria (A3) and one Cucurbita maxima Duchesne x Cucurbita moschata Duchesne (A4) were used as rootstocks. The use of rootstock significantly influenced the fatty acid profile and the physical parameters of seeds and seed oils. The highest linoleic acid ratio was found in the seed oil from A1 and A2, the oil from A3 had the highest oleic acid ratio. The results showed that the content and acid value in seed oils were improved, and that total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of both seed and oil were decreased by grafting. Wild rootstocks can be used in watermelon cultivation to obtain a watermelon seed which is rich in linoleic acid.

Abstract
PURPOSE Epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) is considered to be a surrogate for visceral fat and a novel cardiovascular risk indicator. Hyperprolactinemia has been shown to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The aim was to evaluate the association between EATT, carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), and cardiac functions in patients with prolactinoma. METHODS Patients with the diagnosis of prolactinoma were included. The control group consisted of healthy age matched individuals with normal prolactin levels. Prolactin, fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were measured. EATT, CIMT, cardiac systolic, and diastolic functions were determined using echocardiography. RESULTS We evaluated 67 patients with prolactinoma (aged 40.7 ± 11.9 years, F/M: 51/16) and 57 controls (aged 42.5 ± 7.4 years, F/M: 36/21). Of the 67 patients, 24 had normal prolactin levels. FBG level was higher in prolactinoma patients than in controls. Patients and controls had similar HbA1c, HOMA-IR, ALT, total, HDL, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides levels, and similar cardiac systolic and diastolic functions. Prolactinoma patients had greater EATT (3.0 ± 0.5 mm vs. 2.6 ± 0.4 mm, p < 0.001) and CIMT (0.57 ± 0.08 mm vs. 0.52 ± 0.04 mm, p = 0.03) than controls. EATT was correlated with body mass index, FBG, HbA1c, and triglyceride levels. CONCLUSIONS EATT and CIMT were greater in patients with prolactinoma, although they had normal cardiac systolic and diastolic functions.

Abstract
Background/aim We aimed to present the clinical results of patients with medullary carcinoma under follow-up in our center and to determine parameters affecting remission and lymph node metastases. Material and methods A retrospective analysis was performed of the medical records of 27 patients with MTC who were followed up between 2004 and 2020. Results The mean age at diagnosis was 47.7 ± 14 years. The mean follow-up was 7.29 ± 4.9 years. Metastatic neck lymphadenopathy was detected in eight (29.6%) patients; none had distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis. The median tumor diameter was 1.50 (range: 0.4–6) cm. The median postoperative calcitonin level was 3.3 (range, 0.5–871) ng/L. Relapse occurred in 2 (range, 1–14) years after the first surgery in three (11.1%) patients. In the last visit, 7 (25.9%) patients had a structural incomplete response, and three (11.1%) patients had a biochemical incomplete response. Seventeen (59.3%) patients were in remission, no patients died of MTC or any other cause. Elevated postoperative calcitonin level was a significant prognostic parameter for remission (p = 0.12) and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001). Conclusion Elevated postoperative calcitonin level and perithyroid soft tissue invasion were significant prognostic parameters for remission and lymph node metastasis. Postoperative calcitonin level and calcitonin doubling time should be considered for prognostic and survival risk assessments.

Abstract
Background: Monogenic hypercholesterolemia with Mendelian inheritance is a heterogeneous group of diseases that are characterized by elevated plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and the most common form of this disorder is autosomal-dominant familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Methods: A total of 104 index cases with the clinical diagnosis of FH were included in this study. Low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) was sequenced using the Sanger sequencing method. Results: Pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants were detected in LDLR in 55 of the 104 cases (mutation detection rate = 52.8%). Thirty different variants were detected in LDLR, three of which were novel. The total cholesterol and LDL-C values of the patients in the group of premature termination codon (PTC) mutation carriers were significantly higher than those of the patients in the group of non-PTC mutation carriers. A total of 87 patients (17 pediatric and 70 adult cases) were diagnosed with cascade genetic screening. Statin treatment was recommended to all 87 patients and was accepted and initiated in 70 of these patients. Conclusions: This study is the largest patient cohort that evaluated FH cases in the Turkish population. Herein, we revealed the LDLR mutation spectrum for a Turkish population and compared the cases in the context of genotype-phenotype correlation. Genetic screening of individuals with suspected FH not only helps to establish their diagnosis, but also facilitates early diagnosis and treatment initiation in other family members through cascade screening.

Abstract
Context Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) promote oxidative stress and inflammation by altering structure and function of proteins. They are excessively produced mainly in hyperglycemia, chronic inflammation and are involved in the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Aims The aim of this study was to investigate whether skin AGEs levels were increased and had relation to premature atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis. Subjects and Methods Fifty-two psoriasis patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) were included. AGEs were determined by skin autofluorescence (SAF) analysis. High-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) were also investigated. Physical activity and dietary patterns were determined. Statistical Analysis Used Fisher's exact test, two-sample t-tests, Mann-Whitney-U test, Pearson correlation, Spearman correlation, and Wilcoxon test. Results SAFs were increased in psoriasis patients (1.8 arbitrary units [AUs]) compared to that in HC (1.6 AUs) (P = 0.057). Median CIMT values of HC and psoriasis groups were 0.43 (0.28-0.79), and 0.59 (0.44-0.98) respectively and the differences were significant (P = 0.001); hsCRP levels were not different between groups. Conclusions Skin AGE accumulation was found to have a correlation with CIMT in psoriasis patients providing evidence for the role of AGEs in premature atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Aim Increased dyspnea, sputum volume, and purulence are subjective symptoms in COPD patients. To diagnose COPD exacerbations with chronic respiratory failure (CRF) and to assess the requirement for antibiotic treatment, physicians require more objective criteria. We aimed to investigate whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can be used as an infectious exacerbation marker in COPD patients with CRF. Patients and methods This retrospective cross-sectional study was performed in the intensive care outpatient clinic of a tertiary training hospital between 2014 and 2015. Patients admitted with CRF due to COPD and who had complete blood count (CBC) results were enrolled. CBC results and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were obtained from the hospital online database. The “modified exacerbation model (MEM)” was defined as follows: exacerbation A, leukocytes ≥12,000/mm3, CRP >10 mg/dL; exacerbation B, leukocytes ≥10,000/mm3, CRP >10 mg/dL; exacerbation C, leukocytes ≥10,000/mm3, CRP >8 mg/dL; exacerbation D, leukocytes ≥10,000/mm3, CRP >5 mg/dL. The cutoff value of NLR was defined for each model. Patients were split into two groups based on the NLR cutoff value according to the “NLR exacerbation model” and further subgrouped according to peripheral eosinophil percentage (eosinophils ≥2% and <2%) and compared with the MEM. Results A total of 1,066 COPD patients (430 females, 40.3%), with a mean age of 66±13 years, were included. A NLR cutoff value of 3.54 (NLR ≥3.54, n=366, 34%) showed the highest sensitivity and specificity for model A (78%, 69%), model B (63%, 71%), model C (61%, 72%), and model D (58%, 72%). Peripheral eosinophilia (PE ≥2%) was present in 48 patients (4.5%). The ratio of patients with PE <2% in the NLR ≥3.54 group was significantly higher in the MEM (P<0.001). Conclusion The NLR presents an attractive option as an exacerbation marker in COPD patients with CRF due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. In COPD patients with CRF, where the NLR is ≥3.54, PE levels are <2%, and subjective symptoms are present, antibiotic treatment should be considered.

Abstract
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors may reduce urinary albumin excretion (UAE) by decreasing glomerular pressure and increasing glomerular charge selectivity through preservation of glycosaminoglycans. The effect of Angiotensin II antagonism on glomerular charge selectivity remains to be determined. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of an AT1 blocker losartan and an ACE inhibitor (ACE-I) enalapril on UAE, extracellular matrix proteins, glycosaminoglycan excretion (UGAG) and red blood cell anionic charge (RBCCh) which are the indirect markers of glomerular basement membrane anionic content in hypertensive Type 2 diabetic patients. Twenty-four patients were randomised into two groups and received either enalapril (5—20 mg/d) or losartan (50—100 mg/d). All parameters were measured at baseline and after six months of treatment. At the end of six months, systolic and diastolic blood pressures (BP), UAE rates, UGAG excretion and RBCCh were significantly and equally reduced in both treatment groups compared with baseline. RBCCh was negatively correlated with UAE (r=-0. O 57, p<0.0001) and UGAG excretion (r=-0.57, Rp<0.0001); UAE was correlated with UGAG excretion (r=0.58, p<0.0001). In conclusion, enalapril and losartan treatment were equally effective in reducing BP, UAE as well as UGAG excretion and preserving RBCCh in hypertensive Type 2 diabetic patients. ACE inhibition and AT1-receptor blockade may have favourable effects on preserving glomerular anionic content in hypertensive diabetic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Healthcare workers have long working hours indoors and are at risk of vitamin D deficiency. The aim of this study was to determine seasonal vitamin D status and its relationship with early atherosclerotic markers, endothelial function, and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in healthcare workers of Marmara University Hospital, İstanbul. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and ninety healthy volunteer healthcare workers and 66 nonmedical volunteers of Marmara University Hospital were included in the study and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), calcium, intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), endothelial function, and CIMT were measured twice during winter and summer seasons. RESULTS Mean vitamin D levels were 20 ng/mL in summer and 16.4 ng/mL in winter. Out of the healthcare workers, 48.9% were vitamin D deficient at the end of summer and 71.5% in winter. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) values were similar in both groups in both seasons; however, FMD values of 64 healthcare workers in summer were significantly higher than in winter. Serum 25(OH)D was positively associated with FMD (r = 0.1797, P = 0.0441) and negatively correlated with serum PTH (r = -0.2459, P < 0.0001). A negative correlation between FMD and serum PTH (r = -0.1757, P = 0.0473) was observed. CONCLUSION Vitamin D levels of healthcare workers are very low, even in summer time. Healthcare workers must be considered a group at major risk for vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the protective effects of resveratrol, gliclazide, and losartan, at biochemical and histopathological levels, on the rat kidney with experimentally induced type 1 diabetes. STUDY DESIGN A total of 35 adult male Wistar rats were divided into control, diabetic, diabetic gliclazide, diabetic resveratrol, and diabetic losartan groups. For biochemical analysis, based on one of the kidneys, superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and catalase were used for measurement. The other kidney was stained for histochemical and immunohistochemical markers and examined by light microscopy. RESULTS Nephropathy due to diabetes was developed at the end of the third week in the diabetic group: in the glomeruli, contraction from Bowman distance, diffuse mesangial matrix increasing and tubular dilation, and cytoplasmic vacuolar changes were observed. In tubulointerstitial areas, some tubular structures, an increased expression of VEGF was observed. CONCLUSION As a result, in diabetic rats, the effects of gliclazide, resveratrol, and losartan cure were equivalent to each other according to the parameters which were followed. Resveratrol, gliclazide, and losartan significantly protected renal glomeruli and the proximal and distal tubules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to analyze functional changes at brainstem and spinal levels in essential tremor (ET), Parkinson's disease (PD) and coexisting essential tremor and Parkinson's disease (ET-PD). PATIENTS AND METHOD Age- and gender-matched patients with tremor (15 ET, 7 ET with resting tremor, 25 ET-PD and 10 PD) and 12 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Diagnosis was established according to standardized clinical criteria. Electrophysiological studies included blink reflex (BR), auditory startle reaction (ASR) and long latency reflex (LLR). RESULTS Blink reflex was normal and similar in all groups. Probability of ASR was significantly lower in ET-PD group whereas it was similar to healthy subjects in ET and PD (P<0.001). LLR was recorded during voluntary activity in all three groups. LLR II was more common in ET, PD and ET-PD groups. LLR III was far more common in the PD group (n=3, 13.6% in ET; n=4, 16.0% in ET-PD and n=7, 46.7% in PD; p=0.037). CONCLUSIONS Despite the integrity of BR pathways, ASR and LLR show distinctive abnormalities in ET-PD. In our opinion, our electrophysiological findings support the hypothesis that ET-PD is a distinct entity.

Abstract
Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness is a novel cardiovascular risk indicator, whereas carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) is a known marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to measure EAT thickness and CIMT in subclinical hypothyroid (SCH) patients and to determine the effect of restoration of the euthyroid state on these variables. The study included 43 patients with SCH (mean age: 35.2±10.7 years; F-M ratio: 42:1) and 30 healthy controls (mean age: 34.5±8.2 years; F-M ratio: 25:5). EAT thickness and CIMT were measured via conventional echocardiography and ultrasonography. Among the patients, 23 were followed up with L-thyroxine replacement until restoration of the euthyroid state and re-evaluated 6 months after baseline. Basal EAT thickness was higher in the SCH patients than in the controls (3.2±0.7 vs. 2.3±0.3 mm-p<0.0001), whereas CIMT was similar in both groups (0.50±0.09 vs. 0.48±0.04 mm). EAT thickness was correlated with CIMT in the patient group (r=0.39, p=0.01), but this correlation was not evident based on multivariate analysis when corrected for age and body mass index (r2=0.47 and p=0.0001 for the model). In the follow-up patient subgroup, both EAT thickness and CIMT decreased significantly following L-thyroxine treatment, when normal TSH levels were attained (3.4±0.7 vs. 2.3±0.5 mm-p=0.007 and 0.51±0.09 vs. 0.46±0.07 mm-p=0.01, respectively). EAT thickness was greater in the SCH patients than in controls, whereas CIMT was similar in both groups. Restoration of the euthyroid state with L-thyroxine treatment was associated with significant decreases in EAT thickness and CIMT in the group of patients that received L-thyroxine treatment and, as such, might reduce the cardiovascular risk associated with SCH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the immunohistochemical and histopathological changes in facial skin after exposure to maneb (manganese ethylene bisdithiocarbamate), a fungicidal dithiocarbamate pesticide. STUDY DESIGN In the experimental group maneb was administered by inhalation to 10 male Wistar albino rats for 5 days each week for 3 weeks. As a biological control, the control group (n = 10) received distilled water by spray for the same time period. The experiment was terminated after 3 weeks. Sections of rat facial skin were examined histopathologically. RESULTS In the experimental group, microscopic examination of facial skin revealed degeneration of the epidermis, detection of mild inflammatory reaction, and vascular dilation in the connective tissue. Hair follicles and degenerative changes were observed in the deeper parts. In the experimental group, dilation of the blood vessels in the dermis and hemorrhage were supported by an increase in CD34 expression. In addition, a reduction in the number of melanocytes (hypopigmentation) was observed in the hair follicles and epidermis, along with a decrease in the expression of CD117. CONCLUSION Epidermal degeneration, intradermal cell infiltration, vascular changes, and reduction in the number of melanocytes in the follicle and content of cytokeratin in both the epidermis and hair follicle keratinocytes were detected after maneb application. These findings may have important implications in the association with main signaling pathways, including keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation. Disruption of these pathways may cause some dermatoses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possible predictors of thyroid disorders after neck radiotherapy, with a focus on radiation dose-volume factors. METHODS Thyroid function was measured in 100 patients who had received radiotherapy to the neck, including the thyroid. All radiation-induced thyroid dysfunctions were determined with an endpoint of abnormal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3) and thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid peroxidase antibodies and (TPA). The total volume of the thyroid, mean radiation dose to the thyroid (Dmean) and thyroid volume percentage that received radiation doses of 10-50 Gy (V10-V50) were calculated in all patients. The evaluated risk factors for thyroid dysfunction included dose-volume parameters, sex, age, previous surgery, chemotherapy and comorbidity. RESULTS There were 52 patients with hypothyroidism and V30 (p = 0.03), thyroid volume (p = 0.01) and Dmean (p = 0.03) appeared to be correlated with hypothyroidism in univariate analysis. However, there was not association found in multivariate analysis for these factors. CONCLUSIONS Thyroid disorders after radiation therapy to the neck still represent a clinically underestimated problem. V30 may be a useful tool for evaluating the risk of hypothyroidism when determining an individual patient's treatment.
