Abstract
The retrospective study by Lei et al is an investigation of the relationship between age and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in Chinese patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Elements of the study design prevent the generalizability of the study findings, limiting their clinical implications. We recommend consideration of stricter eligibility criteria, other variables like duration of diabetes, interpretation of gender-differences in SFCT, longitudinal follow-up, use of newer choroidal flow indices, comparison of values with normal controls, subgroup analysis to determine the effect of prior treatment, as well as consideration of various real-world scenarios in future studies.

Abstract
Historical mistreatment of Black persons in research settings has had lasting impacts on their recruitment into present-day studies. A medical student recruited Black individuals for a qualitative study aiming to improve the experiences of Black patients treated in a psychiatric emergency department of a large tertiary care setting. The lessons learned, including the nuanced power dynamics present when a Black student is recruiting Black patients, highlight opportunities for addressing racial inequities through empowerment of the Black community and for requiring investigators to create racially conscious recruitment plans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the last years, multiple studies have been dedicated to evaluate the efficacy of different treatment options for Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD). However, there is a wide variety of endpoints employed across these studies. Our goal is to conduct a systematic review describing the endpoints utilized in studies related to NMOSD. METHODS Medline, Embase, and Cochrane were searched from inception to May 2023, to identify studies analyzing treatment options in patients with NMOSD. We collected data on baseline study characteristics and all efficacy outcomes available. RESULTS We included 127 studies and identified approximately 40 different efficacy endpoints, categorized into 1) relapse, 2) disability, 3) visual acuity, and 4) surrogate outcomes. Most studies were retrospective (54.3 %) and aimed at attack prevention (81.4 %). The most common relapse-related outcomes were annualized relapse rate (73.2 %), followed by relapse rate (50.4 %), and relapse-free rate (36.2 %). The relapse definition also varied widely among studies, with only 73 (57.4 %) studies explicitly addressing the definition used. The most common disability outcome was the Expanded Disability Scale (97.6 %), followed by the Modified Rankin Scale (7.9 %). Visual Acuity Score was employed in 14.2 % of studies, followed by Visual Evoked Potentials (6.3 %). Imaging was the most common surrogate (20.5 %), followed by the fraction of B cells (18.1 %). CONCLUSION Publications were heterogeneous in measuring efficacy, with different use of endpoints and relapse definitions. Standardization across studies would improve data analysis and application in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is important to design clinical trials to include all those who may benefit from the intervention being tested. Several frameworks have been developed to help researchers think about the barriers to inclusion of particular under-served groups when designing a trial, but there is a lack of practical guidance on how to implement these frameworks. This paper describes the ACCESS project, the findings from each phase of the project and the guidance we developed (STEP UP) on how to design more inclusive trials. METHODS Development of the STEP UP guidance had five phases: (1) Scoping literature review, (2) 'roundtable' discussion meetings, (3) redesign of trials, (4) interviews and (5) guidance document development, with input from public contributors and the ACCESS team. RESULTS Over 40 experts contributed to the ACCESS project-patients and the public, clinicians, NHS research staff, trialists and other academics. The scoping review identified several strategies being used to improve inclusion, mostly around recruitment settings, but there was little evaluation of these strategies. The 'roundtable' discussions identified additional strategies being used across the UK and Ireland to improve inclusion, which were grouped into: Communication, Community engagement, Recruitment sites, Patient information, Flexibility, Recruitment settings, Consent process, Monitoring, Training for researchers and Incentives. These strategies were used to redesign three existing trials by applying one of the three INCLUDE frameworks (ethnicity, socioeconomic disadvantage, impaired capacity to consent) to one trial each, to produce the key recommendations for the guidance. Issues around implementation were explored in stakeholder interviews and key facilitators were identified: funders requesting information on inclusion, having the time and funding to implement strategies, dedicated staff, flexibility in trial protocols, and considering inclusion of under-served groups at the design stages. The STEP UP guidance is freely available at http://step-up-clinical-trials.co.uk . CONCLUSION Researchers should consider inclusivity to shape initial trial design decisions. Trial teams and funders need to ensure that trials are given both the resources and time needed to implement the STEP UP guidance and increase the opportunities to recruit a diverse population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inconsistent reporting of patient characteristics in clinical research hampers reproducibility and limits analysis opportunities. This paper proposes condition-specific 'Core Descriptor Sets' comprising key factors like demographics, disease severity, comorbidities, and prognosis to standardize Table 1 reporting. METHODS Development entails stakeholder involvement, systematic identification of descriptors, value rating, and consensus-building using multiple Delphi rounds. Final agreement comes at an expert meeting. CONCLUSION Benefits include easier cross-study comparison, for example, through individual patient meta-analysis, facilitated by comparison of consistently reported individual data rather than group-level analysis. This may also support routine data analyses, subgroup and risk identification, and reduced research waste. Core Descriptor Sets describe cohorts thoroughly while minimizing research burden. They are intended to enable improved clinical characterization, personalization, reproducibility, data sharing, and knowledge building.

Abstract
Respirometry is an important tool for understanding whole-animal energy and water balance in relation to the environment. Consequently, the growing number of studies using respirometry over the last decade warrants reliable reporting and data sharing for effective dissemination and research synthesis. We provide a checklist guideline on five key sections to facilitate the transparency, reproducibility, and replicability of respirometry studies: 1) materials, set up, plumbing, 2) subject conditions/maintenance, 3) measurement conditions, 4) data processing, and 5) data reporting and statistics, each with explanations and example studies. Transparency in reporting and data availability has benefits on multiple fronts. Authors can use this checklist to design and report on their study, and reviewers and editors can use the checklist to assess the reporting quality of the manuscripts they review. Improved standards for reporting will enhance the value of primary studies and will greatly facilitate the ability to carry out higher quality research syntheses to address ecological and evolutionary theories.

Abstract
This article introduces the lesser known qualitative research design of phenomenography to medical science and health professions education researchers. Phenomenography, as distinct from phenomenology, seeks to describe and organise the different ways people experience and understand a phenomenon. Here, the origins and philosophical underpinnings of phenomenography are briefly shared, and an outline of how a phenomenographic research study may be undertaken is presented. This includes data collection tools, analytic method, and examples from the field. Overall, phenomenography is valuable for better understanding the varied experiences of students, educators, practitioners, and patients, with implications for pedagogy, practice, and related outcomes.

Abstract
After a long journey in relative obscurity, qualitative research is being accepted in the field of school psychology. As more school psychology researchers and graduate students adopt it as part of their scholarly endeavors, we reflect on the qualitative research published in school psychology since 2006 in terms of what has been done so far and what can be improved going forward. This act of academic retrospection can strengthen qualitative research in school psychology by helping to identify areas of strength and weakness. We read all qualitative studies published in seven school psychology journals between 2006 and 2021 to understand their methodological character. In Section I, we discuss the methodological trends (e.g., approach to inquiry, data collection methods, data analysis strategies) we found. In Section II, we reflect upon this corpus and identify some common misconceptions about qualitative methodologies that stood out to us. We clarify these misconceptions and highlight some examples of 'good' practices in these articles that could be adopted by other researchers. Finally in Section III, we provide some general recommendations about developing school psychologists' understanding of and the ability to conduct qualitative research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Some large, randomized trials investigating red cell transfusion strategies have significant numbers of transfusions administered outside the trial study period. We sought to investigate the potential impact of this methodological issue. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing liberal vs restrictive transfusion strategies in cardiac surgery and acute myocardial infarction patients. The outcome of interest was 30-day or in-hospital mortality. RESULTS In cardiac surgery, the pooled risk ratio for mortality was 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62-1.12, P = .22) times lower in the restrictive group when compared to the liberal group in trials applying a transfusion strategy throughout the patient's entire perioperative period, and 1.33 (95% CI 0.84-2.11, P = .22) times higher in the restrictive group in trials not applying transfusion strategies throughout the entire perioperative period. When combined, the risk ratio for mortality was 0.98 (95% CI 0.73-1.32, P = .89). In patients with acute myocardial infarction, the risk ratio for mortality was 0.72 (95% CI 0.40-1.28, P = .26) times lower in the restrictive group when compared to the liberal group in 1 trial excluding patients administered the intervention prerandomization and 1.19 (95% CI 0.96-1.47, P = .11) times higher in the restrictive group in 1 trial including patients receiving the intervention prerandomization. When combined the risk ratio for mortality was 1.00 (0.62-1.59, P = .99). CONCLUSION Though not statistically significant, there was a consistent difference in trends between RCTs administering significant numbers of transfusion outside the trial study period compared to those that did not. The implications of our results may extend to RCTs in other settings that ignore if and how frequently an investigated therapy is administered outside the trial window.

Abstract
The growing complexity of biopharmaceutical sponsored trials has adverse impacts on increased burdens on participants, clinical sites, and sponsors, including greater difficulty recruiting and retaining participants, difficulty engaging sites to participate in trials, excessive cost of trials, and increased cycle times. The schedule of assessments (SoAs) is the origin of and blueprint for complexity that is often generated by copying and pasting from previous SoAs. We developed an approach, termed Lean Design, for redesigning the assessments in SoAs that generate data, the 'Data SoA.' It starts with a simple "ground zero" SoA. Any addition is challenged using several principles of trial design. We employed a system, the Faro Trial Designer Tool, to quantify the impacts of changes in an SoA to provide real-time feedback to the team and sponsor. We applied the approach in workshops with teams for six clinical trials in various stages of design and implementation. The approach resulted in recommendation for substantial potential savings in participant and site staff time, costs, and complexity of the trials. Application of this approach to very early stages of protocol design has the potential to reduce the complexity of biopharmaceutical sponsored trials and its consequences.

Abstract
Consumer and community involvement (also referred to as patient and public involvement) in health-related curricula involves actively partnering with people with lived experience of health and social care systems. While health professions education has a long history of interaction with patients or consumers, a shift in the way consumer and community engage in health-related education has created novel opportunities for mutual relationships valuing lived experience expertise and shifting traditional education power relations. Drawing on a mixed methods design, we explored consumer and community involvement practices in the design and delivery of health-related education using the capability, opportunity, motivation and behaviour framework (COM-B). In our results, we describe educator capabilities, opportunities and motivations, including identifying barriers and enablers to consumer and community involvement in health-related education. Educators have varying philosophical reasons and approaches for involving consumers and community. There is a focus on augmenting student learning through inclusion of lived and living experience, and on mutual transformative learning through embedding lived experience and co-creating learning. How these philosophical positionings and motivations shape the degree by which educators involve consumers and community members in health-related curricula is important for further understanding these educational partnerships within universities.

Abstract
Noninferiority clinical trials are crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of new interventions compared to standard interventions. By establishing statistical and clinical comparability, these trials can be conducted to demonstrate that a new intervention is not significantly inferior to the standard intervention. However, selecting appropriate noninferiority margins and study designs are essential to ensuring valid and reliable results. Moreover, employing the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement for reporting noninferiority clinical trials enhances the quality and transparency of research findings. This article addresses key considerations and challenges faced by investigators in planning, conducting, and interpreting the results of noninferiority clinical trials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence based practice relies on availability of research evidence mostly through peer-reviewed journal publications. No consensus currently exists on the best hierarchy of research evidence, often categorised by the adopted research designs. Analysing the prevalent research designs in radiography professional journals is one vital step in considering an evidence hierarchy specific to the radiography profession and this forms the aim of this study. METHODS Bibliometric data of publications in three Radiography professional journals within a 10-year period were extracted. The Digital Object Identifier were used to locate papers on publishers' websites and obtain relevant data for analysis. Descriptive analysis using frequencies and percentages were used to represent data while Chi-square was used to analyse relationship between categorical variables. RESULTS 1830 articles met the pre-set inclusion criteria. Quantitative descriptive studies were the most published design (26.6%) followed by non-RCT experimental studies (18.7%), while Randomised Controlled Trials (RCT) were the least published (1.0%). Systematic reviews (42.9%) showed the highest average percentage increase within the 10-year period, however RCTs showed no net increase. Single-centre studies predominated among experimental studies (RCT = 88.9%; Non-RCT = 95%). Author collaboration across all study designs was notable, with RCTs showing the most (100%). Quantitative and qualitative studies comparatively had similar number of citations when publication numbers were matched. Quantitative descriptive studies had the highest cumulative citations while RCTs had the least. CONCLUSION There is a case to advocate for more study designs towards the peak of evidence hierarchies such as systematic reviews and RCT. Radiography research should be primarily designed to answer pertinent questions and improve the validity of the profession's evidence base. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE The evidence presented can encourage the adoption of the research designs that enhances radiography profession's evidence base.

Abstract
Criteria for assessment of the significance of scientific articles are presented. The focus is on research design and methodology, illustrated by the classical study on prehospital volume treatment of severely injured individuals with penetrating torso injuries by Bickell et al. (1994). A well-thought out research design is crucial for the success of a scientific study and is documented in a study protocol beforehand. A hypothesis is a provisional explanation or prediction and must be testable, falsifiable, precise, and relevant. There are various types of randomization methods, with the randomized controlled trial being the gold standard for clinical interventional studies. When reading a scientific article it is important to verify whether the research design and setting align with the research question and whether potential sources of error have been considered and controlled. Critical scrutiny should also be applied to references, the funding and expertise of the researchers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inadequate reporting of fidelity to interventions in trials limits the transparency and interpretation of trial findings. Despite this, most trials of non-drug, non-surgical interventions lack comprehensive reporting of fidelity. If fidelity is poorly reported, it is unclear which intervention components were tested or implemented within the trial, which also hinders research reproducibility. This protocol describes the development process of a reporting guideline for fidelity of non-drug, non-surgical interventions (ReFiND) in the context of trials. METHODS The ReFiND guideline will be developed in six stages. Stage one: a guideline development group has been formed to oversee the guideline methodology. Stage two: a scoping review will be conducted to identify and summarize existing guidance documents on the fidelity of non-drug, non-surgical interventions. Stage three: a Delphi study will be conducted to reach consensus on reporting items. Stage four: a consensus meeting will be held to consolidate the reporting items and discuss the wording and structure of the guideline. Stage five: a guidance statement, an elaboration and explanation document, and a reporting checklist will be developed. Stage six: different strategies will be used to disseminate and implement the ReFiND guideline. DISCUSSION The ReFiND guideline will provide a set of items developed through international consensus to improve the reporting of intervention fidelity in trials of non-drug, non-surgical interventions. This reporting guideline will enhance transparency and reproducibility in future non-drug, non-surgical intervention research.

Abstract
The National Institute of Health (NIH) policy, Consideration of Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV) in NIH-funded Research (2015), focuses on the expectation that researchers account for the influence of SABV in vertebrate animal and human studies and provide a strong justification for single-sex investigations. When SABV is considered in the research design, data analyses, and reporting, the rigor and reproducibility of the research are elevated and inform best practices and precision health for all people. Additional recommendations include the appropriate use of terminology, integration into curricula, intersection with social determinants of health, and application of sex and gender equity guidelines when disseminating research. This paper is a "call to action" for nurse researchers to lean into and apply this policy's principles and our recommendations, from the bench to the bedside, to advance the equity and health of all people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study has been conducted prospectively for 18 years. However, it faces limitations in representing the entire population of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Korea. To address these limitations and validate the study design, we analyzed characteristics across several HIV datasets. METHODS We compared epidemiological and clinical characteristics from 3 datasets: the Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (dataset 1, n=1,562), retrospective cohort data (dataset 2, n=2,665), and the national HIV reporting system of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) (dataset 3, n=17,403). RESULTS The demographic characteristics of age, sex, and age at HIV diagnosis did not differ significantly across datasets. However, dataset 3 contained a higher proportion of patients diagnosed after 2008 (69.5%) than the other datasets. Regarding transmission routes, same-sex contact accounted for a greater proportion of dataset 1 (59.8%) compared to datasets 2 (20.9%) and 3 (32.6%). The proportion of patients with CD4 T-cell counts below 200/mm3 at HIV diagnosis was higher in datasets 1 (39.4%) and 2 (33.3%) compared to dataset 3 (16.3%). Initial HIV viral load measurements were not obtained for dataset 3. CONCLUSIONS The Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study demonstrated representativeness regarding the demographic characteristics of Korean patients. Of the sources, dataset 1 contained the most data on transmission routes. While the KDCA data encompassed all HIV patients, it lacked detailed clinical information. To improve the representativeness of the Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study, we propose expanding and revising the cohort design and enrolling more patients who have been recently diagnosed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Treatment guidelines for gender-affirming hormone therapy with estrogen (GAHT-E) recommend specific dosing regimens based on limited data. Well-controlled efficacy trials are essential to tailoring treatment to patient goals as the guidelines recommend. The goal of this study was to take a foundational step toward designing community-centered effectiveness trials for gender-diverse individuals seeking GAHT-E. METHODS Our team developed a cross-sectional survey based on broad clinical experience and consultation with our community advisory board. The survey included 60 items covering demographics, transition history, goals and priorities for treatment, indicators of treatment success, sexual function goals, and future research priorities. The survey was distributed during the summer of 2021, primarily through social networks designed for gender-expansive individuals seeking treatment with estrogen. RESULTS A total of 1270 individuals completed the survey. Overall treatment goals most frequently rated "extremely important" or "very important" were the following: (1) improved satisfaction with life (81%), (2) appearing more feminine (80%), (3) appearing less masculine (77%), (4) improved mental health (76%), and (5) being seen as your true gender by others (75%). The three body characteristics most frequently rated "highest priority" or "high priority" among changes were the following: (1) facial hair (85%), (2) breast shape or size (84%), and (3) body shape (80%). The highest-rated research priority was comparing feminization with different routes of estrogen administration. CONCLUSION The goals and experiences of individuals seeking GAHT-E are diverse. Future clinical trials of GAHT-E should be grounded in the needs and priorities of community stakeholders.

Abstract
Objectives To assess whether age, sex, comorbidity count, and race and ethnic group are associated with the likelihood of trial participants not being enrolled in a trial for any reason (ie, screen failure). Design Bayesian meta-analysis of individual participant level data. Setting Industry funded phase 3/4 trials of chronic medical conditions. Participants Participants were identified using individual participant level data to be in either the enrolled group or screen failure group. Data were available for 52 trials involving 72 178 screened individuals of whom 24 733 (34%) were excluded from the trial at the screening stage. Main outcome measures For each trial, logistic regression models were constructed to assess likelihood of screen failure in people who had been invited to screening, and were regressed on age (per 10 year increment), sex (male v female), comorbidity count (per one additional comorbidity), and race or ethnic group. Trial level analyses were combined in Bayesian hierarchical models with pooling across condition. Results In age and sex adjusted models across all trials, neither age nor sex was associated with increased odds of screen failure, although weak associations were detected after additionally adjusting for comorbidity (odds ratio of age, per 10 year increment was 1.02 (95% credibility interval 1.01 to 1.04) and male sex (0.95 (0.91 to 1.00)). Comorbidity count was weakly associated with screen failure, but in an unexpected direction (0.97 per additional comorbidity (0.94 to 1.00), adjusted for age and sex). People who self-reported as black seemed to be slightly more likely to fail screening than people reporting as white (1.04 (0.99 to 1.09)); a weak effect that seemed to persist after adjustment for age, sex, and comorbidity count (1.05 (0.98 to 1.12)). The between-trial heterogeneity was generally low, evidence of heterogeneity by sex was noted across conditions (variation in odds ratios on log scale of 0.01-0.13). Conclusions Although the conclusions are limited by uncertainty about the completeness or accuracy of data collection among participants who were not randomised, we identified mostly weak associations with an increased likelihood of screen failure for age, sex, comorbidity count, and black race or ethnic group. Proportionate increases in screening these underserved populations may improve representation in trials. Trial registration number PROSPERO CRD42018048202.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In a national cohort of Veterans, weight change was compared between participants in a US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) behavioral weight management program (MOVE!) and matched non-participants, and between high-intensity and low-intensity participants. METHODS Retrospective cohort study of Veterans with 1 + MOVE! visits in 2008-2017 were matched to MOVE! non-participants via sequential stratification. Percent weight change up to two years after MOVE! initiation of participants and non-participants was modeled using generalized additive mixed models, and 1-year weight change of high-intensity or low-intensity participants was also compared. RESULTS MOVE! participants (n = 499,696) and non-participant controls (n = 1,336,172) were well-matched, with an average age of 56 years and average BMI of 35. MOVE! participants lost 1.4 % at 12 months and 1.2 % at 24 months, which was 0.89 % points (95 % CI: 0.83-0.96) more at 12 months than non-participants and 0.55 % points (95 % CI: 0.41-0.68) more at 24 months. 9.1 % of MOVE! participants had high-intensity use in one year, and they had 2.38 % point (95 % CI: 2.25-2.52) greater weight loss than low-intensity participation at 12 months (2.8 % vs 0.4 %). CONCLUSIONS Participation in VA's system-wide behavioral weight management program (MOVE!) was associated with modest weight loss, suggesting that program modifications are needed to increase Veteran engagement and program effectiveness. Future research should further explore how variations in program delivery and the use of newer anti-obesity medications may impact the program's effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is a global health concern. Additionally, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is disproportionately high among adolescents and adults in rural Appalachia. The primary study objective is to determine the intervention effects of Kids SIPsmartER on students' SSB consumption. Secondary objectives focus on caregivers' SSB consumption and secondary student and caregiver outcomes [e.g, body mass index (BMI), quality of life (QOL)]. METHODS This Type 1 hybrid, cluster randomized controlled trial includes 12 Appalachian middle schools (6 randomized to Kids SIPsmartER and 6 to control). Kids SIPsmartER is a 6-month, 12 lesson, multi-level, school-based, behavior and health literacy program aimed at reducing SSB among 7th grade middle school students. The program also incorporates a two-way text message strategy for caregivers. In this primary prevention intervention, all 7th grade students and their caregivers from participating schools were eligible to participate, regardless of baseline SSB consumption. Validated instruments were used to assess SSB behaviors and QOL. Height and weight were objectively measured in students and self-reported by caregivers. Analyses included modified two-part models with time fixed effects that controlled for relevant demographics and included school cluster robust standard errors. RESULTS Of the 526 students and 220 caregivers, mean (SD) ages were 12.7 (0.5) and 40.6 (6.7) years, respectively. Students were 55% female. Caregivers were mostly female (95%) and White (93%); 25% had a high school education or less and 33% had an annual household income less than $50,000. Regardless of SSB intake at baseline and relative to control participants, SSB significantly decreased among students [-7.2 ounces/day (95% CI = -10.7, -3.7); p < 0.001, effect size (ES) = 0.35] and caregivers [-6.3 ounces/day (95% CI = -11.3, -1.3); p = 0.014, ES = 0.33]. Among students (42%) and caregivers (28%) who consumed > 24 SSB ounces/day at baseline (i.e., high consumers), the ES increased to 0.45 and 0.95, respectively. There were no significant effects for student or caregiver QOL indicators or objectively measured student BMI; however, caregiver self-reported BMI significantly decreased in the intervention versus control schools (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Kids SIPsmartER was effective at reducing SSB consumption among students and their caregivers in the rural, medically underserved Appalachian region. Importantly, SSB effects were even stronger among students and caregivers who were high consumers at baseline. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clincialtrials.gov: NCT03740113. Abstract
The number of scientific publications is growing at an unprecedented rate. Failure to properly evaluate existing literature at the start of a project may result in a researcher wasting time and resources. As pharmacy researchers and scholars look to conceptualize new studies, it is imperative to begin with a high-quality literature review that reveals what is known and unknown about a given topic. The purpose of this commentary is to provide useful guidance on conducting rigorous searches of the literature that inform the design and execution of research. Guidance for less formal literature reviews can be adapted from best practices utilized within the formalized field of evidence synthesis. Additionally, researchers can draw on guidance from PRESS (Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies) to engage in self-evaluation of their search strategies. Finally, developing an awareness of common pitfalls when designing literature searches can provide researchers with confidence that their research is designed to fill clearly articulated gaps in knowledge.

Abstract
Emerging adulthood, the period between ages 18 and 25, is distinct from older and younger populations in terms of both physiology and social circumstances. As a critical developmental window with long-lasting repercussions, emerging adulthood presents a key opportunity for prevention of cardiovascular disease. Despite significant advances in diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention for other age groups, 18-25 year-olds remain underrepresented in research. Using diabetes prevention as an example, we analyzed the cited evidence behind four major guidelines that influence US clinical practice on screening and management of prediabetes in children and adults, revealing that the majority of these studies in both the pediatric and adult literature do not include emerging adults in their study populations. This gap between the pediatric and adult diabetes prevention literature creates a missing link connecting childhood risks to adult chronic disease. In this article, we draw attention to this often overlooked age group, and provide tangible recommendations as a path forward for both pediatric and adult researchers to increase the representation of emerging adults in diabetes prevention and other cardiovascular disease prevention studies.
