Synthesis of C-Alkyl Glycosides from Alkyl Bromides and Glycosyl Carboxylic Acids via Ni/Photoredox Dual Catalysis

C-Alkyl glycosides, an important class of C-glycosides, are widely found in various drugs and natural products. The synthesis of C-alkyl glycosides has attracted considerable attention. Herein, we developed a Ni/photoredox catalyzed decarboxylative C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling reaction of stable glycosylcarboxylic acids with simple aliphatic bromides to generate C-alkyl glycosides. The method successfully linked several functional molecular fragments (natural products or drugs) to a sugar moiety, showing the extensive application prospects of this transformation. Controlled experiments and DFT calculations demonstrated that the reaction pathway contains a free radical process, and a possible mechanism is proposed.

External validation of a novel nomogram for diagnosis of Protein Energy Wasting in adult hemodialysis patients

Background

Protein Energy Wasting (PEW) has high incidence in adult hemodialysis patients and refers to a state of decreased protein and energy substance. It has been demonstrated that PEW highly affects the quality of survival and increases the risk of death. Nevertheless, its diagnostic criteria are complex in clinic. To simplify the diagnosis method of PEW in adult hemodialysis patients, we previously established a novel clinical prediction model that was well-validated internally using bootstrapping. In this multicenter cross-sectional study, we aimed to externally validate this nomogram in a new cohort of adult hemodialysis patients.

Methods

The novel prediction model was built by combining four independent variables with part of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) diagnostic criteria including albumin, total cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI). We evaluated the performance of the new model using discrimination (Concordance Index), calibration plots, and Clinical Impact Curve to assess its predictive utility.

Results

From September 1st, 2022 to August 31st, 2023, 1,158 patients were screened in five medical centers in Shanghai. 622 (53.7%) hemodialysis patients were included for analysis. The PEW predictive model was acceptable discrimination with the area under the curve of 0.777 (95% CI 0.741-0.814). Additionally, the model revealed well-fitted calibration curves. The McNemar test showed the novel model had similar diagnostic efficacy with the gold standard diagnostic method (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

Our results from this cross-sectional external validation study further demonstrate that the novel model is a valid tool to identify PEW in adult hemodialysis patients effectively.

Observation of Strong Nuclear Suppression in Exclusive J/ψ Photoproduction in Au+Au Ultraperipheral Collisions at RHIC

We report a measurement of exclusive J/ψ and ψ(2s) photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV using the STAR detector. For the first time, (i) the ψ(2s) photoproduction in midrapidity at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider has been experimentally measured; (ii) nuclear suppression factors are measured for both the coherent and incoherent J/ψ production. At average photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71±10% and 36±7%, respectively, of that of free protons. The stronger suppression observed in the incoherent production provides a new experimental handle to study the initial-state parton density in heavy nuclei. Data are compared with theoretical models quantitatively.

[The effectiveness and safety of the anti gastroesophageal reflux system in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease: a single center study of 23 cases]

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of domestically produced magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Method: This study is a prospective cohort study. Patients with typical heartburn and reflux symptoms (at least partial response to proton pump inhibitors), abnormal esophageal acid exposure and normal esophageal peristalsis were included, prospectively in the Department of Gastroesophageal Surgery, Rocket Force Characteristic Medical Center from June 2019 to September 2022. Patients with hiatal hernia >2 cm and severe esophagitis were excluded. The MSA was wrapped around the distal esophagus after esophageal hiatus repair by laparoscopy. A postoperative questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the relief of symptom, complications, the discontinuation rate of proton pump inhibitor, and surgical satisfaction. Gastroscopy, high-resolution esophageal pressure measurement, and pH value impedance monitoring were also reviewed. The pre- and postoperative rates were compared using the McNeinar χ2 test. Result: Currently, 23 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease were enrolled and underwent MSA surgery. There were 20 males and 3 females, aged (M (IQR)) 48 (14) years (range: 25 to 64 years). All cases were successfully implanted with MSA. Subjective indicators were followed for 17 (18) months (range: 14 to 53 months), while objective indicators were followed for 17 (1) months (range: 12 to 23 months). The postoperative gastrointestinal and extraesophageal symptom scores showed a significant decrease compared to preoperative levels as follows: the degree of subjective relief of overall digestive symptoms was 90 (20)% (range:0~100%), the degree of subjective relief of overall respiratory symptoms was 100(10)% (range: 10%~100%), the overall satisfaction rate was 83% (19/23), the proton pump inhibitor discontinuation rate was 70% (16/23). The proportion of esophagitis has decreased from 44% (10/23) to 9% (2/23) (κ=0.169, P=0.039), The Hill grade of gastroesophageal valve morphology improved from 1 case of grade Ⅰ, 5 cases of grade Ⅱ, 10 cases of grade Ⅲ, and 7 cases of grade Ⅲ preoperative to 22, 1, 0, and 0 cases postoperative. The proportion of lower esophageal sphincter pressure below normal has decreased from 70% (16/23) to 35% (8/23) (κ=0.170, P=0.012). There were 21 patients who restored normal esophageal acid exposure. Eleven patients had mild long-term dysphagia, but it didn't affect their daily life. No postoperative device migration, erosion, or secondary surgical removal occurred. Conclusions: Laparoscopic implantation of the MSA device was safe and well tolerated. It can effectively control the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, reduce medication, restore normal cardia morphology and function, and esophageal acid exposure. The main postoperative complication was dysphagia, but it was relatively mild.

Obesity and abdominal hernia in ambulatory patients, 2018-2023

PURPOSE

To determine the relationship between abdominal hernia and obesity. Although obesity is frequently cited as a risk factor for abdominal hernia, few studies have confirmed this association (Menzo et al. Surg Obes Relat Dis 14:1221-1232. 10.1016/j.soard.2018.07.005, 2018).

METHODS

A cross-sectional study of primary care ambulatory patients aged older than 16 years treated at UCLA Health from 01/01/2018 to 06/06/2023. Abdominal hernia was identified by clinic encounter ICD-10 codes (K40-K46).

RESULTS

There were 41,703 hernias identified among 1,362,440 patients (306.1 per10,000) with a mean age of 62.5 ± 16.1 years, and 57.6% were men. Nearly half (44.7%) of all abdominal hernias were diaphragmatic. There was an approximately equal distribution of the ventral (28.7%) and inguinal (24.3%) hernia. Each hernia type had a different relationship with obesity: The odds of having a ventral hernia increased with BMI in both sexes: BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2 odds ratio (OR) = 1.65, (CI 1.56-1.74); BMI 30-39.9 kg/m2 OR = 2.42 (CI 2.29-2.56), BMI 40-49.9 kg/m2 OR = 2.28 (CI 2.05-2.54) and BMI >  = 50 kg/m2 OR = 2.54 (CI 2.03-3.17) all relative to normal BMI. In contrast, the odds of having an inguinal hernia decreased with obesity relative to normal weight [obesity (BMI 30-39.9 kg/m2): OR = 0.60 (CI 0.56-0.65)], morbid obesity (BMI 40-49.9 kg/m2): OR = 0.29 (CI 0.23-0.37). The OR for diaphragmatic hernia peaks with obesity in women and overweight status in men but was found to decrease with morbid obesity [OR = 1.18 (CI 1.07-1.30)]. There was no significant difference between men and women in the prevalence of femoral hernia (men: 0.7/per10,000, women: 0.9/per10,000, p = 0.19).

CONCLUSIONS

The relationship between hernia and obesity is complex with some hernias decreasing in prevalence as obesity increases. Further research is needed to better understand this paradoxical relationship.

Minimizing Redundancy and Data Requirements of Machine Learning Potential: A Case Study in Interface Combustion

The machine learning potential has emerged as a promising approach for addressing the accuracy-versus-efficiency dilemma in molecular modeling. Efficiently exploring chemical spaces with high accuracy presents a significant challenge, particularly for the interface reaction system. This study introduces a workflow aimed at achieving this goal by incorporating the classical SOAP descriptor and practical PCA strategy to minimize redundancy and data requirements, while successfully capturing the features of complex potential energy surfaces. Specifically, the study focuses on interface combustion behaviors within promising alloy-based solid propellants. A neural network potential model tailored for modeling AlLi-AP interface reactions under varying conditions is constructed, showcasing excellent predictive capabilities in energy prediction, force estimation, and bond energies. A series of large-scale MD simulations reveal that Li doping significantly influences the initial combustion stage, enhancing reactivity and reducing thermal conductivity. Mass transfer analysis also highlights the considerably higher diffusion coefficient of Li compared to Al, with the former being three times greater. Consequently, the overall combustion process is accelerated by approximately 10%. These breakthroughs pave the way for virtual screening and the rational design of advanced propellant formulations and microstructures incorporating alloy-formula propellants.

An evolved artificial radical cyclase enables the construction of bicyclic terpenoid scaffolds via an H-atom transfer pathway

While natural terpenoid cyclases generate complex terpenoid structures via cationic mechanisms, alternative radical cyclization pathways are underexplored. The metal-catalysed H-atom transfer reaction (M-HAT) offers an attractive means for hydrofunctionalizing olefins, providing access to terpenoid-like structures. Artificial metalloenzymes offer a promising strategy for introducing M-HAT reactivity into a protein scaffold. Here we report our efforts towards engineering an artificial radical cyclase (ARCase), resulting from anchoring a biotinylated [Co(Schiff-base)] cofactor within an engineered chimeric streptavidin. After two rounds of directed evolution, a double mutant catalyses a radical cyclization to afford bicyclic products with a cis-5-6-fused ring structure and up to 97% enantiomeric excess. The involvement of a histidine ligation to the Co cofactor is confirmed by crystallography. A time course experiment reveals a cascade reaction catalysed by the ARCase, combining a radical cyclization with a conjugate reduction. The ARCase exhibits tolerance towards variations in the dienone substrate, highlighting its potential to access terpenoid scaffolds.

The fate of plastic wraps in constructed wetland: Surface structure and microbial community

The high use of plastic wraps leads to significant environmental pollution. In this study, the surface structure and microbial community evolution of commercially available plastic wraps [polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and polylactic acid (PLA)] in constructed wetlands (CWs) were investigated. The results indicated that all plastic wraps gradually decreased in molecular weight, crystallinity, melting, and crystallization temperatures, whereas a gradual increase was observed in the surface roughness, polymer dispersity index (PDI), carbonyl index (CI) and Shannon index of microorganisms colonizing the CWs. The aging rate of the plastic wrap was in the order: PLA > PVC > PE > PVDC, at the same site in the CWs, and it was in the order: soil surface > plant roots > subsoil, for the same plastic wrap. The diversity of microorganisms colonizing the same plastic wrap was in the order: plant roots > subsoil > soil surface. The Shannon indices of microorganisms on plastic wraps were lower than those in the soil, indicating that the diversity of microorganisms colonizing plastic wraps is limited. Additionally, the microbial community structure on the plastic surface was co-differentiated by the plastic type, placement position in the CWs, and aging time. Significantly different microbial community structures were found on the PVC and PVDC wrap surfaces, revealing that the chlorine in plastics limits microbial diversity. Unclassified members of Rhizobiaceae and Pseudomonadaceae were the dominant genera on the surface of the plastic wraps, suggesting that they may be the microorganisms involved in plastic degradation processes. The study provides valuable perspectives to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the migration, fate, and environmental risks associated with microplastics (MPs) in wetlands.

Machine learning-driven shortening the screening process towards high-performance nitrogen reduction reaction electrocatalysts with four-step screening strategy

The urgent need to prepare clean energy by environmentally friendly and efficient methods, which has led to widespread attention on electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for ammonia production. At present, single atom catalytic nitrogen reduction has become the earliest promising method for industrial production due to its high atomic utilization rate, high selectivity, high controllability, and high stability. However, how to quickly screen catalysts with high catalytic efficiency and selectivity in single-atom catalysts (SACs) remains a challenge. Herein, the 29 SACs are constructed from C6N2 nanosheets doped with transition metals (TM@C6N2), which are analyzed for stability, adsorption performance, NRR catalytic activity, electronic properties, and competitiveness using first-principles calculations. The results show that Mo@C6N2 and Re@C6N2 exhibit the most outstanding catalytic performances, with limiting potentials (UL) of -0.29 and -0.31 V, respectively, in the solvent model. Machine learning is used to derive descriptors from the intrinsic features to predict the free energy changes for the potential-determining step. The importance of features is calculated, with the first ionisation energy (IE1) being the most significant influencing factor. Based on the guidance of machine learning and considering that IE1 is related to the ability of metal atoms to donate electrons, a four-step screening strategy using the Integrated Crystal Orbital Hamilton Populations (ICOHP) to screen catalysts instead of the traditional five-step screening not only improves the screening efficiency but also obtains completely consistent screening results. This work presents a new approach to predicting the catalytic performance of SACs and provides new insights into the influence of intrinsic properties on catalytic activity.

Pnictogen-Bonding Enzymes

The objective of this study was to create artificial enzymes that capitalize on pnictogen bonding, a s-hole interaction that is essentially absent in biocatalysis.  For this purpose, stibine catalysts were equipped with a biotin derivative and combined with streptavidin mutants to identify an efficient transfer hydrogenation catalyst for the reduction of a fluorogenic quinoline substrate.  Increased catalytic activity from wild-type streptavidin to the best mutants coincides with the depth of the s hole on the Sb(V) center, and the emergence of saturation kinetic behavior.  Michaelis-Menten analysis reveals transition-state recognition in the low micromolar range, more than three orders of magnitude stronger than the millimolar substrate recognition.  Carboxylates preferred by the best mutants contribute to transition-state recognition by hydrogen-bonded ion pairing and anion-π interactions with the emerging pyridinium product.  The emergence of challenging stereoselectivity in aqueous systems further emphasizes compatibility of pnictogen bonding with higher order systems catalysis.

Bromocriptine sensitivity in bromocriptine-induced drug-resistant prolactinomas is restored by inhibiting FGF19/FGFR4/PRL

PURPOSE

At present, various treatment strategies are available for pituitary adenomas, including medications, surgery and radiation. The guidelines indicate that pharmacological treatments, such as bromocriptine (BRC) and cabergoline (CAB), are important treatments for prolactinomas, but drug resistance is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed. Therefore, exploring the mechanism of drug resistance in prolactinomas is beneficial for clinical treatment.

METHODS

In our research, BRC-induced drug-resistant cells were established. Previous RNA sequencing data and an online database were used for preliminary screening of resistance-related genes. Cell survival was determined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, colony formation assays and flow cytometry. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‒PCR), western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) were used to assess the molecular changes and regulation. The therapeutic efficacy of BRC and FGFR4 inhibitor fisogatinib (FISO) combination was evaluated in drug-resistant cells and xenograft tumors in nude mice.

RESULTS

Consistent with the preliminary results of RNA sequencing and database screening, fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) expression was elevated in drug-resistant cells and tumor samples. With FGF19 silencing, drug-resistant cells exhibited increased sensitivity to BRC and decreased intracellular phosphorylated fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) levels. After confirming that FGF19 binds to FGFR4 in prolactinoma cells, we found that FGF19/FGFR4 regulated prolactin (PRL) synthesis through the ERK1/2 and JNK signaling pathways. Regarding the effect of targeting FGF19/FGFR4 on BRC efficacy, FISO and BRC synergistically inhibited the growth of tumor cells, promoted apoptosis and reduced PRL levels.

CONCLUSION

Overall, our study revealed FGF19/FGFR4 as a new mechanism involved in the drug resistance of prolactinomas, and combination therapy targeting the pathway could be helpful for the treatment of BRC-induced drug-resistant prolactinomas.

Identification of Attractants from Three Host Plants and How to Improve Attractiveness of Plant Volatiles for Monochamus saltuarius

As a new vector insect of pine wood nematodes in China, the Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) vectors pine wilt nematodes into healthy pine trees through feeding and oviposition, resulting in huge economic losses to forestry. A promising control strategy is to develop safe and efficient attractants. This study aims to screen for the key active volatiles of Pinus koraiensis (Pinales: Pinaceae), Pinus tabuliformis (Pinales: Pinaceae), and Picea asperata (Pinales: Pinaceae) that can attract M. saltuarius, and to study the synergistic attraction of the main attractant plant volatiles with ethanol and insect aggregation pheromones. The preference of M. saltuarius for three hosts is P. koraiensis > P. tabuliformis > Picea asperata. We detected 18 organic volatiles from three host plants. Through EAG assays and indoor Y-tube behavioral experiments, 3-carene, (-)-camphor, β-pinene, α-phellandrene, terpinolene, α-pinene, D-limonene, and myrcene were screened to have attractive effects on M. saltuarius. We found that 3-carene, β-pinene, and α-pinene are the most attractive kairomones in field experiments, which may play a crucial role in the host localization of M. saltuarius. Ethanol has a synergistic effect on the attractant activity of 3-carene and β-pinene, and the synergistic effect on β-pinene is the best. The mixture of ethanol, 2-undecyloxy-1-ethanol, and ipsdienol can significantly enhance the attraction effect of β-pinene on M. saltuarius. These new findings provide a theoretical basis for the development of attractants for adult M. saltuarius and contribute to the green control of M. saltuarius.

Achieving Dendrite-Free Zinc Metal Anodes via Molecule Anchoring and lon-Transport Pumping

The potential for scale-up application has been acknowledged by researchers for rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Nonetheless, the progress of the development is significantly impeded due to the instability of the interface between the zinc anode and electrolyte. Herein, efficient and environmentally benign valine (Val) were introduced as aqueous electrolyte additive to stabilize the electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) via functional groups in additive molecules, thus achieving reversible dendrite-free zinc anode. The amino groups present in Val molecules have a strong ability to adsorb on the surface of zinc metal, enabling the construction of anchored molecular layer on the surface of zinc anodes. The strongly polar carboxyl groups in Val molecules can act as ion-transport pumps to capture zinc ions in the electric double layer (EDL) through coordination chemistry. Therefore, this reconstructed EEI could modulate the zinc ion flux and simultaneously suppress side reactions and dendritic growth of Zn. Consequently, a long stable cycling up to 1400 h at a high current density of 20 mA cm-2 is achieved. Additionally, Zn//V2O5 full cell with Val additive exhibit enhanced cyclability, retaining 77 % capacity after 3000 cycles, displaying significant potential in promoting the commercialization of ZIBs.

The thermal decomposition mechanism of RDX/AP composites: ab initio neural network MD simulations

A neural network potential (NNP) is developed to investigate the decomposition mechanism of RDX, AP, and their composites. Utilizing an ab initio dataset, the NNP is evaluated in terms of atomic energy and forces, demonstrating strong agreement with ab initio calculations. Numerical stability tests across a range of timesteps reveal excellent stability compared to the state-of-the-art ReaxFF models. Then the thermal decomposition of pure RDX, AP, and RDX/AP composites is performed using NNP to explore the coupling effect between RDX and AP. The results highlight a dual interaction between RDX and AP, i.e., AP accelerates RDX decomposition, particularly at low temperatures, and RDX promotes AP decomposition. Analyzing RDX trajectories at the RDX/AP interface unveils a three-part decomposition mechanism involving N-N bond cleavage, H transfer with AP to form Cl-containing acid, and chain-breaking reactions generating small molecules such as N2, CO, and CO2. The presence of AP enhances H transfer reactions, contributing to its role in promoting RDX decomposition. This work studies the reaction kinetics of RDX/AP composites from the atomic point of view, and can be widely used in the establishment of reaction kinetics models of composite systems with energetic materials.

Determining the mechanical and decomposition properties of high energetic materials (α-RDX, β-HMX, and ε-CL-20) using a neural network potential

Molecular simulations of high energetic materials (HEMs) are limited by efficiency and accuracy. Recently, neural network potential (NNP) models have achieved molecular simulations of millions of atoms while maintaining the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) levels. Herein, an NNP model covering typical HEMs containing C, H, N, and O elements is developed. The mechanical and decomposition properties of 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (HMX), and 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) are determined by employing the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the NNP model. The calculated results show that the mechanical properties of α-RDX, β-HMX, and ε-CL-20 agree with previous experiments and theoretical results, including cell parameters, equations of state, and elastic constants. In the thermal decomposition simulations, it is also found that the initial decomposition reactions of the three crystals are N-NO2 homolysis, corresponding radical intermediates formation, and NO2-induced reactions. This decomposition trajectory is mainly divided into two stages separating from the peak of NO2: pyrolysis and oxidation. Overall, the NNP model for C/H/N/O elements in this work is an alternative reactive force field for RDX, HMX, and CL-20 HEMs, and it opens up new potential for future kinetic study of nitramine explosives.

Ab Initio Driven Exploration on the Thermal Properties of Al-Li Alloy

Al-Li alloys are feasible and promising additives in advanced energy and propellant systems due to the significantly enhanced heat release and increased specific impulse. The thermal properties of Al-Li alloys directly determine the manufacturing, storage safety, and ignition delay of propellants. In this study, a neural network potential (NNP) is developed to investigate the thermal behaviors of Al-Li alloys from an atomistic perspective. The novel NNP demonstrates an excellent predictive ability for energy, atomic force, mechanical behaviors, phonon vibrations, and dynamic evolutions. A series of NNP-based molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the effect of Li doping on the thermal properties of Al-Li alloys. All calculated results for Al-Li alloys are consistent with experimental values for Al, ensuring their validity in predicting Al-Li interactions. The simulation results suggest that a minor increment in the Li content results in a slight change in the melting point, thermal expansion, and radical distribution functions. These three properties are associated with the lattice characteristics; nonetheless, it causes a substantial reduction in thermal conductivity, which is related to the physical properties of the elements. The lower thermal conductivity allows heat accumulation on the particle surface, thereby speeding up the surface premelt and ignition. This provides an alternative atomic explanation for the improved combustion performance of Al-Li alloys. These findings integrate insights from the field of alloy material science into crucial combustion applications, serving as an atomistic guide for developing manufacturing techniques.

[Peripheral sterile corneal infiltrates after small incision lenticule extraction]

A 31-year-old female patient with refractive error in both eyes underwent small incision lenticule extraction. On the 4th day after surgery, arc-shaped peripheral corneal infiltrates appeared in the right eye. Tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops, 0.3% gatifloxacin eye drops, and a corneal bandage lens were applied to the eye. After bacterial infection was ruled out, dexamethasone sodium phosphate was injected subconjunctivally near the corneal lesion. The symptoms improved and the corneal lesion subsided afterwards.

Protective Effects of Aspirin Supplemented With Quercetin in L-NAME-Induced Preeclampsia-Like Rats

Aspirin supplemented with quercetin was reported to enhance the therapeutic effects of aspirin in a rat model of preeclampsia. In this study, the underlying mechanisms were further explored. Preeclampsia was induced by L-NAME (50 mg/kg/day) via oral gavage from gestation day (GD)14 to GD19. Aspirin (1.5 mg/kg/day) administration was performed using aspirin mixed with rodent dough from GD0 to GD19. The administration of quercetin (2 mg/kg/day) was performed by intraperitoneal infusion from GD0 to GD19. Protein levels were evaluated using ELISA or Western blot, and microRNA (miRNA) level was evaluated by RT-PCR. Aspirin supplemented with quercetin ameliorated the increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP), proteinuria, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, and improved the pregnancy outcomes in preeclampsia rats. Aspirin supplemented with quercetin inhibited miR-155 expression in preeclampsia rats. The decreased miR-155 level in placenta further increased the protein level of SOCS1 and inhibited the phosphorylation of p65. In this study, we demonstrated that aspirin supplemented with quercetin enhanced the effects of aspirin for the treatment of preeclampsia.

[Effects of nasal valve on subjective nasal patency and nasal resistance: a correlation study on numerical simulation of nasal airflow]

Objective: To investigate the correlations between subjective nasal patency, nasal valve area size and aerodynamic parameters in normal nasal cavity by means of numerical simulation, and to explore the effect of nasal valve on nasal subjective sensation and nasal airflow regulation. Methods: A total of 52 healthy participants (31 males and 21 females) with the average age of 37.8 years, were recruited from the outpatient Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to the Medical College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University between January and August 2023. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores for unilateral nasal subjective sensation were obtained from all participants. Additionally, the aerodynamic characteristics of inspiratory airflow were simulated. A correlation matrix analysis was conducted to identify the correlation strength between these subjective and objective parameters. Results: VAS scores showed negative correlations with unilateral nasal valve cross-sectional area (r=-0.85, P<0.01) and unilateral intranasal airflow (r=-0.57, P<0.01), and was a positive correlation with unilateral nasal resistance (NR) at the front-end of inferior turbinate (r=0.61, P<0.01). The average cross-sectional area of unilateral nasal valve was (0.85±0.35) cm2. The cross-sectional area of unilateral nasal valve was negatively correlated with unilateral NR (r=-0.50, P<0.01), and positively correlated with unilateral nasal airflow (r=0.61, P<0.01). The NR at the nasal valve area accounted for (40.41±23.54)% of the total unilateral NR. Nearly half of the unilateral NR [(46.74±21.38)%] and air warming [(49.96±10.02)%] occurring before the front end of inferior turbinate were achieved. Conclusions: The nasal valve area plays a crucial role in influencing nasal NR, unilateral nasal airflow, and changes in nasal airflow temperature. Moreover, it is associated with subjective perception of nasal patency.

A cross-sectional study investigating the relationship between urinary albumin creatinine ratio and abdominal aortic calcification in adults

Introduction

The presence of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is strongly linked to the development of atherosclerosis and the incidence of morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Urinary albumin creatinine ratio (UACR) was found related with the increased risk of CVD. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the UACR and severe AAC (SAAC).

Methods and Results

This study included a total of 2,379 individuals aged over 40 years, and their information was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted (NHANES) in 2013-2014. The measurement of AAC was conducted through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and assessed using the Kauppila scoring system. SAAC was characterized by a Kauppila score of 6 or higher. Multivariate regression models were used to analyze the relationship between UACR level and SAAC, with covariate adjustment. In the completely adapted model, the top third subgroup exhibits increased likelihood of SAAC (odds ratio 1.50; 95%CI: 0.98, 2.29; p = 0.030) in contrast to the bottom third subgroup. The subgroup analyses revealed a more pronounced correlation among the older participants (p-value for interaction = 0.013).

Discussion

In the United States, SAAC was more likely to occur in adults who had a higher probability of UACR. The use of UACR has the potential to be a valuable method for forecasting the likelihood of SAAC.

Predicting the enthalpy of formation of energetic molecules via conventional machine learning and GNN

Machine learning (ML) provides a promising method for efficiently and accurately predicting molecular properties. Using ML models to predict the enthalpy of formation of energetic molecules helps in fast screening of potential high-energy molecules, thereby accelerating the design of energetic materials. A persistent challenge is to determine the optimal featurization methods for molecular representation and use an appropriate ML model. Thus, in our study, we evaluate various featurization methods (CDS, ECFP, SOAP, GNF) and ML models (RF, MLP, GCN, MPNN), dividing them into two groups: conventional ML models and GNN models, to predict the enthalpy of formation of potential high-energy molecules. Our results demonstrate that CDS and SOAP have advantages over the ECFP, while the GNFs in GCN and MPNN models perform better. Furthermore, the MPNN model performs best among all models with a root mean square error (RMSE) as low as 8.42 kcal mol-1, surpassing even the best performing CDS-MLP model in conventional ML models. Overall, this study provides a benchmark for ML in predicting enthalpy of formation and emphasizes the tremendous potential of GNN in property prediction.

Comparison of clinical data between the proximal femoral bionic nail (PFBN) and hip replacement for the treatment of femoral intertrochanteric fracture

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to compare the difference between proximal femoral bionic nail (PFBN) and hip replacement (HR) for femoral intertrochanteric fracture.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis of the differences in operative time, length of stay, postoperative Harris score, and postoperative mortality between patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture treated by PFBN and HR admitted to Jinzhai County People's Hospital from October 2020 to September 2022 was performed.

RESULTS

A total of 56 patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture, 26 with PFBN and 30 with HR, were included in the study. There were no differences in the length of surgery, pre- and post-operative hemoglobin, or post-operative Harris score at 3 months between the two groups. Compared to the HR group, the PFBN group had a lower total cost, shorter hospital stays, and lower mortality but a longer ambulation time, with a difference of 3.36 weeks.

CONCLUSIONS

PFBN may be a promising new treatment for femoral intertrochanteric fracture.

Ultrasonographic abdominal adipose tissue thickness for the prediction of gestational diabetes mellitus: A meta-analysis

Obesity has been linked to the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The meta-analysis aimed to assess the predictive role of ultrasonographic measurements of the abdominal adipose tissue thickness for GDM in pregnant women. Cohort studies evaluating the association between abdominal subcutaneous and/or visceral adipose thickness (SAT and/or VAT) and subsequent risk of GDM were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Only studies with SAT/VAT measured before the diagnosis of GDM were included. Random-effects models incorporating the influence of potential heterogeneity were used to pool the results. A total of 13 studies involving 5616 pregnant women were included. Pooled results showed that both a high abdominal SAT (odds ratio [OR] for per 1-cm increment: 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07 to 1.41, P = 0.003, I2 = 13%; OR for high versus low category: 3.42, 95% CI: 2.31 to 5.07, P < 0.001, I2 = 0%) and VAT (OR for per 1-cm increment: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.06, P = 0.003, I2 = 63%; OR for high versus low category: 5.73, 95% CI: 3.39 to 9.77, P < 0.001, I2 = 31%) at early stages of pregnancy were associated with a higher subsequent risk of GDM. Subgroup analysis based on study design, timing of ultrasound examination, GDM diagnostic criteria, and study quality score showed consistent results. In conclusion, ultrasound-measured abdominal adipose tissue thickness may be useful for predicting the subsequent risk of GDM in pregnant women.
